Okay fellow werewolf lovers I have a question for you. Let me start with some background.
So, I *love* fiction about werewolves, and I go out of my way to find books about queer werewolves because why the hell wouldn't I.
I was talking to my coworker about one such series, the Big Bad Wolf series by Charlie Adhara (it's not half as kamp at the title makes it sound). I told him that while this series ended up being one of my favorites, it took me awhile to actually read it because the main character starts out as a cop (spoiler alert: he does not stay a cop for the reason I'm abt to mention) with werewolves being the target of racism in a way that is high key an allegory for the racist system that rewards cops for killing poc. I read the first chapter, got super mad, and put it down for a month or so. But I decided to give it a second chance and see if the author was actually going anywhere with that, and they were. I learned to trust the author and ended up loving the story.
My coworker felt that this was actually not a great allegory though, because werewolves are built for violence, and so saying that they're the stand-in for POC in this scenario is like saying that POC are inherently violent.
This is something that had never occurred to me, especially because in the series, werewolves *know* they're capable of hurting humans, but they're also just regular people - most don't want to hurt anyone, especially not without good reason. Plus, more werewolves are being killed by humans out of fear than werewolves are actually harming anybody.
As a trans person, and also as a person who has dealt with some significant trauma, I tend to like the monstrous aspect of werewolves, who are at the end of the day more than the monstrous part of themselves. Its easy to feel like a monster when so much of spciety portrays you that way, but there are people who will love you not despite it, but because its you, monster and all. I go HAM for that shit. I really liked this story for flipping the usual narrative and making it so that werewolves were just people, just as worthy of love, and having needs unique to their identities as werewolves in order to flourish in society.
But I know that what my coworker said was a good point, and that I'd probably never thought of it that way before because I'm white and seeing things from my own lens of experience. I think that at the end of the day, it comes down to how the author uses the concept and the care they take in portraying their message. However, I want to really think on this more and sort out my feelings about it, and I thought I'd start by casting a wide net of thoughts and opinions to consider.
So my questions to y'all are:
- Do you like or dislike werewolf stories being used as allegories for the experiences of othered communities?
- Is this a concept that makes you feel seen, and if so, what aspect of it makes you feel that way?
- Do you feel that this concept is harmful to othered communities, especially those that are often portrayed as violent as a way to other them?

What do you think of writers of both fanfic and commercial fiction who focus on het relationships in the latter while relegating m/m ships /queer content in general to the former? I understand why this division exists (het is commercially viable and safer, i.e. avoids accusations of fetishization and misrepresentation) but I've seen backlash against it (mostly ignored by authors) and wanted to hear your take.
--
I don't read Naomi's pro work because it doesn't interest me. (What? What?)
If you were genuinely asking about authors broadly... I don't have that much of an opinion. As both a writer and a reader, I really only care about the rising genre of "m/m romance" and other burgeoning Western BL industry stuff. While that stuff may not make it into bookstores, bookstores are dead anyway.
I'm less annoyed at authors than at audience members. We're at a tipping point where we actually have the beginnings of an English-language BL industry, but people are still giving asspats to mainstream publishing for crumbs. With filmed content, I sort of understand because people want lengthy genre TV, not one-off art films, and a lot of the queer media out there isn't very fandomy.
But with novels and novel series, it's just a total failure on the reader's part to be chasing after these fic authors who go mainstream instead of the ones who write shit like Jordan L Hawk's SPECTR series. They're delightfully dumb urban fantasy about a possessed goth twink, the vampire demon thing in his head, and their boyfriend the federal agent/exorcist. Like... do you think Hawk isn't a fandom person?
My favorite shit is like... one of them is afraid of werewolves and the other is a secret werewolf and OH NO now they have to work together as buddy cop partners! (Yes, Charlie Adhara's Big Bad Wolf series is pretty good.) I read early Anita Blake but gayer type urban fantasy crime procedurals, cozy mystery, some high fantasy, etc.
There are gaps though. I wish there were more Asian-flavor historical fantasy and more nonwhite leads who aren't treated in the Good Representation bland-ass way. I'd like to see more varied settings, more OT3s, and waaaaay slower slowburn. That latter is largely an issue because of the format, which is long novellas/short novels marketed at least somewhat as "romance", so the leads need to at least kind of get together in the first book. Mainstream-published urban fantasy and series mystery with B-plot romance can string things out longer, which is sometimes nice.
It annoys me how hard it is to find comprehensive info on this kind of content in a way that would let us 1. call it what it is, which is BL, not the broader category of "queer fiction" or the only-sometimes accurate genre of "romance", and 2. build more of a culture and identity around the non-fanworks stuff, including not just textual novels but other types of media like indie games.
I have a lot of pent up rage over fic fans who claim to want this industry but do nothing to support it.
Weebs are doing a better job than Western fandoms types, tbh. There's something of a push from the sorts of people who go to Fujocon to publicize BL games, webnovels, etc. in English to each other. I just think that it would be good to link up that kind of community more closely with the sorts of people at GRL. (GayRomLit is the industry conference for "m/m romance" and is attended by a lot of the big names in... like... Kindle Unlimited selfpub m/m, basically.)
Authors who go pro in another sphere are irrelevant to what I care about. They may well be tired of only writing about men, or maybe it really is that the media they consume doesn't have female characters they like (but they can easily create them themselves), or maybe they're just old and still see selfpub as what it was 15 years ago instead of the vanguard of queer genre fiction that it is today. (Though, of course, people do go into het selfpub erotic romance all the time from fandom. But, again, who cares?)

I’m reading Thrown to the Wolves by Charlie Adhara and I came across this part.
A werewolf is speaking to our main character, a gay jewish man, and says this.
“Excuse me, but I really doubt you do [understand why a militarized force made to regulate an entire world they know nothing about is something to protest against]. Is there anything so intrinsic to your ancestral identity, to your very definition of self, that having it manipulated, controlled, erased or changed would literally destroy you? Now can you imagine your child trying to hide that very same thing out of shame?”
and for some reason, instead of saying yes, he says no. A Gay Jewish man. But I guess him saying yes would have diluted the point she was trying to make. This is why using magical beings as metaphors for oppression often fail. The fictional race tends to be framed as The Most Oppressed and discussions of real oppression that could have been brought up are thrown under the rug.
I will point out that real oppression was almost discussed in the first book. When Oliver (another werewolf) said something similar to our main character, he didn’t say anything out loud but he did think about how difficult it is for him to be openly gay and Jewish in his field of work. But the book’s main focus was on our main character unlearning his prejudices against werewolves.
(this series is actually very good and I enjoy it a lot but this bothered me)

04. Flowers
Pairing: Sirius/Celeste
Word Count: 1667
Summary: There’s never too many flowers...is there?
-
Leaning back in his chair, Sirius studied the drawing in front of him. Although, it was honestly more of a map than anything else at this point. He hadn’t done this in years. The last time was most likely before he’d joined the army and his siblings had added more beds in the years between then and now.
But he’d finally mapped all of them out, along with the few adjustments he had made since moving back in. There were…more beds and boxes than he’d expected.
Sirius sucked on his cheek and turned the paper a little. There was no getting around it; if he wanted it done in a timely fashion, he needed help. Or he was going to need more days off than he’d planned for.
He knew Ray would give them if he asked, but he didn’t feel right asking merely to plant flowers. At headquarters it was easy enough to work it into his schedule and he already was. But at the house? He only had so many proper days off and they weren’t enough to get all of this done.
The flip side of that was dealing with his siblings and their opinions on what should go where. It didn’t matter that they didn’t live here anymore; they were Oswalds and they had their opinions on planting. But only two people got to dictate what happened to the house now and it wasn’t his siblings.
