Why do you think Levi only ever said Dedicate your heart to Hange?
What a surprise! Hello there anon!
Oh, I actually like this question very much >:D I’m sure there are many explanations out there by all the amazing people in the fandom regarding this topic. However, since you asked for my opinion, then I will gladly give my two cents regarding this topic.
Let's see if I can put my psychology degree to good use.
Disclaimer: since I'm a levihan slut, I'm sure you know what to expect from this. Also, English is not my first language, so please forgive me if you found any mistakes :D
First of all, we know that Levi had never said “Dedicate your heart” before (as suggested by Hange).
Tumblr media
If that’s the case, then why did he never say that before? Well, I think it’s because he wasn’t your typical by-the-book soldier. Unlike most people in the corps, Levi joined under a special circumstance. We know that he didn’t voluntarily enlist himself as a trainee so he could join the Survey Corps and heroically save humanity from all the titans. Instead, he joined the corps because Erwin personally scouted him. Because of that, he didn't have any particular or specific reason to join it in the first place (unlike let’s say Eren or even Hange), he even planned on quitting the corps at one point. His reason for staying in the corps—other than his belief in Erwin—was just as simple as: “I like the fresh air of the outside world.”
Tumblr media
EDIT: Okay, I just want to make myself clear. I'm not saying that his motivation in joining the corps was so shallow or even implying that he does not care a bit for humanity. He cares obviously, if he didn't then we would not have Captain Levi in our SNK story. What I meant by my statement above was to highlight how simple he was as a soldier. Like, he didn't need a grand motivation to join in the first place, because he just knew that staying in the corps was the good thing to do. He risked his life everyday in battles just for a simple wish of breathing the fresh air. He wanted the people in the wall to be free from the stinky air, because for him freedom is in the mundane things in life. To quote my other post: "His simplicity is what makes him kind."
Also, I made a follow-up post regarding my interpretation of Levi's character here. You don't have to read it, but if you want to know how I see Levi as a character, I hope that post can help.
But anyway, since he was scouted under a special condition (as well as having enormous strength as a soldier), I think he somehow had a privilege in the corps to fuck around and be as “disrespectful” as he wanted to be. Not to mention Erwin became a commander around a year after Levi joined, so my man was probably living his best nepotism/VIP life. Therefore, I would think that Levi wasn’t as strict with the rules as other soldiers. He wasn’t the kind of soldier who kept preaching about "dedicate your life" to others. He just came to work, did his job, and went home (just like me fr). I’m not saying he doesn’t care about humanity (he cares obviously) it’s just he doesn’t express it in a traditional soldier way.
No wonder we all were so surprised when he did say THAT WORDS to Hange. It wasn't like him at all. Even Hange was caught off guard by him saying it, right?
Tumblr media
But then, this raises another question, why is it when he finally said it, he only said it to Hange? Why, for instance, he didn’t say it to Erwin? I mean, both Erwin and Hange went on a suicide mission. Moreover, out of all the people that we know in the story, we can see that Levi shares many significant moments in the narrative with these two. If that’s the case, then why did he say different things to each of them?
For me, the answer is quite simple, it’s because Levi is an empathetic person. Both “Give up on your dreams and die for us” and “Dedicate your heart” that he said to Erwin and Hange respectively were something that he believed they needed to hear at THAT moment. It was his last words for them right before they died, his last comfort.
He told Erwin to give up on his dreams and die because at that moment, when their troops were cornered by the beast titan, Erwin showed his vulnerable side to Levi. Erwin admitted that he actually had a plan (albeit a suicidal one for him and the rest of the soldiers) to defeat the beast titan but he withheld it at first because: 1) he didn’t want to die because he wanted to see the basement; and 2) he didn’t want to send any more soldiers into their death because he was being haunted by the ghost of the past soldiers who had dedicated their heart to his plan.
Therefore, Levi, out of his compassion for Erwin, took the burden of making that painful choice from Erwin’s hand. He even made a promise to kill the beast titan, as if to say that all of their death wouldn’t be in vain. He said it to make Erwin feel better, which is why Erwin smiled after Levi said that.
