it's so funny to me when people just believe that john is straight because he said "i'm not a homosexual" once because

1. you are believing the words of a 13 yr old who was 12 the day before.

2. people forget that he's 13 when he said that, and that he is not old enough for a proper romantic relationship.

What do you think about Latula x Porrim?

Literally the most gravely underrated thing ever. I view them as moirails, personally. They feel very... Very deeply PaleRom. Very healthily PaleRom, at that.

People really look at the fact that Porrim is the only person who we see not only recognize Latula's cool girl persona, but realize it's born out of genuine mental illness... And Latula feels comfortable enough around her to mostly drop it and be vulnerable around her. And they don't go insane about that on impact? They don't go prompt critical? What the fuck. There's so much depth happening there. There's so much implication. I need 500 more hours of whatever they fuck they have going on. And the fact that this is such an uncommon pairing despite being right fucking there is so, so deeply frustrating, because, like... You're telling me with a straight face that Kankri/Cronus is more popular than this? There's literally nothing there. There's fucking nothing. They're literally just two completely insufferable misogynistic ableist guys who looked at each other for 5 seconds. All Kankri did was enable Cronus being shitty and a liar because Kankri is a bootlicker. Literally all that scene was doing is showing why he got so uppity about the term "Wader"- by definition, he literally is one. That scene didn't mean anything other than "these two suck- here's why!" and people took it as ship material. Latula and Porrim are right there. Aranea and Meenah are right there. Aranea and Porrim are right there. And this isn't a ship, but no one talks about the dynamic that Meenah and Damara had during their game, either. That was so interesting!! These relationships are all so interesting!!

The well of the relationships between the women in the Alpha Troll cast is rich and deep, and yet. And yet. I may have to kill people, Anon.

“Ok Borzoi so why don’t you like Dirkjohn” - somebody, who didn’t ask, but I want to ramble.

I guess it’s funny as a crack ship but in actuality, i feel it would fall incredibly flat and only be viable in an unhealthy way. Canonically, they've got little to nothing to do with each other, and their relationship branches on bullshit in the epilogues and HS2 which just isn't a good judge of Dirk and Johns character so much as a butcher of it.

First, lets get their characters down. Dirk, very introspective to the point of destruction, who’s prone to rambling, overcomplicating and accentuating things in a way to keep up his aura of coolness, of being “totally in control and all knowing”, and sort of socially awkward, failing quite a few times to read jokes as jokes.

John, upfront, more likely to push forward without really thinking, keeps things simple and asks not much, and very much a protagonist figure. He’s blunt, he’s teasing in his humour, and he likes to take the mic out of people and make his own fun.

Dirk is very active. He's willing to go through many hoops and talk around himself, and he needs a conversational partner willing to spar him on it, however, John is anything but that. He's upfront, he brings a hypothetical hammer down into the bush that dirk is walking around. Jake will indulge, so will a lot of the alpha kids, but the beta kids by far are more blunt and straight forward. John would see whatever bullshit Dirk is pulling and think it's stupid and ornery, and shut him down..Dirk would go "okay" and then either try to counterpoint to be shut down, or walk away.This conversation is a relaly good point of reference for how it would go. Note how roxy is going through the general alpha kids bullshit theatrics and ornery, and john instead of getting it, cuts it down with "no thats stupid", and doesnt get the joke.

dirk wouldn't know how to handle someone actually being completely straight up and refusing to humor him, being open about not giving a shit about whatever tangent dirk is on. it might humble him which he definitely needs sometimes but most of the time itd just make him go "ok. whatever man im going to jake's"

and then john says ratio and dirk is reduced to ash.

John and Jake also have a bad habit of comparison in a negative sense, like how he did with davesprite. Jake does it out loud with no regard for others, and John is the type to drop a single “x has already made this joke” because his preference of Dave is so much stronger than Dirk. Dirk wouldn’t be able to beat Dave to the ironic punchline because most likely, Dave has already said it in a language John understands, and John has made fun of him for it already. John doesn’t have patience for long winded games, if he’s not in the mood he’ll just fuck off.

