Tired is when you're sick of life, or feel weighed down by the stuff around you. Sleepy is when you want to go to bed. That's how me and my friend do it, anyhow. At this point, I'm fucking exhausted to the point where I feel too tired to let it out but im gonna anyways. There's bits in here that I can't tell my friend, or anyone, so i'm hoping bc this is anonymous i can let it out. Right, intro done lol. Onto the story. Last night, i have no idea what time, maybe five or six, (all i know is this

thing ended at 7pm), my mom storms out of the room and comes back holding a bottle of water and her bag. She proceeds to tell my dad she found the bottle at the bottom of my bed, (basically im not supposed to have anything at the bottom of my bead bc asian tradition believes that youre on top of it and thats dirty or whatever). Then she pulls out my school photo, puts it on the table and tells my dad to look at it. Starts ranting about how I never listen, i look horrible, worst photo i've ever taken.

Basically, I go to a private school, and they think I should look good, and then they spent some time lecturing me about how i was supposed to look right when i was in the school, I look like a boy, i act like a boy, my hair's a mop, I look like a hooligan. Start talking about when i dress to go to school, how my shoes aren't polished and one of them has laces that show the white inner. How my hair's messy at the back, if i saw someone in jeans and someone in a suit in the street, who would i think was respectful? They told me they shouldn't have let me into the school, they loved me too much, that's why, they should have let me go to this public school that has a reputation for being a mess, that i belong there, waste of money, they regret letting me go here, thought i was a respectable girl.

Dad asked me again, who wouldd i think was respectful, the jeans or the suit, and I told him I don't know. We'll get to that later, but at that moment he sneered and snorted and looked at my mom. 'says she doesnt know' he jeers. I'd meant it as in 'i have no idea, please help me'. He took it as 'she doesn't know, and doesn't give a fuck'. I don't know how to look proper. they never taught me. they tell me that something looks good so i wear it. mom still buys my clothes for me. I have no fucking clue what looks proper and what doesn't.

Anyways, somehow they moved onto uni, and my current work, and how I pull all-nighters and how dad thought i was smart but nopw he has no hope, how he sees me get up in the morning and know i'm going to fail the assessment, how i get distracted, how i take too long to shower, how i never learn, how i never help them around the house, they do everything for me and if he was in my shoes then he would work until 'smoke came out' (vietnamese saying), how he would be so grateful but i'm not and they're going to leave me (which is a normal threat for them lol) and how they're going to die (another normal threat, dad has a lifelong illness and mom has been struggling with leukaemia for years) and they're not going to pay for uni if i get a stupid degree, only if i get a good degree like they want which will actually help me (law), if i want to become an engineer (something im considering) then i can pay for it myself, then again it's not like i'm even going to get into uni, when they look at me, they have to think of the girl i was when i was five because if they think about me now they feel sad, they won't look at me because I make them sad, they had so much hope for me, now down the drain, no, down to the sewers, look at my cousins going out, one of them had piercings and infections and almost got tattoos and is a nurse in a prison with a husband who stressed her out so much she passed out at work, do i want that, that's what i will get if i dont work, basd job, assisstants have to buy pads for their bosses, horrible child, this will end one of two ways, one i listen to them and come back years later to thank them or i'll look up at the stars and wish that i'd listened to them and they regret having me and caring for me, if only they'd been better parents, they'd been too lenient, but i don't care do i because if i cared it'd show in my working to please them and i haven't done that so that means i don;t care about them.

Dad told me it was too late to change, then switches to tell me it's not too late, they ramble on about my internet use, (i have to ask them for internet) and i'm not acutlalyu doping work on it, i'm just fucking around, they kjnow, they know, i can lie all i want nbut it's true. Horrible child, they'll die, they'll die, That's the end of the conversation, we're not going to talk about it anymore. No, stop talking. I'm going to tell you this until i die. I'm going to keep saying it, beccause it's better that i say it and you not listen than i dont say it and regret not saying it. (okay, i can;t currently remember anything else of what they said lol.). By the way, you wanna know abt

ok lets hope to god this sends then. i think i know where i was up to - 'do you want to know about what was wrong with the photo' i think was meant to be that. anyways, yeah. guess what was wrong with it. i had a fucking splinge. like my hair was parted and a bit of the part was split. that's all i can see that's wrong with it. maybe my hair looked oily? idk but that's all i noticed. also said something after that about do u remember when dad asked me abt who did i think looked better the suit.

also can i add something i just remembered which is that one of them put folders on my shelf and mom told me she knew i put them there to hide what i was looking at on my laptop from her when i??? didnt??? put them??? there??? in the first place???? (the layout of my room allows the folders to block the view of someone from the door basically) i put new folders there after i think my dad put them there but i didnt originally put them there??? sorry it was a full ask rant and i have no idea what the freak i typed and what i didnt lol. but u get the gist i think. big fat lecture.

i am tired. my eyes were puffy and there was like this pool of snot floating on top of this pool of tears if you did get the ask sorry u had to read that twice. :(. i mean even tho u didnt see it i was able to let it all out. not sure if it made me feel better about anything but being able to do it at all is rlly nice. Thank you for that.

No wonder you’re tired, nonnie... I’m really glad you could get all of this off your chest, and really sorry that you have to hear those awful things about yourself coming from your parents.

I’m a white European, so I don’t share many of your experiences and I don’t know how it is to live in a Vietnamese family, but I hope it’s okay to compare it a little bit with my experiences in my (very Christian) family--if not, you can absolutely skip the next paragraph!