Tumblr media
I think the same explanation can be said for Hange's situation. However, to understand why he only said “Dedicate your heart” to Hange, I think we need to talk about the nature of their relationship first. First of all, they were close friends, that is obvious. They had known each other for quite a long time and they had gone on many missions together (and survived), so their bond was strong. To quote Moblit from that one Smartpass AU he shares with Levi: “[Levi and Hange have] a special kind of bond from spending many years together. It’s something that Moblit didn't have with [Hange].”
Speaking of Levi, one of the things that I feel people tend to overlook from Levi is his caring nature. He cares for his squads, for humanity as a whole, and especially for his trusted comrades (e.g. Erwin and Hange). However, since he isn’t exactly a very eloquent person, he has a weird way of showing his affection, like when he told Erwin that he would break his legs so he didn't have to join the dangerous operation to retake Shiganshina. Fortunately, since Erwin knew Levi’s character, he understood the meaning behind his words. Although for most people, it was probably hard to tell.
Other than Erwin, the other person who could see Levi’s kindness was of course Hange—who also received a lot of care from Levi. It might be because of the nature of her job (getting too close to titans for her experiments + her role as a commander later) and because of her tendency to be a little bit reckless as well as forgetful of taking care of herself when excited (which was why she had Moblit by her side) that made Levi feel the need to pay a lot of attention to her.
And by a lot, I mean A LOT.
This is just my opinion, but in the canon, I noticed that Levi is actually the one who expresses or initiates a lot of actions toward Hange (believe me, my man is working overtime):
Asking about her new “hobby” in rocks (after Annie’s capture).
Noticing her distress after Pastor Nick’s death and trying to lift her spirit up.
Calming her down when she was upset at Keith Shadis when he finally told the truth about Grisha's past & his reason for leaving his commander position in Survey Corps.
Thinking about Hange’s safety during missions (after Bertholdt’s transformation in Shiganshina and when she was attacked by one of Kenny’s men in the Reiss Chapel).
Telling her to not touch some random things at the beach.
Telling Moblit to take care of Hange because he can't be always by her side (Smartpass AU)
Knocking Hange out to forcibly bathe her (Smartpass AU). Also, the way he worded it in a way that "yeah I don't like her filthiness when I'm off-duty, so I took it upon myself to clean her." I see you...
Levi saving Hange from being hit on the head by a bunch of books + telling her to change her wet clothes (Smartpass AU)
Well you get what I mean. Anyway—at least for me—he doesn’t seem to do this solely because of Hange’s lack of self-care. I think he shows a lot of care for Hange because she’s important to him, which is of course exacerbated when they became the last two veterans to survive after the operation to take back Shiganshina. After so much lost, he clearly saw her as the last person he’s close to. I mean, in one of the Smartpass AU, she was the first person that came to his mind when he was asked about his family.
Not only that, I think he generally likes Hange as a person because she saw him for who he truly was. Like, remember their first meeting, Hange was the only one who was willing to approach Levi (while everyone was sceptical of him) and she did it purely out of admiration. She genuinely was impressed by him and wanted to get to know him better. A gesture that might be alien to Levi, which explains why he was unsure at first about Hange, but it seemed after many missions together, Hange was eventually able to earn his trust. Hange became a person who could freely tease him (him being a clean freak + their poop jokes) as well as became a walking dictionary for him (the way she translates Levi's words to Eren).
Tumblr media
On the other hand, contrary to Levi, I noticed that Hange tend to be more neutral with Levi. I’m not saying that Hange did not care for him. I mean, when she found his injured body, she became so protective of him that she willingly risked her life by jumping into the lake so she could save him.
Tumblr media
There was also this one scene of her trying to comfort him when he learned that titans was actually a human. Moreover, she also considered him to be her closest friend in the Survey Corps.
I believe she rarely showed her caring side to him because she knew that he is a capable fellow, and so she didn’t think he needed her help in particular. I don't think she had ever think that this man, the strongest man in the world, would ever sustain a horrible injury or even die. Sadly, she thought wrong. When she found his injured and dying body (chapter 115), Hange had to face a horrible realisation that she could actually lose him.
Tumblr media
Then, in chapter 126, we finally saw Hange taking care of Levi. She killed two soldiers to protect them. She also tended and healed his injury with so much care. In my opinion, being confronted by the mortality of the only person that she had left in the world, Hange most likely learned—the hard way—about how important Levi had actually become to her. Thus she was willing to do anything for him.