Spinning his wedding ring slowly around his finger, he shifted his attention to it. The band was plain, exactly like he had wanted it to be, because what it symbolised was what mattered. They were coming up on two years and he’d wanted her to give her a garden that would take her breath away this year. Not that she didn’t love everything that they planted, her excitement from the first shoots to when the last petals fell making all the effort worth it. A thousand times over. He would never get tired of seeing how happy it made her.
“Two years,” he mused. Two years of marriage, but three together and planting flowers. That first and part of the second had been at headquarters mostly, but this was their first spring at the house where they could dedicate proper attention to planting here. Last year Adhara had been born just before and he had let Zeta do most of the work, his focus on his little family. She’d done a good job, making sure to ask both of them what they wanted and if they were happy. But it was different to do it themselves. He wanted them to do it this year.
His lips quirked up. This year they’d have a little helper too since Adhara was more than willing to bury her hands in the dirt at headquarters whenever they took her outside. The rest of the Leaders teased that it was clear she was his daughter, but he’d caught them all crouching down with her, helping and encouraging her to keep digging.
Although she was more likely to just toddle between the two of them as quickly as her little legs could carry her than actually help. But her happiness would be a welcome addition.
The door to his study clicked open and Sirius smiled as he looked up. “Is she sleeping?” he asked.
“Finally,” Celeste sighed, joining him. “She wanted Chutney and Chicory to sleep with her and wasn’t impressed when I said no.”
Sirius laughed. No, Adhara wouldn’t have been happy about that. “Did you give her Sunshine?”
           “Yes. Thankfully it was enough.”
He could imagine. The little lion was a constant companion wherever their daughter went, chubby arms wrapped tight around the toy to keep it close to her. “Lance had no idea what he started giving that to her.”
“He really didn’t, but its wonderful to see how happy it makes him to see her with it.”
It really was. He knew the toy had only been a gift because Lancelot had refused to come empty handed to meet Adhara for the first time, but none of them could have anticipated how she’d latched onto it. They’d learned the hard way and fast not to leave the little lion at home. Wherever Adhara went, Sunshine needed to follow. But seeing the smile that had lit up Lancelot’s face the last time he’d visited and she had toddled into the room with the lion clutched to her chest was just as much of a gift.
Wrapping his arms around Celeste, he gently pulled her into his lap. He waited as she got settled before burying his face in her hair.
“What is it?” she asked when he sighed.
“I was thinking about planting,” he said honestly. “With the new boxes Harr built us and the beds we already have…it’s a lot, Cherry.”
She hummed, stroking her fingers along his bare forearm. “If it’s too much we could save some of them for later.”
“Did I say it was too much?”
Laughter spilled from her. “No,” she said, dragging out the word. “But you were complaining.”
           “I was not.”
She kept laughing, clearly not believing him.
“I wasn’t,” he insisted, pulling back to look at her. “I’m just not sure how we’re going to get it all done.”
She twisted on his lap, looking at his map. “We didn’t add that many last year, did we?” she asked.
He hadn’t thought so but the map was proving him wrong. “It’s enough. I don’t know if we’ll have time to put everything in.”
Celeste gave him a puzzled frown. “But a lot of beds have bulbs in them,” she said. “Those ones don’t have to be included.”
“No, but even disregarding them, there’s a lot of work to be done.”
“When has that ever stopped us?” she laughed.
“Are you sure you feel up to it?” Sirius asked before immediately regretting the question.
“Ah, so that’s what this is about.” Celeste shook her head at him. “I’m fine, Sirius.”
“You’re not fine. You were throwing up again.”
She shrugged one shoulder. “It happens. It kind of comes with the territory, you know that.”
He did know that and he didn’t like it. He hadn’t liked it last time and he didn’t like it this time. It didn’t help matters that neither of them had thought she’d honestly get pregnant so soon after Adhara, but it wasn’t like either of them had actively been trying to stop it either.
“Sirius,” Celeste murmured, reaching up to stroke his jaw. “I’ll be alright. It isn’t near as bad as it was with Adhara. I’ll be able to help.”
He believed her, but he knew she pushed herself as much as he did. Especially when it came to this. They’d agreed the morning after he’d brought her back, that they would plant flowers together every spring and she hadn’t gotten to last year. She wanted to this year and he knew she was going to do her damnedest to see it through. “You’ll wear the hat.”
           “Yes.”
“And take breaks if you need to?”
           “Yes.”
“You’ll tell me if it’s too much?”
“Sirius, it’s just planting!” she protested. “I’m going to be sitting for most of it!”
He pursed his lips, one of his hands moving to her stomach. She was hardly showing but he could feel the difference. He could feel the usual softness giving way to the firmer swell as their child grew within her. “I just worry,” he muttered. “You mean too much to me not to.”
“I know,” she said, running her fingers through his hair. “And I’ll take it easy. Would you feel better if I had someone clear me to do the work?”
He hated that he would. “No,” he said, shaking his head. “You know yourself best. I trust you.”
“You’re never going to forget that are you?” she asked, studying him.
“You gave yourself heat stroke working outside, Celeste. No. I’m not likely to forget it.” Even if he wanted to, it was unlikely that he’d ever forget the way everything had seemed to stop when he’d been told what had happened while he’d been gone.
She muttered something in French, too fast and too low for him to catch. “I’ve been good since then.”
Only because they both knew he wouldn’t let her help if she wasn’t. She was more important than whatever flowers they were planting. Kissing her forehead, he leaned into her and sighed. “Have you decided what you want in the front beds?” he murmured, not wanting to linger on that memory.
“We have irises and daffodils along the fences, right?”
           “Mmhmm.”
They fell into an easy conversation as they discussed what to plant and where to plant it, both of them making notes on the map when they came to an agreement. It took less time than he’d anticipated before they had most of the sections filled in, witha few blanks to see if his siblings had found something new to sell in the shop before they made up their minds on them.
“What do you want to put there?” she asked, pointing to the stone ring he’d drawn in the back garden.
           “A tree,” Sirius said absently.
“We have the peach one we put in last year in the other corner, but it still has a bit of time before it’ll start to produce. Did you have something in mind?”
He rubbed his cheek against her hair. “I know we agreed that we’d decide on everything together for the gardens,” he said, “but I talked to Zeta and she’s already got the sapling growing at Canis Major. It’ll be ready to put in with the rest.”
Celeste twisted on his lap, looking up at him with bright eyes and a soft smile. “What kind of tree, Sirius?”
She knew and he knew she wanted him to say it. He leaned down to press a gentle kiss against her smile and murmured, “Cherry.”

Tumblr media
Cemetery Boys by Aiden Thomas: I liked this book, but I feel like because I enjoyed the reading experience a lot, I forgave some stuff I usually dislike. The villain and motives were pretty obvious so I ended up laughing at the villain monologue a bit, but predictability has never ruined a book for me. Though picking up on the clues and being familiar with story tropes depends on the reader so I can’t say for sure which books are actually predictable. I have consumed so much media in my life that it has become very difficult to surprise me with a logically moving story that gives the reader proper information. Also, I really liked Julian so much.
Brothersong by TJ Klune: It’s the last book and I just love these characters so so much. My favorite parts were around the middle of the book and I liked the ending mostly. I don’t want this to get spoilery so I can’t say much more than that.
The Hanged Man by K.D. Edwards: The best thing about this series are the characters. There were kids in this book and didn’t even dislike them. I still don’t understand the world or magic that well, but I don’t mind. I feel like I know enough to follow the story, but not enough to guess where it’s going. I really like Addam a lot, he’s so good to Rune and I love what they’ve got going on.
Exit Strategy by Martha Wells: Every novella has made me like Murderbot more. I also like the snippets of information we get about the world. The plot in these kind of blend together so I can’t tell what was happening in which book.
