opla is so gay that it makes the zosan rivalry look like sanji is in love with zoro (hence the constant teasing and smiling) but zoro is so head over heels for luffy that he hates sanji because he thinks he's trying to steal his captain away from him. and i find that beautiful. this whole thing seems just straight up out of a fanfic.

I know I am a zosan shipper and all but to be so FR as far as shipping goes I was much more focused on whatever Frobin was doing the entirety of Thriller Bark. I loveeee Franky and Robin’s dynamic so much…. you can really see their bond growing between Water 7 and Thriller Bark it’s really nice, Franky tries so hard to be cool and impressive and then Robin coming out and one-uping him… the WINGS… god.
Also Thriller Bark is what gave me the hell crackship idea of Brook x Franky so take that as you will. I just thought they were really funny, I forgot why I even started that bit in the first place.

yeah yeah zoro and sanji are mirrors of each other yeah they have narrative parallels yeah they're the wings of the pirate king. zoro's got the higher bounty but sanji is the only one Luffy's directly said he can't become king of the pirates without. this is all good and well and I eat it up every single time but the truly compelling part of that relationship in a romantic sense is that it's objectively the funniest outcome possible. they'd be so mad if they knew. can you imagine having this coworker who you think kind of sucks even if he's a vital part of the team and millions of people are like. I'm going to write stories about you two having sex. what do you even do in that scenario. and the best part is that it becomes literally everyone else's problem too. clocking in bright and early at like 7:45 and you witness a physical alteration between your two idiot colleagues and then immediately after they somehow manage to dodge their third HR violation this week one of them comes up to you to make small talk and all they talk about is that other guy. "ugh can you believe people think we should get together... that's crazy... how would that even work anyway. what, like he'd take me out to dinner? get all dressed up? hah, as if..." and then they trail off all meaningfully and you're just like. I can tell you're wistfully imagining your future together. it's painfully obvious. I just wanted to refill my coffee. and every day you contemplate quitting but every so often something just goes right and it's like they're resonating on the same wavelength and maybe you catch them smiling all wide and unfettered at each other like they're the only people in the world. like just this once they forgot to hate each other. you left your mug in the microwave but you can't ruin the moment so you just have to suffer in silence. truly the ship dynamic of all time.

Randomly thinking about karakuri castle again and i just love how zoro is so done with luffy's bs *sighing*, but of course he's still going to save his captain's a$$ (another moment of zoro saving his captain's butt in karakuri castle, here)
And luffy asking for his first mate's help while lowkey whining?? (He is the cutest indeed i love him so muchhh)
This is literally zoro and luffy throughout karakuri castle i think:
Tumblr media
Another two examples, this one:
Tumblr media
And this:
Tumblr media
Like yes, his captain can be pretty handful at times.. he is a force of nature, a careless and overenthusiast ball of energy. Even zoro once called luffy a high maintenance captain, but he is also very fond of his captain... No one's making him smile and proud as much as luffy (he is whipped and already in too deep imho)
His captain is pretty 'troublesome', and a little bit of an idiot (they are both idiots) but that's his idiot! And he wouldn't change that for the world. No matter how much he grunts or complains (directly to his captain) about his captain's crazy antics
Tumblr media Tumblr media
See the fond smile of a whipped man.
At the end of the day, he loves his captain veryy muchh, that no matter how many times he gets annoyed by his captain's shenanigans, his deep affection for his captain will always outweigh his annoyance (the same principle applies to most of the other strawhats and their dynamics with luffy too!)

I think what drives me a little crazy (in a good way) about zosan as a ship is - ironically - that they're willing to do the worst possible thing, to sacrifice, for a necessary goal unrelated to their relationship. By that I mean that a common romance trope is an individual being willing to sacrifice the world, anything and anyone else, for their lover, and zosan is...not that. And for some reason that drives me more feral than that other romance trope ever possibly could. I find that more romantic than "I would burn the world for you" and I'll explain why.
The root of their specific willingness to sacrifice isn't a shortage of love or care by any means, but a complete trust and understanding of each other. To the absolute core of who they are. I'm going to refer specifically to that agreement between zosan (that I got spoiled on, so apologies if I get details wrong, I haven't gotten there in the story yet - ALSO spoiler warning if you haven't gotten to around Wano, so click away).
.
.
.
I'm referring to Sanji telling Zoro to kill him if he changes after his stint in Germa, and Zoro agreeing without need for an explanation, telling Sanji to survive until then - that is so fucking romantic to me, and people hold it up as proof that they don't care about each other but to me, it's anything but.
There is a burden of duty to being the wings of the pirate king, and they both take that responsibility seriously. They're both devoted to their captain and to their crew, and to the dreams of their crew. Zoro perhaps more outwardly unwaveringly so, but Sanji is devoted too, different from Zoro but equal in intensity. There are moments when you can TELL they're on the same wavelength, moments where Zoro gives a rare speech on the dynamics of their crew and Sanji is silent because he agrees. Sanji is terrified of hurting his found family, and he's terrified of becoming like his brothers and father. He loves his nakama and so he's willing to sacrifice his own life to prevent from turning into that type of monster.
Zoro is similar. He is willing to die for his nakama, and their dreams. They are in complete understanding of that point. Death itself is not something that scares either of them, there are some things that are worth the price. Potentially for different reasons ahem self worth issues ahem Sanji ahem but that's still something they both understand. Zoro would sacrifice himself in a heartbeat to save Sanji (he already has at Thriller bark), Sanji would do the same (again. Thriller bark), so it's not remotely because they don't care or love each other. They are absolutely willing to give all they are to keep each other from outside harm.
But what happens if the threat to the crew is Sanji himself?
Sanji asks Zoro to be the one to kill him, because Zoro is the only one on the crew who he trusts 100% to do so, to fulfill the promise, who understands. I personally think Luffy would try to save his nakama, even beyond what is possible, at his own detriment. The other crew members would probably do the same (then again I'm still not through the show so feel free to disagree with my interpretation).
But Zoro could do it if it came to that. It would be awful, and it would shatter and change him, irreversibly, heartbreakingly so - I don't agree with people who say Zoro would kill his nakama without hesitation and be fine with it out of loyalty to his captain, Zoro has a heart y'all and he loves his crew - but he could grit his teeth and do it if he realizes it is necessary, that there is no other option. Sanji trusts him to keep his word, to protect the rest of their family. Do you know how telling it is about the level of regard you have for your partner, to trust them to the point where you can easily place the well being of almost all you both treasure into their hands, once you realize you can't be the one to protect it anymore, and know without a shadow of a doubt that it'll be safe as long as it's with them? With knowing they're strong enough to accept the heavy burden of having your blood stain their hands for the rest of their life, the blame for your death on their shoulders, the shadow of you in every single thing they do, inescapable and marking every facet of their life forever? And to trust that they'll not only accept those consequences without hesitation because it's what you asked of them, but will also protect what you both treasure until their last breath, without you even needing to EXPLAIN that that's what you're asking to them to do, because it's the obvious, it's what you've both been doing all this time, it's something you both know so well that no words need to be exchanged, no reassurances need to be given.