When this realisation mixed with her exhaustion from the war, she finally reached her breaking point. With no one but an unconscious Levi by her side, the passionate-happy-go-lucky researcher and the ever-so-composed commander of the Survey Corps found herself gradually letting down her guard to show her weakness, her feelings. In her vulnerability, she weakly expressed how she would rather live with him in the woods, away from the chaos outside. Like, can you believe this Hange, who always fought for humanity’s sake said, “Humanity be damned, I would rather spend the time I have left with you.”
I think this explains why her confession in chapter 126 caught us (the fandom) off guard, because not only it was out of character for her, but also for the first time, she showed her feelings to Levi.
Tumblr media
Later we know that Levi heard about her “confession” but since he also knew that Hange would never ever run away, he instead encouraged her to do the things that she believed in, and that was to stop Eren from committing genocide. However, I think her words had never left him, even after they left the woods. Because as you can see in chapter 132, he somehow made a seemingly random remark to her about how her feelings are not always unrequited. As if he knew which feelings of her that is requited.
Tumblr media
Consequently, we finally came to the big question. We see in chapter 132 that before Hange embarked on her suicide mission, Levi did something that was so out of character for him. He touched her heart and said, “Dedicate your heart”.
Why did he do this?
Tumblr media
To repeat my answer above, it’s most likely because he knew that it was exactly the things that she needed to hear the most. So he said it out of empathy. But isn’t it too short or even too formal for a goodbye between two close friends? Well, we have to take into consideration that Hange could read Levi like a book (remember their iconic telepathy?). She could easily translate his roundabout words and expressions, thus he didn’t need to write an essay for her. Which is why “dedicate your heart” was more than enough for both of them.
Moreover, I also infer that the reason why he never said “Dedicate your heart” while he was a soldier before was because he probably thought that he didn't necessarily have to give his heart to the corps and humanity. Again, he didn't have a grand reason to fight in the first place, and so he just wanted to do what he thought was good: to lend all his strength to help humanity. Therefore, by saying it for the first time in front of her, he seemingly wanted to show her how important and special she was to him. As if he was saying that he wants to dedicate himself only to her.
Hence, his gesture and words to Hange combined with all the preceding events (especially events in chapters 126 and 132), I could say that behind those three words, he was actually telling her: “Hey, the things you said in the woods, it was not unrequited. I actually feel the same way as you. I want to live with you as well, which is why I don't want you to go. However, I know I can't stop you because you’ve dedicated your heart to the freedom of humanity. So, I’ll let you go, but before you go I want you to know that you’re the only person I’m dedicating my heart to. My heart is yours.”
I'm not Hange so I don't think my translation is accurate HAHA but that's how I see it.
In conclusion, Levi had only ever said Dedicate your heart to Hange because: 1) he knew it would make her feel better/happy and special; and 2) it was also his answer to her soliloquy in the woods (it was his way of telling her that they share mutual feelings).
-----
So yeah, that’s my opinion. I hope I was able to express myself clearly :D
Also, I can't believe you are asking me this, anon. No one ever asked me about my opinion before. Usually, people come for me for my silly fanfic(s) xD
ANYWAY, your question is very much appreciated! Thank you for giving me the opportunity to share my thoughts regarding Levi, especially his relationship with Hange. This was fun to write (and research!), I really enjoyed the process!
Although it was a bit painful too tbh because I had to reopen my old wound by rereading chapters 126 and 132 :') You did it anon, you made me cry... at 12.30 AM T_T)b

it takes a really long time to unlearn but there's no such thing as "cheating" or "half-assing" being a person. if you need to leave the cabinet doors open, leave them open. microwave your tea. sit down in the shower. buy the eggmaker. use your phone to calculate tip.
it's mostly fake posterity rules. who cares if you microwave your dinners. who cares if you use instant coffee. who cares if you stop watching the show that got boring. we all have a different set of skills and a different life and taking care of yourself is fucking hard.