Personally feel like John would be acutely aware that Dirk hates when he shuts him down, but he just genuinely cannot sit here and listen to a “worse version of dave talk like hes pretending to be rose. I just cant.i don’t have it in me.”

I mean I think they’d be funny somewhat, but they would not be happy together at all it would be awkward as hell. Dirk needs someone to pull him out of his bullshit but John just won’t do that. He won’t consider it really that much. They could have funny moments, but the toxicity of their potential relationship sours most of it for me. Dirk is pretty fucking intense in a lot of ways, and hes prone to being a lot.

the alpha kids in general are just way intense due to their fucking isolation whatever thety smoked in those years made them volatile like fucking potent like a chili peppers but thats words for another ramble.

John just isn’t able to match Dirk. He doesn't think enough, he's just going with the flow and dirk needs someone who can either match him on an intellectual level or someone who can match him in an interest way. John just wouldn’t take the relationship seriously enough, which would lead to Dirk trying to figure out something that isn’t there to really figure out. John matches well with someone who has known him for a while and doesn’t have a specific way they want things to go.

homestuck shipping is never really gonna satisfy ppl bc the strength of homestuck comes from the study of individual characters and the more platonic relationships and conversations they have, not the romantic interactions. plus theyre all 13-16 so every romantic interaction they have is super cringe! and hussie hated shipping and thought it ruined the comic which bleeds into the quality of shippable content. however people still want to make homestuck content into nothing but shipping bc thats fandom. and also homestuck shipping is really interesting to fandom bc of the quadrant gimmick and the canon gay people........ even though the easily most satisfying canon ship (rosemary) is often ignored by fandom bc theyre lesbians, which fandom thinks are boring. even though the female characters in homestuck are better written in canon than in many many other media forms. all this to say I obviously do still enjoy homestuck shipping. I like certain fandom things bc I think when examining romance fandom does it better than canon for homestuck specifically. but not a LOT better, often. and I think there are plenty of other interesting things about homestuck to examine if youre looking at canon. but also, give the girls more love!

~*~Legato Quadrant Shipping~*~

Legato ♥ Knives Not so much in an ooooh I think their love is so totally canon uguu~ way (I think your post about the insurmountable wall of mutually insane bullshit between them is a really great breakdown of all the stuff they have both for and against them) but in a way where like...

Legato is devoted to Knives utterly and completely. This devotion is of a sort that it consumes his bodily autonomy and turns him into someone who makes himself a weapon purely to advance Knives's goals. He is pitiably obsessed. This obsession doesn't need to be reciprocated either; he is content to be of use, to be acknowledged for that alone.

He ALSO (although he would never, ever admit it to an outside party) can see the edges where Knives is weak. He held him with his threads when they first met; he senses the shift in the air when Vash and Knives clash on the arc the first time and knows that if he doesn't intervene, Vash will absorb Knives. Knives lets him live despite knowing and seeing these parts of him, and Knives relies on him, even if he won't articulate that's what he's doing.

Legato ♦ / ♠ Elendira Much ado has been made over the years about ships with red/black flips, but I'm here to tell it to you straight and say that the REAL shit is a good pale/black flip. The way that mutual respect and mutual annoyance are inexorably linked!!! They way that only someone who hates you soooooo bad can know your weak points in a way that would allow them to cover for them!!!!!

It's pretty clear that Elendira doesn't like Legato- she takes clear annoyance that Legato is the only Gung Ho Gun without a number, she """jokes""" about killing him for being useless in front of Zazie, she drags him back from the Dragon's Nest riddled with her nails. While Legato's own feelings on her seem to not be quite as aggressively negative, he does still act petulant and dismissive around her when she tries to antagonize him.