I have had a bunch of conversations with my therapist about traditions, religion, and misogyny, because since I cut my mother off, my grandfather has lectured me many times about how I am a bad daughter for looking out for myself and putting my life first instead of being devoted to my mother’s wants and needs. He told me that she’s sick and I’m horrible for not caring about that and abandoning her, and that if she doesn’t love me, I just have to work harder until I "crack her walls”. (As if I haven’t tried already, and as if she didn’t use her very mental illness as an excuse to abuse me). My therapist basically told me that sometimes, being the Disney villain in some people’s stories means you’re doing something right, because their vision of what’s right and what’s wrong (especially when it comes to daughters and women in general) is designed to hurt you, to make you put your family before yourself. That it’s never wrong to put yourself and your needs first, and that kids don’t owe their parents anything just because the parents brought them into this world--that was the parents’ choice, not the kid’s, and therefore it’s the parents’ responsibility to care for their kid, whoever that kid turns out to be; and not the kid’s responsibility to be the model child that the parents had in mind or to care for them.

Your parents belittling you for things you have little to no control over and accusing you of being responsible for their future deaths, for not knowing things that haven’t been explained to you, for not living up to their expectations without even giving you a chance to try, and for not “working for them as hard as they would in your place”, are all red flags of emotional abuse. Accusing you of things you don’t do and constantly drilling into your mind that they “know” you’re a horrible person who doesn’t want to learn or change is a red flag too, and probably an excuse to take the guilt off their shoulders for not taking the time to guide you in life and to explain anything to you before accusing you of not knowing it already. “It’s too late” puts the blame on you, but what it actually means is probably something along the lines of “It’s easier to scream at you than to put realistic expectations on you and then help you achieve them while respecting your boundaries and allowing you to make mistakes, but I don’t want to feel guilty about it, so let’s pretend you’re a lost cause, yeah?”

I used to go to a private school too, and my mother repeatedly told me that was the reason she struggled economically and that I had ruined her life. It wasn’t until I talked about it in therapy that I realised that I never had a choice in what school I went to. Same as I never had a choice in anything my mother decided for me. So how could I be to blame for the consequences of those decisions? And how can you? If they buy you certain clothes, then they have no right to criticise how you look in them. If they chose to put you in a private school, then the money spent is on them, not you. You shouldn’t have to “prove” you’re worth their decisions for you or their basic care for you--they chose to give you that unconditionally the moment they decided to have you in the first place, and if they refuse to give it or threaten to take it away, it’s becuase they’re neglectful and/or abusive, not because something intrinsic about you justifies it. You’re not a bad kid; you’re just a normal kid with very bad parents. And I’m really sorry that you have to put up with them. You deserve better 😔

what the sokovia accords really are

a quick study bc what the fuck guys

here goes:

The currently known regulations established by the Sokovia Accords include:

Any enhanced individuals who agree to sign must register with the United Nations and provide biometric data such as fingerprints and DNA samples.

- Any who AGREE to sign. I dont think this is asking too much. If ur working for a government agency, if ur using force in any way during ur work, I think its fair to ask you to give them biometric data. And if its only so in case there is an investigation afterwards (which their always should be imo) its clear distinguishable who was where and did what.

- Also, what if someone suddenly decides "something happened, im changing sides, imma take revenge" (no matter if its a concious decision or brainwashing 👀)? Would probably be good to have some data and perhaps be able to track them. If its managable or not- hm. But theres no harm in giving that data if ur only goal is working towards a safer world.

Those with secret identities must reveal their legal names and true identities to the United Nations.

- Oh nooo, no unknown vigilantes that might make mistakes while fighting on their own and then cant be held accountable? No one is perfect, OF COURSE, but from a realistic pov I wouldnt feel safe with someone running around fighting whoever-

And I know we love the romantic comic fantasy of "everybody can be a hero", and I swear I love it as much as you! But imagine ur just a normal person while spiderman is swinging above ur head- or even imagine ur spiderman- and then one tiny thing wents wrong. The normal person is crushed, dead or paralysed- Spiderman is in shock because that was Not supposed to happen and he is so so sorry!- But what now?

- If enhanced people were to work under an organisation (that is ideally not as shady and riddled with Hydra as Shield was) then those incidents would be covered. Yes it would still be terrible but Spiderman would get mandatory therapy session to work through it and the normal person... well if theyre dead then i guess the organisation would at least pay for the funeral and compensate the family (like if they were the only one providing for partner and kids), additionally a conversation between both partys if possible.

-Basically: nothing can be swept under the rug. The enhanced people can be protected!!! PLUS they only have to reveal their identity to the UN and not the world.

- This would benefit the person with power too, you realize that, dont you?

You cant possibly know how much power you actually have. Is there gonna be another level-up for you? Are you Jean Grey? We wouldnt want to repeat that specific clusterfuck, right?

But if you submit to an analysis it can help find ways to train you, circle ur weaknesses, etc.

Yes the UN would know ur threat level- and that would be bad why? Are you planning to attack Them? If not then no problem. Instead they would know if they should send you in or not- depending... you dont need a level 5 when there is a cat in a tree. We want to avoid unnecessary damage, thank you. If ur a level 1 you also dont want to be on the front lines against an alien invasion for example- better help evacuate non-powered individuals and not die immediately.

- Also worth mentioning: this is all still part of the "if you agree to sign" paragraph

Any enhanced individuals who sign are prohibited from taking action in any country other than their own, unless they are first given clearance by either that country's government or by a United Nations subcommittee.

- I really want to think I dont have to say anything here but I feel I do.

No I do not want a guy wearing an american flag running around in my country if my government didnt explicitely allow it. Same for a giant tin man or a creepy spiderlady.

- If anything then this paragraph would help improve the communication between countries. Yes people fear that in emergencies this will all take too long but 1) thats not the Accords fault and 2) I think we already have situations like this irl and most times it does work.

