The U-Bend of Life! Why, Beyond Middle Age, People Get Happier As They Get Older
— December 16th 2010 | Wednesday 16th August 2023 | Christmas Specials | Age and happiness
Tumblr media
ASK people how they feel about getting older, and they will probably reply in the same vein as Maurice Chevalier: “Old age isn't so bad when you consider the alternative.” Stiffening joints, weakening muscles, fading eyesight and the clouding of memory, coupled with the modern world's careless contempt for the old, seem a fearful prospect—better than death, perhaps, but not much. Yet mankind is wrong to dread ageing. Life is not a long slow decline from sunlit uplands towards the valley of death. It is, rather, a U-bend.
When people start out on adult life, they are, on average, pretty cheerful. Things go downhill from youth to middle age until they reach a nadir commonly known as the mid-life crisis. So far, so familiar. The surprising part happens after that. Although as people move towards old age they lose things they treasure—vitality, mental sharpness and looks—they also gain what people spend their lives pursuing: happiness.
This curious finding has emerged from a new branch of economics that seeks a more satisfactory measure than money of human well-being. Conventional economics uses money as a proxy for utility—the dismal way in which the discipline talks about happiness. But some economists, unconvinced that there is a direct relationship between money and well-being, have decided to go to the nub of the matter and measure happiness itself.
These ideas have penetrated the policy arena, starting in Bhutan, where the concept of Gross National Happiness shapes the planning process. All new policies have to have a GNH assessment, similar to the environmental-impact assessment common in other countries. In 2008 France's president, Nicolas Sarkozy, asked two Nobel-prize-winning economists, Amartya Sen and Joseph Stiglitz, to come up with a broader measure of national contentedness than GDP. Then last month, in a touchy-feely gesture not typical of Britain, David Cameron announced that the British government would start collecting figures on well-being.
There are already a lot of data on the subject collected by, for instance, America's General Social Survey, Eurobarometer and Gallup. Surveys ask two main sorts of question. One concerns people's assessment of their lives, and the other how they feel at any particular time. The first goes along the lines of: thinking about your life as a whole, how do you feel? The second is something like: yesterday, did you feel happy/contented/angry/anxious? The first sort of question is said to measure global well-being, and the second hedonic or emotional well-being. They do not always elicit the same response: having children, for instance, tends to make people feel better about their life as a whole, but also increases the chance that they felt angry or anxious yesterday.
Statisticians trawl through the vast quantities of data these surveys produce rather as miners panning for gold. They are trying to find the answer to the perennial question: what makes people happy?
Four main factors, it seems: gender, personality, external circumstances and age. Women, by and large, are slightly happier than men. But they are also more susceptible to depression: a fifth to a quarter of women experience depression at some point in their lives, compared with around a tenth of men. Which suggests either that women are more likely to experience more extreme emotions, or that a few women are more miserable than men, while most are more cheerful.
Two personality traits shine through the complexity of economists' regression analyses: neuroticism and extroversion. Neurotic people—those who are prone to guilt, anger and anxiety—tend to be unhappy. This is more than a tautological observation about people's mood when asked about their feelings by pollsters or economists. Studies following people over many years have shown that neuroticism is a stable personality trait and a good predictor of levels of happiness. Neurotic people are not just prone to negative feelings: they also tend to have low emotional intelligence, which makes them bad at forming or managing relationships, and that in turn makes them unhappy.
Whereas neuroticism tends to make for gloomy types, extroversion does the opposite. Those who like working in teams and who relish parties tend to be happier than those who shut their office doors in the daytime and hole up at home in the evenings. This personality trait may help explain some cross-cultural differences: a study comparing similar groups of British, Chinese and Japanese people found that the British were, on average, both more extrovert and happier than the Chinese and Japanese.
Then there is the role of circumstance. All sorts of things in people's lives, such as relationships, education, income and health, shape the way they feel. Being married gives people a considerable uplift, but not as big as the gloom that springs from being unemployed. In America, being black used to be associated with lower levels of happiness—though the most recent figures suggest that being black or Hispanic is nowadays associated with greater happiness. People with children in the house are less happy than those without. More educated people are happier, but that effect disappears once income is controlled for. Education, in other words, seems to make people happy because it makes them richer. And richer people are happier than poor ones—though just how much is a source of argument.