And yet... it's not all just hate. While Knives is the one who sends Elendira to rescue Legato from the Dragon's Nest, Elendira herself tries to intercede and stop Legato from interfering in the fight between Knives and Vash because she feels he'll be outclassed and smashed like a bug. She's clearly impressed and grateful when Legato saves them from Zazie's treachery, AND when the poison takes effect on her, one of her first thoughts is to wonder if Legato is already dead... enough so that she drags herself to where he should have been. When Elendira dies, Legato senses it and takes a moment of pause in his fight with Vash before promising he'll join her soon.

I'm always grrr about things that try to simplify moirallegience into just "TEE HEE BESTIES" -- I don't think a moirail/kismesis flip relationship between Elendira and Legato would be the sort where they're braiding each other's hair one day and stabbing each other the next, but I think there's a lot you could dig into with their relationship as one of mutually respect for each others' power, mutual annoyance that Knives gives the other the time of day, and an irrepressible need to make sure that the other gives their ALL in everything they do.

...And now.

Allow me to show you my final big brained quadrant thought:

Legato ♣ Wolfwood ♣ Vash GETS UP ON A CHAIR WITH A MEGAPHONE: KNIVES APPOINTED WOLFWOOD TO AUSPISTICE BETWEEN LEGATO AND VASH!!!!!!!

Cuz like. For all that Legato is sometimes in spades for Elendira THERE AIN'T NO INTENTIONS MORE PITCH THAN THE ONES LEGATO HOLDS FOR VASH THE STAMPEDE. Vash nearly killed Knives. Vash's pacifism irritates every viewpoint on how Legato sees the world. Legato wants to fucking destroy Vash until not a single speck of him remains.

And that's a problem for Knives because like. Mmm, holds back a yawn, you know he's kiiiind of fond of Legato cuz he's useful, so he can't have anything happen to Legato. And as for Vash, well, no one's allowed to lay a finger on Vash but Knives (because he wants him in every quadrant like a desperate fool what) and if he lets Legato's dysfunctionally aggressive blackrom play out it's gonna end with one or both of them dead.

INSERT NICHOLAS D. WOLFWOOD, PROFESSIONAL KILLER BABYSITTER AUSPISTICE. The Punisher's good at doing stuff, right? So he can follow along and make sure things don't get too unbalanced between Vash and Legato! Problem solved.

Except that Wolfwood is painfully outclassed by these two freaks of nature, an issue made more complicated by the fact that Vash never saw a problem he couldn't try to pale/ash flirt his way through before vanishing into the night but wait maybe he wants more than just helping Wolfwood and vanishing into the sunset??? Also Vash isn't stupid and can tell somethings up??? And so whatever tangled mess is going on with vashwood is there mucking up this perfectly good auspisticeship while Legato makes CRAAAAAAZY faces in the bg.

(And then Wolfwood dies and Legato is free to pursue his blackrom with Vash to the beautiful conclusion of finding meaning and joy through testing his strength against Vash before finally fulfilling the dysfunctional end we all knew was coming the end.)

ANd uh yeah that's my Legato quadrant thoughts.

Piggybacking off the last anon, what is it you like about Jane so much? I find my feelings on her kind of mixed but I lean towards positive.

okay i haven’t read act six in probably like 5 years so bear with me here. *cracks knuckles*

jane is sooo so interesting and it’s really a shame people miss like everything fun about her.

pre-scratch she used her detective work to literally succeed at tearing down the crocker cooperation, to the point that HIC has to fucking abandon ship and head into another universe to have another shot at her evil empire. pre-scratch jane is also fucking hilarious! if you didnt enjoy her antics with john as nannasprite you must just have no heart

meanwhile HIC breaches a new universe, and her FIRST fucking order of business is to NEUTRALIZE JANE CROCKER because of how goddamn detrimental she was to HIC’s plans the first time around.