The Wolf at the Door by Charlie Adhara: The rest of the month I went on looking for different types of romances and this werewolf one was first. This wasn’t as silly as what I was looking for. There’s a murder plot and investigation that I didn’t really care about at all. This wasn’t bad though, I think it was just the wrong time because I usually like this type of stories.
P.S. I Spook You by S.E. Harmon: This was so much better than I expected. I thought it would be a little overly sweet for my tastes but it wasn’t and the main character is great. I wasn’t bored by the murder investigation in this, but I did hope there had been more of the ghosts that I was expecting.
Prince of Air and Darkness by M.A. Grant: This reminded me a lot of Carry On (Rainbow Rowell) but with more mature content and faeries instead of wizards. It was fine but I haven’t continued the series since. It didn’t leave that big of an impression for me.
Take Care of You by Gianni Holmes: Such drama, exactly what I was looking for. This series started so well and I think I like this younger daddy dom with older sub dynamic. I had to continue the series because the ending just demanded it.
Take Care of Me by Gianni Holmes: And then it didn’t continue so strong. The first one was better and this felt pointless. Somehow too domestic maybe. It just didn’t keep me interested.
Take Care of Us by Gianni Holmes: And then it continued downhill, but I’m very bad at dropping books or series I’ve invested time on. I have to know how they end. I don’t know how one can make daddy/boy dynamic this boring. Sweet, wholesome and domestic is wonderful, but it puts me to sleep in fiction. This one also focused too much on the rest of the families of the main pair and I found them mostly annoying so that didn’t help the situation where I was just waiting for the book to end.
Laurent and the Beast by K.A. Merikan: Ok ok so... Amazing...ly ridiculous. I don’t even know. I had so much fun with this. It’s like a beauty and the beast retelling, with a biker gang, and a devil that makes deals, and time travel, and so much miscommunication. I hate miscommunication but I couldn’t even be mad at it with all the other what-the-fuckery. I am so tempted to continue to the next book in the series, but I’m also a bit scared because I feel like it could do anything.
The Wolf at Bay by Charlie Adhara: I did end up continuing this series and I’m glad because this second one was better than the first. My only real issue is that this gives hardly any information about anything. We only see one point of view and the love interest wolf doesn’t tell him anything basically so the reader doesn’t know anything either. There’s obviously something going on but it’s impossible to even try to guess with the lack of information.

Some random adhark headcanons for your enjoynemnt
Mark kisses Adhara’s forehead / hair a good amount of the time. Despite Mark being this bumbling ball of energy he’s so gentle and tender with Adhara.
Adhara’s a horrible dancer and Mark’s actually not bad so it’s not alien to see Mark to twirl Adhara randomly in their living room.
They’re both pretty cuddly. They spoon sometimes and normally Marks the big spoon because their height difference makes it that way but when Adhara’s the big spoon she looks like a little back pack.
Adhara also likes to just lay on Mark and put her ear on his heart, especially when she’s woken up from a nightmare. It’s comforting to her to hear this thing that makes sure she knows Mark’s alive
Their home is always messy because Adhara is that cluttered organization kind of Mark can get lazy but Adhara gets ocd after a certain point
They always fall asleep on the couch. Normally Adhara knocks out there practically on top of Mark and he’s awake but doesn’t feel like moving Adhara or carrying her to bed so they both fall asleep there.
They travel constantly for like a year after the war. They come home for awhile to see all their friends who keep having kids and then they go back to traveling for awhile. Then Adhara gets pregnant with Tori and they bring her on trips after that but it becomes much more scattered.
They banter but never really fight fight. Mark understands Adhara and he knows that sometimes she struggles explaining what she’s feeling. He’s not easily offended so he lets her get upset and the comforts her when she ends up apologizing to him for being rude.
Adhara has a lot of self doubt especially when Tori’s born because she’s never had a good female figure. Her grandmother was horrible to her, her aunt was dead, her mom wasn’t around obviously. Mark had a decent dad and he stepped so easily into being an amazing dad and Adhara feels like she’ll fail Tori in some way and also fail Mark.
They don’t get married. Partly because promises terrify Adhara and she’s okay with the promise to be with Mark without a ring on it. Adhara doesn’t like fuss and Mark doesn’t want to plan a wedding. He brings it up once but they decide it’s not really for them; the flowers and invitations and white dresses and tuxes and seating arrangements just don’t scream Mark and Adhara.

As a little girl, Lily had never particularly liked her name for three very important reasons. For one, the idea of everyone in the family being named after flowers, while seemingly a good one from the outside, got a little boring when she had to write out Christmas letters to Aunt Daisy, cousin Daisy, and second cousin once removed Daisy; or when someone yelled Rose at a party and four women answered. Secondly, Lily didn't even particularly like lilies. Her favorite flowers were sunflowers, thank you very much, and when boys tried to flirt with her by giving her lilies she usually just got annoyed. Lastly, and most importantly, lilies were a funeral flower, and Lily Evans was anything but a funeral. Lily Evans was, as a matter of fact, brimming over with life. In her third year Lily sat next to Sirius Black in Charms, as he had to be separated from his mates due to misbehavior and Flitwick thought she would be a good influence, and during class she learned three very important things about him. Firstly, he wasn't as bad as Severus made him out to be, and neither were his friends, as long as they were away from Severus. Often times she could depend on them to make her laugh after a long day, and also hanging about Sirius and his mates enabled her to team up with Peter Pettigrew at cards and trick James Potter out of his "vastly over the top riches", as Remus Lupin liked to call them. Secondly, he was immensely posh, and also a pureblood, both of which Lily had known before but never really realized the consequences of, and also was most assuredly not, and so the two of them spent particularly boring classes swapping stories about their upbringings, which culminated in Lily giving Sirius several toy cars for his birthday, which he Charmed to drive through the air and deliver messages to and fro in the Gryffindor common room and dorms. Lastly, and most importantly, his family also named children according to a theme, in his case stars, and so he partially understood the absurdity of it all. The two took to calling each other by different names every time they saw each other, to the rest of the school's bemusement, Lily's favorite for Sirius being Adhara, as it meant virgin and so made Sirius mad, and Sirius' being mushroom, for no particular reason other than when he called Lily it she would clench her jaw every time without fail and he thought it was hilarious. In her fifth year Lily did patrols with Remus Lupin, as they were the two fifth year Gryffindor prefects, and also friends, and so she learned three very important things about him. Firstly, he wasn't as prim as Sirius made him out to be, and the two spent many happy hours cursing anything that was troubling them while on their patrols, including but not limited to extra long essays, strange chocolate shortages (because Peter kept stealing it) and Sirius' tendency to wear Lily's socks, because the two were the same foot size and he insisted her socks were the best for flying in. Secondly, he was absolute disaster, for all he appeared to be neat and clean, and as Lily was near disaster levels as well, they both had to accept James fussing over them as much as he was allowed, especially the time they came back from patrols with a total of one broken nose, three black eyes, six bruised ribs and two senses of extreme cockiness because they had actually won the fight, no matter their injuries. Lastly, and most importantly, he was a werewolf, but that wasn't the really important part. The really important part was that his mates had become illegal Animagus in order to help him, which not only helped their nicknames to actually make some fucking sense, it was also very fucking amazing and gave Lily a new respect for the four boys and their oddly codependent friendship. In her seventh year Lily dated James, as always had rather liked him, and his head had deflated quite a bit, and in the process she learned three very important things about him. Firstly, he liked to give her lavish bouquets, but fortunately was a very good listener and so remembered the time she had complained about boys giving her lilys all the time. Instead, James gave her roses on Valentine's Day, poinsettias and mistletoe on Christmas, violets and buttercups when she was feeling down, and sunflowers for her birthday. Secondly, he was horrible at understanding the value of money and how to save, as he really was disgustingly rich and didn't have to. Lily ended up with quite a few beautiful necklaces she didn't know what to do with until she finally cracked and told James that if he had to buy her something, it may as well be something she needed, and that he could go shopping for clothes with her the next time they went into the village. Lastly, and most importantly, he loved her quite a lot. Enough, actually, to propose to her, and also to agree to name all their daughters after flowers, because even though Lily hated her name, she intended to pass on the tradition, and James didn't really care what the kids were named as long as he had enough to put together a full Quidditch team. In her last year Lily raised her son, as she loved him with all her heart and was in hiding to protect him, and learned three very important things about herself. Firstly, she was restless in the house they were hiding in, and actually couldn't stand being inactive. She started brewing potions for the Order with all her spare time, and would send them to Dumbledore every time someone visited. Secondly, she really did enjoy being a mother, and dreamed of seeing her Harry going off to school to get up to his own mischief, and although she still thought an entire Quidditch team was a rather tall order for children, she would quite like a few more. Lastly, and most importantly, her name may have been an omen from the start. Because Lily Evans was full of life, but she died too soon, all for the love of her son and her fieriness in standing up for what she believed in. A/N Hey babes! Here's some new writing (finally lol) and also the reason I was on the star name wiki earlier this week! I'm not sure about the format of this tbh but I felt like I needed to get something out cause I've been bored with myself frankly. AP tests and finals are coming up quick so don't expect anything new too soon but I do have a couple things in the works and I'm hoping to get one of my classic bullet point posts done before I go on vacation in June. Ty for reading!

