best underrated anime in your opinion??

Another wonderful Anon with another difficult yet welcomed question (´｡• ω •｡`)

I will try to follow the same layout as I did with the manga recommendations ask. These are the anime series that instantly come to mind that, in my humble opinion, are underrated :

Underrated Anime #1 :

91 Days

Why aren't more people talking about this series?! I've watched 91 Days at least a half dozen times, and it never gets old. This anime is set back during the Prohibition Era and follows a young man determined to avenge his family who were murdered by top members of a mob/organized crime family. In order to get close to them, he inserts himself into their world and works his way to the top. I genuinely love this anime so much. It's really sad, but is beautifully written and executed. I highly recommend watching the English Dub, mostly because I think the English voice actors do a perfect job with the accents and turn-of-phrase used during that time period. If you enjoy Crime Dramas, then please give 91 Days a chance. It's a 12 episode anime, so it's definitely manageable. Just be prepared for the ending. Despite watching it several times already... I'm still conflicted lol

Underrated Anime #2 :

Gangsta

I was so disappointed to find out this anime was discontinued, especially since it ended on a cliffhanger. From my understanding, the main cause was due to the production studio going bankrupt. Despite this, I really enjoyed Gangsta enough to hold onto a tiny shred of hope for a second season (I just won't hold my breath lol). Gangsta takes place in a town called Ergastulum and follows two "handymen" who conduct an array of different jobs. This anime is geared towards a mature audience, since it has prostitution, drugs, and other adult-themed elements in it. One unique detail is that one of the handymen, Nicolas, is deaf. If you enjoy darker themes and thrillers, then I'd suggest checking out Gangsta. It's 12 episodes long... Just keep in mind this anime does not have a second season, and may not ever be continued.

Underrated Anime #3 :

Kakuriyo Bed & Breakfast for Spirits

Little known fact about me : I adore supernatural themed anime. Series like Kamisama Kiss, Gugure! Kokkuri-san, Fruits Basket, and others all fit my taste perfectly. Kakuriyo Bed & Breakfast for Spirits is no different. This anime is about a human girl named Aoi who has the ability to see spirits. One day, an ogre appears and takes her back to an inn called Tenjin-ya that is run and patronized by ayakashi. Upon arriving, he reveals that Aoi's grandfather had made a deal with him. In exchange for forgiving the old man's debt, Aoi is to marry the ogre. Refusing the proposal of marriage, Aoi insists on working at the Bed & Breakfast in order to pay off the debt and ultimately earn back her freedom. This is such a wonderful anime. All of the characters are so cute and charming. And I'm a big fan of Aoi! She's not one of those useless or annoying anime protagonists. Quite the opposite, actually. I am currently watching Kakuriyo Bed & Breakfast for Spirits, and I'm loving every moment of it. It's 26 episodes long (I'm at episode 18), so a bit longer than the other series I've mentioned. But if you enjoy Supernatural Romance anime with some Comedy sprinkled in, then I highly recommend Kakuriyo Bed & Breakfast for Spirits (:

Underrated Anime #4 :

Aoharu X Machinegun

This is one of the many anime series that I wish would be blessed with a second season. Aoharu X Machinegun is about a high school student named Hotaru who mistakenly accuses her new neighbor, who happens to work as a host, of scamming her best friend. To defend the honor of her friend, Hotaru agrees to play a game of airsoft with the host, Matsuoka. In the process, Hotaru causes an extensive amount of damage before ultimately losing to Matsuoka. He then forces Hotaru to join his airsoft team, stating that it was the best way for Hotaru to pay off her debt. Plot twist : Matsuoka and his teammate, Yukimura, have no idea that Hotaru is actually a girl, a secret she needs to keep after learning that girls are not allowed on their team. This is a really enjoyable 12 episode anime series with a good amount of action, comedy, and some more intense/emotional scenes. So if you're interested in Airsoft or like Comedy and Action anime, then you might wanna check out Aoharu X Machinegun.