The View From Winter
Lastly, there is age. Ask a bunch of 30-year-olds and another of 70-year-olds (as Peter Ubel, of the Sanford School of Public Policy at Duke University, did with two colleagues, Heather Lacey and Dylan Smith, in 2006) which group they think is likely to be happier, and both lots point to the 30-year-olds. Ask them to rate their own well-being, and the 70-year-olds are the happier bunch. The academics quoted lyrics written by Pete Townshend of The Who when he was 20: “Things they do look awful cold / Hope I die before I get old”. They pointed out that Mr Townshend, having passed his 60th birthday, was writing a blog that glowed with good humour.
Tumblr media
Mr Townshend may have thought of himself as a youthful radical, but this view is ancient and conventional. The “seven ages of man”—the dominant image of the life-course in the 16th and 17th centuries—was almost invariably conceived as a rise in stature and contentedness to middle age, followed by a sharp decline towards the grave. Inverting the rise and fall is a recent idea. “A few of us noticed the U-bend in the early 1990s,” says Andrew Oswald, professor of economics at Warwick Business School. “We ran a conference about it, but nobody came.”
Since then, interest in the U-bend has been growing. Its effect on happiness is significant—about half as much, from the nadir of middle age to the elderly peak, as that of unemployment. It appears all over the world. David Blanchflower, professor of economics at Dartmouth College, and Mr Oswald looked at the figures for 72 countries. The nadir varies among countries—Ukrainians, at the top of the range, are at their most miserable at 62, and Swiss, at the bottom, at 35—but in the great majority of countries people are at their unhappiest in their 40s and early 50s. The global average is 46.
The U-bend shows up in studies not just of global well-being but also of hedonic or emotional well-being. One paper, published this year by Arthur Stone, Joseph Schwartz and Joan Broderick of Stony Brook University, and Angus Deaton of Princeton, breaks well-being down into positive and negative feelings and looks at how the experience of those emotions varies through life. Enjoyment and happiness dip in middle age, then pick up; stress rises during the early 20s, then falls sharply; worry peaks in middle age, and falls sharply thereafter; anger declines throughout life; sadness rises slightly in middle age, and falls thereafter.
Turn the question upside down, and the pattern still appears. When the British Labour Force Survey asks people whether they are depressed, the U-bend becomes an arc, peaking at 46.
Happier, No Matter What
There is always a possibility that variations are the result not of changes during the life-course, but of differences between cohorts. A 70-year-old European may feel different to a 30-year-old not because he is older, but because he grew up during the second world war and was thus formed by different experiences. But the accumulation of data undermines the idea of a cohort effect. Americans and Zimbabweans have not been formed by similar experiences, yet the U-bend appears in both their countries. And if a cohort effect were responsible, the U-bend would not show up consistently in 40 years' worth of data.
Another possible explanation is that unhappy people die early. It is hard to establish whether that is true or not; but, given that death in middle age is fairly rare, it would explain only a little of the phenomenon. Perhaps the U-bend is merely an expression of the effect of external circumstances. After all, common factors affect people at different stages of the life-cycle. People in their 40s, for instance, often have teenage children. Could the misery of the middle-aged be the consequence of sharing space with angry adolescents? And older people tend to be richer. Could their relative contentment be the result of their piles of cash?
The answer, it turns out, is no: control for cash, employment status and children, and the U-bend is still there. So the growing happiness that follows middle-aged misery must be the result not of external circumstances but of internal changes.
People, studies show, behave differently at different ages. Older people have fewer rows and come up with better solutions to conflict. They are better at controlling their emotions, better at accepting misfortune and less prone to anger. In one study, for instance, subjects were asked to listen to recordings of people supposedly saying disparaging things about them. Older and younger people were similarly saddened, but older people less angry and less inclined to pass judgment, taking the view, as one put it, that “you can't please all the people all the time.”
There are various theories as to why this might be so. Laura Carstensen, professor of psychology at Stanford University, talks of “the uniquely human ability to recognise our own mortality and monitor our own time horizons”. Because the old know they are closer to death, she argues, they grow better at living for the present. They come to focus on things that matter now—such as feelings—and less on long-term goals. “When young people look at older people, they think how terrifying it must be to be nearing the end of your life. But older people know what matters most.” For instance, she says, “young people will go to cocktail parties because they might meet somebody who will be useful to them in the future, even though nobody I know actually likes going to cocktail parties.”
Death of Ambition, Birth of Acceptance
There are other possible explanations. Maybe the sight of contemporaries keeling over infuses survivors with a determination to make the most of their remaining years. Maybe people come to accept their strengths and weaknesses, give up hoping to become chief executive or have a picture shown in the Royal Academy, and learn to be satisfied as assistant branch manager, with their watercolour on display at the church fete. “Being an old maid”, says one of the characters in a story by Edna Ferber, an (unmarried) American novelist, was “like death by drowning—a really delightful sensation when you ceased struggling.” Perhaps acceptance of ageing itself is a source of relief. “How pleasant is the day”, observed William James, an American philosopher, “when we give up striving to be young—or slender.”