Governments are forbidden from deploying enhanced individuals outside of their own national borders, unless those individuals are given clearance as described above. The same rule also applies to non-government organizations that operate on a global scale (including S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers).

As a corollary, they will not be allowed to participate in any active missions undertaken by private or governmental law enforcement/military/intelligence organizations (such as S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Avengers).

The use of technology to bestow individuals with innate superhuman capabilities is strictly regulated, as is the use and distribution of highly advanced technology (such as Asgardian and Chitauri weaponry).

However, individuals with advanced prostheses do not seem to be considered "enhanced", even if their prostheses give them capabilities beyond those of ordinary humans.

Phantom Dragon

Imagine being on of the things/people that make Ikebukuro so special.

Warnings: It's me, so swearing. I'm a slut for Light Fury's, sorry. And being obsessed with something (for me) means crossing it over with almost every fandom I know.

There's so much that makes Ikeburkuro stand out from other cities. Sure it might not be the biggest or most populated city in the world, but you know what they say, "Quality over quantity."

It's the people that make this city so unique: you've got The Headless Rider, Saika (who some still argue is just a myth), the strongest man in the world Ikebukuro, everyone's most hated favorite information broker, and heck even some of the gangs help make the city widely infamous.

And then there's you.

You only came recently.

Some time after that big fight that landed Masaomi in the Hospital.

You hadn't arrived there by normal means- traveling internationally involves medical records and documentation in order to make sure that, health wise, you were okay to travel to another country. BUT because you aren't completely human, and have a little somthin' else, any form of testing might come up or appear outside the normal ranges for a human being (little things like taking your temperature might be alarming to medical professionals).

So you got there by paying someone to stow you away on a boat. Unfortunately getting somewhere by shifty means, ment you had to hire some shifty people, and that ment they couldn't always be trusted to keep their mouths shut - especially after they thought they saw something.

That being said, of course Izaya knew about you the day you arrived.

Correction

He knew of you, but not about you. He only knew what he had been told and that only made his interest in you deepen.

"Someone's arrived in Ikebukuro who might add some extra weight to the scale- maybe not on one side or the other, but perhaps in a new direction."

Oh color him interested.

For about a month or so, you were able to live quietly and without being seen while you were... *cough cough* having fun being yo majestic dragon shifting self.

The first sighting happened on one of the days when Celty was being hunted down ceaselessly.

Someone got their hands on one of those giant guns that shoots out a big net, and they had the mind to try and use it on Celty.

Let's just say their aim was off

And you, in all your curious glory wondering why so many thugish-looking bikers were ganging up on one woman, were gliding around kinda low.

Then it happened. You were shot down, but at first no one could see you and for a second they thought the net was faulty.

But Celty knew otherwise.

She was able to use her powers to help you get away without being seen by the people in your immediate vicinity, but she could do nothing about the people in the surrounding buildings.

So of course someone had seen you and gotten video evidence before you seemed to disappear into thin air.

It took only a few hours for the footage to go viral - with some people stoked to see that such a creature existed in their home town, while others were skeptical of the video being real.

Izaya was giddy as fuck, because this must be what that one guy was talking about.

Shinra wasn't sure if it was real, but then again his girlfriend is a Dullahan so why the hell not?

Shizuo was there when Celty set you free.

Anri was a bit more on the indifferent side, she wasn't sure how she felt about the video. If it was fake it didnt change a thing, but what if it was real? Her school girl mind could only imagine.

Masaomi cracked jokes about there being a princess in town, and that was why there was a dragon here.

And as always Mikado was a bit late to the party.

Let's talk about the people who know about you- and I'm not talking about people who saw the video, no. I mean people who looked at you and just got a sixth sense or figured it out.

Simon: Just seemed to know somehow? He seems kinda like the guy who knows more than he let's on? So people just don't really think much of him at first glance. He said something to you when you stopped by for a bite to eat that just made you freeze, "Sushi is good and easy on stomach before and after long flight, no?" Oh...

Celty: She had never actually seen you shift, but when she met you she also just knew. She got this hair standing up on the back of her neck feeling, and it took her a few more interactions to figure it out, but she was one of the faster ones to the draw.

Shizuo: The timeline of the viral videos and him seeing you (a new face in Ikebukuro) around now had bothered him. It seemed very coincidental and everytime he saw you or that damn video he thought about it long and hard, and eventually he put the pieces together. Just because he's strong, doesn't make him dumb.

Izaya: One of the last people to know, though not from a lack of trying I can promise you that. Even Mikado and his friends, and Erika and her group knew about you before he did (mainly because Celty and the others told them after convincing you they were trust worthy). After managing to make friends with you, Celty and her friends did everything they could to keep you hidden away from the information broker, and that normally ment one of them being with you when you went out into the city. Celty would be damned if she let Izaya dig up your information and hold it over your head like he did to her. Of course he connected the dots when he questioned why his dear little Celty took a sudden interest in a nobody newbie. Being friends with them was probably your downfall to be honest.

Now let's talk about all the things that come with being an undocumented [I guess] dragon shifter.

God forbid you get sick, and I don't mean, "Oh look I've got a runny nose," sick i mean- coughing fit, feels like your dying sick. All I can say is fire, fire everywhere. Hope your neighbors aren't nosy.

It's kinda hard to get a good job? Everything needs proof of identity and since you aren't from their you dont have things they would normally ask for, you also dont have a work Visa saying that it's okay your there.

Sure you can get hired under the table, but keep in mind if anything goes wrong (and not necessarily with you) you'll be the first one your boss gets rid of incase people start snooping around.

You do a lot of job hopping, apartment hopping, and sometimes squatting, till you're finally able to get a good job.