not ONLY does HIC pump subliminal messaging and brainwashing into nearly every aspect of jane’s life, she also tries to straight up mind control her basically whenever possible! she ALSO sends assassination attempts after jane 24/7! (people will seriously try to say that jane lived a safe normal life… as if she wasn’t almost killed by walking into her backyard.) this is because HIC is fucking scared of jane, as she very well should be!

jane is also NOT a boring weepy annoying crybaby like everyone and their mother complains about. jane is literally the most fucking supportive friend and emotion-repressing dumbass you could ever hope to meet. jane combines john’s emotional repression and jade’s intentional cheerfulness together into one of the most fucked up cases of emotional repression in the whole comic

act 6 suffers from a LOT of shitty writing choices, but it’s not jane’s fault the whole act turns into a soap opera— and she’s ALSO not the only one who acts all soap-opera-y either! literally all of the alpha kids suffer from this, people just like jane the least so they project it all onto her. despite the fact that she did her very fucking best to NEVER talk about her feelings, to the point where she ONLY started telling people about shit when she was mind-controlled or took mind altering substances to make her do so! and you can say “ohhh that’s stupid she shouldn’t repress things in the first place how dumb” but, one she’s sixteen, and two, everyone eats that shit up when it comes from like. literally any other character.

people (cough hs2 writers) act like she would actually be “pushy” with a relationship on jake— as if she wasn’t literally the one who helped him make the decision to explore dating dirk?? because she thought it was the right thing to do???

jane is incredibly thoughtful and mature and people really throw all of those traits out of the window with preference for a version of the story where she Comes Inbetween Their Fave Gay Pairing as if she wasn’t, again, the one who got them together. jane is also extremely interesting in terms of queerness; she’s got the makings of a really interesting arc, not to mention she’s the only human girl that dresses mainly masc! there’s a lot there that people just don’t care to explore.

people just have less patience for the prospit kids in general. not to mention homestuck fans love to be misogynistic and berate jane for stuff they love the men doing, or claim she’s coming between them when she’s not, etc etc. and then because no one was writing fun meta posts about her, nobody ever rereads the comic to grab little scenes or lines to expand the online discussion about her! and then because there’s no discussion about her, people assume she’s boring and don’t go looking for bits to start discussing, which cycles on and on forever until we have the ripple effects we see of that misogyny today. which mostly consists of, “oh i hate jane because she was a villain is hs2”, or, “i know hs2 isn’t canon but i still don’t care for jane because she doesn’t do anything that interests me.” (and she’s only not interesting because of the cycle i mentioned before causing NO ONE to have meta discussion about her).

idk, it’s been a while since ive read so i could be talking out my ass but that’s what i’ve got.

TL;DR: jane is fucking COOL, she just suffers from intentional fandom ignorance. and she’s also a canonically hot, fat, masc woman, so i don’t know what else you could possibly want.

Yeah, KatNep didn't sail canonically, but at least Homestuck's nature as a meta multiverse story that treats fan stories that don't happen in canon as valid due to its nature, with some Lord Englishes that want to destroy those alternatives and just wants his Alpha Timeline stuff to be the only thing. In the endless realm of possibilities, how would you write them starting a romantic relationship with each other? I'm pro'ly tone-deaf and too serious in asking a blog that posts funny-but-somehow-oddly-warm drawings something like this. Or maybe there's fanfic of this ship you'd recommend?

It's very easy for me, a fan, to do a "how it should have ended" style thing. Homestuck is just that series where whenever a discussion is brought up, even with idealistic passion, it will always turn into a rant about how it should have gone.

But ignoring all of that, here's how Katnep could work.

(this is very rambly because im a very rambly person heads up)

The two main things is that they both need to get over themselves. Karkat works on himself a lot throughout the series, letting people in his life, learning to enjoy the company around him without screaming profanity at them, and realizing what he takes for granted. Nepeta is never given that opportunity since she has like 7 whole conversations and then dies.

If she were to survive (which would have to rewrite Murderstuck) then she would have to either get over her silly crush and see Karkat as, y'know, just a person OR she would have to decide to be confident and decide to talk to him, trying to become his friend & then romantic partner.

