man. I’m so ready for those One Piece women with different and interesting character designs people told me were coming to start showing up, because this business with Alvida* is really not my favorite choice this show has made
*she hasn’t said her name yet, but it’s so obvious that this mysterious woman with Alvida’s aesthetic and fashion sense and weapon is Alvida. Why is she suddenly slim and conventionally beautiful when she used to be like eight feet tall and built like a brick house (and actually looked like she could swing that spiked mace with some power)? I guess I’ll find out eventually, but the “reveal” is probably going to be some big spit-take affair where everyone’s eyes bug out of their heads and I’m not looking forward to it, so I left off on Sanji’s cooking contest episode and I’ll start watching again… eventually.
Edit ok I started watching again while I’m drawing on the couch and everyone kinda breezed past the reveal? I’m surprised; I was ready for that to go so much worse.

remember that post you made back when the valentines comic got released about what you think DC might do with Ed's implicit canon bisexuality? On a scale of 1-10 how out of left field is the Clock King thing in that context?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love that you asked me this because I was JUST frantically discussing that with @badnewbie. I would never in a million years have guessed that DC's first acknowledgement of Riddler being bisexual since Valentine's Day would be five months later in The Harley Quinn Show trailer, but in retrospect it makes so much sense that I don't think it could have been anything else. Honestly, as a named reoccurring supervillain character, Clock King is a million times better than I ever thought Edward would get for a male love interest (I assumed he'd be getting one-off unnamed civilians at best for the next quarter century). Disclaimer, however, that this IS the show that hatecrimed me by forcing me to watch Poison Ivy date Kite Man, so I'm sure however they handle it will be physically painful to watch.

Okay but what if this is a cosmic Monkey’s Paw situation Kipperlilly is fucking MISERABLE right now. Like, she was a shithead teen that was jealous of Riz for having a dead dad and a ‘tragic backstory’ because it ‘made him a better adventurer and was an unfair advantage’, and then on her first real mission her entire party got killed and coerced into serving an evil rage god, except for her very best friend who stayed dead. And she HATES IT. It’s like one of those old fairytales where a kid doesn’t do their chores and talked back to their parents, so their parents abandon them and the child gets eaten by a demon and somehow that’s ‘justice’, so you better behave kid! I mean, Ankarna IS a corrupted goddess of justice. It just seems funny to me that she’s LIVING her tragic backstory RIGHT NOW after complaining to Jawbone for two years about not having one. And the worst part is, from a CERTAIN PERSPECTIVE, she was a little bit right. Kipperlilly DID only start doing actual adventuring and rouge shit after she was forced to by an evil god who killed her and is currently holding her friend hostage. Like, it didn’t have to be that way. She could have done that stuff at any time. But her current ‘tragic situation’ is what’s currently FORCING her to get off her ass and adventure. Just the most fucked up, disproportional, unfair approximation of cosmic ‘justice’ imaginable.
Anyway this is a theory??? I guess. Just a direction I hope the story goes in/acknowledges. Because it would be funny

