Pairing: Roronoa Zoro x reader
Genre: tooth-rotting fluff, mutual pining,
Word Count: 5.3k+
A/N: I did promise you more Zoro so here it is! This one has been sitting in my drafts for a while and I didn't really feel like posting it but something told me to do it now. Merry belated Christmas everyone and happy holidays! Hope you like it :)
ps: Thank you to @jiyaxedits for these really pretty dividers! They put me out of my misery a little 🫶
Tumblr media
Zoro wasn't big on celebrations. Birthdays or holidays didn't really exist in his vocabulary for the sole reason that he was happy to drink on any occasion. He didn't need a date in the calendar to tell him when to open a bottle of alcohol.
That was until you joined the straw hats.
You were the total opposite of his detached nature to almost everything that required an extra emotional effort. Even with that, it wasn't long until you piqued his curiosity.
Observing you, he came to the conclusion that you were emotion in pure form. You showed your caring nature for people in any way you could. Whether it was by helping out one of your fellow crew mates with something or just trying to ease their own load, you were always there. He didn't think much of it until he felt self-conscious enough to get involved and help out like you did. He wouldn't admit it but you had an influence on him.
The more time you spent together the more he was drawn to you, seeing things in a different light. Before he knew it, all those random dates in the calendar held some kind of meaning to him because they held a special meaning to you.
Although, he still didn't fully understand why you got so excited whenever one of those dates would approach. You would spend days planning the activities for the day, often going out for your way.
You would go over a special menu with Sanji, making sure all meals of the day and the dessert were covered. Then you would take Nami shopping for decorations wherever you happened to be docked, picking things that encapsulated the occasion. Usopp would also pitch in with helping you put the decorations up and add a tad bit more cheer to the atmosphere.
He noticed you and Luffy made a great team when it came to picking out small attentions for the crew. You both knew the crew better than anyone and it showed not just on those days, but the ordinary ones too.
In short, everyone became an extension of your excitement for the day. Well, everyone except Zoro.
You knew he wasn't used to the whole we are a family thing and you planned on changing that.
When you joined the crew he was really reserved. But after spending some time together, you managed to crack him open. You learned more about him, what he liked and what he disliked.
You tried pulling him out of his stoic bubble and it seemed to work because little by little, he started helping out too. It was small things like helping you fix the table before the food was served or picking the drinks out by preference of each straw hat. That's where you noticed that his love language was acts of service.
As small as they were, those acts were sincere and full of kindness. Whenever someone thanked him for his help, you would catch a glimpse of his face lighting up, the rarest smile pulling at the corner of his lips.
He cared and protected people in that way. It spoke volumes of his love he had for his crew and you admired that. Even if he didn't realise the impact he had, especially on you.
Tumblr media
The winter holidays were approaching fast, but it seemed like the cheer was absent on the Going Merry. The latest adventure left the crew exhausted and without a trace of enthusiasm. So much, that it was Christmas Eve and you didn't have a tree up, festive decorations hung around the ship or any food ready to munch on.
Out of all yearly celebrations, Christmas held a special place in your heart. It was a time to get together with your loved ones and celebrate the bond you have.
This would be your first Christmas with the crew and you have been looking forward to it for a while. They made you feel so appreciated and welcomed into their own little family and you wanted to return the appreciation.
So, bracing for your proposal to be rejected and a small hope that it would be accepted, you marched around the ship like an elf and pulled everyone out of their rooms and onto the deck.
Most of them didn't look too happy to be disturbed. Nami was in the middle of working on a map and she almost put her foot through your face for pulling her away from it. Sanji was putting some clean dishes away when you dragged him out, wet towel hastily tossed on his shoulder in the process. Luffy and Usopp were already on deck messing around. They seemed to be the only ones a little ecstatic for what you wanted to tell them.
But before you could start your speech, you noticed a certain straw hat was still missing.
Zoro was the hardest one to find, especially when he didn't want to be found. You searched his room, both the upper and lower decks, including the storage room filled with alcohol barrels and bottles. There was no sign of his presence anywhere on the ship.
You were ready to give up until you remembered there was one place you didn't search in, the crow's nest. And that's exactly where you found him, napping the day away.
Too engrossed in rushing to get everyone on deck, you were about to shake his shoulder. But as your eyes registered the sight in front of you, you halted all movement.
You saw him napping before, but none of those times did he look so deep in restful sleep like he did now.
He laid on his back, one of his hands propping up his head like a pillow, His legs were placed against the wooden mast. His body was angled in a way that the mast cast a shadow big enough to shelter his eyes from the early afternoon sun. His chest rose up slowly in sync with his soft snores, mouth slightly open. The light made his green hair look so soft that it took everything in you not to rake your hands through it.
There was something about him that put you at peace. Maybe it was the way his earrings jingled against each other and you knew he was nearby. Or the way his deep brown eyes changed to a warmer shade of chocolate while watching the sunset with you. You fell for those eyes of his a while ago and you didn't want to stop the bottomless drop at all.
Everything about him was peace to you. Even during battle, when he sliced through enemies and his blades were drenched in dirt. Or when he teased his crew members about something, with anything but good intentions in his head. Despite his hellish reputation, to you it felt like the heavens sent him down to earth. To fight and protect what he believed in with his all, laying down his own heart on the blade of his swords.
Your thoughts were cut short as the man before you stirred awake.
He sensed your presence for a while and contemplated whether he should make you aware that he knew you were staring at him. He wondered what you were sighing so softly at and couldn't hold in his curiosity anymore.
He opened his eyes to find you sitting down next to him. Your eyes locked with his and you just gazed at each other for a while. Adjusting the hand behind his head, he tilted it to get a better look at you.
You had that smile on your face, the one that grew on him the past months you've spent together. One look at it and it made every single one of his worries disappear into thin air.
That's the impact your whole presence had on him. Besides pure emotion you were also tranquility and harmony, while he was chaos and destruction. You neutralised his worst fears when he needed it the most with just that one smile and he couldn't get enough of it.
Your eyes suddenly went wide with realisation. You were supposed to get back to the other straw hats with him in tow a while ago. Wrapping your hand around his free one you tugged him up with you.
"Whoa, slow down. What's the rush?"
"You. Me. Downstairs. Now. Will explain in a bit."
He let you pull him downstairs on the deck where everyone else waited expectantly.
"Sleeping beauty decided to finally join us," joked Sanji.
"Is that a compliment, sandwich maker?"
"We thought you ditched us for a second," added Usopp, wiggling his eyebrows in a suggestive way.
You and Zoro were both confused. But then it hit you that something warm surrounded your palm. You looked down to see his hand securely intertwined with yours. Your hand was definitely on his forearm when you left the crow's nest. He probably caught your hand in the rush of pulling him down the stairs to avoid breaking his neck.
His eyes followed your widened ones to see your hands together.
He held your hand before, when he would hand you a plate with food or to help you down from the ship onto land. But not once did he hold it fully like this. His palm was entirely enclosed around yours. Your hand looked so small in his. Like it fit just right with his larger one.
You let go first and he hesitated a little. He wanted to hold it a bit longer. To study all the ridges on your knuckles as his fingers would thread between yours. To just hold them.
But he was conscious of the four pairs of eyes darting between the two of you and he let go of your hand, going back to his serious self beside you.
Shaking the awkwardness away, you turned back to the crew, remembering the task at hand.
"So, I gathered you all here today because it's Christmas Eve!" you said, waving your hands around enthusiastically, though your joy wasn't that well received on the other end.
"Okay and?" asked Nami, rather devoid of the holiday spirit.
"What do you mean okay and?! It's Christmas Eve! We don't have a tree up, decorations or any food to properly celebrate."
"I don't get why we need to celebrate a white bearded old man breaking into people's houses every year," deadpanned Nami.
"Yeah, I kinda have to agree with her on that," said Zoro, scratching the back of his neck.
"It's not just about Santa. We also celebrate the appreciation and love we share together as a crew," you stated. You took to walking around the deck, as their eyes followed you trying to make sense of your behaviour.
"Christmas is about making new memories by spending time together. It's putting up decorations and dressing up silly. We could set up our Christmas tree here," you pointed to the tall mast in the middle. "String a few sets of lights up from the jolly roger all the way down the veils to the decks, like a multi-coloured umbrella," you said excitedly, turning back around to them.
"Christmas is also a time to reflect back on the past year and talk about our best moments over a hearty dinner. It's a moment where we all get to be honest with each other. To share the hope, the joy and the love we hold for each other," you concluded.
You looked at them with hopeful eyes, earnestly wishing they will understand why you were so hellbent on doing something for the day.
But all you got in response to your speech was unsure neck rubs and a sense that you were the only one who wanted to celebrate today.
You felt like your excitement was maybe a little too much this time. Maybe they really just wanted a peaceful night in, doing whatever they had planned by themselves.
None of them were saying anything and it only made your uncertainty grow inside.
Maybe forgetting any of this even happened was better than making them feel like they should be doing something they weren't comfortable with.