at the end of your life there will be no final scoreboard. nobody is going to judge you because you brushed your teeth in the shower. there will be no final count of the number of times you had the same meal five nights in a row. there will be no fanfare or party because you won at being a person - and no one will be disappointed that you never understood the point of using paper towels to dry your hands off after washing them.
yeah, in this world, people will put up a fuss. i've noticed some of the biggest fusses are over what you'll put in/on your body. the fact that i will regularly eat deli meat straight out of the bag makes a lot of people genuinely concerned for me. but here's the thing: sometimes that's the only way i'm getting any protein. my doctor says i am doing fine. i'm sticking to my weird snacks and calling it deconstructed charcuterie.
they'll say they're horrified because you take a shortcut. that's fine. it's just that it looks like a shortcut to them because they're on a different life path. these kinds of things stand out to them as important. that's fine too. but for you? you've got other things that already make you pretty hard working. and these tiny things - well, they're just clutter on your journey.

Character A separates from Character B to take a breather from the kiss, only to laugh in surprise when Character B starts pulling them on top of them.
"What are you doing?" they question, straddling Character B; feels Character B pressing against them. They blink, swallowing heavily; it doesn't take much for them to understand what that means, as they cautiously grind their hips down against Character B's, testing the waters.
Character B's hands sneak up their torso, hands cupping their clothed breasts, massaging them gently as Character A lets out soft little sighs and breathy moans, hips quickening with speed; ducking down to bury their face on Character B's neck every now and again out of embarrassment and to muffle the noises they were making.
"Wait, wait, wait," Character B breathes out, holding onto Character A's hips to stop them from moving. Character A sits up, looking down at them, heart skipping a beat at the way Character B stares up at them with hooded eyes. "We shouldn't be too loud, yeah? How about we go somewhere else?"

hi i have a question can you give me some levihan headcanons as a couple in modern au?
OMG anon so sorry for not responding to you sooner! I had to sort out my thoughts first because modern AU is not something that comes naturally to me. But anyway, after doing some meditation, I managed to put my incomprehensible thoughts into words…  A little too much maybe… I hope you don’t mind 2.5k words of pure nonsense hc from my silly brain.
P. S I know you asked for an established relationship, but I just could not help but also write about how they met (yeah, I’m a sucker for meet cute and imagining my OTP falling in love in various universes).
Anyway, enjoy this long ass headcanon of Levihan’s friends-to-lovers modern au with a sprinkle of university au and a dash of sports romance genre!
Levi and Hange first meet each other at university. Hange is in her 2nd semester (studying Biology) and has an academic scholarship while Levi is in his 8th semester (studying finance) and has an athletic scholarship (yeah, they are THE couple).
One day a fire alarm suddenly goes off in their university building, and so Hange alongside other students on the seventh floor immediately go toward the emergency exit to evacuate.
Hange is oddly calm during the whole ordeal, but she unfortunately gets stuck in the middle of a panicking crowd. She tries to escape the chaos, but her attempt sadly causes her ankle to twist because apparently, someone has just stepped on her shoe.
Hange does not scream because she is too shocked to even let out any words. It does not even hurt, at least not until she shelters herself on one of the corners of the emergency stairs, that’s when she realises how impossible it might be for her to save herself in time.
Levi—whose class is on the eighth floor—is one of those people who acted way too calmly during dangerous situations. He waits calmly near the emergency exit’s door until he can see that the crowds have settled down.
When he finally “escapes” he notices a girl who is limping as she descends the stairs very slowly.  She is holding a shoe in her hand while she tries to not put any pressure on the sole of her bare foot.
Levi approaches her as he understands her condition. Without thinking, he offers to give her a piggyback ride. Hange refuses but he insists. He tells her that he doesn’t want to be responsible for someone’s death.
Therefore, Hange has no choice but to agree and she is quite impressed that he manages to walk down the stairs while carrying her without breaking any sweat.
When she sees her face earlier, she thinks that his face is familiar, but she can’t put her finger on it until he brings her to the university’s clinic. She hears one of the nurses call him “Ackerman”. That is when Hange realises that he is a professional athlete who won an Olympic gold medal in tennis at the young age of 20.
Just like that, the pain in her ankle suddenly disappears as her demeanour is quickly replaced by a more excited face. She tells him that she has watched his match on TV several times and she thinks he is so cool.
