I’ve been listening to the Horizon soundtrack again and man, the two different versions of In the Flood kill me. Specifically, having the main version be Aloy’s anxieties about not living up to Elizabet’s example and expectations, but Lovisa’s version be Beta’s view of Aloy and feeling she isn’t living up to Aloy’s example and expectations, is so fucking compelling. It says so much about them as people, and it also is really the first time we get a direct viewpoint of Aloy from a different first person POV, and how much she is to Beta as Elizabet is to her.
So I’m gonna talk about their songs.
Aloy's version of the song is straightforward.
"Am I the one to hold // this crown of ash and salt? // Their kindness calls to me. I have to block it out." All through Zero Dawn, she was seeking belonging and identity, but she can't afford to seek kindness now. She is the heir to Elizabet's legacy, the legacy that is falling apart in her hands. She has to ignore it, she has to be more than human.
"My voice has grown so somber // these words don't seem like mine // but the iron won't subside // no matter what I try." Aloy feels she is losing herself - there is nothing but the mission. She feels like she is getting nowhere and it is shredding her psyche.
"Am I raindrops in the flood? [...]If I falter, if I fall // the wave inside my soul // carries all I know // Who can take my hand in the flood?" She can't tell if she's making any difference, but the world is on her shoulders. She can't see how anyone can help her. She is on her own - and if she fails, everyone on Earth dies. The pressure is crushing her, but she has to stand strong anyway. 
"A voice calls me forth // through darkness unknown // my heart with silence burns through solemnness and bone // the edge beyond the shore // this weight of wood and rot // I long to reach the other // to find the path we lost." I think it's significant that the only voice Aloy is hearing at this point in the game (the opening credits) is her own voice - the same voice as Elizabet's. She is letting herself be subsumed into the identity of Elizabet, and it is crushing her ability to see anything in the world but the death and darkness. 
The refrain repeats here, except that the lyrics change from "If I falter, if I fall" to "If I'm broken, if I'm torn-" Aloy is faltering, she can't carry this alone, she’s tearing herself apart, but she can't afford to break. She is desperate for someone to take her hand, but can't imagine who could possibly bear the burden that feels like hers alone.
All very straightforward - terrible, anxious, crushing, but straightforward. She is worried about her mission, and she has the weight of the world on her shoulders. She is barely thinking of herself as an individual anymore. This song is a desperate cry for help, from someone who doesn't believe help is coming for her. She feels like she is alone, and always has been.
But Beta. Beta has a very different, much more complicated theme to her version of the song.
"My hands are full of flowers // my ears are full of songs." Right off the bat, we get such a loaded, complicated line. For the first time in her life, Beta is seeing life. The base is as sterile as the Odyssey was, but Zo has filled it with plants and music, specifically for the reason that the sterility felt unnatural to her. Beta flees these things into the barren server room, but they are still there, all around where she’s hidden herself. At the same time, I think this line foreshadows Varl's death - the flowers and songs of a gravesinger, the loss of the first person to treat her like a human being and not a machine.
"My heart has had enough // I'd rather just be wrong. I listen when you talk // your words all make sense // but underneath it all // I hear where we are going with this." Where Aloy's version is just crying out into the silence, Beta's is addressing someone specific, someone capable of speaking to her. This feels so clearly about Aloy's frustrations with her - how many times did Aloy come try to cajole her into being brave, like Aloy? She's tired of it. She's used to being told she's stupid and wrong anyway. She'd rather Aloy just be mad, because;
"I am raindrops in the flood // I am emptiness." Beta does not feel significant. She is certain she's as useless as raindrops in a flood; there is no question as in Aloy's version. She is a tool. She has always been a tool. And yet...
"I am hope. I am lonely in a crowd // but when you hear me // you'll be near me// stay with me in the flood." Even though Beta still thinks of herself as helpless, Aloy inspires her to feel differently. She is so conflicted about it. She's emptiness, but she is hope, too - she is Elizabet's legacy, too. But more importantly, when Aloy is near her, hears her, then maybe...
"In dreams I never left // I  had courage like the beast // My eyes they never fled // my arms would always reach." These are some of the clearest lines to illustrate this is Beta speaking, and not Aloy. She dreams of having courage, but implies that the idea of being able to keep her eyes high and forward is just a dream. She knows she is timid and scared, as a person. Her feelings of weakness continue here.
"You've hardened with your words // maybe fear is armor too // my voice is not that strong // when hurricanes come running from you." Aloy scares her. Aloy is so different from her - Beta's voice is weak and trembling, Aloy's so fierce even hurricanes flee her - but something about that inspires Beta, too. Beta feels stronger by exposure to Aloy, even though Aloy kind of scares her. And she looks up to Aloy, despite her fear;
“The little child inside // is jealous of your strength // The way you hold your head // When everything's aflame-" This is another clue this is Beta speaking - Aloy does not speak of Elizabet in the present tense. She is always asking what Elizabet would have done. Beta is seeing what Aloy does do, right now - she holds her head up even in the most dire of circumstances. Beta cannot see Aloy's fear and desperation, that Aloy only expresses within her own head in her own version of this song.
"Your back is straight as you walk away // Straighter than an oak in a storm // Only I remain // Should I have bent, been reshaped in your image? // Is that what you want?" Beta can only see how Aloy is different from her - strong, fierce, aggressive, yelling at her to be stronger. To be more courageous. To be more like Aloy thinks she should be - Aloy pushing her own feelings of trying and failing to be like Elizabet onto Beta. But Beta can't see that Aloy is angry at herself; she can only see the ways she's inadequate, the ways Aloy gets frustrated and walks away from her. Of course she wonders if Aloy just wants Beta to be another her.
And yet, the refrain repeats here, three times as opposed to Aloy's two. No matter how much she feels Aloy doesn't want her the way she is...she is inspired anyway. She wants Aloy to hear her, stay by her. Because when Aloy is there...maybe Beta can stand up through the flood.
Beta is the one who can take Aloy’s hand. Aloy does not have to be alone - and as much as she is falling apart inside from the pressure, none of that is obvious to Beta. Beta can only see her as the same inspiring figure Aloy imagines Elizabet to be - but unlike Elizabet, Aloy is here, real and alive, someone who can actually have feelings about Beta, be proud of and love Beta. Aloy is to Beta what Aloy has always needed from Elizabet - and Beta helps Aloy realize that what matters is not what Elizabet would have thought of her, but what Rost did think of her. Beta looks at Aloy and sees the person Rost made her, and is inspired by her. She can live in the here and now, and they can stay with each other, and endure the flood together.

