"Oh? Did I volunteer to help?" Adam asked scrunching up his nose and humming thoughtfully for a moment before shrugging. "I don't really have anything better to do," now that was just sad really, but he didn't get to babysit Olivia until the weekend, and he was a tad tired of being locked up home or at work. He needed something else to do, and maybe an adult to talk to--Olivia's father Jack didn't really count as an adult.

"Can I make a suggestion? It'd be hard to remove him from here without the street and house cameras picking us dragging a body," he started. "It'll probably better to do something with it to decompose it or well, change his cause of death."

Adam would introduce his family first!! His parents heard him talking about Steven every single day for MONTHS before they finally got to meet him when Steven came to visit after he was mostly healed up. His parents adore Steven and ask him so many questions about his research, and are so excited to hear about his advancements in science!

Amazo origin spoilers! sort of has to do with why he had to leave

Adam's mom is Andrea Castillo, and she's a former superhero named The Heartland (retired) for Fair City.

Her powers are similar to Amazo's: Super strength, speed, with the addition of being an empath.

During her time as Fair City's main super, she used her power to be more of a social worker rather than a cop, which she passed that down to Amazo.

She trained him to fight, deescalate, and protect, as well as basic and extremely advanced human and alien first aid.

Basic first aid training is required by the Off World Heroes program because all current OWH's are defaulted to medics in times of war.

Andrea decided to expand that training because in emergencies, Amazo will and almost always is the very first responder, and he needs to be ready.

She and Georgie adopted Adam when he was 9 years old after he was sent away by his birth family.

He was scared, heartbroken, and in need of a loving home who cherished every bit of him.

Amazo's bio parents has very backwards values and noticed stuff early on and sent him away, thinking he wouldn't be a good look to the family.

They took him in and gave him everything and more on their little ranch on Earth.

Georgie got his nickname because Andrea thinks it's cuter that way (sound familiar? :D)

He's a high school history teacher and is amazing at helping his students understand the importance of certain events and ethics of things that have happened, so we don't repeat them.

He LOVES to cook and taught Adam everything he knows about food

Georgie's a very gentle soul, and he's super strong! Loves to carry Andrea around xD

Adam hoped to one day have a love with someone like his parents do. He was still scared of getting into a relationship with Steven because of what his bio parents said about those kinds of relationships.

Adam's parents gently and lovingly reminded him all the time that he deserves to be happy, and they'd be so excited to meet whoever he wanted to pursue.

Both Adam's mom and dad are extremely protective of him, knowing his abandonment issues and how he's still self-conscious of the very things he was sent away for.

Adam is the oldest of 4 kids, Adam being 2 years older than the next, and 4 years older than the next, and 5 years older than the youngest. (Adam was 9, next was 7, next was 5, next was 4 when he arrived. Chapter 5 ages are 21, 19, 17, 16)

His siblings are all also very protective of him, remembering the first year together he barely talked, but he loved to play with them.

Adam was mostly nonverbal for a little over a year when he first arrived on Earth and didn't make eye contact at all.

He was shown a lot of love from the whole family and neighborhood, and eventually learned that he was loved and wanted here.

Life can be unpredictable, events that you never expect to happen can occur and feel like that was always meant to happen all along. This is a lesson Kim has learnt over and over throughout her life, but one she’s only finally beginning to fully understand it, that it’s always going to happen in ways you don’t expect.

Like today.

Today, when she woke up, Kim thought she’d have a tiring day at work with all the racists that Kevin, and by extension them since Kevin is their family, is having to deal with but that it would be relatively drama free and she and her boyfriend—which is a word, that no matter how juvenile it sounds, makes her feel all giggly inside at—would come home and have a nice relaxing evening with their daughter.

She didn’t expect Patrol to not show up when they called and she definitely did not expect Adam to get shot. But that is life, as Kim has kept learning recently.

“Careful, let me grab the door.” Kim quickly darts in front of a very impatient and unfussed Adam, moving so she can unlock and open their front door before he can. Adam sighs.

“Kim, I’m not an invalid.” He grumbles and she flashes him a glare before she opens up the door.

“Adam, you were shot.” She holds up her hand. “And no I don’t care if it’s was in the vest. You were shot and you were lying there and I thought you were dead. And now you’ve got a bruise on your chest and Will said that you have to take it easy—it could affect your lungs if you overwork yourself.”

Kim already knows that she’s probably going to spend the next few weeks seeing Adam lying there on the grass whenever she shuts her eyes. Just like she knows that Adam gets why she’s being so fussy, even if he’s being his typical bad patient self.

“I can still open doors. You know I like opening our door for you,” At that, Kim turns away from the door, facing Adam. She closes what little distance they had between them, resting her hands gently on his chest.

“I know, but you’re injured. Let me look after you. And—we’ve only just found our way back together again, I don’t want to loose you, and I don’t want our daughter to loose you.” Adam’s eyes soften and he gently kisses her forehead.

“Yeah. I’m sorry, darlin’. I’m just stubborn.”

If this had happened years ago, this probably would’ve ended up making an even bigger dent in their relationship, and god knows if they’d be able to communicate—and truly understand each other back then. But they’re not those young people now, they’ve grown and learnt so much, and are completely dedicated to making this work.

Especially because they’re parents.

“Hey, Ally!” Adam is immediately greeting their six month old as soon as they enter the flat, Kim not far behind, the two parents cooing over her instantly.

“Can you hold her?” Trudy gives Adam a wary eye, holding the child she, without hesitation, claimed as her granddaughter. Normally they’d have their nanny here, taking care of Ally, but given that Adam was shot and had to be looked over, Trudy had relieved their nanny instead, just in case they arrived home later than usual.

“You’re as bad as Kim, of course I can,” Adam grumbles again, mostly with good humour. Still, Trudy glances at Kim just to double check, who nods and then Trudy is helping to pass the girl to her father. Usually, Adam would scoop the girl out of her arms with ease, but—showing that he is taking Will seriously, or at least their daughter’s safety seriously—he had hesitated, waited for Trudy to help.

“You should sit down, I’ll get dinner on.” Kim tells him. She then looks at Trudy. “Are you staying or going home? You’re welcome, of course.”

“I’ll leave the three of you be. Randall has his shift in the morning.” Trudy kisses her granddaughter good-bye—leaning down to do so, Ally babbling in Adam’s arms on the sofa—and then it’s just the three of them.

If you had told her a year and a half ago that this would be her life, Kim would struggle to belief you. Adam and her felt like history, something that never had the timing it deserved and that they’d only be relegated to friends with benefits.

And being a Mom? That was so far out from the cards Kim was dealt, she didn’t think it would happen for quite a few years, and even then, it felt like a impossible and distant thought.

But she has both. A relationship with Adam that is strong and decent and a proper, communicating relationship and the beautiful daughter who made it possible.

At first, Adam and her were determined to be co parents only. More her than him, if she was honest, but he understood her side.

But then Kim hit her second trimester and with it her renewed sex drive and inability to keep her hands off him and platonic co parents got more and more unbelievable—especially as they moved in together.

The reasons why they decided to just be platonic still hung over their head, however, and so they had to have a serious conversation—several, in fact—about their relationship and what it would look like and be like. They both knew that with a child in the mix, they had to be committed and determined because their baby would be impacted.

Kim did have worries about it, about if they could keep communicating and not fall back on old habits, but by the time Ally came along, their relationship had only grown stronger. The new-born stage is a tough time for parents, and they had their moments, but that only brought them even more closer and Kim now no longer has any of those worries.

Domestic bliss is something she’s always wanted to have, alongside a fulfilling job, and there’s days Kim can’t quite believe that she’s found it.

Her life isn’t perfect, no life is. And there’s tensions at work, and with their best friend going through some horrific stuff, life doesn’t feel easy. But they have each other, and they have Ally, and Kim keeps feeling like she’s reached as close to perfection as she could have.

When she was younger, Kim imagined that having perfection would be calm, would be peaceful. And maybe for others it is, but it’s not for her. There’s always some madness in her life; she’s a cop, after all. And she’s learned to appreciate the short peaceful moments that she gets. But sometimes, sometimes life is just quiet.

It had been a few weeks of quiet that Kim had realised her life hadn’t had any madness in it. Her and Adam were just going about their routine, day in, day out, watching as Ally continued to grow and marvel them and she realised that.

And then she knew instantly that the madness was coming.

It came the next day.

Adam and her had just picked up their morning coffee from a coffee shop. It had been a while since they could, usually having to make do with the district coffee—having a baby means time is precious and money is dear—but they did this morning, the two of them in a good mood and having a ridiculous conversation about boats.

And then there was a lost six year old girl walking through the road.

Everything got a lot more busy after that, as they tracked down her family and worked out what had happened.

Being a Mom has definitely changed Kim, and she had to go into a corner—Adam joining her, wrapping his arms around her—and have a little cry in the locker room. All she could think about her daughter, her Ally, loosing her family like that and it activated the still distantly present hormones leftover from her pregnancy.

And it made her more determined to help the little girl, Makayla, especially when the girl had apparently bonded to her. Kim was told that she was the best person to talk to her, and even though she’s a mother, she had doubted her abilities. There’s a difference between her baby who’s just learning to talk and move about to a traumatized six year old but the doubts were misplaced, Kim managing to get that connection.

Makayla had wanted her to come to the safe house with her, which Kim did. Luckily Adam was by Trudy’s desk and he gave her nod, telling her that Ally and him will be okay. Still, Kim was glad that she’s already had a night away from her daughter so that she could go with Makayla, so that she didn’t have to let down this vulnerable girl who needed her just as much.

The safe house had turned out to not be so safe, and Kim’s mama bear instincts—as Adam has affectionately coined—kicked in and she instantly said she’ll be taking Makayla home, no questions.

Of course, she had glanced at Adam, silently checking with him. Adam had nodded again.

“Ally’s already with her grandparents so yes, Makayla will be staying with us.” Adam had immediately supported her, his voice just as firm and decided. Kim had already worked out Ally was with Trudy and Mouch, as he was there and they are their emergency babysitters but she felt so lucky to have a partner who was willing to not have the night with his daughter for what she wants.

Seeing Adam interact with Makayla that night had made Kim’s insides twist, and she wonders if they might end up accidentally conceiving a second baby soon with how his paternalism stirred feelings inside her.

It left her feeling sadder than Kim would’ve thought to say goodbye to Makayla after everything was sorted, an emptiness in her heart. The girl had made an impact on her and it felt wrong to end the story there.

That night, Kim had hugged Ally close to her, Adam arm wrapped around her as he cuddled up to them.

“I think I want another,” Kim had said, and Adam choked. She had laughed, then, careful not to wake the sleeping baby on her chest.

“Not now or anytime soon. One baby is enough at one time. But in the future. This—us—being a family, it feels right and as perfect as our family is, I want it to be bigger.” She had explained. She’d have been nervous, but this is Adam, possibly the only person she knows whole heartedly that she can be herself, no judgement.

“Darlin’, nothing would make me happier.” He had kissed her temple firmly then, lacing their hands together and Kim got that feeling of perfect domestic bliss again.

“I’d say let’s have another right now but, yeah, one baby is enough. Although we could practice?” He then joked and Kim rolled her eyes at him.

It isn’t that long after that they’re at social services and Kim spots that precious six year old who, if Kim is honest with herself, hadn’t left her thoughts since, every few days Kim wondering if she’s okay, if she’s settling and adjusting and if the cousin Cathy would need to call her.

“Kim!” Makayla immediately runs to her, hugging her and Kim’s heart twists and constricts, warming at the gesture but breaking that she’s here.

They’re in the middle of a turbulent case, a case that plagues Kim, but her mind is still spilt, focused on worrying about Makayla.

“Where were you?” Adam asks her when she gets back from Cathy’s. Kim knows that she should’ve told him before, that going off alone like this when in a relationship and a parent isn’t how she should be behaving but as the couple’s therapist they went to say said, sometimes Kim can have tunnel vision. It’s something she’s working on, but sometimes she reverts back, like when a six year old needs her.

“I went to see Makayla’s Cathy.” Kim then tells him, and she tells him all about it.

“What if I take her in?” The words fall out Kim’s mouth before she can really process them. It’s nothing she should say, not just for the reasons Makayla’s social worker lists. But because Kim isn’t an I anymore. She’s in a relationship and she’s a mother. This isn’t just her life, but she can’t get Makayla—or the bond they have—out of her head.

After the conversation with her social worker, Kim sees Kevin. She wonders if she should ask him about this, about his siblings and that decision, knowing that he’ll have value to add to the conversation, especially as a black man. But she stops herself, knowing that she’s getting that tunnel vision again, that she needs to discuss this with Adam before she spirals too fast.

