Oh God I don't know if this will read as coherent because my thoughts about Showtime are all over the place. But I'll try to format this the best I can

✨Showtime HCs! ✨

Their relationship starts when they start spending time together.

(The reason why they do so could vary. In Supervised Machine Learning's case, Pomni becomes something of a "tutor" to Caine; They discover that they work well together, and the other's company can be quite pleasant!).

So Pomni and Caine build a weird, but comforting friendship, and all is well.

Then the feelings appear.

Caine is the first to realize he fell in love.

It sounds illogical but hear me out… it'd be really funny--

Ok no seriously I think Caine can actually feel. Keyword "can". He's very much still a machine and it shows in the pilot. But like his inspiration (AM), Caine is also a rogue AI. Whatever his programming originally intended him to do, he probably doesn't follow it as closely now as back when he was created (which is a whole other post).

Caine knows what love is and the extend it can go, since the Moon is so open about her feelings. He just doesn't like the Moon back specifically haha (sorry Moon) :}

All this to say, I do believe this is within the realm of possibility for him. (Not that it's ever gonna happen towards anyone in the show. These are just wishful shippy thoughts).

He might not recognize it as love at first, because it manifests in such a different way from his one reference point.

His friendship with Pomni had gone through phases.

When they first met, he continuously touched her with no concern for how she felt.

Learning from and about Pomni herself led him to come to respect her boundaries (and becoming mindful of everyone else's).

Then they're close friends, and gradually, Pomni does not mind his regular wacky, touchy-feely self. So Caine acts as he had always done before.

Caine expresses his love for Pomni with physical gestures and his undivided attention.

When they teleport to travel to other places, he holds her close so she doesn't get too dizzy; he pats her head to reassure her; he touches her arm to get her attention; he grabs her hands when he's excited about her ideas; he holds eye contact for prolonged periods of time; and he touches, and touches, and touches, and touches.

It's selfish, and so he keeps it buried in his deepest 0's and 1's. But he'd like to keep hanging out with Pomni, having her in his sight, and feel the texture of her gloved hands until the end of time.

Despite all this, to him, virtually nothing changed.

What? He's spending time with Pomni as he'd always been doing, and behaving as he'd always behaved!

It's Bubble of all people that has to point out that, "Hey boss. I think you WANT her!"

Absurd. Nonsense. Preposterous! It is merely a relationship of mutual support and affection between a ringmaster and his trusted, former-human companion. Nothing more.

(Declaring his love to her unprompted didn't ever cross his mind, so there's no way it could be that. Is there?)

Caine finds out that yes, there is.

Pomni had always been a nervous wreck, but her mind state becomes more manageable over time. She eventually adjusts to the circus life like everyone else did.

"Accepting" her fate is a different story. The will to escape, to remember, never really leaves. She's just more careful about it.

So when she starts working with Caine - to improve life so people don't go abstracting anymore, and hopefully find a definitive exit - she's not expecting to end up liking her time with him.

Not that she'd absolutely hate it, either. He's… "okay"… Just-- outlandish, loud, he keeps invading her personal space, he keeps touching her, and it makes her die a little every time.

If he's up to listening, though… it can't be that bad, right?

Turns out that no, it wasn't that bad.

Yes, he is outlandish, loud, he keeps invading her personal space and touching her. But she explains what she means to him, clearly and patiently, and he makes an effort to do better. An actual effort.

Sometimes he'd misinterpret what she meant - the ambiguity of human language - and the new games would go horribly. But little by little, his efforts make life overall better. Something reminiscent of actual, real life, the one they've all forcibly left behind.

And he tries, and he tries, and Pomni finds herself enjoying the process as much as the good results.

Pomni likes Caine's eagerness to learn. His enthusiastic attitude borders on silly, and the absurdity makes her laugh on occasion. When faced with the prospect of a "real" exit, she loves his upbeat optimism.

When she's not hanging out with Ragatha, Jax, Gangle, Zooble and Kinger, she begins to enjoy spending quality time with Caine.

Each one of their hang outs is a new surprise. They make a picnic in the tallest mountain exactly in between day and night. They learn to dance - while floating in the air. "Since you asked, here's a DIGITAL camera! Let's take pictures of the Void for one tenth of a second at a time!"

Sometimes he just comes by Pomni's room, and they end up losing track of time. Just chatting about how things have been, what they could be, and what to do next. Ideas and ideas and ideas.

Before Pomni knows it, she's comfortable enough that recalling his old habits makes her not dread them anymore. So when Caine stands close and lightly touches her arm due to oversight, she makes sure he knows it's all right.

And they keep spending time together, and he touches, and touches, and touches her. Pomni, in turn, feels lighter, and lighter, and lighter. Peaceful, at ease. Dare she say, happy, even.

Life is not perfect. As it stands though, it's good enough. No one has abstracted. No one is at risk of abstracting so far.

Progress is slow, but the research for an exit continues, and she is hopeful. The thought of actually leaving grows closer to reality. But a part of her feels heavy.

When it occurs to Pomni that leaving the Amazing Digital Circus means leaving Caine behind, she is alarmed by how much she'll miss him.

It'll hurt. Badly. So much the thought pains her even now.

The moment Pomni realizes this, she comes to the unexpected conclusion that she may like Caine a little more than she thought she would.

This later leads to an interesting discussion with Ragatha.

By the time Pomni comes to that conclusion, Caine is already down bad.

Neither has any idea that the other is in love with them.

Cue dumbasses trying to deal with their feelings while the potential conflict the escape brings looms over their heads.

During the talk with Phir Sē, it comes up that he has a daughter when he tells Taylor about how keenly aware he is of what he could be sacrificing to kill Behemoth.

And it's very odd to me that she's a hero, when her father is one of the men so monstrous that he's used as evidence for why the PRT should stick around. It's almost like the stereotypical superhero show plot where the plucky protagonist hero learns their dad is Doctor Evilman or whatever, but this is Worm. Later in the conversation Phir Sē reveals that he sacrificed family before in a similar scenario

And I can't help but feel that him sacrificing his wife and sons is connected to his daughter being a hero? Like imagine being her, and seeing your dad refuse to save the rest of your family because of the greater good. He could effortlessly step backwards in time but he stands there while their corpses cool instead. That could definitely crack a rift between them and cause his daughter to join the heroes in a desperate attempt to prove that you can save everyone. Hell, I could even see her dad letting her family die being a trigger event. And she's specifically one of the bright and popular heroes, one of the campy flashy ones like Mouse Protector. How much of that is because she can't bear to let herself be anything less than the ideal of a hero, because she can't stomach the thought of being someone who has to make a sacrifice like her father? Phir Sē says he'll live the rest of his life down in his bunker mourning her if he fails, but I think he's already been doing that. He's been consumed by the guilt of who he left in the past and how that ruined his only tie left, and he wants to do something that justifies his existence. If he kills Behemoth, the world celebrates, people are saved, and maybe his daughter will talk to him again. If not, he keeps living as he always has, alone and crippled by the weight of his actions.