And the implication of Sanji wanting Zoro to do this task too, of being okay dying by Zoro's hands because they're equals in every way. Especially since their fighting dynamic is mostly a competitive, I'm stronger than you, I'll never lose to someone as weak as you, blah blah. This is proof that that's not what Sanji and Zoro actually think of each other. Sanji knows that they could kill each other if either of them truly tried for one - wouldn't have asked Zoro to kill him otherwise. Sanji is also fine with Zoro being the one to defeat him. There is an inherent (kinda fucked up) romance to that notion. 'If I have to die, let it be by your hands.'
And on Zoro's part, there's an inherent fucked up romance to keeping your lover close forever because your fingers are stained with the necessity of their blood.
fUCK.
(here is a caveat that I'm viewing this in a scenario where Sanji and Zoro have established that they love each other and are potentially in a relationship. If it's before that you could also flavour it with Sanji's "I love him but I think it's unrequited, actually I think he may hate me, so it would hurt him the least to be the one to kill me" which is JUICY, but just for this post I'm viewing it where they've already established that they're valuable to each other, that they care)
How am I supposed to look at that and not fucking die. It's so much more nuanced and romantic to me personally than "I would burn the world for you" because that trope at its core is a selfish sort of protection. I can 100% see how people find it romantic, don't get me wrong, I'm not judging you if you like that trope, that's so valid. It's "I can't live without you" and "I would choose you above all others" which is romantic, but it's romantic in a different way. Depending on the characters, it's also, I would go to extremes to make sure you're alive, even if there's nothing else left after the carnage except for each other, even if everything else that makes life worth living has been destroyed for survival, and we can only ever rely on each other for the rest of time. I only care about you but not anything else you care about. I won't try to save it, even if you tell me to, even if you want me to, and won't forgive me for all I've done because I can't bear the burden of you not being alive and around anymore.
I get why it's compelling, but that trope could ignore (depending on how it's written) everything else that person could hold dear. Ignores potentially, the agency of the person being protected, a character who could have accepted the consequences and have not wanted the world to burn for their sake, who is strong enough for that burden. And true, maybe the character isn't like that, maybe they just want simply to live a life (valid of them, people are allowed to want happy endings for themselves), but my point is, it's a different archetype of romance for a different archetype of character, but it seems to be more accepted as a romantic trope then zosan's dynamic and I think it shouldn't be that way.
Zosan is the opposite. It suits their character type perfectly. For them, it's "there are things that are worth more than even you and me. I love you, knowing who you are and how you view the world and what other things you value. I love you everyday on purpose, not hopelessly or illogically or blindly, even knowing you may not always choose me. I'm willing to accept the pain of that, just to be next to you. The time we share isn't any less valuable for being fleeting and impermanent. I care about the things you care about and our lives are also worth living because of those things. It would tear me apart irreversibly to hurt you, but I would do it if you asked it of me, I would do it if that's what this life demands of us. I know you can protect what we both love, even if I'm not beside you. I respect your choices. In this, we understand each other perfectly."
THAT is my shit. That's the fucking deranged ass bs that has me staring at my ceiling at 3 am, pacing the floors at 6 in the morning, gnawing on conkcrete like a rabid dog. Brain rot brain rot brain rot.

A soft knock at the door woke you, and for a moment you felt fine. Then you remembered.
“I’ve got your breakfast, can I come in?”
Nami frowned when she saw you. She set your plate down on your desk, then pulled you into a hug.
“This whole thing seems like a lot of work. I’m here if you need me, okay?”
“Thanks, Nami. All I wanted to do was take a long shower, and now I might be breaking up with two people I’m not actually with.”
“Gotta be careful about those showers, they can fuck you up.”
You gave a laugh that might have been a sob before squeezing her tighter.
“Love you.”
She pulled away, but grabbed your shoulders, leaning her face toward yours.
“Love ya too, weirdo. What do you need today?”
“Um, can you bring me my field notes? Chopper knows where they are. I’m just gonna work in here today, I’m not ready to people.”
“Of course. I can bring you your other meals too if you want.”
Sighing as you nodded, memories of recent times in the kitchen fought you as you tried to shove them down.
“Luffy really thinks you’re sick now.”
“He might not be far off. I feel like shit.”
After Nami came back to drop off lunch later, another knock came, freezing you on the spot.
“Hi, it’s Robin.”
You cringed a bit, embarrassed for her to see you like this, but you let her in. Her eyes combed over you, lips pursing as she stepped inside. She kept a noticeable distance between you.
“Y/N, I came to apologize. I shouldn’t have been pushing you like this, I knew you were overwhelmed already. I’m so sorry I added to your struggle.”
“No, Robin, it's okay. You helped me! I really needed to hear what you said.”
Robin let out a breath, but her brows were still tensed. She looked down at the ground before meeting your eyes again.
“I shouldn’t have pushed myself on you. I’m sorry, Y/N.”
Her normally steady eyes looked heavy, a sight she rarely shows.
Reaching for her hand, you felt a gentle smile warming your face.
“I’m not sorry.”
Her lips curled up just a bit, and she squeezed your fingers gently.
“I’m so glad to hear that… How about we wait on that date until everything settles?”
You almost argued that you didn’t need to wait, but you realized that you did.
“Thank you, Robin.”
She brushed a strand of hair from your face, and you breathed in her lovely scent.
“Thank you, Y/N. Let me know if you need anything. I’ll do what I can to calm the rest of the crew.”
The comfort that Robin's presence left you with made you feel safer, warmer.
But it was as if that feeling of safety made room for your body to feel the rest.
Sitting at your desk staring at your field notes, your vision started to blur. You had to close your journal to keep tears from staining your monographs.
You kept your sobs silent, not wanting anyone to hear. Then you remembered why you’d gotten so good at keeping your screams quiet lately. You had to cover your mouth as you choked, louder sobs escaping you now.
Why did I do this to myself? I knew it would hurt. Just not this much, not so fast. I should have stopped.
But you hated that thought. The thought of not enjoying the short time you’d had with both of them. The pleasures, the laughter, the growing warmth. You didn’t want to lose any of it, even if it would hurt less.
You tried not to think about what choice they would make. The only one you wanted felt selfish. You’d get to have everything.