Underrated Anime #5 :

Servamp

You can't go wrong with a vampire anime, right? How about vampires that take the form of animals? Servamp fits both criteria. This series is about a boy named Mahiru who takes in what he thinks is a stray cat, only to inadvertently make a contract with a vampire, named Kuro (aka Sleepy Ash of Sloth). Shortly afterwards, Mahiru gets thrust into this once unknown world of vampires when Kuro's brother appears and vows to wage an all-out war against Kuro and their other siblings. I'd say this is arguably one of the better vampire themed anime currently out, at a total of 12 episodes. So if you enjoy Supernatural elements, Vampires, and little touches of Comedy and Action sprinkled in, then I recommend Servamp.

Honorable Mention :

Hakuoki (sometimes spelled Hakuouki)

I am happy to say that unlike some of the other series I listed here, this anime in particular was completed with a total of 3 Seasons, a set of OVAs, and 2 films... Not to mention all of the games for this franchise. This series takes place during the Edo period and follows a young lady named Chizuru. She travels to Kyoto to search for her father, only to be taken into custody by members of the Shinsengumi after witnessing them cutting down individuals who appear to be possessed. Upon realizing who Chizuru's father is, a man responsible for creating an elixir that turns those who drink it into invincible blood lusting beings called Furies, the Shinsengumi members decide to keep Chizuru close, expecting the girl to aid them in their search for her father. Hakuoki is a beautiful anime with even more beautiful artwork. If you enjoy Historical anime with Fantasy elements, then Hakuoki may appeal to you. Note : Hakuoki is also an otome game, so the anime can give off "reverse harem" vibes at times. But if you can overlook that if you're not into otome, then it can still be very enjoyable to watch (:

wheres that post that's like 'don't put a number in your story unless absolute necessary bc nothing makes a reader fixate more than when there's a number in a story' bc i'm losing it over how medical malpractice m.d. handles the age of the main character

like first you have an episode set in December where one of the main character's employees found out his birthday was coming up even though he didn't want anyone knowing that. Ok so his birth month is December. Cool!

Then the next season, it's stated he was born on June 11th, 1959. Ok thats a whole half year difference but okay that fine since thats the same bday as the actor playing him. So in 2007 he should be 48 right? Nope, bc his best friend says he's 45 which would make his birth year 1962.

Ok, maybe his best friend that he's known for over a decade got his age wrong. It happens. I forget how old I am sometimes. Hell in that episode where his bday was in December, the best friend is like "wait your birthday is around right now right?" so him not being on top of birthdays is a plausible thing you can draw from this (i dont buy it but its fine)

Then in season 7, his birthday changed to May 15, 1959. I'm not quite sure why they moved it back a month but okay sure! May, it is!!!!

BUT THEN

IN THE SERIES FINALE

THEY CHANGED THE YEAR

TO 1958!!!!

And this is just the main character. Don't get me started with the timeline of stuff that happens pre series bc the best friend gets back together with his first wife in 2010 and it's stated in Season 6 Episode 19 "Open and Shut" they divorced 10 years ago ("I wish we had this fight ten years ago"). Which can't be the case bc the main character and the best friend met when the best friend just finished med school and was served papers by the first wife. Which had to be around 1992 if I'm to believe the friend is 46 in 2012 and he finished med school at 26. (then again seeing how this show treats numbers it could be wrong) IDK maybe there's a chance the writers didn't realize it was 2010? Like I sometimes think the 80s was 20 years ago, not 40.

OH WAIT, reading the transcript from Season 6 Episode 17 "Lockdown", they were married from 1990-91. So main character and best friend had to have met in 1991. But then in the next episode (Knight Fall), the best friend says "...things (with the first wife) seem to be going great. But then they seemed to be going great 12 years ago." MY GUY!!! IT'S 2010!!! TWELVE YEARS AGO WAS 1998!!!!!!! YOU WERE ALREADY WORKING AT YOUR CURRENT WORKPLACE WITH YOUR BESTEST FRIEND FOREVEREST!!!!!!