Levi has heard many people praising him that he can quickly recognise the difference between people who say it just to earn his attention and the people who say it genuinely because they like his play, and he instantly knows that Hange is the latter.
However, before Hange can thank him, Levi is told to leave by a nurse because some more people—who pass out due to the shock—begin to fill the clinic.
He later regrets the fact that he did not even ask for her name.
To his surprise though, a few days later, Levi finds Hange waiting in front of his class. She says she wants to thank him for saving her. She gives him a brochure of a medical museum that belongs to the university, and she invites him to come, saying that she will be his museum guide.
Despite Levi knowing that her offer is sort of an odd way of showing “gratitude”, he accepts it without even thinking about it.
During their museum “date”, Hange excitedly walks him through almost all the collections in the museum. She seems to know everything and so Levi is convinced that she must have eaten an encyclopaedia for breakfast that day.
Levi does not really care about science but the way her eyes sparkle in passion every time she speaks does make him reconsider his earlier judgment about museums and science. They are much more interesting than what he remembers from high school.
After their museum “date” he suddenly asks whether she wants to come to watch him play next week. Usually, his mother will come to watch but she can’t that day because she must chaperone his seven-year-old cousin on a field trip.
Hange answers yes without skipping a beat, and so Levi ends up asking for her phone number so he can give her the ticket for the match.
Hange can’t take her eyes off him during the match, and she is practically swooned by him by the end of it.
Truthfully though, they are already attracted to each other right from their first meeting, but Hange believes that she just admires him for his talent as an athlete. Meanwhile, Levi—despite being aware from the get-go that he likes her—believes that she isn’t interested in him (idiots in love, you know the drill)
YET, despite it all, they gradually start to become even closer to each other. They text each other every day and they will often have lunch at the canteen together when they can. Then, somehow along the way, they just became inseparable.
Their favourite place to be together is the library! Levi will work on his thesis while Hange works on her assignments, papers, or studying for many of the academic competitions that she participates in. However, he quickly found out that she is actually quite distracting even when she is not saying anything.
Hange will come to watch Levi every time he has a practice match nearby and then they will grab a dinner together after that. She has come too many times that the coach and some other athletes recognise and befriend her.
Before he knows it, glancing in her direction before he starts his match has become his routine. Something that he keeps doing for years to come.
Levi will wait for her class to be over then he will walk her to the bus stop. He will wait until her bus is gone from his sight.
Sadly, their little “hangouts” don’t last long though since he graduates a few months later.
It is during his graduation that she meets Kuchel for the first time! Hange introduces herself as Levi’s friend but of course, mother knows best. Since Kuchel comes alone, there is still another seat for Levi’s family in the auditorium, so she invites Hange to accompany her throughout the whole ceremony.
Levi is surprised when he spots his mother sitting with Hange, but he can’t hide his joy when he notices how much her mother likes Hange.
When the ceremony is finished, Kuchel goes to ask someone to take a photo of the three of them together. She also takes a photo of both Hange and Levi together. If you look closely at their photo, you can see Levi being subtly flustered in all of their pictures.
After that, Kuchel invites Hange to come for dinner someday at their house, which Hange complies gladly. And so, a few weeks later Hange comes for dinner at the Ackerman’s house and that is when she meets Levi’s uncle, Kenny.
She is shocked to see Kenny there because Levi’s uncle is none other than a guy who almost “killed” her in high school. The story goes like this: 15-year-old Hange was riding her bike one day right after school when Kenny’s car suddenly struck her from behind. Fortunately, she only suffered minor injuries and he was responsible enough to pay for the medical bills as well as saying, “Yeah, I guess I’m sorry,” to her parents.
Levi realises that he is also at the same hospital right at the same time as Hange because he was asked by Kenny to bring the wallet that he had left at home—something that Kenny eventually used to pay for Hange’s medical bills. They could have met back then, but he is glad that they met much later in life.
Kenny also recognises her as the girl that he almost killed but he jokingly remarks that it is just a work of fate that she gets to meet her boyfriend’s uncle way before the two of them officially meet.
They both deny the “boyfriend” claim, but it is during that moment that Hange realises her true feelings. Like she goes, “OMG do I want to be him to be my boyfriend?!!!! OH SHIT I GUESS I DO!”