“I want to foster Makayla.” It isn’t the most tactful conversation, or the best place for it. But Kim’s mind is in overdrive and all she can think about is how she could feel at six, feeling like only Nicole loved her, and about that precious girl, and her own daughter.

“Us. I want us to foster Makayla.” Kim quickly amends, because they’re a team. Everything they do, they do together. They’re entwined and interlinked and the only way to make the relationship successful is by accepting and respecting that.

It’s a long conversation. It’s really not the time or place but that’s something that just doesn’t matter as much as talking. Kim tells Adam all about why she does, and he talks about how he feels. That he gets it, that he would want to give her a home just as much but has she thought this through.

They work out if they want it to only be temporary, how they’ll do it with Ally, if they’re ready and if they’re only doing this because they’re adapting to being parents, parents who often felt unloved as a child.

And they grab Kevin, adding him to the discussion, getting his two cents.

And then they come to a decision—that they should take Makayla home and they’re jumping into action. Kim calling the social worker, Adam arranging for Ally to be at her grandparents for the night as they get Makayla settled.

Everything picks up after that, quiet days rarely a thing even more than before.

They get Makayla into school, sets up their home so it feels more like hers, they get her into therapy and family therapy. They introduce her to Kevin, knowing he will have to play an important role in their foster daughter’s life.

Makayla adores Ally from the first time they meet, treating her with such care and love and Ally immediately bonds to her. It fills Kim with such joy and affection, and makes her heart feel so, so soft.

Kim was worried that them having Ally already would make Makayla feel like an add on, but it has the opposite affect, making her feel more like part of the family—two weeks in, Makayla tells Kim that she always wanted a little sister, and Kim’s happy that she may not have been able to save Makayla’s family, but at least she could do something.

It’s not smooth sailing. It’s tough and it’s work. Nights were hell, Makayla waking up screaming and rousing Ally, but it gets better, especially after they get Makayla trouble dolls. It’s an adjustment, for sure, but it’s fulfilling.

For Adam too, who’s taken to calling Makayla his lil darlin’ and all three of them his girls. Kim already knew he is a great dad, but seeing him dress up and play with Makayla, and being so calm and loving through her trauma just reaffirms that over and over, making Kim feel so happy that she gave them another chance.

Makayla is family long before the adoption going through.

Mack is one of the first words Ally says, reaching for her sister as she did so. Kim—and Adam, as they discussed it later—will never forget the utterly joyful grin that had spread across Makayla’s face at that.

“Ally said my name!” Makayla had exclaimed to them happily, and proceeded to tell everyone she saw over the next week, her excitement and joy never waning.

Trudy and Mouch immediately accept Makayla as another grandchild and the rest of the family treats Makayla like she belongs. Kim never had any doubts, but it warmed her heart to see how much Makayla clearly loved and was taken by it—and how it made her feel so much more settled, knowing she’s gained so much family even after loosing so much.

Sylvie takes it upon herself to be her honorary godmother and Makayla quickly learns that Sylvie is one of the best to play princesses with. Stella comes with Sylvie one day and Makayla is immediately enamoured by her, and soon Stella decides Makayla needs two godmothers.

The Atwaters are an essential part of their family, as they help Makayla keep that connection to her black culture, helping to make sure her identity doesn’t get lost and that she doesn’t feel like she has to pick sides between her old and new life.

Makayla and Uncle Kev have a day every month, just them, doing whatever they want. It’s not even about doing anything relating to their shared skin tone, but just a routine to establish that Kevin is there for her.

Jordan takes to Makayla quickly, as well, finding her cute and endearing. He tells them that she reminds him of Vinessa at that age, and quickly starts calling her his little cousin—another thing that Kim knows helps makes her feel like part of the family.

Makayla loves her ‘big cousin', Jordan often teaching her age appropriate jokes and helping her play harmless pranks. He also teaches her some dance moves, and laughs with her when she tries to teach Adam them, who fails spectacularly.

Jordan loves Ally as well, having seen Kim as part of his family for years but Kim knows that they’ll never have the bond that Jordan and Makayla have, and it’s something that makes her feel warm and fuzzy inside—that Makayla with have things that’s just hers, that she won’t ever feel like she’s in her little sister’s shadow. It’s important, Kim thinks, and she’s glad of it. Makayla is no less her daughter than Ally and deserves to never feel like she is.

Makayla is family before she is legally, before she’s adopted into a family who barely has any blood in common anyway. But the day the adoption goes through is a joyous day for all of them.

“I love you.” Makayla has said it to them before, and more to Ally. But that day she says it and it’s louder than a shy whisper but firm and sure and Kim can’t help getting teary eyed as they hug her, assuring their daughter that they love her too, so much.

“Thank you for wanting to be my mom and dad.” Makayla says that night, so earnestly and Kim tears up again, Adam too. And nothing has ever felt so right. Kim knows she’ll never replace her mom, and she doesn’t want to, and she knows that Makayla might not ever call them mom and dad but they are and Makayla sees them as that and it feels so right.

“We’ve got two daughters.” Kim giggles against Adam’s chest that night, when everyone is asleep.

“That we do. And we got to skip the baby stage so we could get our two daughters straight away,” Adam replies, referencing their conversation from the night Makayla went home with Cathy. Kim laughs again, cuddling against her fiancé—as of a week ago.

Life is unpredictable. It’s messy and chaotic and full of madness, and Kim’s learnt and accepted that. And life is wonderful and amazing, and not despite of that, but because of that.

Two years ago, Kim would not see herself like this. In bed with Adam, her fiancé, their two daughters sleeping and feeling like she’s got the most perfect life. And it’s all because life is unpredictable.

Kim used to think that perfect meant calmness. And then she thought that can’t be her life, because she’s choose a mad and crazy life, a life not designed to be calm. But as she lies in bed that night, Adam cuddling her, Kim knows that’s wrong.

Life does mean calmness, but not because her life is quiet and calm, but because it’s messy and chaotic. It’s messy and chaotic and it’s hers. She has all what she ever wanted, fulfilled in all areas, and it doesn’t matter if it’s unpredictable because that’s the beauty of it.

There’s such a peace and calmness inside of her, an ease that has been brought on only by the messy, imperfection and unplanned events of her life—and that’s what makes everything feel perfect; perfect within the chaos.

Mistletoe

For the 6th day of the @upsteadofficial Christmas word prompt--Mistletoe. (Rated T)

Note: Started this for the Presents prompt but didn’t finish it in time so used it for part of the 6th day instead. Hopefully it’s not too clunky.

“Upton. This has gotta stop.” Trudy Platt all but stomped over to Hailey’s desk. She unceremoniously dropped a small package on her desk. “See this?” She pivoted a bit to show her shoulder badge to Hailey. “Does this say ‘Postal Service’? No. It doesn’t. So stop having these delivered here.”

“Sorry, Sarge.” Hailey replied. Again she offered no explanation. The season would be over in another day and then this would all be over.  She slid the package to the far side of her desk without looking at it and got back to work as Trudy moved in to Hank’s office.

“You serious?” Jay asked over his computer.  “That’s like the fourth one. Who’s sending them?” He got up to round the corner to her desk but Hailey was faster. Barely looking, she palmed the package and slid it inside her desk drawer.

“It’s nothing, Jay. Really.” She tried for a smile but knew it fell flat. Just one more day. “It’s not important.”

“C’mon, you’re not even a little bit curious?” His brow furrowed. God knows he was. First came flowers. He’d made note of her face as she read the card, (It wasn’t a happy one) and later when he’d gone in to the break room for a bottle of water he saw them crammed in to the small trash can back by the couch. The next day there was a package. She’d checked the return address and slid it in to her bag underneath her desk. If Jay hadn’t been coming from the hallway after finishing up an interview with a suspect he wouldn’t have seen it happen. The next day there had been another package and now today.

“You have a secret admirer?” He asked, half teasing. For the first time since knowing Hailey he’d gotten her a gift. He hadn’t meant to, he told himself. He’d been with Will, killing time while he shopped for Hannah before they went for dinner and drinks, when he saw it. A simple necklace. A leather band with a small gold circle. He’d had it embossed with her initial and did his best to ignore his brother’s smirk as he joined him to pay. Now the thought that maybe there was someone else in her life, someone he wasn’t aware of, crossed his mind for the first time. He tried to tell himself that it was fine, she wasn’t his. But the only thing that gave him any solace was remembering her face at reading the card that came with the flowers. No eye roll—but a deep sigh and a scowl. If there was someone, it wasn’t someone she felt anything good for. That kept him going. Though he still wanted to know what was going on.

“You have a secret admirer?” He’d asked the question and she wasn’t sure how to take it. Was there some jealousy in that question? Concern? She shook it off on the inside. She’d rather not think about it let alone answer it.

“I wish,” she’d joked back and purposely got back to work.

Jay watched her for a moment. She was avoiding the question…and him. Rather than push him away, it only made him more curious, more prone to dig in and find out what was going on with her. He only wanted to help. She should have known better.

The next day brought no new case and one new package. Another slide in to the drawer as Hailey smiled in apology at Platt’s latest delivery. Hailey hoped that the gift card to her favorite coffee spot would soften her up a bit. She traded the envelope for the package and Hailey watched as Trudy peeked inside the card to see what was inside. “Well…” was all she offered before she walked away. But Hailey took it as a win and smiled at her back. She was still grinning as she turned back to her computer.

“Ah, there it is.” Adam clapped once and pointed at her. “Smile’s back, people!”

She rolled her eyes before looking up to see Jay watching her.

“It is nice to see again.”

She could feel the blush creeping up her cheeks so she ducked her head and tried to get back to focusing on finishing the paperwork she swore to herself she’d have done before clocking out for the night. Before she could just have the next 4 days to not think about the worst that Chicago had to offer, the innocent victims, the scenes she was called upon to see how the two factions met. She wanted to block it all out and just ‘be’ at home. Bad tv, sleeping in , a few late nights, these were the things she was looking forward to.

She didn’t mean to be a hard-ass lately but she knew she had been. This time of year, for as much as she enjoyed the majority of it, it was also a time that she dreaded. Knew the push that always came and this year had been no different.

“So tomorrow’s Christmas Eve.” Jay’s voice filtered through her thoughts as it always could. She looked up to him. “Got any plans?”

“Nope.” Her answer was cavalier as she closed a file.  “You?”

“Well,” he rubbed at his chin, not nearly as invested as she was in finishing his paperwork before their shift ended.  “Will’s working and…..no.” He smiled. “Soooo, would it totally kill your holiday vibe if I stopped over for a drink?”

“My holiday vibe?” she laughed. “Come over anytime, Jay. I’ll be home.”

He grinned and for the first time in a few years, realized he was actually looking forward to the holiday.

The next afternoon found Jay at Hailey’s door.  When she answered he found himself having to remember to breathe. She looked like herself, casual and relaxed, but at home that version was so much more her and it took his breath away for just a moment. It was happening to him more often and no matter how he tried to talk himself out of it, give justification to it, he knew he was simply lost in her. He’d finally realized his feelings but couldn’t quite figure out what to do about them.

“You okay?” She was staring at him, running their dynamic over in her head for the millionth time. There were times she thought they were both in sync, that he wanted what she did, to try and take the next step, to see if they could have something good past partners and friends. And then there were others where she was left feeling insecure and wrong and like she was spinning her wheels. She’d had offers of drinks, dinners…..of more, from other men. But none of the guys were Jay. None of them left her feeling like he did when he looked at her like he was right now.

“Yeah….yeah. Merry Christmas.” He offered a half smile as he walked in.

“You too.”

She’d already started on the tequila and had thrown some beers in the fridge. She offered him his choice, and they settled in her living room, and sipped their drinks in an easy silence.

Jay ran a finger around the rim of his glass and looked over to her. “Not too Christmasy around here.” He glanced around the room.

She huffed out a small chuckled and smiled in agreement. “Not usually around.”  At his look she explained. “I may have been known to pick up an extra shift here or there if the OT was available….or if not,” she smiled and inhaled deeply. “rent a place in Indiana or Michigan…some place on a lake. Quiet. Remote.” She shrugged a bit.

He looked at her nearly incredulous. “I really don’t know you at all, do I?” He meant it as a joke but shook his head at the information.

“You know me better than anyone Jay.” It had slipped out, immediate, quiet and earnest.

He nodded at her, solemn, quiet. Pleased at the comment.

“Okay then,” he breathed out. “Then what was the deal with those packages?”

He didn’t miss the small lip twitch, the flash of a dark look cross her face. When she didn’t respond, he tried again. “Hailey?”

Finally she spoke. She shrugged lightly. “I thought maybe…when I moved to this place….but my mom is smart.” She chuckled. “No address to send them to so she sent them to the district. They’re just…she never stops trying.”

