[📍] spider gang and their godly parents !!
Tumblr media
﹫ thread for entertainment, only. it’s just an analysis based on my vision of each cabin and their personality. don’t take anything personally.
﹫ i’ve been in the pjo book fandom for years so yea, it has nothing to do with the series (keep boycotting huh 🫵🏽).
﹫ if you disagree, i don’t wanna know /j.
ㅤ #ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ⟆ ׅ ◌ ׁ 𓆩͟𓆪 ׁ ֢ ⟅ㅤㅤㅤㅤㅤ
Tumblr media
☀️ miles morales ; son of apollo, 7
(second option: son of athena, cabin 6)
To me it’s obvious that Miles would be the son of Apollo, the god of the sun and art. I saw some people type him as Zeus’ son but, other than his electrical powers, he doesn’t carry any characteristics of Zeus. Miles is creative, artistic & passionate; main points found in the children of Apollo. People from this cabin tend to be bright and focused on their goals like their father, while also being extremely friendly and with a strong desire to help others. Apollo’s kids are driven by their artistic passion (whatever that may be) and, in Miles’ case, it’s his love for graffiti. He’s fearless, confident and loves expressing himself through his art, not being afraid to be who he is and much less accepting people determining how he should act. Miles likes freedom and is emotionally driven by his own morals and ideas for his future. Also being inclined towards protective behavior towards his loved ones.
Tumblr media
⚖️ margo kess ; daughter of athena, 6
(second option: doesn’t have)
This girl gives Annabeth’s vibes and I’m not going against it, ya feel me? Athena’s children are responsible, intelligent and organized, and a good example of this comes from how Margo has an important position within the Spider Society – a position given by Miguel himself, who we know is strict when recruiting spideys (poor miles). Margo has a sharp mind, making the right decisions under pressure and certainly having diligence for knowledge since coming from a universe like hers where everything is technology – she’s in fact very practical, determined and confident about her abilities.
Tumblr media
🏹 gwen stacy ; hunter of artemis, 8
(second option: daughter of nemesis, cabin 16)
I know what many will say now, “Gwen is Athena’s daughter!” but nuh huh. This girl definitely has nothing to do with the goddess of strategy. There’s a difference between wisdom & intelligence, and Gwen isn’t wise (at least not most of the time). She’s strongly driven by her personal ideas, her own sense of justice. Gwen doesn’t think before acting, unless the situation calls for it, because her original instinct is impulsiveness. Atsv shows this well, although not as much as I’d like. Gwen is extremely emotional, her feelings and how she feels are her pillars, and with that I have no doubt that she’d be a hunter of Artemis. Loyalty, courage, boldness, wit and a strong desire to protect those she loves because of the fear of losing them; all this compose her character.
Tumblr media
🌪️ hobie brown ; son of hermes, 11
(second option: doesn’t have)
Hermes is the jack-off-all trades and the master of many! His children are cunning and resourceful, and who’s more resourceful than Hobie himself? He’s the perceptive one in his group of friends, the one who observes everything and keeps important information. Children of Hermes also have comedian and prankster tendencies, and these characteristics are so obvious when Hobie mocks Peter B’s arising or Miguel’s anger at not being able to ignore him. He disregards rules, doesn’t fear authority figures, and encourages originality and recklessness. Like, this punk guy stole technology from the Spider Society and made his own watch, he’s the epitome of “doing things in my way” and no wonder he and Miles get along so well in the end 😭 Hermes & Apollo are befriends.
Tumblr media
🪷 pavitr prabhakar ; son of iris, 14
(second option: son of hebe, cabin 18)
SON OF THE RAINBOW GODDESS, YES! Iris’ children add color to people’s lives. They are independent, careful, friendly and natural confidants. Pav is the representation of Iris’s harmony and peacefulness, having a free spirit, living on his own terms and caring for those he loves. His individuality is what attracts the most attention and he ain’t afraid to defend what he believes in! One fact that I love about Pav is that he canonically helps stray dogs, which reminds me of the connection that children of Iris have with nature and animals in general. Despite my second choice in his godly parent, I have no doubt that he IS her son – the popular good character that everyone loves and is super charismatic and high spirits.
ㅤ # ㅤ/ㅤㅤbonus characters.
Tumblr media
⚙️ miles g ; son of hephaestus, 9
(second option: song of hades, cabin 13)
I know, I know. You guys thought of Hades for Miles G and I don’t blame y’all. It was also my first option while analyzing him. But thinking about it further, Hephaestus has a lot more to do with 42 and that’s brilliant. Children of Hephaestus are hard-working and resourceful, but they are also kind and helpful. Feelings are difficult for them, and their interactions are often mission impossible, but they do their best. I’ve already said here that to me, Miles G is just a little more reclusive and introspective, but nothing denies me that he continues to have the same playful behavior as 1610 – the only difference is who he directs this behavior towards. Probably shy, but doesn’t show it. Still, he has all the stubbornness and temper of his father, and he needs that when he’s The Prowler.
Tumblr media
💞 gayatri singh ; daughter of aphrodite, 10
(second option: doesn’t have)
Who better to be Gayatri’s godly parent than the goddess of love, beauty and passion? Unfortunately, Gayatri didn’t have enough screen time to me to talk as much about her as I did with the others, but from what little we had I know this girl has a kind and loving nature, seeing the best in others (the perfect match for Pav, I love them!) Children of Aphrodite are empathetic, gracious, and often the advisors of their friends. They tend to talk about feelings and teach emotional intelligence and empathy – Gayatri seems to be all of that. Not to mention she’s so beautiful! No wonder she’s canonically a model, a common career for Aphrodite’s children.
Tumblr media
🌙 E-42 tiana toomes ; daughter of hecate, 20
(second option: doesn’t have)
I could never leave my girl out because I love her and for me, Tiana exists on earth 42 (and this drawing of her was done by an oomfie of mine). Hecate is the goddess of magic, her children are described as kind and helpful, but incredibly calculated and mysterious. To me it suits her so much, because I imagine 42 Tiana as a stubborn but intelligent and independent teenage girl. She does what she wants and doesn’t care about other people’s thoughts. 42 Tiana is firm in her values, her worldview is unique and can be frightening to others, but she ain’t afraid to achieve her goals. Hecate also represents a greater connection with our femininity.
Tumblr media
🔱 ganke lee ; son of poseidon, 3
(second option: doesn’t have)
It was extremely difficult for me to determine Ganke’s Olympian parent 💀. But I finally came to a conclusion and I feel like he’s definitely my half brother lol. Another character who doesn’t have much to talk about, but taking into account his personality in the comics and his somewhat sassy attitude, I feel that Poseidon is a good option. Ganke is helpful and well-intentioned, and his dedication to his friendship with Miles reminds me a little of Percy & Grover. I like my choice, because Miles admires him a lot and that’s an effect that most of Poseidon’s children have on people.
Tumblr media
🥊 em jay watson ; daughter of ares, 5
(second option: doesn’t have)
“you’ve got an ego and a temper, but you’re a good person.” There’s no better phrase than that to describe a daughter of Ares. I know some will stay ?? since Ares is the god of war, but trust me when I say that not all his children are bad. Anyway, Em Jay reminds me a lot of Clarisse, and that alone makes me sure that there’s no other cabin for her other than Ares. Even though atsv doesn’t have any content about her (or about The Mary Janes), I decided to take her canonical personality from the Spider-Gwen comics into consideration to add her here. Em Jay is arrogant, temperamental and self-centered; she’s impulsive and not afraid of the consequences, no wonder she and Gwen are always racking their brains when they’re alone for more than five minutes. She has all the determination and extremely short fuse of a typical children of Ares, always looking for a fight or someone to blame for things (poor Gwen). Still, Em Jay is loyal and protective, but only with those she truly cares about – which is another strong characteristic in her, although this can create problems as her lack of empathy with other people becomes very obvious. I have no doubt that she’s his legitimate daughter.
Tumblr media
🌆 glory grant ; daughter of nyx, 27
(second option: doesn’t have)
Only those who really like pjo (or Greek mythology at all) know who Nyx is, and I ain’t going to lie that it took me a long time to think about Glory’s cabin since none of the other 20 seemed to match with her. Well, Nyx doesn’t have a cabin in canon either (not that I remember), but I like to think she does so here we are. In my little mind the children of Nyx are quiet but authoritative. They don’t realize when they’re being bossy. They don’t like little jokes, they appreciate silence and are always putting reason before emotion. For me, E-65 Glory is exactly like that. Maybe my memory is weak 😭 but Glory has always been the voice of reason between The Mary Janes, the most serious of all and the one that keeps Em Jay and Gwen from killing each other. I think that’s why Nyx seems like a good choice, since she’s like a mother, and the only one who can truly scare even Zeus.
Tumblr media
💤 betty brant ; daughter of hypnos, 15
(second option: doesn’t have)
Quiet and calm. That’s the feeling that E-65 Betty from atsv gives me, although in the comics she’s not exactly like that. But as this is a hc then she’s the daughter of Hypnos, the god of sleep. People in this cabin are wise, but inattentive and detached from their surroundings, that person who doesn’t see something that’s right under their nose because they’re too busy concentrating on a specific spot in the corner of the room. Betty seems to be a fun procrastinator, who makes difficult jokes, but who still gets a laugh from her friends not because the joke was good, but because the way she tells it ends up being funny. Children of Hypnos have a very small group of friends, they’re generally slow minds, but good listeners and a comic relief. They’ve a calming influence on people.