After that, she becomes shy around him out of the blue which confuses Levi. He begins to think that his connection to Kenny might have bothered her. Levi, desperately not wanting her to hate him, invites her to an arcade.
Hange obviously has a lot of fun there. She is smiling and laughing, she is glowing with pure happiness that makes Levi come to a realisation that he would be so grateful if he could see her smile every day for the rest of his life.
During their walk home, Hange can’t stop thanking him for her wonderful day at the arcade. But Levi is still slightly worried that she might still hold some grudges against his uncle, but before he can ask about it, Hange cuts him with a question, “Hey, do you want to go out?”
Levi definitely does not see that one coming. It is so out of the blue and it shocks him so greatly to the point that he almost walks into a streetlamp.
But of course, he wants to, duh! So yeah, they officially became a couple after that.
Hange invites Levi to meet her parents not too long after that and well it’s quite easy for their parents to accept him when they can see how happy their daughter is when he is around her.
Hange’s father, who has a hobby of collecting antique cameras, is the one who introduces Levi to photography. He even gives Levi one of his old cameras for him to try, and it does not take long before his camera is full of Hange’s pictures.
Regarding their relationship, since they become busier with their own stuff (Hange with uni and Levi with his professional tennis career), they do not really go out together as often as before. However, they try to always make time to be with each other during important moments. For example: Hange rarely skips watching Levi’s match, be it from the arena or the live streaming. Likewise, Levi seldom misses any exhibition or competition that Hange participates in. He even reads all the articles that Hange had written for many journals.
Generally, they like to keep their relationship private. They are the kind of chill couple who rarely show PDA. But I do think Hange might hug him occasionally when she’s happy (maybe when they haven’t seen each other for a while).
Hange moves into Levi’s apartment after she graduates from uni. However, long before that, she has had plenty of sleepovers there. She has already left some of her stuff in Levi’s apartment, so she does not really pack much when she eventually moves in.
Hange works as a botanist at a pharmaceutical company, and she is considering taking a master’s degree in the near future.
She has a much more flexible—albeit packed—work schedule while Levi has a much more rigid schedule as he has to train six days a week at the gym with his coach. As a result, they begin to have less time together.
However, they understand that they don’t need to meet often. They have deep trust in each other, so their relationship is pretty much secure and low maintenance. Though out of the two, Levi is the one who tends to miss her presence the most.
Hange is the one who overshares, and Levi is the one who will gladly listen to anything that she has to say about.
Hange is also the touchy one! They will be sitting next to each other on the couch watching TV, and in the next few minutes, Hange has already put her head on his shoulder and squeezed his hand.
The first thing that he notices after she moves in is the fact that he will have to listen to Hange and be touched by Hange 24/7 until he dies. But somehow it does not bother him at all. In fact, all he can think about is, “Ok, I guess this is my life now,” with a smile on his face.
Levi enjoys cleaning Hange’s stuff! Hange will sometimes go to work with her laptop and shoes suddenly spotless and shining. However, his ultimate favourite thing to clean is her glasses because he gets to see her beautiful eyes HAHA.
Hange has a hobby of gardening so their apartment is quickly filled up with many potted plants (each one has a name!). She also makes a mini garden on their balcony.
Most of the day, Levi is the first one to wake up since he has to go to train early at the gym, but he always has the time to prepare breakfast for both Hange and him before he leaves. Hange usually wakes up right before Levi leaves, and she will always kiss him on the cheek as a good luck charm.
When Hange has to work in her lab, she tends to work until late in the night so Levi will come to pick her up if he can.
Despite their busy schedules, they always try to at least have dinner together every day. Sometimes when Hange works from home, she will either make a dinner or order something for both of them.
They also try to have lunch or dinner with their whole family (Kuchel and Hange’s parents) every month or every two months. Mostly at their place but sometimes at Kuchel’s house or the Zoë’s house.
They rarely argue. If they do, it is mostly out of their love and care for each other. Levi will sometimes get so worried for Hange that Hange starts to feel that he becomes too micromanaging of her while Hange will sometimes get too engrossed in her work that Levi feels forgotten by her.