Defeated, you took a step back and decided to retaliate.
"Actually, we don't need to do anything extra today. We can just chill out and all," you laughed nervously. "Sorry for bringing you guys out here for nothing."
You mumbled the last part and turned on your heels to make your way back to your room. Maybe not saying anything would have been better than whatever that was.
Tumblr media
The crew remained on deck after you left. If anyone felt defeated it certainly wasn't you, but them. Especially the green-haired swordsman.
His mind was stuck on you. On the way your eyes twinkled with joy the more you gestured around you how you pictured everything. On the smile that never left your lips as you spoke of what the holiday means to you. And the fact that you wanted to spend this with them, your current family.
For him, the concept of family was a hard one to grasp. He didn't think he would ever feel as welcomed as he felt with the family he had back at the dojo. With Kuina.
He thought he would never be able to find a place he belonged. Until he came across the straw hats. They annoyed him, pestered him, drove him crazy most of the time. But they cared. They fully supported his dream to become the greatest swordsman in the world, without doubting his ambition or his skills in the slightest. And that meant a lot to him.
They grew on him and they felt like family. That included you too. It was you who showed him how to give back to the people that support you relentlessly. It was you who taught him that opening up to people wasn't selfish. That he should be open to not just giving but receiving too. The straw hats had a lot of love for him and they would stop at nothing to show it.
That's what you did a few moments ago. You put yourself out there, doing everything to convince them that celebrating shouldn't be a chore. That you wanted to celebrate your new found family.
He felt his heart break when he watched you back away like that. He knew you were beating yourself up for it, for thinking you were too much. But that wasn't true. He wanted to tell you that he wanted to celebrate with you. But it took him a while to register everything you said and that was one of the things he was working on.
By the looks on their faces, everyone was questioning themselves now. Searching for some kind of meaning that Christmas could have for them. Somewhere, deep down inside their hearts, they wanted to celebrate this too, just as much as you did.
Something seemed to click in their heads after a while, their eyes connecting in a knowing look. You could consider them convinced because they took the initiative themselves. It just took a while for your words to process.
"You know what, she's right," started Sanji. "I haven't cooked a hearty Christmas meal for ages. I could do with a roast, some eggnog and a cake."
"I can clean up around here a little. Get the table out here and some chairs," chimed Usopp.
"We could go into town and see what decorations we can find," added Luffy, linking his arm with Nami's in excitement.
"All we need is someone to go and get a Christmas tree," said Nami.
All eyes moved to the green-haired man leaning on the stair railing. He was the only one who hasn't pitched in with anything yet and they all looked at him expectantly.
He, on the other hand, did not seem to get the idea, looking back at everyone slightly confused.
"What?"
"You really are an idiot," face palmed Nami.
"Hey! Why are you calling me an idiot?"
"She was suggesting you would go and get a tree that we could put up over here," said Usopp, motioning to the mast. He realised that it was the spot you said you wanted it to be in.
"Why me?"
"You're forgetting you're the more muscular one out of all of us," uttered Nami, pinching his bicep. She thought that if she spoke to his ego he would realise what he needed to do sooner. "You don't expect me to carry it back to the ship now do you?"
"Fair point."
Finally, with tasks assigned and a plan for battle in place the straw hats took to their duties. They decided Christmas would happen this year, though it would take some work. And possibly a miracle.
Tumblr media
It's been a while since you retreated back to your room. You stared at the Christmas plan you had written down on several sheets of paper on your nightstand, tracing the colour coded activities as you sighed. Maybe next year.
A knock on your door pulled you from zoning out. The light from outside dimmed down and the sun was just about to set, telling you it's been hours since your Christmas show on deck.
You walked to the door, wondering who it could be. It was probably Luffy, coming to check on you. But you were surprised to open it and find a rather distressed Nami. She had a weird smile on her face that was unlike her. What was even weirder was the silver tinsel hanging around her neck and the red and white santa hat on her head.
"We need some help out on the deck," she smiled wider, holding out a bag filled with different colored tinsel to you.
Your frown was instantly replaced by a smile matching hers as you took the bag from her hand.
"What made you change your mind?"
"You did," she said, pulling you into a hug that you returned. "We were too deep inside of our heads to see the bigger picture. We gave it some thought and realised you were right, so we got down to business."
You separated and walked down the halls. The walls inside the ship were decorated with lights all the way to the doors leading on deck. Nami's smile only got brighter the closer you got to the kitchen because you opened the doors and got hit with the most Christmas-like smell: Sanji's special roast. He just pulled it out of the oven, steam rising in the air spreading a divine aroma. But that wasn't the only thing cooking.
The oven was still working, baking a few batches of cookies in all kinds of shapes. A warm scent of cinnamon embraced you, followed by zesty citrus touches.
"It smelles like heaven in here, Sanji!"
"I'm glad angel," he smiled at you warmly.
Nami beckoned you outside. Luffy and Usopp were up in the crow's nest, struggling to untangle what looked like five rows of lights to hang from the jolly roger down to the veils. Just like you told them you wanted them.
You quickly climbed up to them with Nami in tow to help them before they could get hurt.
"Guys, you didn't have to do all this."
"Of course we did!" jumped Luffy. "You do so much for us and it was about time we paid you back."
"Well, at least let me help with the rest."
"Please do!" cried Usopp. He was tangled in one of the light sets from top to bottom.
"We could use you as a Christmas tree instead," joked Nami. "We just have to plug you in."
Everyone laughed at that. This was the atmosphere you desperately wanted, with the people you loved the most. It was where you belonged.
The only one you haven't seen around was Zoro. No one mentioned his whereabouts. All you heard was Nami complain that he's been gone for hours and that he ahd one of the easiest tasks to do. Maybe Christmas was a little too celebratory for him.
You just finished hanging up the last set of lights from the crow's nest when you heard grunts and enraged thudding of boots on the main deck. You made your way down only to be met with a sight for the history books.
There he was, hidden by a sturdy tree that was a shade of green darker than his hair. He carried it on his shoulders like it weighed nothing. But then again, he was Zoro. It must be something normal for him.
Everyone stopped what they were doing to stare at him. The look on his face told you he was a bit annoyed. Well, by the way his jaw ticked, probably very annoyed at the fact that no one rushed to help him with the huge wood angled on his back.
Luffy and Usopp got the idea and rushed to take it off his shoulders. They lifted it up on its trunk and that's when you all noticed the tree was actually massive.
Zoro rolled his shoulders to get rid of the ache in them and proceeded to dust his clothes off the tree's fallen pine needles that were scattered across his body.
"We thought you got lost," said Nami.
"Well, I did get lost," he deadpanned.
A lot of pine needles got stuck in his hair. He shook his head around to get rid of them but there were still some sticking out between his green strands. He raked his hand through them but he still couldn't get them out. He huffed frustrated in defeat and you decided to put him out of his misery.
Walking in front of him, you got on your tip toes, reaching out with your hand to whip the rest of the needles out. He froze in place, hands mid-way to his scalp to do it himself. He let them back down to his sides and watched as you took them out of his hair one by one and threw them away on the ground.
You had your bottom lip between your teeth, focused on getting the little fuckers out. He bent his knees so it would be easier for you to work on finding them without having to stay on your tip toes for too long. Once you were done and your heels were flat on the ground, you clapped your hands to get rid of any leftover pine needles. When your eyes lifted back up you realised just how close you were standing as you were eye to eye with him. You sucked in a breath as his eyes studied your face.
He was happy to see that you had a smile on your face this time, which was a hundred times better than that frown you had when you went to your room a few hours ago. In return for that bright smile of yours you always gave him, he gave you one of his own.
This smile was new, more rare than the smile he usually wore around you. You could literally see his pearly teeth. The muscles in his cheeks pulled the edge of his lips to curve up and his eyes crinkled into crescents. It was like a half smile, half smirk kind of smile. And it drove you absolutely crazy.
Who was he and what did he do with Roronoa Zoro?
"Uh, Zoro? Why does the tree have pine cones on it?" asked a confused Usopp.
His smile fell, eyes narrowing on the straw hat behind you.
"Is that not how it's supposed to be?"
"Where did you get it from?" asked Nami. "It's been hours since you went out."
"The woods," he said proudly, hands on his hips.
Everyone burst out laughing at his words, including you. This was too good to be true.
By the looks of it, he used his swords to chop it down. The few tears in his shirt told you the tree fought him a little for cutting it down.
"What are you all laughing for now?"
"There were trees for sale, already cut up in town," wheezed Nami through her giggles.
"I knew that," he said, hands coming to sit around his chest. You narrowed your eyes at him this time and he scoffed, averting his eyes from you.
"Fine! I didn't. I just wanted to get you the real thing."
"That is the real thing too," said Luffy.
"You know what, next time you can all take goldi-locks over there tree shopping. I doubt he'll do a better job at it."
"I heard you, peahead. And I will take you up on the challenge," shouted Sanji from the kitchen.