“What do you do with them?” He probed.

“Donate them.”

“Do you know what they are? What they send?”

“Nope.” She shifted on the couch. “It’s easier not to.”

Jay nodded, trying to understand. “Sooo, nothing to open for Christmas then?”

She smiled a bit. “I don’t need presents, Jay.”

“Okay, that’s a lie.” He teased, reaching for his jacket and rummaging in a pocket. He pulled a small square box, neatly wrapped from it and passed it over to her.

Hailey swallowed hard. “Jay,” she whispered. “You didn’t have to….I didn’t…..”

“No, no, no. It’s not a big deal.” He chuckled and tried to play it down, now questioning his decision to give it.

“Can I…?” She glanced at the package.

“Yeah, of course. Go ahead.”

Hailey deftly unwrapped the paper neatly and Jay saw her eyes widen as she took the white top off the box.The dark band lay against the white cotton bed, the small gold circle shining in the living room light.

Jay found it necessary to start talking. “I just….you used to wear one like it and I saw it and just thought….”

“It’s beautiful.” She whispered, looking from it to him. “Thank you so much.” Her old one had broken off, she assumed, during a scuffle with an offender as she’d tackled him. When she’d gotten back to the district that day she’d noticed it was gone.

Hailey put the necklace on and Jay smiled, proud of being the reason she looked so happy in this moment. They sat and drank a bit for a while before Jay voiced an idea.

“Okay, so we’ve gotta get some Christmas spirit going.” He put down his glass and rubbed his hands together.

Hailey laughed. “I’m not getting a tree on Christmas Eve,” she laughed lightly. “so what are you thinking?”

“Molly’s. It looks like Christmas threw up in there. Like it should.” He grabbed for his jacket. “Whaddya say?”

The bar was packed. Locals having a few beers before going home to be with families, a few cops and fire fighters having a drink between ending shift and heading home, and a bunch of college kids home for break getting together with friends before being held captive by well-meaning family members wanting to know how school was and if they’ve met anybody special.

One of those kids stopped on his way back from the bathroom to do a double take at Jay and Hailey—and ogle Hailey.

“Bruh, you see where you are?” the kid asked. Jay didn’t and gave a mild one shoulder shrug, hoping if he ignored him he’d just move on. But he didn’t. “Better make your move dude, or I’m happy to step.in. Won’t have to tell me twice…though she may want to.” He smirked and grabbed suggestively and crudely at the front of his jeans.

Hailey grabbed Jay’s arm as he went to step up. The kid just smirked again and moved on.

“Let it go, Jay. He’s stupid and drunk.”

He was breathing heavier than normal with the adrenaline that pushed through his veins.  “Asshole,” he muttered, looking down the bar to where the kid had joined his friends.

He tried to focus back on Hailey and took a sip of his beer, calming down very little by very little. He took a deep breath and offered Hailey an apologetic smile that she returned with a ‘don’t worry about it’ one of her own. He was feeling better and glanced around the bar again, tipping his head up a bit as he drained the last of his beer. He choked.

“Shit….Jay, you okay?” Hailey was up off her stool and standing close to him, patting him on the back instinctively.

“Yeah….yeah,” he rasped. ”Just went down the wrong way.” He wiped at his mouth, and made a decision, quickly reaching for her hand. Feeling the warm skin and surprising softness of her hand under his, he dragged a quick thumb over her wrist. Hailey froze. She’d been about to sit back down when he’d touched her. She didn’t know what to do or say so waited him out, holding her breath.

He gestured upward, calling Hailey’s attention to the ceiling. When she saw it, she rolled her eyes with a grin and groaned lightly. But she didn’t move.

“Ohhh,  you gotta be kidding me.” Her laugh and smile faded as she caught Jay’s eye. His own had faded before hers and now he was just looking at her. Looking at her in that way that she never could name but that sent shivers down her spine nonetheless.

“Jay?” She whispered it softly.

“It’s tradition Hailey.” His voice was low.

She nodded slowly.  “Yeah. It is.”

Jay was still seated. He parted his knees a bit and took hold of Hailey’s waist, pulling her gently toward him. Her eyes never left his as she shuffled forward.

He pulled a hand from her waist to the back of her neck and she placed hers on his shoulders.

“We doing this?”

“I think it’s about time. So—yeah.” He huffed out a sly smile, genuinely happy.  She leaned in to him just as he gave her neck a gentle pull. The first kiss was soft, quick, and tentative. The second and third were soft and meaningful. Purposeful. The fourth was leading toward hungry.

When Jay pulled back slightly it was to find Hailey looking at him, her eyes bright as he thumbed circles at her waist. Neither said anything with both just enjoying the moment.

“Merry Christmas, Jay.” She smiled.

He chuckled lowly. “Merry Christmas, Hailey.”

She was knocked a bit closer to him by the group moving from down the bar past them, as they headed toward the exit.

Jay held on to Hailey tight as she was jostled in to him. The drunk kid from earlier threw them a look and Jay took advantage of it. “Hey bruh…..thanks!” Jay grinned before sliding a hand to Hailey’s jaw and pulling her in for another kiss under the mistletoe.

VIII: Struck by Lightning

(Batgirl/Red Hood)

Description: Reader makes a confession, and goes on a date. Previous.

In the weeks succeeding the Little Italy mission, I found a rhythm in the two conflicting heartbeats of my life. Occasionally, I met with Jason to file down the multitude of criminals who opposed him (it wasn’t all rescuing orphans and kittens, but his justice was fair and swift), and other than that, I carried on with life as normal; both as myself, and Batgirl. It was an inconsistent, exciting balancing act.

I tried to humor Bruce’s transparent attempts to placate me with cold cases, deeming it study. My school work had unsurprisingly lost its appeal, and I found myself rocking in the river banks of what was sure to be a failing grade in most of my classes- though I had yet to run ashore. Yet.

I danced along, despite my reprisal (a lack of sleep, and white lies on either side), and overall there was a certain stalemate. With that, peace. Or at least, the closest I could get.

On a Saturday I happened to have free (to my great relief), I woke up at one in the afternoon, to a blessedly dim day that kept the light in my room dark enough to cradle my lie-in.

I washed the sleep from my face, and stumbled downstairs, muscles sore from a Thursday night mission with Jason at the Port (of which I told my family I was going to a party). Tim was the only one in the kitchen- looking like he, too, had just crawled out of bed. He was eating cereal in silence.

We hadn’t been avoiding each other, per say- just got wrapped up in our own routines. Routines that kept me out of the house, and him trapped within it.

“Morning.” I said.

“Mm.” He replied.

I poured out my own bowl of cereal and settled on top of the glossy white granite. It was kind of a running joke at the Wayne household that you could sit anywhere but the chairs. Even Damian picked up on it- and, naturally, he was the best at it- perching his lithe little form atop the fridge at one point.

Now, Tim and I sat side by side on the countertop, shoulders brushing and spoons clanging against our glass bowls. Nothing more was said, but it was a comfortable silence.

I thought, for a second, about the world he’d been living in for the past few months as November bled into December. About his work and his many, many jobs he had to do. The way he shouldered them all week-to-week. He didn’t have to, but he did.

Tim made me a better person. I thought so, anyway.

But then, before I met him, I was the kind of person who let Carolyn Crawford slap me across the face to cover for someone else’s secret. Now, I was the kind who let other people take the blame for mine. Maybe Tim didn’t make me a better person. Only I could do that.

“I need to talk to you.” I said it firmly, and with authority. Mostly to convince myself that I was certain in my intention to go through with it. Bruce eyed me, looking up from his book.

“Alright.”

“...”

“...”

“In private.”

Alfred and Damian’s voices carried through to the living room as they had tea (an evening tradition). Bruce nodded, closed his book, and led me upstairs.

His office was a quiet, peaceful place. Finished dark wood, glass tables, and black leather accents. It was the room in the house that was most furnished to his own private taste, and thus, a glimpse inside was into him. It was mostly predictable; W.E. briefcases, notebooks and pens, case files open, and a map of the city that was displayed behind his desk. But there were other things too; a rubik’s cube half solved on the settee, a magazine featuring Vicki Vale with a pen in her hand and a defiant, head-strong look on her face. A gorgeous trailing point knife that belonged to Damian (probably confiscated).

I sat down in the chair that faced his own; his giant, glossy desk between us. I wanted to be swallowed into the dark leather. I felt like I was back at the shrink.

“Tim didn’t sneak off on the 21st.” I said quickly, cutting off the silence as quickly as I could. “He’s not the one who saw Red Hood kill that guy. It was me. I made Tim promise not to tell. He lied to cover for me.”

Bruce was quiet. He did that a lot; made you wait for him to speak. Seconds, minutes, hours. It all felt the same when he let you simmer in your own mistakes. I didn’t look up.

“I see.”

Silence. A long, testing silence. His irritating little desk clock ticked away.

“Is that all you wanted to tell me?” He asked.

I nodded.

“Very well. You’re dismissed.”

“Really?” I asked. “That’s it? You’re not mad?”

He paused. “Should I be?”

I blinked, gaze falling on the floor. “I put Tim in a really shitty position. He didn’t have to lie, but he did because I asked him to. I’m mad at me.” I admitted quietly.

Bruce nodded pedantically, resting his head on his hand. “Then that’s good enough for me.”

I furrowed my brow. It wasn’t good enough for me. “It was wrong.” I clarified, trying to press for some manner of reprimand that I didn’t truly want, but felt deserving of anyway. Bruce considered this, in his quiet, inscrutable way. After a moment, he spoke.

“Your mothers trusted me.” He said. I knew that. My parents were business-oriented like that. They were pulled together by happenstance, each without family and carving their own way in the world by studying international law, and applying it to companies who could afford private foreign trade, such as Wayne Enterprises. I attended the parties, the galas, standing around in my designer gowns while my moms handed out their business cards and talked about imports. They weren’t neglectful, just distracted.

“I don’t know if you remember-“

“I do.”

And if I had a dollar for every time the cops or the shrink asked me if I remembered that night, I’d buy my own manor.

Bruce Wayne was at my birth. He and my mothers had been business partners for a while by that time. He watched me, dutifully, when my parents went on date nights, and played catch with me when I accompanied him and Dick to the park. He cooked me breakfast the morning after my mothers died.

I knew it wasn’t a random killing, but he didn’t talk about why they were murdered in their own bed until I was fifteen. By then, I was knowledgeable enough to go searching through the police reports on my own. So instead, one night he’d sat me down at the kitchen table, looking at me earnestly.

“You have to understand, Y/N. Your mothers were...” He’d taken a deep breath. Tried again. “They were involved in things. Things I didn’t know about. It made them a lot of enemies.” Then, something harder passed his features. A frustration.

“They were completely blind to the fact that it meant you would never have a normal life. Not as long as they kept it up- that... double life.” I let the statement hang in the air for a time. “That was stolen from you, from the moment they got involved with the Baciu. And I’m sorry.”

It was easy to be sorry. I was sorry, too. My mothers got themselves tangled in Gotham’s heroin trade, and they weren’t careful enough, so they died for it. It was fairly cut and dry. Open file, close case. But the part that was so bitter to swallow was that it happened to me. A fourteen-year-old child creeping into my mothers’ bed because I’d heard a noise, and the re-runs of Ghost Hunter I’d religiously consumed were conjuring movement in the shadows. But there were no ghosts. Just sheets stained with blood that looked black in the darkness. Just the wet, clogged sort of sound when I peeled back the covers, unable to register they way my mothers were bent, and stilled in a way that only death can induce, where just earlier that night they’d been walking and talking. Bringing me Chinese take-out for dinner.

Their death, and everything that followed was emptying. Cracking open a great chasm and bringing death home, into the halls, and into my room. No longer a rumor. It was an empty chair, and a storied space made cold and worthless. It would’ve been easier if they had simply died as a random killing. Tragic, standard, random Gotham City killing. If I had just been that unlucky. If they’d only been struck by lightning. Instead, I grieved twice; once for who they were, and another time, for who I thought they were.

When Bruce adopted me, I became Batgirl. I made it my own vendetta to stop criminals without killing them, because I knew that some- most of them had children at home who would be the real victims if I did.

But then, I thought deeper. More considerately, about who my mothers were. Moreover, who they weren’t. Pearl and gold, white teeth and hairspray. Singing to me, and playing Monopoly, at which they were both so competitive that they had to kiss and make up after every game. Bringing me a strawberry cupcake in bed every year on my birthday. Kissing me on the head. Telling me to be good. Leaving me in that big house. Going off to Port Adams, or Crime Alley. Signing orders. Putting bodies in Finger River.