๑ I posted this thread on my Twitter @/cybermarsbar, but I’m posting it here too since Tumblr gives me better freedom when writing. Not to mention it was an opportunity to write something for my girls, The Mary Janes, as we have very little content about them 😞🤞🏽.
๑ Sorry for any mistakes. English ain’t my first language so I make grammar typos. If you see any, let me know, please! xoxo

Where can i learn about flower symbolism, ive tried looking up some meanings but they were different depending on the source 🙏
Hiiiii anon!!! Sorry i took a while to get back to you but i did not forget…. I remembered…
I wanna say that first off part of the reason you might be getting different meanings is because there often are different meanings! Its not a universal thing everyone sat down and agreed on, though of course there’s overlap for the way they would be used in art and writing throughout the years. But it’s not uncommon for there to be multiple times of symbolism associated with one flower.
First off all I wanna share this lovely resource, it’s a scan of an old book from 1857 that lists all types of different flower symbolism: https://publicdomainreview.org/collection/the-language-of-flowers-an-alphabet-of-floral-emblems-1857
And a similar victorian-era book scan I just got from @hakinnas-overactive-imagination, (thanks again!): https://archive.org/details/languageofflower00gree/page/16/mode/2up
There’s also quite a lot of information on the old farmer’s almanac website!: https://www.almanac.com/flower-meanings-language-flowers
And, this one is not anywhere near as “official” of a source as the others, but I’ve cross referenced it with other things before and it’s been a really helpful tool… This aneglfire website that some woman created in 1997 only to help me make ocs years later lol: https://www.angelfire.com/journal2/flowers/pcd6.html (I would still double check info on here though. There are also other pages!)
As far as religious texts go, I’m the most familiar with flowers that appear in Greek Mythology (Though I know for a fact that they appear in other mythologies and religions too, even in the Bible, though that’s not where my personal knowledge is). Here’s a cool resource about that: https://www.theoi.com/Flora1.html (WARNING: many are sourced from plays, including ovid, which is NOT canonical greek mythology. the symbolism is useful for writing+analysis regardless, but its worth noting)
Speaking of plays, there’s also flower analysis to be done for Shakespeare's works: https://schoolgardening.rhs.org.uk/Resources/Info-Sheet/Flowers-in-Shakespeare-s-Plays
And Hanakotoba is also a super interesting type of flower language, the best resource I have for this one is in Japanese though so you’re going to have to translate the page!: https://hananokotoba.com/sagisou/
And at times it’s better to look at flowers on a case-by-case basis too, rather than their meaning on a single list. Different flowers will often hold different meanings throughout the world (It’s why countries have their own national flowers!) They can be used in different cultures and celebrations to symbolize different things (For example think of marigolds and dia de los muertos, or hollies and christmas, or shamrocks and st. patrick’s day!) Different flowers will have so many different associations depending on the unique cultural context associated with said flower, so they’re really all worth looking into on their own! Hope this is a decent start though lol

Jungkook's Birth Chart Analysis
Tumblr media Tumblr media
His Sun, Mercury, and NN in Virgo tell me he is a strategic, intelligent guy! He is hardworking but can be quite critical when it comes to money. His Mercury and Sun at 8 degrees of Scorpio makes him a magnetic person and can give him Scorpio-like qualities too. NN at 19 degrees shows he can be successful, but he needs to work hard and can indicate being destined in the arts too. Plus, mercury in the 2nd house can also give him a fantastic singing voice!
Moon, Rising and Asteroid Apollo in Leo's tight conjunction damn he is a performer indeed. I'm getting the pours of his emotion into his work as well. His Leo Rising makes sense. He is an attention magnet. He has a huge fanbase and can attract fame easily.
Venus in Libra makes so much sense istg. Again as I said, he is a magnetic person. He draws people in. And the 16 degrees of Cancer show he is a talented guy.
Jupiter is in the 7th house. Idk about his romantic life, but the 7th house can represent contracts and such. It may explain why he has a lot of brand deals and sponsorships with companies.
Uranus in the 6th house shows a change in his work environment. BTS's massive Western success must have changed his day-to-day life, obviously.
I wanted to also emphasize his Scorpio 4th house. Jungkook has been a trainee since he was 13/12, and it must have been a transformative time for him. Chiron shows it must be an emotional time for him (He has a song called "My Time" singing about him losing his childhood)
Saturn is in the 9th house!! 9th house rules travel, media, etc. Saturn rules limitations, time, discipline, etc. It took 3 years/4 years for BTS to enter the Western market, and it must have taken a lot of strength and determination.
MC in Aries. I thought he had a Taurus MC, but I can see Aries. He is seen as a leader, trailblazer, and fire type of passion for his work and job. 27 degrees is a successful degree, so he will have success with his career too.
Lastly, his Asteroid fama is in the 12th house. Also rules foreign lands and music as well. You don't need much of an explanation for this one...
Thanks for reading :) Let me know what idols rising you want me to guess/birth charts to examine in my answer box :)

Not the same anon as the other ask, but I guess my question comes from the difference between personal vs political opinion on people who consume that type of media. Like if someone wants to draw some fake anime kids having sex (let’s say they do it because that’s a thing they like to imagine and not for any satire reason), I don’t think they should be put in jail or anything, but I do think that they’re a creep no matter whether they aren’t harming any real kids or not and I wouldn’t want to be friends with them. Even if they would never harm a real kid, even if their account is marked 18+ only and they rigorously check every follower and block them if they even suspect they’re a minor, I still wouldn’t want to interact with this person because if someone enjoys creating and consuming that content, that is an interest I find disgusting because just because the kids they are imagining are fake it can’t be completely de-linked from the existence of irl children or at least attraction to the traits associated solely with them
As a second, semi-unrelated question, I guess it begs the question on drawn cp (I know you don’t agree with the term but there’s not better one) of real people, like the adults who drew porn of, say, the cast of It back in 2017 when they were all between 13-16? Sure it didn’t involve making real kids do those things, but it was depictions of real kids doing sex acts and I don’t see how them not being directly involved means using their faces to make porn is okay. (Not to accuse you of supporting this, genuinely curious on where you think the distinction lies if any)
Thanks for the question! Appreciate you being thoughtful and respectful about these difficult topics, and I trust that those of you who see this ask shan't clown in the notes.
I think it's valid of you to have your own personal boundaries about who you interact with online. It's clear that you've reflected on exactly why you find this interest disgusting, which is great, we love critical dissection in this household, but I'd like to push back on that a little. I find it interesting that you specifically mentioned anime in this question. If we're talking attraction to traits associated solely with children, that's an area where anime really muddies the waters. After all, it's very easy to find anime 14 year olds with 8 packs and chiseled jawlines and anime 28 year olds, especially women, that look like children — not to mention the 1000 year old loli trope. In many cases, especially in shonen fandoms, someone who didn't know the canon ages of the characters wouldn't be able to differentiate between nsfw art of adults and minors even if they were all drawn perfectly on-model. And then of course we could get into the weeds about the distinction between children and teenagers, ages of consent in different countries, weird timeline stuff that goes on in a lot of anime and creates a bunch of technicalities (like Kusuo Saiki being physically 16 but mentally 21), how this relates to real people with disorders that make them appear prepubescent long after the age of majority, et cetera, et cetera. I definitely understand why it makes you uncomfortable, but I'm generally not as quick to judge creators of anime porn on the basis of association with childish traits simply because anime is so stylized that such associations kind of lose meaning. I mean, I'm attracted to anime men, and I experience zero attraction to people in real life, so it's easy for me to see how what someone enjoys in anime and what they're attracted to IRL could be fairly divorced. I'm not trying to argue that you're wrong, just something to think about, I guess.
As for your second question, hoo boy. The issue of explicit art of real children kinda relates to another issue i've seen people talk about, that of explicit RPF of real minors. It's a conversation that I think demands a lot of critical analysis and discussion that people are unfortunately generally not willing to have in a public forum. For the sake of my answer, I am determining that we are solely talking about minors who are under 18 in real life and are American so we don't have to deal with any age of consent debates. This includes minors who play over-18 characters but not child characters played by adult actors, or else we have to start talking about Riverdale and that's a whole other conversation.