Whatever the causes of the U-bend, it has consequences beyond the emotional. Happiness doesn't just make people happy—it also makes them healthier. John Weinman, professor of psychiatry at King's College London, monitored the stress levels of a group of volunteers and then inflicted small wounds on them. The wounds of the least stressed healed twice as fast as those of the most stressed. At Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, Sheldon Cohen infected people with cold and flu viruses. He found that happier types were less likely to catch the virus, and showed fewer symptoms of illness when they did. So although old people tend to be less healthy than younger ones, their cheerfulness may help counteract their crumbliness.
Happier people are more productive, too. Mr Oswald and two colleagues, Eugenio Proto and Daniel Sgroi, cheered up a bunch of volunteers by showing them a funny film, then set them mental tests and compared their performance to groups that had seen a neutral film, or no film at all. The ones who had seen the funny film performed 12% better. This leads to two conclusions. First, if you are going to volunteer for a study, choose the economists' experiment rather than the psychologists' or psychiatrists'. Second, the cheerfulness of the old should help counteract their loss of productivity through declining cognitive skills—a point worth remembering as the world works out how to deal with an ageing workforce.
The ageing of the rich world is normally seen as a burden on the economy and a problem to be solved. The U-bend argues for a more positive view of the matter. The greyer the world gets, the brighter it becomes—a prospect which should be especially encouraging to Economist readers (average age 47).

Floyd's Villainess ✧ Malleus' Villainess
✧Side Story✦Masterlist
Tumblr media Tumblr media
There once lived a villainess who desired nothing more than to be wanted.
Her family, newcomers to the nobility, had ascended the social hierarchy due to their vital contributions to the kingdom. The baron, burdened by the weight of lineage, pined fervently for an heir, as the baroness had endured the heartache of multiple miscarriages, casting dark doubts upon her ability to provide a rightful successor to the barony.
In her heart, the villainess despised her ill-fated gender, for the world deemed her unworthy, and even her own mother rarely graced her presence, leaving her in the care of a faithful nanny.
But the villainess' destiny took a sinister turn when, at long last, the baroness bore a son. A grand celebration erupted throughout the barony, and slowly, the servants who had once watched over the young villainess began to shirk their duties, knowing the baroness's newfound obsession with her own offspring left no room in her heart for her daughter.
Now that the barony had secured its coveted heir, the young villainess was deemed nothing more than a pawn in the grand game of arranged marriages. It was hardly a shock when the baron agreed to a proposal from a prosperous merchant family, one that required no dowry for their daughter's hand in marriage.
The baroness recognized the potential of this union to solidify ties with the merchant family, and thus, at the tender age of fourteen, the young villainess was whisked away to the merchant family's opulent estate to meet her new family.
Life amidst the merchants was a vast improvement for the villainess. No longer was she subjected to neglect or mockery; the servants treated her with respect, and she embarked on a journey of education. Her heart was filled with a desire to repay her new family, particularly her fiancé, who had captured her affections. He was the first man to treat her as an equal, to make her heart dance with laughter, and to seek her companionship. She pledged her life to stand by his side.
The merchant family was locked in a fierce rivalry with another merchant clan, the Leeches, who hailed from the coastal regions. The eldest son of the merchant family, the villainess's betrothed, harboured an intense loathing for the Leech family, yearning to obliterate their family and monopolize the region.
With unwavering determination, the villainess sought to become an indispensable asset to her beloved, mastering the ways of a merchant and honing her intellectual prowess. Her aim was clear: sabotage the Leeches' endeavours, be ahead of their plans, and outwit them at every turn.
These actions did not go unnoticed by the second son of the Leech family, a man of keen intellect and a gift for persuasive speech. He was captivated by the villainess's cunning and sharp mind, and a rivalry was born. They vied to outsmart each other, exchanging backhanded compliments at public gatherings, while also skilfully anticipating and countering each other's moves.
However, the villainess's world crumbled when she discovered her beloved fiancé, the very man she had dedicated her life to was having an affair, and to a mere maid. Yet, her heart was not consumed by anger. She believed her inadequacy was the root of the problem, that she had not done enough to please him. Her efforts to ruin the Leech family became more direct, driven by the desire to earn her beloved's admiration.