Tumblr media
Zoro helped you to fix the table and lay down the new silver cloth Luffy and Nami bought. It was so long, but so nicely decorated with white snowflakes falling off the edges and different winter patterns drawn along it. You both lifted it up and spread it across the table, smoothing out the ridges from the middle to the edges. One of the longer corners got caught under the leg of the wooden table and you struggled to pull it out.
Zoro rushed over to you. He dove under the table and saw the material was caught in a piece of wood that was sticking out. He unwrapped it and moved to hand it to you just as your hands reached out for it. Your fingers touched again for the second time today and it caught you both in a daze. He gazed at you and you stared at him, feeling like you were transported to a different world.
He leaned in closer to you and you did too. The way his eyes focused on your lips told you that he wanted to seal yours with his. Your lips almost touched, if it wasn't for the unwanted interruption.
"Is the table done, lovebirds?"
You were snapped out of zoning out into each other's eyes. You both looked to your right to see the rest of the straw hats looking at you. You let go of each others hands and went back to getting the table ready.
Zoro brought over cutlery and plates from the kitchen and you arranged them around the table. He also got some glasses and drinks, placing them by preference to everyone's assigned seats.
Finally, Sanji brought the food over and everyone dove in before the steam evaporated completely from the roast. A tray with six eggnog glasses was then served and you all clinked your glasses together, toasting to the crew. You looked around at everyone sat around the table and it finally felt like the holidays.
Zoro was sat next to you nursing a glass of red wine. He couldn't tell if it was the alcohol, the festive cheer or you that had a strange sense of peace wash over him. Like he did not have a worry in the world.
He looked at you from time to time absolutely enthralled by the way your laugh bounced in his ears. You were laughing at one of Usopp's stories that was most likely glazed with little reality and over the top sarcasm. The origins of the story didn't matter, because you seemed to love it by the way the corners of your mouth curled in a knowing smirk. Your eyes crinkled in delight every time he would reach a point in the tale that was too funny not to laugh at and you would let that laugh out and he would laugh with you. It was slowly becoming his favorite sound.
In the midst of it all he found himself smiling at you and the crew that was now his home. Maybe celebrating things wasn't that bad. Especially if they were things that mattered to him.
Tumblr media
After dinner, the crew dispersed to each their own. You wandered to the tree and sat in front of it, staring at it in awe. Multi-coloured baubles decorated it so joyfully, together with random kitschy ones. The tinsel waved around every corner, acting like an twinkling extension of the tree itself. More lights were wrapped around it, carefully placed around the pine cones. You chuckled remembering how badly Nami wanted to take them all off and you argued with her to just leave it be. Despite looking as wild as you could get it, it was the perfect Christmas tree.
Zoro was looking for you and found you in front of the tree. You looked so at peace as the lights twinkled, just like your eyes did as you looked at it. He thought that maybe having pine needles even in his boxers was worth it to see you smile that bright at the fully decorated tree.
"I hope it's to your liking," he said, walking beside you.
"It is," you smiled at him. "I wouldn't have it any other way."
"I've got one more thing for you."
You eyebrows raised in curiosity as you wondered what it could be. You already opened gifts at the dinner table so it couldn't be that.
"Close your eyes," he instructed.
You did as he told you and waited. He told you to open them and you saw him looking up, smirking at something. You followed his eyes to see a small twig with green leaves and red berries toed to a tree branch above you with a piece of ribbon. You instantly recognised it to be mistletoe.
"Did you just tie that up there?" you chuckled.
"Well, that diminishes the surprise effect."
You wondered if he knew what the plant's meaning was, especially on Christmas. Or if he just got it because it looked pretty in the woods. That was a possibility that kept your heartbeat from rising dangerously.
The confusion on your face told him you weren't sure of his intentions and he decided to make them somewhat clearer for you.
You were busy gauging the meaning of this by staring at the mistletoe. He took a step towards you closer to you, stopping as the tip of your boots touched. You lowered your eyes from the mistletoe only to find him almost nose to nose with you. He grabbed a hold of your hand with his free one, lacing your fingers together and pulled you even closer.
"So, does the man who doesn't celebrate holidays know anything about the mistletoe tradition?" you asked, getting a little closer to him.
"I might be an idiot sometimes, but I do know this much," he scoffed, signature smirk on his face.
"Hmm. You don't look so sure of that," you teased, playing with the hem of his shirt absentmindedly.
"How about I show you then?"
Your breath hitched in your throat as he dipped his head closer to yours. His eyes hungrily darted between yours and your lips waiting for your approval to finally kiss you.
"Want to do the honours?" you asked biting your lower lip in expectation.
"Gladly," he breathed out, closing the distance between you.
It turned out your palms weren't the only ones that fit together like pieces of a puzzle. Your lips did too, moving in sync with desire. Your free hand fisted his shirt to pull him closer as his free one came to sit at the back of your head pulling you impossibly closer. You felt him smile against your lips and you couldn't help but do it too, smilling against his.
You broke apart for air, foreheads pressed flush against each other. Your hands were still laced together, his thumb tracing the outline of your palm.
"This is the best Christmas ever," you breathed out.
He chuckled at that. His hand moved from the back of your head to cup your cheek and your hand came to rest on his wrist. You leaned into his touch, laying a kiss of appreciation on his palm. He smiled at you and that's where you knew that you wanted to spend all your holidays with him. Just like this.
It seemed like you spoke your mind out loud because he grinned widely at you. You buried your head in his chest in embarrasment as he laughed at your adorableness.
"I wouldn't want anyone else to spend them with either," said Zoro, laying your heart at ease.

But then—Luffy, smiling impossibly wide and white up on the platform, looking something far from man and too unbearably close to myth in his acceptance and resolution, saying, saying, as Zoro stared wildly upwards in vehement disbelief, fighting against crowd and enemy and the inevitability of time, casually; ‘my bad, I’m dying now.’ Do you remember Loguetown. Of course Zoro remembers Loguetown. Of course he does.
‘Yeah,’ Zoro says, instead.
Zoro and Sanji, the right and left-hand men of the future Pirate King.

Hi, I have a request if it’s ok.
Lately I’ve been feeling kinda useless and that no one cares about me. It’s been my birthday recently and my best friends forgot about it and only 2 other friends remembered and wrote me a message. I felt like I was forgotten and with one of them I didn’t even talked in a while. I feel alone and sad so if it’s ok could I ask for killer and sanji with an F s/o who goes trough this?
I'm so sorry you had to go through that, love! Happy Belated Birthday to you!! I send you all my love!💖💖💖 And of course, you can!! Let these boys shower you in love! Reader is female! (but it’s barely hinted)

“Massacre Soldier” Killer
Tumblr media
Yesterday was your birthday, a day you had wanted to spend with your lover, however, much to your annoyance, his red headed captain decided he just HAD to go help on some stupid raid. The rest of the day went by, since most of the crew didn’t know when your birthday was they didn’t wish you anything or celebrate it, not that you blamed them though.
The day went by quickly as you wanted for Killer to come back. However, by the time you fell asleep the man hadn’t returned yet. Tears wishing they could fall as you finally closed your eyes for the night.
When morning came, Killer still wasn’t in bed with you, worry overcame you, wondering if he was still on the raid or if something bad had happened. Getting up, you got dressed, not wanting the other males to see you in your pajamas. Heading out, you went to the mess hall, wanting to ask if they saw Killer.
“Surprise!”
Shocked by the sudden intrusion of voices, you stared blankly at the group of men (with a pouting Kid in the background). Killer holding a cake, that he had to of made, because it looked reasonably edible. Feeling tears prick your eyes, you tried to hold back the tears as you smiled at the man, happy he was able to surprise you.
“Sorry I wasn’t able to celebrate yesterday with you, but we can do it today if you want.”
Nodding at his words, you ran over and hugged the man, doing your best not to knock the cake out of his hands, Wire taking it from him so he could properly hug you. Arms wrapped around your frame tightly, as the man let out a whisper. “Happy Birthday, Y/N.”

Forgetting birthdays do not happen to this man, he has everyone’s birthdays (even stupid marimo’s) on a calendar! When you woke up and got ready for the day, you honestly expected it to be just a normal day. No one had ever taken the time to celebrate your birthday, so why start now?
Heading outside to see what the others were up to, you were shocked when Luffy ran up telling you a quick ‘Happy Birthday’ as he stuffed his face. Furrowing your brows in confusion, you had wondered how he knew. The rest of the day was the other crew members you came to know also wishing you well on your day.
You truly couldn’t figure out how they knew, you didn’t expect them to wish you well, not that they were bad people, you just didn’t see your birthday worth celebrating. Your suspicions on who told them were becoming clear, as you hadn’t seen your cook boyfriend lately, which surprised you as the man was usually figuratively on your hip.
