This is a rant I've been meaning to get off my chest for a while, but the conception on Tumblr, AO3, and sometimes here, that Jake is capable of "teasing" Dirk, and all that implies, irks me deeply.
Let me be clear: Jake English is not self-aware. He, in Canon, never does anything resembling self-awareness, maturity, emotional boldness, or anything else that requires a spinal column. This includes apologizing to anyone, talking about his problems in a way that doesn't end up being selfish, teasing someone, particularly Dirk, or transitioning. (I maintain this especially; he does not have the boldness, maturity, self-awareness, or nerve to have transitioned his gender presentation pre-Act-6.)
He has an *understanding* of pranks, if we allow Paradox Space as evidence, but that's it. He makes *Tavros* look like a fully-roleplayed-into-Class-shift Lord.
You know what the popular Fandom perception of Jake, as a member of a DirkJake relationship, lines up with? *John*, before his main writing trait became a deep, all-consuming depression and repression thing.
Like, John’s original Act 5 and earlier characterization before his underreaction to his dad's death and the spiral that sent him down towards his current "transition would not save her" characterization is what people use for Jake (charming, funny, actually seems to have his shit together enough to maybe be transmasc (man, remember *transmasc John*?), and, most importantly, seemingly capable of dealing with the levels of vaguely sociopathic bullshit that an even-close-to-accurate Dirk would throw at him), but DirkJohn/JohnDirk is less popular, to the point of not having a consensus order, simply because Jake and Dirk are *coded* as liking each other.
I think a lot of people miss that DirkJake is fundamentally the Equius of relationships; Hussie isn't one of those writers that feels pride in finding pathos in the ridiculous, but spiteful glee and humor. He genuinely does not care if he accidentally touches people's hearts in a way that doesn't involve Dave, or *maybe* Vriska. The fact is, DirkJake is a joke relationship, which is spelled out very clearly in their conversation.
You know, their conversation. The one they have together. The time we see someone who is actual Dirk Strider, not Hal pretending, not Aranea co-opting a memory, not a Brain Ghost, talking to Jake. That time.
Yeah, that doesn't exist. DirkJohn has as much conversational basis as DirkJake.
Edit:
LESS! GAME OVER! "I FAILED"! LESS!!!
DirkJake is a joke, a long, subtle one being made on everyone who saw Dirk's affections and immediately wanted him to get together with his disabled(?) ongoing harassment victim. Hussie was having a lot of fun making it seem like Jake found it important in the Masterpiece, I'll tell you that much.
@thelifetimechannel/@geejaysmith/@clonerightsagenda did magnificently wringing blood from this stone, I really do mean that, their Alphas are genuinely written better than Canon for 3/4, but that's all it ever was; every DirkJake writer is the YouTube comments under [this video](https://youtu.be/B7bpv5xyrOY?si=wYTCFDHM5ZzOY8fp) saying Equius could ever have been more than what he was.
TL:DR
1, Jake is pathetic, and we should remember this.
2, Hussie is a jackass who hates us one and all for the sin of caring and everything he has done with this franchise since maybe EOY2 has had an ulterior motive, and we should remember this.
3, Most people who write longfics set in SBURBless AUs, whether normalcy or fantasy, and want to ship Dirk and Jake should really be shipping Dirk with John, since now that history of Dirk-Jake interactions that justifies the ship in-Universe is gone at the Author's leasure, John would have the dynamic they want, and they talk *exactly as much*.
4, If you want to trans Jake, [there's a sensible way to do that](https://archiveofourown.org/works/8619856), but there's no in-character way to make him transmasc.
5, Read DDOTA, I beseecheth of you. Like yeah the Striders are emotional to a kinda weird degree but apart from that they really got everyone down right.