Karkat brings up in a conversation with Eridan that he does see her as a person, and not the "kitty cat shipper cave girl" but he avoids her because he's 13 and doesn't know how to let her down easily.

If Murderstuck were to still happen, Karkat could console her through the loss of a friend, trying to make amends for how he treated her through her pain. He would have to decide to stop avoiding her and have to help her out, like a responsible leader.

Since Eridan is dead, Karkat also would not have anyone to gossip about relationship stuff with (which was a thing he and Eridan had) so Nepeta could easily replace that conversational hole that Karkat has.

I feel like end-game Katnep would be-

Nepeta no longer holds Karkat on a pedestal, not an infatuation but a friend (romance can happen later but right now she would need to see him as a person and not a cool endgame red romance)

Karkat grows up and stops excluding Nepeta just because he's afraid of the awkward eventual conversation between her and him.

Karkat would start roleplaying with Nepeta and Nepeta would read Karkat's tomes of romantic literature, they could even get into petty arguments about which character deserves which character.

There would be cool motifs between the Blood Aspect and the Heart Aspect. Like could you imagine?

Cool Sufferer Disciple art while Karkat and Nepeta fall for each other, as if they are fated to be together (even if Karkat doesn't care for the ancestor shit.) and yeah idk

This is a rant I've been meaning to get off my chest for a while, but the conception on Tumblr, AO3, and sometimes here, that Jake is capable of "teasing" Dirk, and all that implies, irks me deeply.

Let me be clear: Jake English is not self-aware. He, in Canon, never does anything resembling self-awareness, maturity, emotional boldness, or anything else that requires a spinal column. This includes apologizing to anyone, talking about his problems in a way that doesn't end up being selfish, teasing someone, particularly Dirk, or transitioning. (I maintain this especially; he does not have the boldness, maturity, self-awareness, or nerve to have transitioned his gender presentation pre-Act-6.)

He has an *understanding* of pranks, if we allow Paradox Space as evidence, but that's it. He makes *Tavros* look like a fully-roleplayed-into-Class-shift Lord.

You know what the popular Fandom perception of Jake, as a member of a DirkJake relationship, lines up with? *John*, before his main writing trait became a deep, all-consuming depression and repression thing.

Like, John’s original Act 5 and earlier characterization before his underreaction to his dad's death and the spiral that sent him down towards his current "transition would not save her" characterization is what people use for Jake (charming, funny, actually seems to have his shit together enough to maybe be transmasc (man, remember *transmasc John*?), and, most importantly, seemingly capable of dealing with the levels of vaguely sociopathic bullshit that an even-close-to-accurate Dirk would throw at him), but DirkJohn/JohnDirk is less popular, to the point of not having a consensus order, simply because Jake and Dirk are *coded* as liking each other.

I think a lot of people miss that DirkJake is fundamentally the Equius of relationships; Hussie isn't one of those writers that feels pride in finding pathos in the ridiculous, but spiteful glee and humor. He genuinely does not care if he accidentally touches people's hearts in a way that doesn't involve Dave, or *maybe* Vriska. The fact is, DirkJake is a joke relationship, which is spelled out very clearly in their conversation.

You know, their conversation. The one they have together. The time we see someone who is actual Dirk Strider, not Hal pretending, not Aranea co-opting a memory, not a Brain Ghost, talking to Jake. That time.

Yeah, that doesn't exist. DirkJohn has as much conversational basis as DirkJake.

DirkJake is a joke, a long, subtle one being made on everyone who saw Dirk's affections and immediately wanted him to get together with his disabled(?) ongoing harassment victim. Hussie was having a lot of fun making it seem like Jake found it important in the Masterpiece, I'll tell you that much.

