For the first sentence thing-
“I didn’t think you listened.”
Leave the first sentence of a fic in my askbox and I will write the next five.
“I didn’t think you listened.”
Jamie paused in the act of unpacking the various reusable shopping bags he'd turned up at Sam's door with moments before. He cleared his throat and put a tub of Irú down on the countertop.
Sam knew perfectly well from Ola's own supply chain headaches how hard that must have been to find.
"Look, mate, just because Manchester's a lot closer than Nigeria, don't mean I don't understand being homesick. So, I just thought, maybe you could teach me how to make a few things and, y'know, talk about it."

☔Is there a fic concept you have that you'd like to just explain and share because you're not sure you'll ever write it? If so, what is it?
OH GOSH YEAH THERE IS it's called 'without grace, without understanding' (thanks wrinkle in time) and it's a reimagining of the training arc with roy and jamie in season 3
this got a little long so it is..... under a cut lsdfkjs.
update: 'a little long' this is basically a fic in itself lmfao WHOOPSIES. i guess i may as well actually tag it, enjoy... whatever this is.
started off with me thinking about the myriad of ways that could've been a fascinating plot to use to explore those two characters' trajectories and their relationship to themselves and each other and this sport. roy's lack of trust in himself and his conviction that he ruins things.
and it's like... thinking about how roy's approach is uh. a bit much sometimes and jamie particularly doesn't necessarily react super well to that and has a tendency to take things the wrong way even when they are well delivered, and thinking about roy's concerns this season about his coaching skills. that he's REALLY worried about being a good coach. and the stuff in season 2, where he was worried he was Ruining Phoebe somehow, just.
and there's the jamie of it all. him trying to hard to be better, to do better, not sure how to make it work. how to make it happen. how to be as good as zava, be better than zava. still trying to deserve the second chance he's been given. still a brat a lot of the time bc he is who he is but also trying so hard to be good. be cooperative. be a team player. Work Hard Enough.
so you get into the actual training of it, right. they're working together one on one, and roy is pushing him. hard. and i looked at that and went. okay this is supposed to be humorous but also what if we took it seriously. what if roy pushed him TOO hard and jamie just let him because he’d do basically whatever roy told him to and thinks he’s supposed to shut up and not whine and Be Good. and this somehow ends up pushing jamie so hard he’s just completely exhausted or hurt somehow and roy is absolutely horrified by this. and is like NOPE i cant do this i shouldn’t be doing this and doesn’t really communicate to jamie why he’s calling it off. he just does it. so jamie thinks he’s done something wrong and roy thinks he’s protecting jamie by (freaking out and) walking away and it’s a MESS they gotta sort out.
somewhere in there there's a thing with roy and the coaches or the diamond dogs as a whole, right. after he's walked away from training jamie one on one and their relationship is extremely strained bc roy is spiralling beyond proportion like Oh Fuck, Oh Gd, I Was Ruining Him, I Was Hurting Him and jamie is like He's Done With Me He Don't Want Fuck-All To Do With Me. so things are... weird. they're not really talking. they're both upset and hating it. but roy sort of. he doesn't stop coaching jamie again at all, but he does sort of. he pulls back. he goes stiff and distant and doesn't engage. he doesn't ice him out like in s2 but he's not. there. either.
and so they're talking and he's like. (in his mind the training is like. paused. they're Taking A Break.) but he's like. i need to talk to you about jamie. and the others are like... yeah, sure seems like it! and roy just admits. i don’t know how to train him. what i know how to do isn’t working. what worked on me isn’t working (ted/beard/someone voice maybe it perhaps Didn’t Work On You in a good way, but-) so What Do I Do.
which gives ted the opportunity to pay it forward with some advice and just - positive reinforcement. maybe try approaching this differently. he’s destroying himself trying to make you happy, make you proud, do good in your eyes. he idolizes you, not sure how AWARE of that you are, but he does. still. maybe try using that - tell him what he’s doing right.