Of Yūko's customers, which ones you find most memorable?
Tumblr media
Most memorable customers, you say?
I hope you don't mind me using this as an excuse to make an arbitrary list by way of answer. (Arbitrary lists, my beloved...)
Yuuko's Customers In Order Of How Well I Remember Them
(Though I will exclude all the bigger characters for fairness. So, Syaoran, Watanuki, Lava Lamp, Fai, Kurogane, Doumeki, Himawari, Seishirou, Ashura, Tomoyo, etc, etc. Regular xxxHolic customers only!)
10. Birdcage Customer
Tumblr media
What was this about? Was he even a customer? We just don't know!
But the thing most memorable about this whole situation is the most pressing question: WHY DO YOU HAVE EVIL WOLVERINE'S SYMBOL ALL OVER YOUR HOME? It's even on his front sign!
WHO ARE YOU?????
9. The Liar
Tumblr media
Mostly at the bottom because I can't resist the irony. She's the first big customer we see - but what do we really know about her? Absolutely nothing, because she lied every step of the way!
What can we really remember about someone who never actually told us anything about herself?
Though I guess you could say her ending causes quite an impact.
8. Monkey's Paw Customer
Tumblr media
Did I forget this had happened? Perhaps!
She's one of those cases where the cause and effect are so clear that the rest of the cast might as well not even be there - and I think most of her story IS told through scenes entirely from her perspective.
I think the most memorable thing about her is the Sheer Audacity of hunting down a monkey's paw and being convinced that, actually, she already knows what it does so it can't possibly go wrong. Love that for her. Would kill for this confidence.
(Not literally - but she kind of did that also)
7. Ame Warashi
Tumblr media
Her impeccable style. Her winning charm. She's an icon.
I had just completely forgotten that she was also a customer at one point.
She makes up for it for being absolutely great in every scene she was in, but what are you going to do in a list based purely on how well I remember the customer part? Woops! My bad!
6. Karasu Tengu
Tumblr media
They get huge points for this being a Central Event in the narrative, but also I completely forgot they were in this as customers. The entire plot scenario? Incredible! Character defining! Et cetera!
The actual Karasu Tengu themselves? Woops! I forgot they were there. My fault though!
5. The Computer Addict
Tumblr media
I love this one. She's so ahead of the curve that she was addicted to the internet back when you had to be on the pc to use it. Honestly, relatable. I also went through a phase like this as a young teen, so the struggle was real.
Little did we all know that in the present day the accessibility of the internet would be so rampant that she literally wouldn't even need that pc to indulge her habits anymore. Oops!
But that aside Yuuko is peak during this arc and I love everything about it. Especially the fact that Yuuko just hangs out on message boards in her free time? Wonderful information. I can do so much with this.
4. Oops! All Ghosts
Tumblr media
Another incredible storyline. The twists are preserved by some sneaky panels from Watanuki's perspective and Yuuko's morally grey approach to the whole situation is wonderful. What if you wanted to get rid of the ghost in your home, only to find out that YOU were the ghost all along? It has the DISTRESS. It has the CONFLICT. It has the TRAGEDY. 10/10
3. Haunted Photo
Tumblr media
Another customer with Peak Audacity. Trying to wish away the consequences of your own actions? Committing something awful but being unable to actually look at the proof yourself? The ultimate wish being an anxiety inducing curse that is sure to fail? Love it.
It's also one of those juicy situations where the morality of the situation basically drives itself. The customer causes her own problems and can't actually be saved - and doesn't deserve it either.
And honestly I think CLAMP should get a lot of credit for having the haunting effects of a photograph slowly turning around in a purely static medium. They really pulled that off.
I still love the evil smile in the photograph the last time we see it. PURE memorable.
2. The Twin
Tumblr media
WE LOVE HER? WE LOVE HER.
Being consistently cut off and run down and overwritten and slowly clawing your way out of the situation through the sheer desire to be your own person?
And then the answer is a haircut?
It's another glimpse into the side of Yuuko that really does try cut people a good bargain. The wish could have been taken in any number of ways, but Yuuko went for the easiest and most affordable way that would genuinely help the customer actually fix her life on her own. She didn't specifically need supernatural help for this, but it was the route that presented itself, and it was the one that got her the help she needed when she needed it. Very hitsuzen, very relatable, very identifiable storyline that sticks with you.
Just like the final entry!
1. Kohane
Tumblr media
Listen do I even need to explain this one.
Kohane is like THE storyline. It's THE example of what it's all about. It's not entirely supernatural in nature but completely heart wrenching. It has Watanuki playing a central role in fixing the problem, setting up for his future (or at least, what I assume it will be). It ties xxxHolic to Tsubasa and hints at a secret tool that will help with someone later.
And it has Kohane! You can't go wrong.