Nobody’s innocent here, dollface.

“They trusted me.” Bruce’s voice interrupted my reminiscing with the ghosts of my past. “I know their death was hard, and you may still be recovering. I’m trying to do the best I can for you.” He finished. For all the gnashing teeth and avaricious expanses of Gotham City secrets, he looked tired.

“I know, Bruce.” I said quietly. “Me too.”

The following Tuesday, I got home from school and started on a mountain of homework I needed to do- some make up work as well. Christmas break was around the corner, and I was slowly losing motivation as the semester drew to a close. I had too many distractions; and tonight was no exception.

Ding.

My phone buzzed, and I looked down, eyebrows raising to find that it was a text from Jason- one that wasn’t just a pin dropped to a location.

Meet me at Twin Sharks. I’ll buy you a coffee.

- What’s the occasion?

No reply. I sighed. I should’ve called him and made him tell me, but I knew that I would go no matter what, so I decided to play the apathy card. Despite my cool response, my heart (the traitor) was fluttering like a bird. Was this about the kiss? Our partnership? Was it an actual, regular date? Or was he breaking it off? My mind raced, and as I pulled together a tasteful outfit and sprayed myself with perfume, I promised myself that it wasn’t for him.

The Twin Sharks was a diner in Upper West Side, near China town. It was nicer than the likes of Sherman’s, or anything else East End had to offer. The late afternoon was unexpectedly bright, clouds parted for a sweet reprieve of gold and blush in the sky. The sun was a striking blood-orange, hung low over the city. It struck a match in my chest- some childish, poetic hopefulness.

The diner’s door jingled, and I scanned the booths and tables. It was a little crowded, but I spotted Jason alone in a booth, his eyes cast down, involved with his phone. I made my way over to him, slipping off my coat and plopping down his opposite.

“Hey.” I said. His eyes fell upon me, and I saw something on his face- maybe surprise, or something to that effect- before he composed his expression into something unreadable.

“Hey.”

The diner had a big, hot pink neon sign that depicted a matching pair of sharks above the counter. Its buzzing glow mixed with the orange gleam of the lowering sun through the windows- it was all very rose-colored.

The waitress put a coffee in front of me, and I got to work on adorning it with the little cream and sugar packets on the table. He watched me do it for while.

“What?” I asked, narrowing my eyes.

“Nothin’.” He said. Then, he reached across the table, and took my hand, pulling it back to him, and pressed a soft kiss to my knuckles. I was so startled by it that I dropped the sugar packet I was holding. Neither of us seemed to notice. He turned my hand over and placed another kiss in the inside of my wrist before returning it safely to my side of the table. I was certain my face burned like the neon sharks.

“I’m- um- is this a date?” I asked, trying to get him to say something- anything- to get my mind off the way he’d just reduced me to a puddle.

He looked amused by that. “You want it to be?”

“I don’t know.” I shrugged, stirring my coffee. “You invited me.”

He nodded, eyes falling away. “Yeah. I’ve got an update for you. D’amici business.”

“Oh.” By the look on his face, it wasn’t good news.

“You’re not gonna like it.”

“Perfect. My day’s been a little too good so far.” I said. He slid me his phone- on the screen was an article from the Gotham Quarterly.

Young Bride Found Murdered in Diamond District Estate

I read over it a couple times, brow furrowing. “You mean...“

“Penelope. It happened last night.”

“Shit.” I muttered, scrolling down and scanning through the article. My throat caught as I read over it. She was shot in her bed. “It says there’s no suspects.”

“Course it does. It’s the mafia. They handle things nice and quiet.”

“And I’m guessing you have a few a suspects.” He nodded grimly as I slid his phone back to him.

“One better. I know exactly who did it. I think you do, too.”

I put my head in my hands, mulling over my options. Really there was only one. Penelope’s beautiful, flustered face and apologetic eyes flashed through my mind. Her wind-chime laugh as we ate scones under the watchful eye of her adoring, peculiar grandmother.

“Okay.” I resolved. “Let’s get that girl justice.”

Day 31 of writing challenge (I somehow skipped 14 last time.)  Inspired by a whump fic prompt of a victim dying, locked in the back of a car at an old gas station.

Isbecki bites off more than he can chew when he answers a dangerous call alone.

Victor held his hand against the stab wound in his stomach. Little good it was doing, judging by the amount of blood slipping through his fingers. He should just move his hand and bleed to death quicker, that is, if the pain in his head didn't do him in first.  No one was going to reach him.

The 911 call had been bogus. He'd caught the call for a 'burglary in progress' at the old gas station, even though he was technically off duty, as it was just a block off his usual route home. He had known something was wrong as soon as he’d pulled up. This place wasn’t just old. It was abandoned. Still, he'd gotten out and approached the building with caution. Might have been a mugging, or worse, misreported by a passerby. Could be still in progress, or an injured victim still around.

 He spun on his heels when he'd heard the woman screaming behind him. Before he could decipher exactly where the scream had come from, he felt as though his head had been split open as someone hit him from behind with what felt like a crowbar. He’d gone down hard and had been surrounded by five or six young men, hitting, kicking, and punching him until he couldn't even try to get up. Then they had dragged him over to his car and thrown him in the backseat, but not before one of them gave him a parting gift of a switchblade to the gut, then slammed the door essentially trapping him there to bleed to death. Spots were dancing in front of his eyes as he heard the radio crackle to life.

 "522 to base, 522 check in…,” the tinny voice called out.

 He'd love to. He slammed a weak fist against the thin piece of plexiglass separating the front seat from the back. They had been installed in all the undercover cars after a Detective from the 10th had been choked out by a perp with his handcuffs.  Though even without it, he wasn’t sure he'd have the strength to haul himself over the seat to answer.

Funny that something designed to save his life was going to aid in ending it.

"522, are you code 4?" the voice rang out again.

No, he wasn't Code 4.  He wasn't all good. He was dying. He kicked, uselessly at the Plexiglass, then groaned, eye's wide with the pain that caused. Stupid.

Two calls. Usually, after a third unanswered call, they sent marked cars to your last known location, but not for him. He'd ignored too many well checks when he'd thought himself "too busy'. Hadn't Jolene just been on his ass about that two days before?

Jolene.

Now he wished he’d have stopped by her office one more time before leaving and given her a real goodbye instead of just stuffing a dirty note in her jacket pocket as he'd signed out for the day. Of course, he hadn't thought it was a real goodbye. He had thought he would be seeing her in an hour when she got off work and came over to his place to eat Chinese take-out and watch the Knicks game on television. 

In the three years since she’d moved to New York, she'd become one of his best friends. Okay, so she had questionable taste in music preferring Simon and Garfunkel to Barry Manilow, that is when she wasn't listening to that God-awful country junk, but she was always up to catch a Mets or Knicks game from the cheap seats, drinking bad beer and splitting nachos. Or all for spending an afternoon in a dark theater watching an old John Wayne movie. 

Of course, this meant he’d spent his fair share of time going to Broadway plays, sappy romance movies, and rip off Urban Cowboy dance clubs. Hell, he had even learned to two-step when he’d realized that he really didn't like those wannabe cowboys pawing at her while he sat at the bar talking to her friend, Analise. 

Then about six months ago everything had changed. They had gone to the Policemen's Ball together. They’d had a great time, drinking, laughing, and doing their damnedest to show up Marcus and Claudia on the dance floor. 

He’d walked her to her door, like always since she didn’t live in the best building since moving out of Analise’s Park Avenue penthouse. Maybe they had been a little drunk, or maybe they'd just needed that excuse if things didn't work out, but when she'd dropped her keys, they'd both reached for them bumping heads instead. Laughing, they'd stood up, both with a hand to their head. Looking into each other's eyes, the laughter had died, and they'd reached for each other, kissing as though they had invented it.

When he'd woke up in her bed the next morning, he'd worried that he'd ruined everything. Hadn't he turned Christine down for that very reason? Except it wasn't the same. Christine had wanted validation and an escape. Jolene had wanted him.

Still, she'd been adamant that she didn't date cops. He hadn't been sure she would feel the same in the harsh morning sun as she had slightly tipsy the night before. He knew he hadn't needed to worry when she’d woken up and smiled at him.

No one at the station knew yet, well except Petrie, who had bumped into them out on a date and still hadn't gotten it until Claudia had pointed out that they were intruding and pulled Marcus away. It was just as well. He never could keep anything from his partner.

“522 report to base." The voice was getting more insistent. 

He shook his head and stared at the roof of the beat-up old car. How ironic. Hadn't Jo just said this very thing was going to happen?

When he'd gotten to work two days before and saw the note on his desk, summoning him to the Dispatch Director's office, he’d grinned and thrown a suggestive look at Petrie as he'd passed his desk.  

“Yeah,” Petrie laughed. “She was here at four to pull the tapes from this weekend.  You may not be so happy when you get back there.”

“Nah, it’ll be cool.”  He’d encouraged Jolene to go after the Director’s job when Thomas had retired the year before knowing she’d be perfect for it with her background and experience.  She’d been worried about others who had been there longer thinking she was stepping on their toes, but he knew that most of the dispatchers were either retired patrolmen who still wanted to be involved or people just looking for extra income or the insurance.  No one who wanted the responsibility of running the department.  

And she was great if a little too stuck on protocols that Thomas had ignored.  Like well-checks.  

She didn’t look in the mood to appreciate his humor or innuendos right then, so he just took the seat across from her desk.

“How did it go this morning?  Was the dispatcher rude?” He asked, knowing that the reason she’d come in so early was that one of her dispatchers had been accused of behaving improperly during a 911 call and she had to review the tapes to see if he had been before writing him up.

She yawned and shook her head.  “From the standpoint of a dispatcher, no.  He was a little brusque as he explained the limitations of just what Officers could do if he sent them out, but he wasn’t rude or lying.  But, if I was a Mom whose 18-year-old daughter just ran off with a 48-year-old man, I’m not sure how I would take news I didn’t want to hear either.  I’m not going to write him up, but he is going to have to do some sensitivity training which means I do too.”

“Sorry, Babe.”

“That’s not why I called you in here.”  She walked around and sat on the corner of her desk.  “I had to listen to the tapes for almost the whole weekend.  Victor, you ignored four well check calls.  Not answered them late, just flat out ignored them. We rolled marked units four times and you were fine. That’s four times they could have been dealing with real problems.”

He rolled his eyes.  “Would you have rather that I wasn’t okay? I was busy.  I can’t always stop to answer the radio. Half the time I don’t even have one. I’m sorry.”

“I’m not talking about when you are undercover,” she replied, trying to keep her temper under control.  “I’m talking about when you are just on the street.  Look, I know you are used to wearing a wire and not breaking your flow, but when you aren’t, you must answer the calls.  It’s the only way we know you are okay and don’t need back up.  There are eight thousand police officers in this city and five hundred and seventy of them work in this building alone and my six dispatchers have to keep up with every one of them.  We don’t have time to chase around those of you who think we’re a joke!”

“I don’t think you’re a joke,” he replied.

“Could have fooled me,” she shot back.  “I don’t have them doing well check calls because I want to be a pain in the ass, or I want to make sure they’re awake. I do it because…, because I want every one of those five hundred and seventy officers to make it home.” She stopped and covered her face with her hands before whispering, “Especially you.” She wiped at her eyes before looking back up, her earlier anger abated.  “I’m sorry.  It’s just that…, I’m scared that one day you won’t answer because you really need help, but no one will pay any attention because they’re used to you not answering and I don’t…, I can’t…,” she stopped again.  She got up from the desk and turned her back to him. 

Victor stood up and went over to her, wrapping his arms around her waist and kissing her temple.  “I’m sorry, Baby.  I guess I didn’t realize how important it was.  I’ll do better.  I promise.”

“Well, you better.  Next time I’ll have to write you up,” she sniffled, looking up at him and smiling.

“Hmm…, you know, it was kind of hot when you were yelling at me.  Might be worth getting written up for to get yelled at again,” he teased, leaning down to kiss her. 

“Idiot,” she laughed, pushing him away. “Come to my place tonight. I’ll yell at you all you want, and it won’t have to go in your personnel file.”

“522 to base, come in 522,” the voice called again.

He didn’t realize that day would be just two days later.

“Miss Baker?” A new woman named Nannette stopped her as she was getting her jacket to leave.

“Yes, Nannette?”  She replied, distractedly, as she pulled the note out of her pocket, blushing as red as her hair when she read it.  That man was truly twisted. 

“Detective Isbecki answered at burglary in progress call five minutes ago and he isn’t answering the well checks.  Do you want me to keep trying or just send out back up?” Nanette asked.

“Wait. You didn’t send back up to start with? You always send back up with ‘in progress’ calls. Get on it,” Jolene scolded.  She shoved the note back in her pocket and rushed to an empty console.