Honestly being a dragon helps you save a lot on food sometimes- you can just go hunting yo.

Once you make friends with the crew, getting a decent paying job is easier and you bounce between working deliveries with Celty and debt collecting with Tom and Shizuo.

Kinnosuke, that hard ass motorcycle cop that gives Celty problems, gives you problems as well. Of course he wanted to know what kind of people the headless rider hung out with, so after he saw the two of you together a few times on the street he flagged you down on your walk home from work (Yes, you walk), and asked for your ID. He wasnt heartless, just a man of the law, so he understood that getting a new ID could take a while. When you gave him the ID from where you previously lived, he politely asked for a Visa or proof of citizenship in Japan/Ikebukuro.

Oh, no

It was on the second you ran for a nearby ally, turned into a damn dragon, and flew away.

"Do you have a license to fly?!"

"Do you have a permit to fly within city limits?!"

After that, you would fly to the nearest ally of your destination for anything because at least he can't get to you in the sky, and you can still hide.

"Its not the same as flying a plane you idiot!"

What are your thoughts on the comparison of John Walker and Frank Castle. Some say they're both similar but I dont believe that considering John seems to do what he wants and kills seemingly anyone he wants too. But Frank has a clear idea of who he wants to/ will kill and who he will not touch.

I feel like a real bitch right now because this anon asked me this back in April and I'm answering now like a dumb dumb because I forgot.

Thank you to whoever sent this, if you want to talk more or give me your opinion on it all my inbox is always open. Also super sorry if this shit doesn't make sense it's 12am and I'm dyslexic. But I really loved answering.

I think the only similarity between them is that they both have a military background and have both been fucked over by that same organisation that they once devoted their lives too.

In terms of morals and values there is a difference between them. I feel like John seems to have this need to prove to himself (and to the world) that he's a good person because of what he's done in his military career. I think his values, on paper, align with what they want 'captain America' to be but in reality they don't.

However with frank I feel like he doesn't need to prove to anyone that he is a good person, I think he already knows (but not in a arrogant way). I think the love and support he got from his family and billy made him very secure in that sense. I also think that because of his family he has stronger, precise values. He knows what is right and wrong and will fight for it, he's open to hear opinions.

Frank castle is man who thinks he's evil but in reality is a good person whereas John walker is a man who thinks he's a good person but in reality is a evil person. I think their support systems have a role to play in it.

I think the characters thoughts on being good or not shows the reasoning for how both characters kill. When John walker kills it seems to come across selfish and arrogant (much like America) like he doesn't seem to care about the repercussions or if bystanders gets hurt.

But with Frank its precise, he chooses who he wants and kills. He try's to make sure that that bystanders don't get hurt. Like in season 2 daredevil, when he comes to the hospital to kill grotto, he specifically only aims for grotto. He could have very easily caused a bloodbath in that hospital but he doesn't, he doesn't harm anyone whose unarmed.

Yet when we see john walker fight he very easily, without hesitation, kills a flag smasher who is unarmed (yeah sure his best friend just got killed but you would expect him to have a little self control, but the fact that he doesn't shows that he knows he's above the law).

A list of rejections of famous authors was circulating on Tumblr awhile back and, because Is It Fake was in exams at the time, Is It Fake got really into debunking them. It has now been more than a year and Is It Fake is just gonna put it up and let this roll.

See, they’re all or almost all from Rotten Rejections, a book written with a marvelous disregard for facts, and they’ve therefore been in circulation for more than twenty-five years. Some of them are entirely true; some of them are totally fake; a lot of them appear only in Rotten Rejections but can’t otherwise be disproven. Many of the stories behind them are fantastic.

As a general note, although this was only really useful for Plath, if you enjoy this we recommend “Publication is Not Recommended: From the Knopf Archives,” which is available on Project MUSE if you’ve got access and is just… it’s wonderful. Blanche Knopf was a riot.

Sylvia Plath: There certainly isn’t enough genuine talent for us to take notice.

Not only true, but actually much worse than depicted here. Internal rejection only. Emily Dickinson: [Your poems] are quite as remarkable for defects as for beauties and are generally devoid of true poetical qualities.

True! Thomas Niles to Thomas Wentworth Higginson, June 10, 1890— the brackets are wrong, because he was addressing another possible publisher, to say that he thought it would be “unwise to perpetuate” the poems, oh my STARS.

Ernest Hemingway (on The Torrents of Spring): It would be extremely rotten taste, to say nothing of being horribly cruel, should we want to publish it.

True, and directly to Hemingway himself. To F Scott Fitzgerald he managed to get up an “I am less violently opposed to Torrents of Spring than anyone else who has read it” but to Hemingway himself, nope, full no.

William Faulkner: If the book had a plot and structure, we might suggest shortening and revisions, but it is so diffuse that I don’t think this would be of any use. My chief objection is that you don’t have any story to tell. And two years later: Good God, I can’t publish this!

True. Both are true. They are so true.

The first refers to Sartoris/Flags in the Dust, and the story is really funny and sad. Faulkner sent it to Horace Liveright (his publisher) with enormous confidence: he called it the “damdest best book you’ll look at this year” and tried to ensure at this early stage that the printer not screw up his punctuation (“he’s been punctuating my stuff to death; giving me gratis quotation marks and premiums of commas I dont need.”) He also insisted that the title was perfect and that he had designed his own dust jacket which he would send by separate cover. Anyway, bye, he was going on a hunting trip, he looked forward to Liveright’s glowing acceptance!

Liveright did not exactly… do that. Besides the quote above he also noted how much he hated Mosquitoes, Faulkner’s last book, and how disappointed he was w/this one and how much he really wanted Faulkner not to submit it anywhere else, in case he got blacklisted, because the book was so, so bad.