And if you didn’t get to have everything, then it would be nothing. You knew that even if one of the boys chose to leave, and one wanted to stay, you couldn’t continue with only one. There was too much heat between all three of you. You knew it would drive an even bigger wedge between them, potentially tearing them, and the crew apart.
I can’t do that.
So it was all or nothing, and your body was preparing you for the worst.
A knock shook you from your spiral and you moved to the door, expecting Nami. Wiping your tears and shaking your arms, you checked.
“Who is it?”
“Hi, Y/N. I’ve got your dinner, and I didn’t eat any of it.”
Your eyes went wide, but you let your captain in.
“Thank you, Luffy.”
He walked right in, setting your plate on your desk before plopping on your bed.
You stared, not sure what to say. He pointed to your desk chair, and you felt suddenly terrified as you sat and faced him. He watched you like he was sizing you up.
“Robin told me and Chopper why you’ve been weird.”
“O-Oh?”
“I’m the captain, Y/N. I need to know my crew is okay.”
Fear iced through you, and you stared into your lap. He should kick me off the crew. I’m splintering his best fighters, endangering everyone.
His hand stretched toward you, and he touched your shoulder until you met his eyes.
“It all seems a little crazy to me.”
You let out a near panicked laugh before you caught yourself.
“Yeah, me too.”
“But you care about them?”
His deep eyes looked so soft, his voice intense.
“I do.”
Nodding, he crossed his arms.
“They care about you too, Y/N.”
You felt your lips shaking, heat rising in your throat.
“As long as you care about each other, and keep fighting for your dreams, I’m happy.”
Hot tears spilled down your cheeks as Luffy started to smile.
“Can you be happy too?”
Your lips pulled into a strained smile as you tried to stop your tears.
“I’ll get there, Luffy. It’s just rough right now. But I’m glad you’re my captain.”
Luffy was beaming at you now, then stretched to ruffle your hair. He leaned toward you, and whispered softly.
“Will you keep giving me the extra food Sanji makes you?”
You burst out laughing, and Luffy’s smile stretched even wider.
“Yes, captain!”
Luffy grabbed you in a hug, twirling you as much as he could in the small quarters. This is family.
As he left he gave you one more serious look.
“Y/N, please tell me next time something is hurting you. I’m your captain and I need to know.”
“I promise, Luffy.”
All the emotions of the day had you feeling empty, but now it was more pleasantly numb. Your biggest fear of losing your place on this crew, in this family, those fears were shrinking away from you. Soft tears of relief left your eyes now, and you tried to comfort yourself against the hurt of losing Zoro and Sanji. At least I won’t lose them completely.
That thought brought back more of the pain, but you shook it off. It was getting late, and you wanted to get some air. Steeling yourself, you picked up your dishes and went down the hall, hoping to sneak them into the galley before sitting out on deck.
You crept against the wall, listening to check if Sanji was inside or not before heading in.
But you heard two low voices.
“You don’t know her like I do.”
“I care about her, Marimo. I care about her enough to share her with you. Can you say the same?”
You tried to force your body to turn around, to head back to your room, but all you could focus on was not shaking the plate and silverware in your hands.
Your heart was in your throat, and you felt faint as you waited for what felt like hours for his response.
“Yeah, I can, idiot cook.”
A gasping sob escaped you, and you tried to cover your mouth. Instead, you dropped your dishes, the plate shattering at your bare feet. You stared at the broken porcelain, and started laughing hysterically.
“Y/N!”
They both rushed out, concern in their eyes.
“Are you hurt?” “You okay?”
You were too out of it to respond, and kept laughing as they both tried to lift you. Zoro won, lifting you in his arms, while Sanji brushed along your feet and legs, checking for glass.
Your breathing slowed as you felt Zoro’s racing heart, and you felt like you could fall asleep in his arms. He carried you into the kitchen while Sanji swept up the broken plate.
Zoro placed you gingerly in the booth, his brows furrowed as he looked you over.
“Needy, please. Are you okay?”
You smiled at the nickname, and looked at them both as Sanji joined you at the table.
“I’m okay.”
Neither of them seemed convinced, but you couldn’t explain the rush of relief and happiness that had just torn through your already overwhelmed system. But you tried.
“I didn’t mean to. But I heard you.”
You felt your lips quivering again as they both seemed to soften.
“It’s okay if you still need some time to think-”
“I don’t need time my love-” “I’m good, Needy-”
Your cheeks hurt from the smile that stretched your face, especially when they both grinned back at you.
Then your mouth stretched further into the biggest, loudest yawn you’d ever felt.
“You need some sleep-” “Let’s get you to bed, dear-”
Zoro went to lift you, but Sanji tapped his shoulder.
“You just carried her, It’s my turn now.”
“I’m not letting a pervert cook into her bedroom when she needs to rest.”
“Boys,” you commanded with another yawn. “Flip a coin or something please, I’m tired.”
Your yawns were mixed with tired giggles while you saw them rustling through their pockets. Sanji’s satisfied laugh, and Zoro’s grumble gave away the winner.
Sanji lifted you gently, and you smelled cigarette smoke and spices on his jacket. Zoro followed close, opening the door, and hovering while Sanji set you in bed, drawing the covers over you.
“Good night, darling-” “Good night, Needy-”
“Night, boys…”
A soft knock woke you, and for a moment you felt all that sadness. Then you remembered.
You sat straight up in bed, hoping that it wasn’t a dream.
“Who-Who is it?”
“Your favorite navigator, lazybones. Do you want to come to breakfast?”
You jumped out of bed, stumbling.
“Yeah, I’ll be right out!”
Your reflection looked dazed, and you slapped your cheeks a few times, laughing. You hurried to get ready, and had to stop yourself from racing down the hall.
Everyone was there, already digging into their plates. They all turned to stare at you with teasing, or cheesy faces. Your face flushed, and you bit your lip before climbing into the empty spot Zoro had saved for you. You were next to him at the edge of the table, where Sanji stepped up to bring you what looked like a mimosa with tangerine blossoms for a garnish.
“Hey, why don’t I get one of those?”
“Apologies Nami, dear. I will whip one up for you right away. Would you like one as well, Robin?”
“That sounds lovely, Sanji.”
“Hey, don’t hog the booze, waiter. Make me one of those too.”
“You haven’t earned it, moss hea-”
Everyone's clamoring voices died down as you burst out laughing, almost hysterical, but so full of joy and relief.
Luffy grinned, stretching to hit your arm lightly with his fist, Chopper looked confused, Usopp was asking Sanji for his own mimosa, and Nami and Robin laughed with you.
The boys had stopped arguing, and were both staring at you. Until your skin flushed red again, and your laughter hiccuped and faded.