(and that's the fuck of it all right is like. there's this part of roy that's been wondering if he's a bad coach for the opposite reason, too. he's been wondering if he's been too soft on jamie, and maybe that was the problem. it was something that was gnawing at him, before jamie worked himself sick/hurt and he realized his approach was massively backfiring, that like... maybe he was a bad coach because he couldn't be harsh enough. but he couldn't just. he couldn't stomach being like the coaches he'd had, he just couldn't do it. and then that happened, and obviously that wasn't it, but it was in there somewhere)
but so he talks a bit about that there, like, it comes up somehow - the coaches he had when he was young. when he was a kid and when he was coming up. he talks about how he was trained and they’re like right okay sure and how do you feel about those coaches now? how did they make you feel about yourself? is that how you want jamie to feel about you? is that how you want to know he feels when you talk to him?
he doesn't. he doesn't want jamie to feel like that about him, to feel like that when looking at him. because roy respected those coaches and wanted them to be impressed with him but he was afraid of them too. and he never thought for a minute that he ever lived up to their expectations. and fuck, gd, he never, ever wants that for jamie.
and that's the point ted and beard and company sort of gently make to him too like.
and so it's like. he trusts you. he looks up to you. he'd do anything you asked him to. that's good, that helps, but it means you gotta be careful too, y'know?
so he has to figure out a new approach. and it's like. roy doesn't need a personality transplant, don't get me wrong. he's never gonna be ted and he doesn't need to be. that's not the goal here. it's about figuring out how to be tough without being mean, right? and maybe a little about figuring out how to let himself soften.
(especially since half the time it’s his own younger self he’s hollering at imo. and so treating jamie better sort of asks him to realize he should’ve been treated better too. Be Kinder To Him And In Doing So Give Your Own 24 Year Old Self Some Gentleness And Grace.)
so roy offers to resume training with him after some other stuff happens etc, this is the part i have less thought through lmao.
(there's a subplot also with isaac and captain stuff and figuring out there's something up with jamie and not knowing what and trying to piece it together. love that too.)
and there's a scene in the end, right, where we get this whole... they've sorted things out, they're resuming training again, roy has extracted a promise from jamie to Speak The Fuck Up if things aren't going well, and he's promised to be less of a hardass generally, and then there's a bit where he like. apologizes for ever having been that hard on jamie in the first place and not thinking about whether that was the right approach.
and jamie just... he shrugs. he's not affected by this. "gotta make sure i don’t go soft, yeah?" and roy is like. no. absolutely not. stop right there.
which is when roy then makes the very specific point that like. when they talk about jamie’s performance on the pitch and how he should approach it sometimes he needs to be a prick, and he needs to worry about being permissive or passive or whatever else, but even if they have to bust out a thesaurus they will not be referring to him as soft. we will not be using that language here. do you understand me?
which... jamie. doesn't, really. he's like ??? and tries to brush it off at first like pshh that’s just the same thing “don’t want to be noncommittal or passive on the pitch ain’t that just the same thing as soft just more letters” and roy is like no. no it’s not. there’s implications in- in calling someone soft that there ain’t in there, and even if it is, so what. that’s a word that’s been used to hurt you. right? and jamie’s just kinda sullenly silent and roy goes right. which is why im not fucking using it. that’s the fucking point im trying to make here. if i can help it im not gonna fucking hurt you because i really don’t want to.
which y'know. is a lot. it's a lot for both of them. but they figure it out.
i’ve been wanting to do something like this for a while tbh but keep being like no that’s excessive- that’s dramatic- whatever this arc is gonna turn into it doesn’t NEED to turn into an angsty character/dynamic study- but honestly who cares. why not have fun with it. why not get into some of the vast unexplored potential here. maybe one day i will.

Artists and designers self rec! When you get this, reply with your favorite five works in any medium that you've created, then pass it on to at least five other creators. Let’s spread the self-love 🤍
Oh, dang, this is tough! My faves aren't often my "best" work, lol. I'll dig back for some old stuff that maybe everyone hasn't seen a million times over. Makes me miss the days of really great events, camaraderie, you didn't have to worry if someone was gonna go "Ew, wincesties DNI. Are you a proshitter?"