Can you do an analysis of the Calling lyrics and how they link with Gwen's POV?
Sure! First of all: This song is the second credit song from Across the Spider-Verse. Chronologically it's the last song being played in Across the Spider-Verse. Calling is a confession, apology and a promise from Gwen to Miles. It only makes sense from Gwen's POV and ONLY after the events of the movie. (That's why it's the last song we hear)
♫ Just to save you, I'd give all of me (All of me, yeah) ♫ ♫ I can hear you screamin' out, callin' me (Callin' me) ♫ ♫ It's my fault, made you fall for me (Fall) ♫ ♫ So, to save you, I'd give my all (My all) ♫
This is basically Gwen saying that she would give everything she has in order to save Miles. Miles, as we know, is trapped in the wrong universe after the events of Across the Spider-Verse. Gwen builds a team to go and save him. She also says she can hear Miles calling. This is just metaphorically though. It basically means Gwen knows that Miles is dependent on her help. This part also shows that Gwen blames herself for what happened and that she is aware that Miles did indeed fall in love with her. That's the reason why she will risk it all to save him.

This is the interesting part. It starts of with Gwen, again, acknowledging that Miles fell in love with her. It also shows that Gwen counts on Miles when times are tough. We can see that in the movie. Miles is her beacon of light. When she is struggling or feeling sad she looks at the picture of her and Miles. A memory that always brightens her mood. Gwen says it hurts her when Miles starts to see her flaws. This one is self explainatory. Gwen has flaws and they are on full display in Across the Spider-Verse. Some of these flaws are the reason why Miles gets hurt. But Gwen again reiterates that she will risk everything to save Miles. It's her number one priority. She then says she is short on time but that for Miles she'd never have enough, meaning that no amount of time she spents with Miles would feel enough. She wants to spend ALL her time with Miles. Then she says that she didn't plan on falling in love with Miles when she first met him, but she did anyway. This is the confession part of the song. Gwen confesses that she fell in love with Miles. The next two lines basically say that Gwen can't bear to see Miles sad and that she'll always be there to cheer him up. It also says that she trusts him BLINDLY. We then get the part where she talks about the fact that she lied to him. She acknowledges that but again reiterates that nothing can and will stop her from getting to him. We can see that in the movie when she goes to see Miles despite being forbidden to and despite the fact it would endanger the multiverse. This can also be connected to her current mission. Nothing will stop her from reaching and saving Miles. The last two lines are Gwen, again, stating that she has feelings for Miles and that she will do everything to save him. The rest of the song is kind of irrelevant. This is the main part that's from Gwen's POV. It's my favorite song from the soundtrack and I love how it fits PERFECTLY with what happens in the movie.

I’m not big into musicals and although The Phantom of the Opera is probably the most well known one, I have never fully indulged myself in it. What are some of your favorites moments from the musical and what about it changed your life?
(I figured I might as well learn about it and you seem like an amazing teacher!)