“Isbecki, call base.  Isbecki…,” No, they weren’t supposed to use real names over the radio and maybe she was a little more panicked than she should be, but a sick feeling had settled into the pit of her stomach.  No way was Victor just not answering after the talk they’d had.  He’d sworn he wasn’t going to do that anymore. Something was wrong.  She knew it. “Victor!  Please answer me! Victor! Victor!”  She waited for maybe another two seconds, instead of minutes like she was supposed to before the panic got the best of her and she initiated an ‘Officer Down’ code.  If she was wrong, 1PP would have her ass, but if she wasn’t, he could already be…, No. She wasn’t going to think like that.

Victor was fading in and out of consciousness when he heard Jolene call his name.  First, Isbecki, then Victor.  Over and over.  He had to be confused.  No way she would use his real name on the radio.  Wasn’t confusion a bad sign when you were wounded?  He couldn’t remember anymore. He closed his eyes, his hand falling away from the wound in his stomach.  It didn’t matter anymore.  No way would anyone find him in time.

“Victor!  Stay with us! Help is on the way!” Jolene called out again, rousing him from the stupor he was falling into.  

Why did she sound so scared?  Jo never got rattled.  He was okay. Everything was fine.  He wasn’t even in that much pain anymore.  

“Victor!”

He wanted to let her know it was okay.  He was fine.  Even his head wasn’t aching anymore.  It was going to be fine.  “Jolene, Baby.” His voice came out barely above a whisper before the world went black around him.

“Victor! Victor!”

He felt someone slapping his cheeks, trying to wake him.  But it wasn’t Jolene calling his name this time. It was Marcus.

“Victor! Victor!  Come on, Man!  You can do it.  You can’t go out like this,” Marcus said, still slapping him.

“Jolene,” he said, again, trying to open his eyes. The world spun as he tried to make his eyes focus and he was sure he was going to puke.  He was still in his car, but now Marcus was beside him, holding pressure against his stab wound with one hand and trying to bring him around with the other.

“That’s it,” Marcus said, relief breaking in his voice. “That’s it.  Stay with me, Partner.  The ambulance is almost here. CHRIS! MARY BETH! WE GOT HIM BACK,” he yelled outside the car.  “Get that ambulance here!”

Victor wanted to tell him to shut it, the pain in his head slamming him back into consciousness as Cagney slung open the other door.

“Ambulance is two minutes out,” she reported.  “Hang on, Victor.  We got you now.  Just hang on.”

The abandoned building was bathed in red and blue lights as the paramedics removed him from the car, but Victor barely noticed as he slipped from consciousness again, the pain of being moved too much to handle.

As soon as the paramedics had taken over for Marcus, he’d opened the front door of the car and grabbed Victor’s radio mic from its hook.

“We got him, Jolene.  We got him.”

“Thank God,” she whispered before dropping the mic. “Thank you, God.”  Then she lost her lunch in the nearest wastebasket. She’d never been that scared in her life.

90 Days

What can you accomplish in three months? Could you lose weight? Could you find love? Would you really know if a job you thought you wanted was the right fit? If you were still a fetus within those first three months, you’d have grown from a single cell to about the size of a domino piece that, according to WebMD, could open and close its fists. 

Most tourist visas (for fetuses and otherwise) last 90 days. I’ve often wondered whose decision this was, and why. When I was staying in Serbia on a tourist visa, I never seemed to be able to get a straight answer, which was par for the course.

I’ll never forget the first time I had to leave Serbia because my tourist visa was expiring. It was October 2007, and the weather was finally beginning to turn colder. I’d had my mom pay too much money to mail me my own sweaters from home, but even her monetary efforts couldn’t delay the passage of time.

Adam and I woke up early that morning because we wanted to go to Tempo (think a smaller version of Wal-Mart) to buy a wall heater for the upstairs bathroom of the house. The closest Tempo was in Baja, Hungary. Baja wasn’t that far from Sombor, so going to Tempo seemed like the perfect opportunity to get my obligatory border crossing out of the way, and make it back to Serbia without too many sideways glances at my U.S. passport. Privately, I hoped that the same policemen who were on the Serbian side the Hungarian border when we crossed would still be there when we came back, so I wouldn’t have to explain the whole story of what I was doing in that part of the world to someone new, even if I didn’t know what my whole story was. 

We crossed into Hungary without incident, and I got a stamp in my passport of a little car as proof of when and how I’d left Serbia that day. It sat nicely next to the one of a plane that said Surčin from when I landed at the airport in Belgrade almost three months before. It was a new day, but the sun wasn’t up yet. I’d been spoiled by the long days of summer. While the days had grown gradually shorter since the end of June, I remember looking at my watch thinking the sun should have been up by then. Whatever my circadian rhythms were telling me, our first priority was to exchange our dinars for the local currency, forints. 

As we drove around Baja looking for a place to exchange money, the city looked to still be asleep. Adam finally found a hotel with an open exchange office, and we were on our way.

Tempo was just as dead. I was amazed at how few people were in the store. Most of them were older, and moved quite deliberately, either as a sign of their age, or other conditions not so easily estimated by the naked eye. It reminded me of visiting Wal-Mart with my dad to gather supplies for days of painting Spartan Municipal Stadium for my Eagle Scout service project. 

Adam’s phone rang just as we walked out of the store with the wall heater. It was his father, and my yoga teacher, Fabijan: 

“You guys got up really early this morning,” he said.

It was only then I realized that we’d both forgotten about the time falling back an hour overnight. We finally understood why we had such trouble finding an open exchange office, and why Tempo had been largely devoid of human life. 

We crossed back into Serbia, but since the police had taken the white card that was my Declaration of Temporary Residence when we left, I’d have to go back to the police station and get another one -- the first of many such trips in the years to come. When I went to the police station in Sombor that Monday to get another white card, the lady behind the desk looked really confused. Her lips didn’t form any words, but her facial expression seemed to say, “You left Serbia and came back?” It’s also possible that she’d seen a U.S. passport as often as she’d seen a guy with two fs in his last name like me. Serbian is written exactly as it’s spoken and vice versa, so the second f at the end of Ratcliff would be unnecessary.

I left Sombor for Novi Sad not long that return trip to the police station, but my 90-day clock never stopped ticking. My first two weeks in Novi Sad were the hardest. Not only was I sleeping on Ivica’s (someone I barely knew) couch, but I also couldn’t register at his address because he only rented the apartment. I needed to legally report my presence to the Novi Sad police in exchange for yet another white card, but I first had to hope that Fabijan and Slavica - especially Slavica - hadn’t already reported to the police in Sombor that I was no longer living with them. Fabijan had at least been gracious near the end of my time in Sombor, telling me one day that he didn’t ask me to come, so he wouldn’t ask me to leave. Slavica, on the other hand, struck me as the type of vindictive cunt who would snitch on me to the cops out of pure spite, since it turned out that I wasn’t the rich, look-at-me symbol of American excess she needed to trot out in public to stroke her ego and become the envy of the neighborhood.

If Slavica decided to rat me out to the police in Sombor, I would have had to go to the police in Novi Sad with either the owner of Ivica’s apartment or at least her lična karta (national ID) as proof she knew I was living there. Given how my welcome in Sombor had worn out, and the fact that the lady who owned the place had no idea I’d crashed on the couch, this wasn’t something I felt comfortable doing. During those two weeks, all I did hope and pray the lady didn’t show up unannounced, as I had. I worried about being kicked out of the country since I could have had police from both cities after me. I thought even Serbia’s bureaucratic system, which was notorious for making things extraordinarily difficult on its own citizens, would be able to produce all the evidence it needed to deport me as something of a persona non grata within a matter of minutes.

Tick... tick... tick...

There were times when Sanja’s business partner and fellow English teacher, Maja, would take me to their school in Šid to get my trimestral obligation out of the way. Strangely, from Novi Sad, it was easier to get to Šid by briefly crossing into Croatia rather than staying in Serbia the whole time. Maja told me she’d seen cops prop their feet up on the swinging gate on the Serbian side of the border to combat boredom, and she even heard one admit to watching westerns to pass the time.

More than once after I started working with Daniel and the man in the cowboy hat, we’d hop in the man in the cowboy hat’s yellow Chevy Spark, cross the border with Croatia to get the exit stamp, and just turn right back around. I could feel that the women who worked in the division of the Novi Sad police department responsible for keeping track of foreigners were growing more and more suspicious of me. One lady, in particular, had long black hair, and eyes that seemed to burn a hole through my forehead every time she looked my way. To this day, I don’t know if she was angry because she saw me so many times, or because my appearances frequently interrupted her morning coffee service, and make her do work that didn’t involve her playing hostess.

Whatever her motivation, or lack thereof, I wished she’d focused her energy on stopping crimes committed by Serbian citizens, and let my single American life slide. Besides, her country’s institutions of law enforcement had such a history of helping criminals get out of the country with fake passports in the nineties, that I didn’t think any policemen would pay attention to the fact I was trying to stay in my real American one almost two decades after their most recent round of wars ended (at least on paper). That is until I heard a knock at the door one day.

I’d been living with Zs. under somewhat more comfortable conditions. With Sanja’s help, I’d managed to get the mandatory health insurance I needed because Serbia’s visa regime was undergoing changes meant to harmonize its regulations with those of the European Union. We’d also managed to get my fiancée visa in just under the wire. Due to another change, if I hadn’t transitioned to a fiancée visa before my last tourist visa had expired, I would have had to leave the country for three months before being allowed back in. Some kind of 90 days in, 90 days out rule had been put on the books by the time the knock came. 

Zs. was still in her underwear. I’d just finished my latest hack job attempt at shaving. I’d nicked myself in too many places to count, and applied dozens of tiny toilet paper squares to my face to curtail the bleeding. The sound of the knock startled us both. A quick glance through the peephole in the door showed two uniformed police officers waiting outside. Zs. ran to put on pants, I ran to dispose of any flyers advertising schools of foreign languages, worried that if the wrong eyes fell upon them, I’d find myself having to explain away almost indisputable evidence that I’d been teaching English under the table because I had no legal right to do so. This time, I didn’t have to worry about Slavica. I had to worry that the mere sight of an officer’s holstered gun would compel me to tell the truth, just as it had when I was a kid, and my dad would stroll in to the kitchen every Sunday night dressed in uniform to work bingo, and share in the roast my mom had made more often than not.

Yes dad, I know I currently have a C in Algebra. Yes, dad, I know I can do anything if I apply myself, I’ll bring the textbook home and read ahead every night until my grade gets better. Yes, dad, I know Timmy Smith’s father is a piece of shit, and Dr. Jones didn’t get to be a doctor by running around with the idiots he went to high school with.  

Tick... tick... tick...

Surprisingly, these officers didn’t want much from me. One just stood around staring off into the distance at God knows what, the other sat on the couch asking Zs. and me questions. I can’t remember how many bloodied squares of toilet paper fell from my face like snowflakes from the sky during the interview, but I do remember the officer asking me if I was born in New Orleans (where my passport was issued), and asking Zs. what her occupation was. Our encounter with Novi Sad’s finest wasn’t anything like the hours-long interrogations I’d come to expect from watching too many true crime shows on television. I didn’t know if these guys had honed their interview skills by watching reruns of Columbo, or if, from behind their desks, they were just too worn out and disinterested to care. I imagined them like my dad, content at their keyboards or relive their glory days of kicking in doors and slapping handcuffs on supposed bad guys.

Satisfied with our answers that I lived of remittance from relatives abroad, and Zs. was a university student, the officers turned to leave. I couldn’t shake the notion that even though the leftover bloody toilet paper snowflakes seemed to fall from my face all at once -- out of relief that, like me, they no longer had to cover up what they’d been hiding -- one of the officers would catch sight a neglected school flyer, turn to me like Lieutenant Columbo, and say: “Just one more thing.”

I flashed back to an experience I had with my dad when I was about fifteen. He’d insisted on taking me somewhere I didn’t want to go. As I begrudgingly opened the passenger door to his black, beat up 1987 Cutlass Sierra S, fully expecting us to ride together in silence, he looked at me and said, out of nowhere: “Your mother tells me you’ve been saying fuck a lot.” I knew I was busted, so I had no choice but to come clean about my affinity for a certain four-letter word.

More than a dozen years after the confrontation about my love of fuckery, as the officers came closer to our apartment door, I could still see myself cracking under the slightest pressure of being asked just one more thing. In an instant, I thought my whole charade would come crashing down, and I’d have to tell the whole, unadulterated truth to yet another a cop:

Yes, officer, I’m teaching English in your country illegally. Yes, officer, the monthly transfers into my bank account aren’t enough to live on, even here. Yes officer, I fully intend to marry this psycho bit... I mean, uh... fine woman. 