I've wanted to see a timeline of all the events that happened in this show both pre series and in series but that's kinda hard to do when the show can't get their numbers right

Update - 29/11/23

Things have been an utter mess recently. I’ve had a lot weighing on my mind. At the start of the week I had a difficult practical which has filled me with dread for the assessed practical I have next week, I hadn’t received feedback for my essay when the deadline for feedback had passed, I had (and still have) an assignment due in January that I’m terrified of writing and tests to get through, I got an email saying I might be kicked out of the university because student finance were refusing to pay my fees, I had AN having a go at me for eating too much because I’ve had horrible mental hunger (I haven’t experienced this in the 8 years I’ve had AN and it is very scary and also feels kind of embarrassing).

It all became too much and I ended up doing something very silly and self-destructive on Monday night and having to be taken to A&E by the hall wardens. This wasn’t the first time I’d done this and it was the second time I’d needed medical intervention because of itso I’m currently at my parents’ house as I’m not trusted to be on my own in halls (It’s lucky I’m at uni close to home). I had a lot of conversations with doctors and they identified that there was a bit of a gap in my care - I was being supported with my eating but not for other parts of my mental health. I’ve been referred to CMHT so we’ll see how that goes.

For the second week in a row I’ve had to cancel all obligations outside of uni and just focus on surviving.

Things are a little better than they were on Monday. The university have confirmed I won’t be kicked out (that email was wrong). Also I got my essay feedback yesterday and I did surprisingly well. I got 91/100 and the only criticism was of my bibliography (maybe I shouldn’t have trusted Mendeley to do it all) so I feel a bit better about my writing! I am still scared to start the report that’s due in January though.

I’m also scared for my ED appointment tomorrow. I’m going to be weighed and I’m afraid I might have gained because I’ve been at home and my parents have been making sure I eat more than I’ve been having at uni. And I’m not looking forward to having to explain my self-destructive episodes which are no longer secret.

My #1 post of 2022

Ryeon can't help but notice the shadows, the traces, of the man she knew (and loved) in the Park Joong-gil she meets at Jumadeung.

“He won’t know you,” The Jade Empress had said. “He just shares the same face and the same name, but he is not the Park Joong-gil from your life.”

That’s the funny thing about reincarnations though. They’re never exactly the same, but they always share core personality traits and values.

So even if Ryeon isn’t actively searching for pieces of her husband in the Park Joong-gil she works with, her subconscious still picks up on the crumbs that it manages to find. And it hurts like hell.

I do well, it's about this main character : thé epitome of european beauty standard blonde hair blue eyed you get what I am saying. This is fairly rare in the setting of the anime keyword here rare so summed of this beautiful character whose name I no longer have in mind is sold at an action yes you read that right! The man that bought him is... a pervert and human trafficking not suitable for everyone so beware), Orange(about suicide so pleath proceed with caution. I was such an emotional mess (yes I cried watching each episode because I dealt with this topic myself) , Orenchi no Furo Jijou

The Warner Siblings are Canonically 91 Years Old and Wakko is the Oldest.

So I noticed this image from an old comic has been making the rounds in the Animaniacs fandom circles lately, usually it's invoked as a helpful reminder of the Warners' ages and of that it is, in fact, now okay to desexualize them because of that. That's all well and good but comming across it again today got me thinking and well... Here I am today, to smugly and unhelpfully point out that Yakko here is actually factually incorrect, so here goes:

Although, it's never brought up in canon the common understanding is that all 3 of the Yakko is supposed to be a teenager while Wakko and Dot are probably just preteens. This common understanding, while making a lot of sense intuitively, is actually wrong and can be easily disproved by the very first scene of the first episode of the original series:

That's right, all 3 of the Warner siblings were canonically born, or rather, created in the year 1930 making them 91 years at the time of writing. This notion is further supported by the fact that the Animaniacs canon timeline, unlike the timelines of many other fictional universes, corresponds directly to our own, evidenced by the fact that in the 90s show we see them repeatedly make jokes and references relevant to 90s pop culture and then, in the first episode of the modern reboot they have to catch up with current events so that they can go on satirizing them.