Heading into the kitchen, you were shocked when the blond noticed you and refused to let you in. Giving excuses and telling you to hang out with the rest of the crew for a bit. It stung a bit, as you wanted to at least celebrate today with him. Almost giving up on spending the day with the man, you had heard Luffy yell out that it was time. Turning over to see what he meant, you had saw your favorite foods and a large cake at a table for everyone. Sanji standing on the side proudly.
“Sorry it took a while, I wanted to make all your favorite foods, but I also needed to bake the cake, and I got a bit carried away.” Laughing nervously, he expected you to get angry with him, but feeling your smaller arms wrap around his waist was not what he thought.
“Y/N-swannnnnnn~” Blood had gushed out of his nose as your body pressed against his in the hug. Staring at the man in shock, Luffy had interrupted your worried thoughts by asking if he could eat now, throwing a booger on the unconscious man as he got to work.

One Piece!
haven’t heard of it | absolutely never watching | might watch | currently watching | dropped | hated it | meh | a positive okay | liked it | liked it a lot! | loved it | a favorite
so although One Piece is one of my favorite series, my caveat for that is that I specifically adore the manga. I always found the anime frustrating in various ways and since ditching it for the original that opinion has only gotten stronger.
I think it's an interesting example of the medium because in some ways it does have some distinct advantages over the manga. The voice cast is incredibly talented and really suits the characters; the ability to use music really adds color to the series' sense of romantic adventure; the absence of word bubbles allows a greater appreciation of the drawings (there's a "but..." coming); and when the animation hits, it really hits.
However, the anime's slow pacing can make the series feel mind-numbingly boring even when important things are happening, and the animation is often terrible to look at. Eiichiro Oda's style is "cartoony" but it has an expressiveness that often falls flat in the Toei anime. These problems are a direct consequence of the production schedule, and although recent directors have been able to inject more vibrancy and fluidity, the pacing issues (by most accounts) still continue.
The anime also has the problem of The Tits. I think Oda is partly responsible for this but it's not quite so...egregious in the manga, nor is it coalescing with other forms of ugliness (such as jiggle physics or poor drawings). See this example:
Tumblr media
I dunno, I would love to see an equivalent to "Dragon Ball Z Kai" where all the stalling for time is stripped away. (There is actually a fan project called "One Pace" which does exactly this, though I don't know how well, and it can't resolve the other problems.) This is also why I'm kinda willing to give the live action series a fair shake; could be a more tolerable on-boarding experience in some ways.
don’t watch period | drop if not interested within 2-3 episodes | give it a go, could be your thing | 5 star recommendation
I generally do recommend the manga instead and then maybe watching some key moments if you feel like it - I read through 900+ chapters in three weeks and it would have taken me far longer to watch the same number of episodes (and that's roughly about how many there are when you exclude anime filler). So reading it earns you both a better told visual story, and a better time investment.
BUT One Piece is great! It's a fun adventure, it has a good central cast with interesting relationships and histories, an interesting world that unfolds in a really unique way. Its themes of freedom and repression and history and legacy continue to resonate with me. So like, if you absolutely cannot tolerate reading manga or just need something to put on in the background then I think the Funimation dub is pretty solid. Just use a filler guide.
fav characters: my all-time favorite character is Nico Robin (happy belated birthday!). Unfortunately she went underutilized for a long while, but I love her black humor and her passion for history. I also think she understands Luffy better than a lot of the other crew despite their very different attitudes, since both of their lives and familial relationships were destroyed by the government (which I think is also why folks like her relationships with Franky, Jinbei, and Nami, the other crew members whose loved ones were actively or indirectly killed by govt forces). Because her love of truth and capacity to learn and share history brings her into direct conflict with the World Government, I think she also has a brilliant connection to some of the core ideas and themes about freedom and government repression that I find most interesting. The way she develops and learns to rely on others, to love and be loved in kind, is incredibly compelling. Hell, her existence being inherently criminal is both a stark example of how law is used to "unmake" certain people in both our world and the OP world, and was such a good narrative engine that they just did the same plotline again with Luffy's brother in the following saga. Definitely a Character of Transgender Experience.
least fav characters: Garp is a Marine who wanted his grandchildren to grow up and join the Marines, and to achieve this goal he left them to live basically unsupervised with a bunch of bandits, only occasionally showing up to do some Child Abuse to "teach them how to be men." When one of those grandchildren is later condemned to execution for the crime of being born to the previous Pirate King, he does not intervene, resign, or in any way interfere with the proceedings beyond impotently getting in Luffy's way. One of my favorite moments is when he shows up in Luffy and Ace's childhood hometown and gets the shit kicked out of him by the bandit who raised them for being such a jackass.
He is an effective character but I hate him.
fav relationship: in terms of romantic pairings, the one that I have the most respect for is Franky/Robin just because of this moment.
Tumblr media
As far as more general relationships I love the bond between Luffy and Zoro.
Tumblr media
fav moment: there's so many but like, it's gotta be Usopp/Sogeking setting fire to the World Government flag on Luffy's command, effectively declaring war on the world on behalf of a comrade - right?
headcanons/theories: I'm not really deep in the theorycrafting phase right now, there's so goddamn much material to work with. I *am* of the opinion that Trans Crocodile is real. Maybe when I reread later this year (after Wano ends, if it ever does).
unpopular opinion: my most unpopular opinion is kind of a meta one: One Piece is not a "battle shonen" (dumb term anyway). it really grinds my gears when people treat it like it's DBZ where there were specific quantifications of physical power. Bounties aren't equivalent to power levels because bounties are meant to represent a socio-legal relationship between the World Government and pirate forces. Battles are important, but just as important as all the non-battle things going on; this is not quite as true in something like DBZ, Demon Slayer or Naruto where it's mostly just an escalating series of fights.
how’d you find it: I saw the 4Kids dub on TV when I was like 10 lmao

Luffy, 1.29pm: cool ill come help u
Nami, 1.29pm: You’re the one that needs help!
Nami, 1.33pm: You’re already on your way, aren’t you?
Nami, 1.36pm: At least bring your stuff with you so we don’t have to do it Monday morning!
Nami, 1.39pm: Why are you like this? I shudder to think there’s two more of you out in the world without supervision
Nami, 1.41pm: … I’ll open the blind, so you don’t fall on your face again
Luffy, 1.42pm: thanks nami!
-----------------------------------------
I’ve seen a couple of text chapters over the years in other fandoms and I wanted to try my hand at them, especially as they fit so well for this story. They’re super fun and a good way to unwind when I don’t feel like writing but still want to be productive.
…There’s probably going to be more of these. Maybe a huge group text, that’ll be carnage.
Thanks for reading.

Happy Belated Birthday! Hope it was fun! If you're looking for a request, how about Brook and Nami for "Birthday Card"?
Here you are, hun! :3 I hope you enjoy it!
A Straw Hat Birthday Party
“Dearly beloved, we are all gathered here today to commemorate a very special occasion,” Sanji announced dramatically as he stood at the head of the kitchen table, held tilted back and his hand over his heart in the epitome of a regal air. Nami jumped slightly as he slammed his hand down on the table and pointed at her with the other, hearts beating wildly in his eyes. “Nami-swan’s birthday~” Nami rolled her eyes nearly into the back of her head at the ridiculousness of it; her birthday was a month ago, in July, one month before they had reconvened in Sabaody Archipelago and set out to Fishman Island. They had surfaced this morning and were currently sailing onwards in search of another sort of business for Luffy to poke his nose into, and they had all been very confused when Sanji had suddenly summoned them for a premise other than lunch.
“Sanji, it’s been over a month since my birthday- and technically, almost all of us have had two birthdays since we were separated, so is it really fair to celebrate only mine?” she pointed out with a wave of her hand. Not that she was unappreciative of the sentiment- it was actually really nice that Sanji had committed her birthday to memory, though not entirely unexpected- but it didn’t sit well with her to leave everyone out. Sanji instantly deflated to sink into a chair, grumbling and lighting up a cigarette to sulk. “Look, all I’m saying is, maybe we should have like a joint birthday party for everyone!” she suggested. She didn’t want to ruin all his fun.
“Oooooooh! That sounds like so much fuuuuuuun!” Luffy cried and filled the air with the happy clacking of the soles of his flip-flops slapping together. “Let’s do it, Sanji! Please? Please?” Sanji took a long drag of his cigarette before cocking his head to the side, blowing the plume of smoke through his mouth and nose.
“Nnh, it doesn’t sound too terrible an idea. I could make a hell of a tiered cake with everyone’s favorites…” he began to mumble to himself as he unconsciously rolled up his sleeves and got up to begin rooting around his kitchen for various supplies. Luffy crowed ecstatically and flung his rubbery arms into the air before stretching out his head across the table to where Usopp and Franky were sitting together to begin yelling at them about party decorations. Chopper got up and ran across the table to Robin bleating about scrounging up small little presents for everybody, to which the woman smiled and responded calmly that she was sure they could find something. This led to a slew of construction paper, scissors, glue, and various other art articles from Usopp’s cache being slung across the table to create birthday cards, while Usopp, Franky, and Sanji worked around them on their respective duties. Luffy was attempting to be helpful but kept letting the balloons loose to fly around because he thought it was funny, and Zoro decided it wasn’t worth all the effort and was sleeping on the floor. It was absolute chaos, but somehow Nami had wrangled in the mania just a bit to provide a menial amount of order; she had divvied up the birthday card assignments between herself, Brook, and Chopper. Robin was using her Devil Fruit power to help out in various ways and was lounged back beside Chopper as he sat down on the table in front of her coloring with some crayons.