I was so close to freedom from the inquisition, yet I had to remind myself that even as the doorknob turned, I would not be truly liberated until our apartment door had closed and the officers’ footsteps had faded down the hallway. Despite the years of practice I’d had with my dad, after our visit from Novi Sad’s boys in blue, I started feeling unsure of how long I could maintain my smokescreen of half-truths and one-word answers to authority figures. I began to entertain the idea of leaving Serbia before my next 90-day period came to an end. I knew full well that thanks to Zs. I had a fiancée visa which lasted a year, but after years of “tourist” trips across borders and back, 90 days had become my default measurement of time.

When such questions came from behind the glass that shielded one of my fellow countrymen at the U.S. Embassy in Belgrade, I started thinking that even they didn’t want me to stay. Zs. had to visit the embassy multiple times as part of the application process for the scholarship she would eventually win to study in the United States. I don’t remember why they called me over during one of her visits, but I do remember the man behind the glass looking at Zs., looking back and me, then asking, “Did you marry her yet?” 

I felt like I was on an episode of a popular “life unscripted” TV show where the contestants (if you can call them that) have 90 days to get married before one has to leave whichever country they’re in. 90 days isn’t enough time to know if a job’s a good fit, or if a commitment you made to drop extra pounds has become a lifestyle change, let alone if a person’s a good match to spend the rest of your life with. Sure, the contestants’ day-to-day activities, fights, and occasional intimate moments might make interesting fodder for the masses who’d rather watch navigate their lives instead of living their own, but you’d be hard-pressed to convince me that contestants’ lives didn’t really start until the cameras stopped. 

The producers of those so-called unscripted shows know this, but they’re still laughing all the way to the bank. They’re betting their audiences would prefer sitting back, cracking open a White Claw (or munching on a bowl of movie theater butter popcorn), and watching someone else’s relationship Hindenburg to working on themselves. it’s easier to indulge in the hard seltzer craze, pretend to care about koala colonies threatened Australian bushfires, or flex to your friends about how much you love your new sheets made from ethically-obtained cotton than it is to unplug the Wi-Fi and really try to fix your life. Zs.’s favorite “life unscripted” show was about brides-to-be trying to find the right wedding dress. I wonder why that was?

I know these shows exist because I’m just as guilty of watching them as anyone else. Some moments make me cringe, others make me cry, and a third grouping makes me want to yell at the television about what I hadn’t seen as much as what I had, thanks to some magical, manipulative editing. 

Perhaps the best approach is to take life one day at a time, whether you’re battling an addiction, trying to put on a pretty face for the camera, or take one off after the lights have gone down. Either way, the show must go on.

“I didn’t kill myself.” The synthetic voice said to me.

It took me a moment to comprehend what she had just said. I even checked the phone to make sure I didn’t hear her wrong. What the fuck was that supposed to mean? “You didn’t?” I repeated back to her questioningly.

“No.” I swear I could have heard some sorrow in the voice. Hell, I even felt it.

As hard as it was to comprehend what she said, the words got lost on their way out of my throat. “How did you die then?” I asked once I could.

“I don’t know.”

“How can you not know?” I asked. I was trying to not let the absurdity of the situation cause me to lash out. Key word: trying. “You are dead, right?”

“Yes, Eric.”

“But you don’t know how you died.”

“I can’t remember.” Beth said. The air depressed further. I could picture her weeping next to me. I sighed, turning to face the empty seat next to me. Sometimes I need to remind myself that I’m talking to an actual person; someone who actually feels.

“I’m sorry.” I said gently. “What do you remember?”

It took her a moment to gather herself. “I remember calling you. I remember begging you to take me back. I remember telling you I wanted to kill myself. And I remember you telling me you didn’t care.”

If there was any moment of my life I wish I could take back, it was that. “Then what?”

“Nothing.” She said. “The next thing I remember was standing in your apartment, feeling like I just woke up from a nightmare.”

“The morning you told me I was going to die.”

“Yes.” She answered. “I was angry, Eric, and so scared. I knew something was wrong because you couldn’t see me, no matter how hard I tried.”

“That’s more than a year, Beth.” I said. “If you don’t even remember your death, then how do you know it wasn’t suicide?”

“I can’t explain it, Eric.”

“Try.” I persisted.

“I don’t know. It’s...” She paused between texts. “It’s a feeling.”

“A feeling?”

“Yes, Eric. I don’t know how to explain it, but I just know I didn’t kill myself. And I’m sure I wouldn’t, no matter how much I wanted to.”

“Why not? You threatened it enough times!” I said, pulling back when I heard the hostility in my voice.

“Katie...” She said. “I couldn’t leave her alone.”

We ended the conversation a short while after. As much as I wanted to help her, I needed some time to process what I had learned. We talked more during my morning commute, as I was thinking more clearly. I’ll spare the exact conversation, but I have clarified a few things. The time between our last conversation before her death and the text that started this whole mess is a blank. She doesn’t remember how she died. She can’t explain the strong feeling that it wasn’t suicide. I had asked if it was the same as how she knew I was going to die, but she said that was different.

Either way, she was adamant about how she died--or rather, how she didn’t die. So if she didn’t commit suicide, then what happened that night?

There were a few ways to try and find out what happened to Beth that night. First, I checked online for any articles about her. Suicides aren’t really reported on, especially in a city the size of mine. It didn’t turn up much, just one item in a list that stated she committed suicide, not how. Now I could ask Kaitlyn or her parents, but that’s a terrible idea for multiple reasons. It’s a guaranteed way to get my teeth kicked in.

I left work early on Friday, much to the displeasure of my boss. I gave an excuse for a last minute psych appointment. They bought it but I could tell they weren’t happy. After a quick stop, I commuted back to visit my city’s police department. Like the church I used to visit, it hadn’t changed much. I checked in with the officer at reception. A quick phone call later, she let me inside with a pass. I found I was getting looks from the officers and detectives as I walked the building. Some with casual greetings, some with looks of very mild suspicion. Some gave me knowing nods as I passed, like they thought they knew why I was there. After navigating the cubicle maze, I found the person I was there to see. “Uncle Rob.” I greeted.

“Eric!” He said as he stood to give me a rough hug. Rob wasn’t related to me. He was more of the close family friend kind of uncle. He was my dad’s partner on the force. He was even working with him the day he died. Since then he remained close to my family. He’s even been off and on convincing me to be a cop, which I find myself declining every time. Now Uncle Rob was a detective; just the person I needed.

“I brought you something.” I told him as I handed him a paper bag with a bottle in it.

He pulled out the specialty root beer I picked up for him on the way there. Uncle Rob had become something of a root beer connoisseur ever since he started drinking them as a substitute to handle an alcohol problem. It showed in his gut. “Well thank you, Eric! What brings you here?”

“Well,” I said as I grabbed an empty chair from the next cubicle, “I was hoping you could tell me about a case from last year.”

“Depends on what you want to know. Which case?” He asked as he brought his monitor back to life.

“Bethany McDonnell.”

He stopped typing when I said the name. He turned in his chair to give me a long stare. “Eric.” He sighed. “This isn’t healthy. You need to let this go.”

“Uncle Rob,” I said gently. “Please.”

He thought about it for a moment, then turned back to his computer. “If anyone asks, I’m nurturing your interest in the force. Just don’t ask me anything that would get me in trouble.”

“You got it.” I said as I moved to watch over his shoulder. We spent the next few minutes going over the basics of the case.

In July of 2016, a 9-1-1 call came in from the McDonnell residence. The caller reported that she just found her sister dead. Police and medical were dispatched to the scene where they found a 23-year-old female with what appeared to be a self-inflicted stab wound to her chest. Autopsy found that the knife pierced her heart, killing her instantly. By the time her sister had found her, she had been dead for more than a day.

Something was off. If the reports were accurate, her death came straight out of a Shakespeare play. Sure, she was dramatic. But it didn’t feel right. “With a death like that, wouldn’t you investigate it as a possible homicide?”

“You’re right,” Uncle Rob replied, “and we did. Remember?” In fact, I did remember. Uncle Rob had the case up until they brought me in for questioning as a possible suspect. He recused himself at that point, giving the case to another detective. Probably thought I would be a conflict of interest if they found anything.

“And what did they find?”

“Well, there were no signs in the house of forced entry or foul play. We interviewed everyone close to her, checked leads. Every alibi checked out, including yours.”

“And there was nothing else?”

He raised his eyebrow at that. “No, there wasn’t.”

“And the case was ruled a suicide and closed.” I said as I sat back down.

“Right.” He confirmed as he turned to face me.

I needed to think for a moment. “Hey, you have anything to drink here?”

“Yeah,” He said as he pulled his wallet to check for change, “Dr. Pepper still?”

“You know it.” I said. I waited until he stepped down the hall, then slid over to his computer. I pulled the report back up. I knew time was short and I was breaking a few laws, so I quickly brought my phone up to snap a few pictures of it before minimizing it again. Uncle Rob came back with the soda and we spent some time chatting.

“Hey Eric,” He said as I turned to leave. “You don’t know anything new about the McDonnell case, do you?” He peered at me with suspicious eyes. I could tell I was talking to the detective, not my uncle.

I decided to lighten the goodbye with a joke. “Not unless you count ghosts.”

He kept his stare for a moment, then we both laughed. “Tell your mother I said hi.”

“So if I didn’t kill myself...” Beth speculated.

“Then that only leaves one possibility.” I finished. “Is there anyone who could have done this?” She didn’t answer me. “Beth?” I could feel the sorrow in the air. Once again, I pictured Beth weeping next to me. “What is it?” I asked gently.

“Yes.” She said. “I know someone.”

“Who?” I asked. Once again no immediate answer. I looked over to the passenger seat where I imagined she was sitting. Whatever it was wasn’t easy to say.

“I can’t.” She said after a while.

“Why not?”

“I just can’t!” The words actually came out as a shout. I wasn’t sure if the app could actually do that.

I thought I felt the emotions in the air. Sorrow, apprehension... Shame. I held my hand for her to take, a gesture I wasn’t sure she could appreciate. The air around it turned cold. “It’s okay,” I said to her, “you can tell me.”

It took her a minute, but I was giving her whatever time she needed. “My dad.”

That took me by surprise, despite my recent run in with him. “What makes you think your dad could have done this?”

“My dad...” The phone said as I heard a sob. “He was not a good man.”

“What do you mean?” I said as gently as I could.

Another pause. “He did things... To Mom... To me...”

My jaw clenched as she said that. I tried not to let the discomfort show. She needed me to be the composed one. “Did he abuse you?”

“Yes.” She answered. The air was heavy.

My next question took some effort. “Sexually?” My gut tightened in anticipation.

“Yes.” She said, the voice cracking.

We sat in silence. I didn’t think there was anything I could say to make this better. I couldn’t even comprehend the things she went through. “Did you ever tell anyone? A counselor? The police?”

“No,” she answered, “he would have just found some way to get away with it, like everything else he did. And then things would have just gotten worse for us.”

“Us?” I asked. “Did he... Was Kaitlyn...”

“No. He left her alone as long as I was there, and as long as I didn’t fight him. That’s why I never moved out.” She said. “I didn’t want to leave her alone with him.”

Now it made sense. No matter how bad things were, she wouldn’t have killed herself because she didn’t want to leave Kaitlyn at the mercy of their father. It also explained other things. Her fondness of super heroes. Her fantasy of a knight in shining armor coming to her rescue. Her obsession with me. She wished for someone just, who stood up for what was right, who wanted to do the right thing. She thought I was that person, from the moment I broke up that fight. She wanted.. No. She needed me to be the person who would take her and Kaitlyn away from her personal hell.

I despised myself at that moment. I wish I had seen the signs. I wish I had done something. I broke down. I didn’t have the right to be the strong one anymore. I wept harder than the day I found out about her death. “I’m sorry!” I said in broken words. I’m sorry...

That was on Friday. I took some much needed time to process everything. I didn’t do anything yesterday, and I spent the majority of today thinking of how to write this. Tomorrow, I’m going to take a risk and talk to Beth’s sister. If Sean McDonnell did murder his daughter, Katie might know something. If nothing else, she might know something about the abuse, and be willing to help get the bastard off the streets. I’ll update you all when I can.

Before I go, there was one more thing. Something I found on the report while reviewing it at home, and it tears me apart. In the additional notes for the autopsy report. Beth was pregnant when she died.

“What do you want to be when you grow up?”

