A Clash of Kings - 62 SANSA VII (pages 778-785)
Cersei runs off to find Joffrey, leaving Sansa alone to calm their guests. The Hound says his goodbyes to Sansa, and dawn comes at long last after the Battle of the Blackwater.
-
"Bring him inside Maegor's now." "No!" Lancel was so angry he forgot to keep his voice down. heads turned toward them as he shouted, "We'll have the Mud Gate all over again. let him stay where he is. he's the king-" "He's my son." Cersei Lannister rose to her feet. "You claim to be a Lannister as well, cousin, prove it. Osfryd, why are you standing there? Now mean today." (...) "Cersei," Ser Lancel pleaded, "if we lose the castle, Joffrey will be killed in any case, you know that. Let him stay, I'll keep him by me, I swear-" "Get out of my way." Cersei slammed her open palm into his wound. Ser Lancel cried out in pain and almost fainted, as the queen swept from the room. (...) "Oh gods," an old woman wailed. "We're lost, the battle's lost, she's running.
I feel like D&D read this old woman's opinion and took it at face value. The sheer difference in the vibes between the show and book for this. When Cersei leaves in the show, she is very much running scared, prepared to kill herself and Tommen out of fear of what will happen to them, but book Cersei is going out to get her son to bring him to safety to hold out until the last scrap of ground is taken from beneath them.
She spared Sansa not so much as a glance. She's forgotten about me. Ser Ilyn will kill me and she won't even think about it. "Oh gods," an old woman wailed. "We're lost, the battle's lost, she's running. Several children were crying. They can smell fear. Sansa found herself alone on the dais. Should she stay here, or run after the queen and plead for her life? She never knew why she got to her feet, but she did. "Don't be afraid," she told them loudly. "The queen has raised the drawbridge. This is the safest place in the city. There's thick walls, the moat, the spikes..." ... Sansa raised her hands for quiet. "Joffrey's come back to the castle. he's not hurt. they're still fighting, that's all I know, they're fighting bravely. The queen will be back soon." The last was a lie, but she had to soothe them.
"She never knew why she got to her feet," because, Sansa Stark was a lady at three, and this is what a lady does? The character growth in this scene, *chef's kiss* lowkey, understated, very nice.
Sansa doesn't need to be doing this right now, but she is, she is stepping up and reaching out to help others even when she's also in such a shit situation. "She's not even doing anything/all that much" but she is. When you're scared and panicking, when people are scared and panicking in groups, a single voice of calm and order can mean everything.
Together, Sansa and the serving man got the wounded knight back on his feet. "Take him to Maester Frenken." Lancel was one of them, yet somehow she still could not bring herself to wish him dead. I am soft and weak and stupid, just as Joffrey says. I should be killing him, not helping him.
Compassion is not weakness.
The torches had begun to burn low, and one or two had flickered out. No one troubled to replace them. Cersei did not return. Ser Dontos climbed the dais while all eyes were on the other fool. "Go back to your bedchambers, sweet Jonquil," He whispered. "Lock yourself in, you'll be safer there. I'll come for you when the battle's done." Someone will come for me, Sansa thought, but will it be you, or will it be Ser Ilyn?
I love what GRRM is doing with the torch imagery, in the previous two Sansa chapters, he's mentioned the torches reflecting from the silver metal mirrors filling the room with light (and shadows) and now the torches are going out. It shows both a passage of time, (Since the start of the fight and since Cersei left) and the darkening of their situation, the illusion of safety being removed. Hope literally guttering out torch by torch.
It took all the strength she had in her to walk slowly from the Queen's Ballroom when she wanted so badly to run. When she reached the steps, she did run, up and around until she was breathless and dizzy.
I also like that when Sansa leaves the room, at the behest of Dontos, she's calm about it, like she's just popping out to check on things and she'll be back so the other ladies don't start panicking all over again even though as far as she knows, she's got a fifty-fifty chance of being beheaded either way.
Plus, you know: *pulls out GoT and flips to that one Arya chapter* late game mirror of Arya escape and espionage shenanigans.
One thing I will say in favour of the show, I loved the relationship between Sansa and Shae, and that Shae was fully prepared to stab some folks.