The Bright Stars of February
Even with the moon near full, the cold clear nights of February feature many bright stars you can pick out with your unaided eyes in the evening sky. Keep this list handy. They’ll be there for the next month or so. I’ve put their brightness rankings (3rd brightest in the night sky, 7th, etc.) in brackets.
Tumblr media
(Above: The southern sky in mid-February at 7 pm local time features the bright winter constellations, plus circumpolar Perseus with its medium-bright star Mirfak shown here near the zenith.)
Let’s start in the western half of the sky because those stars set first. Look directly northwest after dusk for Deneb (19th), the top star of the Summer Triangle. Deneb is a hot, bluish white star that marks the tail of Cygnus (the Swan). It sets at about 10:30 pm local time.
Next, turn fully around and look very high up the eastern sky. Bright yellowish Capella (6th) will be positioned near the zenith and orange-tinted Aldebaran (14th) will be positioned about three fist widths to the right of it. Capella is the brightest star in the large circular constellation of Auriga (“Oar-EYE-gah”) (the Charioteer), while Aldebaran is the baleful red eye of Taurus (the Bull), whose triangular face is tilted down to the left. Two fist diameters above Capella, you will find the white star Mirfak (35th) in Perseus (the Hero). The sky around Mirfak is a spectacular in binoculars.
When you face south, the well-known constellation of Orion (the Hunter) sits below, and a little bit to the left of, Aldebaran. Orion’s eastern (left-hand) shoulder is the old and bright, reddish star Betelgeuse (11th). His opposite foot is a bluish star of similar brightness named Rigel (7th). Rigel’s 862 light-year distance from Earth is actually almost twice as far as Betelgeuse’s 498 light-years – but it emits much more visible light.
Orion’s three-starred belt is a highlight of the winter sky. From east to west (lower left to upper right) the stars are Alnitak (30th), Alnilam (29th), and Mintaka (67th). The three stars are evenly spaced - almost exactly 1.3° (or about three moon diameters) apart. Orion’s other shoulder is marked by bluish white Bellatrix (26th), and his opposite foot is called Saiph (53rd).
To the upper left of Orion sits the zodiac constellation of Gemini (the Twins). Its brightest stars are yellowish Pollux (17th) and pale white Castor (23rd). Like many twins, it’s a challenge to remember which is which. Castor, the higher star, rises first, just as “C” precedes “P” in the alphabet.
The world’s brightest night-time star sits below Orion. Sirius (1st), also called the Dog Star because it resides in the constellation of Canis Major (the Large Dog), is a very hot, bluish-white star. It’s so bright because it is our neighbour - positioned “just up the street” at only 8.6 light-years away. Sirius has a reputation for twinkling vigorously with flashes of pure colour. This is because it sits fairly low in the sky for mid-latitude residents, and we see it shining through a thicker blanket of refracting air.
While Sirius marks the dog’s head (or his collar, depending on how you connect the dots), his rear foot is marked by a star named Adhara (22nd), which sits 1.2 fist diameters below Sirius. Adhara is a distant and incredibly luminous star located 405 light-years away. Sirius’ bright little sibling Procyon (8th) sits 25° (or 2.5 fist widths) to Sirius’ upper left, under Gemini, in the constellation of Canis Minor (the Little Dog). At 11 light-years, it’s another close neighbour.
Tumblr media
(Above: The southeastern sky in late evening in mid-February lets us preview the bright stars of the spring constellations Leo, Virgo, and Bootes. Arcturus follows the Big Bear and its medium-bright Big Dipper.)
Turning our attention to the east, the bright, white star Regulus (21st), which marks the heart of Leo (the Lion), will be obvious in the lower third of the sky in early evening, and higher later on. After 9 pm local time, the very bright, orange-tinted star Arcturus (4th) will rise in the eastern sky in Boötes (the Herdsman). Arcturus’ name means “guardian of the bear”, because it follows Ursa Major (the Big Bear) around the heavens.
Speaking of Ursa Major, its famous asterism, the Big Dipper, is composed of seven medium-bright stars, three of which are ranked in the top 40 brightest stars (Alioth, Dubhe, and Alkaid). Contrary to popular belief, modest Polaris the North Star, which marks the long tail of Ursa Minor (the Little Bear) and the top of the Little Dipper’s handle, ranks only 48th in brightness.
I’ll post sky charts here showing where these stars are. In February, most of them will reach their highest points, in the southern sky, before midnight - perfect to catch your eye through a south-facing window before bedtime. Good hunting!
The Moon and Planets
Tonight (Sunday) the moon will buzz the southern edge of the large open star cluster known as The Beehive (or Messier 44) in the constellation of Cancer (the Crab). The moon and the cluster will both fit within the field of view of binoculars or a low magnification telescope, but the moon’s brilliance will mostly overwhelm the clusters’ stars. The moon sweeps past or through that cluster frequently because the Beehive’s position is only a finger’s width north of the ecliptic, the great circle around the sky that most solar system objects’ orbits are parallel with.
Tumblr media
(Above: On Sunday evening, February 17, the nearly full moon will skate past the southern edge of the large open star cluster known as the Beehive. Put the moon just outside of your binoculars’ field of view and see if you can spot the clusters’ stars.)
The moon’s disk will continue to fill with light until Tuesday morning. At that time, the February full moon, known as the Snow Moon or Hunger Moon will occur among the stars of Leo (the Lion). Since the moon will reach its full phase about midway between Monday and Tuesday evening, to the casual eye it will appear full on both nights. But if you look closely at the moon on Monday night, you’ll be able to see that the craters in a narrow strip along the moon’s left (or western) edge will have shadows. On the following night, that textured strip will migrate to the moon’s opposite (eastern) edge because the moon has crossed the line connecting the sun and Earth.
Full moons always rise around sunset and set around sunrise, and the position of the ecliptic on winter nights causes February moons to climb very high in the night sky. In fact, the shadows generated in your backyard by the bright moonlight will match the shadows cast by the sun in early August. This full moon will occur only 7 hours after perigee, the point in the moon’s orbit when it is closest to Earth, making it the largest and brightest full moon, or supermoon, of 2019 and will generate high tides globally.