So, I was pretty young when I first listened to the soundtrack (only 8), and digging way deep, I’ll say that the drama of the music itself really got to me—the big orchestrations and amazing voices had me instantly hooked. Also, I was so fascinated that almost the entire musical was sung and that made it incredibly interesting to listen to because I could pretty much figure out the whole story just from the lyrics. I had been exposed to musicals prior to this, mainly Disney ones and good ole Rogers and Hammerstein ones, but this was so different. It was dark and scary (murder! crazy genius madman! problematic love story!). It was dramatic af. And it pulled at my heartstrings in a way nothing had ever done before. And I know Phantom isn’t for everyone because the opera-esque style of singing is not everyone’s cup of tea (and honestly, I am not really a classical opera fan either LOL), but I loved it cuz I’d never heard people do such amazing things with their voices before.
I saw it live for the first time just after my 11th birthday (and 12 -13 times since in various places, not counting filmed productions), and I will say I was on the edge of my seat the entire time. There is so much to look at and take in and somehow I always find something new each time I see it. It's a complete spectacle in the best way possible, honestly. It was everything amazing about theater that I longed to be a part of.
It changed my life because I wanted to be Christine Daae (lol). The more I listened, the more I wanted to sing like her and that led me to the fact that this was a musical and people could actually be in this production. So I learned as much as I could about the production and I tried to mold my little voice to be like Christine’s. And moreover, it inspired me to seek out more musicals in a similar vein, which opened an entire new world to me (hey, there Les Miserables and Evita and all the dramatic 70s/80s/90s musicals lol). Basically, Phantom turned me fully into a theater kid. I was already a dancer, and even though I was relatively shy, I thought that maybe, just maybe this was something I could do. And it set me on the path to do so! Lord knows without Phantom I may have ended up a STEM kid, but lol no. Luckily, my parents were SUPER supportive of this new passion and I owe so much to them for all the lessons and theater tickets and performances they had to sit through and for torturing them with the same thing over and over again LOL. Thanks, Mom and Dad! Anyway, I was the ultimate theater/choir kid in high school, and eventually got my Bachelor’s Degree in Theater as well.
Soooo, favorite moments! (There are many—I could go through the whole show but I’ll try to cut it down lol). 
The Overture (see links below). Seriously incredible music, sets the tone for the show, but when you see the stage production and see how the entire set transforms like magic and that chandelier rises above the audience, my god, it’s incredible. The organ kicks in and the floor vibrates and it's this (brilliant) sensory overload that will make you feel every emotion and sensation. It's magnificent, truly. And this was a HUGE deal in theater in the 80s cuz no one had done anything like it before. And let me tell you, there is nothing like watching that chandelier rise (and fall, later) right over your head! Every time I hear it to this day, I get goosebumps, but if I’m watching it, I will cry. That’s how moving it is. Here's some bootlegs of the stage production (which don't quite do it justice, but it'll have to do! WARNING: Flashing lights) Great quality BL (begins around 3:20 but the Prologue is a good watch!). Another one from Broadway (different angle)
The title song (The Phantom of the Opera) number is crazy. I’m not sure what they were thinking putting synth, an organ, strings, and electric guitars together, but somehow it works (the 80s were WILD lol). Throw in a stunning soprano cadenza at the end and it makes it both incredibly surreal and interesting. And the staging is fantastic. There’s a moving catwalk with body doubles. There’s a boat on a dry ice lake with candles rising out of nowhere. It’s just awesome. The costuming is iconic, too. 
The Music of the Night is beautiful. And it takes a major vocal and acting talent to traverse it well. I won’t get too technical vocally, but when done well, this song is so seductive and impactful. It’s a love song about music, about Christine, and it’s innocent and sexual all at once (when done well).
Masquerade (at the top of Act II) is a fabulous ensemble number and the costuming is amazing. Iconic number overall.
Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again is my favorite song of the show (if I have to pick). For anyone who’s experienced loss (esp. that of a parent), the lyrics will hit you right in the heart. But I love listening to (and singing) this one so much. 
The Point of No Return is the most underrated number in the show, imo and one of my faves. It is sexy. as. hell. and a bit unexpected, really ramping up the passion btw the Phantom and Christine under the guise of this opera that the Phantom has written and is forcing everyone to perform. A good performance has a lot of nuance and will get you a little hot under the collar. 😏 I honestly don’t feel like I can explain it well enough, but a good watch/listen/reading the lyrics will get you there. 
The Final Lair is the insane climax and it’s a bit of a roller coaster but I love it. You’ll go from hating the Phantom to weeping over him in the span of the scene. 
The staging, sets, costuming, and makeup overall (of the original production). Like I mentioned above, a lot of what they did in Phantom was new tech for the late 80’s and to this day has a pretty stellar effect on stage. The chandelier rising and falling throughout the show is just super cool. The (4 hour) makeup for the Phantom was pretty cutting edge back in the day and has a wonderful effect on stage when done well. 
I highly recommend watching the 25th Anniversary at Royal Albert Hall from 2013 if you can’t see it live. The quality is amazing, the talent is fantastic, and while the staging isn’t quite the original because of the size of the venue, it gives you a pretty good idea of the vibe. If you don’t want to watch the whole thing at first, there are plenty of clips on YouTube of the major numbers via The Shows Must Go On (linked above). (If you are just watching clips, you may want to read a synopsis of the show as a whole so it makes sense what’s going on.) The 2004 film starring Gerald Butler and Emmy Rossum is actually pretty decent from a cinematic perspective (though I have some major qualms about GB's vocal performance) but if it's all you have, its a pretty good representation of the story. And listen, with 35 years of material, there are so many cast recordings and bootlegs, you're bound to find a combo of actors that you like! (I won't dive into that here though, cuz that's a whole other can of worms...)