I guess I can start with praxis. Let us assume that we all agreed that this is Wrong and Bad. Come play with me in this space without assuming anything about my position from this hypothetical. What now? What concrete actions could institutions take to prevent the existence of Wrongbadthing? Would it be morally right for people to harass those who create or enjoy Wrongbadthing? The relevant entities here would be the US government, AO3, and platforms that host art. I am against most government restrictions on art that people create, because they will inevitably be interpreted through a far broader lens than their original intention. And I don't think it would be productive for AO3 to ban certain types of explicit fic. People would just stop tagging their explicit minor RPF as such, and then we still have equal volumes of the Wrongbadthing but without the tools for people to avoid it. Not to mention it raises logistical problems with moderation and enforcement. Like, what happens when a celebrity turns 18? Are people then allowed to write explicit fic about them when they were younger than that? Maybe we can all agree that it's bad for a 30 year old author to write porn about a 13 year old actor — but what about a 15 year old author writing porn about a 16 year old actor? Any distinction between the two regarding enforcement would require some sort of age verification beyond self-identification, and that's a recipe for disaster. as for platforms like twitter that would host the kind of explicit art we're talking about, well. i think it's pretty easy to see how any sort of enforcement on a minor rpf explicit art ban would be an absolute nightmare. it's hard enough for social media sites to even enforce a porn ban. now imagine a porn ban that needs to incorporate facial recognition of a bunch of people across all different art styles — im not sure that's even possible. as for harassment — the most common punitive response on the individual level — i dont think that's justified in this case. as you've pointed out, regardless of personal feelings on the subject, this art isn't causing material harm to any real person.
I honestly don't engage with RPF communities in general — it's one of my squicks — and I'm not quite comfortable making grand moral generalizations about people I've never really interacted with. From what I understand, there are commonly accepted codes of ethics within RPF communities, and I'm not really sure how those mesh with explicit fic about real minors.
i am personally...not a fan of explicit RPF fic and art about real minors, to say the least. i think it ties into larger celebrity culture that objectifies and sexualizes children in the limelight. but like. what am i gonna do about it? doing journalism has forced me to learn how to not get outraged or disgusted about things i cant do anything about. i just don't follow those people. I'd defend their right to host their work on the platforms we use, but only because any effort ive seen proposed to restrict that work would cause more harm than good and wouldn't even be remotely effective at its stated goal. in terms of harm reduction, the best i can do is support moderation policies that allow that stuff to be clearly tagged and RPF informal ethics codes that stress a firm division between fandom and subject.
i haven't yet formed a super solid discursive framework that i'm confident in defending about this issue, so i'll just fall back on praxis lol
would love to hear from someone who's more involved in RPF than i am haha!

Short Analysis: Jongho's Golden Voice
Tumblr media
We don't have his birth time but that ain't stopping us from analyzing his chart.
Things we want to look at are 1) second house, 2) Venus, 3) Taurus placements, 4) Mercury, and 5) Neptune.
Scorpio Venus (21°) conjunct Mercury (13°)
Some may not count this as conjunction since the orb is very wide (8°), but generally both planets sit on Scorpio.
That might explain why Jongho suits songs that are darker, more intense, and full of feelings. Jongho's voice characteristic is leaning towards stronger side.
The conjunction also makes his voice pleasant to hear. He does well in showing his artistic skills through Mercurial way (singing, story-telling, writing, any type of communication).
Sign of Scorpio makes him sounds intense, and captivating. The kind of voice that give you goosebumps.
Venus & Mercury sextile Virgo Mars (13°)
Aside from being talented, Jongho really does set a high standard for himself. He could be perfectionistic, hence he tries hard in perfecting and mastering his skills. We aint gonna deny that practice makes perfect, so I see his Virgo Mars really pushes him to improve himself more and more.
Air Grand Trine (Libra Sun, Gemini Jupiter, Aqua Neptune)
Libra is ruled by Venus, and Neptune is also considered as higher-octave of Venus. This placement showed his fondness for art. He has an eye for aesthetic, and he is received well by his generation. Jupiter in this formation also makes the trine much more beneficial. Loads of social charm & charisma, especially in communication form (which incl singing ig).
Abundantia (151) in Taurus
I was looking for a Taurus placement and can't find any in Jongho's chart, other than the possibility of him being a Taurus rising.
Then there is this asteroid in Taurus, it kinda explains his rich voice. It's in 1° and retrograde, so Jongho could possibly find a challenge in directing the energy.
He has Talent (33154) in Aries, which can be associated with his strong physique. I wonder if the 1° Taurus cues to him picking a different career than the rest of his family. He was a pioneer (1°) who chose to be a singer (Taurus) in athletic family (Aries).
Idk. Just a wild guess.
Scorpio Mercury (13°) square Aqua Uranus (16°)
Despite the aspect being tense, I found Mercury square Uranus people usually have people listening to them easily. They may have different way of communicating, a lot of frank opinions, but that what makes them interesting and amusing to listen to. They are unique and can be refreshing in a way. I've seen people getting surprised of his vocal, which isn't so k-pop-y.
Moon sextile Neptune (possible)
There is a possibility of him having Moon sextile Neptune aspect, which can give him the ability to pour his emotions, imagination, and feelings in artistic form.
Thank you for reading.

Spring Awakening Fandom Tag
(By @winter-asleepening )
1. How were you introduced to the show?
2007(?) OBC sountrack on compact disk gift from a friend.
2. Seen a production live?
My honest answer is going to get me in trouble around Question 17, isn't it.
3. Dream role/character you relate to most
Ilse Neumann.
4. Favorite male character
Moritz.
5. Favorite female character
Ilse. Is that redundant with Question 3? Martha, then.
6. Deaf West Revival or Original Broadway Cast?
The OBC soundtrack got me through a very rough time in my life, but as far as the cast goes I'm going to say the Deaf West revival cast. I'm glad it was revived, I'm glad that cast is cast in that cast, and I'm glad they're the introduction for a new generation of Guilty Ones.
7. Favorite song
I love them all equally.
8. Least favorite song
...I don't care for Mirror Blue Night.
9. Favorite quote/line
I'm more of a melody person than a lyrics person.
10. Favorite TV performance
Deaf West Touch Me THEY TURNED INTO A BOAT
11. Favorite cast member(s)
I don't really play favorites with cast members, I just try to find what each new actor brings into the role.
12. Favorite cast member moment
I don't really follow the behind the scenes anecdotes either, but Jonathan Groff forgetting the lyrics to Left Behind except for "all things" is as inspirational as it is horrific to imagine going through. If he can get through that and live to tell the tale, then I can get through a bad day.
Also every time Michael Arden says, "All my best ideas come from [ Andy Mientus ]" is like d'aww they're cute together.
13. Do you write fan fiction?
In this fandom, no, I'm more of a reader.
14. Do you make fan art?
I could.
15. Do you cosplay?
Not really...I don't like the late 19th century fashions? I'm more of a Merveilleuse type (no bra no corset just Spirit Halloween chiton).
16. Don’t do Sadness or Blue Wind?
Those are two halves of a whole song!
17. Word of your body or the Reprise?
OBC I did not like the Reprise because even through the Discman (... that's a Walkman for CD's) I had the sense that it was a "comic relief" moment that relied on the existence of gay boys as the joke.
The Deaf West production kept a sense of respite and relief, and some comedy in the relationship dynamic between Ernst and Hanschen rather than playing on preexisting stereotypes...even though it didn't change a word of the script in that scene, which is amazing on a text analysis level like what happened who used the Captain Planet power ring with the power of heart in this scene, what sorcery is this?
So it depends, because the non-reprise Word of Your Body does a narrative job—Melchior haters can feel free to hate, but I can understand what the musical version was trying to go for with his character, and Word of Your Body was part of that.
Groff's Melchior came off more smarter-and-better-than-you but sort of giving up his pretensions in the process of seduction, and I can understand why that aspect might look appealing.
Doyle's Melchior doesn't have that "he's a ruthless boy but maybe i can change him"—I think he plays Melchior as more sad and desperate, and putting that energy into studying is how his Melchior thinks he gets a handle on his own feelings.
McKenzie's Melchior is an oafish, bookish 14-year-old boy trying to act smooth as he condescends to a Deaf girl. He has as much primal sexual energy as a newborn beagle puppy, which to be clear is none at all. I think that can be endearing, that he doesn't really know what he's blathering about in terms of life experience.
Wendla's a consistent constant performance-wise, all three versions I think balance out to a constant average...so it's really the Reprise that determines which one I like better.
Tumblr media
OBC Reprise was very much worse than OBC Word of Your Body...but, Deaf West Reprise was a little better than Deaf West Word of Your Body and a lot better than the OBC Reprise. But I like the OBC Word of Your Body better than the Deaf West Reprise, at the same time that I like the Deaf West Word of Your Body an equal amount as the OBC Word of Your Body, contextualized comparatively being different than the chronological context that defines its vibe in an individual show's run time.
18. Touch Me or My Junk?
My Junk as a tune — but the Deaf West Touch Me did turn everybody into a boat, that was kinda cool.
19. Explain the song of purple summer.
Ilse recovered from her trauma and now owns her sexual identity, despite the history of everyone in her home and community doing their worst to her in ways that directly targeted that very intimate part of her. Her story is not the main plot of the show, but the fact that she survived and found personal definition means she now has her own voice on which to carry the wisdom of her life. That will be what heals and inspires others. Red or pink sunsets plus blue evenings make the sky in summer purple. At the end of the day, there still is beauty in living.
20. Explain the song of purple summer (wrong answers only)
Butterflies scatter ergot fungus while they fly around, so everybody thinks that everything looks purple this summer. The sky is purple. The rain is purple. The corn is purple. The horses are purple. The fungus is eating everybody's brains. They're all going to die.