Hi! 💖 7, 12, 21 for Mickey or Ian (or both if you feel like it!)
Hello! Thank you so much for the ask, these are fun questions! Um, I did try to answer for both on each which made this fucking LONG (so I put a break because I don't want to flood people's dashes because I'm also rambly lol) so my apologies. Hopefully they're fun answers!
7. What's something the fandom does when it comes to this character that you like?
I give a kiss to all the gif makers who make gifsets of how these two have been looking at each other for years. Especially Ian, to be honest. I mean, the fact that Ian was SO smitten in the beginning, when he was still floppy haired and freckle-faced and the squishy little smile he has ALL THE WAY to the way he gets so excited when he says "now?" at the altar?
Mickey, too -- there's not many times where Mickey looks adoringly at anything other than Ian. And there's really no other word for the way he kind of holds Ian in his regard, he adores him. It's just lovely and I like how the fandom points that out.
Just having those side-by-sides, and the fact that there are many people who -- I think they're right -- point out how the two of them see each other as having been their one and only for so long? It's really just so touching.
12. What's a headcanon you have for this character?
Mickey -- I didn't come up with it by any means -- but I do like the idea that he's actually quite artistic if he was ever given the chance. AUs where he lets himself get into drawing or playing music or is a tattoo artist or even bakes -- I think South Side just wasn't an environment that encouraged that. But when he finally gets to, I just think it'd be really beautiful for him to do that (I also think poor boy needs a way to work through his trauma in a healthy way and I think the arts could be really good for that).
Ian -- I actually talk about this more later, but whereas Mickey has a lot of anger and kicks the crap out of people ("this is your errand?" still makes me laugh) and all that, I actually headcanon that Ian's anger is more frightening and threatening. It just comes out less often (often when he is protecting something else). Like, if they were ever to have kids, and something bad happened to their kid at school, Mickey would actually be the smarter parent to send to that meeting with the principal and Ian would be on "get the kid" duty because I think Ian would scare the ever living shit out of them.
21. If you're a fic writer and have written for this character, what's your favorite thing to do when you're writing for this character? What's something you don't like?
For Mickey, I love writing his internal perspective. Especially writing the snappish sentiments that come with his reluctant demeanor to show that he cares, but then contrasting that with the action that he obviously cares a lot. Just kind of "I don't know what you're fucking talking about, I'm looking out for number one here, so get out of my way," and he's not even lying, it's just that MICKEY is not Mickey's own number one, Ian's his number one. I love when I can tap into that and when that flows.
Something I dislike? When I can't get into that mindset to write him, then fucking nothing's being written lol. It's very easy to not feel right and to not feel like I'm in rhythm with his character. And I have a really hard time just writing through the block with him, if that makes sense.
Ian's a little more complicated. Ian's that rare combination of being deeply romantic and steadily diligent -- I could talk about how complex he is for hours (and my initial answer here did but believe it or not this is tamped down). Ian lets himself be vulnerable when others in his position probably wouldn't, he works so hard to do the right thing but sometimes he goes about it wrong; Ian's rock bottoms tend to be hard falls. But his comebacks? They're so good. So, to actually answer, I find it really cathartic to write him when he's had his feet kicked out from under him and is trying to reorient himself. My favorite thing I've written from his perspective is the "recordings" from all these things I have left to say to you, despite it being dark and tragic because his manic state is worsening, but I was really invested in the writing and exploring that aspect of his character. Others might disagree, but he's just a boy you can't help but root for and I like writing him.