“Nami? What do you think of this? Yohohohoho!” Brook chortled beside her and held up his card for him to critique his handiwork. Nami instantly grimaced; she should have known better than to ask him to make a card for her. He had drawn an actually cute-looking pair of panties on the front with the simple phrase “It’s your birthday! Show me your panties!”
“Brook, come on, take this seriously!” she tutted and waggled her finger at him. “It may seem like everyone is taking this lightly, but look at how hard everyone is working for all our sakes!” she said with a gesture around the room. Sanji was slaving over a large bowl whisking frosting into oblivion while an automatic mixer churned his cake batter into creamy goodness; Usopp and Franky were kneeled on the floor painting a very elaborate and tasteful banner; and Luffy was actually getting serious enough to actually begin tying the balloons together into arrangements. Brook’s calcified face frowned and he looked down at the card, his bony eyebrows narrowed in concentration.
“I see… I apologize, Nami. I haven’t celebrated my birthday in fifty years. I suppose I forgot how much it meant to others.” Nami’s heart immediately twisted into contorted guilt. She hadn’t meant to upset him! Gosh, darn it, now she had to cheer him up, dammit. The skeleton man was obviously blue. Nami smiled sweetly and reached up to pat his bushy afro.
“Don’t sweat it, okay? I didn’t mean to be harsh! Look, all I meant was that I would rather you pour your heart and soul into it! You don’t need my approval. Do your best!” she said with a nervous edge to her smile. Would it work? God, she couldn’t upset anybody on their joint birthday celebration! Luckily enough, Brook instantly brightened and bent over his card, pencil flying with renewed gusto. Nami breathed a small sigh of relief and went back to working on her own birthday cards.
~~~~~~~~~~
Considering it was a spur-of-the-moment thing, their little joint birthday celebration was underway right as the sun began to sink towards the endless horizon. They had moved their party to the spacious dining room; the birthday banner was strung across the wall, splashed with brilliant color and bubbly font that simply screamed celebratory cheer. Balloons were placed all about, bouncing along the floor and bobbing along the ceiling, and tied in great bunches at each corner of the room. Sanji’s work of art, the tiered cake with sections catering to each crew member’s taste, was situated on the middle of the table which was draped in white tablecloth. Chopper eagerly went about delivering the cards to their respective recipients before clambering up into his seat between Robin and Nami, drooling as he held a fork and knife and eyed the beautiful cake.
“Carve it up, Sanji, I’m starving!” Luffy whined in a wheedling voice as he banged his fists on the table impatiently. Sanji shook his golden bangs from his face with a snort of derision and a glare that warned “don’t piss off the man with the massive cake knife.”
“Keep it up and you’ll get yours last!” he snapped. Luffy did not take kindly to that, melting into a puddle against the table, but obediently ceased all impatient grumbling while Sanji set to cutting up the cake and delivering pieces around. Nami and Robin got theirs first, of course, but she patiently waited for everyone to get theirs before trying it; oh, but it was so hard to wait, because it seemed simply delectable! It was a tangerine sponge cake with lemon-orange whipped frosting and flecks of strawberry to add some conflicting tang. Nami’s mouth began to water just staring at it, and she practically dove into it when Sanji announced that they could. The icing was simply divine, melting into tasty sugar on her tongue, and the cake was the perfect level of moist and had an incredible texture.
“Sanji! This cake is immaculate!” she cried with a mouthful of her second piece.
“Ah! Only the best for you, Nami-swaaaaaaaan~!” Sanji trilled while pirouetting on the table so fast that she could imagine him little beating pink hearts all over the place.
“Cards! Let’s read the cards now!” Chopper begged while holding his up over his head. They eagerly complied and began reading off the little messages in the cards; it was pretty obvious who wrote who’s. Choppers all had some iteration of “Happy birthday, you bastard!” but also featured adorable little renditions of the tiny reindeer with whoever the card’s recipient was; they were so charming and child-like that Nami’s heart melted just looking at the drawings. It was clear that he put his heart and soul into them. Of course, he grew very bashful with all the gratuitous remarks and tried to laugh it off, but the brilliant grin on his furry face was plenty evidence that he was overjoyed at his handiwork’s reception.
Comparably, Nami’s cards were a bit simpler and had an almost store-bought craftsmanship to them, decorated with floral patterns and containing simple yet heartfelt personalized notes to the recipient. Sanji of course was one of them and he pirouetted so hard that he activated his Diable Jambe, warbling like a deranged songbird about how it would be an artifact that he would treasure for all time. Zoro was smiling wryly because she had made a pretty cheeky comment about his less-than-healthy rate of alcohol consumption.
Finally, it was time to get to Brook’s cards. The outside was unassuming, scrawled with wave patterns, but when she opened it she was bewildered to find that it contained no message or inscription of any kind. She looked up to Luffy and Usopp’s confused expressions to find that theirs suffered an identical issue. Before any of them could inquire, Brook cleared his non-existent throat and stood up to his full towering height, violin in hand.
“I am afraid that I struggled quite a bit in what to put in your cards. Ultimately I realized that I have far too much to say, yohohohoho, so hear it is in song instead!” He flipped the violin about to tuck it beneath his chin before drawing the thin instrument across the taut strings, producing a melodic wave of sound. Nami leaned her cheek into her hand with a small smile; his voice really was amazingly pleasing to the ear, and it seemed that he really had taken her advice to heart. There was nothing that Brook put more heart and soul into than his music. He sang about Usopp first, chronicling his bravery and adventurous soul, moving the elated Usopp to tears (which really wasn’t that hard considering he cried over almost everything). He sang about Luffy next, commending his indomitable spirit and good-naturedness, and though he had no idea what the words were, the straw hat-wearing captain hopped up onto the table and began dancing around singing random notes. Usopp soon jumped up with him and they linked arms, stomping in a circle. The rest of the crew found themselves clapping along, although Sanji snapped at them that it was their funeral if they ruined his cake.
Finally, Brook arrived at his verse for Nami. It was a song of the wind and the sea and tangerines and the navigator’s strong will. Nami felt like he plucked the strings of her heart rather than those of the violin, because she was just so moved by it. She leaned back in her chair while giving Brook a serene, warm smile, and he tossed her a wink while he continued to sing his birthday card for the three of them.
See, Brook? It’s not hard at all- not when you love us as much as you do. Sometimes you just have to put in words a little differently, huh? She thought contentedly as she tapped her foot along to the raucous beat. Nami couldn’t have asked for a more thoughtful birthday card than that.
Aaand... here. [ffnet] [ao3]
Me notes: I’m living dangerously and haven’t actually looked up the possible lingering symptoms of lead poisoning up till a week ago. And yet, it’s disturbing how legit my guesses were, even past the chronic pain lmao??? Shit’s wild, yo.(Won’t come up, but among other things, it can fuck up your cognitive abilities, that is to say, make you stupid(er)... our genius Law’s IQ was probably so broken that it needed to be nerfed to hell, yet he’s still one of the smartest jackasses in the series. somehow, this info delights me… what a force of nature.) (I’m definitely winging the shit as to why those things happen tho, this is just a shitty fic project, I don’t need nor really want a PhD in neurosurgery and whatnot. … for now, at least. I’d be happy with a teacher’s degree. And something to prove that I’m by no stretch bad at translating stuff.)
26. Shenanigans
As soon as Kat reaches her destination, Nami poses a question immediately; “What was that about?” All she could see was that Law was both mad and… well, confused, while trying his darnest to be civil. Which in itself is a point of interest, just like the fact that her new friend here also seems kind of lost.
Kat sighs. “I’ve been too,” Honestly, how should she summarize this? Uh... “well... nice?”
“Too… nice.” On second thought… the navigator feels she shouldn’t be surprised that the Heart captain would find that unwelcome. He’s not exactly the buddy-buddy type, hell, probably even paranoid.
“Like... I felt kind of guilty for skipping all that practice and being a general nuisance,” among other things she cannot talk about... “... so I brought down some rice crackers and tea after breakfast and washed his dusty mug that must have been lying around for months for him,” she looks up, slowing down a bit to get her thoughts in order; “We had, like, a tea party. Which was still okay, I guess. After having managed to sit out the new training shit proper, probably looking like a maniac during it all… I definitely overdid it by buying a teddy at the fair for his suspiciously big bear themed collection.” It really seems excessive and random in hindsight. “Man, can you imagine I even considered to buy a gigantic one? I couldn’t bring myself to pay up the twelve grand, but… pfff.” she mumbles mostly to herself, putting on a faint smile over the mental image of chucking that monstrosity at him again, then places a hand on her cheek while contemplating the general idea over in vague confusion. She settled for the small one, but... sheesh. On the other hand, she likes being charitable, and it’s been too damn long since she had both the financial background and an excuse to buy a gift for someone apart from the obligatory job stuff. Thinking about this makes her want to give a little ‘thank you’ gift of sorts to both crews… except, well, she ain’t got jack as far as ideas are concerned. They already have everything they could need, too.