I wonder how he felt, in his last moments. The bomb didn't kill the Endbringer, and Behemoth hunted down his bunker and killed him. He had to have seen that it survived, and while maybe he didn't fail so hard he vaporized the country, he didn't redeem himself, he didn't save anyone. He'll never know that his actions weakened Behemoth enough for Scion to finish the job, from his perspective he lost. I wonder if his daughter survived, and if she knows what he did to tip the scales of the battle. Would she even mourn him, assuming he caused her trigger and she knows he let her family die?

He liked Weaver because she reminded him of himself with her ruthless pragmatism and ability to make the hard choices, while also reminding him of his daughter with her idealistic nature. I think he saw a version of himself in her, one that didn't end up isolated in a bunker with no family left. One that has hope and still kept the humanity he feels he lost. She talks to him about working together with others, communicating, and he doesn't think it's something that's possible, he thinks humanity is a "wretched, petty species" and that infighting and lack of coordination would prevail even against an Endbringer. And I think he's right in thinking Taylor is like a younger version of him, because that's exactly what happens during Gold Morning until she makes them work together. He would feel vindicated, seeing Khepri.

Honestly I really wish he survived, he's such an interesting character and I would love to see more of him beyond a single random Tohu face. Most of this is headcanon but like, I think it fits pretty well, so who knows maybe it's the intended subtext.

Compilation of headcanons about Forget Me Not in a romantic relationship.

you asked about how I think he'd ACTUALLY navigate a relationship, so I went a little deranged thinking about it cause the guy is FASCINATING to analyze. sorry if you were expecting something else! like, something more romantic? if you just want romance stuff, deffo feel free to leave another ask being more specific!

Right off the bat, Forget Me Not strikes me as a type of person who has a lot of trouble keeping any sort of solid relationships due to his poor interpersonal skills.

Similar to Pavia, he exists outside of conventional society - but unlike Pavia, Forget Me Not has taught himself how to imitate others and mask as a sound, hinged and regular individual. He can charm his way in and out of any conversation, change the tide to his favour and play any role necessary for his goals - but it's all play pretend in the end, because he wholeheartedly believes that none of it is meant to last. Every relationship and connection he makes is done with one purpose in mind: to further his goals.

When someone approaches Forget Me Not intending to seduce or romance him, he plays the role of a perfect gentleman. Or whatever is convenient at the moment, really. His keen eye allows him to quickly discern little details, until he fully figures out your type just so he can adapt accordingly. This is a fantasy that wears off overtime - once you overstay your welcome and outlive your usefulness.

And because Forget Me Not is too much of a coward to risk his reputation and hard work by being the one to break your heart, he manipulates the situation to come out of this relationship scot-free. If you can't find any reason to leave him on your own, don't worry, he'll make sure there's something.

But when it comes to him being interested in someone and navigating a romantic relationship...

When Forget Me Not falls for someone, he falls hard and fast.

I want to insist on the lack of interpersonal skills - Forget Me Not has gone years denying himself of something as simple as a friend, someone to confide in. His whole existence revolves around revenge. To him, there's no space for romance in his life, he has no time for something so "juvenile". He can't fathom the idea of being attracted to anyone. The muscle in his rib cage isn't capable of love, it's just there to keep him alive until the world is rid of humans.

And yet, as blind and oblivious as he may be to his own feelings, Forget Me Not falls hard and fast entirely because of how desperate for connection he is. Attraction is something that paralyzes him and affection is a parasite that worms its way into his heart.

When Forget Me Not falls for someone, he becomes impulsive and reckless, not a lot but just enough to be noticeable by those who see him regularly - there is this slightly intense and unhinged feeling to his words, as opposed to the suave and smooth talk he casually dishes out, like he's itching to unravel and show his true nature right there and then. It's something that you still pick up on, long after that conversation has ended, something that you must've heard incorrectly because it's a little out of character, coming from him.

This is because he has no fucking idea on how to deal with it, because he doesn't even know something is happening to him.

No matter what he does during this state, he finds a way to justify all of his actions because denial is his first and foremost coping mechanism. If he finds himself staring at you from across the room, it's because he's making sure you're behaving. To ensure you're not a spy or cause any trouble to other patrons! If he remembers your favorite drink, it's because he needs to get enough points to be on your good side. After all, you probably have a lot of information he could use. If his hand lingers on yours, it's because he was distracted. Etc, etc.

If it goes on for long enough without any sort of confrontation, it'll start to eat him from the inside. Forget Me Not will think that you're using some arcane skill on him to make him act this way before he acknowledges he has a crush on you. Suddenly, there's a whole new thing occupying his brain - whenever he's not dissociating at home, he's thinking about you and that's dangerous.

Surprises are the way to his heart.

It's very hard to catch his eye, since he doesn't care for appearance nor status - he just doesn't care, period. Again, love isn't an option for someone like him. But the one thing that will absolutely rock his world is being caught off-guard.

Forget Me Not is a great actor, he plays his roles in conversations perfectly, he studies the way people talk to each other, the way one must gesture and move, the appropriate amount of eye contact one should make. He micromanages every single aspect of conversations because diplomacy is his forte, it's something he needs to excel at. Long story short, he knows how each and every conversation should go for him to get his way.

Which is why hearing someone laugh when they shouldn't, a genuine snicker or a chuckle, is enough to give him pause. He's intrigued and lost, because people aren't supposed to behave like that. Not the type of people he's used to, anyway. Condescending laughter is to be expected, everyone is pretending to have fun, but a real laugh? Without any hidden meanings or implications? The audacity to go off-script, regardless of how that might affect you? That's what will inevitably put you right in his sights.

These surprises must start out small, however. Forget Me Not is a very jaded and vindictive person with a very fragile ego and stubborn mind - someone who openly goes against everything he stands for, regardless of whether they're right or not, will end up on his black list. As seen with his reaction to Druvis III choosing to move on from her grief, Forget Me Not doesn't do well with his beliefs being torn to shreds so suddenly.

This mentality about everyone being inherently rotten and bound by so many unspoken rules of conduct and whatnot needs to be challenged little by little. Because at the end of the day, Forget Me Not projects his own baggage onto the world, and he must ease himself into the idea that people (and himself) can have actual depth and be more than just a means to an end.

And sure, he has an obsessive personality - some of his behaviour stems from the need to figure out "the catch", like he's constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop when it comes to you, just so he can go "I knew it!" at the end. Forget Me Not, under all that aloof and detached confidence, is nothing but a wounded animal. Gaining his trust or approval is harder than it is losing it.

On the subject of falling for anyone who isn't a pure blooded arcanist.

There is the possibility that Forget Me Not may fall for a human or mixed - two groups that he, alongside Manus Vindictae, holds with extreme contempt and hatred. Right away, it goes against everything he stands for and, as stated before, he doesn't do well with his beliefs being challenged so abruptly.