you don’t share the same major so when he learns about one of your assignments through a damn near masterpiece you’re creating he gets curious and is like “hold up… my partner’s an actual artist and they didn’t tell me?!?”
he knows you’re not very proud or loud of your work so he starts asking about your major but very gradually since he realizes he feels guilty for not having known enough before
soobin doesn’t want to make anything very sudden when it comes to showing u support and praise but u bet he’s always there when it comes to having ur art up at exhibits or at conventions to sell ur stuff, but gradually he brings you bouquets of flowers that get bigger and bigger and at some point u use up the flowers he gives u to make a display to show him the love he gives you but in a visual that makes him straight up BAWL but anyway
you always end ur explanations with “yeah but it’s nothing exciting” even to this day when he catches you in the middle of doing an assignment or anything on your ipad or on a canvas or in your sketch book
he never pries but he admires you so so so much he feels like he could explode 
when the conversation or time of day doesn’t revolve around school or work soobin never fails to quietly but tenderly let you know that while you may doubt your own work for its value he adores every single thing your mind and hands create and that your passion is so beautiful and he loves you
walks away casually or dozes off on your shoulder every single time like he didn’t drop such a confession
he loves water colors and painting and asks if you could teach him any skills which you do
your passion and skills have brought the two of you closer even if you’re from different worlds (majors) and soobin feels so lucky to have you in his life

makes a big deal about you and your passion and skills (but in his own “tamed” way since he used to be even more louder about his praise for you but he had to tone it down since you just get so shy) 
yeonjun makes it a point to kiss your hands and fingers, stretching them while your fingers are intertwined, he’ll massage them so casually while you’re having a conversation with each other or with the others
you’ve only mentioned your hands being sore ONCE but it seems he’s never forgotten
acts like you’re pregnant with the way he doesn’t let you use your fingers or hands too much when he’s around
“they’re too valuable, they should only be used for your masterpieces, can’t you see the infinite value you have?!” 
he gives you a kiss on the cheek and reminds you you’re doing a great job as much as he can because you’re your worst critic
if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the grading or how it looks like to you, he knows the tell tale signs and knows words won’t fix everything so he holds you very tight, rubbing ur tired shoulders, letting u cry to him, and even if it won’t do anything he’ll still try his best to whisper sweet reassurances and encouragements and tells u what he sees and his voice alone soothes u :( 
tells you that he wants to get a tattoo of one of your sketches or doodles and you’re like NO WTF and he doesn’t see why he wouldn’t or shouldn’t and ur like pls seriously ur going to regret it and hes like ugh fine and kisses you and just when you think he forgets about it…
one day you find one of your silly little doodles on his wrist and a smirk on his face……

supports you like crazy, is so proud of you, he thinks so highly of your own major like you brought meaning to it
in his head he’s always like “god i wonder what my y/n must be up to, such a hard worker” in his internal monologues 
talks about you all the time when you’re not around, or to his friends, like everything reminds him of youuuuuu
you can see it in his eyes that he adores you and your passion and all the art you produce
but when he’s with you… you know half the time you’re going to get teased, every now and then joking about he has to turn in his simple coding and you have to turn in something that levels monet or renoir or vermeer 
or he’ll flip the roles and start joking about how you have to turn in a van gogh painting before a night out and he just finds it so funny (he knows what you do and that his jokes are so inaccurate but you let him have his fun)
“can you paint my face and make it look like i got in a bad fight but make it look like i won the fight”
he tells you he wants you to draw him or paint him and you’re shy about it because you’re worried you’ll make him look bad but he tells you he wishes to see how you see him and it could never be anything but beautiful 
beomgyu screams with joy and shows it the painting off to literally EVERYONE even to his family and if it makes you shy he REVELS IN IT — he enjoys making u flustered but besides all the pomp and frills, he kisses ur hands and quietly tells u how he feels about you and he’s got some strong feelings….
despite all the jokes, beomgyu always wants to show you his full support and love he feels for you because of how you show him your own

