iced coffee, dark circles, cigarette breaks, messy hair, chewed pen caps, lots and lots of highlighters, curiosity, unorganized thoughts, equations written all over the white board, dreams about discovering new things, pulling an all-nighter, staying in library till late

The moon is a lesbian. I don’t make the rules. But if I did make the rules, I’d still make the moon a lesbian.

The Spring 23 semester has officially come to a close, and now that I have no homework I'm literally sitting at my desk like
Tumblr media
T minus 19 days until the start of my heliophysics REU at UAH, I need to get myself some clothes asap lol
I recently received the title of my project and learned that I'll be working on simulating active regions of the sun which I think is SUPER cool. I can't wait to get started!! I'm thinking I'll definitely be more active on the daily while I'm in Alabama for that. I want to keep a decent blog of that both for sharing and for myself to keep record of this incredible experience.
I think that's all for now, stay safe ❤️
images above: pen on my arm reading "fuck it, we bawl" with a teardrop smiley underneath, and a basic leaf latte art I somehow managed at work recently.

i just realized that i spent my first year of university as a stem student, my second year as an art student, and my third year will be as a humanities student-
y'all i'm genuinely concerned about how difficult it is for me to find something i enjoy long term.
like my brother changed majors every year too but at least he stayed in stem (and the same school) each time.
i'm changing majors and fields and schools rip
like i'm so concerned if i'll ever graduate and find a career that i like

love my professors talking about career aspirations and majors like they're the same thing. like,, yes, I'm going to college and in that, the final goal is to be fully capable of (for me) astrophysics research, which you need degrees for, but I also have so many more aspirations on any given day, this is just the one that completely requires a college degree.
I also want to be a writer, and a chef, and a variety streamer, and have enough money to have a chain of "stores" without an active business license so I just give stuff out for free with no limits or questions just the essentials of life on hand for anyone who wants them, and I want to keep a community garden, and I want to keep cows and sheep and chickens and goats all for non-meat products, and etc. etc.! I have so many career aspirations, space is just the one thing I needed a degree for

I've decided to provide the tumblr sphere with more Physics Major (TM) content for no reason other than I don't want to do my mathematical physics assignment so here are my thoughts as a Third Year (TM) in this program:
1) everything is linear algebra
2) no really, everything is linear algebra
3) amusement parks are a great source for problems in lagrangian mechanics
4) lasers are cool
5) everything is also a taylor series
6) A rectangular block falling over is surprisingly complicated
7) everything is a differential equation
8) differential equations are linear algebra
9) there is not a single physics person that is okay
10) astronomy killed math and is currently dancing on its corpse
11) astronomy is linear algebra

Hyakutake, Big Dipper, and Observatory Dome - April 1st, 1996.
"In one of the more spectacular pictures taken, Comet Hyakutake is shown here on March 26th, 1996 high in the dark Missouri sky. In the foreground is Elmcrest Observatory, complete with a dim red light glowing inside the dome. The stars in the background moved slightly during the exposure, causing them to appear as streaks instead of points of light. Nevertheless, the constellation of Ursa Major - including the Big Dipper - is visible. Photographs with both recognisable foreground and background objects visible can be quite striking, as they add angular perspective and contrast to the outworldly and unfamiliar comet."

This was way back in the year 1977 when the book 'The first three minutes' by Steven Weinberg was published. Since then we have covered quite some distance in our journey to understand the universe.
Right now there are quite a few methods using which we can determine the value of the Hubble's constant. While most of them give very differing values, some do give similar and quite accurate results. According to the method which uses the galaxies' velocity to determine the value of the constant, it comes to around 73 ± 1 kilometers per second per megaparsec (km/s/Mpc). The other method involves the use of the CMB. The value using this method is around 67.5 ± 0.5 km/s/Mpc.
These two remain at the top of the list when it comes to the possible value of the Hubble's constant. But there have been some other attempts which are worth looking at as well.

The Hubble tension (Hubble Trouble sounds more fun) isn't going to go away anytime soon it seems. Or it might just get solved the very next day. We never really know when it comes to matters of space. 🚀

I think it would be fun to make Uncle Throckmorton very knowledgeable about physics just as a nod to where Throckmorton the skateboarder came from. He doesn't use it for anything. He has a normal ass job. But he can be just like me!

Trying to do worldbuilding for a planet is very hard when you don't know anything about astronomy, physics, hard science in general, and haven't taken a math class in several years
I wanted the planet to be small but otherwise Earth-like but apparently a planet that small would not be dense enough to hold an atmosphere together unless it was real close to its sun and if I wanted it to be real close to its sun while still being habitable it'd have to be a red dwarf star and actually a planet that orbited a red dwarf star that close would probably be tidally locked and the colors would be all weird and wait, how old is the planet, what about the moon, fuck we gotta figure out the tectonic plates, how the fuck do THOSE work--
.
.
..if this were a spec bio or sci-fi setting these would be interesting topics im sure. But I'm trying to put together a HIGH FANTASY SETTING. These guys wouldn't even appreciate the work I'm doing here!! In their setting the sun is a deity who handles LEGAL MATTERS they don't CARE ABOUT THISSSS

Long time no see!!! I've been completely and utterly disgraceful about keeping on top of my work these last few weeks, so naturally I haven't been on Tumblr much either. Spring break was great, but it threw me way off with deadlines and time management..
Last week I ended up having about a week and a half worth of calculus to turn in, and I had a full week of computer science as well. To make it even better, I worked opening shifts (I work at Starbucks so this means clocking in at 5:30 am 🥴). So I was up around 5 and went to bed after midnight all of last weekend. Yesterday I had a similar situation with calc, and today I had a much of CS as well, but I was more rested so I was able to knock it out pretty effectively!
I'm rewarding myself for my hard work with some raspberry white chocolate cheesecake from Cheesecake Factory and a nice warm London Fog. I don't have any aesthetic pics of the cake, so here's my little foggy absolutely lost in the sauce lol
Tumblr media
Also, yesterday night was Super clear, so I was able to snap a few shots of the stars on my phone!

The first picture shows Orion and Canis Major, the second shows Canis more centered, and the third shows Ursa Major. I've nicknamed canis "stick dog" because that's exactly what it looks like to me!! I call Ursa "Big Bear" which is what it directly translates to anyways, but I say it like 🅱️ig 🅱️ear hahaha
That's all from me for now, it's past midnight already so I'm signing off for the night!
(Been obsessed with this since it came )

no. no absolutely not. "this name that has stumped every scholar ever is actually the name of an island in Scandinavia and somehow nobody caught that" cut the shit. you're devising a way to lower the speed of light to one-tenth of its capacity and yet a Norwegian word stumped all your collective asses i am going to rip out someone's throat.