The southern sky was aswirl with glowing, shifting colors, the reflections of the great fires that burned below. (...) The air itself smelt burnt, the way a soup kettle sometimes smelled if it was left on the fire too long and all the soup boiled away. Embers drifted through the night air like swarms of fireflies. Sansa backed away from the window, retreating toward the safety of her bed. I'll go to sleep, she told herself, and when I wake it will be a new day, and the sky will be blue again. The fighting will be done and someone will tell me whether I'm to live or die. "Lady," she whimpered softly, wondering if she would meet her wolf again when she was dead.
That external shot description. ooph.
Yeah, going to sleep when you can't deal with things anymore, just to avoid sitting around stewing in anxiety over things you have zero ability to change or influence. Understandable coping method. Free random time skips.
... Oh hi Hound, watchya doing sitting in a little girl's bedroom in the dark waiting to grab her like a creep for? Just being a creep? Oh, and threatening to kill Sansa? Cool, have you met my steel chair friend?
"- but I won't be here to see. I'm going." "Going?" She tried to wriggle free, but his grasp was iron. "The little bird repeats whatever she hears. Going, yes."
"repeats whatever she hears" pfff, so far she's been asking clarifying questions, which does, indeed require repeating part of what you said. But seriously? Repeating stuff, like the last word or only a key word is thing, it's a processing thing bot to clarify that the word has been heard correctly and to seek further explanation regarding it. (In context) You also have to do it at least three times before someone's legally allowed to make the "is there an echo in here?" joke.
(Also yes, I know he's having a go at her in reference of her saying what her captors want her to say or what people around her want to hear lest they snap and have her stripped and publicly beaten or some such.)
He yanked her closer and for a moment Sansa thought he meant to kiss her. He was too strong to fight. She closed her eyes, wanting it to be over, but nothing happened.
this scene is icky. like this whole interaction. he was in her bed, waiting for her. he has been physically manhandling her, demanding a song at sword point, and Sansa cannot fight back, she doesn't have the power, not the physical strength to fight him off, nor any of the other forms of power that would make him back the hell off. All she has is all she's had this entire time: endure it till it's over.
Yes, it was the Hound who chose to back off instead of sexually assaulting her but like... what? should I give him a medal? The "not as big of a piece of shit as you could have been" award?
And then the way she covers herself in his torn and discarded cloak? Like she's covering herself in the dregs of honour and tarnished remnants of an ideal. pft, if that ain't a metaphor for her arc. what remains of goodness in the hearts of men.
The bells! Victory call! yay.
"- And do you know who led the vanguard? Do you? Do you? Do you?" "Robb?" It was too much to be hoped, but... "It was Lord Renly! Lord Renly in his green armor, with the fires shimmering off his golden antlers! Lord Renly with his tall spear in hand! They say he killed Ser Guyard Morrigen himself in single combat, and a dozen other great knights as well. It was Renly, it was Renly, it was Renly! Oh! the banners, darling Sansa, OH! to be a knight!"
Bullshit!
First of all: he's DEAD
Second of all: Renly can't fight for shit! (I don't know if this is true, but it feels true... is him being afraid of blood book canon? or show only canon?)
Would not be surprised to find out it was Loras Tyrell in his lover's armour, enacting vengeance on his behalf as theatrically as possible.

I spend a lot of time thinking about what it would take to break adrien. what would it take to make him aggressive. to take someone who’s already been to hell and back, who tries so hard to be good and be kind and be patient and just shut up and deal with it. what’s his breaking point. and, honestly, if he’s scared what does he know to do? he knows to hide but what happens when there’s nowhere to hide? what happens when he’s trapped?
chat blanc, of course. it’s adrien and “I’m not a violent dog. I don’t know why I bite.” destroying the whole world out of self defense because he doesn’t know how else to keep himself safe. you see him before he’s akumatized, and right after, absolutely petrified with nowhere to run. so what does he do? he bites.
I feel like his instinct is so often to turn inwards, but if you take all his choices away – nowhere to run and nowhere to hide – he bites. of course he does. what does gabriel do when he’s angry? what does chloe do when she’s angry? what does felix do when he’s angry? (and, if we assume adrien isn’t such a reliable narrator about his mother, what did emilie do?)
he doesn’t know anything else. if you trap a scared dog, even if he’s a good dog, he’s going to bite.
and no wonder gabriel tried so hard to keep him on a leash. gabriel was literally keeping him in a muzzle. all the time. constantly. putting him in his crate. constantly. never socializing him. never letting him run around in the sun. a performance dog, all the time, and locked away at home like he can’t be trusted. (all this doubly so if you subscribe to senti-adrien)
and if you treat a good dog like a violent dog, he’s going to bite.
if you convince a good dog he’s a violent dog, if you convince him he can’t be let loose without doing harm to the people he loves, he’s going to be terrified he’s going to bite. he’ll do everything he can to be good and be kind and be patient and just shut up and deal with it. but all he knows how to do is to bite.
he’s not a violent dog. he doesn’t know why he bites. he doesn’t know that he doesn’t HAVE to bite. he doesn’t know anything else.