What is, arguably, even more fucked up than the fact that the Warners can be considered legal adults and, at this point, senior citizens, is that the same opening scene implies that Wakko is actually the oldest sibling, followed by Yakko and then Dot. How you may ask? Well, let's look closely at the nameless WB artist drawing them

As we can see, Wakko is drawn first, then Yakko, then Dot. Grated, the age difference of a few milliseconds is negligible but it is still enough to challenge Yakko's claim to the title of 'the oldest Warner sibling'.

All that being said, does the fact that the Warners aren't technically minors within the shows' canon mean that people who sexualize, draw and/or write NSFW with them can be excused? NO. Why? Because they appear and behave as kids and sexualization of those child-like qualities is problematic and gross across the board regardless of canonical age and other factors.

Please don't misinterpret my intentions with here, I'm just being an insufferable nerd about this and that's literally it lol

A js589 fic data dive

What happens when you have a data nerd who writes a lot of AWAE 3x08 fix-it fic?

The world's crappiest data deep-dive, that's what! I originally speculated about just word count I've spent on 3x08 compared to other episodes, but I couldn't leave it at just that!

This got long, so, obvs, more under the cut.

Some caveats:

1) This is a rough and fairly unscientific analysis, but playing with pivot tables is fun. 2) The data was current as of 23 Sep 2021 3) This data does not take into account that Stranger Than Fiction has not been fully posted (but it's not a fix-it, so I'm not too worried about that fudging numbers.)

The "method" (how I chose what was included, and the tools)

1) Works must actually be meant as a fix-it. 2) Words/chapters are counted only when they "fix" something. Consequential chapters in multichapter works are not counted unless they also "fix" something. 3) Partial chapters contain material that "fixes" an event but also material that either recaps events as they happened or that are consequential to other fixes 4) Works must start within the episode they intend to "fix", not just "fix" the events after them (i.e. not diverge between episodes)

For chapter breakdowns, I literally had to click to each chapter and check the word count of the relevant bits in my word processor. Here's the results of that:

Observation 1: 3x06 has the shortest full chapter (649 words in chapter 3 of Inflection Points)

Observation 2: Only 3 partial chapters exist in this data set, and no chapters have episode overlap (at least as far as fixing is concerned)

Observation 3: Fix-its make up 97585 of the 464979 words of completed (but not necessarily published) fics I've written for AWAE. 3X08 fix-its specifically make up 32963 words of that count, so 33.78% of fix-it words and 7.09% of my AWAE word count overall. (Which, uh, tells you something.)

Observation 4: Of my 91 AWAE stories fully written (89 published), 25 (23 published) are fix-its. Other canon divergent fix (branching between episodes) come in second at 21 and Modern AU after that at 16.

Observation 5: 3x08 has a little more than 2.25x the next most "fixed" ep by word count (3x07)

(Yes, I am well aware it says "Count - Title" and not "Count - Chapter". There are reasons for this, but I assure you, it's the chapter count. This ain’t peer-reviewed science! This is one writer with enough knowledge to be moderately dangerous and a copy of Libre Office!)

Observation 6: 4 episodes have 5 or more chapters dedicated to them (and they're exactly the episodes you think they are—3x06, 3x07, 3X08, and 3x10)

Observation 7: Only 3 episodes have 5 or more unique works that "fix" them, however. 3x06 loses loses the honor because To Live a Life With No Regrets has 2 chapters dedicated to it and In Which A Crucial Conversation Occurs Much Earlier each has 2 full chapters and 1 partial chapter dedicated to it.

Observation 8: 3x05 gets the longest single chapter with a word count (In Which Reality Ensues Post-Dance Practice). Turns out some episodes take longer to "fix" than others!

Observation 9: 3x06 gets the highest cumulative word count within a title (e.g. word count summed over episode) within works (In Which a Crucial Conversation Occurs Much Earlier)

Observation 10: The longest partial chapter fix (chapter 6 of To Live a Life With No Regrets) has 98 more words than the total word count of the least-fixed episode by word count (3x01)

So.... yeah. I found that interesting. I had fun. I got to make pivot tables and play with colors!

Why Riverdale doesn’t work as a TV show-- but other TV shows in same or similar genres do

TV has slowly become more campy over the past couple of decades. The 90s started with Twin Peaks and ended with Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The 2010s gave birth to Teen Wolf, Riverdale, and then the Chilling Adventures of Sabrina.