i think the shen yuan as jiu's shizun thing would be particularly heartbreaking because the system could very easily hit hard with that "you wanted lore, didnt you? you wanted this. this is what you asked for." watch as everyone you vaguely dismissed as 'binghe's enemies' suffer endlessly to create a world you decided should be expanded on. and look at that little author crawl miserably through all kinds of abuse, isnt that what you wished on him? didnt you say he deserved it? nightmare.
(In relation to this post.)
Yes, to all of this.
Real monkey's paw situation. He got exactly what he wanted: a life of leisure where none of his choices could 'ruin' the plot, he could enjoy the bits of the world he cared about without ever being in any danger and then got front row seat to all the people he previously decided deserving of punishment (the hack author, Shen Qingqiu who abused Luo Binghe and Yue Qingyuan who enabled the abuse) get their comeuppance.
Except it hits different when he realizes that all that ill fortune is inflicted on people. People he now cares about, having watched their pain and suffering up close, people he doesn't want to hurt any more. There's a person behind Airplane's ridiculous nickname, a small, scared person now trapped in a horrible fate and a lifetime of terror because he wrote a stupid novel.
There's a history behind Yue Qingyuan and Shen Qingqiu, one of them paralyzed by guilt (if Shen Yuan mentioned that plant that one time then there would have been no delay. Even worse, if Yue Qi could trust the adults to look out for him then he would have not needed to go himself at all, there was a whole sect's worth of adults who could have gone and rescued Shen Jiu - and as much as Shen Yuan wants to blame the lack of trust on Yue Qingyuan, he knows none of his martial siblings would have cared to go even if he told them. Shen Yuan himself would not have bothered to go out of his way to check on some slave boy miles away who might be dead or alive, just because Yue Qi says he has the potential for cultivation) and the other baring his claws and teeth at the world because he's scared and the only way he knows how not to let his fear make him look weak is by making himself look angry and nasty and more dangerous than he is (and oh gods, he thought Shen Jiu's continued antics were funny. He thought Shen Jiu was just Like That, a little bit feral, and never realized the boy felt unsafe on his peak - what kind of shizun was he to never notice that something was this wrong?).
Both of them were let down by the system, slipping through the cracks and he was part of that system, it should have been his job to catch one or both of them and he was too busy with his stupid beasts and stupid plants that he didn't even think to look.
That's the worst of all. He wanted to be safe and uninvolved and he got exactly that: now he gets to reap what he sowed, watch as the neglect he was complicit in grows into pain and misery and death.
A lion hobbled by guilt. A wolf rabid from fear. An author with his neck in the noose.
Happy transmigration, Shen Yuan. This System hopes you enjoy your nightmare. Don't forget to leave a positive review! ˶ᵔ ᵕ ᵔ˶