The second is about Sanctuary, a book Faulkner hated and described as a “cheap idea…deliberately executed to make money.” The full rejection, according to Faulkner in his introduction to the book, was “Good God, I can’t publish this. We’d both be in jail.”

Edgar Allan Poe: Readers in this country have a decided and strong preference for works in which a single and connected story occupies the entire volume.

Not quite the exact quote, because “(especially fiction)” should appear after “works” and “entire” should be “whole”— but true. Harper & Brothers rejected Tales from the Folio Club in 1836 with this phrasing, the second of their three reasons for turning the stories down. The first was that a lot of them had been printed already, and the third was that the papers were too “learned and mystical,” like spooky bonbons.

Poe responded to this by writing The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym, which he privately referred to as a “very silly book”, and which is a classic of American literature.

MIXED TRUE/FALSE

Jack London: [Your book is] forbidding and depressing.

Sort of true. This rejection is from the Atlantic on the 3rd of May, 1900, it’s about “The Law of Life”, and it was a lot nicer than this, because according to Ellery Sedgwick’s "A History of the Atlantic Monthly, 1857-1909: Yankee Humanism at High Tide”, this was a period in which the Atlantic was being very ruthless and cynical about what would run, because depressing things didn’t sell commercially.

The full quote is, “We have heartily liked the vigor of it and the breadth of treatment with which you have written it. But the subject is forbidding—in fact seems to us depressing, and so the excellent craftsmanship of it has not changed our mind."

Stephen King (on Carrie): We are not interested in science fiction which deals with negative utopias. They do not sell.

True, but not about Carrie. It’s from Donald A. Wollheim at Ace Books and it’s about the Richard Bachman book The Running Man, which King had written after Carrie got rejected basically everywhere in the world. “The book, unfortunately, was not fantastic,” he later commented, which might’ve been because he wrote it over a weekend in a “low rage and simmering despair.” Thanks to the Stephen King Companion for this one.

UNATTESTED (AND, ONE SUSPECTS, NOT REAL)

Rudyard Kipling: I’m sorry Mr. Kipling, but you just don’t know how to use the English language.

Unattested. ID’d as the publisher of the San Francisco Examiner or Call writing in 1889, or is it 1899? Yeah, probs not, and Is It Fake couldn’t find it.

That said, the Call fucking hated Kipling. For example, the San Francisco Call did write about Kipling in 1899; it castigated him for his poem “the White Man’s Burden,” saying, “the white man’s burden is to set and keep his own house in order. It is not required of him to upset the brown man’s house under pretesce of reform and then whip him into subjection whenever he revolts at the treatment.” (Among other sources, can be found here.)

Another review of “The Lesson” from 1901 opens "KIPLING'S latest poem, 'The Lesson,’ must be very gratifying to Mr. Alfred Austin, for, if it does not confirm Austin's right to the office of Poet Laureate, it at least shows that Kipling has no better right.”

Dr. Seuss: Too different from other juveniles on the market to warrant its selling.

Unattested. But he was indeed rejected 27 times for his first book.

The Diary of Anne Frank: The girl doesn’t, it seems to me, have a special perception or feeling which would lift that book above the ‘curiosity’ level.

Unattested. The diary was rejected by 15 publishers before publication, but Is It Fake can’t find any of them who specifically said this. Here’s one from Knopf:

In the summer of 1950, Alfred A. Knopf Inc. turned down the English-language rights to a Dutch manuscript after receiving a particularly harsh reader’s report. The work was “very dull,” the reader insisted, “a dreary record of typical family bickering, petty annoyances and adolescent emotions.” Sales would be small because the main characters were neither familiar to Americans nor especially appealing. “Even if the work had come to light five years ago, when the subject was timely,” the reader wrote, “I don’t see that there would have been a chance for it.”

Joseph Heller (on Catch–22): I haven’t really the foggiest idea about what the man is trying to say… Apparently the author intends it to be funny – possibly even satire – but it is really not funny on any intellectual level … From your long publishing experience you will know that it is less disastrous to turn down a work of genius than to turn down talented mediocrities.

Unattested. Catch-22 (or as it was called at the time, Catch-18) was rejected over and over again, but this exact language is just vapor.

On the other hand, we have some of the language of acceptance, thanks to Vanity Fair:

“I … love this crazy book and very much want to do it,” Gottlieb said. Candida Donadio was delighted by his enthusiasm. Finally, someone got it! “I thought my navel would unscrew and my ass would fall off,” she often said to describe her happiness when negotiations went well with an editor.

And this incredible rejection from Evelyn Waugh:

Dear Miss Bourne:

Thank you for sending me Catch-22. I am sorry that the book fascinates you so much. It has many passages quite unsuitable to a lady’s reading

You are mistaken in calling it a novel. It is a collection of sketches—often repetitious—totally without structure.

Much of the dialogue is funny. You may quote me as saying: “This exposure of corruption, cowardice and incivility of American officers will outrage all friends of your country (such as myself) and greatly comfort your enemies.”

George Orwell (on Animal Farm): It is impossible to sell animal stories in the USA.

Unattested. It was rejected for a lot of reasons, but most of the ones I can find histories of were basically for it being anti-USSR at a time when the Russians were war allies. One publisher was basically ordered not to run it so as not to hurt the war effort, by somebody who later turned out to be a Soviet spy, like a lot of people in wartime Britain.

If you want to read T. S. Eliot rejecting Animal Farm for being too pro-Communist (not a joke) (jazz hands), you can find that here.