Teen Wolf ended in 2017, with 81% overall on Rotten Tomatoes. The first season rated 68% and the last season rating 83%.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina ended in 2020, with 81% overall on Rotten Tomatoes. The first season rated 91% and the last season rating 78%.

Riverdale’s fifth season was supposed to come out this year (2021) but due to Covid-19 restrictions, nothing has aired yet. Nevertheless, it rates 86% overall on Rotten Tomatoes. The first season rates 88% and the last season aired, season 4, rates 84%. But this is on the Tomatometer, not the audience review scores. And isn’t the audience the most important part of all?

Teen Wolf - 83% on average audience viewing

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina - 74% on average audience viewing

Riverdale- 57% on average audience viewing

But maybe let’s start with the original campiness and why they work so well.

Spoilers for Twin Peaks, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Teen Wolf, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, and Riverdale below the cut

Twin Peaks is about a murder, and then another, at least in the first season. It’s quickly established that there’s something a little off with the town of Twin Peaks. Agent Cooper has some sort of supernatural dream very early on containing information of who the actual murderer of Laura Palmer is. It established supernatural tones quickly, and viewers know what they’re getting into early on, especially considering the first 15 minutes or so focus on the finding of Laura Palmer’s body. The characters were all fairly likeable, even if they made questionable decisions and in the 90s, this was new, exciting territory. Twin Peaks has now become a pop culture reference found in many media forms, even receiving a third season in 2017 with the return of some of the original cast.

Twin Peaks, while not hilarious, was rather good at dry humor, the line, “This is a town where a yellow light still means slow down instead of speed up.” coming to mind. That, combined with the writing, cinematography, and the compelling little stares, made for a TV show that hit 88% on the Tomatometer and 89% based on audience views.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer gave us a badass female protagonist who killed vampires throughout her lifetime. BTVS also quickly established elements of the supernatural in the first season and built upon it. There were multiple werewolf characters and Buffy herself dated two vampires, her other love interest being human but working for a government organization that studied supernatural creatures. In seasons 3 and 4, Buffy’s best friend, Willow, starts to dabble in spells and the occult and other witch characters, including Willow’s girlfriend, Tara, are introduced into the series. Coming on the tail end of the 90s, viewers were enthralled with the wit and brashness of some characters and the fact of the a protagonist that was allowed to be feminine and powerful at the same time. BTVS has an 82% on the Tomatometer and 92% based on audience views.

Basically, in terms of these two shows, the characters were likeable, the writing was rather witty, and the shows very quickly established what they were about, making them popular with viewers.

Now we come to the 2010s, starting with Teen Wolf.

Teen Wolf’s very first episode turned Scott McCall into a werewolf fairly early on in the episode and introduced a family of werewolf hunters, as well as --quote unquote-- “popular kids” Lydia and Jackson, and Scott McCall’s smartass best friend, Stiles Stilinski. The dialogue was fresh, the cinematography was rather dark, but overall a memorable first episode. They built upon this, season by season, and the acting and writing became a little more powerful and a little darker through every season. The characters changed but also stayed true to their roots and new characters were fairly likable when they were added. Teen Wolf told viewers what they were getting into from the very first episode and it was rather consistent throughout the rest of the show, that Scott and his friends would be facing monsters and only monsters. There would be a new threat each season but it would make sense from where each season respectively ended.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina also established what would be happening throughout the TV show. It would be about witches and the occult and fighting demons and going to hell. The writing could be cringy sometimes and essences of Riverdale leaked through (unavoidable, as the writer of Riverdale adapted Sabrina for the modern screen), but the show was overall consistent and the characters were appealing to the viewers, plus it gave representation to POC and LBTQ+ community. The show could become slow at times, but other than that, it was a solid TV show and did well on Netflix’s platform.

We arrive at Riverdale.