Personally the amount of people who are either "Jake is a stupid himbo" or "Jake is actively malicious" blow my mind. No, Jake isn't stupid, and he's not evil. He's a sixteen year old who is implied to have a mental disability and/or brain damage (it's not exactly clear, Caliborn claims they have the same developmental disorder and Dirk iirc worries that Jake hit his head too much, I guess you can take either with a grain of salt but I digress), and has not had meaningful real life interactions with other human beings in years. He is in the wrong for his actions, but it feels. Purposefully ignorant to claim he's just stupid or just evil for them.
He's socially stunted. He wants to emulate heroes in movies but lacks self esteem and experience. If the alpha kids had enough time to be more fleshed out (and let's be real, if Hussie cared about Jake) this might have been explored more thoroughly. He'd never had the opportunity to learn how to cope with a relationship, how to communicate his needs, or understand that he can't control how other people perceive him like he can through a computer screen.
He doesn't know healthy boundaries because he's never had to use them, and this goes both ways (allowing his friends to sexualise him and treat him like an object, as well as constantly complaining about his relationship with Dirk to Jane) Like yeah he does run away instead of communicating with Dirk and yeah he does dump all his problems on Jane. I love Jane, but one of her problems is her bottling up her feelings and people pleasing until everything blows up. She should have told him off much sooner, and while he was being a dick, it was partly because she allowed him to feel like it was okay to do, since she never told him it wasn't after the first few times or when she was starting to get aggravated.
His problems with Dirk are a little more complicated because we're never actually shown their relationship or how it broke down, but from what we can gather, Jake felt overwhelmed by Dirk's intensity and decided to ignore him rather than tell him try and avoid confrontation but leading to Dirk being frustrated and breaking up with him. Dirk claims he feels like he bullied Jake into a relationship, and though I personally think that's him making it seem worse than it was, it does mean that Dirk probably was trying to go too fast. I've best heard it is Jake being an introvert pretending to be an extrovert.
This is not to say I don't think people can't dislike or even hate Jake, but it's like. Idk. Misinterpreting a character and disliking that version of them is a little redundant to me.

thinking tonight about the bruce wayne that went through horrific trauma and decided he would never be unprepared again, that he would prevent as much pain as possible from occurring to others in the future. the bruce wayne that saw a boy who had been orphaned, recognized his rage and his hurt, and decided to help however he could. the bruce wayne that looked at a kid jacking his tires and wondered if he could use something to eat. the bruce wayne who doesn’t know how to leave well enough alone. the bruce wayne that started keeping lollipops in his tool belt to calm down and distract kids. the bruce wayne who loves his city fiercely, who wants things to be better than they are and fights to make them that way, both day and night. the bruce wayne who funds social programs and leads with compassion whenever he can. the bruce wayne who wants his kids to be happier and better than he is. the bruce wayne who doesn’t work alone, who’s best friends with superman. the bruce wayne with routines and habits and plans and backup plans. the bruce wayne with layers. the bruce wayne who is awkward and paranoid and angry and protective and traumatized and loving and strong and brave and relentless. the bruce wayne who is so, so imperfect, but loves, even when a part of him wishes he wouldn't.