“within reason” he is very very very proud of you and every single thing you do and create and when he says within reason he means he supports you a very normal amount (ironically bc he could literally talk about you and everything you do for DAYS straight)
you work tirelessly out of your ipad making art not only for your classes but for your commissions and art that you sell and of course taehyun is ALL over it
he appoints himself as ur manager, looking for platforms to place ur art on so more people can see it
he even wants to buy a cricut to put ur art on clothes and as stickers etc but one thing at a time, tyun, one thing at a time… 
he tried to even call local museums and universities that hold exhibits of art but ur like “babe pls :(“ and he lets up, deep apology with “i just want everyone to see u the way i see u and ur art” <3……
taehyun likes to watch you paint or draw and if you get shy from being watched, he’ll apologize for being so blatant about it and go back to his own readings and homework only to steal glances from afar (he is head over heels for you)
he brings his books and laptop to ur studio (after making sure he knows that u want him there with u) — brings u ur favorite food and drinks and dessert every time he comes over bc he knows u deserve it
taehyun learns ur body language so he knows when ur getting frustrated or when ur about to finish and he always opens his arms bc thats what you search for once u lift ur tired eyes from ur canvas or iPad
he plays with ur fingers and kisses ur head and tells you you’re doing so well and he apologizes bc his opinion may not be important since he isn’t ur professor or one of the greats but u reassure him that his opinion is just as important and that ur eternally grateful to have him in ur life and
he gets teary eyed and kisses you and tells you the same — he’ll never stop supporting you

like soob, hyuka loves animation 
kai is a very soft person :( so when he notices you get stressed about a certain brush or detail or anything, he wants to fix it for you
he likes to take your mind off things by incorporating what you love to do (painting) with a much more relaxed environment 
that can go with distraction of snacks and sour candies and cuddles and cartoons or when you paint his face and he paints yours and its so unserious too
one time he brought one of his shirts to ur studio and ur like: ? and he shyly explains that he wants u to wear it to paint aka get it messy so he can always have a piece of u in this way.,f.,.emgkmrmbkmbm
he’ll let you play with his switch that’s covered with stickers of your art btw
you and kai will take turns using the coloring book for stress relief that’s on your ipad, whenever you do it, kai has his head perched on your shoulder and when you watch him do it, your cheek is on his bicep and sometimes he’ll choose to do a long one so you can nap off the stress
gives u a quick kiss but sometimes he presses too hard and it jolts u up and knocks u awake which startles him and his cheekies get red 
“what are we drawing today” he asks with his head on ur shoulder and you turn to give him a kissie 
“you, actually” you tease just to get a rise out of him but in actuality, you decide to abandon your project and draw him and he’s very hesitant about it but he still lets u, he’s just red
bc of his shyness, you vouch for a rough doodle with exaggerated hearts and cartoonish vibes that make him exhale when he sees it — he can’t help but smile very hard and there’s tears in his eyes 
he just hugs you when you give it to him and you will find that picture hung up in his room next time u go in there :’)

I didn't hate The Fall Guy, I absolutely loved it!
There's nothing that makes me want to make movies more than watching movies about making movies.
Inside me there are two wolves. One loves watching serious, "important" ✨️cinema✨️, and the other one loves watching fun, over the top action movies. Because both of them are cinema, matter what anyone says. Movies are a way to escape. To have some fun when you aren't feeling too great. To have a laugh when you've been crying too much. To have a cry when you've been holding it in too long. To get angry in a way that inspires you to make a change. To get scared enough to feel something when you think you've gone numb.
If Nicole Kidman needs a new AMC commercial, tell her to call me.
Anyway, if you love movies, if you love action, if you love stunts, The Fall Guy is for you. If you love Dune (in a fun way, not a crazy zealot way) you'll love The Fall Guy.
I loved almost everything, if not everything about this movie. I thought the story was a lot of fun, the soundtrack was great, the cinematography was cool, the pacing was consistent, and of course the action, vfx and stunts were awesome!
The performances struck a balance of earnestness and tongue-in-cheek that reminds me of the self-awareness of Barbie or The LEGO Movie. Ryan Gosling is definitely still feeling the Kenergy, and it's nice to see Ken doing well on his own without Barbie. Actually, scratch that, he found a different Barbie in Emily Blunt, who made me wish I was on a film set right now so I could fall in love with a camera operator. I haven't directed a movie (yet), but I could feel her nerves as a first-time director, but her growing confidence also came across beautifully. Aaron Taylor-Johnson as Tom Cruise–sorry, Tom Ryder–made me remember that I love to watch good actors act like bad actors. I feel like Hannah Waddingham can't give a bad performance, 10/10, no notes. I wish Winston Duke had more screentime, but what he had, he absolutely owned. The only other thing I've seen him in was Us, which was fantastic, but I definitely want to see more.
But of course, my standout performance has to be my girl Stephanie Hsu!! It's criminal how little I saw her in the marketing of The Fall Guy, it's almost like she's just a Jobu Tupaki cameo, but she absolutely crushed her scenes. I mean, they gave her a great action scene, thank you EEAAO for showing the world what Stephanie can do.
Slight spoilers in this next paragraph. The Fall Guy isn't overly emotional, but there was one part that got me moist in the eyes. It wasn't the love story, okay it was part of that, or the message about always getting back up, or that nihilism is a viable worldview (I learned that from EEAAO, nothing matters 😁), it was the line that Ryan Gosling says to Emily Blunt's character Jody, about how she has to finish her movie because she might end up inspiring the next generation of Jodys. As soon as he said that, just a wave of emotion. Because that's how movies keep going, because filmmakers inspire filmmakers who inspire filmmakers. It's so simple, yet it is so profound and beautiful. And the fact that a movie has the power to inspire a young woman to make a crazy fun Mad Max/Dune love story with Jason Momoa is so stupidly powerful. But this movie also has the power to inspire the next generation of stunt performers, directors, writers, producers, and all that is just amazing.
If you've read this far, it looks like you're just as crazy as me, the guy who will sit in the front row of as many IMAX viewings of as many movies as he can, because he just loves movies. And like I said, nothing makes me want to make movies more than watching movies about making movies.