Nami rolls her eyes upon hearing that. “Geez… it’s like you’re wishing him a belated happy birthday and he’s complaining over the attention. Which… is not all that surprising, I guess,” she concludes then with a shrug. “He did the same when we threw him a party before arriving in the country,” His main complaint was that he had his private party with his crew a few days back… none can do for Luffy if he wants to party, however. “On the other hand… you do realize that you sound like an overly apologetic boyfriend, right?” Nami muses while returning her attention to her, finding sudden enjoyment over the image of Knight Kat and her grumpy liege.
“Well… he is a princess as far as I’m concerned,” Kat nods in agreement. “While I’m not sure his highness would agree, I can see where you’re coming from, though,” she adds, scratching the sideburns in embarrassment. “I’m… not really good at taking care of anyone or anything in general, no lie. The moons must have aligned, or something.”
“You must be underestimating yourself,” the other woman states, leading her towards the table with the still steaming drink on it. Sanji must have been here a mere minute ago. “People who have no sense of nurture would never be able to do your job, you know?”
“Work is different,” she protests, crossing her forearms in an X, and squints at the back of Nami’s head where some small creature seems to be very, very lost in the orange sea; “Because… I know I have to do that stuff, and I must pay attention at least some of the time, you know? If I didn’t, I’d get fired. When just home, or hanging out… I get way too comfortable, and next thing I notice after spacing out is that the day is already over. Flowers unwatered and still full of lice or whatever, dog unwalked and unpooped, cat unfed and has knocked everything off the table, and then there’s me, also hungry and dirty... Can’t just do all of that quick before going to bed, can you?” She sighs. “I’m happy I’ve gotten far enough to be able to take care of myself, you know.” Sometimes she still forgets to eat, or keeps going just one or two more days without the designated bath. It’s so… it’s beyond embarrassing. And infuriating. Occasionally… even humiliating.
She picks up her cup and stirs the beverage, then downs half of it immediately. A sugar chunk in her mouth and the barely comfortable temperature remind her that she probably should slow the fuck down. Oh well… if she already has half the cube, might as well lick it away.
“... I still think you are selling yourself short, but… can’t say I haven’t met the problem.” Getting started after Bellemere was… overwhelming. Although they helped out a lot since they were little, and there wasn’t a lot more extra work to do, neither her nor Nojiko had an idea where to start with the household, even though the villagers cleaned up the mess in the house that Hachi had left behind. The laundry seemed to be more when it was less, the cooking more challenging... even the tangerine grove felt bigger and more intimidating than before. Everything appeared to be more than what it was in reality. When she noticed some work waiting to be done, she handled it on autopilot, but there really was a lot of spacing out while doing stuff. From what she just said, Kat seems to be in a similar state of mind, albeit near permanently. “Either way, that already is something. You talk as if you were worse about it, so there’s nothing to be worried about. That forestside cottage won’t tend itself once you get there.”
Kat lets a smile creep on her face, being reminded of her silly life goals. Nami was listening in on her and Robin’s conversation, huh? “I guess… but I’m still eons away from even attempting that.” Finishing the sentence, she also finishes her coffee and puts the cup down. Now, let’s address that minor annoyance that’s been bugging her quite literally for a minute… “By the way, turn around a bit?”
“Turn…? Why should I?” the redhead asks, complying with the request regardless.
Kat reaches into her hair and picks out one tiny black dot after short looking around the neck area. “You had one of these really small spiders in your hair,” she says, lifting the little goober for her to see. The wind carries these all over the place.
“Eeeh,” Nami gets shivers turning back to her while holding her locks, zeroing in on the barely visible animal. “Oh, god, get it away….!”
A mischievous smile appears on Kat’s face; Nami knows her just enough to step back and eye her with suspicion.
“Away?”
“Don’t…”
“Don’t what?”
Another step back is followed by a step forward by Kat, and they start waltzing faster and faster, until Nami starts sprinting and runs into Sanji, who is bringing out drinks for her and probably Carrot, as Robin should be having her coffee now.
“Shield!!” she shouts, flinging him in between. The man keeps enough balance for the layered cocktails to barely sway; quite impressive. He’s also visibly pleased with the development.
“Oh, Nami, dear~ you are so passionate today. What brings you to me~?”
“An itsy bitsy spider,” says Kat, bringing it up to his nose, almost.
“Oh, a spi---” the smile freezes onto Sanji’s face upon turning towards her, then he emits a sound alike a deflating balloon before arching back all of a sudden over Nami in panic. The utensils in his hand can’t compete with the sudden movement, and are wobbling precariously, until the tray itself starts to tilt; noticing that, Kat snaps her hand towards said objects to stop them from falling, and the spider, having had enough of these shenanigans, uses the momentum to make an exit with a jump into the greenery.
The drinks, along with every layer, practically stop in time; Sanji looks over to them, still in shock.
“Sweet catch,” says a bubbly Carrot who has likely seen everything as she's sliding down the mast.
“... thanks…” Kat squeaks. Something about this feels… weird, though. “And, uh, sorry,” she adds, looking over to the cook. “Didn’t know you felt this strongly about creepy crawlies.” She almost ruined those drinks and potentially could have broken the glasses, too...
“I-it’s fine,” he croaks with the frozen smile still on his face, shaking a little both from the position and scare.
“That was mean, Kat,” Nami grumbles, pushing the man back onto his feet, checking the grass for the small stowaway. “Don’t bring bugs near me… or Sanji, -sorry, Sanji,- they are gross!”
“After this, I really won’t,” she mumbles, slowly setting the glasses back into position on the tray now that Sanji’s calming down and is not shaking things all over the place. The contents, however… need extra care? They are levitating by themselves, so she needs to move them along with the glass. What is she doing differently, here?
“Thank you,” the man mumbles with the last item returning to its place and having recollected himself.
“No need to, I was the one brewing trouble in the first place.” Being done with the extra task, she feels relieved. “The falling things save is an aspect that I’ll definitely miss, no lie,” she breathes then; the odd feeling from before has not left her. There’s a notion that she can pinpoint every last detail around the ship, to the last strand of hair… she can even feel the little tiptoes of that tiny arachnid under them; taking a look to the side, she can spot a dot exactly where she thinks it is, too. And two butterflies flapping around the garden, flies all over the place, and just in general a lot of all kinds of small creatures all over. Even the positions of people moving around on board, whom she can kind of identify by size, position, what they might be doing or the way they walk… as well as the different layers in the drinks, which appear to be the most detailed ‘feeling’ thing. There’s just a lot of stuff not belonging to places, and it’s a little overwhelming.
Her perception being off is apparently noticeable, as Nami picks up on it as well. “You alright?” Kat has a tendency to space out or look out of it, so she’s always a little worried that there’s something like a pulled neck muscle going on. Most of the time, though, she’s just daydreaming.
“No, I’m alright, it’s…” Suddenly, she feels enlightened. “Oh, I think I know what this is…”
“What would that something be?” Nami asks, blinking in confusion.
“I think I just activated this scanning stuff by accident,” she informs her, looking down at her hands. The trigger must have been reaching for the glasses, but… how does one turn it off?
“Scanning…?” the woman mumbles. This must be something Ope Ope related.
“Like… I just know where a lot of stuff is, all of a sudden…” Thinking about it, she knows specifically where living things are, and the overall shapes of objects. And… possibly the density of things, because, those drinks...
Sanji notes her sudden interest in said beverages. “Would the resident changeling fairy like a glass of her own?”
Oh god, he’s already back to cheesy descriptions level… ANYWAY.
“No, thanks, I don't drink... I do like looking at pretty cocktails, though.” Honestly, sometimes they smell really nice, so it's hard to resist.... like these. There’s some chocolate and raspberries in there… but all she has to think of is the bitter aftertaste and the temptation is no more.
“Actually,” she continues as Nami gets her cocktail to sip on and Carrot walks up to them, asking whether she can have the other one, to which Sanji informs the mink that it was meant to be hers anyway; “mind if I try something with one of these…?”
“Oh, are you going to do some cool tricks?” Carrot asks with excitement; “I’ve been wanting to see the stuff Bropper has been talking about, too!”
“Ah, right!! I wanted to show you some stuff, anyway!” she says while sucking up some of the radiating fuzz buzz up, too.
Sanji raises a brow and puts on half a sulk. It takes a second to let the notion of food being tampered with slide, but if it’s for the greater good and less frustrating body statuses… Indeed, the thought of everything in the universe being in its rightful place puts his head back in the clouds. “I’ll be on my way, my lovelies, call if you need anything~” he swoons while disappearing back in the kitchen in a whirlwind.