Whereas Manus Vindictae is an organization that has no problem being so openly hypocritical in their practices (loathing humans, yet offering them salvation just so that they can be used as pawns), Forget Me Not is an individual who lives mostly within his own head, in a constant state of denial and delusion. The idea of falling in love is already ridiculous to him, I literally just spent so many paragraphs talking about how he needs to ease into the idea of forming any sort of meaningful connection, even if it's something he does yearn for and something that he does so horribly. So imagine the absolute fucking whiplash of falling in love with the representation of everything he despises.

Forget Me Not navigating relationships is already difficult enough, but him trying to navigate a relationship with a human or mixed - especially one that is vocal about his affiliation with Manus and his own opinions - is even harder.

But not necessarily impossible.

However, it would lean towards a godawful and unhealthy dynamic, in which he'll begin to blur the lines between affection and aggression. Think of an ourobos, a permanent loop of Forget Me Not being unable to let go while also pushing you away.

He scrambles to find any "rational" excuse to justify his attraction for you. If you're docile and compliant, he'll insist that you're "different" and "not like other humans" just to remain righteous and true to his beliefs by separating you from your roots. And if you're not afraid to call him out and argue with him, he'll feel validated in his beliefs and latch onto you like a parasite because "you need to be reminded of your place". It's unrealistic to think that Forget Me Not can change his mind and become a better person right away, he would need years to heal from his own baggage and biases, then even more time to undo all the things he's absorbed from Manus Vindictae.

But I know these types of dark relationships aren't everyone's cup of tea, so I won't go into detail about it! Other interpretations in which he manages to get rid of all the toxic sludge that is his emotional baggage and questionable morals are just as valid!

The way Forget Me Not acts when he's in an actual relationship.

Every relationship Forget Me Not has had so far has been for the sake of The Walden and/or Manus Vindictae, and he's always made sure to keep them at arms length anyway - so this would be the very first "proper" and official relationship.

And it's a mess. He reeks of insecurity.

Taking into account everything I've said just far, Forget Me Not could easily put all of that knowledge and masking into treating his partner like the gentleman he pretends to be daily. He could just do that! But it stops coming naturally to him the second he's in your presence. Because the thing that attracted him to you in the first place is all those details that set you apart from his "norm", Forget Me Not is stuck in this area of not knowing whether you'd prefer the person he pretends to be or something else, something he might not be able to provide. Note how it's "something else" and not just himself.

The idea of Forget Me Not as a person falls apart when inspected closely, and so he's left insecure and vulnerable. He latches onto you easily, in private and in public, shifting his focus to revolve around you instead - the brand, new and shiny light in his life - but lacks confidence when it comes to keeping you by his side without any sort of manipulation.

He tries, God, he tries so hard. But I can absolutely see him pull all sorts of moves on impulse. From really childish and petty things (insisting on being the only one to serve you drinks, subtly influencing the seats, so that you always sit somewhere he can see or without any of the other patrons bothering you) to genuinely insidious things (lying both to your face and behind your back to drive the people he considers "undeserving of your attention" away, keep you in the dark about certain topics).

It's a lot of back and forth, establishing boundaries and showing him the lines that shouldn't be crossed so that all these actions don't become the norm. To be in a relationship with him, you'll need a lot of patience to guide him or the backbone to set your foot down when needed. I'd say at this point, he'd definitely respond better to being challenged - you're his partner, after all, he holds you way above everyone else in the room, way above himself as well.

But once he's fully eased into the relationship? When he now knows you like the back of his hand? And you've shown that you're willing to stay, even with all of his faults? He becomes so very clingy, but also much more tired in your eyes.

Forget Me Not's antics - his possessiveness, slightly obsessive behaviour, etc - are replaced instead by this lingering feeling of sadness. Instead of kissing your hand in public to make a statement for the world, he holds your hand in private as if his life depended on it, because he now fully believes the relationship to be too good to last. It's like he's preparing to say goodbye before fully enjoying the present with you. Like you leaving him is not a possibility but the end of the road. Coincidentally, it's this "doomer" mentality what pushes Forget Me Not to be more confident when it comes to being vulnerable around you.

I like to think that Forget Me Not is extremely eloquent when needed, but he's physically incapable of talking about his trauma or any other unpleasant experiences in his life - it's directly a result of all this constant repression. So he wouldn't tell you about it, but he would still hope that you can understand him without the need for words. I just see him as a physical person once comfortable!

he is your main model for the first draft of any clothes you produce — whether you intend items for a male or female audience does not matter to him, he’s happy to help regardless

any articles of clothing that you design for him are kept clean, pressed and neat at all times — he’d hate to spoil such a lovely gift after all, so he takes great care to keep those items safe

he does wear them of course, he’d hate for your work to go to waste, and he’s always happy to show off your work — he’s just very meticulous about cleaning and ironing after the fact, that’s all

you and your passion inspire him immensely and he isn’t afraid to admit that, always being the first one with you to celebrate your achievements — but he’s also there to support you when you reach a creative block

sharing techniques and exercises that he uses to help you out, and if all else fails bringing you your favourite warm drink so you can cuddle up on the settee and vent out your frustrations

because he gets it and you get it and sometimes it’s nice to just be understood

wally is with you through the good and the bad, the highs and lows of your career, cheering you on from the sidelines and helping you find your feet when you stumble

attending every interview and show, witnessing your sketches come to life, standing by you as you come into your own in this competitive environment and helping you stay afloat even when you feel you’re drowning

that same smile always on his face no matter what — even if it does get a bit strained when you take his measurements for the 97th time (it’s only 8am let the poor man put his hair up already, he doesn’t want to be picking blue hair out of his teeth before breakfast)

doing whatever he can to support you because you’ve done the same for him — because that’s what you do for the people you love

so this video (it's pretty good, worth a watch) basically saved me having to clean up the big word salad post I was drafting but I'm gonna reiterate a few points -

firstly, this isn't mentioned in the video but I think it's so, so important: unlike the valentine author, Gaster has never, ever used a single contraction. Toriel is another character who never uses them, no matter how casual the context. for something like this to suddenly change for no reason makes no sense. Toby is meticulous. I genuinely believe this is a HUGE strike against it being Gaster, yet almost no one mentions it. next, the valentine author speaks as if they don't know us: "you seem reliable", "you are very odd". and as we know, Gaster's well acquainted with us by now, so it'd make no sense for him to speak to us this way. (but what it does lend credence to is this being a character we either haven't met before, or haven't extensively interacted with.) additionally, in all instances so far, Gaster's been keen, focused, sharp. why would he suddenly be so addled and confused? the author saying they forgot who they're supposed to help, and it possibly even being themself, doesn't point to Gaster either - in fact, just the opposite - because the idea of him being forgotten is pure fanon. the game explicitly states that Asgore took so long to hire a new royal scientist because Dr. Gaster's brilliance was irreplaceable. how would the king know that if he didn't remember? fictional characters, by their very nature, are presented to us in a deliberate and finite way; our interactions with them have specific purpose. this means that when we try to hold them to real-world standards like "I, a real live person, write differently depending on the occasion", it won't always hold up. we have to go by what precedents have already been set by the creator, in the context in which these characters exist. on occasions when characters in UT/DR have spoken in a different way than usual, the fundamental, anchoring traits of their speech still remain intact (see: contractions), which would not be the case if Gaster were the valentine author.