I watched All the Light We Cannot See and I am still not over it. I LOVE it so much.
(Minor spoilers ahead!)
Might be controversial to some but I actually did love the Netflix adaptation of All the Light We Cannot See despite the noticeable changes done in the show. Usually I'm like "the book is better than the movie/show" but in this case I feel like I loved the show more than the book.
Don't get me wrong, the book is a gem, beautifully-written and inarguably one of the greatest pieces of literature ever made about WWII. There is a reason why it won a Pulitzer Prize, after all. And besides, the adaptation would not exist if the book was not written in the first place.
However, there is something about the show that was really striking to me. It peaked my interest and it moved me. I could not express it enough just how much I loved it. It is a four part mini-series but it felt like I was watching a long 4-hour movie because I finished it in one sitting. It was that good for me. It was also beautifully done--- the cinematography, the soundtrack, the atmosphere, and the acting, especially the acting of Aria Mia Loberti and Louis Hofmann who play the characters of Marie-Laure and Werner respectively. They managed to capture the essence of their characters really well that I couldn't really see any other actor portraying Marie-Laure and Werner better than them.
Hofmann is a perfect fit for the role, he is how I envision Werner and it is a dream come true to see Werner come alive on-screen through him. I really loved how he showed the inner turmoil and struggle that Werner felt about the war. Like he didn't want to be a part of it but he's pulled into it anyway since he didn't have much of a choice. I also really loved the expression in his eyes. There are scenes where he didn't have to speak a lot about how he felt because his eyes expressed everything.

Look at the emotions in his eyes! Such incredible acting from Hofmann.
Loberti also did an amazing job at portraying Marie-Laure and she did so very well that I was impressed that she actually did not have any acting experience prior to ATLWCS. Her being legally blind and actually having read the book made her portrayal of Marie-Laure very genuine and natural. I also liked her relationships between her father Daniel and her uncle Etienne because it looked very natural and convincing, as if they were just family.

What I also really loved in the show was the clear chemistry between Marie-Laure and Werner. I think a part of the reason why I loved it is because I am somewhat of a hopeless romantic, but even if I wasn't, it was evident that they had a connection. Their scenes together were short but I liked the bond that they shared. And honestly the show had more scenes of them together being closer than in the book.
I especially loved the scene after the shooting, where both of them ate peaches and then went up the attic to dance and eventually share a kiss. The kiss was short and sweet, but it still never failed to make me feel giddy and I actually had butterflies in my stomach with how innocent yet intimate it is. I think it was very beautiful and perfect.

Until now while I'm writing this I am still gushing about that part.
And as everyone may know, the Netflix adaptation changed the ending of what was supposed to be the ending that is in the book. While there are some people who were disappointed with the change, I honestly think that the change they did in the show was good. I happened to like it more, since instead of making me sob over a tragic and heartbreaking ending (Werner's death ), it actually portrayed a much happier ending (or at least, a happy for now ending). It also shows a promise of hope, which I think gives meaning to the name "All the Light We Cannot See"; that darkness could not last forever and light is what will always prevail. It's actually refreshing to see the show has a happy ending because I was expecting to cry an ocean, and it's a nice change to see because usually war movies end tragically. It's a good move that Shawn Levy decided to change it, and Doerr actually agreed with the ending change so it's not like the author did not consent to it. God knows that with how much bad things the world has going on with the wars and terrorism, I feel like we could use a bit of hope in our chaos-filled world.
And though I loved the show, I do admit that there were some things that I wish they could have done. I was disappointed that they did not include scenes with Frederick because he was very important on Werner's character development. I also wish that they could have used some French and German words/sentences because it was, after all, a story set in France during WW2 when the Nazis came into power. Maybe the actors could have improved more on the French accent at least, but then it was not really something I take so seriously. Lastly, I feel like it was a bit rushed. They could have prolonged it and added a few more chapters to really integrate the overall storyline well. I still did like it though and the ending of the show was very clear and good enough for me.
But overall, I think Netflix's ATLWCS is a really beautiful and well-made adaptation. I am still hung up on the show that I keep rewatching it. I've been also finding fanfictions to read to quench my need for more Marie-Laure and Werner content. So if you happen to be good at writing, please please please write about this so I could devour it. I love these two so much.