Let's Read Peanuts (Yes, all of it) - December 1950
You can read along at the official GoComics page. This month starts HERE.
Dec 7, 1950
Tumblr media
Reminder that this strip was written in 1950. The 19th amendment was ratified only 30 years prior in 1920. Schulz's analysis of gender may not be as nuanced and progressive as stuff you'd find today (which has the benefit of 70 years of academic debate and multiple woman's rights movements) but it was still leagues ahead of his peers at the time and I respect the hell out it.
Dec 14, 1950
Tumblr media
Well I should certainly hope so.
Dec 18, 1950
Tumblr media
Can confirm. This is what every conversation you have as an adult is like.
Dec 21, 1950
Tumblr media
Oh hey! It's the first appearance of Charlie Brown's signature shirt!
Dec 23, 1950
Tumblr media
The first “Charlie Brown is a pathological narcissist” joke. Oh yes, that's a thing.
Other Noteworthy Strips:
Dec 2, 1950 I should bookmark this one. It's a nice explanation of why homespun wisdom in the form of pithy quotes are completely worthless in any practical sense.
Dec 16, 1950 Oh, hey. The first Mud pie joke. Fantastic. Can't wait to read several hundred more of these later when Violet shows up.
Dec 20, 1950 I know what you're thinking and no, that's not Woodstock.
Dec 22, 1950 Schulz's Snoopy jokes can be hit or miss but I genuinely enjoy ones like this. You can really tell he loves and spends a lot of around dogs.
Dec 28, 1950 I just wanted to point out how effortlessly strong the panel composition and light/dark contrast are in panel 2. Something Peanuts doesn't get enough credit for is how good the art actually is (particularly early on when he still drew a lot of backgrounds).
Other Thoughts:
It's really weird to read Peanuts strips from, say, the mid 80's and ones from this year side-by-side because they may as well be completely different comics. The tone, art style and even the type of humor the strip is going for couldn't be any more different. At the same time though there's no one moment where “Old Peanuts” ends and “Classic Peanuts” begins. As you'll see, it was a slow process built one tiny change at a time over decades.
In this month we're seeing the start of this process with Charlie Brown getting his iconic shirt but the process will continue all the way until the end of the strip's run in 2000. As we go through the archive try and see if you can pinpoint the exact moment where the strip becomes distinctly “Classic Peanuts”. You'll find that it's surprisingly difficult.

Foodfight! Deluxe Sound Storybook: Analysis and Discussion
Tumblr media
So here it is, here's the book we're going to read together. That's right, I finally got my hands on a copy of the Foodfight! Deluxe Sound Storybook. Now you might be asking what's so interesting about this, since it's clearly a picture book for children even YOUNGER than the novelization's intended target audience, but if you're as fascinated by Foodfight! as I am, it's an absolute treasure. The front cover is made up of various concept art for the film, drawn by Foodfight! character designer Jim George, and the rest of the book consists of absolutely beautiful hand-drawn illustrations by artist Ron Zalme. It's like looking into an alternate timeline where Foodfight! was animated in the style of classic Disney films like Pinocchio or Snow White. Just getting to see versions of these characters and this story that are actually visually appealing is delightful, and it's reminiscent of the early footage of the film before it was retooled into what we know today.
Tumblr media
The book inexplicably commands a high price on eBay, which is why I haven't had the chance to talk about it before, but now that I finally have a copy here in front of me (next to the multiple Foodfight! plush toys I own because I'm NORMAL about this movie), it's time to snap, crackle and pop our way into this book and see what lies within.
Now, before I get any further, I'd first like to take a minute to discuss the "sound" element of this book. This is a Deluxe Sound Storybook after all, which means small icons will appear next to words or phrases throughout the story, indicating the reader should press the corresponding button from a soundboard attached to the side. Given these types of books are designed for the very young, I'd imagine the purpose is to help teach word association and auditory learning. Plus, kids just like funny noises! This book in particular contains 16 different sound effects, which the front cover describes as "yummy" seemingly assuming the reader has developed the ability to directly taste sound. Given this is a movie-based storybook, you'd probably assume the sounds are taken, at least in part, from the movie itself right?
Well, you'd be wrong! As you can probably hear from the audio I included of all 16 sound effects (played in the order they are on the soundboard seen above) almost NONE of the characters are voiced by their actual actors, and the rest of the sounds are just miscellaneous foley. While I can't say if this is common for books of this nature, it's interesting to listen and hear just how different the voices are. Mr Clipboard sounds far more menacing and less deranged than Christopher Lloyd's interpretation of the character, Hairy Hold's voice is far more nasally, and Polar Penguin is just portrayed by generic blubbering.
The only character to be voiced by their actor from the movie is Kaptain Krispy, and given that he was voiced by Foodfight! producer George Johnsen in the film, this makes sense as he would've been readily available for recording something like this. Some characters don't even HAVE voice clips- for instance, despite being the main character of the film, Dex is represented only by the sound of a spatula flipping. Overall though, the sounds are remarkably well-done considering they clearly didn't have access to any of the main cast members. You'd easily be forgiven for thinking Lady X and Dan actually WERE voiced by Eva Longoria and Wayne Brady in this, as the impressions are surprisingly convincing. I'd say for what they were trying to do here, they did a great job. Now with that out the way, let's talk about the book itself!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Normally I'd start by discussing the inside cover pages, but there really isn't that much to talk about here. The only noteworthy element I can see is that the copyright date is listed as 2007, whereas the novelization is dated 2008, suggesting this was in the works long before the novelization was. But given that these books take a while to print and publish, and that the Sound Storybook didn't make it to stores until 2008, these dates are fairly non-indicative.
That does bring me to another interesting point of discussion though- unlike the novelization, the Deluxe Sound Storybook was actually published and sold at retail, with various websites and blogs from the time being suitably puzzled as to why tie-in merchandise was being sold for a movie that not only wasn't out yet, but didn't even have a concrete release date. If I had to guess, considering the movie was at one point set to release in 2007, it's possible the Sound Storybook was already printed and shipped out to stores to match that release, only for all the copies to start gathering dust when the movie didn't come out. Retailers, likely not wanting to destroy stock they'd been sitting on for quite some time, sold the books for cheap in the hopes that SOMEBODY would buy them. And thankfully somebody did, which is why we're able to talk about it today! Despite this book being far more expensive than the novelization, it's also far easier to find a copy given it actually made it to shelves, making it easily the most accessible of all the Foodfight! books. So if you ever feel like dropping way too much money on a children's book from over 15 years ago, eBay has you covered.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just like the movie, the book opens with Mr Leonard closing his store for the night as the last customer of the day leaves, only obviously presented in a way that's far more aesthetically pleasing. Of note is that he appears to be locking the doors from the inside, trapping himself in the building as it transforms into Marketropolis. The man's going to have a heart attack when he sees the what the cereal mascots do after dark... (seriously though, I think it's just for practicality's sake, so we can see both the inside of the store AND him on the same page)
This beautiful illustration is accompanied by some narration from our hero Dex Dogtective, telling us how even though we may think a supermarket is just a place to buy food, we'd actually only be half right. I find it interesting that he mentions you "might recognize him" from the Cinnamon Sleuth cereal box- given at one point there were plans for a real Cinnamon Sleuth breakfast cereal to be released in stores, it seems like they were trying to allude to this while also leaving it somewhat ambiguous in case the food licensing deal didn't come through and no actual cereal ended up being produced. Which is what ended up happening, so it's a good job they just said you "might" recognize him! I also find it funny that Sunshine's raisin packages are the same size as the boxes of Cinnamon Sleuth- who's ever going to need that many raisins? Maybe if you were manufacturing your own Raisin Bran and needed to add two scoops to every delicious bowl, but that's still too many! I always imagined Sunshine Goodness raisins in those tiny snack-packs like Sun-Maid or something, not a giant 17oz cardboard box...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The store transforms into Marketropolis, and I know I've said this already but these illustrations are absolutely FANTASTIC! The character designs look so charming in this artstyle, and it really makes me wish the whole movie could've looked like this. Seeing Marketropolis actually resembling a city at night is fantastic as well, given that it's so horribly lit in the finished film it always looks like it's the middle of the day (despite the basic premise of the film literally being this is what happens when the supermarket closes at NIGHT). Dex and Sunshine look really cute together, and I think it's adorable how he refers to her as "his gal" in the narration. Dex talks about how this is where him and all the other product icons reside, and I can't explain why but I really like the way it's phrased as "At night, this is our world. This where we all live." Dex then goes on to talk about his best friend Daredevil Dan, describing him as "the world's greatest stunt pilot flying squirrel on a chocolate bar wrapper", which is perhaps the most overly narrow superlative I've ever heard. Just how many other stunt pilot flying squirrels are there on the front of chocolate bar wrappers?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dex goes on to explain that not everyone's as sweet as his Sunshine and that he often has his hands full keeping the aisles safe, as we're treated to another fantastic illustration, this time of him fighting Fat Cat Burglar off with his price-tag gun. I don't have too much to say about these two pages, other than once again mentioning just how much I love the art in this. Part of why I bought the Deluxe Sound Storybook to begin with was so I could share the artwork with everyone, as I simply LOVE how it looks- even Fat Cat Burglar looks great when drawn like this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dex attempts to propose to Sunshine, only for Dan to crash his plane while attempting the loop-de-loop, with her disappearing on her way to check on him. What's described here more or less happens the same way in the film, but the artwork depicts it very differently. In the movie, this all happens outside whereas here it's in some sort of restaurant or club. In addition, Dex is wearing his white tux but at this point in the movie he's still in his Indiana Jones gear, and Maximilius is also in a white tuxedo while in the movie it's purple. (However in the case of Maximilius, this is just down to to the white being an earlier look for the character, as on the cover and throughout the rest of the book he's still wearing it)
I have to say, it's crazy how much of this is dedicated to what happens in the first 10 minutes of the movie. We're nearly halfway in, and we've only just gotten to Sunshine's disappearance- not that it's uncommon for storybooks like this to take liberties with the plot, but it does mean the majority of the movie's events are crammed into approximately ten pages and so have far less time to breathe than the first half of the book.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Following Sunshine's disappearance, Mr Clipboard arrives at the supermarket pushing Brand X products, and we're told customers are going crazy for them. While this does happen to some degree in the movie, the art we're seeing here is of a scene that was cut out of the finished film and we've only previously seen in the novelization. In said scene, Mr Clipboard has had a giant Brand X display set up in the store, with a cardboard washing machine that sprays Elixir into the air and attracts customers into buying Brand X products. This scene is important for two reasons- not only does it establish how a washing machine ends up in the store (explaining how Dex and Dan end up trapped in a dryer later on) but it also shows how Brand X's plan is affecting the real world, and the danger it poses to not only the store but to people everywhere as well. On top of that, it's cool to see the way the Brand X display resembles Lady X's tower, as in the movie we don't get to see what it looks like during the day.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sometime after Brand X's arrival, Dan goes missing and Dex follows the trail right to Lady X. It's here we see yet another scene that was cut from the film and previously only in the novelization- Dex's first encounter with the Xobytes in Lady X's penthouse. (Dex even has two price-tag guns here, something I saw mentioned in the novelization and assumed was a mistake on the author's part as we only ever see him with one in the movie). I really think this scene should've been in the film, as it serves as a proper introduction to the Xobytes, as well as the threat they pose to Dex and the other Ikes.