(and of course, this doesn't even touch on the Japanese translation highlighting how wildly different the speech styles are, which I personally put more stock in than they do in the video.) the last 3rd of the video is more opinion/headcanon-oriented but he makes his point well. even if you disagree with his perception of Gaster (I do to an extent), it's true that there's already no shortage of whimsical, silly, lighthearted characters in UT/DR, and surely, if Gaster were meant to be one of them, Toby wouldn't reveal it in a way that's so out of left field. I love silly goofy wingding man as much as the next guy, but I also agree that attributing this personality to him out of nowhere, when it's incongruent with everything we've seen so far, would only serve to undermine his character and the uniqueness of it. none of this is to knock anyone whose opinion differs from mine! I'm just laying my thoughts out, for whatever that's worth. I've seen an unfortunate tendency in the community to lump the valentine in with the tweets and gonermaker text as all being on the same level of "obviously Gaster", and then tout it as proof that their headcanons are real. (we all have our headcanons! just don't be a dick about it eh?) at the end of the day, personally, I try to absorb and cling to as much canon evidence as possible, scant though it may be. because what I really really want, is to know who Gaster is. in the truest sense, as he is intended to be by his creator.

(but isn't it wonderful how much we all love this character, no matter how differently we may see him? I mean ultimately if we're not having fun here, then what's the point, right?)

Your sick little head, so brain damaged and lying in that hospital bed.

This art means a lot to me. It isn’t as rendered or polished as my other work, but I want it to look scrappy, messy, and still pretty. If you’d like to just read about the style and story of the art unrelated to myself, feel free to skip this section.

Last week I mentioned being in the hospital and the psych ward, and while I wont give extreme details, it was for an overdose. Recently after getting out I’ve been trying to act like nothing happened and it’s all going to go back to normal, but this is the 3rd time I’ve done it or been on the edge of it. Just last week I had to get rid of two of my cats just after I’d been discharged and that on top of the trauma of the whole situation I’ve just felt strangely empty. Overdoses don’t just come and go like that. The mental effects aside from whatever you took linger and hurt more than anything. “I’m doing better” really just means I’m not about to do it again, but those feelings are still stored somewhere deep inside me. For this specific piece I wanted to describe that feeling and wonder of “How would anyone feel if they found me? What will they do after?”

People don’t talk about Molly nearly as much as I think they should, but it’s understandable given that she has no set substance yet. For that reason I have made my own. The biggest thing I’ve mentioned before—in my Angel Dust headcanon post—is that I believe Molly is the one that found Anthony after he overdosed and called 911. The rest of his family was likely a bit worried, but I don’t think any of them cared as much as she did. Another headcanon of mine is that Anthony and Molly had matching rings with “AN” & “MO” engraved onto them. Molly sold her ring to pay for Anthonys funeral after his passing in the hospital and now wears Anthonys as replacement on her index finger which she eventually takes to heaven with her.

I don’t imagine she was able to visit him very often while he was in a coma but she still did when she could and would talk to him in hopes he could hear her a little bit before he left. It’d take a bit of a tangent but when sinners enter hell, in my mind entering hell takes as long as it did to die. So for Anthony it likely took him a week to a month to die during his coma from complications, and in turn, it took that same amount of time for him to full wake up in hell. Sinners to me are made and formed out of the ground in hell and wake up in a similar location to where they died. Angel Dust would’ve woken up alone in a hospital while his sister was now left alone and Anthony’s body likely already buried by then.

These are reasons why I included forget-me-nots and sweet peas as taped on decals. Their meanings being “Please don’t forget me” and “Goodbye, thank you for a wonderful time.” respectively. I also added the “M” wax seal over one of the sweet peas because I feel that it’s a sentiment that Molly held close to her heart and still does.

Molly’s body is torn from pink paper while Angel’s is blue paper. I intended for these to somewhat be seen as hands, like how the pink paper wraps over the forget-me-not when the blue paper lays beneath it to show Molly’s attempt to hold onto the memory of her brother while Angel is trying to remember his own life yet is unaware of what is happening to his sister now; unaware if she’s alive or not due to his poor keeping of time. Angel is also a scrap of paper glued above Molly’s hands to pretty genuinely symbolise they’re both in different dimensions now and can’t fully be apart of the same without the help of an external force. I also wanted to include more jumping spider elements so I’d like to think the string holding the tears is silk. Jumping spiders leave silk behind incase they fall so they can climb back up and when you put that in the form of a mentality I think Molly would fit into that very well.

I really hope we see more of Molly and I hope she had a good life and can see her brother again. Of course, she is a fictional character, but I can’t imagine the trauma she’s experienced in her life even without my personal headcanons. I love Molly a lot and just from how I personally interpret her she reminds me a lot of my mother.

Here it is, the headcanon that you've all been waiting for but you didn't know that you were waiting for: that age old debate of coffee or tea, Hawthorne edition.

Nash-This cowboy enjoys a good calming green tea out on the balcony at dawn, watching the sunrise on those days where it just hits in that way as the sun comes out over the Black Wood. Though, he absolutely loves very sugary lattes for whatever reason and Alisa used to wonder how it straight up didn't stop his heart. He goes out with Xander on these outings where if they're experiencing this need for caffeine and really don't want anything from the chef's kitchen, they go out for coffee at any random cafe they can find and they usually like going to different ones for experimentation purposes; Nash for his lattes and Xander for his mocha/chocolate iced drinks. They both love going out on these ventures and it's another favorite brotherly bonding activity. Anytime that Alisa becomes aware of these outings, she warns Libby to not make any cupcakes so that Nash doesn't get a severe sugar rush and it's just come to the point where both Libs and Alisa are terribly concerned that this man might get a heart attack so they've took it upon themselves to be his intervention tag team. It's a very tumultuous effort on their part.

Grayson-He actually prefers either given at any time but it does sometimes get event-dependent based on the intended outcome of his goals. If he wants to feel relaxed and refreshed, he drinks tea at a gala or charity dinner but in the case of working a late night for the foundation or his own homework, he needs coffee. He drinks copious amounts of black coffee when the stress of his work gets too great. One time it go so bad during a large project that his grandfather assigned him that in the middle of one of his work nights, he literally threw the mug of black coffee at his face he was so tired and drained. Nash went to check on him that next day to see if he was fine but found him asleep at his desk with coffee stains on Gray's usually pristine white shirt and sticky remnants on his face and then went to see the security footage. The older Hawthorne never told a soul and to this day, not even Grayson knows that it exists because Nash erased it from the cameras or that Nash saw him in his unruly state. As ironic as its sounds, when it comes to tea, his favorite flavor is Earl Grey (come on, you all saw that coming, right?) but he also loves a hazelnut roast with a sprinkle of apple cinnamon. He'd also never let anyone know this but he actually sometimes secretly buys himself a pumpkin spice latte anonymously because he's a sucker for it during the fall.