FEELINGS AND EMOTIONS aka: the most cinematic rinharu melody of all S1 of Free!
If you've seen any of my other posts throwing up about how much I love the Free! soundtrack, You will know that, especially it is the music of the first season that excites me more than anything (cofcofEVERBLUEcofcofcof) sooo, yeah, here i go again with another wanna-be-analysis which probably doesn't make much sense...
"Feelings and emotions" is the piece that plays during a sequence of scenes from chapter 12 of the first season of Free!.
But ohhoho, it's not just a sequence of scenes, it's THE SEQUENCE, the one that goes from the search for Rin by the entire Iwatobi team to the iconic scene of the cherry tree "it's my turn to show you a sight you've never seen before"
More or less from minute 9:51 to minute 13:20
It's interesting how many feelings can be expressed in just 3:41 of music and how its continuity makes visualizing the scene something so palpable and cinematic (oh well, at least that's how it feels to me)
So here it goes:
The first 39 seconds of song starts with a frenzy, a hectic music and tense chase, the whole team tries looks for Rin (unsuccessfully)

The melody calms down, but the tension remains at the peak of the moment when Haru finds Rin at 0:44 tense and cautious violin notes are heard, at the moment when Rin notices Haruka's presence.

And as soon as they start talking the tension changes tone to become a piano with a uncertainty, a little more sadder and defensive, and in the moment Rin tells Haru to laugh (and there is a small silence) the note rises in tone a little bit (01:16) and is modified for Haruka's answer (01:22) it becomes a bit sweeter and perhaps with a slight touch of despair at the moment when Haruka says that he remembered how fun it is to swim with friends

but just at the next moment,when Haruka says that its Rin who taught him all that and he finally found the answer the piano note drops like the last drop in a glass of water and releases all the violence of the tense violins of before exactly at the moments when the little tussle between the two begins

This sequence continues as they both roll across the floor, increasing in intensity each time, until reaching the point where an electrical rip is heard just as Rin notices the inscription on the ground...

where everything calms down suddenly (2:07) and about 02:12 a slight lietmotiv of "Words That Changed My Life" begins to sound while we see the tree

And as the melody begins to transform into "Word That Changed My Life" itself, there is a specific moment when the note becomes lower to sync with the first tear that Rin sheds on Haru's face (02:19)

Just finished my rewatch of jatp. My perfrct track record of not crying during Unsaid Emily remains untouched. I will say though, I was very close to shedding a tear this time. However, I didn’t even cry during Stand Tall! I always cry during Stand Tall!
Anyways, I couldn’t stop thinking about all the headcanons and theories that us tumblr fantoms created and the little easter eggs we discovered while watching and rewatching the series. It makes me really appreciative of the fact that we had a sense of community during a time where a lot of us were alone, scared, and uninspired. Just like Julie, I felt a renewed sense of purpose and hope. I think that a lot of people felt the same after watching the show. Julie and the Phantoms is what inspired me to learn the piano, the ukulele, and it led me to getting a guitar. When I learned how to play the chords for the soundtrack, I was playing those songs nonstop. It really helped me brave through the unsure feelings that came along with the pandemic. It made me forget my fears about the future.
I don’t feel as hopeful about things as I did back then, but JATP will always be a land-marking point in my life. It represents newfound joy, reignited passion, and abundant vivacity. As someone who loves and is extremely passionate about music, this silly little netflix show really hit me in the most sensitive places. And while I remember having a bout of serious depression after finishing the series, (along with intense rage that while I was dealing with my depression at its lowest point, the cast of jatp was living what felt like my dream) the lessons I learned from the show were far more significant. It literally brought music back into my life, no joke.
The friends I made because of JATP will always have a special place in my heart. A lot of them don’t use tumblr anymore, and I don’t use it nearly as much as I used to, but I’m still so grateful to have been introduced to such kind, accepting, and funny people. The stories, theories, headcanons, fanfictions, moodboards, inside jokes, memes, and fanart we created will always be remembered and cherished. I’m still pro-cheesecake, I’m still highly allergic to sleeves, and every time I see an unnecessary or fake zipper, I think of my fellow tumblr fantoms.
I don’t think I’ll ever truly “get over” Julie and the Phantoms. It was the first thing that truly resonated with my spirit as a new adult. I was 19 and had dropped out of college, feeling completely lost and like I had nothing going for me. Going into lockdown because of the pandemic didn’t help with any of that, and I was aimlessly, endlessly scrolling on social media, hoping to find meaning and purpose. And one day, my friend posted a clip on snapchat of what she was watching on netflix. The guy was cute and it looked like him and the girl he was next to had a nice connection so I asked what show it was. That’s how I discovered JATP, almost 2 weeks after its release. I also just have an unhealthy attachment to the show and the characters so I refuse to let this media that speaks to my soul die.
All that being said, we really deserved another season. I think it would cure me entirely, if I’m being honest. Even if it was just a little Christmas special where they decorate a tree and do those mini stories like filler episodes of a cartoon series. Hell, I’d settle for an animated JATP episode. I just think we all deserve it after what we’ve been through not only as a fandom, but as human beings. I will never forgive netflix for it’s terrible job at promoting, because they only failed when it came to this show specifically. They managed to keep every other show, even ones far less deserving of acclaim and attention, afloat during and after the pandemic. The only reason JATP managed to get anywhere was solely the cast, creators, and fans. Paul Becker was on fucking overdrive, churning out BTS videos WEEKLY. Fanfiction writers were bursting at the seams with multi-chapter series and one shots about every possible scenario. We got things trending on twitter during the two most chronically online years. Fanart was being shared like crazy, and we had the instagram fantoms so confused by the memes that they retaliated and claimed they were superior.
Meanwhile, tumblr was in its shadowbanning era, and fantoms were in the TRENCHES trying to get their content to reach beyond mutuals and taglists. We received barely any appreciation, except for when we trended on twitter asking to renew jatp and on tumblr for jatp appreciation week. Let’s not forget when we thought Owen had a secret tumblr and we all started accusing each other of being him. I will never forget when we all rallied to get Madi to 1 million followers because we didn’t want her to become overshadowed by the boys and all the attention they were getting. We all watched their instagram lives and I will always love the tumblr fantoms who made gifs of the cutest moments from those. Everyone saw me shamelessly simp over Charlie with facial hair wearing a santa onesie. We created a whole Carrie redemption arc out of thin air, we created origin stories for Rose and the Petal Pushers, and we forced the creators of JATP to give us the official last names of Reggie, Alex, and Flynn (This adventure SPECIFICALLY!!!) We were ruthless in our efforts to uncover their last names. We used breadcrumbs to make theories and speculations, only to end up begging in every comment section and dm inbox we could to get Reggie Peters, Alex Mercer, and eventually—though much, much later—Flynn Taylor. We gave Willie more crop tops, we basically storyboarded a second season, complete with episode titles and songs! We uncovered the Sunset Curve EP using the grainiest photos in existence, we created a loose timeline surrounding everyone’s birthdays, deaths, and significant events. We orchestrated a fucking CONCERT TOUR for this band. Oh, and let’s not forget when Kenny and the boys went to Hawaii. That Hawaii trip was so eventful for the fantoms, you have no idea how serious I’m being unless you were there for it. That was something unlike anything else for so many reasons. There’s a lot more, but that’s the stuff that came to mind immediately.