Dex attempts to fight off the Xobytes with his price tag guns, but he's quickly defeated and wakes up in Lady X's dryer where he finds Dan. The fact that it's a dryer and not a washing machine gives some indication as to which draft of script author Justine Fontes was working from when writing this- the I Can Find It! book (which I covered in a previous post) was based on an earlier draft and had them trapped in a washing machine full of water instead, seemingly changed due to this being too difficult for animators to render. As such, we can hypothesize this book was likely based on the same draft of the script the novelization was, given it's a dryer in both (and later on in the story Brand X are defeated by a lightning storm, whereas in earlier drafts/the I Can Find It! book it's a flood)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dex and Dan escape the dryer, only to find Brand X is building an entire army of the Xobytes encountered earlier. This scene goes down more or less the same as it does in the movie, but visually looks very different. In the movie Dex and Dan see the army of Xobytes while looking through an air vent, whereas here they spot them from around a corner. In addition, the Brand X War Room looks very different to the way it does in the movie, on top of the Xobytes' poison being green instead of black. However these changes are likely down to Zalme not having any reference images of the room to work with, and so instead coming up with his own version of the design (given even in early footage it looks the same as it does in the final film). In addition to that, some degree of creative liberty is always taken with these kind of books anyway- what looks good on film doesn't necessarily look good on paper, and so you have to come up with something that still looks dynamic and visually appealing as a 2D image.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The book then skips entirely over the part of the plot where they cross the supermarket during the day, visit the Expiration Station, and meet Vlad Chocool, and we instead go straight to Dex and the other Ikes waging a food fight against the Brand X army. While this is a mostly accurate depiction of the battle as it happens in the film, there are still a few changes. For one, Kaptain Krispy and Twinkleton (the blue elephant) are part of the scene, despite both having been rubbed out by Brand X at this point in the film. Granted, the book skips over this part of the plot as well, and they likely wouldn't have wanted to include characters being killed in something intended for very young children, so it's not surprising this change was made. However, it does mean the Ikes are waging a war against Brand X before they've actually done anything to wrong them. I guess Dex and Dan knew they were building an army though, so it was best to just deal with the threat before it became a more serious problem.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Dex gives the signal for his secret plan, and Cheazel T Weasel starts a an electrical lightning storm, destroying the Brand X buildings while the rest of the Marketropolis is safety protected by lightning rods. It's a shame Cheazel only gets a brief mention here- I would've loved to see how he looked in this artstyle, and given he was voiced by director Larry Kasanoff they could have easily got him to voice a line for the soundboard as well. Seriously, how did Lord Flushington get a button on there over Cheazel? One is a toilet frog who has maybe two scenes in the entire movie, and the other is a classic "lovable rogue" character who plays a key role in taking down Brand X, helps save the day, and was even important enough to get his own plush toy. The Brand X Mashed Potato Man is similarly absent from this version of the story, but despite my preference for the character, he isn't particularly relevant to the plot, so this makes sense.
In the midst of the chaos, Dex finds Sunshine at the top of the Brand X tower, and as I'm sure you already know from either watching the movie or reading my analysis of the novelization, it's revealed Lady X had her kidnapped. (I know this is all incredibly obvious, I just like describing the plot of things, okay?) As the building collapses, Dan finally gets the loop-de-loop right and saves both Dex and Sunshine, daring the day and flying away. And damn, I know I've said this at least three times already, but I still can't get over how fantastic these illustrations are! The characters look so charming in this artstyle and they're drawn so dynamically against the night skies of Marketropolis, it's just a visual delight to look at. The one downside to all this is the book's extremely short length- just two more pages and it's over already! I'd have happily read a version of this that was double the length, so we could see how the rest of the characters and story would've looked drawn this way. (We didn't even get to see the Copabanana in this version of the plot) Still, it has all the major beats of the film covered, so let's press on and see how it ends.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mr Clipboard comes stomping through the store, threatening to destroy Marketropolis. Dex gets Maximilius to use a piece of dental floss as a tripwire, and as Mr Clipboard's head hits the ground it breaks open, revealing he was one of Lady X's robots the whole time. Once again, the Marketropolis is safe, and Dex and Sunshine can finally be together.
This is more or less how the ending goes across all versions of the story (except the I Can Find It! book which Mr Clipboard is entirely absent from), but it does leave out the Lady X revealing she used to be Priscilla Pussly, the Ike for a failed brand of genetically giant prunes, along with Sunshine beating her up so badly her plastic surgery comes undone and she's transformed back into the hideous prune she once was. I'm glad this was left out- as much as I've warmed up to Foodfight! over time, I always thought repeatedly hitting a woman so badly that it destroys everything she's done to feel good about herself was a pretty horrible way to end things. Like yeah, destroy her sense of image and humiliate her in front of everyone, THEN kill her? That's so cruel, aren't Dex and the other Ikes supposed to be the good guys?
Either way, with that we reach the end of the Deluxe Sound Storybook. Despite consisting of an incredibly trimmed-down version of the movie's plot, the beautiful artwork was worth the price of admission alone, and it was truly fantastic to see characters and environments from Foodfight! rendered so beautifully. I'd say it's up there alongside the novelization, meeting the (incredibly low) bar of versions of Foodfight! far better than the finished film. I'm really glad I got to share this book on my blog too- while the Deluxe Sound Storybook has been talked about across various places over the years, nobody made its contents available in their entirety before now. I hope you all enjoyed taking another dive into the fascinating world of Foodfight! merchandise, and shortly after this post I'll make my scans of the book available on the Internet Archive for anyone who wants to check it out for themselves.
If you can believe it, long before I started this blog, all I ever wanted out of Foodfight! was a copy of this book someday so I could see what the movie would've looked like if it hadn't been spoiled before its time. But then I stumbled onto the novelization and realized I just HAD to write about that, then ended up interviewing a cast member, and ultimately ended up getting involved in a documentary that'll satisfy everyone's curiosities about Foodfight! a million times better than the Deluxe Sound Storybook ever could. However, finally getting to discuss what I was originally so fascinated by makes it feel like my blog has truly come full circle. Thank you for joining me on this journey, and I'll see you next time!

A drunken analysis of fandoms I did on a long flight in 4 thousand words or less
Introduction
Please let me set the scene. It's past midnight, an obscene hour if anyone's asking. There's a young lady, around the age of 16 to 24, in the corner of her room, which is decked out with posters, with the lights off, lit up only by the light of her bedside lamp. She probably has school or responsibilities next morning, but she's not showing signs of going to bed. She's perched at the edge of her spinny chair, eyes eagerly running over the glowing words on her computer reflecting off her face. This could've been 2006, or 2014, or 2018. Frankly, this set-up is applicable as long as the internet existed. There's a lot of pages the girl might be going on, many appropriate and common to the times. Possibly early internet forums, if it was 2006, young and innocent and ready to find friends from afar. Maybe Tumblr, the popular social website of young, introverted girls in 2014, ready to share to the world what was happening in their lives, a breakup or a struggle with themselves or simply to gush over something they liked. And if it was 2018, it could been any social media website you can think of. Truthfully, I can't imagine a girl on a PC in 2018 instead of a phone, so there's the flaw in my set-up.