Something I don't like? It's not that I don't like it, per se, but there are aspects to his personality I'm just not good at writing. Particularly two: 1) I'm not very good at writing the silly aspect to his character (he's a middle older brother! he's got wonderful silly moments and puns, but I'm really not good at writing that kind of thing) and 2) I tend to have a hard time writing Ian being just as vicious as Mickey is. (side note, the "fuck you!" to the military police in season 5? I'd flinch. The look on his face? I think I might flinch faster than with Mickey because Mickey's baseline is agitated but that's NOT Ian's baseline, so if Ian's angry there's this intensity to it) Ian is softer, but he can also be fucking dangerous. I mean I believe even Mickey points it out "you'll go overboard and fucking kill him" (or whatever the line is, but I believe it's directed at Ian); Ian just has a capacity for anger that I'd like to explore in my writing more.
THANK YOU FOR THE ASK! I love doing these kinds of games. Here are where the questions come from. And have more questions? I'll answer whatever!
Have a lovely rest of your day!!

10 and 13 for the cpunk ask game :]
10. What's the worst accessibility cockblock you've seen ableds do/make? This isn't really an accessibility cockblock but one time I was walking (limping) and someone came up to me and told me I was limping 'the wrong way'. Like holy shit, ableds are unhinged. What do you have to be on to think it's okay to walk up to someone limping and tell them to limp a different way.
13. Do you have a favourite disability rep? (Media or character) Okay so on Instagram there's this couple named Matt and Paul and they are absolutely adorable like oh my god, love them to death. Paul's a visual artist with Retinitis Pigmentosa and a guide dog named Mr. Maple. Highly recommend checking them out, they're amazing. His tag is 'PaulCastleStudio' and their couple account is 'MatthewAndPaul' As for fictional, Comic Clint Barton!! I absolutely believe he has Bipolar I with psychotic features. Also PTSD. And he's Deaf! Love my idiot archer. Also Bucky Barnes obviously. PTSD, Amnesia, probably TBI, and Amputee. And then of course Steve Rogers who has an entire laundry list of disabilities.

🎃 trick or treat 🎃
Thank you, you lovely enabler, you! ❤️
I'm sticking with the tried and true "sneak peek" treat for the night. It is a first draft, so forgive any awkwardness/errors.
----
The waitress jots it down and the three adults quickly add their orders to the tab. Once she leaves, the table falls silent aside from the occasional thump. Roy glances down towards the source of the sound and sees the heel of Jamie’s shoe bumping against the booth as he swings his legs. Something about realizing that Jamie isn’t quite tall enough for his feet to reach the floor made Roy wants to cry a bit. Fuck, pretty much everything about this day - and Jamie in particular - is making Roy want to cry a bit, if he is being completely honest.
“Why d’ya keep staring at me?” asks Jamie abruptly, and Roy realizes that Jamie’s right: he is staring at the kid - and pretty intently at that. He opens his mouth to answer only to realize that he is completely at a loss. Luckily, Jamie himself provides the group with an out. “Is it ‘cause I figured out who you are, even though you’re way older than you're s'pposed to be?”
And fucking hell, they really should have thought this out better before talking with Jamie, before dragging him out for a prolonged conversation over fucking hamburgers. The adults manage something of a three-way look amongst themselves. Beard nods slightly. Roy drags in a long breath. “Yeah, that’s pretty much it.”
“I know a ton about football - all the major players. I would know pretty much everyone, I think,” Jamie declares confidently. “Well, maybe not all the US players,” he says with an apologetic look to Ted. “They play football in the States, right? Just not very good?”

bound: Has your OC ever been imprisoned or captured? What happened? How did they get out? Did the experience leave any scars?
break: What would cause your OC to break down completely? What do they look like when that happens? Has anyone ever seen them at their lowest?
desire: What's one thing your OC wants more than anything in the world? Are they open with that desire? Why or why not? What would they do to fulfill it?
for rod?
oooh thank you!!
bound - i don’t think roderich has been captured often because he strikes me as a strategist who watches things unfold from the sidelines rather than a direct leader. however i’m sure he’s been captured at least a few times, maybe during the wars with hungary or the silesian wars in the 1700s….honestly i think his go-to strategy if captor is a human is to just off himself and hope his body is left behind so he can escape. roderichs lowkey insane sometimes! if it’s another nation, he does his best to negotiate with whatever bargaining chips he has, but one can tell he’s scared. he’s really not used to being in that position and probably couldn’t effectively fight his way out.