@thelifetimechannel/@geejaysmith/@clonerightsagenda did magnificently wringing blood from this stone, I really do mean that, their Alphas are genuinely written better than Canon for 3/4, but that's all it ever was; every DirkJake writer is the YouTube comments under [this video](https://youtu.be/B7bpv5xyrOY?si=wYTCFDHM5ZzOY8fp) saying Equius could ever have been more than what he was.

TL:DR

1, Jake is pathetic, and we should remember this.

2, Hussie is a jackass who hates us one and all for the sin of caring and everything he has done with this franchise since maybe EOY2 has had an ulterior motive, and we should remember this.

3, Most people who write longfics set in SBURBless AUs, whether normalcy or fantasy, and want to ship Dirk and Jake should really be shipping Dirk with John, since now that history of Dirk-Jake interactions that justifies the ship in-Universe is gone at the Author's leasure, John would have the dynamic they want, and they talk *exactly as much*.

4, If you want to trans Jake, [there's a sensible way to do that](https://archiveofourown.org/works/8619856), but there's no in-character way to make him transmasc.

5, Read DDOTA, I beseecheth of you. Like yeah the Striders are emotional to a kinda weird degree but apart from that they really got everyone down right.

Oh hey, Homestuck 2 updated! I was expecting this to be an 11/11 update since that's a Homestuck arc number, but it's the least important of those by far.

One of the biggest mysteries of Homestuck 2 is who's narrating Candyland with Calliope gone, and the more narration-heavy style of the new team is really calling attention to that. This is very flanderized Jake English dialogue. Also a dramatically more active Jake English than we've seen all...ever?

Under no circumstances can you allow her to get to The Point.

Gonna have fun with that MacGuffin name, huh, writers? It occurs to me that Jake was supposedly a spy the whole time but this is the first indication that he's actually been telling the resistance anything instead of just calling himself a spy as a cope.

I like this art a lot. But also what the hell is Meenah doing here? Last time we saw her, in the epilogues, she was out in space and stole the Ring of Life from John before escaping into a server beacon. Did it lead her into the black hole (lmao get owned), or is this an alternate timeline ghosts? Are her eyes closed in order to drag out that reveal?

As fish puns go, "Prawnference calls" is excellent.

So, Meenah has her eyes closed to prevent me from knowing if this is the alpha version or a doomed ghost, and now she's dropping very vague hints about what the plot point is. This does feel very homestuck, in that it's teasing out the reveals to maximize speculation. Skaia is, of course, related to SBURB, and thus this is confirmation of the fandom assumption that they're going to start a new game, without actually saying much else.

I have no idea why this air vent is Sweet Bro and Hella Jeff style, but Vriska kicking the sound affect is still funny.

The comedy quotient has increased notably under the new team.

VRISKA: John, she's a Vriska. She can handle herself! I'm sure she can take anything this fake-ass timeline can throw at her! JOHN: what?

Wait, John doesn't know? I thought "Everyone 'knows' candyland is fake and that why they're acting so weird they're just LARPing" was kind of my headcanon for a lot of the weirder candy stuff.

VRISKA: This whole universe is like someone's shitty RP, and everyone's out of character! None of this reads! VRISKA: Like, who the FUCK is Yiffy!!!!!!!! Why should I or anyone CARE????????

I don't ship them or anything, but this John/Vriska dynamic where John is kind of the oblivious straight man to all this wacky nonsense is one that Homestuck has been very light on since Act 6.

That was a good update. It was funny, it moved the plot along, and it gave us stuff to speculate about! And the art was really good!

Hussie is not very good at writing Romantic Relationships.

[This is all Stream of Consciousness. Don't mind the meandering.]

On its own, this is fine, of course. That's a skill that sits squarely within it's own niche, and not every story needs romance in it. The trouble with this is how much the notion of Romantic Shipping is embedded to the story, down to defining its own unique Romance System... More than once.