“Ugh. I love you, Y/N, but this is gonna get annoying real fast.”
You stuck your tongue out at Nami as she winked, and fell into quiet joy while you tried to listen to the group.
Sanji kept bringing you delicious gifts, and you’d wink at Luffy so he could snag them. Each time Sanji came your way he would give you a soft peck on the forehead, or shoulder, or knuckles.
A low grumble moved through Zoro, but all he did was wrap his arm around your shoulders, pulling you into his warmth.
Feeling like you were going to pass out, you didn’t even hear most of what the crew were saying while they teased you.
You caught yourself doing your happy food wiggle dance, and couldn’t seem to stop, even humming now and then. The crew left the three of you there, and you didn’t hear their goodbyes, just beamed lazily at them.
Sanji brought his plate to the table, and cleared his throat until Zoro begrudgingly scooted over, dragging you with him to make room on the bench. Sanji winked at you before diving into his meal, and you just sat there wiggling, out of your mind.
“I knew you were fuckin’ needy.”
You laughed while Sanji spluttered, and you patted his knee to calm him.
“What do you mean, Zoro,” you smirked up at him, teasing.
“You know what I mean. So fucking spoiled.”
“Don’t listen to him, angel. You deserve to be spoiled, to be-”
Another bout of hysterical laughter left you, and eventually they joined in.
Finally, you gained some control of yourself, and tried to hold a conversation.
“I’m so happy you both chose to stay with me.”
You stopped them both from speaking at the same time, realizing that it would be difficult to get much done with all three of you in a room.
“We definitely need to keep checking in, and figuring out boundaries. I don’t think my brain is up for that today though.”
“What are you up for, my dear?”
“Mm, I like this,” you sighed, rocking back and forth against each of their sides.
You caught Zoro rolling his eyes, and you stuck your tongue out at him.
“What about you guys? Your needs matter too here. What do you need?”
Neither spoke for a minute, and you played with your spoon.
“I guess, um…”
You looked up at Zoro, desperate to hear him actually express his fucking needs.
“How do we figure out time for just us?”
He said those words softly, and you knew how huge it was that he hadn’t said it with anger or frustration. You smiled up at him, then at Sanji who seemed to be waiting with rapt attention.
“Well, we can always check in, and change things if the system isn’t working out. But how about for now we stick to alternating days? Not just for sex, but for our time together?”
They both nodded, Zoro slowly, and Sanji with an eager smile. You squeezed both of their knees before reaching for the last of your mimosa.
You sat back, and they both tilted to see you better. You fought more laughter at what a lovely pair they made.
“Y/N, dear-” “So who-”
They glared at each other, until Sanji did a small mock bow to let Zoro go first.
Zoro’s mouth twitched as he looked away from both of you before continuing. He didn’t meet your gaze when he finished his question.
“Who’s turn is it?”
Your lips parted, and you watched them both look guilty while they waited for you.
This is crazy. How did I manage this?
Zoro cleared his throat, leaning with his elbows over the table.
“Yesterday was supposed to be my day.”
“Technically we didn’t finish my day before that.”
“You’re really gonna pressure her ab-” “You’re the one that’s pressuring her Mari-”
“Technically today was supposed to be Robin’s day.”
Your words shut them both up, and it took way too much effort to hold in your satisfied smile at their expressions.
Zoro looked shocked again, as if he’d blocked that out of his mind. Sanji’s fists had clenched, and you could see the veins in his neck and face throbbing as he turned bright red.
You couldn’t help it. A small laugh escaped you.
“Don’t worry, Robin and I decided to wait on our date until things are settled.”
You could have sworn you heard a tiny whimper from Sanji’s throat.
“How about we start things fresh with a coin toss?”
They both reached for a coin and threw them in the air, calling out the choice. You laughed as they both lost their own tosses.
“Let me do it.”
You’d grabbed Zoro’s coin, and tried to mimic them. You kept throwing it onto the table, or failing to catch it. The coin would drop on your lap, both of them reaching for your thighs to grab it for you, growling as their hands touched.
“Gods, can you guys just agree on which one of you tosses the coin? Pretty please?”
Sanji ended up giving in to your wishes again first, letting the swordsman toss. Then Zoro swore as the coin fell in Sanji’s favor. Sanji kissed your cheek while Zoro left the table after rubbing along your shoulders.
“See ya later, Needy.”
“Wait!”
You rushed over to your surly crewmate. The man who had walked in on you in the shower, and declared that you should fuck. You laughed softly at how crazy your life had been since that moment. And you couldn’t be more grateful for it if you tried.
“What,” he asked, his brows tensing as you laughed.
“It’s nothing,” you whispered, standing on tip toes in a silent request for a kiss.
His look of surprise deepened your smile, and he gripped the hair at the back of your neck when he pulled you to his lips.
A soft cough sounded behind you, and Zoro hummed as he pulled away to smirk at the cook. You nudged him out the door.
Turning around, you saw his eyes wide, waiting. You leaned toward him, feeling his soft lips kiss the corners of your mouth before pulling you into his arms to breathe along your ear.
“All to myself?”
Sanji’s raspy voice made you moan, your body still so ready even with all that had happened. You almost felt high, like all the emotions had left your body buzzing.
You looked up into his soft eyes, watching his lips part when he noticed how heavy your breaths were.
“D-Darling. I didn’t mean… Let me-”
He froze when you gripped his arms to keep him from pulling away.
“I want all sorts of lovely moments with you, Sanji, and I know we’re going to have them.”
The sweet smile that bloomed on his face made your heart dance in your chest for a moment, and you had to take a deep breath.
“I don’t want you to feel bad if we start today where we left off.”
You let heat fill your eyes as you wet your lips. Sanji’s eyes seemed to be pulled to your mouth, and you saw his breath hitch.
“A-Are you sure?”
Grinning at him, you nodded as you bit your lip.
He lunged toward your lips again, but you pressed your hands to his chest.
“Maybe we should go to one of our rooms now that everyone knows?”
You gasped as he looked at you like he was about to eat you.
“That’s too far, sweetheart. How about I take you in the pantry?”
You’d barely breathed out your ‘yes,’ before he lifted you into the air. He pulled you so fast, but still managed to grip you in a way that was comfortable. Your arms and legs wrapped around him, and he groaned while you kissed and licked along his neck.
Setting you gently in the walk in pantry, he held your face while he kissed you before rushing out. You tilted your head after him, but moaned when he returned with a condom and lube. Memories of your first time with him, and the sting and pleasure of his thick cock pulsed through you. Your eyes fell back in your head, and he gave a satisfied chuckle as he turned on the small light before closing the door.
“My sweet, Y/N… How can I show you how special you are to me?”
“You can tell me all the filthy things you want to do to me.”