break - this is an easy one. the breakdown of his marriage to antonio really changed him as a person into the icy and proud aristocrat he is today. it really felt to him not just like a personal failure, but a failure of everything hr was ‘meant’ to be—a powerful united catholic empire. it made him strive for perfection, to prove he could do it ‘alone’ (he isn’t really alone but antonio was his equal in a way that vassals aren’t, so in his snootiness he would think of it this way) but he really repressed a lot of the more rustic, affectionate, playful parts of his personality post-1714 and became a huge stickler for etiquette as a security blanket (in public at least.) he’s perhaps loosened up a bit since wwi
desire - sometimes in the depths of his heart…..he wants antonio back. 😔 he knows it’s stupid and wouldn’t work but he can’t help it. antonio was his first love and first heartbreak and i think he misses the certainty he had when he and antonio were a united front against the world. it’s as much about antonio as it is about nostalgia for a time long past. in practical terms i don’t think he’d do much about this, he just thinks wistfully sometimes. if pressed, he would say that his marriage to antonio is the most “valid” in legal and spiritual terms. (in his mind it was annulled on false pretenses)

Trick or treat! Happy Halloween Io! I don't know how this works but I'm dressing up as Naruto so please give lots of candy 😁✌
🍬🍫🍭
all the candy anon!! that sounds super cute, how about a naruto shaped treat?! Happy Halloween 🎃
Tumblr media
When you went out with Naruto and the rest of the Konoha rookies, you had come armed with a little water bottle in your pillowcase, and the gratitude that each house you came to would be giving you snacks that would keep you going as long as the higher energy members of the crew could.
As the evening wore on, you'd lost your friends, one by one, to the night. Lee, surprisingly, had been the first to bail, citing an extra special Spook Night Run with Guy-sensei. Hinata had left with Neji for some kind of fancy function in a nice restaurant downtown.
And so it had gone. Ino, left to take her turn managing her family's festival booth, Choji and Shikamaru with her to pursue late night eats. Kiba and Shino had dashed off somewhere, bugs either chasing the dog or the other way around, you couldn't quite tell, but it seemed the quietest of your classmates was in high spirits with the fresh chill in the air.
Now, even Sakura was heading home since Itachi had come to fetch Sasuke back before their father's curfew.
"Are you sure you two will be okay?" she asked, as you and Naruto committed to getting a few more handfuls of candy into your bags.
"Sure, Sakura!" Naruto beamed. You nodded, warmed still by Naruto's enthusiasm.
"I'll see you for training tomorrow then, make sure to get some sleep," Sakura said, sounding a little tired as she waved and then turned back in the direction of her home.
Once Sakura had left, Naruto turned to you with a grin that made the whisker marks on his cheeks crinkle up. He rubbed his hands together.
"I guess it's just you and me now. Are you ready for the ultimate test of Halloween courage?"
You blinked at Naruto. "I guess."
Naruto flopped over and then straightened, gripping your shoulders. "You guess??"
"Sure," you smiled, his enthusiasm was bolstering your own flagging energy.
He shook your shoulders. "Come on," he groaned. "You have to have a little enthusiasm to beat the best kept secret obstacle course in Konoha. Kakashi-sensei was telling me about it. Apparently even he's never beat it."
You tilted your head. A training course even Kakashi-sensei hadn't defeated, impossible.
Naruto saw your skepticism and pulled you closer. You felt your chest warm. "And apparently the reward if you get through it? Free bowls at Ichiraku. And there's no limit on how many team members you can bring. It's too bad that there's only two but I think we can take it, right!"
A smile spread across your mouth. "Okay!"
Naruto sighed.
"I mean, yes, of course!"
Naruto cheered. "That right! Let's go."
You stared, nonplussed, and laughed at the dilapidated building on top of a small hill in one of Konoha's many green spaces. "Um... Naruto, are you sure no one's ever beaten it because the requirement is that you don't get tetanus during the obstacle course..."