But no matter what, people nowadays aged 30 and below most probably have a memory of eagerly browsing the internet dead in the night, searching for friends within their loved specific niche that they couldn't find in their day to day life's social circle. But the internet isn't what I'm to talk about today, but one specific niche that most, if not all people on the internet have encountered -- fanatic domains, or fandoms, this gigantic monster of conflicting opinions and shared loves. You might be shaking your head at me, this uncultured swine, don't I know about fan gatherings of the past? People in a web of letters ready to discuss their favorite character of The Hobbit? Yes, very much so, and very much not so. The way the internet is made makes everything available for everyone to share, read, and reshare, making loving something incredibly easy and information quick to consume. In the past, if you needed to find fellow lovers of The Hobbit, you would need to hopefully bump into someone at the store who shared the same interest, who'd introduce you to this other friend and another friend until you've got this group of friends all loving the same book, and all waiting outside eagerly for the release of The Lord of the Rings, buzzing with ideas Tolkien might have for his next book.
There are many more stories to tell of fans of the time, some more vivid and most probably more accurate than my retelling, but there is one constant between them, you needed to be at the right place, at the right time, or you needed to know the right people. Nowadays, however, you could just type 'Hobbit' into whichever browser you're using, and there would be years upon years of information and entertainment for you to enjoy. A precise analysis of the High Elves and their motives along with counter arguments on why they're the best? Look no further than fan sites that pop up, with people dedicated to dissecting the book in detail. An imaginary situation of Thorin and Bilbo meeting in a coffee shop in New York? Well, there are way too many websites for that, early blogs and independent websites or large commercial monsters like Fanfiction.net or Wattpad. Simply a place to gush about Legolas? Forums or places like Reddit and Tumblr will find you a lots of fellow fangirls with a never ending abundance of fan art and reader-inserts. A comparison between the movies and the book? Tumblr has that too, and you'd find fourteen year old girls doing the most precise analysis that's lacking in their English essays. (This is slightly hypocritical coming from a teenage girl analyzing fandoms instead of the themes of Frankenstein)
I could go on and on forever, and this isn't even a fandom I'm involved in. In better words, there's no lack of fellow fans on the internet, too many, if some people would say. Especially with popular books and big fandoms, this gives birth to many subcultures simply of that particular book, along with terminology that seeps into every young girl's vocabulary. It's really beautiful in the way you can observe online fandoms and their evolve from a tiny, niche corner of the World Wide Web to this day's monster of so many hearts poured out, seeping into every corner of the internet, with references even in the wildest and most different of scenarios. In this essay I will attempt to analyze one of the biggest online cultures, it's subcultures and their online culture, and one funny thing called fanfiction, along with guiding you on the path of every Tumblr girl's road of discovery and growth with their introduction to the internet world.
Fanfiction
Fanfiction is such a large sprawling web of interconnected night owls there's a whole subculture just talking about the unique experience of reading fanfiction. Born from early glitchy fanpages to scattered stories around long lost websites such as LiveJournal and short scribbled stories on DeviantArt to the big three nowadays, Wattpad for the teenage girls, Fanfiction.net with the memories and for the classic and old fandoms, lastly Archive of our own with everyone and everything in the most beautiful and horrifying sense. Its something everyone that's been on the internet for as early as fifteen years ago would probably know about. Some with disdain, others with morbid curiosity, and the rest with fond memories. The reputation that fanficition is simply badly written porn isn't wrong per se, just look at any Ao3 (Archive of our own) page, but there's so much more.
People look down on it, call the writers 'unoriginal' and 'illiterate' and just silly 'fourteen year old crazy fangirls'. But it's not, at least, not completely. It's a safe space for people who just want to take these funny little characters of their youth and put them in these either torturous or cute situtations, mostly romantic and homosexual, but also experimental and new and beautiful, with some amazing works of literature coupled with many people finding their love for writing and starting their journey with a 5 + 1 story of their favorite two characters. Fanficiton also varies a lot, from a love letter to the original authors or a beautifully written protest of the story direction, or even just using premade and well-loved characters to tell a personal struggle in different words.
Heck, some of nowaday's popular and maybe slightly morbid terms come from fanfiction, with a simple battle of tongues for dominance or a soft epilogue with your love to being tired of choosing and always having to choose and never getting to choose you. Yes, there's a lot of horrible fanfiction, don't we all know it, and most of fanfiction is unreadable, unless you're really desperate, but whenever you find a gem of a find, with proper punctuation and a well thought out plot that just nails all the tropes which makes you cry and laugh with a pairing you've never even considered before and it's long and unproblematic enough for a reread, those moments are just pure joy, one that you'd never expirence without even a month deep in fanfiction.
One primary counter argument is that these words people smush together of someone else's characters aren't real literature simply because it isn't original, but if we're going there, why aren't we shaming Shakespeare? How dare he write these great fanfictions of Greek myths and publish them, making them some of the most legendary literature of all time. If your whole criticism of fanfiction that it isn't original, I would like you to reevaluate your books, for there are so many popular stories that aren't 'original', and if your definition of fanfiction is a rewrite of a book or story built upon another, there are so many pieces of English literature you would not enjoy.
But the main thing you're here for is to understand what this subculture actually is, so let me get back on topic. Let's start with something simple, give me a show of hands if your first fanfic, (short for fanfiction) was from either the Harry Potter books, the MCU, or the pioneer, the television series Supernatural. Supernatural is a series familiar to me not for it's television merits, having never watched the show, but its impact on this internet subculture. That fandom gave birth fanfiction's many terminologies, short forms, and something that has been splayed on newspages recently along with the rise of AI, many sub-sub-cultures and stories, most famously ones like the Omegaverse (Don't Google this and don't look at the tags) and Coffee shop AUs. Maybe as someone completely separated to this culture you were following along, just barely, but now you're confused, what's an AU? Well, dear reader, that is but one of the many inventive terminologies of this subculture. Let's take a look at this seemingly gibberish sentence: "hp hp/dm otp coffee shop au ewe slow burn meet-cute enemies to lovers"
I hope I have evoked some long forgotten Wattpad Drarry memories for some. The way fanfiction terminology has evolved to suit the needs of readers is a little like a developing language, with constantly being fine tuned until it reaches the perfect sweet spot, but still forever evolving to keep up with the times and climate. Like how early writers needed to specify platonic relationships from romantic ones and thus standardizing the sign & and / respectively. Or how writers loved the characters but craved more for them, thus creating popular AUs or Alternate Universes for them, like ones which are set in the modern day, others without powers, and some in simply a coffee shop meet-cute. Some writers going further with these characters leading to crossovers, letting Hermione volunteer as tribute and Katniss fight along Hawkeye.
As fanfictions evolved to suit the author's desires, readers invented more and more terms for them to group their favorite mush of words, leading to newbies usually browsing some Ao3 veteran's Tumblr blog for correct fanfiction etiquette along with a dictionary of the terminology. By the way, the Drarry story was: "A Harry Potter slash (usually meaning a homosexual romantic relationship, coming from the / sign) fanfic with Harry Potter and Draco Malfoy, my One True Pairing, where they meet in an Alternate Universe in a coffee shop after the Battle of Hogwarts, ignoring the epilogue and Rowling's ending, and a slow, gradual romance with them going from enemies to lovers (this is very self explanatory).
Ships
Relationships are always a thing in books and movies, especially romantic ones, but there’s a lot more to it for the fans once the book is over. There are the canon relationships, the ones stipulated by the writers and are thus, canon, and the non-canon relationships, or canon relationships, which are created by fans and do not exist in the canon storyline. They are similar to headcanons but are more prevalent, with many fanfictions centered around the fan created relationship. These can also be called ‘ships’. We’re going to focus on non-canon relationships first. They are usually created by fans who like a specific pair of characters together, which aren’t mentioned in a relationship in the books or movies, and put them together used in a series of headcanons and fanficitions. Ships are very prevalent in fandoms, even when the character is said to be in a canon relationship with another character.
One very popular ship on Archive of our own is Draco Malfoy and Harry Potter with more than 56 thousand stories, despite both of them having a heterosexual relationship already established in canon. One thing that fans use to address or name a ship, both canon or fanon, instead of just saying “X character and Y character” are ship names, using a portmanteau, smushing two words together to make a new word. This originated from the Supernatural ship of Dean Winchester and Castiel, taking the beginning of Dean’s name and the ending of Castiel’s to form their ship name, Destiel. Some popular portmanteau ship names are Drarry and Romione. Another type of ship names, instead of being a portmanteau of their names, but a combination of something associated with them. Take the popular fanon ship of Sirius Black and Remus Lupin, their most common ship name is WolfStar, due to their names having similar ending, it is hard to create portmanteau of their names, and so fans used things associated with them, Remus’ lycanthropy giving “Wolf” to the name, and Sirius being named after a star, giving “Star” to the name. Most fandoms have popular ships, with fandoms of their own of those ships, but there are two types of ships that fall outside of this category: rarepairs and crackships.