Tumblr media
(Above: The February 19 Full Wolf Moon will occur hours after perigee, making it the largest and brightest supermoon of 2019. That said, a supermoon does not appear look much different from an average moon, or even its counterpart - the apogee moon shown at left.)
From Wednesday onward, the moon will wane and rise later as it crosses through the constellations of Leo and then Virgo (the Maiden). In the pre-dawn southeastern sky next Sunday, the moon will appear a palm’s width above the medium-bright star Zubelelgenubi in Libra (the Scales).
Tumblr media
(Above: This week is the best chance for 2019 for Northern Hemisphere observers to see elusive Mercury. Look for the planet low in the western sky after sunset, as shown here at 6:40 pm local time on February 23.)
This week offers your best and easiest opportunity to see Mercury during 2019, if you live in the Northern Hemisphere. The elusive inner planet will speedily climb higher and away from the sun all week, allowing it to set while the sky is darker. Find a viewing spot where the western horizon is low and free of foreground obstructions. Once the sun has fully set, sweep the sky with binoculars - or your own sharp eyeballs – looking for a medium bright, unmoving point of light. Early this week, the best time to look will be between 6 and 6:30 pm local time. By next Sunday, the viewing window will close half an hour later, under a much darker sky.
Once you’ve found Mercury, try looking at it through a small telescope. It will show a waning gibbous (more than half illuminated) phase, and that phase will rapidly wane all week!
Tumblr media
(Above: As shown here at 8 pm local time, Mars is the only bright planet in the evening sky nowadays. The red planet has been slowly pulling away from much dimmer, green-blue Uranus.)
The other easy evening planet to see this week is reddish Mars. After dusk, Mars will appear as a medium-bright, reddish pinpoint of light in the lower third of the western sky among the dim stars of Aries (the Ram). The Red Planet will set at about 11:20 pm local time. Mars is slowly shrinking in size and brightness as we increase our distance from it little-by-little.
Last week, Mars passed near Uranus, and it is still positioned only a few finger widths above that far dimmer, blue-green planet. During this week, Mars will move farther away from Uranus. In the meantime, the distant ice giant planet will remain positioned about 1.6 finger widths above the modestly bright star named Torcular (or Omega Piscium). This week, Uranus will set at around 10:45 pm local time.
Tumblr media
(Above: The southeastern pre-dawn sky features the three bright planets Jupiter, Venus, and Saturn. On Monday morning, Venus will descend to pass only a finger’s width above much dimmer Saturn, as shown here at 6 am local time.)
The sight of three bright planets this week, two of them kissing, might entice you to rise early and peek outside at dawn. All week long, bright Jupiter will be visible in the southeastern sky between 3:30 am local time and dawn. A pretty celestial sight occurs on the pre-dawn mornings surrounding Monday, February 18, when observers will see rapidly descending Venus pass very close to distant Saturn. At closest approach on Monday morning, extremely bright, white Venus will be located 1 finger’s width above dimmer, yellowish Saturn – placing both planets within the field of view of a backyard telescope. At that time, Venus will exhibit a partially illuminated disk. For best results, look for the duo low in the southeastern sky between 6 and 7 am local time.
Evening Zodiacal Light
For about half an hour after dusk during the two week period preceding the new moon on March 6, look west-southwest for a broad wedge of faint light rising from the horizon and centered on the ecliptic. This is the zodiacal light - reflected sunlight from interplanetary particles of matter concentrated in the plane of the solar system. The glow will be centred on the horizon directly below Mars. Try to observe from a location without light pollution, and don't confuse the zodiacal light with the brighter Milky Way to the northwest.
Tumblr media
(Above: The Zodiacal Light is sunlight scattered off of interplanetary dust in the plane of the solar system. In moonless periods when the spring ecliptic is near vertical, the light can be seen from dark sky sites for a short time after dusk, as shown here at 7:30 pm local time.)
Keep looking up, and enjoy the sky when you do. I love questions and requests - so, send me some!

James: *wrapping his arms around Regulus* its freezing; you'll get a cold if you stay out here, sweetheart
Reg: colds are viral illnesses. You're thinking of a chill
James: why do I love you again?
Reg: I stop you being such an idiot, mon amour
James: ah, must be it. Come on in, before you get a chill

watching stars collide (chap. 1/11)

characters/ships: alex danvers, maggie sawyer, alex/maggie, kara danvers, lucy lane, winn, jimmy
summer was painted on our skin and those secrets hidden in our childish lips they would die for a kiss
- Weeping Willow, The Hush Sound
_______________________________________________
First day of camp, first hour really, and she had already made an enemy.
“It’s not your fault if the beds are assigned, you know?”
Alex looked in the direction of the voice and saw a Latina girl sitting on the bed besides hers, chestnut hair framing her face and dimples on her cheek. She smiled and looked behind her shoulder towards the girl still scowling, moving to the bed with her name on it by the end of the room. “Well, she certainly think it is.”
“Don’t mind her, she’ll be over it by diner time. I’m Maggie.”
“Alex.” She shook the hand the girl, Maggie, was offering. “First time here?”
“Yep. It was summer camp or Blue Springs, Nebraska; where there’s nothing to do for three months… Or, ever.” She laughed and Alex had never thought that laughing could sound pretty until now.
“Same, except for the Blue Springs part.” When Maggie just kept looking at her she continued, feeling a little lost, “I’m from Midvale.”
The girl laughed again, her dimples on full display now, “Yikes. That’s not much better.”
Alex smiled and she could feel her cheeks turn a little pink, “It really isn’t...”
“Do you want to go outside, see the camp? I bet there’s a lake here, somewhere.”
Maggie was already up from her bed, looking towards the door, ready to experience everything the next ten weeks had to offer. “Sure, let’s go.”
Maybe camp wouldn’t be so bad after all.
**
They got there pretty early and people would be arriving throughout the day, there was nothing on the agenda besides checking in and finding your room, so they were free to roam around. They found the lake and it was a sunny day, still not at its hottest, but warm enough to deep your toes in the water.
“I hate the cold. Even the summer in Nebraska is cold.”
“From what you told me so far, it sounds like you just hate Nebraska.”
Maggie gave her a crooked smile, “You got me there.”
Sitting side by side on the little wooden dock they couldn’t see each others faces so well, but conversation came without effort and for a first day it was actually pretty good. Alex wasn’t one to make friends easily, but she found it easy to talk to Maggie; to ask her about Blue Springs and to talk about Midvale.
“Why do you hate it there? It doesn’t sound all that bad…”
“Have you ever felt out of place without really knowing why?”
Alex thought for a few seconds before answering and looked at Maggie, “Yeah, a little.”
Maggie’s eyes were trained on the horizon, but when she glanced at Alex they could see understanding in each other, “That’s why.”
**
Later that night both of them slipped from their beds and went outside. Alex had mentioned looking at the starts from her backyard and Maggie had never really stopped to appreciate them before.
They found a pathway a few yards from the lodging and when they got to a clearing Alex told her to lie down, it was easier to see and experience all of it when all you could see was the sky.
“You’re gonna have to help me out here. What am I seeing?”
“Okay,” Alex got a little closer to her and pointed towards the sky, right above their heads, “do you see those three very bright stars?” Alex mostly sensed Maggie nodding than actually see it, “That’s Orion’s Belt.”
“Oh, I can see them!” She never thought she’d be excited about looking at stars.
“Together with these others stars, they form Orion, the Hunter.”
Alex pointed at the other stars but Maggie couldn’t keep up, “Now you lost me.” She got closer so she could take Maggie’s hand and point with both their fingers towards the stars she wanted her to see.
