"For 60 years, doctors and researchers have known two things that could have improved, or even saved, millions of lives. The first is that diets do not work. Not just paleo or Atkins or Weight Watchers or Goop, but all diets. Since 1959, research has shown that 95 to 98 percent of attempts to lose weight fail and that two-thirds of dieters gain back more than they lost. The reasons are biological and irreversible. As early as 1969, research showed that losing just 3 percent of your body weight resulted in a 17 percent slowdown in your metabolism鈥攁 body-wide starvation response that blasts you with hunger hormones and drops your internal temperature until you rise back to your highest weight. Keeping weight off means fighting your body鈥檚 energy-regulation system and battling hunger all day, every day, for the rest of your life.
The second big lesson the medical establishment has learned and rejected over and over again is that weight and health are not perfect synonyms. Yes, nearly every population-level study finds that fat people have worse cardiovascular health than thin people. But individuals are not averages: Studies have found that anywhere from one-third to three-quarters of people classified as obese are metabolically healthy. They show no signs of elevated blood pressure, insulin resistance or high cholesterol. Meanwhile, about a quarter of non-overweight people are what epidemiologists call 鈥渢he lean unhealthy.鈥 A 2016 study that followed participants for an average of 19 years found that unfit skinny people were twice as likely to get diabetes as fit fat people."
A surprising article to find on the Huffington post. I think, especially towards the end, there's still a saturation of healthism and diet talk (just of the "clean eating" variety), but the information about weight discrimination is absolutely on point, especially within the medical field ignoring decades of research.
Not only do we know that weight loss isn't sustainable or possible, we also know that weight discrimination kills, in a myriad of ways. If you actually care about "health" then start unlearning your weight bias NOW and realize that fat people are just people who are a different shape.
And this article doesn't even touch on "the obesity paradox"(the fact that fat people survive heart attacks and injuries BETTER THAN thin people) or the fact that dieting, especially "yo-yo dieting," is a better predictor for heart disease than weight, and that many of the fat people who have cardiovascular diseases have a long history of dieting that (understandably) didn't work.
encouraged to rb but fatphobes will just be blocked.

Friendly reminder that it鈥檚 OKAY if you鈥檙e incredibly productive one day but can鈥檛 get out of bed the next. That does not necessarily mean that you are regressing with your progress.
Our energy comes and goes, and it takes a while and a lot of practice to find a perfect balance. Take time to recharge yourself without feeling guilty for it!
Chores can wait, friends can wait. You are the most important person in your life, so feel free to take your time to heal.

You don't have to earn your right to eat. This is not a reward nor is it a punishment. I am so sorry it came down to this way of seeing food, but please don't give up on the fact that you can recover and that it is not too late for you.

Try not to take other peoples reactions personally. You never know what a person is experiencing that changes their perception. Their apathy, disinterest, nit picking, etc. is more about them than it is you. Take a deep breathe and try to move past it.

Boundaries for ED recoverers can look like this:
"Please don't talk to me about your diet, diet culture is not good for me."
"If you continue to make comments about my body, I'm going to walk away."
"I know you're trying to be helpful, but hearing about your diet tips is not good for me. I am stating a boundary."
"I know you meant it as a compliment, but please don't focus on my body so much. It makes me feel self-conscious."
"Please don't make comments about what I eat. It makes me feel extremely self-conscious. If you continue to do this, I will not have meals with you in the future."
"You're not my therapist/doctor/nutritionist, so your advice is not relevant or helpful to me."
I might post more as they come to me. Feel free to use these freely and don't worry about offending others. Your health is your priority!

yes, food is fuel. but it is also for pleasure. it is also enjoyable. it is also emotional, personal, intimate. food is fuel, yes, but that does not make you a machine. you are allowed to eat something just because you want it, just because it sounds good, regardless of the nutritional properties. food is a shared human experience bridging across our entire existence. to reduce it to something as simplistic as fuel denies us the emotional connection that food contains. food is fuel, yes, but it is also so much more than that.