Naruto looked up at the building, fingers on his chin. He picked up some cardboard kunai from a new looking table sitting beside the gate. Then he pressed his foot down on a patch of dirt. A silhouette sprang from the overgrown brambles and fell back down once Naruto peppered it with a few kunai, which thumped off. Of course, this was a ninja village, it should have a ninja Halloween decorations.
"Take some of these. I think we use the items given to us to get through the course."
You picked up some of the cardboard kunai, they were kind of cute , painted to be sort of cartoonish. "Alright, let's do it."
It was not difficult at first, but as you and Naruto worked your way through the overgrown gardens circling in a maze around the house, and then through the rooms and courtyards, you felt yourself get jumpy, and Naruto was too. There were strange sounds in the undergrowth, tripwires, secret doors, swooping, dusty sheets that fell from the ceiling, and mannequins that toppled from the closet.
It was a masterclass in traps, misdirection, and was truly testing the endurance of you and Naruto. You panted as you used an improvised bo-staff made from a mop handle to knock the fresh pumpkin head off of a scarecrow, and slumped over, your heart beating far too fast.
There was another rustle in the bushes. "Did you hear that?" you whispered to Naruto.
He jumped back to back with you, a set of cardboard spiked knuckles clutched in his fist. "Yeah. What do you think it is? Another paper ghost? Maybe those flaming tea bags again."
The rustling came again, from a direction slightly to the left.
You threw a paper kunai and the rustling stopped, and was now behind you. Naruto punched out at the air.
Then nothing.
You traded a glance with your companion, and then the two of you gradually stepped apart to test to pull on the next sliding door of the creaky house.
There was a crack. You looked around frantically and Naruto crouched, ready to spring. Another crack.
Then a CRASH and a section of the ceiling fell in, along with a screeching, furious ball of fur. A dark colored cat fell clawing among the debris of broken wood.
But it had surprised both you and Naruto and he bumped your shoulder, so you bumped the doorway, and another panel to the left sprang open to reveal a humanoid thing draped in tattered canvas swinging towards you.
You shrieked, and then so did Naruto, jumping into your arms as a second skeletal structure sprang up from the floor and rattled towards you.
Forget the tools.
You picked up Naruto and ran.
The other obstacles seemed to blur before your eyes as you and Naruto simply outran them, tears from the speed of the wind streaming from your eyes.
The two of you crashed through a red-painted door, and screamed again as someone else did the same.
A tall figure with disheveled silver hair was draped in a white cloth with red circles painted on it. One arm was poised to cover his face.
"Kakashi-sensei?" both you and Naruto panted.
You're sensei's voice came as the figure struck a pose, arm lifted. "How did you make it here?"
You and Naruto looked at one another and then back through the door. You could still see a few bristling traps bobbing on springs or dangling on string, their momentum lost.
"I thought you said you'd never beaten this place," Naruto points from your arms, accusing, while you say, "We ran very fast."
Kakashi-sensei readjusts something over his face and when he drops his arm, his mask is back in place. "I don't need to beat it if I make it." His eyes are smiling, and you suddenly feel like you've been tricked into training.
"Even the cat?" Naruto asks.
"No, there aren't any cats," Kakashi says, and then he sighs, in a thunderous way you vaguely remember from the bell test.
"Wait, wait!" Naruto flails, almost smacking you in the eye. "Trick or treat!?"
Kakashi-sensei smiles with his eyes and then deflates and holds up two meal tickets to Naruto's favorite ramen place. "Yes, yes fine."
Naruto cheers, stuffing one into his bag, which had miraculously survived the journey through the house, and yours, which he had with his in his arms.
Kakashi-sensei gave you a knowing look though, and you felt your neck and cheeks heat. It didn't stop you from carrying a chattering Naruto out of the house and back down the hill.

💕: What seemingly meaningless action of theirs is most beloved by someone close to them? Do they know how much they love it?
You know the tongue thing? That 😜 thing? Yeah, everyone loves it. Everyone. And most would not admit to it under pain of death.