Relationships are a key Narrative Device in Homestuck's storytelling- everyone is aware of this. The unique focus that Homestuck has on the interpersonal relationships that the cast has with one another is fascinating, and arguably one of, if not the biggest reason(s) why people are so enamored with the story and it's characters to begin with. So, that begs the question... If that's the case, why do the Romantic Relationships kind of suck, and why do so many people act like they don't? Moreover, why do so many people tend to push the blame onto specific pairings, rather than acknowledge that maybe... Hussie just wasn't equipped as a writer to write Romance?

Hussie's work has never been particularly focused on the idea of Romance. I can't think of a single piece of media he's released where that's even anywhere close to being on the table, outside of Homestuck itself. Their work tends towards somewhat High-Concept Fiction, with Lowbrow Surreal Humor tied to (usually Body-based) Horror- comics with a clearly communicable premise. Relationships are never truly the core focus- the premise is, whether that premise has the complexity of Whistles: The Starlight Calliope, or the simplicity of Humanimals. The focus was the absurdity of the story and premise itself. Hussie undeniably knew their niche. He knew what he was good at writing and illustrating, and they banked on it. Noting here that none of this is truly praise; think of it solely as a mild dissection.

The point is, to our knowledge, this would have been new grounds for Hussie, and the fact that it quickly became the heart of the story and the main appeal of the comic was most definitely a tricky transition. Luckily, since most of the audience was- and still is- so obsessed with Shipping, many people were quite willing to overlook the fact that the Romance is underdeveloped at best, and downright tacky at worst. From my scope on things, people tend to target Rosemary (Rose <3 Kanaya) in particular as the prime example of Poor Romance Writing, despite being one of the chief examples of Hussie's best work with Romance. The poorer examples tend to get swept under the rug, or even put on a pedestal, with people's mental image of the pairing far overriding their grip of what is and isn't actually canon- from Roxygen's (Roxy <3 Egbert) near nonexistence, to GamKar's (Gamzee <> Karkat) utter failure, to GamTav's (Gamzee <3 Tavros) existence as a joke.

I feel as if part of the issue is the scale of Homestuck's story. It's a Creation Myth that's saddled with a lot of thickly interwoven, tangled lore. The story is more something like a Power of Friendship kind of deal than a RomDrama. The grandiosity of the end goal makes it so that intensely focusing on the little details of these characters lives and their relationship with one another can be difficult to balance, especially considering the sheer size of the cast... Hussie put far too much on her plate as an indie creator to manage all these threads, even if they were good at writing relationships in the first place.

The real meat lies in the Platonic. Homestuck contains within itself a nice variety of very, very interesting friendships that are all but sorely neglected by the average fan, and it's quite upsetting...

I think after the events of Act 6, the character that makes the most sense to me for Dave to end up with is Jake. And I mean this in a CANON! IT FITS THE STORY AND THE CHARACTERS! Kind of way. Not just in a shippers be shipping kind of way. I think they would understand each other. They both would need to grow and mature a bit to make their relationship work, and I think they would care so much about making it work that they would.

Jake liked to travel around as grandpa harley. He liked to go explore, pilot ships, adventure. Dave seemed to like just keeping to himself, and do his own thing, join others sometimes. Jake and Dave would both go their separate ways and come back to each other like no time had even pasted by. They have this opposites attract thing about them but at the same time they are both actually sensitive. Maybe more like two sides of the same coin

I mean.. i guess??

I think i see the the "splitting and then coming back like no time has passed at all" applying moreso to John and Jake than it does Jake and Dave. Dave at heart seeks attention, and even if their bond is superficial at most, I can definitely see him going from "Idgaf about jake english" to "oops! i gaf about jake english" and feeling impacted when Jake starts ignoring him.

In all realness. it wouldnt work longterm. You said it, Dave just sort of likes keeping to himself and works best when someone is ordering him around to do things. Jake however is someone who needs to be constantly enriched by his surroundings to sustain interest, without it becoming too suffocating. When Jake realises Dave will just follow along with what Jakes doing without necessarily challenging or really adding to it, he'll get bored and ditch Dave, or try to aggravate Dave into leaving FOR him because god forbid he communicates.