Rarepairs are usually a pairing that isn’t popular and usually with a small following or of the author’s creation, such as Cho Chang and Dudley Dursley in Harry Potter. This is a viable ship, able to exist in the confines of canon and would generally be a healthy relationship. However, due to both these character having minor roles and never being seen interacting, this is a rarepair with only one or two headcanons and fanficitions, usually without a following, but just visitors of an author’s fanfiction. Crackships are usually a pairing of two characters that shouldn’t be paired and wouldn’t be in a romantic relationship in a normal setting, such as Bellatrix Lestange and Hermione Granger, based on canon evidence of the two character, it wouldn’t be a healthy or viable relationship, due to their age-gap, moral difference, general unhingeness of Bellatrix Lestrange, and other canon reasons. Crackships usually appear in many forms, such as situations where they act out of character or with different upbringing, humorous situations, one-shots, and straight-up porn at times. Crackships don’t usually appear in headcanon, but rather in fanfictions written solely for the crackships.
One completely separate category of ships are reader-inserts, these appear in text posts, headcanons, and fanficitions. Usually, these are written in second-person with the sole or at least main purpose of the fanfiction is for the reader to engage in a relationship with a specific character, platonic or romantic. Writers use words such as Y/N, meaning ‘your name’, and different things such as YHC (your hair color), or YLN (your last name) to make the reader insert themselves in the story by using second-person and making the character as much as a blank slate for reader to add on to their personalities as much as they want.
One glaring downside, or upside, of the entire shipping part of a fandom are the disagreements. With the inclusion of popular fanon ships, with sometimes the fanon ships gaining much more popularity than the canon ship (such as Marvel’s canon relationship of Steve Rogers and Peggy Carter often disregarded in favor of other ships such as Steve Rogers and Bucky Barnes or Steve Rogers and Tony Stark), it leads to many arguments to much ship is the “superior” one, with many apologists going to great lengths to defend their favorite pairing. A very well-known ship disagreements are between the canon ship Romione (Ron and Hermione) and the fanon ship Dramione (Draco and Hermione), leading to many arguments on internet forums and long posts with people either defending their favored ship or undermining the other, with some even bashing the opposite character (Ron or Draco).
Headcanons
Another thing about fandoms which is very similar to fanfictions but in a much simpler way is headcanons. Something that deviates from canon (the established storyline and characters) or something we just don't know about. One example could be 'I headcanon Harry Potter as bisexual' This could be possible, as even though he is only mentioned as in relationships with female characters, his sexuality is never mentioned, and it is often mentioned in the Harry Potter books with Harry complimenting many male character's looks, leaving it in the realm of possibility. Another slightly different kind is 'I headcanon muggleborn students constantly making pop culture references' This isn't in line with canon, as though the story is told from Harry's perspective, a wide spread thing like that would've been mentioned, but instead, there's never a major transitional struggle with muggleborns, even with Harry, who was raised by muggles, showing that most muggle borns adopt their magical heritage and birthright in favor over their mundane one.
Headcanons are fun things to simply state in a Tumblr text post or a conversation between friends, not needing the brainpower to curate a whole story yet letting you to express your love and creativity along with wants for a series and character. Usually, however, some headcanons become so widespread they are adopted as canon, or something mentioned so many times in fanfic that people write it down along with character characterizations. Such as in the MCU, there is always a running mention of Clint climbing in the vents, even though this is never mentioned in either the movies or comics, it in actuality being a headcanon which it's lines with canon has become so blurred it's common appearance in fanfictions can lead me to believe most of the community has shelved this fan made characteristic of Clint along with his canon characteristics. Another notable mention is Remus' love for chocolate in Harry Potter. In the actual books, there are only a few lines of Remus offering chocolate to Harry, and all of them are in medicinal situations, as shown in one line with Madame Pomfrey. However, this is a favored headcanon, this characteristic adopted as canon and appearing in other headcanons and most, if not all, Marauder-era fanfictions. Most readers would be hard pressed to believe JK Rowling didn't intend Remus Lupin to be this cocoa lover.
Another thing that runs along headcanons, cut from the same cloth but different in patterns, are common misunderstandings or assumptions of a character, some incorrectly taken as canon, such as Draco's middle name, which is never mentioned, not in the books nor one of Rowling's websites, but many fans believe it to be Lucius due to a parallel with Harry's middle name and early writers using it as placement and other fanfiction writers adopting the name as the medium. Other things that are similar to this in fashion but are very obviously incorrect facts to canon, but so often used in fan conversations that it may as well be, but are still not confused as canon, such as the widespread use of 'Dan' and 'Emma' to name Hermione's parents, and the belief that the Marauders along with Dorcas, Lily, Mary, and Marlene were one big friend group.
Sub-fandoms
Harry Potter is the best example to use when describing a flourishing online fandom. It has been almost twenty years when the books have first been published, leaving it with ample time to grow a fandom on all platforms, for blogs, fanfictions, analysis, edits, and so much more. Along with movies and a fantasical universe, its a perfect breeding ground for excited fangirls and intricate dynamics. Its such a large fandom that within it, there are unique fandoms of things within the fandom, with fanfictions of fanfictions, edits of edits. There are many things in the Harry Potter fandom that are simply fan made things, but have large renown, as much as the original like the Potter Puppet Pals, an ironic comedy series which lines are often paraphrased for fun.
A great example of this is the 500 thousand word monstrosity on Archive of our own called All The Young Dudes, a slow burn fanfic of the Marauders' time at school. This is such a big part of the Harry Potter fandom that it is a fandom of it's own, with many fanfictions of ATYD, Pinterest pages, text posts, headcanons, and ships set in the ATYD version of Harry Potter yet not following the ATYD version of canon. (For example, the slash ship between Regulus Black and James Potter) It's a big fandom, and one thing that attracted many others from the main Harry Potter fandom was a fanmade movie trailer for ATYD using existing clips of Hollywood movies, but pieced together making it completely believable to exist together in a universe, much moreso a movie. You wouldn't believe Andrew Garfield's Spider-Man has a place in the Harry Potter fandom aside from crossover fanfiction, but one look at that fanmade movie trailer on YouTube will have you absolutely convinced that our favorite web-slinger could also definitely be our furry little problem. There are edits upon edits of the Spider-Man movie on social media platforms such as Tik Tok that are coupled with the right music and excerpts from the ATYD fanfiction that really makes you ask, is there actually a movie of the Marauders? Even Andrew Garfield himself has confirmed his knowledge and love for being a fancasted young Remus Lupin, showing the reach of this niche community within another niche online community within a fandom. You know what they say, never underestimate young girls in love.
References
Another thing highly prevalent in fandoms are specific words that only fans of that specific book or movie series understand what it's referring to, leading it to a running gag joke or a communal nostalgic memory. You only have to type 'calmly' after any Harry Potter text post and there's sure to be many people with laughing emojis and agreements. If you're out of the loop, its a comparison between the book and the movie of the Goblet of Fire in that scene when Dumbledore confronts Harry after his name pops out of the goblet. In the books Dumbledore asks Harry if he put his name in calmly to show his collected demeanor, but in the movies, Dumbledore runs across the room, grabs Harry and nearly yells in his face, leading this to be a running gag in the fandom, usually in the comment section of text post, to demonstrate in an alternate reality that the person has yelled it instead. In truth, and to quote, running gags like these are simply for "shits and giggles", but they are part of an integral communal joy that links the fans and their internet presence together.
Another similar but not completely is the line "Bucky?" commented in almost any Captain America posts or anything related in the MCU, sometimes used to reminisce past times or old fan memory, but usually just to prompt another commenter to reply with "Who the hell is Bucky?", paraphrasing the quote from the second Captain America movie when Steve Rogers meets his old friend Bucky Barnes again seventy years in the future, but in a situation where they are at each other's throats, with Bucky having no recollection of the other. Unlike 'calmly', which can only be used in the Harry Potter fandom for prevalence and is used for laughs as a commentary, the line from Captain America bears enough unique references to be used in scenarios which fans want to comment on outside the Marvel fandom, and can also be used as a calling for a fellow fan's reply.
Ending
We come to the end of this not-so-brief introduction of the world of online fanatic domains. In truth, this essay barely scratches the surface of fandoms. It is not only a place where people talk about their favorite fictional world, but a congregation of people along with our all unique personalities, then all contributing to a communal love, giving birth to a unique language, culture, and reference for online fans to find other online fans in real life. We currently exist in a turbulent world, ever changing, with people around us undermining us at each and every turn, physical or virtual, trying to tear us down, but the existence of online fandoms and communities are a place to let you know, “Yes, your love of this is valid. No, it isn’t something to hide, come share it with us!” Fandoms have led to a birth of many aspiring writers, artists, coders, publicists, and so many more. Though many may dismiss fanatic domains as simply a bunch of “crazed 14 year old fangirls wasting their time” there’s so much more to it, and if you have a book or movie or you’re interested in, I highly recommend you search it up, find a few Tumblr blogs to follow, maybe take a dip in fanficitions, create a few headcanons of your own, and who knows, it might bring you somewhere unexpected, and even if it doesn’t, you’ll have a fun time, I promise.