Vladimir Nabokov (on Lolita): … overwhelmingly nauseating, even to an enlightened Freudian … the whole thing is an unsure cross between hideous reality and improbable fantasy. It often becomes a wild neurotic daydream … I recommend that it be buried under a stone for a thousand years.

Unattested. Could be real and internal, but it was never given to Nabokov, because Nabokov gave us a recounting of his rejections, and this wasn’t in them.

Is It Fake’s fave bit: "Some of the reactions were very amusing: one reader suggested that the firm might consider publication if I turned my Lolita into a twelve-year-old lad and had him seduced by Humbert, a farmer, in a barn, amidst gaunt and arid surroundings, all this set forth in short, strong, realistic sentences. (He acts crazy. We all act crazy, I guess. I guess God acts crazy. Etc.)"

Richard Bach (on Jonathan Livingston Seagull): will never make it as a paperback. (Over 7.25 million copies sold)

Unattested, and Is It Fake doesn’t even have anything interesting to say about it.

H.G. Wells (on The War of the Worlds): An endless nightmare. I do not believe it would “take”…I think the verdict would be ‘Oh don’t read that horrid book’. And (on The Time Machine): It is not interesting enough for the general reader and not thorough enough for the scientific reader

Unattested. It is the personal opinion of Is It Fake that they’re both false. The Time Machine was actually commissioned as a novel, so it’s hard to see why it’d receive a rejection like that, and both stories were serialized before publication, not run in book form, so the War of the Worlds one doesn’t ring true. Fun supplemental fact--War of the Worlds was immediately pirated upon release and rerun as “Fighters from Mars,” localized to New York and Boston respectively and run with a story called “Edison’s Conquest of Mars” about how Thomas Edison took over Mars and Is It Fake is not making this up.

Herman Melville (on Moby Dick): We regret to say that our united opinion is entirely against the book as we do not think it would be at all suitable for the Juvenile Market in [England]. It is very long, rather old-fashioned…

This must be false (no one ever appears to have been under the delusion that Moby-Dick was a children’s serial, and in fact he got it printed kind of as like an art book, a 500-book edition with great critical acclaim and no sales) but since one can’t actually prove that it is, “unattested,” but Is It Fake would like to register the strongest possible objections to anyone who would bother to make up a reason for Herman Melville to be sad, dude was like high king and priest of making his own ass sad in the desert, leave him alone

If for some reason your life has been missing negative reviews of Moby-Dick you can find the full spectrum of praise to castigation here. Personal fave goes to the writer who said “There is nevertheless in it, as we have already hinted, abundant choice reading for those who can skip a page now and then, judiciously....”

PROVABLY FAKE >:(

Oscar Wilde (on Lady Windermere’s Fan): My dear sir, I have read your manuscript. Oh, my dear sir.

False. Is It Fake can’t believe even people talking about Oscar Wilde are getting the Oscar Wilde effect. It’s attributed to a bunch of people, but the oldest attribution found was to John Clayton, from Albert Chevalier’s autobiography of 1895, as

“My dear sir, I have read your play. Oh! my dear sir! Yours truly, John Clayton.”

As Albert Chevalier was a comedian & music hall performer and this is part of a collection of anecdotes, one is perhaps not super convinced this was ever real, from anyone. (There’s also a fwithout the last line: “My dear sir, I have read your play. Yours, Fred Thompson.”

Gertrude Stein spent 22 years submitting before getting a single poem accepted.

Possibly true, in that Is It Fake can’t find the date of publication of her first poem, but not substantively true, in that Three Lives ran when she was 35, so unless we’re counting whatever she submitted at 13, this is false. Stein was constantly and continually rejected though. Like just absolutely constantly, and crushingly too. This rejection letter is particularly amazing.

I’m really happy to see Ruby calling out the strategy. I liked that they decided to emphasize Jaune’s role as a strategist by having the others regard him as one, but I do miss Ruby calling the shots, because she’s very good at it.

I posted on reddit today:

Hi. I'm B[22F]. And I just realized that... I might have Nparents.

I started realizing it only recently when I picked up "Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents" by Lindsay Gibson. I picked it up because I was in a rough patch again. Even rougher than usual actually. My behavioral problems are acting up. The pandemic is not helping.

But anyway, after finishing the book, my life finally made sense.

I'm an avid journal writer. I have a collection of notebooks that spanned my childhood. I was closed off, angry, irritable, depressed... and even attempted a few times.... I always felt bad because I didn't have any reason to be! Until recently, I thought I was okay? I had food, shelter and we could afford things. I look back at my childhood now and realize that it wasn't as happy as I thought it was.

I thought their behavior was normal you know? I thought it was normal to put everything aside and serve our parents. I thought it was normal to give up the things you love and "become an adult" for the sake of being successful. I even felt a twinge of narcissism when I was praised for being "so mature" and "so grown up" compared to my other siblings when all I was just doing was following their rules. They promised me so much that it was the only way to success and happiness.

They shamed my older brother and sister for being "so rebellious" and "troublesome". They drilled it into me that I was not to become like them. My dad always spared no words when it came to them. On car rides home, he'd talk weirdly, saying things like "our genes are superior" and that "your brother and sister aren't as smart as you" or "you're far more intellectual so uou need to do better". (It might be a good time to mention that my older siblings are my step-siblings. We don't share a dad. also, now I realize my ndad kinda reminds me of Ozai haha.)

I asked my dad about it once. Why he talked badly of my siblings. He'd deny everything and say he'd never say any of that. I should have noticed that huge red flag.

I used to believe him. It's like I turned into a miniature version of him at age 12. I thought about all the opportunities my siblings wasted and resented them. My brother went to lawschool for three days before packing it up and travelling around. I realize now that he did the right thing.