Nami also gets going direction library and waves goodbye while drinking, which gesture the remaining two return.
“So, so,” the mink starts again, lifting up the glass to Kat; “what do you want to do with this?”
“What I want to do with the drink specifically is probably not that interesting, but even if it’s a total failure, I’ll make it up to you right after,” she notes. She has about one shot at this, anyway.
“Tee-hee~ Show me watcha got,” the rabbit girl says with a smug face to challenge the cocktail’s opponent.
“As you wish,” Kat responds with a smile of the same smugness level; Carrot snorts at this.
“You legit sound and look like Bepo’s captain right now,” she giggles.
“Hey, hey, careful,” Kat half-laughs while trying to keep the glass upright; “I need this thing as it is right now.”
“Alright, even if you will suck at this, you’ve already redeemed yourself,” the mink states as they waddle with combined efforts towards the table to put the beverage on. “Purely on a basis of a spot-on impression that you ruined immediately after.” She wasn’t there for the first performance anyway. “Bonus points for not even trying, tho.”
“Well, Carrot, to catch the pray…” she looks around with shifty eyes as the glass clinks on the polished surface; “you need to become the prey.”
“Well, well, well, Kat… I literally am prey,” she nods, releasing the object at last. “Also… are you saying you are out on a hunt? Hmm?” The smug smile returns, and this time it’s accompanied by a knowing look and crossed arms.
The girl needs to consider this for a moment, and she also puts on a comically exaggerated thinking face. Is she trying to go for Law's jugular in any way or form? She's had worse company, but... "Not really. Or deliberately. Unless hunting for funny situations for either person counts as such." With that she also lets go of the poor liquid that still retains most of its original form.
Carrot nods wisely after a few seconds, eyes entranced in the cloudy horizon. “... that’s fair, can’t blame you for that.”
Kat needs to hold back a smile, then decides to put an end to this banter. “Okay, alright, I may have finished off my coffee in like three shots, but I’ll have to hurry regardless,” she waves her hands around. “Let’s see this bad boy,” she groans while dropping on a chair; Carrot follows her lead and watches intently.
Okay, so… she still has that feeling going, that’s good; she also tried to keep the drink stable while holding it, which seems to have been a success. Now, how to do the thing she has in mind… She touches the glass again, which seems to power up the sensation somewhat; even if it’s a placebo effect, being in contact seems to make things much easier. There is definitely a difference between the glass and its content... what she’s really interested in, however, are the individual layers, which also seem different… they feel different. Especially the lightest and heaviest ones.
What if she just tried, took the lowest, dark layer, and...
“... Kat, what part of reality are you breaking again?” asks Usopp in a vaguely wary manner while passing with his tool box, his eyes catching the liquid blob pass a rather opaque layer following her finger before settling on top. Carrot breathes a ‘cool’ as she watches on with her head on the table.
“... density or gravity, I guess.” If not both. Those are kinda correlated, aren't they...? Eh, fuck physics. She can break all the rules, anyway.
As the layer settles in, she takes a look at the one now below it; a motion of another finger lowers it to the middle, then she raises it up again through the static ones. After that, she puts the reddish, heavy goop back to its place, with the lightest layer over it. Releasing it all makes the whitish liquid phase through multiple other ones, stirring the entire cocktail up. Looks rather nifty, with all those vertical stripes in it. Last part notwithstanding... if souls or whatever feel just as different, and she can make them slide through another... after some refinement, this just might be the thing she needs.
Hope I am doing this right, I just recently found your blog and I love your writing. I am not sure if this counts as an emergency, but today is my birthday and my only two family members never really bothered to celebrate something like this, so it’s like every other day :‘) I would really appreciate if you could do some headcanons with a reader who isn’t used to celebrate his birthday, my comfort characters are Luffy, Sanji and Nami. But pls don’t stress yourself and have a great day
Thanks so much for your kind words!! 😭😭 Happy belated birthday by the way! I'm a September baby too! So feel free to stop by and we can celebrate together!❤️
Babes Below~!
Monkey D. Luffy
Tumblr media
Birthdays can be confusing for the brunet, he understands them and enjoys them, but never celebrated them. Growing up in the orphanage, it was rare for some kids to even know their birthday, let alone have any funds to celebrate them. Even when he spent time with Makino and Shanks, it was still never talked about, it just happened.
So it became a mission of his to celebrate his loved ones’ birthdays, and hey, even if they didn’t know their birthday, they could make one up together!
When he had heard you don’t normally celebrate your birthday, he was a bit annoyed, his stubbornness shown through and refused to accept anything other than yes as an answer.
He had told the crew about your birthday and how he wanted to throw a feast for you. Due to your own importance in the crew, they didn’t mind celebrating, Sanji making your favorite meals, while the girls and Chopper helped Luffy find a gift! That left Usopp, Franky and Brook to decorate, Zoro was going to help, but fell asleep soon after. By the time the night fell, you were thrown a large feast, with your loveable boy gifting you a bouquet of flowers and a promise to share his favorite meat with you!
Vinsmoke Sanji
Tumblr media
Birthdays are hard for the blond too, he didn’t have birthdays after his mother died, even living with Zeff and the others on the Baratie, it was nothing more than a head pat from the rough hearted man.
He never thought to ask if you celebrated your birthday, but as you two get to know one another better, you eventually open up about your feelings on your birth.
Sanji completely respects that you don’t want to celebrate your birthday, so he won’t make a big deal out of it. He will probably wait till everyone is asleep and surprises you with a birthday cake he made and a soft smile as he wishes you a happy birthday.
He knows it’s not anything special, but he still wants to show his love for you and how much you mean to him! Will happily give you kisses and hugs as you two eat his handmade cake together!
Cat Burglar Nami
Tumblr media
Nami can be a tricky ones. I think she celebrated her birthday as a kid with Bellemere, but after her death it became a reminder of her guilt. However, she still likes to see her friends happy and celebrate how much they mean to her!
Due to her love language being gift giving, she will buy you something practical that you need, she won’t even mention happy birthday if it’s true triggering for you also!
Will joke that you owe her interest for her time and effort finding you a perfect gift, also will charge you for spending the day with you! She’s only joking, but won’t say no if you try to pay her! Sadly, she won’t bake you a cake, at least not with Sanji in the kitchen, but she will give you some tangerines!
Tries to do simple, cute things with you, that also doesn’t draw attentions to others who might want to celebrate your birthday, unless you want her to, then your girl will go all out!
Stability - 1
Fanfiction: Stability Story Summary: It wasn’t because he was self-conscious or ashamed. No, it was because he was afraid. His greatest fear was being alone after all. Characters: Luffy, Zoro, Chopper, Nami, Ace, Sabo, Law Pairing: Eventual LawLu Rating: T Warnings: Swearing, AU/UA, canon-typical violence, angst A/N: Okay, so first off: This is an AU (Or UA) where Luffy is trans. (FTM) It’s fairly ‘different’ from my usual set up where there are a lot of changes in PoV’s. So, that being said, there will be some disphoria/mentions of it.
It’s something I’ve really wanted to write for awhile. It’s a self-indulgent fanfiction for me. (Yay, happy belated birthday to me!) And, also for Luffy’s birthday! (Because of course this needs to end happy) So, here’s my dual birthday present :D
.xxx. = Time/scene skip
.+++. = PoV change
Read on Ao3
Part 1 || Part 2 || Part 3
For one that slept as often as Luffy did, it wasn’t hard for Zoro to notice the few tendencies that Luffy had.
There was the fact that Luffy, without fail, would sleep on his stomach. The closest exception to this rule was when the captain was tightly holding a pillow, half on his stomach and half on his side.
And, thinking about it, usually when Luffy was laying down it was on his stomach.
There were other unusual tendencies that Luffy had.
That, for a guy who hardly had any respect for other people’s personal space, he seemed to be… well…
Zoro wouldn’t say that he was self-conscious but, Luffy never changed in front of anybody. His baths were even taken alone even though he was an anchor. (Granted, he always asked for somebody to be outside the door in case he did drown. Just asked them to knock on the door to check in on him every few minutes.)
Abnormalities aside, his captain was his captain. They all had their quirks.
.xxx.
Cocoyasi Island, really, was the first time that Luffy had any major medical treatment. Sure, he had a few bandages here and there, had to inhale some anti-venom, but nothing serious.
He could hear some arguing going on in the room next to his. Luffy was protesting, while the doctor of the village was only protesting back. Zoro couldn’t admit he could understand what was saying, but eventually it seemed that Luffy had been subdued by the doctor by the lack of response from Luffy. And the fact that the doctor left to grab Nami (who was waiting for her turn to be attended to due to what she had done to the tattoo on her shoulder) and bring her into the room.
Why? Well, eventually Zoro had learned just the reasoning when they had returned to the Going Merry.