Alas, the recognition she yearned for would never be hers. One momentous day, during a tea party she hosted to celebrate the success of her new business, an attempt was made on the life of the Leech family's heir, by a maid, the same one her fiancé was infatuated with, sought to poison him. Miraculously, the dosage of the poison was not lethal, but it left the heir bedridden for days.
The Leech family launched an intense investigation to unmask the culprit, and it did not take long for her lover to implore her to take the blame, to save his beloved.
Love, as it often does, clouded even the sharpest minds. The villainess, whose only desire was to please her beloved, agreed to shoulder the blame.
And so, she found herself imprisoned in a dark, desolate cell, wasting away the prime of her youth. But there was one person who would pay her a fateful visit, the man who had once been her rival.
"I didn't want you to end up like this," he began, shattering the eerie silence of the dungeon.
A faint smile graced her lips. "A place like this does not befit a gentleman like you," she replied.
He chuckled bitterly. "Please, my dear, you and I both know I am far from a gentleman."
She shook her head fondly, well aware of his misdeeds in the shadows. "Well, you always were a gentleman to me..."
The air grew thick with unsaid words, until he found the courage to break the silence once more. "Why did you take the blame?"
She sighed. "Whatever do you mean, Leech?""
He scoffed. "You had countless chances to harm my family before, and you never did. You always played fairly. If you had attempted such a thing, it wouldn't have been so sloppily done, and you certainly wouldn't be sitting here now." His intense gaze implored her to explain herself.
She cursed him in her mind for knowing her that well, but in the twisted life she's lived, maybe he was the only one who truly knew her.
"... Leech, you wouldn't know how it feels to be not wanted," she muttered, feeling tears well up in her eyes.
He stared at her in silence, unable to respond to the depths of her words.
"From one rival to another," she breathed, "may I ask for one last request?"
"Of course," he replied, his eyes cast down. "It would be cruel of me to deny my lady's request."
She huffed at his words. "I... I seem to have a craving for bitter almonds... They're my favourite snack, you see. Could you bring me some?"
She looked up to stare into his eyes, for perhaps the last time. His mismatched eyes were glossy, his eyebrows furrowed and it was the most emotion she had ever seen on his face.
"As you wish... I shall have them delivered before dawn," he replied hoarsely, his voice trembling as he turned to leave.
"Thank you... Jade."
The man froze in his steps, his heart heavy with the name you had never called, before resolutely walking away from the prison cell.
The next morning, the villainess was found to have passed away with a smile on her face, an empty box that still carried the faint scent of almonds cradled in her arms.
though Jade wasn't the main character, he and his twin brother grew largely popular for their interesting banter and chemistry with the main protagonist
the fans were particularly fascinated with his tragic love story, though they were only told bits and pieces of it, since the main plot was more focused on how the main protagonist would pull Jade out of his slump and get revenge for his love
we're told Jade fell in love with "a remarkable woman who was used as a mere pawn all her life"
the fanbase collectively agreed the villainess deserved a better ending, and more so for Jade who became so emotional for her despite always keeping up his appearances
the gap moe was just too strong to resist
and though you wished for him to get a better ending, you never imagined being the one to rewrite the ending, and especially not as the reincarnated villainess
by the time you entered the story, you had just gotten affianced to the scumbag of the merchant family
but even living in her birth family for a month was enough to make you realise how deep the villainess' trauma ran
even more so when you experienced the kind treatment in the merchant family, it was no wonder the villainess' detached mind threw away all reason to dedicate herself to her scumbag of a fiancé
perhaps she had never known companionship, but for you, the scumbag's attitude was an instant red flag
he would gift you cheap gifts he found on the street, constantly remind you what an honour it was to be his fiancée, but you suppose even these acts could warm the heart of a wounded child
you know that the Jade would eventually become your rival, and you would sacrifice yourself to protect the scumbag
buuut, you also know Jade fell in love with the villainess
so, if you were to side with Jade and help him put the merchants family under the Leech family's influence, there's a high likelihood he would spare you
and even if he doesn't fall in love with you, you would still be a skillful businesseswoman that could continue to work for the Leech family, or simply start your own business
basically just side with Jade and do not harm the Leech family!
only... the novel was far too vague about the "genius of the villainess", and you only know some of Jade's business plans
this means actually studying business and transforming yourself into a crafty businesswoman worthy of being the rival of Jade Leech ( ;∀;)
but you can do it!! the villainess managed to, so why can't you?
and soon you started working on the field, actively working in information guilds and business ventures so you could make a name for yourself for him to notice you
and it didn't take long before you had your first encounter at a ball
A velvety voice spoke from behind you, "I don't believe I've made your acquaintance, my lady."