Alpha kids and why I like them (AKA the loneliest kids in paradox space)
(Elaboration under the cut.)
To get the nitty gritty out of the way, I like the Alphas because they're so openly flawed and relatable as characters, yet incredibly talented and ambitious in their desire to achieve and succeed, even though they're doomed. They're doomed to never even come close.
Take a look at the starting of the Beta's session, versus the Alpha session. The beta session starts in spring, a season thematically connected to nature, new beginnings, change, and opportunity. Their story grants them the chance to change and grow and realise their full potential, of which they do with the help of the trolls. They are the heroes, they are the ones that will create a new world.
The Alpha session starts in fall, otherwise known as Autumn. It's fitting that it's called the fall, given it truly is. Fall symbolises the late stages of maturity, decline, decay, and death. Their story is not one of creating, of realising their potentials. They were told to wait. There was to be no positive growth, no positive development or true adventure and beginnings, the planets they inherited were barren, and with only each other as company, it put a strain on their relationships that broke them apart. They were never called heroes. They were called Nobles. Their session, their entire lives, were ruled by the VOID. Not BREATH.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Even their tools that we first learn of them using are thematically on par. The betas, with their alchemiter, create a retinue of cool things to use, upgrade their fraymotifs, so on. They create and thrive. The alpha session is given a gristwidget, to conserve and survive.
They struggle. Terribly. The one thing that was supposed to save them, to be the biggest thing in their lives, was a massive disappointment and year long wait with nothing that much going on. They struggle with seeming independent, never feeling like enough (again, the void) and their expectations were such a let down for what they all expected.
The game was supposed to be the time where they reunited, where mind you, they saw their LIFE LONG friends, and finally had the chance to grow and change with each other, but it fell first. To quote a buddy of mine.
youre telling me they were given horrible starts and the game that they were anticipating their entire lives ended up killing them and oh it started a downward spiral of the very bonds theyve spent so much working up to? to.. wait for better people to save you? fuck my life man.
They resonate me because they have such high expectations for themselves and refuse to communicate because of that, because for so long they've been doing it on their own it becomes genuinely hard to talk about the things that suck. There's a VOID separating them all, whether it's Janes VOID in knowledge, the VOID that Roxy handles by indulging in underage drinking, the VOID of Dirks heart, splintering and constantly plaguing his thoughts, or the VOID that Jake has to struggle with as he borders on knowing, and being willfully ignorant if it means he can be comfortable. There is a VOID. A VOID separating them from their friends, from their achievements, and their potentials.
It's so hopeless. Their aspects, their themes, their stories and relationships, they're never enough, it's a struggle of not being enough. Do you know what it's like to finally make a change and oh, it turns out it's going to be debilitating to you? You get your big break and.. it's not it.
Their expectations crashed on the shores of opportunity and they could only watch and wait for their ancestors, who they never got to truly know to save them. The true heroes. Even their alpha versions were defined as heroes, adamant on fighting the condesce and bringing her down. They were never shown as human beings, they were yet another expectation to hold themself up to and aspire to be, which they could never surmount to.
They struggled to amount to something in their lives and they fell short. They became for the most part worse versions of themselves, and they blamed themselves terribly for it. Their moment isn't a rise, it's a fall. Everything just got worse. They're stuck with that feeling of insecurity, of inadequacy, that void, because they couldn't do what they needed to do as well as their dancestors, the kind of "I know we were doomed to fail and there's nothing we could've done to change it, but I feel like we are lesser for not finding a way."
The guilt that the betas had to go for YEARS to get a happy ending, and they didn't break as much as the alphas. The betas seem so much stronger than the alphas in a "if THEY could handle it, couldn't YOU GUYS handle it?" way, but it's not about which group had it harder, it's different. The alphas had so much bullshit happen, more than the betas, because they didn't really have the exposure to outside world that told them "hey you shouldn't always hold yourself to such high expectations constantly it will do a number on you if you expect so much from yourself and your peers." but it didn't exist.
The betas didn't grow up in shattered worlds. Maybe they grew up in households that weren't intact, but it was never the same level as the alphas, not even close. The alphas were broken from the start, in time, in space, in beginning. A VOID. They're so unbelievably tragic for that.
And the saddest most tragic part is. We don't see them change for the better. We see them *come to terms* with their flaws, but in ways that are detrimental in the long run, it's almost fitting that the only one that adjusted for the better was Roxy, Rogue of Void, and even then she indulges as soon as she's given a chance to do so. Because it's hard to grow up and change your ways. It's hard to grow up and change and grow and nobody really understands.

THOUGHTS ABOUT THE HOMESTUCK KIDS AND THE INTERNET AND FRIENDSHIP (copied from discord with additions):
the beta kids represent the fledgling online friendships made as a kid on the internet, sorta surface level cuz no one knows abt their emotions very well yet, mostly goofy fun, but the people from across the world that you finally feel a common link with and feel belonging with
whereas the alphas represent the isolation that comes after centering your life online and with your internet friends and Growing Up without that model of real life friendship or love, and how the distance always seems to grow when you spend so long knowing someone and never being able to see them, and growing up into ALL the messy teen emotions,
AS WELL AS both mirroring the maturing of the internet from more just meeting people for fun and talking about interests in forums and stuff (betas) to Social Media (alphas) where things are monetized (jane with the condesce) and addiction is promoted (roxy) and sexuality and gender are on full blast (dirk and jake) and romance is amplified (everyone, goes along w messy teen emotions) and people are objectified (jake) and people are forced to seperate themselves and define themselves (dirk)
These kids are relics of internet ages and growing up… betas struggle with making real deep emotional connections because of their immaturity, whereas because the alphas only have each other and are so disconnected outside of Talking on Tumblr or whatever (meanwhile their teen feelings are going crazy) they struggle with actually functioning and not wildly hurting each other because of their underdeveloped empathy.