Jameson-Coffee through and through. He loves a good espresso and on occasion, if Nash is nowhere in sight and he needs an alcohol boost to get through the day, he sneaks in a shot of Bailey's. But, Jamie does have an oddly specific order for cold brews whenever Nash and Xander go on one of their caffeine-fueled urge adventures (yes, that's what they're called, according to Alisa, that is).

Xander-Forget coffee, he actually enjoys drinking hot chocolate more, specifically with milk, never hot water. He finds it absolutely disrespectful and sacrilegious to do this as it's always been referred in alternate terms as chocolate milk not chocolate water. This boy, being the genius he is, literally created an entire machine that actually can detect if a hot cocoa drink is made with milk or water; yes, he's that passionate and picky about this. Xan will debate on this topic very heatedly and most often than not it's one of the only opinion-based subjects that get him really going off. But yeah, when he's actually working in the middle of the night of an ongoing project that's likely lasted at least a few days with each one being an all-nighter, he gets black coffee and drinks two cups worth straight from the pot. Though, he loves trying out the different iced caffeinated drinks with chocolate or mocha flavors during summer.

i bet !!!! he was autistic coded the whole time and the creators themselves just did not know what they were doing!!!

before autism had a name and well known rep and stuff, before people really knew what it was, higher functioning autistics were just “quirky” or whatever. and say, if you were making a tv show or book, you wanted to take inspiration from real life. and you gave one of your characters traits you’d seen in those quirky individuals. you didn’t know what it was nor did anyone else, it was just a personality trait you gave them based off of what you’d observed !

neither the creator nor viewers would know that person was autistic. it was just mimicking traits you’d seen irl. and that’s why i strongly believe fred is autistic coded whether they planned it or not, even — almost especially — in a time where autism wasn’t well known !!!! that’s an argument given a lot from what i’ve seen, that an old cartoon wouldn’t purposely have an autistic character. but they would and they have. they just don’t know that’s what it’s called. it’s just a part of life, which people forget. buddy’s just undiagnosed lol /hj

the way my face lit up when i saw this in my inbox!!! always so happy to talk about autistic fred :)

autistic coding absolutely happens in cases where the writer doesn't intend it, and early versions of fred very well could be one!! a lot of his "quirky" moments in the older shows come from the odd scene where he does something so bizarre and spontaneous that it flips his well-put-together exterior on its head, like running down the joker & penguin in a rolling tire. this source of comedy from his character very much continues into his later incarnations, just in a way that seems more thoughtful/purposeful. like, at first glance he seems to be a very average, simple, good-looking boy!! but then he opens his mouth and he's a lame grandpa who will tell you about the history of nets regardless of whether or not you're listening, and impulsively start cheerleading routines to raise his friends' spirits.

and all of that just feels like such an autism thing, or at least one i can relate my own personality and experiences to. i love the idea that the writers of pre-mystery inc versions of fred may have taken character inspiration from similarly undiagnosed or unrecognised neurodivergent people in a time when those traits were merely considered "quirkiness". the idea that he's undiagnosed up until mystery inc is so canon to me now.

and to top it all off, yeah fred can be the butt of the joke sometimes, but he's still always a character we feel endeared to and want to root for! his strengths are unconventional and concentrated in specific areas, but he's highly competent and caring while also feeling human in his moments of awkwardness and insecurity!! and that's why i think he's such a great autistic character in both coding and canon, and why it makes me happy to see people celebrate this about him.

Another Oot Zelink Rant: Gatekeeping!

I keep telling myself I will stop doing these, but clearly I can not contain myself, so buckle up!

But what is it with the gatekeeping? I mentioned it before, but people continue spreading the whole "oot Zelink canonically can not end up together" thing. And I don't just mean Malinkers and nonshippers, but I also mean some popular Zelinkers, like artists and such who go like "yeah but no one actually believes oot Zelink got together/are able to get together". "The only way to ship them is the tragic way", etc, etc. You see, my rant isn't about saying these things shouldn't be liked even If I don't like them and It's also not supposed to be anti-Malink, because although I do not enjoy that ship (and fans certainly have ruined any chances of me liking it), I still believe in people having a choice. And I already made rants on how I believe it is possible that zelink did end up together, without ever stating Malink is bad.

But it's the whole "this is the only way" "everyone believes this" thing that pisses me off. Like stop speaking for everyone? You can believe whatever you want but you do not own the oot Zelink ship. Neither do I, no one owns any ship for that matter (unless it is a seafaring one). Let people have their own interpretations, headcanons, whatsoever. I suppose it is a problem with shipping in general.

So now a friendly reminder that your favorite youtuber or reddit/twitter/whatever thread saying Malon is Link's only option and Zelink is impossible still doesn't make it canon. And Nintendo certainly did not intend for it if they kept pushing Link and Zelda in other oot related content (interviews? Mangas they approved of? Official Art?). Does that make Zelink canon? No, it doesn't. But If Nintendo isn't willing to confirm even the most obvious Zelinks (SS, BOTW/TOTK) as canon, do you seriously think they will confirm Malink? But I got called a slur for my opinion before, so who knows if this wall of text matters.

Long story short: You can ship Link with whomever you like but don't speak for everyone on a specific ship and don't use false canon as justification to attack others. Canon is what Nintendo confirms.

Either way If anyone reading this feels addressed by this post, I'm sorry if it comes off as mean spirited, but I do think it is a big problem when people try to take other people's choices and (non harmful) opinions away.

1: sexuality headcanon

Gay, as per his canon sexuality. But very non-gate-keeper-y. If his boyfriend turns out to not always a boy (as I sometimes like to play with Cisco and Barry's genders and they are also my two favorites to ship Hartley with...) he's still super gay for that person.

5: first headcanon that pops into my head

Jerrie's first word was Hartley's name. She didn't start talking until late, so she actually was able to do a pretty decent approximation for her first try. Still didn't quite have the H sound yet, but her big brother was her favorite even then so of course she wanted to say his name, get his attention.

Hartley was the most delighted big brother ever and would not shut up about it at school all week.

6: favorite line from this character

I realize you don't have to explain your hiring decisions to me, but maybe for the sake of a fun exercise, we could pretend you did.

So while yes, this is Hartley being a dick about Cisco, there's actually a lot to unpack about this dialog.

Hartley's talking like this *to his boss* which tells us how comfortable Hartley is with Eowells. He plays chess with him, has Latin as a sort of secret language between them, and he demands to be treated as an equal even while acknowledging they technically aren't. (It is with good reason that I so often have Eowells/Hartley as backstory...)