You turned gracefully, offering an elegant smile as you dipped into a curtsey. "Indeed, I don't believe I have. May I have your name, sir?"
He reciprocated with a courteous smile. "My name is Jade Leech, it's a pleasure to meet you,"
"Mr. Leech," you nodded with a hint of intrigue. "I'm—" Before you could complete your introduction, he interjected.
"My dear, I already know who you are," he said, something sinister twinkling in his hypnotic eyes. "Let's skip the pleasantries, shall we?" he suggested, and you noticed that the other guests had discreetly departed, leaving only the two of you.
"It seems my lady is quite bold, your business endeavours are rather... striking," he hummed.
A chuckle escaped your lips. "I shall take that as a compliment." Your veins tingled with anticipation, for the game had begun, and you had no intention of losing. "I'm rather impressed by your family's ventures as well,"
"Oh?" he arched an elegant eyebrow. "Do elaborate."
Game set.
"Your family operates with remarkable efficiency, I suppose any business would only aspire to such!" You said. "Hmm... It's a miracle how swiftly you've gained the support of so many reliable allies..."
You noticed a slight falter in his composure, surprised that you possessed information about the Leech family's coercive tactics, how they had either threatened or bribed indebted families into compliance.
Match.
You inched closer to him, standing on slight tiptoes to whisper into his ear. "I think we can agree we can both hurt each other, but I'd much rather think about what we could accomplish together..."
Stepping back with a smug grin, you took in his expression, adorably dazed. "Now, if you'll excuse me," you curtsied once more before turning to take your leave.
But if you had looked back, you would have seen Jade Leech with his hand concealing a sly smile, a faint blush tingeing his ears.
from that meeting, you've basically become business partners with Jade
though you do so secretly in guild meetings so the scumbag doesn't find out
you offer Jade with your family's business plans and the two of you come up with ideas to make it seem like the Leech family naturally outshone them
of course, Jade was rather suspicious of you at first, after all, why would you be working against your future in laws??
but you explained to him that, in reality, they never saw you as family
you were just a pawn in their eyes, and particularly because the marriage wasn't official yet, you were the best person to discard in order to affect the family
you could have been wrong, but it felt as if there was a bubbling anger deep within Jade's eyes as you explained your situation to him
but he very quickly switched back to his typical closed eye smile, eagerly talking about another plan to thwart your family's business
what also came as a surprise was that the poisoning incident failed
somehow, floyd's fiancé realised his tea was poisoned
still you can't deny the glee you felt when Jade assured you that he knew you didn't do it
but now, the Leech family is adamant to make the merchant family, and particularly the maid suffer
so Jade devises a plan to simultaneously protect you, and set up the downfall of the family
rumours started to spread of what cruel and immoral woman you were, scandalous bribes made with the city guards, indecent behaviour spent with your colleagues, all painting the picture of a wicked woman
the scumbag very quick to fall into the trap, started accusing you of having affairs and illicit trading
you denied these accusations, but your words did little to calm him
and all it took was a little alcohol (courtesy of Jade) to make him declare an annulment of your engagement at a party
maybe jade set up more rumour spreaders to make him more anxious, but you'll never know for sure
so as planned, you accept the annulment
but of course, you've been well-prepared to fight back against these baseless accusations, so one by one, you refute them with your business logs and witnesses to prove your innocence
your fiancé is speechless at the end of it, and the whispers of the crowd seem to show you've successfully declared your innocence
you quickly excuse yourself to a balcony to "regain your composure" and asked everyone to continue the festivities
but it wasn't long before a familiar face joined you
You didn't need to turn around to know who the footsteps were from. "Leech, the curtains are drawn. Shouldn't a gentleman such as yourself know the balcony is occupied?"
You turned to face him, finding his eyebrows furrowed in an amused manner. "My apologies. I assumed my lady might welcome some company," he replied playfully. "What's the matter my lady, you don't seem happy with the annulment at all."
A wistful smile graced your lips. "I am happy, of course, this is what we've worked towards..." You turned your gaze skyward, your eyes glistening. "It's just... I won't have anywhere to return to now,"
"Whatever do you mean?"
You scoffed. "Please, as if you didn't investigate my background before we even met," you retorted, turning to him with incredulity. "...you know I have no place in that house," you murmured quietly into the night.
"My pearl," he reached to cup your cheek, directing your gaze towards him. "How would you find a place next to me?"