You pulled your panties off from under your skirt and threw them at his chest.
Sanji had to catch himself against the wall as he moaned, almost dropping the lube.
He already looked wrecked when he met your eyes, and it drove you crazy.
“What do you want to do to me, Sanji?”
He was panting as he watched you pull your skirt up, so slowly. You took the condom and lube from him, and set them on a shelf.
Skin on fire, you didn’t know what had gotten into you. But you wanted him now, and you couldn’t stop yourself. You pressed yourself against his chest, looking into his blown out eyes. Both of you cried out when you dragged your hand along his length, already so fucking hard.
“Sanji, I asked you a question.”
Your words came out soft and dark. You watched his eyes flutter, and you wanted to speed him up. Taking his hand in yours, you whispered his name before pressing his fingers into your wet folds.
He moaned so loud, and your knees went weak. He had to catch you, then he pressed you against the wall, shoving two fingers into you.
“You are so fucking perfect. My sweet, dirty angel.”
Crying out at his praise, your body started shaking for him.
“P-Please, Sanji.”
He rutted against your thigh when you begged, and the feel of his clothed shaft rubbing against you made you whimper.
“I can’t believe you’re letting me do this to you. Such a beautiful, lovely girl. And you’re letting me touch you like this, where anyone could find us.”
He moaned into your ear, breathing in the scent of your hair.
You cried out his name, already feeling on the edge, ready.
“So gorgeous. Let me take care of you, angel. Let me make you feel good.”
“Yes, Sanji, please.”
He fell to his knees with a moan, tasting your needy cunt with that skilled tongue. His two fingers kept up their work while he swirled his tongue ring around your clit.
You had already started shaking before he plunged that third finger into you, and then you were gone. You shoved your own fist into your teeth, and panted as you bucked against Sanji’s face, coming on his tongue.
He licked you up like he was dying of thirst, while his three fingers kept prepping you.
He looked up at you, face glistening in the small light.
“You taste divine, my sweet.”
You moaned as his fingers kept working you.
“It’s probably time for me to prep for lunch, darling.”
You whined, grinding on his fingers.
He groaned, then checked his watch.
“Please Sanji. We’ll have so many more times to play for longer. Please fuck me against the wall right now. I know how much your perverted mind wants you to.”
You moaned as Sanji’s hand twitched inside you, his head falling back as he moaned.
“Please Sanji, I know you’ll take good care of me. Please, please fuck me now. I know you’d love it if someone caught us.”
He fell forward, mouth hanging open as his face pressed against your hip.
He was still taking too long.
You gripped your fingers into his hair, and pulled his face to yours.
“Sanji, are you going to make me beg?”
You watched his eyes harden, and cried out as his long fingers worked you with even more strength.
“A lady always gets what she wants in my kitchen.”
You moaned his name as he stood, kissing his way up your neck.
His fingers left you, and you clung to the wall as you watched him free his cock from his slacks before dragging the condom and lube down his length.
He came toward you, and lifted your leg so that your foot rested on a low shelf. His hands trailed along your neck, then your thighs. Your back arched as he teased his shaft along your entrance, the size of him so warm against you.
“I can’t believe how lucky I am.”
His whispers against your cheek while he dragged his tip along your clit made you shiver for him.
“To have such an exquisite beauty, coming on my face in the pantry.”
You cried out, clawing at his shoulders.
He slapped his thick cock against your entrance a few times while you moaned for him.
“To have such a gorgeous pussy, aching for me to fill it.”
“Fuck, Sanji, please!”
“Of course, darling.”
Biting your lip, your head fell back as you felt him against your center. Not even pressed into you, and your body was readying.
“That’s good, angel. Breathe for me. You know I’ll take care of you.”
You moaned for him, scratching your nails down his striped shirt as he pushed into you, so slowly.
“Gods, Sanji-”
“Shh, darling. Just breathe, and take me, baby. I know you can, you’re so perfect for me.”
Your pussy clenched around him, and he thrust the rest of the way in as he moaned.
“Sweetheart, you okay?”
“Y-Yes, Sanji.”
“Good girl… So perfect.”
As Sanji’s thick cock started pumping into you, slowly, then faster and faster, you forgot where you were, who you were. Just the sharp pain and pleasure of him inside you, and his endless, delectable words were all that held you to reality. His breath was hot on your face and neck as he panted his praise along your skin.
“Y/N, your pussy is fucking heavenly, baby. Fuck. Just like that, I feel you squeezing me so hard. You want my cock inside you, don’t you angel. You want me to make you feel so good, to take care of my perfect girl.”
“Yes, Sanji. Please take care of me.”
He moaned at that, shoving into you, thrusts becoming staggered. He reached down, massaging your clit while you gasped.
“So soft, so good for me…There you go darling- fuck, yes Y/N, milk my cock like a good girl- fuck-”
Sanji came into you with whimpered moans while you shattered around him. He had to hold your slumped body up, gingerly removing himself from you while you cried out.
You whimpered as he pressed soft kisses to your face, before reaching for your panties on the floor. He gave you a satisfied smile as he used them to wipe you clean, before using them to clean himself off after removing that very full condom.
You moaned while you watched him rub your panties on his cock, his eyes heavy lidded even after what you’d just done.
“You’re gonna need to buy me some new panties if you keep taking all of mine.”
His breath came out heavy as he smiled.
“Oh I plan on buying you so many special gifts, my sweet.”
Miraculously, you made it out of the pantry with time to spare, even rushing for a quick shower before heading back to lunch.
Even though it was Sanji’s day, it looked like meals were going to stay a shared time. You sighed as you leaned against Zoro, dampening his shirt with your still wet hair.
“Y/N, do you know if we still have any yarrow? I remember you said it can be used to staunch bleeding, and I’d like to keep some on hand if we run out of our other supplies.”
“Y-Yes Chopper. I believe we do, but I’ll check after lunch.”
I really should get back to work at some point.
But with Zoro’s warmth at your side, and Sanji’s wink while he started on dishes, you weren't sure how you were going to do that.
Especially when you met Robin’s deep blue eyes, and saw her lips curve in that teasing smile.
Who knows the next time we’ll be in danger again? I should enjoy this bliss for as long as I can.
Your selfish little smile at that thought felt oh so good.
I guess I really am Needy after all.