“Here,” She found the stars and pointed at them while holding Maggie’s hand,  “Can you see it?”
“That’s so cool.” Alex laughed and lowered their hands but, for some weird reason, didn’t let go. “What else do you know?”
“Well, right there, with the really bright star, following Orion, is Canis Major.”
“Show me.” Alex repeated the motion of guiding Maggie’s hand towards the stars, one by one, “What’s the name of that star?”
“The bright one? Sirius. Right now that’s the brightest star in the sky, but before that, the brightest star was Adhara,” She lifted their hands and found the star she was talking about, “before, it was even brighter than Sirius, no other star has ever been as bright as Adhara was.”
Maggie was lost trying to divide her gaze between the stars and Alex’s face as she talked about it, “That sounds sad, Alex.”
“I don’t think so… It’s like, she was the most amazing star and, even if she lost her place as the brightest in the sky, she’s still there… And she knows no other star will ever take her place, not like when she was at her peak.”
“You do realize you referred to the star as a girl, right?” She whispered looking to the girl next to her.
“Yeah, well, I’m a sap.” Alex didn’t dare to look at Maggie, but she squeezed the hand she was holding and still didn’t let go.
**
During the next couple of days they were bombarded with activities.
Games, quests, meals, a whole range of situations, both individual and in groups. They tried to stick together as much as possible, they were both sixteen so they had all the same tutors and counselors.
Everything that seemed extreme they’d sign up for, be it in the water or on dry land, but the one both of them fell in love with was riflery. It soon became a competition with them, making bets on who’d get closer to the center target before the other.
Maggie knew this was a good opportunity to get in touch with people from all over the country, that’s what she’d told her dad in order to let her go, but every time she’d get a free moment she was always with Alex. Not that the girl seemed to mind, it appeared they were always searching for each other.
It was good to have a friend, someone who understood her sense of humor and didn’t mind the silence sometimes. It was comfortable. She tried to think of any other time she was this at ease with someone and was at a lost.
**
They arrived on a Sunday and by Thursday their nightly ritual to go look at the stars was settled.
The girls would lie on the ground, close, and Alex would show Maggie all the constellations she knew and all the stories she could remember. They’d talk about other things too, like school and Alex’s sister or how Maggie’s grandmother wouldn’t stop harassing her so she’d pierce her ears.
“I’d have done it by now, just to get her off my back.”
“It’s the principle of the thing, Danvers.” No one called her by her last name but when Maggie said it, she decided she liked it.
“Well, it seems more like stubbornness to me.”
“I am not stubborn.”
“Which is exactly what a stubborn person would say.”
“You don’t even know my grandma and you’re taking her side?”
“I didn’t know there were sides to take.”
“I can’t believe you. And here I was, willing to learn about your stars and you’re siding with my grandma about something so stupid like me piercing my ears. From all the summer camps in all the world...”
“Oh please, you say that like it’s some big treason on my part, but you can’t find any of the stars I showed you so far without my help.”
There was a beat and Maggie laughed. “I swear to God, it seems like they’re changing places every day!”
“They’re stars, Sawyer, they’re out there and Earth is moving every second, of course they’re changing places. But the principle, as you’re so fond of, is the same.”
“Okay then, it’s a matter of honor now. Tell me which star do you want me to find. I’ll show it to you.”
“Really?”
“Yes, really.”
“Okay, find Adhara.”
Maggie looked up and mentally cursed herself. She had no idea how to find the star Alex wanted. She heard the girl giggling after a few seconds and signed. “You have no idea where it is, do you?”
“It’s not that I don’t know where it is… It’s more like, it isn’t where it should be. I swear I could find it yesterday.”
Alex took Maggie’s hand and pointed towards Sirius in the sky explaining how it was easier to find the other stars when you had one to focus on, to guide you. She traced the constellation with their fingers, naming all the stars she knew until she got to the one she wanted.
“I like it when you show it to me,” She whispered, not letting go of Alex’s hand, “I don’t know, it sounds smarter coming from you.”
“I like showing them to you,” Alex said in a very small voice, Maggie having to strain her ears to listen, “I never knew someone who were willing to listen to me talking about them, besides my dad and Kara, I mean.”
“Well, now you do.”
**
They had Sundays free, so Saturday night became the unofficial luau/bonfire/get to know everyone a little better night.
It was the first night and everyone was a little shy but they made a nice bonfire and some boys sneaked some marshmallows (from where, the girls had no idea), and two acoustic guitars (from the older counselors).
Maggie played a little bit of guitar, barely enough to get by, just three or four songs that she actually knew without having to look for the music sheet. And it turns out that Alex could sing. Really well. She would have to remind herself later to make her sing more. They stayed with the whole group for almost three hours, singing and telling jokes and eating candy. Everyone seemed really nice, the boys were polite and the girls were friendly.
Some time after eleven people started to get sleepy and go to bed, it had been a full day of activities and they needed the rest but Alex was energized. It was still not warm enough to go swimming at night, but the moon was beautiful and the water was calling her name.
“What to go to the lake?”
“Sure.”
They walk towards the dock and sit side by side, just like that first day, wetting their feet and enjoying the silence.
When Alex speaks, it’s very soft, so not to disturb the night and the calmness of the lake, “You know, I’ve never been very comfortable with being silent with other people… Just sitting with someone and not say anything,” when Maggie turns to look at her there’s no other word to describe her but serene, “my sister has the need to fill every moment with words.”
Maggie laughs because she knows exactly what she’s talking about, “My dad is the same way.”
“But with you it feels… nice. Like it’s okay to marvel at the world and be speechless.”
They were silent again and Maggie had the urge to take Alex’s hand in hers, like she needed the connection to make sure this moment was real, they were real. She had already lost so much, she knew how easily things could disappear.
She didn’t want for Alex to disappear, for her to become a mirage in the distance.
But before she could do anything, the other girl grabbed her hand, tightly, interlocking their fingers but not looking at Maggie.
“I just-”
“I know.”
There was no other way to describe it but a pull. Like the Moon’s magnetic pull towards the Earth, how its place in the sky changes the tides and affect the crops.
Maggie didn’t know who moved first and Alex couldn’t remember bringing her hand to the other girl’s face, but when their lips touched it was like wildfire and suddenly they were both ablaze.

Broken Promises
Tumblr media
A starry night, bright lights in heaven's black, stretched until the sea met the sky. Underneath the brightest star sat a blonde woman on a comfortable rocking chair. Her refinement making her look much younger than her actual age. Her shoulder-length golden hair rested on her shoulder while her mismatched yet dazzling green and blue eyes roamed the sky. It was quite a routine for her to sit under the stars, usually with a cup of fire whiskey or a good novel but today it seemed as if the stars kept calling to her. Despite her full attention on the velvety sky, she was aware of her husband sitting down next to her. "Melania," Came Arcturus's soft voice. "It's quite late my love," his hand reached out to hold the soft palm of his wife. Melanie turned to meet her husband's grey eyes with an amused smile on her face. "It depends on your point of view. Somewhere in the world, the sun just came up," she turned back to look up at the sky, not seeing her husband's adoring look.
Arcturus too decided to entertain his wife and himself as he turned back to look at the sky. "When I see stars. I see tradition. The honor of our family. What do you see?" he curiously asked, wanting to know Melania's point of view. "I see fate. My mother used to say that while you are alive, the stars sing your destiny but once you die, you sing back at those you love," she answered her eyes becoming silvery as she thought of her deceased mother. "There will be another star," Melania broke the comfortable silence between them. The raven-haired man beside her sat up straight as his interest peaked. "But the stars won't know her name," she frowned making her husband squeezed her hand. "Is that a bad thing?" he asked in concern.