Riverdale’s first season started off well enough, with four high schoolers investigating the murder of Cheryl Blossom’s twin brother. It was a decent first season and the characters were fine, although there were a couple plotlines that seemed oddly dark for network TV. The second season, while still decent, had a plot line that revolved entirely around a serial killer that didn’t actually fit the classic definition of a serial killer. Both of these were likened to Twin Peaks, and there was an obvious Twin Peaks connection, with Madchen Amick, who played Shelly Johnson in 90s TV show, playing Betty Cooper’s mother in Riverdale.

Season 3 went wild, with a plotline that villainized a game similar to Dungeons and Dragons, had Archie go to jail and get attacked by a bear, Mrs. Blossom opened a brothel, while Veronica opened a speakeasy and introduced a cult run by Chad Michael Murray, which is an odd sentence to type if you’ve seen Gilmore Girls or The OC. This is also the season that gave us the line, “I dropped out in the fourth grade to run drugs for my nana.” “Then you haven’t known the triumphs and defeats, the epic highs and lows of high school football.” Season 4 gave us blackmailing, two teenagers running an alcohol business, creepy tapes with creepier masks and a Jughead--is--dead--but--not--really--and--Barchie--became--a--thing--for--a--hot--second plotline.

All four seasons are campy, just like the other shows, but not supernatural. This begs the question, why don’t people like Riverdale?

Looking at Riverdale and then the four other shows I mentioned, it’s because Riverdale isn’t consistent.

The first season established that murder would happen. That’s what people signed up for. They didn’t sign up for singing episodes or bear attacks. They signed up for teens solving murder, and viewers receive that with each season but they also get a bunch of weird, extended plotlines they didn’t ask for. The other shows stayed consistent with the content they delivered, while Riverdale didn’t--and, predictably, still won’t-- in the upcoming fifth season.

Riverdale also takes heavy influence from Twin Peaks, with The Maple Club being their version of One Eyed Jack’s, and both TV shows having a diner main characters frequent. Other similarities include the killers in season 2 being revealed to be fathers/uncles of main characters and the dual opening on Laura Palmer’s dead body and Jason Blossom’s. It’s hard to unsee it, which just adds to the oddness of the show overall.

That’s not to say the other TV shows aren’t connected. The actress who plays Hermione Lodge in Riverdale, Marisol Nichols, plays The Desert Wolf in Teen Wolf. Buffy the Vampire Slayer had a singing episode in their sixth season. It’s just terribly obvious when a show draws from the same influence over and over again, which Riverdale tends to do.

Twin Peaks, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Teen Wolf, and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina work because they are consistent, in content and character writing, which is just something Riverdale hasn’t mastered yet.

in lieu of a commonplace book

the first weekly roundup of 2021! very glad I began this posting project last week when I had actual things to talk about, because I spent this week in an untamed fugue state and knowing I’d want to write this has made me take breaks to think about other media!

reading I have a couple of different books on the boil right now, I borrowed Return of the Thief from @hematiterings and have ripped through the first quarter but I’m going to hold off expressing Thoughts until I’ve read more. Also spent some time with The Traveling Cat Chronicles which deserves to be read more slowly than I currently am. It’s prompting me to think a lot about translation, about how the translator has rendered the cat’s thoughts and speech into a register of english that feels less ~translated~ (more unaffected? more idiomatic?) than the humans themselves and some parts of the narration, and I really wish I had literally any Japanese at all to check what that might reflect in the original. I feel like this book is going to make me sad, which is why I’m reading it rapidly.

listening episodes 90 + 91 of Critical Role’s first campaign, Voice of the Tempest and Vox Machina Go to Hell, and the TalksMachina eps for both. here again, I’m trying mainly to push through these so that I can get on to the second campaign, which just feels disloyal! but it’s true! after a certain character left (which made me cry while taking a bath, curse you Sam Reigel), I started quietly mourning the whole party so that I’d be ready to let go, even though there’s actually a lot of content left still. Really grateful for TalksMachina actually, even if I was skeptical when I first saw them in the feed-- the fan questions are helping me think more about the events of the episodes when I’m not actually super tuned in, and helping me assess the importance of stuff.