Ok, but eventually, one of them is gonna get caught. While Mr. Sunshine is the most likely, I like to think it was Moonlight instead. For one, Wukong has been disguising himself amongst humans for centuries and is a master at shape-shifting... Macaque? Dead the past several centuries, in fact. Over a thousand years dead if we consider the fact he canonically died during the journey, and that canonically was during the Tang dynasty, approximately 1300 years ago. And like any ancient warrior demon from China's most legendary era... he immediately outs Wukong like a child who got his hand caught in the cookie jar. If he is going down, Wukong is being dragged with him!
Referencing.
Absolutely its Macaque that gets found out first. Because while he's a good actor... he's not patient at all. If he spends too much time as Mr Moonlight, he gets antsy.
Wukong is able to keep the act up far longer than people expect. He has that sort of self-control. He doesn't get "stage fright" as it were if he's transformed into something/someone else. The only times he breaks character in JTTW is when he laughs too hard (Camel Ridge), or when PIF tried kissing him while he was glamoured as DBK.
First person to notice that the pets weren't normal was Sandy. He knows cats, and Mr Moonlight isn't a real cat. He probably sits the dang cat down a calmly explains that while he's not sure why he's chosen this form, that he would appriciate that he come clean to his owners. Mr Moonlight looks away guiltily enough to confirm the boatman's suspiscions.
Mei has been working a theory with Pigsy for years that Mr Moonlight is a person cursed to be a cat ala Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch. Pigsy's caught the cat watching tv far too many times to be normal.
Tumblr media
Bai He is obsessed with witchy things and magical girl cartoons, so she thinks Mr Moonlight is her familiar and that his behaviors are normal for a "magic" cat.
It all comes to a head when MK gets the Staff... causing Mr Moonlight to exclaim in a man's voice; "THE HELL DID YOU GET THAT?!"
The restaurant goes silent.
Bai He stops brushing her cats fur in cofusion.
Macaque tries to salvage the situation; "Meow?"
But its far too late. Especially since MK has just discovered that the Demon Bull Family and the Monkey King's staff!!
Mr Moonlight then points a single paw at the bird on MK's shoulder;
Tumblr media
cat!Macaque, pointing at Mr Sunshine: "He's not a bird either." bird!Wukong: "Mac wtf?!" MK: "Mr Sunshine can talk too!?" Bai He, in denial, holding Mr Moonlight: "No, he's just a bird. They repeat stuff." Tang, terrified: "But the fact that your cat talks is ok!?" Bai He, matter-of-factly: "He's a black cat, so he's a witch." Tang: "I... I dunno how to refute that... I'm doing an exorcism." cat!Macaque: "Oh for-!" *transforms into his regular monkey self* MK & Tang: *Loud gasp!!* "MONKEY KING!!" bird!Wukong, offended: "Heeey!" *bounces down and turns into his true form* MK & Tang: "TWO MONKEY KINGS!?" Bai He: "But... my kitty..." Macaque: "Only some of the time, bug."
Needless to say the chaos increases from here. Pigsy whacks both monkeys on the head for the deception ("And the vet bills!").

People bringing up Dino Thunder and SPD as examples of seasons the brand could shift focus onto instead of MMPR in the comics are asking for a real monkey's paw situation because half the MMPR cast works at SPD now and do you really think they'd resist a Dino Thunder story along the lines of "Tommy's old teammates come to visit Reefside!!!!!!!"

Letters From Watson Liveblog - Oct. 8
The Six Napoleons, Part 1 of 3
Tumblr media
I like the evolution of Lestrade's relationship with the boys from being generally professional in the beginning to him just now hanging out some nights. And it's not all talk of crime, they make pleasant conversation too.
Tumblr media
The fact "Hooliganism" is capitalized makes it seem like an official term for identifying crimes. Probably alongside "Shenaniganery" and "Rapscallionship" as well.
Tumblr media
I enjoy it whenever Watson gets to shine a little, showing his medical expertise and such, and not be mere muscle nor stooge for whatever is going on.
Tumblr media
This line suggests it wasn't the mere sinking of the parsley that aroused Holmes' notice, but the specific depth that the parsley sunk, which makes me way more intrigued as to what the case was about.
Tumblr media
I don't remember the significance of this photograph, whether it represents the murderer or some other character. Though I will say the fact the guy is described twice like an ape is odd and hopefully there's nothing more to that.
Tumblr media
For what I'm sure is a minor character who will never appear again, I'm glad to see Horace Harker get this characterization of a journalist who has these incredible things happen to him, but which also causes him so much stress he can't write about it. It's a real monkey's paw situation.
Part 1 - Part 2 - Part 3