But also, Hartley is not pleased with Cisco's hiring. And while Hartley clearly disapproves of Cisco's clothing choices, it kind of comes off as a focus point for everything else going on when it gets brought up. Cisco is a fresh-out-of-college hire and his clothes make that *extremely* obvious. But Hartley is specifically calling into question here - in private, which is actually the one (only) way Hartley does actually manage to behave professionally in regards to Cisco in the flashbacks - if Cisco is qualified for the job which... makes me suspect that Cisco probably wasn't, based solely on job experience.

I suspect Eowells was just so eager to hire Cisco that he hired him for a job that was intended for a more senior engineer. Or at least a junior one with a couple years of experience under their belt. Not a college grad who may or may not even have some of the certifications needed for the position. TBH, Hartley takes his anger out on Eowells in the 'present' portion of The Sound and the Fury on Barry so it really makes sense to me that Hartley's bad behavior in the past towards Cisco was also Hartley misdirecting his frustration with Eowells onto a more convenient target. Part jealousy because Eowells is looking favorably (and fanboying a bit, let's be real) over Cisco (future superhero Vibe and Eowells gets to mentor him? how could he help but fanboy?) and that's how Hartley's relationship with Eowells began too... but also Eowells hired someone who pretty clearly does not fit the job description.

Obviously canon never supports this little pet theory of mine and it's entirely born of a more forgiving interpretation of this line of dialog from the episode but... I do really like the interpretation because it makes Hartley a bit more sympathetic without excusing his bad behavior towards Cisco. And it establishes parallels between his past and present behavior.

7: one way in which I relate to this character

Honestly Hartley and I don't have a whole lot in common. I latched on to him because he's such an interesting and canonically gay character and the more I learned about his comics incarnation the more I liked the character.

I definitely relate to his queerness though. I may not be a gay dude - aroace and only sometimes a girl (though always a girl when its funny, gotta commit to the bit) - and it's kinda hard to explain how I feel I relate to his queerness but... I really do.

8: thing that gives me second hand embarrassment about this character

Every time he's a classist dick towards Cisco in S1. Way to misunderstand the character, show writers. *wincing painfully* Did they even read any of the stuff with Hartley in it? Guy who stands up, even to the Flash, on behalf of the homeless people of Central City...

Not that I don't still lean into that trait sometimes when writing fanfic so I can then have him grow out of it, but still. Makes me cringe a little inside every time.

9: cinnamon roll or problematic fave?

Cinnamon roll - sure he's got a checkered past, but his heart's always in the right place. He just wants to help people, make the world a better place, and abolish the police. Even if his comics self is dating/engaged to a CSI.

but is it wrong to feel upset that Neil Gaiman repeatedly acknowledged fans' readings of Azri/Crow as ace/queerplatonic if the intention was always for it to be romantic/sexual? not because that's a problem, obviously that representation is also important and I'm glad it's there, but I don't think he should've given the impression that a community with even less (practically nothing) might be represented (or at least an equally valid reading) if that was never the case? feels bad man :/

I don't think it's wrong to feel that way, because those are your feelings and you're feeling them. But I do think this is overall... a little complicated? Disclaimer before I continue: I am like a step removed from what Neil Gaiman's actions have ever been on this site or just in general lol, so I'm not speaking from the perspective of being intimately aware of the lore there or what instances you may be thinking of personally.

At minimum, all I know is that he's always said since season 1 that it's a "love story." Does that necessarily have to equal romance? I mean... no, because "love story" is a storytelling framework, but also. Well. [gestures vaguely]

But! That aside – again without knowing the history of potentially specific instances – I will say two things:

Acknowledgement of fan readings or gratitude or headcanons or whatnot does not have to always be, like, word-of-author-God tacit endorsement or confirmation of canon. It could very well be "I'm glad you enjoyed it, or "I'm glad you see yourself / see value in this story," or even (based on what I remember of some of the Discourse of the time) "I'm glad you're advocating for the legitimacy of the love in this story." What I'm trying to say (as gently as possible) is that him liking posts or engaging with fans' happiness was not necessarily a promise with any specificity of the nuances of the characters' identities in canon or where the story might go in future. Hell, it's even likely that he engaged with such a spectrum of fan content years ago that some could consider things he acknowledged to be contradictory, i.e. maybe he liked a sex indifferent ace reading and also liked a demi-and-super-into-each-other ace reading for example. (There's also something to be said for how messy things can get when a creator is this dialed into fandom conversations and engages with fans directly, because then people read into the creator's every online move, and some of the onus is on the creator for that broadly speaking, but... I digress.) So essentially, it's very possible with whatever acknowledgements he made that he wasn't intending to be giving impressions or promises of future material at all.

This is pure conjecture, but there's also nothing to say that he did always know what the "intention" would be in regards to the extent of the romantic or sexual nature of Aziraphale and Crowley's relationship. It's highly possible their relationship has evolved as much for Neil as it has for us. Writing can be like that, y'know? The characters or the way you end up taking their story can surprise you. And that's especially true in the case here, since there was an original book, and then the show vastly expanded upon their relationship in season 1, and now everything beyond that is largely uncharted story waters in terms of character work. I'd bet on it tbh. When Neil was liking tumblr posts or whatever back in ye old 2019, who knows how much he had mapped out for the future at that point?

But like, look. You're not wrong if you feel bad about it, as long as you're being normal about feeling bad (and you seem to be), aka not taking it out on anyone else or shitting on what the story is now or may become in future.

I also want to add that I don't think an ace spectrum reading has to inherently be considered irrelevant now or in the future for these characters? Yet I also very much know that that can sound like bullshit if a specific flavor of ace spectrum reading is what you had in mind, so I'm sympathetic to that :/

I don't know if this is very helpful smh but uhhh those are my thoughts. At the end of the day I'm sorry you're upset and I hope you continue to enjoy the characters / the show!

amongst this amassed collection are: a large array of signed first editions of your favourite classical novels, cuttings of plants that have since gone extinct, clothes from your favourite periods of fashion (all custom tailored to your proportions, of course), films and other entertainment based media from the future (along with the tech needed to engage with them) and a number of small statues/figures, toys and jewellery

they rarely ever actually use your name and will instead make use of a large rotation of increasingly bizarre pet names — some from the forgotten past, some from the future and others of their own design that they felt suited you for whatever reason

they’re not the most physically affectionate person, but they won’t brush you off or turn you away if you lean your head against their shoulder or reach for their hand — they’re not touch-averse or ashamed of you, either, it’s just not something that comes naturally to them

when you’re feeling down they try and lift your mood by bringing you along to see what they deem as the most beautiful moments in time: the birth of the universe, the explosions of supernovae, the ocean when it’s freshly teeming with new life in the cambrian and more — just because they’re desensitised to it all doesn’t mean that you are, and they take full advantage of that fact

timekeeper will never admit this to you, but they’ve loved you for far longer than you’ve existed — having met first you in the far future when you were already taken with them and immediately having gone back to meet you for the ‘first time’ properly

they didn’t want to spoil anything else for themselves and it’s because of this that your relationship is the one thing that they avoid looking into when they travel forwards — they want to experience it with you, not be left looking beyond the now and leave you resentful in their wake

they sleep as stiff as a board and snore quite loudly, but if you cuddle up to them they’ll get this peaceful smile on their face and they’ll get ever so slightly quieter (but even then it’s like sleeping next to a muffled freight train)

protective to a fault and they have been known to obliterate anyone who might intend to cause you or your relationship harm — be that someone who was or was considering flirting with you, or someone who was or was going to become a threat to your physical well-being

they enjoy going on adventures with you and having fun — loving the sound of your laughter more than anything else — but they’ve also grown to appreciate the slow peace of domestic life, something they’d loathed before you

and even still they do prefer excitement — they’re just much more willing to set aside their thrill-seeking in order to spend that bit more time by your side

My Issues With The Vessel Zote Theory

because I keep off-handedly mentioning that I don’t believe in it and am willing to argue but haven’t actually given my points and We Just Can’t Let That Stand.