Okay serious question why are there so many people complaining about how popular labru is as a ship or that’s it’s a reach with no canon basis when the entirety of chapter 76 exists? Like??????

TGCF art from 2021 which were very experimental and very much something out of my comfort zone but am still so satisfied with
(gonna ramble more under the cut 👉 )
My main inspiration for these were definitely classic storybook illustration styles and the watercolor-like illustrations included inside the tgcf books which depict hualian's daily slice of life routines as seen below
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I wanted to capture that feeling of warmth i got from reading but i also went with the storybook look because their relationship (and by extension broad strokes of the entire plot) really did feel like something out of actual myth or legend; i'm chinese indonesian and was raised surrounded by chinese culture + values so tgcf felt VERY familiar to me, it threw me back to my childhood reading or listening to tales about chinese deities, i'd say the storybook image definitely came into my mind pretty quickly bc of this
I find this style somewhat hard to replicate now but if i could or have the time to, i really want to continue the 'companion pieces to chapter titles ' concept i did with the last 2 pieces (which are of the same chapter title but i was just indecisive 😭😭), i even had 3 more planned based on my favorite titles before burning out back then

ASOS; Steel and Snow: 12 TYRION II (pages 161-172)
Tyrion visits Varys to arrange a date with Shae, then sics Bronn on a bard.
-
The eunuch was humming tunelessly to himself as he came through the door, dressed in flowing robes of peach-colored silk and smelling of lemons.
lemon(s) = 🥛
also I have just had the best mental image of Modern Day AU Varys as a Drag Queen. Probably runs a club with all the best gossip.
"I am full of surprises. Are you cross with me for abandoning you after the battle?" "It made me think of you as one of my family."
Ha! that is both a sick burn, and also really sad.
... damn. Maegor: 3 x Grand Maesters by Axe Aegon II: 1 x Grand Maester by Dragon Digestion
That "maesters wrecked the Targaryens actually" theory sounding more and more likely. Look at all this extra motive.
Bronn had turned up all he could on Ser mandon, but no doubt Varys knew a great deal more... should he choose to share it. "The man seems to have been quite friendless," Tyrion said carefully. "Sadly," said Varys, "oh, sadly. You might find some kin if you turned over enough stones back in the Vale, but here... Lord Arryn brought him to King's Landing and Robert gave him his white cloak, but neither loved him much, I fear. (...) Ser Barristan was once heard to say he had no friend but his sword and no life but duty... but you know, I do not think Selmy meant it altogether as praise.-"
OOOHHHH!!!! I just had a conspiracy theory.
Cersei didn't hire Moore to kill Tyrion, Moore was taking a chance to kill who he believed was responsible for Jon Arryn's death after getting news from the Vale from on old friend who still lives there re: the very rigged Trial and Lysa's (very loud and false) claims. Moore was taking the first opportunity for vengeance that he thought he could get away with.
What do you think? Feasible? Too much crack?
One day, I am going to come up with a conspiracy theory that contains so much pure crack, the cops will break down the door for a drug bust.
But also, given how this series uses perceptions and assumptions, even if we're in some one's POV, we don't always get the full story, but it is the best way to be sure someone actually did something for realsies.
... You know, I'm actually kind of surprised they let Lollys keep the foetus (or are forcing her to keep the foetus) to term. You'd think, given how they treat bastards and such, that they'd remove 'such a stain' before it became a problem.
(Or at the very least they wouldn't force a young woman who's been violated to carry a baby she never asked for. But then again this series does not care very much for the female members of the cast. The kind ongoing of trauma and dysphoria that is probably giving her, whether it looks that way or not in her current mental state...)
"To guard the king's life, you surrender your own. You give up your lands and titles, give up hope of marriage, children..." "House Tyrell continues through my brothers," Ser Loras said. "It is not necessary, for a third son to wed, or breed." "Not necessary, but some find it pleasant. What of love?" "When the sun has set, no candle can replace it."