what is the reasoning behind putting something that absolutely ignores mechanics in a system that's all about defined mechanics? if you want to play powered by the apocalypse go play pbta or whatever? stop trying shoehorn in shit that doesn't belong in D&D
I'm gonna do my best to take this question and answer it in good faith.
The system/subsystem I'm working on is to include a combination of things that are COMMON and beloved by many in fantasy, but ESPECIALLY Heroic Fantasy: someone pushing beyond their normal limits in order to accomplish a goal when everything else looks bleak. When a character says "fuck the consequences, I have no other choice," whether through desperation, anger, determination, etc. These are almost ALWAYS accompanied by long term consequences for that character.
In D&D games like mine that are just as much about the storytelling as the mechanical gameplay, it SUCKS when your dice have done nothing but betray you, for instance. There are plenty of REAL LIFE examples of stuff like this happening as well: real life people have found themselves capable of feats that they can't replicate afterward and had never done beforehand, because the situation was so desperate.
I'm not saying the system I'm working on is right for every table, not by a long shot. But there IS precedent for similar mechanics. The (slightly controversial) madness mechanic in 5e is an example.
My players, for instance, I know for a fact would avoid using this system unless things were truly desperate for their character. And I'm not saying this system even allows someone to say "I do this and it's perfectly successful." If it's a big ask, it might simply be impossible. If it's very difficult, they might be able to mostly succeed on their goal or they might have a monkey's paw version of a success.
The mechanic isn't intended for "I kill the BBEG." It's not for an extended, complex task. But if a character is standing next to someone they love and they can see someone pointing a crossbow at them, I would enjoy my players having the option to have a minor heroic moment of taking a shot for that person, or for a sorcerer to be able to push their powers beyond their normal limit when things are looking at their darkest, even knowing there will be some severe long term consequences.
My players LOVE D&D 5e. We love the mechanics in it. But we also love good narrative and storytelling, and as a DM I'm confident in my improvisation skills, I can handle it. My players also know if I have a blank slate of "Ellie can really fuck with my character if I do this" (in a good natured way) it's only to be used VERY sparsely.
In short: We WANT to play 5e D&D. We just want to add some narrative choice and flavoring that doesn't exist in the base rules.

WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU MEAN TIMELOOPS IN A3. MY ENTIRE VAGUE UNDERSTANDING OF A3 JUST GOT THROWN OUT THE WINDOW
HGJKGDSJKLDGSJKD
Okay so, A3 is like. emotional-drama slice-of-life kind of? It's set in what is pretty clearly The Real World, with a few differences like There's A Fake Country Called Zahra, and all the characters have realistic issues and problems.
AND THEN. AND FUCKING THEN. ACT/PART 4 OF THE MAIN STORY HAPPENS. MAGIC IS REAL.
Literal magic things that have happened in A3:
A couple characters can just. hold conversations with animals. Nobody else can, and nobody really questions why they're able to.
There's a loupe (which is like. a magnifying glass specifically used for jewelry and watches iirc) which if you look through it will show real and true internal thoughts 😭 Homare, low empathy king, gets his hands on it and uses it temporarily in order to solve some issues caused by his low empathy (said low empathy is treated respectfully! He's not vilified for it at all!!)
There's a magic room that traps people inside. Like you look for something and you go in the storage room and now you Can't Leave until you talk about your feelings. The main character gets trapped in here multiple times with different characters with problems. One of them had amnesia and may or may not have temporarily remembered everything due to being trapped behind the Unopening Door
Ghosts are ambiguously real. Sometimes characters will hear voices from dead people or have dreams where they seem to be alive. This is normal for them apparently 😭
TIME LOOPS. TWO OF THEM. THERE'S MULTIPLE TIME LOOPS. There's this doll called the "torment doll" which if you're having a giant fight with a close friend, it will LITERALLY TRAP YOU IN A TIME LOOP to make you make up!!! Tsumugi and Tasuku have issues and so get trapped in it. One of the aforementioned characters who can talk to animals is apparently IMMUNE TO TIME LOOPS and is in it with them, and is SO UPSET at them for it, but they eventually do work out their issues jjkgdjklgdgjklgd
Then later we get a bit of backstory to another character and it turns out HE was in a time loop too??? One of the antagonists (well he's a good guy now, but he WAS an antagonist) also had issues and got trapped in a loop by the torment doll!!! But instead of fixing things he broke the loop by LEAVING AND BREAKING OFF THEIR FRIENDSHIP while being incredibly gay about the whole thing
Also not as important as these only appear in side stories but: plushies are alive and can talk to people in their dreams. Also there's an object that can grant wishes in a kind of monkey's paw situation where it ends up Not Fun, but the next day it turns out to be just a dream.
So yeah!!! Magic is real in A3!!! A3 is so insane sometimes I love it so much