Eventually, I realized my ndad was being utterly stupid. Because unfortunately for him, he isolated me so much that I hated it so I started hanging out with my older brother and sister a lot. So all the brainwashing he did on me about my siblings flew out the window. And I realized eventually that they were awesome people who just... had a horrible stepdad.

I was to be a good girl. And so I was, because I didn't know any better. And I felt that it was the least I could do. They were giving me clothes and feeding me and giving me things. As long as I behaved. And so I did. I was capable, I read books and I didn't make much friends because I used to think I only got along with adults (turns out there was a twisted reason why I thought like that. If only they gave out medals for being most repressed lol.) My Ndad did it. He finally had full control of me. It's kind of sinister actually. He's hit me a few times in the past. But not right now. He controlled my schooling and decided where I should go. My dad would always call me "the perfect girl". It always made me gag when I heard that. I REALLY wish I had a time machine so I can tell my past self to... just have fun and be yourself.

Predictably, I developed anxiety&depression and attempted many times. My father found out one time and took me to see a psychiatrist friend of his. Who was the absolute worst person to talk to. I had a feeling he broke confidentiality and talked to my dad about everything. He brought me to a psychiatrist he could control and confide in (because my psych was also my dad's client at the law firm). I started treatment. It didnt work. In fact, I think it made my parents happier. Because they found out how fragile I was and that I really, really needed them. Nothing changed and now they still treat me like I'm five.

Now I see that my brother and sister were doing it right. They never acquiesced to my father's pressures. They were out there doing their own thing. They weren't cowards like me. They've got a strong sense of self and have their own lives. And they're still nice to my father.

Now comes the problem. I have realized that my Nparents may have... had a negative impact on me ONLY RECENTLY. I am at a loss. I REALLY thought I was okay. Turns out, having emotionally immature parents predisposed me to abandon my sense of self & mold myself into this... ROBOT with a manufactured personality to fit my parents' ideal so that I could finally gain even a SHRIVEL of their validation for existing.

I just realized why I'm so angry, depressed, guilty and unhappy all the time. I cried so much over this the other day. I feel a little lighter. But mostly I feel like everything I've been doing is fake and performative. I'm at a loss now. I know what my problem is. And I don't know how to fix it. I don't know who I am outside of this fake facade.

Now, I stay up at night mourning and grieving for a childhood that could have been spent discovering myself.

And now Im in gradschool. In a school I absolutely hate. I didnt know I could build a path of my own and now Im regretting everything. And I dont know what Im doing anymore. Im not studying Im not reading. I dont sleep. Ive lost a lot of weight. Ive started stress smoking. The ideations are stronger.

And I'm also worried because I'm 22 years old. A lot of recovery stories I read started at a later stage in life. Am I too early? Am I just too sensitive? Should I suck it ip like usual and wait this out? Or Should I do something about my Nparents? Or is it too late? How far in am I? Can I still get out? I don't even have a sense of self I can rely on. I don't know who I am beyond what my parents see in me. I can't even be completely myself around my friends. I am utterly lost.

I just... I feel so LOST and I dont know what to do. I'm having ideations again. I have no one to talk to (especially not my family). I feel so cornered. I want to ask for help but I don't know who I can ask it from. Writing it all out like in my old journals helps though. A little. Currently, Im trying to find more self help books about getting through this. Im trying to control my strong urge to get out of here.

It's a long post. I'm sorry. I get so wordy when I get into it. Anyway if you've reached this far, thank you for your patience and kindness. Thank you for listening. Sometimes, that's all I need. Someone to just be the listener for once.

TLDR; Just found out my parents might be Nparents after reading a book about emotionally immature parents and sifting thru my old journals. Now Im 22, worldviews completely shattered by realizations, in the middle of gradschool and completely lost. I dont know what to do. I dont know where to go from here.

I think its time to update this thing with everything that has been going on. A lot of beautiful things have happened the past 6 months, but when i look back, its a supercut of mental breakdowns and self harm. Surprisingly, i havent seriously thought about killing myself, but I am definitely putting a strain on my mental health, and i dont think i saw the signs until i was 4-5 months deep. until i was at the hospital. until i was crying in my work bathroom every day for 5 days. and even then, i still tried to keep telling myself if i give up, i am mentally weak. i still tell myself that know, as i try to get myself out of this situation. so lets explain the situation. I will try my best to go back to may and bring you up to speed.

I started working at this job... lets call it, the hellpit. I started in February, and they agreed to give me time off in april to go to japan. I was pretty happy about that, but i remember about a month and a half in, i seriously considered quitting, and that seemed early. I was annoyed at the lack of organization with the products we were selling, and the extra stress it put on the front of house employees. The job ITSELF wasnt so bad, it was simple tasks that were sometimes fun. But the customers were the worst. This is a private club, so we see the exact same people every single day, and i work in a half grab&go half diner. And we get treated like we are nothing. most of the time, we dont even get a “hi” or “thank you”, but we are required to smile and be polite, tell the customers to have a nice day. One girl got fired because she didnt smile enough and was kind of a quiet person. oops. But then i got my best friend hired, and i started enjoying my days a bit more. Japan gave me some perspective on life and i was running off that energy for about a month. I was also moving at the end of may so that took most of my focus. I was then asked to work in the poolside snack bar/ actual bar. I was excited, it sounded like a fun, fast-paced environment. I feel dissapointed writing that because I was so wrong. It makes me feel sad.