here is what u can expect from this page:
i am going to post music reviews/recommendations most likely, as well as film & literature & all of that stuff. whenever i see a piece of media that interests me enough 2 want 2 talk abt it im gonna use this blog 2 share my thoughts !!!!
i also am really interested in philosophy, i am only just now formally getting into it, but i have been thinking about that sort of stuff and asking questions like that 4ever. erm. i wouldnt call myself a philosopher bc that feels pretentious but i aspire 2 be a philosopher eventually. ill probably post abt that sort of stuff as well. i am also VERY interested in sociology, psychology, anthropology, political science... pretty much anything like that. i just love learning about things in general EVERYTHING is so fascinating 2 me but especially humanity.
i am a bit interested in politics as well !!!! i dont like to use any labels 4 my political ideas bc i feel like those can be limiting & contribute 2 close-mindedness but if i had 2 describe my alignment in any way i am probably pretty far-left. although i am completely open 2 hearing everyone's ideas!
i might also post about other things as well, im not sure yet !!!
some info abt me:
i am a girl, so, she/her pronouns ig !
i am 16 years old (well im 15 but i turn 16 in two weeks)
i am a member of the LGBTQ community
my handle on most social media sites is yourdadcosplay if u want 2 follow me anywhere else !!! (i dont do cosplay or anything~ when i was 13 i heard some guy on tiktok say the phrase "your dad cosplay" and i thought that combination of words was super funny so i made it into my username on instagram and then it just kind of stuck. and i use that on everything now. only reason i didnt use it 4 my tumblr is bc i didnt want ppl 2 think my blog was a cosplay blog or something idk)
my favorite music artists r: Black Country New Road, Kimya Dawson, Death Grips, Xiu Xiu, and Car Seat Headrest !!!!
my favorite album of all time is Ants From Up There and my favorite movie of all time is Everything Everywhere All at Once, both of those pieces came out in the year 2022.
my favorite book is the manga Goodnight Punpun by Inio Asano, and its actually the book that made me fall in love with literature.
im currently working on creating my own website!!! i dont know anything about HTML though, so it will be a long process.
i dont believe in astrology rlly but i am a Gemini.
my iq is 122 or something around that i dont remember the number i just remember im in the 93rd percentile
i am an INFP
Tumblr media
boundaries:
i do try my absolute best to be open-minded and tolerant towards everyone's ideas and beliefs; even those which i disagree with. i actually encourage ppl who disagree with anything i say 2 challenge me or discuss/debate with me. that being said, if u r not willing 2 have a civil and open-minded discussion with me, and if ur only interest is arguing, then i will ask u 2 pls leave me alone. i love talking 2 ppl who have ideas different than my own, but i do not wish 2 engage in any immature internet beefs or anything of that sort.
pls, 4 the love of god, if u r the type of person who gets offended over every little thing; if u r more concerned with petty discourse & things that have no significance 2 any real-life problems; if u lack media literacy; or if u r otherwise just unintelligent, then PLEASE dont interact with my page.
i try my absolute best 2 be a good person. if i ever do anything that u find 2 be morally offensive (this is not just if i say something that makes u feel a bit of angst, but if i say something that u feel is actually problematic.) or if we r interacting directly & i make u uncomfortable, PLEASE TELL ME! i hate it when ppl have problems with me that could easily be resolved but they just dont tell me. it makes me anxious.
also, pls note:
just because i talk about a certain piece of media or art or literature on this blog does not necessarily mean that i agree with the ideas expressed in that blog or even that i like that piece. i try my best to think 4 myself and i do not take all of the ideas that r expressed 2 me as the absolute truth. just because i read any given book does not mean that i necessarily agree with its ideas; the same goes 4 all of the topics i discuss here.
as a large part of this blog is abt media discussion & whatnot, i want 2 say that i am absolutely open 2 any art. and i will not avoid any piece of media just because it is allegedly problematic.
most of this page is dedicated 2 sharing and discussing my ideas on various topics like art, philosophy, politics, and such. i dont think that im going 2 be posting or saying anything that is incredibly morally offensive or anything, and 2 be honest i dont even think my ideas r particularly radical or controversial, but, if there ever does come a time when i might have a potentially controversial idea, i wont hesitate 2 share it. im not going 2 censor myself or sugarcoat my beliefs on this blog just 2 avoid discourse.
all of that being said, this blog is not 2 be taken 100% seriously either. i will talk abt serious topics on here, but i like 2 laugh as well! u should not assume that anything i say is 100% serious or 100% satirical. that SHOULD be a given, but on my Instagram account, i have had a worrying amount of interactions with ppl who got mad at me 4 things bc they assumed i was serious when i wasnt or vice versa.
ok, that is all !!! thx 4 reading !!!

Artist Highlights #4 - Abbey
Abbey (@ekaterinaroskova) is an artist and writer, and they're also this zine's co-editor! They have worked on the layout editing of both our first issues, as well as helped out in organizing.
For Edition #1, they drew the comic "Exoskeletons for Children," and they also wrote "Cretan Metaphors: An Analysis," which you can read in pages 16 to 18 of our first issue.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For Edition #2, they wrote "Interview #42," which can be found in pages 25 to 27 of our first issue.
What type of art do you usually make? What medium, or what type of writing?
I like making outsider-perspective epistolary works; this is a fancy way of saying I tend to write in-universe perspectives on the events of any given story, if I'm creating fan content. It's what I did for Issue 2 and what I'm planning for Issue 3. I also really like to make comics, even if that's more of a side-hobby.
Who's your favorite Mabel character to draw/write about? What are your favorite motifs and recurrent imagery in the podcast?
Character's tough, but probably a tie between Thomas, Lolo, and Jonathan. Thomas is ridiculously important to me, Lolo's just fascinating, and Jonathan's fun to turn into a tragedy. My favorite motif is the loops/ouroboros motif (Thomas fan
What have you liked about working on the zine?
I love everything about this zine!! I love getting to work under the incredible Andy (who is just fantastic at leading such a big project), I love getting to collaborate with my friends, I love getting to help with design work. All of it is fantastic.
What do you like about the zine as a reader?
I adore the variety in the works showcased. It's not something I've seen done before for a fanzine-- very fitting for Mabel's weirdness.
Finally, wanna share a Mabel hot take or theory?
JONATHAN MILLS DID "TO OPEN DOORS" DO NOT ATTEMPT TO CONVINCE ME OTHERWISE.
You can find Abbey's blog here.
Remember we're open to join until tomorrow!

CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT CHALLENGE 1: BATTERY OF TESTS
Enneagram Type 4 - The Individualist
Fours build their identities around their perception of themselves as being somehow different or unique; they are thus self-consciously individualistic. They tend to see their difference from others as being both a gift and a curse – a gift, because it sets them apart from those they perceive as being somehow “common,” and a curse, as it so often seems to separate them from the simpler forms of happiness that others so readily seem to enjoy.
Personality DNA - Reserved Builder
I am Reserved because I’m not someone who always needs to have others around, and I find I can handle most situations on my own. I am Builder because I am detail-oriented, cautious, and practical.
Moral Alignment - True Neutral
A neutral character does what seems to be a good idea. She doesn’t feel strongly one way or the other when it comes to good vs evil or law vs chaos. Most neutral characters exhibit a lack of conviction exhibit a lack of conviction or bias rather than a commitment to neutrality.
16 Personalities - Architect (INTJ)
It can be lonely at the top. As one of the rarest personality types – and one of the most capable – Architects (INTJs) know this all too well. Rational and quick-witted, Architects pride themselves on their ability to think for themselves, not to mention their uncanny knack for seeing right through phoniness and hypocrisy. But because their minds are never at rest, Architects may struggle to find people who can keep up with their nonstop analysis of everything around them.
Sorting Hat Chats - Gryffindor Primary / Ravenclaw Secondary
Gryffindor Primaries trust their moral intuitions and have a need and a drive to live by them. They feel what’s right in their gut, and that matters and guides them. If they don’t listen to and act on that, it feels immoral.
Ravenclaw secondaries are collectors. Dedicated to knowledge, to facts, systems, tools, or skills, the things they have already learned are what they call on when things get tough. They can collect useful skills, build complex clever systems, invent vitally useful things, or just learn everything there is to know about the large cats of South America.
Four Temperaments - Melancholic
The melancholic temperament is fundamentally introverted and is given to thought. Melancholic people often are perceived as very (or overly) pondering and are both considerate and very cautious. They are organized and schedule oriented, often planning extensively. Melancholics can be highly creative in activities such as poetry, art, and invention- and are sensitive to others.
DISC - S Style
The S Personality Type in the DISC model, developed by Dr. William Marston, is known for being steady, stable, and predictable. They are even-tempered, friendly, sympathetic with others, and very generous with loved ones. The S is understanding and listens well. Preferring close, personal relationships, the S is very opened with loved ones but can also be possessive at times and hold them close.