Godzilla minus one is (maybe?) The best movie I've ever seen
Anyways, I've been meaning to talk about this movie for a while bc I have some things to say. The movie is insanely good and at the very least the best movie I've seen in years. Genuinely.
This si the first movie that's made me cry for real, and hard, in as long as k can remember. The writing serves really well to help humanize, and make you relate to these distant characters who are connected thinly by chance and circumstance. we see these beautiful and charming friendships and relationships develop out of them. When the doctor first shows up he seems minor, some passing character like almost everyone else in the film. By the end he feels like a friend, you genuinely fear for his life.
I could talk about all the characters individually for hours but I won't. The use of godzilla in this film is exquisite. Genuinely made me feel terrified in the theater.
One major change I noticed in this movie is that godzilla really looks like an animal in this movie; this scene right here is what really made me realise this:

Godzilla has forward facing eyes, and deep ridges on his face, and seeing him next to human people, *the main characters*, helps the viewer to realise just how fucking *large* he is. This scene in particular made me really feel something in the theater I haven't felt in a long time.
This scene and several others where godzilla appears (which are thankfully used sparingly, in contrast to the recent Hollywood godzilla movie) use the soundtrack from the original/old godzilla movies. The iconic musical sting suddenly jumps out at you from an otherwise almost un-noteworthy musical soundscape. This is one of the scenes that's made me genuinely afraid for the main characters, and almost for myself. In most modern films I tend to think "they can't really kill off these characters important to the plot, they're fine" and so the fear and tension that's built is present but not really important. Godzilla minus one made me think "surely there's no way out of this, they have to be dead" and yet they always get away, and it makes the daring escapes genuinely thrilling and exciting.
The main character is relatable in so many ways. The one that really struck me was this conflicting desire to live, and desire to die. The man abandons his duty and risks shame and rejection for choosing to live; yet by the end of the movie he's accepted his fate, to die, and you almost root for his demise. You genuinely see things from his side. Without needing to be told I fully understood what was going through his head, why he decided he had to die for his family.
I could go on for just as long as I already have and I probably will but I really need to go do something else now so enjoy this stream of consciousness for now!

"Every one of these lines has slapped me five ways from Sunday but these four lines in particular had me crying on my floor at like midnight on the 20th of December, 2021, particularly while packing and also I had just finished Gideon the Ninth. It hit me hard enough that the date is cemented in my head. Its the yearning despite the knowledge you have fucked up. Its for the codependent blorbos. There’s one that’s always willing to make the sacrifice despite aforementioned fucking up and then you’re hit with the sudden reveal on the very last line that the other WILL actively go apeshit once they succeed, not just passive hope that the world stops. Its not even if they succeed, there’s a certainty they will but they go anyways. Beautiful instrumentals. It is MWAH the chef’s kiss of angsty blorbo soundtracks.