His suggestion left you wide-eyed. "But the dowry-"
"You know I have no need of that," he smiled. "In fact, I think I should prepare a gift for my in-laws,"
"I wouldn't want them benefiting from you-"
"Now, now my dear," he tenderly brushed away the stray tear that fell, "when have you ever know me to be so kind? I would of course make them... suffer, a little," he added with a mischievous grin.
You couldn't help but burst into laughter at his proposal. "Hahaha! I like the way you think, Leech,"
"Is that a yes, then?" he asked, his eyes tenderly focused on you.
You leaned up to him, pressing your lips to his. He initially froze at the contact, but then melted into your embrace.
"It's a yes, Jade."
within days, you had moved into the Leech estate, and the family very fervently welcomed you
floyd has mentioned several times how this was Jade's dream come true and how he's glad he doesn't have to spend hours moping in the library about not seeing you anymore
and as expected, the merchant family soon found itself crumbling into a financial crisis now that you left them
the leech family graciously saved the family from bankruptcy, leaving them in debt of them
and Jade scoured/fabricated enough evidence from the silver hairpin and the teacup to apprehend the maid, leaving the scumbag alone and heartbroken
and though your blood family received a large sum from the Leech family, started facing financial difficulties left and right due to unsuccessful investments
it seems your new fiancé isn't very forgiving towards anyone who wrongs you
but then again, you wouldn't forgive anyone for crossing your eel either

Also something really important I want to point out about Aziraphale's religious trauma.
It's often framed as him being directly abused by Heaven, generally emotionally. And while I don't doubt he's been belittled at points - probably not by Gabriel, the iconic exemplar of the Toxic Positivity boss, but we know how Michael and Uriel etc. can be - it also seems like he's received quite a lot of praise and has generally managed to pull off the appearance of being A Good Angel, or at least a satisfactory one. I don't think, and this is controversial, but I don't think Heaven was usually overtly hard on him.
Because that's not how this kind of cult mentality usually operates. Instead, it teaches you to abuse yourself. Your overseers don't have to directly hurt or insult you if you're so ingrained with fear of failure by the culture you were brought up in that you constantly question yourself as not good enough.
It's not as... satisfying, I guess? As an external abuser being the main issue. But it's a lot more real. At least to me, because I suffered so much anxiety over being 'good' when I was a kid, and it wasn't from direct abuse. It was absorbed from the culture I was surrounded by. I picked it up by osmosis from society at large, and it tormented me. I worried, I doubted, there was a time I literally feared going to Hell. And I wasn't raised strongly religious. My mother certainly treated me as a Good Kid, and never gave even the suggestion that I wasn't. But I felt that way anyway. And it tore me apart. Because internalizing that shit makes it so much harder to fight.
And to be clear at this point, I am not saying Heaven isn't abusive. I just think the nature of its abuse is more subtle and insidious than it's often given credit for. And - this is even harder to accept, but it's true, and it's important - it's not just abusive to Az. All the angels are victims of it. Yes, even Gabriel. The moment he, one of the most powerful forces in Heaven, steps out of line, we see that no one is exempt. Never even mind Muriel, who is literally on the lowest rung of the Heavenly ladder and has probably never been told they're worth anything beyond being, you know, an angel, so at least you're better than humans and demons.
It's a contrast with Crowley, who has long since accepted most (not all, there are definitely some deep issues remaining, but they're nothing like Aziraphale's) of his internal doubts and struggles. His fears are almost entirely external. He doesn't beat himself up if he fucks up. He doesn't have to. There are people happy to beat him up for him. So when things go really bad for him, his instinct is to run. To get out of the way of harm as much as possible.
The fact that Aziraphale is harder on himself than anyone else could be is a vital part of his character. He self-punishes. He self-criticizes. He feels awful every time he breaks the rules in the slightest, even though he isn't usually caught at it. Crowley can find some safety in solitude if he keeps his wits sharp and his head down. Aziraphale can't, because he carries Heaven's conditioning with him at all times. He doesn't need oversight, it doesn't take external threats to keep him in line. You don't need direct threats when literally everyone in your celestial workplace has seen firsthand the consequences of rebellion.
I don't know if I'm making sense here. Again, this is informed by personal experience and I can't claim to be unbiased. But I see so much internalization with Aziraphale. He literally can't even accept praise without being nervous as hell, and I don't think it's fear of punishment or ridicule that's his primary motivation. He simply cannot ever be good enough for himself.
That's how they get you.