Thinking intensely about the rest of the Alphas never telling Jane anything, possibly out of some misguided notion that she just wouldn't 'get it', that she'd keep denying the apocalypse and what the future holds for the company she's been raised to be the literal heiress of
thinking intensely about Jane being even angrier to find out that they were right about the apocalypse but not because it's true but because rather than trying harder to make Jane believe it and take the plunge by being more emotionally vulnerable about it, they just decided to preemptively give up and make it seem like everything was for the most part fine! nothing to see here! everyone's just got their private lives, y'know!
because like Jane's inquisitive! She's investigative! She's stubborn as a mule, sure, but I feel like eventually she would have realized there was some truth to what her friends are saying!! but none of them ever even give Jane the choice to come to any conclusion herself, and then they get to sit back later and say, "well, we just didn't want to hurt you," but all that does is deflect blame, doesn't it?

He is in fact not cool with his friends killing people he just can’t do shit about it and the fact that he thinks he can do smth about (and does!) when it comes to his kids is like a major point
#like one of the main#Idk if theme is the right word#but issues surrounding Batman in general and Gotham specifically#is the high standards he holds not just those closest to him to but also the people he controls#NOW DONT GET CAUGHT UP IN UR GUT REACTION CONTROL IS A STRONG WORD BUT IM USING IT FOR A REASON#like i think the fandomification of the batfamily and seeing every character as reliable in the way they tell their own stories#is making people forget that yes bruce lowkey controls them#like not in a mean way or whatever but as much as dick and Jason rebel and say ‘fuck you old man I have my own people to take care of’#at a snap of Bruce’s fingers where are they?#right back in Gotham#which ppl say is an issue with writing and I agree like they really just can’t take anyone away from Gotham#but THATS meta like the in universe conclusion is what creates in universe analysis#and these issues are being spoken about from an in universe pov#that was just me justifying my point anywayyyd#what im saying is that like#in conclusion Ppl are forgetting that Bruce is scary and still runs this shit lmao#like a few snappy quips about emotional distance and some ‘X deserves better’ fics is making yall forget shit like spyral#or at least how it went down and ended up today and what that says about the characters involved#it’s tragic and Ik we like to ignore that but like. when look at shit like the no killing rule#yes bruce thinks he’s being slighted or failing whenever his kids kill someone and they to an extent think that too which is why they don’t#do it#or at least partly#even for Jason that’s why the killing is not just what needs to be done it’s a form of rebellion for him#everyone who agrees jason should just leave Gotham but still present as pure rebellion and anger and spitting at Bruce don’t get why Jason#should leave is all I’m saying#that’s why Dick never got away#it’s still all about Bruce#even if we don’t want it to be#reading this back it’s disjointed as hell but I’m not fixing it if u get it ily heh just a peek into my dark mind#if u don’t it’s not ur fault not everyone can withstand the alphas prowess…