Their argument won’t last more than a day though since being away from each other is much more miserable than being together. I feel like they care more about each other than they care about their own ego.
I like to imagine Hange as this one post on Reddit about “I have the biggest crush on my husband.” I mean, that’s so Hange-coded LMAO. I mean, despite having been in a relationship for so long with Levi, she still acts like she just discovered her feelings for him (blushing, nervous, buzzing heart, being shy when she sees him up close, being excited for their date, etc.).
Levi is definitely a lot softer around her! His voice is lower, his frown is absent, and he likes to affectionally touch her hair. This has become so apparent that people like to point it out to him, which he denies!
They will have a super simple and quick wedding! They just wear their best clothes as they register their marriage. Then they invite their closest friends and families to a dinner at a restaurant.
There is no proposal. Hange just casually brings it up one morning to Levi, “Hey, I think we should get married. What do you think?”
It's a good thing that Levi has not yet drunk his tea when she asks that or else the tea could have choked his throat to death.
When they marry, they retain their last name since both of them have prominent careers.
Would they have children? Yeah I like to think they would HAHA
SO YEAH! That’s all that I can think about! Sorry that this has become way too long… I hope you like it Anon! Sorry if you found any typos or mistakes.
Also, thank you so much for sending me this ask! I actually had a lot of fun making (and daydreaming) about levihan in modern AU!

Etiquette of the Edwardian Era and La Belle Époque: Tea
Tumblr media
This is a new set of posts focusing on the period of time stretching from the late 19th century to the early 20th Century right up to the start of WWI. I'll be going through different aspects of life. This series can be linked to my Great House series as well as my Season post and Debutant post.
Today will be focusing on the rules of tea with this time period.
Tea was a staple in society, not only as a comforting beverage but as a social gathering beset by strict rules. Etiquette at tea is not only important for guests but is a sign of respect to one's host.
High Tea vs Afternoon Tea
Tumblr media
You're reading both terms and you're thinking high tea is the formal version and afternoon is informal. In fact, no. It is the opposite. High tea was actually served far later, about 6pm/7pm and focused on more savoury, substantial dishes. High tea was more of a lower class tradition, designed to fill the stomachs of hungry workers. The word "high" is derived from the tall tables used. Afternoon tea is served at 4pm, designed to fill the gap between lunch and dinner. Afternoon tea is served at low tables with all the guests seated and involve a lighter meal, more nibbles than anything.
Hosting and Attending Tea
Tumblr media
Tea is an event that happens every day, it's not an excuse for a snack, it's a ritual. One can have tea served in one's own home or at the home of a friend. One must be invited to tea, one can't just show up and expect to get fed. Tea was typically served in libraries or drawing rooms and done times outside in the gardens if weather permits. One had to dress for tea usually in comfortable but appropriate clothing. Men would wear suits, women would wear tea gowns or a simple gown - keeping their hats upon their head, if they are visiting. Tea was not poured by the footman but by the host or if it is a large party, by one assigned guest. The hostess or designated tea pourer would serve themselves last.
The Tea Set
Tumblr media
Tea sets are highly coveted and much remarked upon at tea. One would usually inherit a service (that's what the collection was called) or be gifted it at one's wedding. Services would all match and most households had different kinds, the best usually reserved for important guests.
Teapot: the tea pot held the hot water and tea leaves was was usually made of china and decorated.
Cups: the cups were generally low, shallow.
Saucer: a small plate for the cup to rest on
Tea cannister: where dried tea leaves would rest until needed.
Sugar bowl: was a small container made of china with a cover to protect the sugar from moisture.
Milk jug: a container for the milk
Slop basin: was a porcelain dish used for disposing tea leaves left behind with the dregs of tea.
Tea spoon: small spoon used to stir tea
Side Plate: small serving plate used for food.
As you might have noticed, other than a tea spoon, cutlery is not listed. There would be a spoon for jam and a knife for a scone, most food was designed to be eaten with one's hands.
There is also one instrument not listed here and it's the most recognisable thing at afternoon tea.
The Tiered Tray
Tumblr media
The tiered tray is a set of trays stacked upon one another holding on each one, a different course. Sandwiches and savouries were served on the bottom (Favourites include smoked salmon, cucumber, cress, egg salad sandwiches), scones on the second and sweeter delights served on the top (sponge cake, macaroons, pastries etc). One would begin ay the bottom and work one's way upward.