okay punk hazard was a bit shorter than I expected but still fun. and my two favorite things wrt zolu in this arc were:
1) getting to see a lil bit more of luffy and zoro as a chaotic, ride or die duo
Tumblr media Tumblr media
zoro claiming he can just slice a whole ass dragon in half, luffy having absolutely no doubt that he can do it and actively encouraging him with a bit of help of his own, then both of them talking mid air about how tasty it looks/how to cook it? peak crazy dumbass x crazy dumbass behavior.
it was also cute and funny how robin immediately (correctly) assumed zoro would carry luffy across the water and that, well, it kinda ended up happening as it was zoro holding onto luffy when they fell in.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
2) THIS ENTIRE PAGE
Tumblr media
(this is gonna get a bit long oops)
the thing about zoro is that he can be a big softie. he cares a lot more than ppl might think at first glance, and he worries. especially where luffy's concerned, even if his words can seem harsh at times. for all that zoro definitely trusts luffy's strength and believes in him, he worries for luffy's safety anyway. one example of this is back in alabasta when sanji points out that zoro was worried luffy might lose to crocodile despite having agreed with luffy's decision to stay behind and confront him alone.
zoro's also very aware that luffy's not really infallible, that he's got shortcomings and weaknesses of his own. but that's not an issue per se - because zoro's willing to make up for them, for luffy's sake. like in thriller bark, when he leads and convinces the crew to protect luffy's shadow and to believe that luffy would take care of everything else:
Tumblr media
on top of that, zoro takes luffy, the crew and his own role in it very seriously and something he expects from them and from luffy, especially, is to do the same. this is clearly seen back in water 7/enies lobby when zoro refuses to accept usopp back into their group unless he genuinely apologizes first and even threatens to leave if luffy doesn't square up to be/act like the captain he is. because luffy's the captain, they rely on him and he's responsible for the crew in turn. more so since, as zoro reminds him, they aren't playing at being pirates. at this point in the story, they've gone through different adventures together, fought and risked their lives each time as well.
aaand to go back to thriller bark for a bit, zoro's also the one person in the crew who has first hand experience with the kind of pain that luffy endures for other ppl's sake. all in all, zoro truly cares about luffy, so much that he's willing to put his dreams and life aside to protect him, and by extension, the rest of the straw hats too. part of that care includes not only sacrifices like the one on thriller bark, but also anchoring luffy and setting him on the right path if needed. that scene from punk hazard? an example and byproduct of all this.
though I gotta say, perhaps what I like the most is that luffy... actually listens to zoro whenever these important moments happen. those two share a single braincell and are usually on a similar (or the same) goofy wavelength most of the time, and zoro is often one of luffy's enablers, so you can see that when zoro goes off at him for real like in water 7 or at punk hazard, luffy is surprised at first. but he listens. and in punk hazard, apologizes and reassures zoro that he won't be careless again. it's a bit of a subtle but compelling part of their dynamic, that does well to emphasize the equal footing and reciprocal nature of their relationship. it's not zoro following along blindly, nor is it luffy just being an idiot and receiving undeserved loyalty. it's really good honestly.

i love captains-first mates dynamics so much because they are so different and luzo NOT being childhood friends to lovers and instead being love at first sight/only cremate luffy sought out/all that instead of 2 different kinds of growth together that kidkiller and lawbepo had is really so fun
luzo are not a slow burn they are an explosion, luffy waits for nothing, he isnt scared to lose this new and precious friendship he found. idk if theres a fic but there should be where luzo first time is post mihawk. luffy getting a clear confirmation that zoro is his and since he is His why wouldnt he tear into him. yes grave injury may be a turn off but seeing a weakened and vulnerable zoro makes luffy insane (hes alive that placated some of his protective instincts, his worry is settling down) he hates that zoro is hurt but his weak voice makes him hard and zoros proclamation of loyalty is vivid in luffy's mind. that's his right there he doesnt want to wait ..they can be careful right it's fine (zoro is crazy enough to go along you know this)
the way the power balance is so different where luzo are most equal and lawbepo is the least lol
personally i love thinking that out of aaaaalll of them killer is the most mature and savvy when it comes to relationships (because while law got more seriousness in him than the remaining five combined - he is very able to hurt bepo) killer got his cute level headed moments i adore. i love that he can hold kid on a short leash and make him think it was his idea But also just allow kid to do whatever because he adores him
⬆️ being true for all vices but in different ways. killer is indulgence, idk if im overfocusing on their age gap but imo killer somewhat still feels like taking care of kid as a younger brother so that "sure babe" is laced with care, adoration, acute awareness that he is letting a wild horse run free and it will surely break something and hurt itself and "i have a firm hand on your arm so you dont trip, i love you"
bepo sees law as godlike of course captain can do whatever, his word is absolute and he is never wrong. "you are the best thing around and the best thing in my life i love you"
zoro is so hard when luffy is wilding out it stops his brain function. "i will lose all my limbs for you i love you"

All Zoro do is sleep and eat hot chip lol
I love the dynamic Zoro and luffy have it only took one near death situation for him to let Luffy walk him like a dog cause I pass the part where he was like "I'm committed to the bit whatever you tell me I'll do it I dont even care" and now he lives his life by the law of luffy and its so freaking funny
God I love zolu dynamics so much, first of all, it took him so little to accept joining a two-men crew like it was them and a tiny boat against the world before Nami joined, you have to be crazy or gay, or gay crazy to accept these circumstances but god the promise after his fight with mihawk at the baratie??? my guy was ready to die for his captain and he was with him for like what? 2 weeks?? he really just lives for his dream and for Luffy nowadays and i think that's very beautiful
also I'm assuming you have watched the LA, so…
Talking about opla!zolu specifically now, but i love how they made it a bit more mutual right from the first season, like Luffy paying a lot of attention to small zoro details (like his favorite food, sword name even if he got it wrong, etc), the whole "i need you" scene was amazing and adds a lot of depth to their dynamic as captain-first mate
I could talk about zolu for days tbh i just love them so bad

Huge fan of Zolu stories with religious imagery in them, especially when it comes to gear 5 and the whole king of hell thing. Zoro just being so devoted lot Lufffy and the Straw Hats to a worrying degree-
yes yes uggh i feel the same way. i feel like their relationship within canon is so closely tied with devotion that their sun/moon—sun god/king of hell motifs are a natural progression. although we typically think of foils as “antagonists”, they’re really just characters who contrast in ANY sense and i really love the fact that zoro is luffy’s foil (and vice versa) in so many ways and could go on at length about how they compliment one another THROUGH their differences. their individual qualities stand out so heavily when you stick them next to each other in any scenario (combat, straw hat shenanigans, etc) but that also makes their similarities all the more obvious. and both are extremely devoted as a core character trait!!
obviously, there is the devotion to their respective dreams—and obviously, there’s zoro’s devotion to luffy, and luffy’s devotion to his crew. then, tacking onto that—as the series has gone on, zoro’s devotion to the crew itself (like you mention!). the fact that either would give up their own dreams, their own lives for the sake of that devotion (which we’ve SEEN on more than one occasion!!) makes their dynamic absolutely rife with religious flavor. dial that up to eleven and combine it with their heaven/hell-adjacent aesthetics? i am literally so weak for that shit.
they’re a little crazy! a little unhinged! they’ve got the kind of full-body, whole-soul loyalty that you only get at a level that’s a little bit religious and god damn, i’m here for it.