Hence why Dirkjake technically "work" in the way that Dirk will continue to push Jake back and Jake will continue to bite back because if there's one thing that Dirk and Jake like it's conflict and combat on their own terms due to how engaging and direct it is.

Dave and Jake are both super immature and refuse to really change in my eyes. Like yes, they're aware of their flaws. But being self aware that you're a jackass doesn't always equal that you stop being a jackass. And I don't think they'd work longterm because they recognise the other person is intolerable and if there's anything Jake really fears its being seen as a person.

HOWEVER. There is I guess a silver lining? Ish? I'd see it as they'd feel comfortable telling the other deep secrets or personal reflections on their self through a haze of vices, not because they really trust the other or feel deeply connected, but because THEY DONT CARE WHAT THE OTHER THINKS OF THEM AT ALL. They are not really anything to each other. "The only reason i trust you with my secrets is because i dont care that much about what you have to say or what you do with it because youre just as bad as me and not in a way i pity you but i recognise my aspects in you and also youre not connected to my other friends in a way i care for. We could entertain each other but one of us is going to start biting and the others going to get hurt and thats fine."

Their asses are not fixing each other. They're aware they both suck. This means they're also aware the possibility of sustaining a relationship longterm is low. But there is some comfort, in people that look like your best friend but not really and with none of the quirks that resigns their best friends to the best friend role.

Homestuck: Beyond Canon Upd8 for 3/15/24

Again, I'm late. This time it's due to COVID. Still sick, but wanted to read and react.

We now transition from our angry Kanaya to our mourning Kanaya, as they continue to travel through the void. Someone is trying to reach her. She's a space player, so it might legitimately be Calliope.

Wait. What are you up too, Roxy?

Oh~ That's sweet. I missed that in the panel transition. Roxy just wanted to make sure Kan was warm as she slept.

That "noise" is in Jade's font. Is it too much to ask to see Meat Jade finally reunited with her friends? Or is this just going to be Roxy finding Jade unconscious from her struggle with Calliope?

This is nowhere near as spastic as you could get in the old flute flash from Act 3. Still, nice to see my favorite silly girl up and moving around again . . . and not neck deep in Candy craziness.

"Davekat!"

She's just calling them by their ship, like they've become one person! That's great!

While I long to see Jade, Dave, and Karkat interacting again, it's refreshing to see some new conversations taking place. I don't think Roxy and Jade have had much interaction post canon, and basically none in Homestuck.

Now Roxy is definitely up to something!

Are they accessing the bubbles? I mean, time works all wonky on the furthest ring, so that should be possible. And if anyone could do it, it would be Roxy.

There's Kanaya. Calliope is definitely up to something and has enlisted Roxy to see it done.

I hope we get to see our Calli really soon . . .

Hopefully instead of just taking what she wants, Dead Calliope will actually negotiate terms for how they can protect themselves from Dirk without Jade or Kanaya needing to lose their agency.

So these aren't the original dream bubbles, but something starting due to what Dirk and Rose are up to? Does that mean they've succeeded? Or is this something completely new?

Also, I just realized that's Roxy on Calli's outfit and Calli on Roxy's outfit!

That's one unstable Jenga tower of a Homestuck house. The text beneath it, "What a daring dream." is a callback. But I'm pretty sure we're not talking about furries, this time.

Then again, I'm pretty sure that's Dirk's font . . .

Now it's possible the changes to the house are due to the ongoing struggle over the narrative. But I also can't help but feel like there's meta commentary here as well.

Wow. Dead Calliope is really in their tower. They're not going to let the gang even try to coordinate some plan for what to do when they get there. It feels like they're planning on confronting Dirk directly and putting and end to this right away.

Well that went from whimsical to intense quickly! Dammit, I wanted more of that. But Dead Calliope obviously doesn't care about what we want. As far as they're concerned, we are part of the problem.