After many years of marriage, Arcturus had learned that even the sanest woman like Melania can say odd things sometimes. And just like her intelligent claims, her odd ones should not be underestimated as well. "It depends on her my love," The blonde female sighed. "She will write her own destiny. She will sing to the stars. Now her future relies on the choices she will make," Her eyes twinkled with something Arcturus couldn't quite put his finger on but he was sure, if Melanie had any say, the girl will have a good and secure feature. She stood up, her green velvet silk grown hugging her body. "We should go inside now," she smiled. "I promised Andromeda I'll tell her a story,"
Years passed yet Arcturus nor Melania forgot their conversation neither did they speak about it anew. Arcturus grip on his cane tightened as he watched his only son; Orion in pure amusement while he paced while his wife was giving labor, to the heir of the Noble and most ancient house of Black. "You sure you don't need to use the washroom little brother," Lucretia Prewett grinned teasingly at her younger brother while she held her six months year old twins, Fabian and Gideon on her lap. Orion paused in his steps only to give his sister the fakest smile. "Funny coming out of you sister. Didn't you pop off three of your own," He crossed his arms. "Exactly. You're not the one popping out the kids. Your wife is. So get your ass down," she sang. "Lucretia!" Irma gasped at her niece's foul language while Alphard was trying to control his laughter. "Apologies Aunt Irma," She muttered while her brother and cousins knew that she was not sorry at all.
To ease his worries, Orion picked up Fabian and started entertaining his nephew, earning a distraction for himself. Almost half an hour later, a sweating Melania Black came outside. Being a principled Healer had its perks, such as delivering all your grand children. Everyone stood up at the sight of their mother, aunt, wife, sister-in-law, respectively. Orion immediately ran inside the delivering room. Walburga's cheeks were sanguine, her dark curls were all over the places as she took deep breaths, trying to calm herself after the painful experience. "Meet your son and daughter," she managed to smile tiredly.
Orion walked forward to the crib, being careful not to make any sound. Two kids lyed down together. His son was holding his twin's finger as tightly as possible. This made him chuckle. All sounds of his family were tuned out as he watched his children sleeping peacefully. "There beautiful," Irma smiled brightly as she looked at them. "Of course they are. They are my nephew and niece after all," Alphard grinned cheekily. Walburga scowled at her brother and desperately wanted to throw a vase or a piano at him. Melania handed the girl to Pollux while the boy to Arcturus. "Have you decided what to name them?" Cygnus asked while watching his father cradling his niece. "Sirius Orion Black," Orion decided after a few moments. "And the girl?" Druella raised her brows at him.
All eyes turned to Walburga since Orion had already named their son. "Nova," Walburga muttered. This was her first and possibly last female child. Her name had to be perfect. "Nova Adhara Black," she destined. Everyone smiled at the beautiful name chosen for the baby girl. Walburga was right, Nova was the only female. Two years later, Walburga and Orion had son; Regulus and they decided not to have more children. Slowly as time passed, Walburga and Orion got bitter and bitter. Despite having three children, she didn't have a maternal bone in them. To them children were their duty and no one said anything about affection.
Regulus was the perfect son. Never objecting to anything his parents say. Sirius on the other hand had gotten rebellious. He took pleasure in annoying his family and didn't care about the consequences, one of the reasons he wasn't fond of Regulus. Nova was their golden thread. She and Sirius were best of friends, both of them had an unbreakable bond. She used to keep his feet on the ground and he was the reason she allowed herself to feel free and dream. Most of the teams, she was covering up for her twin or taking the blame on herself. Despite being only two years apart, she was a maternal figure to young Reggie.
The youngest Black adored her. She was his protector. Unlike Sirius, she never made fun of him for not standing up to their mother, she understood not everyone can be brave. Diverse from Walburga and other perfectionists in the family, Regulus never hesitated to ask her help. She said and he quotes: "Perfection is found in accepting your imperfection,"
The Best days, the three Black siblings have are when Walburga and Orion are not at home and Alphard Black is babysitting. Like right now, Alphard was passed out on the sofa from the excessive amount of fire whiskey the trio had managed to make him drink while the rain floats in gentle waves, as if gravity is a soft music from the Earth, a sweet beckoning serenade. Nova giggled as she splashed down on the puddles while her brothers danced. She stopped doing but she was and looked at her brothers with a soft smile on her face. They looked so happy. Sirius and Regulus had joined their hands as they played merry-go-round. "Promise me this is forever," Nova called out their attention. "Promise me that all three of us, we'll always be together. No matter what happens. We'll always have each others back," she took a deep breath. "I promise," Regulus and Sirius agreed together.
Grins broke out on their faces before continuing to dance in the rain. For the next two years, The trio fulfilled their promise. They always had each other's back until the time came where Sirius and Nova had gotten their Hogwarts letter. After a long lecture from their parents, the two finally boarded the train. Noticing his sister's anxiousness he turned to look at her with an adoring smile. He kissed his middle and index finger and put them forward, Nova doing the same before she linked the four fingers together. "I'll be here for you," Sirius assured. "Forever," Nova nodded with a smile before they continued to find a compartment.
Finding an empty compartment, both of them sat there. Only several minutes later, the compartment door opened to show a boy with messy hair and hazel eyes, alongside him was a girl with medium brown hair and light eyes. "Hello!" The boy grinned. "Don't mind if me any my sister sit here?" he asked. Sirius shook his head with a smirk forming on his own lips. "Of course not," he pointed to empty seats as Nova gave them a shy smile. "I'm James Potter and this is my little sister Jane," he teased. Jane rolled her eyes at him. "Just 9 months," she groaned. "Still younger," James quipped making Sirius laugh.
Nova was feeling a little uncomfortable. Sirius was busy engrossed in a conversation with them. She might be acting a bit unrealistic but it was supposed to him and her(and Reggie). "What house will you be in?" James asked the quite girl. "Gryffindor," Sirius answered for her. "Maybe," Nova frowned trying to get rid of the bubbling feeling in her stomach. Nova took out her novel and kept reading it for hours while Sirius seemed to have found best friends in the Potters. He didn't even look back for her while they were on the boats. Thank God, Narcissa found her. She and Lucius were more than happy to sneak her into their carriages.
Narcissa and Nova parted but not before the elder pressed a kiss on her younger cousin's cheek. Sirius finally noticed his twin's absence. He turned around and gave her a wink, which she returned with a small smile. "Black, Sirius," Minerva called out. Sirius strutted to the stool. "Gryffindor!" the hat roared. While Sirius proudly sat with the lions, Nova shared a look with Andromeda and Narcissa. "Black, Nova," The Brunette felt her throat getting dry as she walked to the stool. There was no excitement on her face. All her life she thought that she is very similar to Sirius but sitting on the stool with the hat on her head made her realize she's not. Sirius is brave, brave enough to feel the wraith of Walburga and Orion, while Nova wasn't. "Slytherin please Slytherin," she muttered. "Are you sure? Gryffindor and Ravenclaw would do good for you," The hat wondered but Nova didn't budge.
"Slytherin!" The hat shouted as the Slytherins roared with cheers. Nova released a sigh, she didn't know she was holding and sat next to Narcissa who pulled her into a hug. The younger Black turned to the Gryffindor table to see Sirius's eyes on her. It was supposed to be them three. He had promised forever so the difference in dorm rooms shouldn't matter. She sent him a smile but he looked away. "I thought she was normal," Jane muttered out loud. "Whatever," Sirius frowned. "I don't need her," he spat. Guess Forever isn't always.

The Little Things
Title: Little Star
Summary: Just a quiet, happy moment with his new family and a bit with the old.