I would be working closer to the actual manager. Now, there is drama going on with that. there was 2 managers, R and C. R had been there for 13 years, had close relationships with the people in my workplace. she was even sister-in-laws with someone there. And then C comes in, and sees that there is a lot wrong with how the cafe is running. she wasnt totally wrong, but she has a large personality and isnt afraid to shit talk people. she came in and tried to change everything, and I dont know exactly what happened behind the scenes but R left on a 3 month stress leave, came back for 3 weeks and quit. If that doesnt tell you something about what it’s like to work along C, ive got more.

So this poolside hellbox was usually run by some other managers in the club, but C insisted on running it herself, putting her employees in it, etc. it was going to be the best year the poolside hellbox has ever seen. it was small, but it needed at least 3 people to run properly. Sure, it could be slow on cold days, but on hot days, it was a nightmare if there was only 2 people. Because we had to do everything; open, stock all the food, take orders, make orders, and pass them off, and close. it was truly exhausting and our days were always 9-10 hours, no breaks. She also stopped putting 3 people, brought it down to 2, usually 1. it was incredibly stressful. I tried to talk to her about my concerns, and she completely agreed. so i thought things would change. they did not. after some time, i injured my rotator cuff, and that lasted about a week until my entire back seized up and i had to go to the doctor. i was physically burnt out. and she had to work one of my shifts because i was medically ordered to take a break from work. writing this is making my back hurt.... funny how that works. anyways, i came back and she told me about how HARD of a day she had when she had to be in there for 6 hours. I thought to myself, good, she will finally understand. She never did. put me back in it, working 6 days a week, no tips, no breaks, 9 hours. there was a day where the air quality was so bad that my coworker with asthma expressed how ill the smoke makes him feel and that he cant breath, and she made sure he felt guilty for not telling her before hand. and then when we werent even making money that day, she blamed the people upstairs for not making the call to close it. i cant believe it.

the PSH finally closed for the year, but she wanted one more day to make a bunch of money. So there is another key player here. J. J has the title of supervisor but doesnt always act like it. C expresses how she feels about J often, and shes the only one who has the power to do something about it but does she? No.

So on this day, C is not at the Bad place, so in any other situation, J would be in charge. But C insisted that I text her and listen to what SHE said. and she said she wanted to open the PSH 2 hours early. J said it was too busy and we needed coverage. I listened to J. The fact that we didnt open 2 hours earlier really upset C. she was so mad at J for making that call, and i was upset that i was put in a position where i had no idea who to listen to.

So that was the day i decided i couldnt be there next summer. I needed to leave before the PSH opened again.

And since then, there has been a lot of hostility towards me. I remember C telling me that people might not like me because she likes me, and people dont like her. that should have been my first red flag to get the fuck out. I honestly thought she was a woman of her word, and that sticking with her was the right decision. she made me all these empty promises, like i’ll be getting a raise in September, or that she has big plans for me and my career there, or even that we were getting a company-paid night to reward us for all our hard work. and what has unfolded? nothing.

since then, it has been a series of bullshit. she comes down, yells at everyone and everything thats wrong, comments on how terrible the communication is, and how this doesnt look right, and how stupid everything is and how no one knows how to do their job, “except for you, this isnt directed towards you.” I have a feeling it may not be IN THAT MOMENT, but im sure it has been directed at me at some point. Shes manipulative, and takes advantage of people for her own personal gain, and completely lacks empathy. If it doesnt affect her, why does she care. If someone cant help her, why does she need them. that is her mentality, and she is a psycho. she wants complete control, but does nothing to change anything. She wants people to do certain things, but never tells them. She is by far, the worst manager i have ever had. not to mention she puts out the schedule thursday night-friday for the upcoming monday. so, yes, 3 days in advance. I feel betrayed, i feel disspointed, i feel burnt out.

She also made a sarcastic remark about how i could “never disappoint her”, which was the last straw for me. That was the day i decided i need to get out of there.

So, thats whats been going on at work, but behind the scenes, i have been unraveling. My manager has qualities that remind me of my mother, and not in a positive way. it’s very triggering in a way, and when i feel like i have disappointed her, i have the same feeling i would get when my mother would be disappointed in me. when she is completely unsympathetic to me being burnt out, i remember all the times my mom told me to stop feeling sorry for myself when i would cry. so i deal with daily triggers that i have a hard time shaking. there are also some things that go on in that club that really disturb my core values. I am a caring, inclusive person and these people treat us like dirt. I think most people are used to it, i even feel like im less sensitive to it as time goes by.

But i have been having mental breakdowns at least once a week. they were worse back in june or july, i remember completely trashing my room, throwing my books around and slamming my book case on the ground, and the colapsing and hyperventalating on the ground until my roommate found me. I remember scratching myself until i bled. I remember running to a park and crying in a field. I remember crying on the bathroom floor naked. I remember not being able to get out of bed. i remember punching a wall so hard i almost broke my fingers. this all happened withing 3 months. and after the big explosions came depression and giving up. I cry in the work bathroom often, i dont care about being on time, i dont care about my job, i dont care about my health or being in pain. i am in a constant fog, im exhausted and angry and i have a beautiful partner who loves me so much and i cant feel any of it, because i think i shut down everything so i can make it through the day. I’ve gained weight, i hate my body again, and i feel stuck. i feel ugly, i feel useless, i feel trapped. i need help. i need help getting out of this. i am so exhausted mentally, i do nothing with my day because im too tired. i am so incredibly miserable, i get those depression headaches every single day. I have a surgery coming up that i am not willing to compromise. maybe ill take some extra days off then? look for a job? rest my mind and prepare to job hunt and grind for a job that i might not hate? maybe i should leave now, go work at starbucks, see if i can get the time. maybe i should find a part time job, but will my manager hate me for it? does she already hate me for it? i just want to survive. i just dont want to get to the point where suicide feels like the only option again. I am not there yet, but its on the horizon, and that’s why i am scared.