Making the Perfect Cup of Tea in the Edwardian Era/Belle Epoque/Gilded Age
Tumblr media
Disclaimers: Let's make one thing clear. Tea is not prepared one way for all. Tea is culturally important across the world and every culture has their own rules about how tea is consumed and served. There's no one right way.
I will be discussing the English way of brewing tea in this post.
As mentioned before, tea is held in a cannister before use. Tea leaves were added to the hot water and lightly stirred.
Controversially for most people, milk was commonly added first.
One would then set a strainer in one's cup, tilting the pot. The strainer will catch the leaves and leave your cup almost tea-pulp free.
With the tea added, one could add in sugar. The trick is not to make a show about it or be too loud. One simply should gently turn your spoon from the 6 o'clock position to the 12 o'clock position. Also, the spoon rests on the saucer when not in use and doesn't stay in your cup.
When drinking your tea, put your pinky down. That's an American myth. Simply lift your cup to you, lifting the cup to your mouth by the handle. Saucers are not lifted unless your cup is far away. Don't slurp it, there's plenty more where that came from.
Etiquette at Tea
Tumblr media
Afternoon tea is for light conversation, do avoid heavy topics.
Listen attentively when being spoken to.
Don't talk with your mouth full or stuff your mouth. Typically everything should be polished off with 2-3 bites.
Gloves should be removed at tea because one is eating with their fingers.
If one is leaving the table to go to the bathroom or a breath of air, simply turn to your neighbours and excuse yourself. No explanation needed.
Napkins should be removed from the table and set across one's lap when one is sitting down. When finished with tea, set it beside your plate before you rise.
Also you daub, not smear.
Don't cut your scone but break it.
Don't lick your fingers.
Don't bang the spoon on the side of the cup.
Also there's no dunking biscuits into your tea. It's just not done at afternoon tea.
Never thank the staff for fetching anything - or at very least, don't be overhead doing so.
Always say your goodbyes to the hostess and compliment the tea, even if you had a rubbish time.
Also most importantly, never criticise somebody else's manners. That's the height of rudeness.

I noticed when looking super close at your line art that the there's slight red green and blue on the sides of the lines like an old 80s anime and i think that's super cool! How do you do it?
oh, that's chromatic aberration! i guess you could say its a kind of colour/visual distortion.
it's pretty simple to do, but i usually just use a csp auto action to do it for me to make things go quicker, but i can teach you how to do it manually in most programs.
i'm going to use this silly doodle of me as pompompurin as an example lol
Tumblr media
youre gonna wanna merge everything onto a single separate layer first and then we're gonna work with that merged layer. make two copies of that merged layer so you have three of them in total.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
the top merged layer will be our red layer, so youre going to want to got to EDIT > Tonal Correction > Level Correction
Tumblr media
the level correction graph will pop up. since the top layer will be our red one, select the green level and drag the rightmost arrow on the Output scale all the way to the leftmost side. do the same for the blue level.
Tumblr media
the image should be red like this afterwards.
Tumblr media
the middle layer is going to be our blue layer so do the same thing we did for the top layer except youre going to reduce the green and red levels instead, and the middle layer should be all blue like this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
for the bottom layer, it will be our green layer. same process as before, reduce the red and blue levels so its all green.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
your layers should be looking like this now
Tumblr media
from here, you want to set the layer modes of the red and blue layers to Screen, DON'T do the same for the bottom green layer though. you'll notice once you've done that, the image will look normal again!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
from here, all you need to do is shift the red layer in one direction, and the blue layer in another, to as much of an extent you want. the further they are from each other, the more drastic the effect will be
Tumblr media Tumblr media
and that's how you do it! my other personal tip would be to add a layer of noise set to Overlay or Soft Light at a lowered opacity over the drawing bc it goes well with the aberration, or even sharpen the image.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
if you dont want to do all that hard work though and you happen to have clip studio paint, just use an auto action, like this one!:
https://assets.clip-studio.com/en-us/detail?id=1713222
anyway i hope that helps? ^^;;;