Roy thinks it is stupidly attractive. Keeley always found it so cheeky and funny. Georgie knows it means he's absolutely not sorry for what he's done or is about to do. Simon is always relieved by it, letting the silliness calm the knot of worry he always has about him. Ted took it as a sign of belief. Sam sees it as confidence incarnate.
I could go on. Just.

🌹snippet from The Same Story? (if you have one)
I just read through the entire thing for the third time and it is still just as amazing
aaaauuugh thank you so much!! i'm so amazed when anyone's read it more than once, it's a bit of a monster sljsds i'm so glad you enjoy it :')
HERE'S THIS- it's a bit of a longer one, later on in the fic from a conversation roy has with dr sharon about all of the..... everything that's happened. he's been having a bad one, and hasn't really been unpacking that until now.
“I’m sure this has all been terribly painful for you.” The observation is delivered in the same calm, frank tone in which Sharon has rendered all her questions and responses throughout the conversation. It sets Roy’s teeth on edge just the same as many of the other things she’s said have done, even so. “For me?” he asks. There’s a faint, disbelieving sneer in his voice that he doesn’t try very hard to keep out of it. “My sister keeps saying the same shit, you know. That this has been hard for me, that it’s been painful for me, that she’s worried about me. But this shit didn’t happen to me. Dunno why you both keep…” Roy waves a hand to indicate the comments that Sarah and Sharon - and, okay, a few other people too - keep making to him.
“Well, stop looking at it from Jamie’s perspective for a moment.” Roy’s hackles go up immediately at that suggestion, but before he can voice his disagreement with it, Sharon shakes her head and elaborates. “I know, but I’m not saying forget it was him. I’m not saying make him not important. I’m saying think about what it means that it was him. For you.” It must be clear from his face that Roy doesn’t really understand what she means, because Sharon considers him for a moment and then keeps going. “This would have been a horrific thing to see happen to any stranger on the street, and it would be completely normal and expected for seeing that to upset and even traumatize you. But it wasn’t a stranger on the street. You witnessed a terrible, violent attack on someone you care for.” Sharon pauses there like she’s waiting for him to sign off on the descriptor. The fact that she stops and waits, looking at him expectantly, is what makes Roy say it. The question implied in her expression, and is that how you would describe him - as someone you care for? strikes him hard in the chest and he finds it revolting. Not the idea that he does care for Jamie, but the idea that he might say that he doesn’t, that there’s any kind of doubt about that at all. It flips his stomach and turns his hands to stone. “Someone I love.” The correction is out before he can stop it. Or, not before he can stop it. That would imply that he had tried to, that he would have tried to stop it, and he wouldn’t. It’s the first time he’s said such a thing directly, in his own voice, with his own words, and it stings coming out. Like it’s the sort of thing Roy just doesn’t know how to say. Like it’s the sort of thing he should have said a long time ago. Now, the only thing that he can imagine in the world that would have been harder than saying that would have been not saying it. Roy swallows hard, clearing his throat to dislodge the lump that’s risen suddenly in it. His voice is hoarse, saying, “He is my… He is my family. This happened to my family.”

for the character ask game!:
gally and 2! 🫶🏼
Hello!! Thank you so much for the ask -- I always love talking about Gally.
2. Favorite canon thing about this character?
Favorite canon thing? Gosh, there's so many, I adore him. Think the obvious things are like his growth from book one to book three, or his stalwart behavior and diligence canonic to his personality, but I'm going to answer with a weird one -- I love that he makes special brew.
I mean, think about it, that's kind of a weird thing for him to do if you look at the surface of his character. If no one knew the canon it would seem like something that fanon would make up to explain the reason why Special Brew was in the story, but it's not. It's canon. Gally's brew is made for the entire Glade. This Book 1/Movie 1 antagonist, that the main character immediately classifies as an asshole, is the one who does this. Further, it is never turned into a bait-and-switch, it's never used against Thomas or turns out to be poison or used to get him unconscious or loose lipped and talking, nothing like that. This antagonist did this altruistically for the entire Glade for no obvious alternative motive. That's interesting.