I really want to do more hometuck analysis and talk to others about those more often so Idk
I imagine if the messages Jane gets of “CEASE REPRODUCTION“ can be seen as a metaphor to the kids internalized homophobia and transphobia, a sort of mockery of how inadequate they feel over being gay and trans therefore not being able to do any reproduction.
(Btw I see Jane and Dirk as transmasc, while Roxy and Jake are transfem, but you can see them on other ways and still get the general vibe, their frustrations with their gender, their exaggerated gender performance, Roxy wanting to be a parent and Dirk being disgusted with the idea)
And that runs together with the concept of a dead session, a session that can’t “reproduce“ which means create another universe, they are on dried out planets and have no hope of progressing through the game.
Anyways, the flashing images telling Jane to cease reproduction are interesting to me because one would come to the conclusion that those messages influenced Jane specifically and in turn her dead session, but whenever Jane is taken over (trickster and crocker tier) she is obsessed with the idea of having babies (with Jake specifically), which feels odd since one of those modes is literally being “controlled” by HIC who is against the idea.
It feels like those messages had an opposite effect on Jane, maybe the CEASE REPRODUCTION messages were so on the nose they felt like a mockery of it’s own message, it felt like Irony, not to mention the subliminal messages were so obvious to look at Jane herself notices them.
So it links to the theme of EXTREME PORTRAYALS=MOCKERY we see on the Alpha kids gender presentations, Jane behaves as an old timey 50s housewife, Jake as a masculine colonizer figure on his Beta univese, Roxy’s over the top interest in boys, Dirk’s entire cool dude image. an extreme portrayal of HIC’s desire to change Earth into Alternia 2 is expressed through her subliminal messages, the Alpha kids come off as parodies of gender roles because of how obsessed they are with the idea of fitting into the contexts they were raised in and 2010s ideas of gender.
So maybe it is appropriate Jane despite being the most affected by the Batterwitch’s propaganda is the one who tries to have babies whenever she can, it had an opposite effect because those messages felt like stark reminders of something she didn’t want to, of a world she couldn’t fit into, she was always destined for a dead session, for an unrequited romantic quadrangle, of being on a sterile session, it would have an effect on her and on all the other kids, it’s being constantly reminded of how “unfit“ for creating an universe/reproduction they are.
But on a happier note, by the end if they want to have kids they can just eto-biology some, they left the game, the new universe was taken care of, they don’t need to see themselves as “unfit“ anymore because they don’t have to be on a game that’s entirely about reproduction, they can be fine now even if their life long mentalities will need to change on this new setting.

Thinking about how every single one of the Homestuck kids (assumedly) grew up pretty isolated from other people, and so their social interaction skills aren't developed at all.
Like over the internet? They're fine! They're great at that! But in person? It. Does not go well
The last remnants of humanity are a bunch of awkward teenagers who don't know how to have face to face interactions and I think that's beautiful

What else can I even say about dirkjake at this point ummm. Dirk being orange and a man puts him at odds with Jake's fantasies for a relationship. His walls are plastered with blue women. But!! They're all unobtainable in that they are not Real.
Even in his interactions with Aranea he believes himself to be dreaming of a blue alien girl- and apparently he dreams of neytiri, so that tracks- but this also happens to be the first time he manifests brain ghost Dirk, who is kind of mean and threatens to give him a boner and embarrass him in front of the blue lady.
Brain Ghost Dirk isn't real either - but he is a part of Jake's subconscious. His crush on Dirk! There's some comingling with Dirk's god tier and his splintering, but BGD is better for analysing Jake than Dirk. Therefore he was sabotaging himself in that moment with the image of his orange dude over perusing a blue lady fantasy.
To be frank, Jake doesn't have romantic feelings for Jane. It's very obvious in when he asks her about her crush on him, he's using what he knows to make her panic and deny it so he doesn't have to think about it (classic Jake English avoidance behaviour) and do he feels more comfortable pursuing Dirk. Orange dude over blue lady.
In the game over timeline, Aranea tries to kiss Jake and he freaks out (understandably - his boyfriend broke up with him, he's probably still hungover from trickster mode, his possessed friend is saying very horrible objectifying things about him, he got kidnapped.. though he would have been right to be upset at being kissed without consent) and after she "fixes" him, guess who's there? Brain Ghost Dirk. She kissed his boyfriend, prepare to die. That's right! His orange dude comes to rescue him from the blue lady, quoting the princess bride no less.
The obvious conclusion to make is that Jake really likes Dirk. More than he likes the fantasy of being with any such blue lady, even the one he could realistically be with. The blue/orange parallels intrigue deeply! Complimentary and opposite colours.
Complimentary in that Jane and Dirk are best friends but opposite in that they're romantic rivals, and despite Jake's track record of seemingly being partial to a bluebell dames, he dates Dirk. When he has to kiss his head he mentions (iirc) that this isn't how he thought it would go, meaning he'd actually thought about kissing Dirk beforehand.
I'll let you guys know id I can come up with some dirkjake stuff I've never talked at length about before 👍

