Can’t stop thinking about how all of S2, Aziraphale is throwing himself at Crowley physically (the hand on his chest in the bar, the dance, the hand on his shoulder when Gabe and Beez say being together is more important than sides) waiting for Crowley to make the next move, while Crowley is throwing himself at Aziraphale emotionally (trying to make the humans fall in love by engineering a rainstorm, letting Aziraphale drive his car, recommending Alpha Centauri as a place for Gabe and Beez to go). And how in the final 15, they finally get closer to giving the other what they have been asking for all season, but it’s twisted and miscommunicated: “come with me” Aziraphale says and all Crowley hears is “to heaven”; “I need you” Aziraphale says, and all Crowley hears is “to change for me”; Crowley grabs Aziraphale and kisses him the way Aziraphale has wanted all season and Aziraphale, thinking it’s a temptation away from Heaven, forgives him instead of kissing him back.

Do you wonder if Aziraphale stared up to the stars his first night in Eden, straining to see into the distance, and thought to himself that Crowley was right, you really couldn’t see the best stars from Earth?

I knew that Crowley knew exactly where everything in the bookshop went when he was tidying it back up for Azzy to the exact millimetre of where his chair sat at his desk.

The thing is Aziraphale is convinced Crowley falling was a mistake in the system. Crowley is good and he's kind and Heaven is supposed to be the good side so it shouldn't have cast him out, that's why he wants to reinstate him as an angel, because what else would he be?

Whereas Crowley understands perfectly that him falling was the system working as intended, Heaven doesn't care about angels being good and kind, it cares about them being obedient and loyal.

And as long as Aziraphale doesn't see that he won't be free from them, because it's inconceivable to him that someone good wouldn't want to be on the good side.

It’s also “I won’t leave you alone here, I’ll come back angel” / “he likes rescuing me” when the demons are storming the bookshop.

They both love the other by trying to keep them safe, but they don’t ever talk about what that means. They don’t talk about what they are each trying to rescue the other *from.*

Instead of angry and depressed napping Crowley, hear me out: genuinely worried and understanding Crowley who is livid with the situation but as in love as he’s been for six thousand years stress cleaning the bookshop

No but really, love stories about middle-aged queer people (or immortal equivalents ;-) ) in which they hit the halfway through or 2/3-of-the-way-through agonising cliffhanger break-up beat, being as it is a really time-honoured part of happy-ending classic romances. And in mainstream tv shows! Mainstream tv shows aimed at a wide audience!

That’s actually bloody awesome. I mean, at the time of course it hurts like hell. But... really. For queer love to be treated as suitable for a love story? To be hitting the Emma-and-Knightley-at-Box-Hill, Darcy’s-bad-proposal, Ladislaw-leaving-Middlemarch-because-clearly-he-and-Dorothea-can’t-be-together etc. etc. bit... I grew up on sitcoms like From May to December when fall outs like this were part of the story. It’s classic, it’s standard. It’s tropey in the best way: and one of those tropes which is a hundred times more fresh and powerful for a non-cishet couple.

I mean, I don’t know. I’m 44 and British. I grew up bi and nonbinary and closeted with Section 28 (even if the teachers at my school broke the Section 28 laws All The Time, bless them <3 ). I could not have imagined stories like this with a big audience. And as a community globally we are so hard beset, things are truly terrifying, but... but this is so powerful. Aziraphale/Crowley (and Nina/Maggie; actually and also Gabriel/Beelzebub given that too is a queer relationship!). And other stories too that I haven’t seen but know are out there. :-)

So no, I don’t love Neil Gaiman or John Finnemore any less for the end of series 2. Quite the contrary. Hitting “conventional” romance tropes with queer couples in a show like this? Yes, including the romance tropes that hurt dreadfully? Oh hell yes. Thank you, Neil and John. Thank you Pterry. Thank you Michael and David and Nina and Maggie. <3

And... well, since we did ask them for a story about an angel and a demon in love... It was never going to be easy. :) <3