I mean seriously! It's a strange nuance to the surface of Gally's character (strange but I am NOT saying it's out of character, just gimme a minute). Gally is one of the youngest kids in the Glade, already Keeper of the Builders, takes his job very seriously, is a little arrogant, a bit bossy, pretty fucking skeptical and suspicious, very opinionated, and very protective of the world around him. Despite all of this, he also takes the time out of his already hellish days to make Special Brew. And it's not just for himself, or he'd just horde it for himself to have a good time. He makes it for everyone. He makes enough to share with everyone.
Why?
Personally, I think it's a subtle way, both in books and movies, to show just how much Gally cares very very much about the people in the Glade and making the Glade a safe and homey place for everyone. How much he goes out of his way to do what he can for everyone in every way he knows how. Gally's not great with people on his own, he is probably very aware of how he comes off. But this, this one thing he knows he can do that no one else really can, this thing that he could use for leverage or whatever, but the first thing he does is share it with everyone. It's just a whole new layer of depth to him that I love.
Thank you so much for the ask!!! I always appreciate talking about TMR characters in all ways.
The question comes from the Character Ask Game

“You're sleeping in my bed
But you always have to go home
Can't keep up this cycle
Felt this way since high school
If I don't say goodnight
I won't have to say goodbye when I wake up” -psycho by the wldlfe
💜💜💜 thank you my friend. These ones all waited until my brain came back to writing. I fair enjoyed the imagery of this one. I hope that it hits.
Keys
Like a stray cat she comes.
Before missions, after missions, she appears in his apartment. He doesn’t know how she gets in, she doesn’t make it known when she leaves.
He thinks she finds it safe in grey walls and worn out couch, because more than once he’s found her asleep after a long mission in his bed.
She’d woken straight away as he’d walked in the door, and initially he’d only suspected - but the red hair on his pillow and the light rose smell in his sheets had given her away.
He didn’t say anything.
She never stays anyway.
Natasha calls herself Liho with derision and his heart sinks that she thinks that of herself, he doesn’t disagree but starts to call himself the baba yaga, and tells her they’re both mythical bogeymen.
She smiles at that and closes her eyes in tiredness.
She uses his shower, initially it’s only if she’s over. If she’s come after a mission.
Then it becomes before missions.
Sometimes it’s to get ready.
It’s a slow move.
Clint feels that she’s moving herself in.
So he gives her a key.
It’s left on the bench and he tries not to take it as a rejection.
Even though it’s stupid because it’s not like they’re even dating.
The whole of Shield thinks they are.
Natasha doesn’t come over for days.
It’s likely he’s disrupted their delicate dance.
It’s raining when she does come back, a box in hand, and a solemn look.
“Do you like cats?” she asks.
He shrugs.
He likes all animals.
“Take care of her?”
She hands over the box, and he feels the weight, it’s not heavy but it’s heavy with importance.
There’s a small black cat inside.
“It’s a cat,” he says dumbly.
“Liho,” she gestures and backs out the door.
Clint learns it’s not about him.
She’s on a long haul mission, but didn’t say anything to him. Didn’t say goodbye, and in hindsight, he realises she never does.
But she’s done something more, she’s left a part of her here, in promise that she’ll come back.
That’s the way he chooses to look at it anyway.
He likes the cat, feeds her, sits with her, plays with her when his power goes out. He calls her Natasha and Liho interchangeably and laughs when she comes to Natasha’s name.
It’s not long before she’s back.
He sees the tell tale signs before he sees her.
The shower is used.
There’s a lump in his bed, and Liho sits on it.
“Nat?” he calls, not wanting to scare her.
Liho moves as the lump does.
She sits up and looks to him, looking a little worse for wear.
His heart soars at seeing her.
His home, she’s home.
Clint waves her back to sleep, and to his surprise she goes.
He opts go sleep on the couch, and when he wakes she’s gone.
But then again, so is the key.