What are your thoughts on lusopp? (Luffy x Usopp)
i just woke up so if my words are all over the place that's probably why! being productive right here! waking up early! somebody shoot me! fighting the urge to go back to sleep so i can reply to your silly lil awesome questions! i need a coffee.
AND!!! I REALLY LIKE THE SHIP!!! (just saw you're on impel down so i won't spoil anything!)
i mean, it's not my favorite ship and i'm not crazy about it like, idk, my fiancé is crazy about them (but again, she's crazy about zosan and lawlu and i'm not so we have to deal with each other's bullshit all the time). but i find their relationship really, really interesting and complex and cool to explore. i was just writing a fic about them being besties and super clingy, gonna cry. baby boys.
i personally see them more as just best friends, but hey! if there are cute fanarts and content i'm not going to scroll away!! it's a good and cute ship!!! they're bffs almost instantly and usopp's intelligence really disappears when he's with luffy which is, not only hilarious but extremely refreshing to see. let the anxious boy be dumb and reckless!! they're so chaotic!!
not to mention that it's not only their dynamic that makes them good, but the whole water 7/enies lobby thing. i fear that if i talk about this much i might start sobbing. but, like,,, their fight is the first time we see luffy actively cry on screen. we see luffy losing control of his crew, something he used to have control over. we see luffy lost and act impulsively and not knowing what to do because his best friend and sniper is about to go away and his heart fucking breaks into a million little pieces. because luffy sees usopp's potential and he wants him with the crew, but he can't do anything to help if usopp doesn't believe in himself. and also, the merry, which is another thing luffy loses control over and has to act like a logical captain about it but we all know it's heartbreaking for him too. and then there's usopp, who feels inferior and not worthy of being part of this amazing crew. even though he has shown over and over again to be part of this little family. he just feels like he doesn't belong here. and, you know, he says he's angry because of the merry but we all know the fight isn't about that.
so, we all agree that water 7 is very very peak lusopp (and sanuso, but tbf it's just peak usopp in general because he has great scenes with everyone. especially the monster trio, shout out to my boy zoro), and then enies lobby is when they make up and it's beautiful and heartbreaking and the way usopp yells at luffy to stand up and fight makes me want to curl up on the floor and sob for ages and ages and ag-
and i would go into detail about luffy's character but i don't want to spoil anything, so let's just focus on usopp here:
lusopp's dynamic works well both as a friendship and as a ship, mainly because they're both on the same page when it comes to silly shenanigans. we see them actively enjoying being with each other and doing stupid things together and that's just,,, so sweet. but also, usopp is one of those people that have to ground luffy sometimes and tell him "fuck, no. haha. we're so not doing that" because despite acting silly, he's pretty much more logical and rational than luffy is. but, you know, the reason he's like that most of the time is because he's scared of fucking dying (which i understand. i'd be scared too in that crew. i'm glad nami is always agreeing with him with these things), and he has to be the one to stop luffy (try to, at least. never really works) from doing extremely dangerous things. which is both hilarious and actually pretty cute to watch because it shows us how well usopp knows luffy. it's obvious that they're best friends. dude knows what luffy is going to do minutes before luffy even thinks about doing it. and luffy really, really admires and loves usopp's abilities and strengths and brains. all the things usopp is insecure about? luffy loves them!!!
and, you know, it's a good ship because they have that sort of bff energy, but if you make it romantic and angsty and more intimate? that's just better! i feel like their ship is just- those friendships that turn into romantic relationships but their dynamic doesn't really change at the end of the day? and i find that really endearing.
luffy makes usopp see the best in himself and makes him want to improve as a pirate to follow his dream and feel like he belongs in the crew. usopp makes luffy be a bit more grounded to reality whenever he needs to, and he was the first one to make luffy realize that, well, fuck, he's the captain of a ship and he needs to be responsible and make harsh decisions.
but now that they're together again, luffy is sooo not going to let him go ever again. and usopp will never try to do so because he just wants to keep fighting for him!!!
it's such an endearing and funny and angsty ship. i think i just don't really ship them much because i'm more of a sanuso/zolu kind of person. but at this point just make it poly and everybody is happy (except nami bc she has to deal with the 4 of them being in love and that would be extremely tiring. somebody bring back vivi for her PLEASE).
but yeah, cute ship. not my favorite but awesome to explore and tbh one of my favorite friendships in this show. very underrated but that's just bc usopp is underrated af and it makes my blood boil with anger and the fury of hell itself. that's for another day, though!

Zoro has always been a popular kid and that's so interesting to explore. He was like a leader for the kids at the dojo back when he constantly fought Kuina. Later, he became famous in the East Blue, getting bounty hunter fans that admired him like an older brother (Jhonny and Yosaku) and people gushing about him all the time. When Luffy made him his first mate, Luffy cemented his reputation by being incapable of shutting up about how cool Zoro was. When Nami and Usopp met him, they started their dynamic of I'm Gonna Send Zoro After You Don't Tempt Me.
His fight against Mihawk was full of people going IT'S PIRATE HUNTER RORONOA ZORO OH MY GOD and Mihawk walked out of that fight also like Yes, Roronoa Zoro— now the best swordman in the world knew him by name and was betting on him, almost make him his heir to the title. Do you get how crazy it is?!?!?!
He has that "annoying" but funny habit of coming out of nowhere to defeat everyone in his path and show off. It's impressive 'cause even his enemies are his fans. 80% of One Piece thinks that there's Something Wrong With Zoro (either affectionate or derogative, it depends).
The best part is that he swore to Luffy that he'll always be famous and Luffy agreed because hey, if the captain is famous then the first mate must be famous too, right?
Modern comparison: some random guy asks one of the best players in free agency to join his team in a supporting role and the player agrees, making history as the duo that started the best freaking team in the world one random day with a total of two coins to their name.

What are your top 5 op pairings/ships (and why)? 👀
eheheh...ohohooo...okay fine
Zoro/Sanji - sorry for being predictable LMAOO I just really like how they're complete foils of each other in every single aspect, right down to personality and even fighting style. It's the opposites attract, push and pull of it deal, and also the fact they obviously VERY deeply care for each other but they're such tsunderes about it dfkghfjldl. Like I get why zosan is so popular and has been for years I truly do.