Pairing: Sirius Oswald/Celeste Morreaux, Harr Silver/Zeta Oswald
Word Count: 1440
Warning: None
A/N: This was written solely because I wanted fluff and the best way for me to do that is to write babies. This is set in AU I’m picking away at with @kashimalin where certain events of the past didn’t happen so Cradle’s recent history unfolded very differently for a trio of friends. Namely, one doesn’t become an outlaw and the other continues running his family’s flower shop. This is set so far down the road for this AU, but...I’m having baby feels so I need to post it. The only other major thing to point out is that Celeste is actually from Cradle instead of London in this. For reasons.
Pausing in the doorway, Sirius felt his heart begin to pound as he looked at the scene in front of him. Celeste was tucked into the corner of a couch in the sitting room, blankets wrapped around her to keep her warm. Although, between the fireplace and the magic crystals in the room, there was no possible way she would catch a chill. Neither of them would.
She was completely absorbed in the bundle in her arms and he didn’t blame her. Their little star had joined them two days ago and both of them were smitten. He was glad his family had filled the house to help because neither of them were interested in more than their daughter right now.
His shoulders slumped even as he smiled as Celeste cooed at her, the sound full of love and happiness. But the soft noises being made back to her melted his heart.
Crossing the room, he carefully sat beside her and returned her smile. “Your juice,” he said, holding the glass out to her.
She hummed her thanks, shifting Adhara to one arm. “What are they doing?” she asked, sipping at it.
“Making dinner. Mother seems to think they’ll come tonight.”
“The meetings are important. Harr can’t just leave them no matter what Loki thinks.”
The young wizard had been ecstatic when they’d told him before he’d immediately decided he had to get Harr. They hadn’t been able to stop him before he’d disappeared in a flash of bright light. “You’re forgetting that Zeta went with him and if anyone could convince him to leave the summit, it’s her.”
            “Sirius, the summit is important!”
So was the first Oswald grandchild. Speaking of, he leaned over a little to see his daughter. Big eyes found him and he smiled at the sight of her. “Hello, little lady,” he murmured, reaching out to stroke a chubby cheek.
He couldn’t stop his grin as she pursed her lips, pushing her tongue between them for a moment. Her little arms waved before falling back to her blanket.
“If you’re going to rile her up, you can hold her.”
“Gladly,” he said, carefully scooping Adhara up. “Come here, little lady.”
Celeste gave him a look as he got the baby settled in his arms. “You did that on purpose,” she accused.
            “I did.”
She laughed, setting aside her glass and leaning against his shoulder.
He turned to kiss the top of her head. “I love you, my lady,” he said softly.
            “I love you, too, Sirius.”
Her weight leaned into him more and he didn’t need to look to know she was falling asleep. He stayed as still as he could, letting her catch what sleep she could.
Focusing back on Adhara, Sirius watched her legs curl up before stretching out. The hesitation he’d felt at holding her after she was born had passed, leaving only wonder and love behind. He’d grown so used to holding her and, if it wasn’t Celeste, he’d been slow to give her to anyone else. Even his family.
A helpless smile crossed his face as Adhara yawned, the action huge before she smacked her lips. “You can sleep too, little lady,” he murmured. “I’ll keep you both safe.”
She blinked up at him and he watched as she slowly fell asleep as well.
Pride filled him at that. Both of his ladies trusted him enough to sleep with him like this. He let his cheek rest on top of Celeste’s hair and closed his eyes. He’d thought he’d known happiness before, marrying Celeste and running the business. But having Adhara in their lives now was a blessing he never could have fully imagined. And it had only been two days.
Noises from outside the room had him opening his eyes. A glance at the clock showed that twenty minutes had passed and he frowned. Had he somehow dozed off? He knew he hadn’t slept much the last few nights but he’d gone longer and not fallen asleep before. Straining to hear what was going on, he nearly laughed when he recognized the voices. “Good job, Loki,” he murmured.
After a few moments, the two people he was expecting came into the room, Zeta quicker than Harr.
“Shh,” he said as she came up to the couch.
“Oh, Sirius, look at her,” she breathed. “She’s perfect!”
Harr came up behind her, looking over her shoulder with a faint smile on his face. “Loki didn’t tell us her name,” he said quietly.
            “Adhara,” Sirius said.
“After great-grandma?” Zeta said, looking up at him for a moment before back at the baby. “That’s lovely.”
Sirius watched as she gently stroked the dark hair on Adhara’s head, cooing softly at her when she squirmed.
“She looks good on you, brother,” Zeta said. “When are you having more?”
He snorted and Celeste stirred beside him. He kissed the top of her head as she pushed away from him, sighing deeply.
            “Sorry, Celeste,” Zeta murmured.
“Oh!” she said in surprise. “Oh, you two! You’re not supposed to be here!”
Harr laughed under his breath. “The summit happens every year. You don’t have a baby every year.”
“They could.”
“No,” Sirius and Celeste said together. He didn’t care if he did want more children with her; he was waiting a good long while before he put either of them through labour again.
She pouted at them before smiling. “I suppose I can forgive you. Since she’s so cute.”
He was expecting it but he was still slow to pass Adhara to her when she held out her hands. “Be careful.” He wasn’t sure if it was a warning or a plea.
“I will,” she promised, all teasing gone as she cradled the baby to her chest. “She’s my first niece after all and so very precious.”
Sirius glanced at Celeste when she moved, watching as she picked up her juice again and making sure she wasn’t pushing herself too much. When she settled back against him, he wrapped his arm around her and let her cuddle into him.
“You two are so cute,” Zeta said, pulling their gazes back to her. “I don’t know why you waited so long to get together.”
He rolled his eyes and didn’t answer her.
“And you’ve made the cutest little baby,” she continued. “Look at her, Harr. Don’t we have the cutest niece?”
He smiled faintly at her, nodding, before his eyes widened when she held the baby out. “Ah, no, I’m fine, Zeta. You hold her.”
“Harr, she’s your niece too. You have to hold her before people not from the family start to.” Zeta looked at him. “Other people haven’t held her yet have they?”
“No. She’s only two days old, Zeta. We aren’t in the mood for visitors.” Although that was a lie. Lancelot has sent a letter saying he would be coming tomorrow to see them but he was practically family so he didn’t count.
“Good. Hold out your hands.”
Sirius saw the same panic he’d felt when Celeste had passed Adhara to him the first time cross Harr’s face. He started to say something when Celeste squeezed his leg. She was smiling at him as his gaze dropped and shook her head once.
Looking back up, he watched Zeta not take no for an answer and instruct Harr how to hold his hands. She was careful as she passed Adhara over, checking he had her before pulling away.
Harr stared down at her, holding her close to his chest. “She’s very small.”
“Actually she’s a little bigger than average,” Celeste said.
“...She feels very small.”
Both women laughed but Sirius agreed. Neither him nor Harr were small men and Adhara felt positively tiny in his hands. She tucked right into the length of his forearm like she was meant to be there, but that was still so little space to take up.
Harr stiffened when a burble left Adhara before a smile crossed his face as he watched her go back to sleep. They could just see one arm moving above the blanket before her hand smacked into his chest. Her fist closed on the material and Harr pulled her even closer to him.
Watching as Zeta stepped in so she could see as well, Sirius bent slightly to murmur in Celeste’s ear, “How long before she tells us she’s pregnant?”
Blue eyes were dancing as he pulled away. “Not long at all.”
Sirius grinned and stole a kiss from her while he could. It wouldn’t be long at all if Zeta has convinced Harr to return from an overseas summit just to see her.

One of the most effective things you can do is act completely calmly and rationally in an argument, perhaps being a little condescending the further they take it. There is nothing a provocative persons hates more than someone not only not taking the bait but also psychoanalysing why they're acting how they are