Logan thrummed his fingers against the edge of his desk. It was a standard question, one repeated to him by relatives and teachers alike. But Logan, aged seven, squirmed in his seat with his arm waving above his head. He was desperate to be called upon to answer. When his teacher asked, he proudly chirped back the same answer he always had, with a grin too wide for his face. “Batman, just like my dad.”

It always drew a chorus of whispers and oooohs from his classmates. A smattering of giggles, an eye roll from his teacher.

“There are no such thing as superheroes.” A girl sneered from across the table.

“But he is! He fights bad guys like Batman. And he drives fast in his own car. And, and, and! He even works with Alfred! But he isn’t a butler. He’s the coolest. And he even has a uniform too, with all the badges and   ”

“Logan.” His teacher interjected gently. “Your father is a detective, isn’t he?”

“I guess that’s what some people call him. But I call him Batman. It’s a way cooler name than Major Crimes Detective.”

“Just stay here, bud.”

“But I don’t want to go to camp.” Logan sulked, dropping the duffel bag he had slung over his shoulder onto the concrete with a soft thud. Whilst the other Fourth graders tearfully parted with their parents for the week, Logan was adamant that camp wasn’t where kids like him went. First of all, only one parent had come to drop him off. Only one parent was ever in the picture, for as long as he could remember. His dad was everything he wanted to be when he grew up. A hero.

“Every kid goes to camp, Logan. It’s fun.”

“But why can’t I just go to work with you?” Logan couldn’t help the way his voice shook, or the way the tears glistened in his eyes.

His father smiled at him, so warmly, it made him more resolute to keep the tears at bay. Logan curled his fists by his sides and blinked the tears back. He squeezed his eyes shut, refusing to give up.

That was when he felt the frames settle on his face. Far too large for him, slipping off his nose. But his dad’s aviators didn’t need to fit. His eyes blinked open, small tears sliding down his cheeks as his fingers held them in place against his face.

“So no one can see you cry.” His dad said with a smile and a ruffle of his hair.

Logan couldn’t help but smile.

A week at camp passed in a blink of an eye. Though, tinges of homesickness did strike at night. He warded them away, bundled in blankets in his bunk, tears hidden under the covers with his aviators in his hands.

But he practically bounced off the bus that arrived back at school. He waved goodbyes to his friends who were collected by their parents. He couldn’t spot his dad amongst the crowds of parents. Late. It wasn’t unheard of, especially with a job as demanding as a detective. So Logan settled on the curb, eyes cast toward the street, waiting to see the familiar patrol car. Maybe his dad would even flash his lights. Fingers curled around the arms of his aviators, Logan waited, passing the time by deciding which stories he’d tell his dad first.

An hour passed.

By this time, only his teachers were left waiting with him. Not a single patrol car had passed.

Two hours.

They had called his home, his dad’s mobile, with no answer. Dusk was setting in, and Logan shivered as the warmth of the day receded.

At three hours, he had been taken into the reception of the school. Calls being made every 10 minutes to his dad’s contact numbers, with no response. His teacher had stayed by his side, listening attentively as Logan began telling the camp stories he was eager to tell his dad. Legs swinging, knees bouncing, hair still a mess from falling asleep on the bus.

Finally, a call was returned. Logan eyed his teacher as she answered the call.

“Yes, is he in? I’m with his son, Logan.”

A long pause.

Logan caught the minute crease that formed on her brow. The way she sat straighter. And the way her eyes fell on him. Like she was shocked.

“But he has been at school camp this week.”

Another pause.

His legs stopped swinging. His knees stopped bouncing.

“I see. Thank you.”

The call ended and Logan stared at her, waiting for her to relay the information. But he could tell she was nervous, from her posture to her hesitation and nervous smile. He truly was his father’s son.

“Logan. Is there anyone else who can pick you up? Your mom? How about any grandparents?”

“But where is my dad?”

“I’m not sure, Logan. But I think it’s best if-” “But he’s still coming, right? If I go now, he’ll think I’m missing.” “I promise, we’ll keep calling, but we need someone to come and take you home for now.”

Logan paused. Maybe his dad was on an important case.

“We could call my grandma?” “I think that would be best.”

His grandparents had come to collect him soon after. He had always loved his time in their house, usually long afternoons full of playing detective with grandma, and being snuck lollies by grandpa.

But this evening was different, the mood more tense. He didn’t have to play detective to know something was wrong. Particularly when he was put to bed in the guest bedroom, his grandma evading all his questions about his dad.

Like a good detective, he knew that good intel formed the base of a strong case. His dad had taught him that. So, he tiptoed out of his bed, catching sight of the lights still on down the hall, in his grandparent’s bedroom.

He approached the closed door as silently as he could, before pressing his ear to the door.

“   But it’s not his fault! It’s unfair to him.”

“I know   ”

“That bastard   ”

“   I know.”

“He left his son at a bus stop!”

He could hear his grandma faintly crying through the door.

“What are we supposed to do? We can’t raise him, we’re   “ “We have no other choice, my love. We have to try.”

Logan backed away from the door. Perhaps good intel was a burden.

Back in the bed, buried under the covers, his eyes flooded with tears that couldn’t be held back, no matter how hard he tried.

Logan refused to believe it. His dad was good. His dad loved him. They were the inseparable duo, partners in solving crime.

Fingers trembled as they held his father’s glasses in his hands, and cried.

‘Missing’ was the word that was used to describe the case.

A missing person’s case.

His dad, missing.

But Logan knew it was far more than simply missing. The way his grandma didn’t even act like she expected her son-in-law to return. There was something they weren’t telling him.

He needed to know, if he was going to solve the case. To find his dad. And he refused to give up.

He’d ask questions to the detectives he knew, ones who came to visit him occasionally. He took notes in a spiral bound book, the back of his maths book. It had become his official investigation book, like one he had seen his dad use. Every single detective had said “we’re still looking”. But how could a whole team of detectives, looking, not find him? They were looking in the wrong places, he had deduced.

He held out hope that if he himself couldn’t find his dad, his dad, the best detective there was, would find his way back to him. At least, that’s what he’d tell his grandparents, as they watched him spend hours waiting by windows, looking for the flashes of red and blue lights that would prove him right.

Logan was fourteen when his grandmother fell ill. She wasn’t quick to tell him, but it wasn’t long until the pseudo-detective out the pieces together.

Perhaps some mysteries were best left unsolved.

Another person slowly left his life. Her mind went slowly. Some days were better than others, but it wasn’t long until she wasn’t there at all. At least he got to say goodbye.

His grandfather, distraught and frail in his own old age, had to be moved into a retirement home.

“FUCK YOU TOO.”

“THAT’S IT. GET OUT.”

Logan slammed the wire door behind him. It rattled in its hinges, holding back the seething woman behind him.

“You have no where to go because no one wanted you. You’ll be back and you’ll be sorry!” She screamed after him. But he paid no mind. Seventeen and in his third foster home, he couldn’t stay in that house any longer.

They all treated him like he was damaged, like he was deluded and didn’t know what was best for himself. They limited his freedom, setting curfews and ridiculous rules for someone as independent as him. Not to mention the way they all told him his endless pursuit to find his father pointless. A waste of time. Obsessive. That his father had left him at that bus stop and he was probably a dirty cop. That he’d be dead by now.

He couldn’t listen to their lies anymore. They didn’t know his father.

Logan shoved his fists in the pockets of his jacket, aviators on, as he marched away back onto the streets.

Chapter 33-Time

I got off the phone with Ana and tried to study while keeping Aidan occupied. Jake wandered into the room later. "Hey, what's the deal between you and Cassie?"

"Huh?" I asked, looking up. Aidan took the opportunity to steal one of my pens, who knows what kind of havoc he would've wrecked if he'd succeeded in making off with it, but I caught him, and took the pen back.

"I haven't seen her around lately… usually she's around almost every other day," he shrugged, looking bored as he grabbed a baseball off his desk, and then flopped down on his bed.

"We got into an argument." I replied shortly, not eager to rehash the mess Cassie and I had become.

He began tossing it up in the air and then catching it. Aidan reached for it silently but I figured as long as he wasn't wailing, he'd be fine for now. "Are you over it yet?" he asked absent mindedly as Aidan stood on my bed.

I thought for a long moment and caught Aidan as he tried to leap off my bed. "I guess." I replied. I really was too… like I said before; I'm not really one to hang on to personal shit. I sighed and then looked down, mumbling, "It's complicated."

"Hmm," he mumbled and then threw the ball at me.

"Ow!" I shouted after it hit me in the chest (it was a baseball, not a softball, all right?)

"Bitch," he taunted back.

I tossed my books to the side and tackled him. He laughed as I tried to land a punch on him. Aidan laughed from my bed.

I heard someone knocking on the door in the other room and got off Jake but not before a good knee in the stomach. He grunted hard. "That's probably your mom." I said, picking up Aidan, who had been reaching up to me anyway.

We walked into the other room and found that Ben had opened the door. The full clan and Mrs. C trooped inside. "You don't mind if they watch TV with you for a few minutes, do you, Ben?" she asked breezily.

"I uh… I've got… I have some homework to do." Ben stuttered around before escaping quickly. He has the fear of Mrs. C Adam possesses too.

"Mama!" Aidan cooed, reaching out from me to her.

"Hi baby!" Mrs. C ecstatically greeted him back, taking him from me. "Did you have a good time with Erik today?" Aidan grinned back at her, clearly recognizing only my name from the sentence, but oh well. "Was he good?" she asked me.

"Yeah, sure." I shrugged. "He was only a little bit of a terror."

"Good," she smiled and then turned on Jake. "I like what you've done with the place," she said dryly.

"Mom, don't start." Jake groaned.

"You never pick up this place, Jacob, and I'm tired of bringing your brothers and sisters here to show them what a mess their eldest brother lives in!" she began ragging on him. He tried to walk away from her but she followed him into the kitchen, ranting, "Don't you walk away from me, young man, you really ought to…" she continued ranting about the mess of the house.

"Hey Erik." Julia smiled at me as she picked up the diaper bag.

"Hey Jules." I smiled back and then asked, "How was shopping?"

She gave me the look of death.

"That bad?" I laughed slightly.

"Shopping with my brothers and sisters is like shopping for a wild zoo," she hissed at me, looking beyond weary.

"I can only imagine." I winced at the mental picture.

"Yeah well it was forty times worse then what you're imagining so don't even talk to me," she replied, putting her hand up in an effort to tell me off.

"Awww." I put my arm around her and gave her a brotherly hug. "Cheer up, kid. It's over."

"Right after I get a nap," she mumbled back though she smiled a little.

"How's the boyfriend?" I asked her, letting go and sitting down on one of the bar stools.

"We were just about to do the dishes." Jake told his mom, who snorted in reply, clearly unconvinced.

"He's good… going on a year now," she replied with a happy smile and then frowned a little. "How did you know about him?"

"I heard Jake ranting about him to Adam at one point." I replied with a shrug.

"Really?" Julia asked, looking surprised.

"Something about how the guy is a "huge douche bag." I replied with a wry smile. "And if he so much as touches you in a way you don't want, he'll… well, make sure he doesn't have kids."

"That sounds like Jake," she smiled back with a quick eye roll.

"He's always had quite the way with words." I answered with a small smile.

She smiled back and rolled her eyes again. "You're saying this in reference to the guy who told my mom that the stereo she bought for him last Christmas was, "Totally awesome"?"

"I see your point." I pointed at her thoughtfully.

"Mom, I think it's time we get the kids home." Julia finally interrupted the lecturing Mrs. Carlson. Jake, who looked like he was at the end of his rope, smiled faintly at his sister in relief. "The kids look like they're about to pass out."

"Probably." Mrs. Carlson agreed and then turned back to Jake. With only a sharp sigh of exasperation, she turned away, and started gathering the kids.

I yawned the next morning and shut off my alarm. Jake didn't move from his bed as I slowly sat up, rubbing the sleep from my eyes. It sucked, getting up at 7 AM to get to 8 AM class but it was the only way I could get in class and work in the same day. I usually grabbed another hour of sleep between school and work anyway.

I headed off to school after a shower, chewing on the last apple we had. In fact, Jake had been right; we were running low on food.

I locked my car at school and ambled off to class. Traffic had been light so I still had a good 20 minutes before classes started.

As I ambled along leisurely, I caught sight of a familiar face. I squinted, not believing my eyes. Nope… it was Cassie and she was headed in my direction. She hadn't seen me yet; she was still walking in her usual decaffeinated shuffle.

I found myself scrambling to figure out what to do about her. Should I talk to her? Could she handle talking to me? Should I go in another direction? She still hadn't seen me… no Erik, don't wuss out. But maybe it would be better to wuss-

She looked up and our eyes met. Caught. I felt my stomach drop as her face fell at the sight of me. Her face fell, there was no questions about it… she looked like she was on her way to her own funeral. "Hey." I said once she was in hearing distance, not about to not acknowledge her.