Anyway, I think it's why his reaction to disaster is the opposite to Crowley's, why he feels he has to turn and face it and somehow avert the horror (or, alternatively, find some way to reconcile it in his head and accept it - because let's be real, that's often what happens) rather than get himself away. He's less afraid of failing his superiors than he is of failing himself. And God, who is, objectively, the biggest abuser in the entire story.

Dakota was tired of the plain white walls, the doors with locks from the outside only, and the constant surveillance and prying eyes of the place he grew to see as his “home” because of his very frequent visits.
He constantly went to the mental institution, leaving for only a few days before coming back.
Younger kids and visitors looked up to him, and he enjoyed their company, despite not understanding why they did. He let them touch his scars and braid his hair. He was an excellent role model, despite it all.
Dakota found the schedule of getting up, getting vitals checked, going to breakfast, doing group therapy and so on annoying, as anyone would.
Some days, he lays in bed — till a security guard comes and drags him out — wondering, “how the hell is this boring, horrible, stuffy place supposed to fix people?”
He never understood. And he doubted that he ever would. Till you came. Then, it seemed, like all his old problems solved themselves and fresh problems arose. [including the one in his pants.]
He's been through multiple therapists, older and younger, brand new and those who've been here for years. None can help him. Instead, he just lies till he's released. And then comes back within days. [always having to be restrained by multiple cops, coming back kicking and screaming that he's going to kill himself and everyone else.]
However, as soon as he saw you, his day brightened immediately. Other staff members were reasonably shocked that the gloomy, mean, depressed, easily upset, violent Dakota seemed...happy for once.
Except, you're not his therapist. He's pissed. Of course he is, you're the first person he's ever liked in this stupid fucking place! [don't mention the fact the two of you haven't even met.]
With a little asking [blackmailing.] around, he learns who's your patient. His name being Quinn, it's around 3 pm, around the time where everyone's free to do whatever, and just before therapy starts. Perfect!
He walks up to the guy who's your patient, swiping a pencil off the kids' table. [none of which protest, knowing by now that it's best they don't.]
Dakota taps Quinn on the shoulder, making the shorter guy turn around, his mouth open to say something, before a sharp scream escapes instead.
Dakota has a crooked grin on his face as he forces the pencil further into the guys eye socket, yanking it out as Quinn drops to the floor, and he stabs the — now broken — pencil into his throat, just a couple inches from his artery.
Quinn chokes on his own blood, while security guards force Dakota off the smaller boy, forcing him to solitary confinement. Dakota laughs as they pull him away, while nurses do their best to keep Quinn alive.
“Stupid fucking homicidal maniac.” One guard growls as they shove Dakota into his cell, while Dakota grins the entire time, uncaring of what the others say.
A couple hours pass, and Dakota once again grows bored and weary of the bleak walls, the uncomfortable bed, and the never-ending silence.
Eventually, the door opens. He's laying on his bed, looking up at the plain white, boring ceiling. He doesn't cast a look at the intruder, and couldn't care less who they are.
“Your name's Dakota, right?” Dakota flinches at the sound of your voice. His head snaps over towards you, where you stand in the doorway, and he can see one of the guards watching carefully.
You step further into the room, accessing the room with a frown. You seem to be just as upset as Dakota with the way the room looks.
“I saw what you did to Quinn — my patient —, and I asked if I could become your therapist instead. They agreed, of course. Which is why I’m here.” Dakota’s distracted by just how sweet you sound, and the kind smile on your face despite it all.
He has a hard time wrapping his head around it. You saw him attempt to kill someone, and yet, you're being kind to him? It doesn't make sense. You don't make sense.
You sit down opposite of him on the bed, and begin asking the normal questions. Instead of lying like he normally would, he actually tells the truth. It shocks both you and him.
“What do you go by?” “He/him.”
“Why are you here currently?” “I tried to kill myself and a friend.”
“Do you feel regret for what you did?” “No.”
The questioning goes on for hours, and the two of you talk for hours, far longer then your supposed to. Therapy ended a long time ago.
No, now it's more like a chat between you two, the way you two connect is like two pieces of a puzzle.
You glance up at the clock, eyes widening when you notice the time. You apologize for having to leave so abruptly, and Dakota frowns in response.
[silly, silly you, thinking you could leave him so easily? as if.]
Dakota grabs your hand, tearing up as you glance down at him. “Ple-Please, don't leave, I—I...I’m afraid of being alone...pl-please...” He closes his eyes, swallowing thickly.
You pause, taking pity on him as you sigh, nodding as you sit down on the creaky bed once again.
He lays his head on your chest, making you tense up as you slowly put your arm around his shoulders.