Luffy/Sanji - eheh...WCI was so good to them man but even before that, with Luffy's absolute desperation to have Sanji as his cook during the Baratie and even after Sanji says no, Luffy keeps going "NUH UH" and dragging him back hfgjkd. Like Sanji had the WORST attitude you could imagine and was a stubborn brat and Luffy went "That one. I've decided he's mine now." Also the way Luffy talks about Sanji a LOT he's always like "Yeah Sanji is the best guy ever, Sanji is so cool. Sanji makes the best food and he's so funny" like Luffy is crazyyy about this guy lmaooo they're so wholesome.
Nami/Vivi - They're just so...hrnngg even when Nami sees Vivi in the paper after years and her face just lights up 😭😭 The way she declared she was fighting specifically FOR Vivi in Alabasta, and she couldn't lose because this was for VIVI!! How Sanji even points out NAMI is the most upset upon their parting...and how Vivi admired Nami right back sooo much and how comfortable they were with each other....I need their reunion NOOOOOW
Roger/Rayleigh - *smiles in old man yaoi* To make this short I will literally never get over Rayleigh becoming a depressed, alcoholic old man after Roger's death EVEN THOUGH he has a hot wife like ??? the implication that Rayleigh tried to drown himself on the calm belt and that's how he met Hachi...Roger meant so much to Rayleigh and he was so lost upon Roger's death until Luffy came along and literally REMINDED RAYLEIGH OF ROGER and gave Rayleigh hope in the world again 😭😭
Nami/Sanji - I am such a sucker for the evil woman/submissive man dynamic you have nooo idea lmaoo like I was SO happy during WCI because Nami cared SO MUCH about Sanji and was just as desperate to get him back. The way she said she'd only forgive him this 'one time' then hugging Sanji and crying when they got him back UGHHH and Sanji ofc being head over heels crazy about Nami and how she just loves the worship?? I think they're so good I'm crazy about them dfhgjkd

I've watched the one piece live action and as a looong time fan i have some thoughts™
I think it generally went better than i expected. Two of the main selling points of the original show are the world and the characters. So i was really happy to see that the sets were really well made and with a lot of attention to detail. The crew dynamics were also really fun and mostly similar to canon with few differences that do quite well with the flow of the story
Before watching the show i had some concerns after the trailer with Luffy's "i sense some tension among the crew". I feared that their personalities would be too catered towards one-liners and funny quips but I'm happy with the ones the showrunners decided to add
Obviously the main constraints of the show were money and time (8 episodes are really not enough for the East Blue saga). Detailed review under "Keep reading" (WARNING: contains spoilers for the live action and references to manga events that have been handled differently)
However, i really liked the way they handled Shells Town and Orange Town. Getting Nami into the crew together with Zoro allowed for a more streamlined version of events and a better delivery of emotions for the buggy fight (the scene when Nami sees what remains of Orange Town hits hard when you know what happened to the villages in the Conomi Islands). Buggy being more twisted in the live action was an understandable choice to give us more satisfaction at his defeat
I personally am not a big fan of Syrup Village arc in the manga/anime and (maybe because of that) i liked how the live action turned it into a murder mystery inside the mansion. Maybe it's also because i enjoyed both Usopp and Kaya a whole lot more in the live action, giving them more personality other than them being just the cowardly liar and the frail girl. (Obviously Usopp gets more development later in the manga but he was not very likable in the original Syrup Village arc)
Baratie (my favorite set in the whole live action) has the amazing fight between Mihawk and Zoro and i love how they shot that. However, choosing to skip Don Krieg's fight with the strawhats undermined Sanji's conflict about chasing his dream vs staying with his father Zeff to repay his debt towards him. He kinda joins just because Luffy was the first pirate he saw rather than being hit by Luffy's and Zoro's conviction towards their dreams
I get why they removed the fight (too expensive for little payoff in terms of plot advancement) but in the manga it was one of the first moments where the audience (through Zeff and Sanji) sees that Luffy is not just a goofy guy but that his resolve and his determination can deeply move people
Instead we got Arlong invading Baratie and fighting against Luffy bringing forth one of my biggest complaints about the show: Luffy should have been a much better fighter than that. In the manga he was basically just having fun against Morgan and against Buggy but in the live action he struggled against both which didn't sit well with me. And then he gets beaten handily by Arlong at Baratie, again undermining his fighting skills
The actor for Arlong was really compelling wich was a saving grace because he didn't look that scary with the oversized prosthetic for the head (which was really well made) on top of his regular human body. They should have made his body look bigger with either practical effects or cgi. It doesn't matter how beefy a man can get, manga Arlong is gigantic by human standards and very well built on top of that. One piece characters have crazy proportions and the live action should have taken that into account when they decided to actually make the show
Then we get to Cocoyasi village where (to save time?) the showrunners decided that the people, Nojiko and Genzo in particular, didn't know about Nami's deal with Arlong to save the village. The village pretending to hate Nami because they didn't want to put pressure on her was a really touching moment in the manga and I don't think they should have removed it
I really loved Emily Rudd's performance for the "Help me" moment. It was the peak emotional point of the whole saga and she completely nailed it (even if it was undermined by the lack of Nami's realization that her village had been relying on her the whole time like i said in the previous point)
Now i have to talk about the b plot with the marines. I understand why they decided that Coby was the second main character after Luffy. He feels more like a regular human inserted into a wacky world, allowing the audience to resonate better with him than with Luffy. Personally I'm not a fan of Coby as a character, especially pre-timeskip, but it was nice to follow his and Helmeppo's growth even if they have too much screen time while basically doing nothing of actual substance for the plot.
This leads to my biggest complaint about the live action (and most of the one piece fanbase agrees with me). Whoever decided to change Garp's role and personality in the story has done a great disservice to the show. Having him being the one to lead Roger's execution was immediately a red flag for me and they followed through with the later episodes
He didn't feel neither like a legendary character nor like someone who falls asleep while on the job. By this point in the manga we didn't know who he was (Luffy's grandfather and the hero of the marines), hence why he was allowed to be a gag character without feeling weird. In the live action, his goofiness was reduced to him starting to laugh out of nowhere which felt more alienating than endearing
Then his final scene in the live action was used kind of like a plot twist to show that he was just testing Luffy. Some people would say this redeemed his character but to me it was even more annoying. He was testing Luffy to see if he was ready to be a pirate?! Garp?! (Are they planning to change the climax of the whole pre-timeskip show?!) And he sends Mihawk to do so?
I understand why they revealed him to be Luffy's grandfather in the first season but, if they are planning to make other seasons, what are they planning for the original moment of the revelation? Will Garp pop into the story again for the lore dump with the new designs for Coby and Helmeppo? Or will we follow them again?
All in all i'd say a solid 8/10 which is more than what i expected