"Hey," she said quietly, not slowing as we approached each other. She smiled a little and then stunned me by passing without stopping.

I stopped and turned around, watching her walk away. She didn't look back, not once. Well she wasn't about to get away with that. "So that's how it's going to be?" I called after her.

She stopped and turned around. I expected anger or an annoyed expression on her face but instead there was the same pained expression I'd seen the last time we'd spoken. The expression that tore me apart inside every time I saw it. "Well what do you want me to say, Erik?" she asked me quietly, voice carrying in the cool morning air to me.

"I thought we were friends." I said quietly, putting my hands into my pockets.

She stared at me for a long moment before answering, "Just give me some time," she turned and walked away without another word or looking back.

"I thought I did." I mumbled crankily to myself.

Oh, who was I kidding? Who was I kidding, thinking that if I gave her "time," our friendship would return to normal? Things had changed, probably irreparably, between us… maybe one day it could be fixed.

I walked into the lecture hall and sat down in the middle. I glanced around leisurely at the 200 other people who were all taking their seats as well. Since it was second semester, people had stopped trying to impress each other, so everyone was dressed in sweats. I sighed and casually watched people, waiting for the professor to come in, and start class.

The three girls in front of me were having a lengthy discussion about the girl in the middle's hair. They picked it up, snapped their gum, and discussed it. I felt myself roll my eyes as I looked away… I thought I had left those kind of girls back in high school.

I glanced to the left and my eyes fell on a couple quietly whispering. His arm was around her shoulders, bringing her close to him, and they shared a private smile after he finished telling her whatever it was that he was talking about. I felt my hands clench into fists with the longing that suddenly swept through me. I forced myself to look away and found my professor coming in, not a minute too late. I had never been more glad to see the man in my life.

Jake punched me awake the next morning. "What?" I grumbled. "Did my alarm not go off?"

"Not yet." Jake replied. "Get up."

"Why?" I whined. "It's early." I knew what was coming… "Get up, you whiny little bitch."

"Get up right now." Jake thrust my sweatshirt in my face.

I suddenly realized that his voice was quiet and serious, a rarity when it came to Jake. I opened my eyes a fraction of an inch more, and squinted at him. "What's going on?" I asked, still half asleep but slowly awakening. I checked my alarm clock… it was 5:45 AM. "What the hell? It's not even 6 AM yet! Why the hell-" I began to grumble.

"Erik, cops are here," he interrupted me seriously. "They want to talk to you."

Now I was awake. "What?" I jumped straight up in bed and shoved my head into my sweatshirt.

"I was up, getting a drink of water, and there was a knock on the door… they asked for you."

"Why the hell…" I began, confused, and then my thoughts went to Ana. "Shit. Is it Ana?" I demanded.

"I don't know, dude, they just asked me if you were here, so I came, and got you," he answered me seriously.

"Shit." I jumped out of bed and ran into the other room.

Two officers in uniform stood there, one talking quietly into the radio on his shoulder. "Erik Masterson?" the one on the left asked me.

"Yeah?" I asked, acutely registering my voice was higher then usual. "What's going on? What is it? Is it my sister?"

"I'm Officer Windsor and this is Officer Kenton," the first cop spoke, gesturing between himself and his partner. "You should probably sit down for this."

"I'll stand. What the hell is going on?" I answered coldly, hands clenching into fists. If they didn't tell me soon, I'd-

"Are you the son of Ellen Chase?" he asked me.

Startled, I stared blankly between the two officers. Mom? They were asking me questions about Mom? "Yeah… she's my mom," oh great, what had she done now?

"When was the last time you spoke with your mother?" Officer Kenton spoke up.

I tried to think back but couldn't really think in my confusion. "I don't know… a week ago or so?"

"When she was hospitalized for her DUI?" Officer Windsor asked.

"Yes. What's going on?" I asked. "Did she leave rehab again?"

"I think you might want to sit down," he repeated himself gravely.

"No. What the fuck is going on?" I snapped back, voice deathly quiet, at the end of my rope.

"Your mother's car was found in the back of a Target parking lot… we found it on our patrol of the premises at midnight. We found your mother inside," he said slowly. I felt my stomach clench. Officer Kenton looked away as Officer Windsor finally said, "She's dead, Erik. She shot herself in the head."

MERCURY MIGHT HAVE BEEN ON MY SIDE PART 3 CONT.

         Welcome back for Part 3 continuing. I mentioned that this will be the most emotional part for me, since I am going to bang out 2 instances, where parts of my soul were being murdered brutally. Please know that I am writing this by the pool side, so at least if I cry, I can hop in a jacuzzi right afterwards. I have tucked away this person who I was, she’s folded up nicely in a dark corner of my brain where I can let her rest for a bit. Who I am now is taking over.

           I left off with my aunt Tulip getting me from the precinct. To rewind a little bit, I was still waiting for her, and when I got my phone back I still had a little juice to update my friends in the group chat. SweetNest, told me she contacted Lucifer, and I saw their conversation on messenger. SweetNest asked him if he had heard from me, and he responded so fucking nasty to her. “Sorry everyone from her side is going to get shit from me . . . we are going to put a restraining order on her. . . she kicked down the door and maced our roommate now she is in the hospital. . . idk I am going to check on b . . . my lawyer advises me not to talk to her party . . .”

       SweetNest responds “ I don’t think Beez would use mace for no reason (she repeated this 3 times) . . . Can I get your lawyers information? “ (yeah douche bag we know you’re lying and most likely did not talk to a fucking lawyer.) - - - Reading the text messages - I wish I had the screen shots, but then again I glad I don’t, because reading what he was saying felt like a shot to the face. How dare Lucifer, make me sound so violent, so fucking scary like I’m a fucking monster when I was trying to defend myself because he didn’t want to protect me. I  have been with Lucifer for 5 years, 3 of which we lived together and 1 where we were exes. Living with an ex is the most draining shit of your life, especially when you are such good partners. We have shared many laughs, many experiences, many ups, and downs . . . for him to pretend like he didn’t know me. To try to depict an image of me which is not true. I am most likely guilty of the same, as I saw him as a King. I looked at him and thought he was soo handsome, intelligent and strong. The way he was telling SweetNest about me was so dreadful and I finally had to release a secret, I never wanted to admit.

     Tulip finally showed up, and in between our conversations and the fucking cop who put his number in my phone passing by and she thought he was hot, which he was but still a fucking douche. I look up to the ceiling trying to tilt my tears back inside my eyeballs, and trying so hard to swallow this lump in my throat to say  “Tulip, I am finally going to admit this, Lucifer has hit me, one of the main reasons he moved back is because our last fight he punched me in the stomach. He has choked me, and the last time he choked me he whispered in my ear,‘You have lived a good 25 yrs of life’. It wasn’t the first time he has done that.

     Let me take you to the past a little bit where I was born because it could have potentially saved my mother and biological fathers relationship. So already being brought into this world with not proper intentions. God only knows what my mom was going through while I was in the womb (which I totally believe affects a babies soul) Do I believe I was a love baby? Absolutely fucking not, my father was an abusive alcoholic cunt who did coke too, probably and most likely other things as well. I have dealt with his abuse on top of my mothers. Maybe it was because I looked like the fucker burnt to a crisp with curly hair, but as I was growing up, whenever I would get punished even as I got older my mom would punch me in the head a lot, my dad liked the belt. At least everyday I can remember just getting fucking whipped or pounded on by a fist. EVERYDAY, I was doing something wrong, I felt unwanted, why was I not dying yet, why was my body always fighting the pain. I could never cry about it either, I had to stay tough. I still loved though, I saw this documentary on Vice about shelters(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUfNbNBFwRI) and this home less girl says “If you hit me or you hurt me, I forgot and forgave you just like that, I don’t understand judgmental people, I don’t understand at all, like I think they are dumb, like they don’t know how to solve a problem.” I fucking broke. Because I did that, and thought exactly the same,I still loved my mom, I still loved my dad, and every other person who has hit me in between my life. It was normal no?  I thought by the time I was 16, I was understanding what abuse was, and how it worked, I was starting to feel resentment so I mentally killed off my biological father who left our life anyway when my mom finally divorced him after 9/11 My mother and I are in a better spot, sort of. She has her demons that she refuses to face. After what we went through, I thought I would NEVER be with a man who hits me. & here I was forgiving, and still loving the fuck out of Lucifer, because I still believed he loved me too.

       Our relationship started off. . . amazing, we connected, had to fall out due to differences in what I wanted and what I saw him as, but we still reconnected. Effortlessly too might I add,  I didn’t even see him as a potential partner at first, if anything we were just a casual fling, and then I kinda wanted it to end because I was ready for something serious so I need to take a break to figure out what I wanted. Instead of what I actually thought it was, him choosing me and him coming to me ! He would buy me things show up and make plans, he was making it adamant that he wanted to be with me. Even after our first big fight, when I first cried in front of him, actually holding it back because he got me so angry, he didn’t want to leave, and then he finally left. He still kept coming back to me, and my life and honestly I was fighting it because I didn’t know if I wanted him either, but the more he showed interest in me, the more I genuinely felt he wanted to be with me. We would argue but he made up for it 20x better, he would take me shopping, treat me like a Queen, massage my feet, support me, motivate me and this was the person I was falling in love with. . As time went on he admitted that it felt like me talking to him about what I wanted and how we should cut something that isn’t real was an ultimatum. . . fucker what? I have always been honest with my intentions.  I felt so awful because I thought everything was REAL.  Till little by little he was doing and saying things that were disrespectful , getting away with gas lighting, and knowing what tactics and my weaknesses  that would trigger me into doing annoying , corny fucked up girl shit, Maybe in another blog I will mention how and what lead to the abuse, whats types, and how his Jekyll and Hyde personas were just , making me look at myself in the mirror and be like “Who the fuck is this person?”

        So back to admitting to my aunt what has / was happening and I don’t know why Lucifer is making this so fucking miserable for me. My arresting officer told me to see this lady in the office precinct, after I told him I still need to get my stuff, at least in peace. This lady was actually so fucking rude to me and tried to accuse me of “oh you just want to do this for retaliation” I got up and just fucking left. My aunt actually turned me around, then the lady was like “You see if she didn’t have that attitude I could let her know how to do a Order of Protection” - sick bitch. Heres the thing, it still isn’t her fault she spoke to me that way, playing mental mind games, it’s the criminal justice systems fault, believe that. I was talking to the cops for an hour trying to explain to them this whole mess, they told me to call the cops when I get home to get my shit, so I could get 20 minutes to an hr to get my shit. Tulip, and Tulips friend Alex ( who was actually besties with my biological father) and I waited a good hr and 1/2 outside the apartment, my aunt agreed she could take some things to her place. The cops finally show up and then when they get here my aunt speaks to them and the cop looks at me rolls his eyes, and says “Yeah I remember her.” I went so close to the car looking at this fuckers face, to recognize him as one of the cops that I called the first time, the one I thought earlier hit his wife too. -  the way he was talking to the two older ladies I mentioned in part 1 ? Or 2? I forget. Mother fucker here we go, he tells my aunt how I am uncooperative and shit, and once again I CALLED THE COPS, for them to make me feel like a fucking moron for doing so. I open the door, it reaks of weed,  and three stuffed black trash bags are full of my things, Diana goes into the other room and gets the TV. The crackheads are cracked out and shook. Lucifer then walks in “Um hello excuse me, thats my fucking TV” I look at him. The king that I saw in him, the man that I thought one day is going to be one of the most successful men I know, was replaced by a high asshole, who looked musty and miserable as fuck. He said “Choke who, who’s been choked!?” She confronted him about the bruises she has seen on me and how she didn’t call the cops either. Then he finally shut up and she told the cops on how he told me to come back the other day, then tries to say I’m a robber ! “Fucking manipulative shit, abusive men like you do!” Surprisingly for a minute moment the cops were on my side about things, telling Lucifer that he wasn’t even here when I called them the first time. B I know for a fact was jealous that I did have my aunt who was fighting for me, and I know she felt the sting that I am fucking loved while she feels at her loneliness, and can’t even fight for herself - even with her Shrek physique.

     When I finally had shit packed up still not everything, my books, my dresser filled with clothes, paper work, shoes were still left there. So I had to make one more fucking trip and I hated knowing I had to come back. Meanwhile, Lucifer just looks at me, from the door in between the lions that protected the door while I was  in the back of the car, he was waving good bye and smiling, proud that he destroyed me. I tilt my head forward putting my palms to my eyes, elbows to knees and just cried, releasing everything, feeling like a broken angel being taunted by demons dancing around me in a circle.