watching so I finished the Untamed and immediately started watching the Untamed Special Edition on Youtube, rewatching the Netflix series from the beginning, and trying to convince people like @un-serial-writer to stream it with me... enough, this is not what you came here to talk about. @pep-squad-lizzie and I resumed our Wednesday night Haikyuu! sessions and finished the stuff on Netflix, and I’m very excited to see where the good good volley boys go next! nationals??! ah?! The ending of S2 was extremely tense and I’m still not sure I love how it went down-- you don’t want to win bc of your opponent’s mistake, you both want to do your best! YOI taught me that!-- but I have reflected and decided that it really had to have been a fluke that gave Karasuno the w, the match-up was too close otherwise. ugh.

playing Monday night was our D&D zoom ~holiday party~ where everyone came dressed up and I treated myself to a beer more than I usually have during a session, and we caught up to the Boss we’ve been Pursuing up the Mountain this whole time. Didn’t even end up killing her, though, because we got a talking to from a kindly but terrifying monk last time and our fighter took the ‘stop killing when you could communicate!’ lesson to heart. As a squishier bard, however, I spent at least two different rounds of the boss fight actually on fire so I was prepared to go for the jugular, but luckily we managed to subdue her and get out of combat without any of us dying. I think the next sesh is going to be mostly epilogue and I’m excited to see how we satisfy our mission without actually killing her?

making I glued my slipper back together where the sole was pealing off/ coming unstitched from the upper, and uhhhh that’s about it. going to have to revisit the starter soon, she is lonely :(

working on I may have failed horribly at doing paid work hours between Dec 28 and today and instead allowed mdzs / cql fic to nuke several complete days, but I did an hour of German translation each day for the last little while and I’ve worked on my lines for the Zoom play I’m going to be in next week. I still have to finish drafting that conference paper, also for next week, and make a conference schedule. And do some paid work hours. eek. January just started and I already can’t wait to get through it.

Anime chatter because I need a break from attempting to reach inbox zero at work. (I’m about 60% down, with only 477 emails in my inbox now.)

I finished reading the entire series of The Betrayal Knows My Name, which is beautiful and very fun and not a complete story wut. Apparently the mangaka had health issues in the middle of it, so I respect that she was able to finish a story arc, and also didn’t try to wrap things up (it wouldn’t have worked. This is a story in which people keep getting reincarnated over a millennia to fight demons and the main character is amnesiac for Unknown but possibly Love-Related Reasons in his past life and at best, the story ends 2/3 through). Instead, it ends at the end of one arc, but ugh I was planning on watching the anime afterwards, and now I think I’ll hold off.

(It’s a good manga, though. If you like shoujo action fantasies, it’s worth picking up. Perhaps there’s some good fanfic that will finish the story.)

I just started the Millionaire Detective - Balance: UNLIMITED and one episode in, the “AI uses money for the whims of one person to achieve anything” schtick has me thinking I’m watching a really weird AU of Eden of the East.

Two of my favorite shows I watched last year (Miss Kobayashi’s Dragon Maid and Zombie Land Saga) have second seasons that will premier this year! I will, however, be waiting (and hoping) for the dubs, since both were very good, but especially Ricco Fajardo as perpetually-running-on-seventeen-Red-Bulls manager Kotaro in ZLS.

Surprise enjoyable show Touken Ranbu: Hanamaru will get some films in the next couple of years. The mobile game that spawned it is also being released in English (currently [March 2021] you can preregister), but I am resisting temptation because my phone doesn’t need yet another app.

I think I am just not cut out for serious shows. I want to like them, but I’ve been trying to get through Cowboy Bebop for several months, and keep pushing it off to watch other stuff. Same with Trinity Blood, it just feels like a slog. And I can’t quite pinpoint why, because it’s not like I don’t enjoy the show in abstract. But I start watching, and then ending up fast-forwarding. Even 91 Days, which was really good, I didn’t look forward to picking back up like I did, well, pretty much anything else I’ve watched in the past year.

Like, everyone’s supposed to like Cowboy Bebop, right?

I’ve got several others on my to-watch list (Witch Hunter Robin, Wolf’s Rain, Trigun) that were big (ish) back in the 00′s, but my apathy toward the others doesn’t leave me feeling optimistic.