It will actually never cease to baffle me that people got so up in arms about the Trickster Mode “Caucasian” bit because “The Kids are Aracial”, and will parrot the point that “The Kids(/Trolls) are Aracial” to hell and back, when like… It’s just not true?
I’m sorry, but you physically cannot have a humanoid character design lack racial characteristics. The only thing you give away by trying to make an “aracial” character design is what you think the racial default is. Considering White Supremacy is the social default in the Western World, more often than not, people will view the “racial default” as white. It lines up with how “white” as an identity works. “White” has never had a set definition, it changes all the time specifically to exclude more and more people- like Jewish people, Italians, et cetera. “White” is defined, historically, as “Lacking Race”, so oftentimes “Aracial” tends to just mean “White”. “Aracial” features always completely exclude Black features, and that’s not by accident.
The character designs in Homestuck have white features. I’m sorry, you’re not convincing me that the Kids are meant to be entirely racially neutral when they’re consistently depicted in the comic as having straight hair and Eurocentric features. The Kids have always been white, it’s just that people view whiteness as the racial default and everything else as of an aberration of that whiteness. Getting mad at the Trickster Mode “Caucasian” bit for “saying the kids are white” or “confirming they are white” is completely unreasonable when they’ve never been depicted as anything other than little white kids by their designs the whole entire time.

Hi tumblr user Zan0tix, I have to say that I love that you draw Jake as big and hairy AND fem. It's such a rare combination outside of mean-spirited caricatures, every time I see your Jake I get a big smile on my face. :)
Tumblr media
Hi tumblr user HermitCyclop ^u^ here is a jake drawing for you 🫶
The transmisogynistic demonisation of these features is so maddening!!! I agree! Im glad that the intent (appreciating these features) of my jake design reaches you c:
GOING TO PUT IT UNDER THE CUT BECAUSE I HAVE SO MUCH TO SAY. But jake english gender meta because i think about it Too Much and am taking this as an excuse to infodump abt it. 😁
The alpha kids and their specific defiance of both homestucks gendered narrative AND real life societal expectations are so fun to think about to me!! but since we are talking about jake, his specific defiance of both homestucks models of masculinity and femininity in the context of his queerness is like the reason he is my fav character.
He props himself up that he wants to be the adventure "hero" in the homestuck sense (the hardheaded blue femme fatale) and the western media sense (the hardheaded action man) yet whenever pressed to actually act on what he says he always refuses or obfuscates. Because really what he wants is to just be himself! I really love the alpha kids because they all just want to be Themselves, not be restricted and defined by what is expected of them, (all the characters have this but the alphas particularly really hammer this home for me)
The heavy emphasis on their beta selves, the heteronormative archetypes they embodied and what went wrong in their lives that manifest as fears in their alpha selves... im always thinking about it. How differently society affects queer ppls choices in life and then the fact that they all get a second chance and getting to watch them live out that second chance and realize their queerness and them all caring so much abt eachother and wanting to aspire to be better FOR the ones they love!!!!!! it always tugs at my heart strings to ponder😢😢
IM SO GOOD AT GOING ON TANGENTS MY BAD but basically. The alpha kids explicit queerness and how despite the comic itself protesting, they are all shown to be deserving of love (of all kinds) And as a person who super heavily relates to jake, his experience with his own identity (and dirks unending adoration and love for him and likewise jakes belief and admiration of dirk) serves to me as a reminder that yknow! We are all worthy of love!! Even if we dont think ourselves to be (this is just the message of shrek.) and there is always hope to be found in things improving!!!!
But in a text thats explicitly queer and not shy about letting its queer characters do wrong in realistic ways i think this message is incredibly powerful and certainly one of the best things about the comic in my eyes. And i love embracing that in my art of the characters! Drawing queer (but here specifically trans) characters all getting to be proud of themselves and their appearances makes me feel proud of myself alongside them and I think its wonderful to be able appreciate other trans peoples experiences and looks through it too!!
I specifically in homestuck fandom dont really see anybody but twinks (usually dirk or eridan LMFAO) portrayed to be fem in any manner 😢 when jake is the most explicitly feminine man in the comic. (I think the transmisogyny thats kind of rampant in this fandom means people dont want to consider those outside conventional attractiveness being feminine or transfem identities outside binary transwomen if even that😭😭) I am being the change i wana see in the world 🙏 The amount of transfem fat gay bear jake in the world increases by one every time i post