And I’m going to start off with some quick disclaimers of I SWEAR I PROMMY I’M NOT DOING THIS TO ARGUE IN FAVOR OF HIM BEING A NOSK, I genuinely have issues with this theory and I wanna line em out. I’m not arguing for him being a nosk here I prommy I swear. I can put my biases aside I can

And disclaimer 2: If you want to go on with the headcanon that he’s a vessel after all this, or if you don’t read it at all and just wanna keep that headcanon, that’s totally valid!!! I’m not trying to bash on anyone that believes in this, nor is my intent to be hostile at all. With how vague Hollow Knight’s lore is and how just about anything is arguable to an extent... honestly, he very well could be, and I could just be talking about nonsense. I just have my own reservations about it, n I wanna share em. Because I like to argue I love debate what can I say BUT JUST TO EMPHASIZE. I do not intend to come off as aggressive in any way . I’m not targeting anyone individually, I’m just lining out the common arguments I’ve seen and my own arguments against them.

Obvious points that I could mention but are quite easily forgivable, especially if going specifically with an “early/failed” vessel theory, so I won’t really argue them: - The whole voice/mind/will situation (could’ve been figured out afterwards/later on) - The Mouth (Lumped in with the ‘voice’ part of the former argument; I will not forgive arguments of it being a mutation, though, because then there should’ve been at least ONE more vessel in the baby pit with a noticeable mouth) (Though I’m also not sure how he would develop a mouth like that... considering who the parents would be if he was a vessel? Neither the Pale King nor White Lady have a visible mouth like his, so? Where come from) - Color Pink (It’s not as noticeable in game, and in official art this isn’t portrayed at all. But Zote’s shell, if color-picked from his sprites, is a pinkish color as opposed to a vessel’s white. Which would make absolutely no sense if he was a child of two Pale Beings - how in the got damn would you get pink baby from two blindingly white beings of literal whiteness. If mutation argument see above)

- Those two precepts about Fathers/Mothers or whatever (I mean, honestly, without Zote looking like a vessel, I don’t think anyone would even make the connection. I personally see this as a red herring, but also I totally get why it could be seen as referencing the Pale King/White Lady, so eh.)

- Pronouns (He can be Gendered Child 2 if he wants even if he was born a vessel, I don’t see why not)

Points that I am Now Going To Argue At Great Lengths:

If vessel, Zote void. This is established to be how vessel work. How vessels were made to work. Vessels void. We agree on that. I hope. Zote not void.

If not void, he could still be a child of the Pale King & White Lady (though the... earlier ‘mutations’ are kinda ??? on how that happened) but not a vessel. Vessels were made for the purpose of containing the Radiance. That is their sole purpose. Hence why they were made with void, as PK figured that would work to contain the Radiance, so long as thoughts/will weren’t involved. A simple child of both of them could... I guess still be seen as an “early vessel attempt,” but... how? Why? Why would they think that would work to contain the Infection? If we’re assuming that PK found out fairly quickly how the Infection works, and realized he needed something to contain it that couldn’t think nor will for anything, why would his first go-to be to just have a child? Without void involvement at all? Did he assume a child between him and WL would just be A-OK to contain the infection due to Higher Being Prowess? And if so, how’d he learn he was wrong without Zote dying/being infected? unless you mean to tell me Zote is immune because his philosophy of “simply don’t dream lol” actually deadass worked

Arguments against Zote being void because I know I’m going to have to prove that now: The easiest and most blatant way to tell a void creature apart from other bugs in the game is the particle effects. Or to tell an infected creature apart from an uninfected one. Infected bugs have orange particles, uninfected have white, and void creatures have black.

Another easy way to tell void creatures apart from non-void creatures is the sound effect that plays when void is struck. Listen closely when Ghost hits the Collector or even their own Shade - there’s a distinct “woosh” sound that doesn’t match the ‘smack’ other hits have.

Zote has neither the particles nor the sound effect. If fighting him in the Colosseum, he gives off white particles. The wooshy void effect isn’t heard, either. Seems pretty cut n dry, right?

Now what I see people mention. And what drives me insane. Is the Grey Prince Zote battle. The only and I’m talking the only thing that points towards Zote being vote at all is the particle effect when he enters the arena and when he dies. Throughout the battle, he’s still giving off the white particle effect when struck. The wooshy void sound is still not heard. Not even acknowledging that This Is A Fake Zote. That is not Zote the Mighty, a knight of great renown. That is a fictional version of him made up by Bretta. Nothing that happens with him in that dream should even be considered as canon real totally valid outside of “Wow, Bretta sure thinks about Zote in Ways.” I will stick by this until I die. Why does he have black particles when he shows up/dies? Gonna be real with u chief, I have no idea. Because it makes no sense. The only things I can think of would either be 1) In a meta-gamey way, Team Cherry thought it looked more dramatic for the funny boss battle and didn’t think it through or 2) The FUNNIER option: Bretta is a fanfic writer and she’s writing about an edgy dark prince or whatever. She wouldn’t know what void is, so that’s off the table, but I’m just saying she could so totally be like HE blEEDS black BLOOD (it’s darkness) (there’s a darkness inside him) . hemolymph dark as night. very beautiful, very powerful

Foreseeable counterargument someone could bring up is that the kingsmoulds react similarly - White particles until killed, where there’s black mixed with white. And we know the kingsmoulds are made of void. My argument against that point is that what we’re hitting is the kingsmould’s armor, and when they die, then we see the black mixed with the white. Because armor begone. Like 90% of Zote is hittable in the GPZ battle (as in he has no armor), so that excuse wouldn’t work there. And this is also in the Pale King’s ... mind, or something. Honestly, the fact that we see void in there at all is more intriguing than anything,

Alright, listen. One line from a real old kickstarter post by Team Cherry is a dead giveaway that Zote was probably going to be a vessel - or related to Ghost - in some way, at least in an initial draft: “Claiming to be a rival of the Hollow Knight and his superior in every way, Zote has supposedly come to Dirtmouth to defeat the evil creatures lurking in the depths and find the source of the poison.”