D&D suck at their job = 🥛
I'm sorry, but can we just take a moment and appreciate the depth of Loras' grief? Like, I have no trouble believing Book!Loras loved Renly for real. Truly, honestly loved him first and foremost before he saw him as a pawn to get at the throne.
Show!Loras and Renly? I forgot they even fucked.
Loras being gay in the show felt like a background joke. "LoL, Sansa has a crush on a gay boy," or "LOL, Cersei is getting married to the gay boy."
Even between Loras and Renly, in the show, the first time we really saw them together, Loras was talking Renly into vying for the crown and Robert wasn't even dead yet. It was manipulation and titillation. Were they in love or was Loras just using him? Who knows, but after Renly died no one really cared, and I forgot they fucked, forgot Loras was even gay until it was shoved back in my face like a poor tasting joke.
Book!verse though? I can believe those two were in love, I can believe Loras is grieving that loss so quietly because he can't say what he's lost, what he feels, he can't express the depth of it and he has to listen to everyone around him belittle that affection and connection, and oh my gosh that poor boy.
A woman sidled into the light; plump, soft, matronly, with a round pink moon of a face and heavy dark curls. Tyrion recoiled. "Is something amiss?" she asked. Varys, he realized with annoyance.
Drag Queen!Varys is canon. Pry it from my cold dead hands. Just cross-dressing, I know, shhhh, let me have this.
"He's gone," Shae said. Tyrion turned to look. It was true. the eunuch had vanished, shirts and all. The hidden doors are here somewhere, they have to be.
You wanna bet they're under the giant stone slab of a bed? You know, that thing that our attention was directed to the last time he was talking about hidden doors?
(also, it made me think of that scene from the animated Secret Garden, with the secret door under the window seat when they were talking about it earlier, but it probably slides like that giant coffin door from... oh gish, what's the movie... it's going to come to me right as I'm drifting off to sleep. It's like an entire trope to be fair, "giant stone altar/coffin is actually a sliding door" so I'm probably thinking of several movies.)
Her cunt gave him a little squeeze, and he started to stiffen again inside her.
'cunt' = 🥛
... you know, the longer Shae talks about Lollys, the more I prefer Show!Shae to Book!Shae, just for the fact that the show version has some level of empathy for other people. I understand it's probably a coping mechanism for some kind of hidden backstory trauma (no one in this series is without), but damn the way book!Shae treats sexual assault is icky AF.
Then he made a round of the walls, tapping on each in turn, searching for the hidden door. Shae sat with her legs drawn up and her arms wrapped around them, watching him. Finally she said, "They're under the bed. the secret steps." He looked at her, incredulous. "The bed? the bed is solid ston. It weighs half a ton." "There's a place where Varys pushes, and it floats right up. I asked him how, and he said it was magic." "Yes." Tyrion had to grin. "A counterweight spell."
Ha-ha! I was right... about the location. Not the door type, though. The magic in this series is so low key or background I tend to forget it's a thing.
This does explain how he got out of the room without being heard. half-ton stones are not quietly moved, even if they have mechanisms to help them.
!! Alayaya made it back to her mother's brothel! Phew, I was low key worried something had happened to her on the walk back. you know, after she was whipped and kicked out the Keep naked?
"There is a singer who calls himself Symon Silver Tongue," Tyrion said wearily, pushing his guilt aside. "He plays for Lady Tanda's daughter sometimes. "What of him?" Kill him, he might had said, but damn the man had done nothing but sing a few songs.
You'd think Bards would do better in life, what with being a Charisma class, but no, no one likes Bards here.
And fill Shae's head with thoughts of doves and dancing bears.
... well now I have "Once Upon a December" from Anastasia (1997) stuck in my head.
Dancing Bears Painted Wings Things I almost remember. And a song someone sings Once upon a December.

(to know more about the story and the calendar on pre-order check out previous posts! LESS THAN 2 WEEKS LEFT)
In September they don't feel like going anywhere or doing any bucket lists - no getting out of the comfort zone this time around. All they need is a little comfort of one another - they take breaks for a movie night when they wouldn't, buy extra cakes they haven't tried previously, go on date-walks and take bubble baths with new scents.
Enjoying simple things in life and appreciating your own presence here feels like it should be a basic part of any bucket list.
How is your September going? Do you have any plans or achievements this month?

Many people have posted images of the bonus chapters from Sarah J. Maas's books, and I thank you for giving us access to content we would have missed out on otherwise. However, no one has posted all of them, so I figure that I can collate the links in one place.