Apparently Luffy had injured his ribs while fighting Arlong, and his bandages needed changing. Of course, the doctor didn’t trust Luffy’s capabilities to ensure the bandages were properly or consistently wrapped. (Neither would Zoro. Luffy was like him in that aspect.) And it seemed that Nami was in charge of that. (And his too.)
(Why Nami, well, probably because of Luffy’s protests and Nami was the closest person around that could properly move.)
So every morning, Luffy would pop on over to Nami, who would change his bandages. And, then, Luffy would push Zoro on into the same room, telling him it was his turn.
And while Luffy’s morning visits with Nami would continue after they had healed, Zoro thought nothing of it. Luffy just probably liked to bug Nami in the mornings. (Or, as Luffy would put it: talk to.)
.xxx.
It was Vivi that brought these visits up.
Why? He had no clue. It was just the norm on the ship that Luffy would go bouncing on over to see Nami whenever he woke up. That Luffy tended to ask Nami now to stand watch whenever he took a bath.
Vivi had asked around; wondering if their captain and their navigator were in any sort of relationship.
(This, of course, was denied by all of them. Of course not – no, that couldn’t be.)
It made them all wonder though: could it be?
Of course, the Merry being a small ship, Nami had found out the very next day.
She denied the claims, and by process of elimination, found out that it was Vivi, of all people, to raise those speculations.
The two of them soon went off alone to talk about it.
(Whatever became of that conversation, Zoro would never know. But regardless, Vivi had stopped asking questions.
.xxx.
When Nami got sick, things were rocky.
They were all out of sorts. Worrying for Nami, all sleeping by her. Vivi was sleeping by her side, head and arms resting on the bed. Luffy paced and did everything that he could think of to help.
Eventually they ended up at the Drum Kingdom.
Eventually they met Dr. Kureha and Chopper.
Eventually shit hit the fan.
.+++.
Nami woke up to an accusing gaze.
“Stupid, stupid girl.”
An old woman was staring down at her.
“You weren’t walking around with your stomach exposed on a prehistoric island, were you?”
The doctor, as she introduced herself as, explained the nature of her condition. And how she should continue to rest for another three days. But there was something else in her eyes.
“Your idiotic captain and cook are alright. I had to treat them for frostbite and hypothermia and their injuries but-”
(Nami remembered. She remembered Nako ushering her into Luffy’s room. She remembered that pained, fearful, meek look on Luffy’s face. She remembered. Remembered seeing as Luffy…)
She had sharply inhaled.
Before she received a slap to her face.
“Stupid girl!” There was some muttering under her breath as the doctor shook her head before continuing. “…I figured that it was you. That job could have only been done by somebody else – the way that it was wrapped. At least it appeared to have been done in professional manner, even if sloppy. Did somebody instruct you?”
Nami rubbed at her face – feeling a mixture of both shame and anger. Shame at her incapability of not being able to do it while she was sick, and anger at this doctor’s judgement.
“What do you know about it!” She yelled back.
(She cared desperately for her friends. Luffy… he had saved her village. Had saved her. Of course she would do anything for her friends and their happiness. Vivi too… she couldn’t just stay here for another three days! They had to get to Alabasta!)
Her fists were clenched. “Do you even know what he’s going through? The pain in his eyes… that fear. He was afraid, you know? Afraid that I’d reject him…” Nami shook her head. “And the doctor in my village showed me what to do. He takes it off at night, you know? The last few days… he might not have been. Because I’ve been the only one to do it. I’m… the only one that knows…”
(Luffy made her promise. Not to tell them. Not that she would have anyway. It wasn’t hers to tell.)
There was a sigh from the old woman, and she lit a smoke.
“Well, I’m glad to hear that his body has some rest. Even though his body is made of rubber, it’s still not good to be constantly…” She shook her head.
A little creature ran through the room. Quickly followed by her crewmates.
“Take him. He can help the two of you. My little reindeer…”
.+++.
Humans really were hard to understand. It was when he first started treating the strawhat man, taking off those drenched, cold clothes. But the moment that Doctorine had screeched at him to separate the strawhat from his crewmate was really when he had gotten confused.
But he took the blond-haired man to another room, and continued treating that man instead, hearing Doctorine mutter expletives to the frost-bitten, hypothermic boy.
It wasn’t until after that he had been informed of the situation at hand.
Apparently Doctorine had noticed something that not even he had. (Sure, he noticed a few abnormalities, but he figured it was just the fact that the strawhat had been carrying the orange-haired girl for so long…) Perhaps it was the fact that he mentioned that the captain had smelled funny that was what tipped her off.
Or maybe it was just because she had far more experience than he did.
So when he was finished with the blond man, he knocked on the door and Doctorine had let him in.
“Chopper, the reason I had you take that man to another room was…”
And Choppers eyes grew wide as Doctorine explained. And he understood – far more than he would have thought. He understood this person wrapped in blankets laying in bed. Well. Maybe. Doctorine also said she wasn’t too sure, and she couldn’t be until they woke up. But the signs were there, and she hadn’t wanted to risk anything.
So all they could do was wait.
.xxx.
It was the blond haired man that woke up first. Demanding to know about Nami. And then followed a bit later by inquiring to know about Luffy.
His own name was Sanji, and he had an explosive personality.
So Doctorine explained about Nami and that she was being treated. But also was careful in choosing her wording about Luffy – this guy’s captain.
They didn’t know the details yet after all.
(One thing Chopper quickly realised was the difference in the way that Sanji referred to Nami over Luffy. It made him further believe that Doctorine was right.)
“So that bastard’s alright? Damn fool, dragging both of us up the mountain. I told him to leave me.”
With a nod, Doctorine had left to go check up on Luffy.
Yes, it was a good thing they separated those two.
.xxx.
The first thing out of Luffy’s mouth was: Nami.
And then it was a shriek, demanding to know where they had put his clothes.
“Drying. We wrapped you in blankets to keep you warm, as they were soaking wet.” Doctorine said in her no-nonsense voice. And then she lifted her leg, slamming it down on the table next to the bed before letting the roll of bandages fall from her hand. “But first things first, could you care to tell me just why these bandages are days old? You don’t seem to have any injuries to your ribs.”
“It’s the Grand Line.” Luffy said, looking to the side and stuck out his lips. “Not a lot of time on our hands.”
Doctorine sighed.
(This guy was bad at lying.)
“While it’s obvious you’ve eaten a devil fruit, that doesn’t mean you are invincible!”
Chopper got out of there before Doctorine started her scolding screaming fests.
.xxx.
“There. That should do it.”
Chopper had taken over what had been Nami’s job until now. Sure, she did a relatively decent job but… Not to mention he was the doctor on the ship. This was his job to ensure the well being of his crewmates, whether it be mental or physical.
He looked up at his captain after a moment of silence. “…Have you considered telling them Luffy?”
(It fell quiet again.)
“Nami knows and I know, and we don’t hate you.” He placed his hand on Luffy’s bare shoulder. “Nami seems to understand, and… I really understand. Neither of us thinks of you differently. And, hey.” Now Chopper was laughing. “If they can accept me, a monster of all things, then certainly they’ll all be fine with it!”
Luffy looked at him now.
“They will find out eventually Luffy. It’s better to tell them yourself and with your own words then let them find out by accident or necessity. Like Nami and I.”
To be honest, Chopper was surprised that Luffy nodded.
.+++.
Luffy was sitting beside Nami and Chopper. He called everybody over.
“H-Hey, guys. I gotta tell you something…”
(What had made Luffy look like this? Never had he seen his captain look so meek or scared.)
Nami was squeezing Luffy’s shoulder. Chopper was rubbing his back. And Luffy was fisting his pants.
“I-I mean… it’s better for you guys to hear it from me, then to find out. Chopper said that.”
Nervous… Luffy was nervous.
“Just spit it out already Luffy. I gotta make breakfast.”
…Stupid cook, couldn’t he read the atmosphere?
“Food?”
Luffy had perked right up at the mention of food.
(Huh, okay, maybe he wasn’t that stupid.)
Luffy was calmer now, still tense, but not as much as before. He took a deep breath.
“I’m not really a guy.”
Nami shook her head and squeezed Luffy’s shoulder. “...Luffy…”
Not really a guy?
“I mean… I am but… I wasn’t born one.” Now, Luffy was hugging himself. “If that makes any sense. I’m sorry I didn’t tell any of you, but I thought you would all…”
Zoro sighed. That’s what this was all about? He shook his head and moved over to ruffle Luffy’s hair. “You’re my captain Luffy. The man who’s going to be the Pirate King, right?”
Luffy beamed up at him.
Then Usopp moved over, a hand being placed on Luffy’s other shoulder. “Who gives a damn about that? Luffy is Luffy, and if he’s a guy, then he’s a guy.”
Vivi was smiling down at them, giving all of them thumbs up.
And they all looked over at Sanji.
“That’s it? Stupid shitheads interrupting breakfast. Nami~ Vivi~ What did you want special?”
And their captain was laughing.