My issue with taking this at face value and just running with it has to do with. The fact that this kickstarter post was made in 2014. This is before they even figured out who the Hollow Knight was. The “Hollow Knight” they are referring to here is not the Hollow Knight today. They’re talking about Ghost. This is more obvious in the Nailsmith’s character reveal, wherein it states: “But [the Nailsmith’s] neglect has impact. His discarded nails have spread wide through Hallownest, clutched tight in the hands of creatures possessed. Only in the Hollow Knight's broken nail does he at last see true potential. Distant and difficult to achieve, but it is in there, waiting - a blade to be honed beyond all others, to be forged into a form so brilliant it transcends its metal and becomes myth.”

...And it’s followed by a picture of Ghost next to the Nailsmith.

They also misgender Ghost, and we know TC is pretty adamant now about the vessels having they/it pronouns.

What I’m saying is I don’t take any of the old kickstarter posts to be relevant anymore lmao

If Zote vessel, why is local guy not doing anything to convince me of this

By that I mean... look at how he wanders around in the game. Saying he was called here by the Hollow Knight, like Ghost was, why isn’t he doing anything to further the goal of usurping them? You’d think he’d want to - local bastard touts himself as a hero everywhere he goes. This would be an actual real chance.

But... Closest he gets to a dreamer is that one spot in the City of Tears, and that time he gets trapped in a web in Deepnest. He’s never in Fog Canyon, never even at the Black Egg temple, and instead he’s, uh... at the Colosseum, at one point.

Easy argument here is that he’s just incompetent. Okay, fair enough.

What about him kinda mentioning that he’s from a faraway land or whatever?

Oh, well an excuse there is that he’s a Bitchass Liar. Sure, okay.

How about his thoughts/dialogue? Does he mention or even think about being here for any specific duty or purpose to fulfill? Even vaguely hint at going after the dreamers, or defeating the Hollow Knight, or anything like that at all? Well, sure! There’s that grand old promise he made!... To, uh! Himself...? “A promise of glory! Glory for I, Zote the Mighty! I never doubted myself, never faltered, and now I have achieved everything I desired.”

Well that doesn’t quite give us anything. Seems more like we were led to believe that, with the hints of his promise earlier, perhaps he was deeply rooted into the lore-- only for it to turn out TC was pointing and laughing at us like Haha . You really fell for it huh. Idiot. Stupid. Silly. /j

What I’m getting at is that nothing about what he says/thinks or actively does in game actually... points to him being a vessel. Unless you want to argue that one line of dialogue of “Being overly devoted to one's duties is no virtue” - in which you argue that Maybe He Doesn’t Want To Do That Hollow Knight Shit. Which... I mean. If you want to stretch with everything else considered, sure. Nothing else in his dialogue/thoughts hints at that being the duty he’s referring to, though. His thoughts in that moment don’t even follow up on that idea, as he’s just thinking about the rain.

I’m sure this could all be argued one way or another, though. TC do love being vague as got damn possible about their lore so who really knows

If Zote vessel what the hell is Hornet doing

Shorter point, but Honestly this confuses me a lot if going with the Zote vessel theory. W. Why is she not. Killing him. Why hasn’t she killed him. She kills vessels, she has no issue killing vessels, that’s a whole thing. She also “feels no sadness at a weakling’s demise” or what have you. The only reason she lets Ghost survive is because they proved themselves as strong, and they could be capable of actually stopping the infection.

Local zote is notoriously not strong. If local Zote was a vessel, w. Why is he not killed by Hornet. We know she’s capable.

She doesn’t mention him, either. Nothing like “there’s two of you wandering about” or “there was another, but he’s a slippery bitch and somehow got away from me” the latter of which I CANNOT imagine,

Only possible explanation here was that she reasoned Oh No He Couldn’t Be for reasons listed above, and she just dismisses the idea entirely. I guess

Narratively... why?

Zote is a character that’s supposed to be a foil to Ghost. Zote exists to be a contrast - he’s supposed to be a “flawed” version of Ghost. A cheap offbrand version, if you will.

On first glance, they look physically the same, but Zote’s differences are meant to highlight aspects of Ghost. Zote has asymmetrical horns, he’s hunched over, his shell is that off-white pink color, and he’s got a mouth. Ghost is symmetrical, upright, and pure white.

Zote’s loud and chatty, whereas Ghost doesn’t talk at all. He’s self-centered and seemingly uncaring of others, whereas Ghost... if they save him, are shown to be the opposite. (As a side note, this is why it makes me a little... A little mad when people say Zote serves no purpose. His whole purpose in the game is to characterize Ghost, that’s what a foil is. If he’s saved, that characterizes Ghost as someone with sympathy, or perhaps not entirely hollow. Brushing by him and not saving him then characterizes Ghost as just as selfish and uncaring as he is, because they don’t know anything about him in that timeline. In a timeline where Zote isn’t saved, Ghost just left a bug to die Because... why? They don’t know Zote is an asshole there. They just let an innocent bug die. And walked onward without pause. Without saving Zote, he as a foil doesn’t exist. No character then really serves to characterize Ghost. They don’t really do anything else out of their way to give them character outside of the flower quest, I guess. Even sparing the Nailsmith doesn’t really count here, as if they brush past and not kill him, that doesn’t necessarily mean they spared him. They just didn’t follow his order. It’s not integral to what they’re supposed to be doing, so why should they? Anyway side tangent done.)

A lot of Zote’s “story” is also built up in a way that almost leads you into thinking there’s something deeper at work, but then turns around and slaps you for thinking that with his ending. His “promise,” which builds up intrigue, turns out then to be “a promise to himself for glory.” It’s nothing actually interesting. It’s intentionally disappointing.

To me, and this one is the only truly opinionated point rather than relying more on what’s objective, it doesn’t make... a lot of sense for him to be a vessel with the narrative that TC has given us. You could have a foil that’s also a vessel, and you can make a vessel that’s supposed to be disliked, but for Zote specifically it just... I feel like it’d be the wrong idea? If you made Zote a vessel, I think he’d fit more into the role of a parallel/mirror than a foil. Coming from the same place but branching off, then. Having more similarities than the other realizes, having somewhat similar paths (coming from the void, leaving Hallownest, then coming back at the Hollow Knight’s call)... But still being different people by the end of the day.

I just don’t really see it that way.

N furthermore, everything about this bastard is fake. Whether that be blatant lying or just his delusions of grandeur. Even his actual hard boss battle, GPZ, is fake. It’s not real. So why would he be a real vessel, despite everything else?

Why should we even believe his appearance is real? Why shouldn’t we believe he’s a nos-- [I’m shot and killed]

AAAAAAAND THAT’s all. Yea. I said the Zote things. I don’t think he’s is a vessel. N that’s it. U believe whatever u want though I think it’s a fun idea to play with, don’t get me wrong!! That’s a given seeing as I started Tinnitus!! I j. Well yknow