“Y’know, we really shouldn't be doing this. Isn't this going against some law?” You mumble against his ear, and he shrugs.
“I—I don't know...Y-You don't have to stay.” Dakota’s voice trembles, tears sliding down his cheeks as he squeezes his eyes shut, wrapping his arms around your waist.
You bite your lip, glancing at the door, he was right. You could leave. But your job is to make him better, leaving him would only make it worse...right? You shake your head.
“No, it's fine, I’ll stay. But I have to leave early in the morning, kay, Dakota?” You glance down at him, your eyes meeting bright green ones. He nods, smiling against your skin.
“That’s okay! Just, don't leave yet, please?” You nod once again, and the two of you talk while you slowly nod off. Eventually you lay down, him still laying against your chest.
You fall asleep with the red haired boy laying on your chest, a sick, crooked grin on his face. He moves out of your grip, straddling your hips.
He plays with your hair as he watches you sleep, oh so peacefully, by the side of an attempted murderer. It's almost insane how you fell asleep, knowing he was by your side and you two were alone.
He leans down, his chapped and bloody lips meeting yours, it's delicate, barely even a kiss.
He giggles giddily, pulling out your phone and rolling to your side, head on your chest and phone in hand as he goes through it.
He deletes anyone in your contacts who may threaten your relationship, takes photos of you two, amongst other things.
Slowly, his eyes grow heavy, and he stuffs your phone back into your pocket, closing his eyes as he curls around you possessively.
The two of you sleep like that til someone comes in the morning, and sees you and him curled up, the thin blanket thrown on the floor by Dakota so when it got cold you'd curl around him.
Dakota’s eyes are already open by the time the nurse walks in, giving her the middle finger and that crooked grin on his face while her eyes widen, and she slowly walks out, closing the door.
You're completely unaware of the monster you're supporting, and it's going to stay that way, whether you like it or not.

astrology app for clowning purposes: interaction (post 3)
this is the third post about running birth dates of two amazing gentlemen through the astrology app called TimePassages
I don't take astrology too seriously, mainly i use it for generating "possible character cards" in my creative writing exercises, to think outside the box of my own habitual thinking
but of course i am curious. and i ran the option of analysing the potential for interaction between two persons, that this app offers. and copied parts of the text, not adding my own interpretation
what's about this connection?
they are coming together for some serious mutual healing, they can expect intense emotions and the exposing of their most cherished and unknown secrets through this relationship, perhaps unknown even to their conscious mind
there may be a feeling of being together for some karmic purpose
they have come together for some serious life purpose that can heal themselves and others, although everything this deep requires passage of time and reflections of higher awareness.
accepting, respecting and loving the woundedness in each other
each provide a loving and compassionate mirror to each other
there is a sanctuary for them both in this arrangement
home, family, business and romance are all supported
may feel a psychic bond, as though connected from some ancient, and perhaps unconscious, past experiences together
almost telepathic communication with each other
the expansion, growth and development of each of them activates work with public and world karma for the other
cooperation between them can be extremely fulfilling when they employ proper balance and discrimination
alike but different, getting along with similar styles and interests

ability to travel and work together, to understand and work with humanitarian and cultural perspectives
awakening of the mind brought by this partnership, stimulation of the individual uniqueness of each of them
together they are likely to enliven others with their gifts and understanding
strong and beneficial connection with each other
an idealized connection
an instant emotional rapport with one another

loyalty is strong between them, with devotion maintained, and long-term practical sensitivity aligned with shared goals.
they help each other, feed each other and emote together in mutual acceptance, with warmth, affection, and a strong show of positive feeling, which is likely to be felt and shared by others
in a romantic context, this represents a supportive and feelings-oriented relationship, a powerfully symbolic statement about bonding, nurture, and loyalty for each other
protective toward each other
easy companions and enjoy living together, and sharing the same spaces
comfort and nurture each other, being natural emotional allies that together can forge a comfortable and safe home environment that keeps away the harsh realities of the mundane world

enduring emotional sympathy
receptivity and congeniality, nurturing of each other in a rapport of peaceful feelings and sensual enjoyment, relaxing in trust and exploring the loving nature of life together
the older one will value and lend support to the emotional needs of the younger one, who in turn will nurture and encourage the aesthetic sensibility and values of the older one
the empathy and support of the older one are appreciated by the younger one, who also provides solid ground for the older one, at times either financially or in some creative form
the softer side of each of them is explored, along with the desire for artistic satisfaction, financial growth, and pleasure in general
welcome and embrace all forms of worldly enjoyment together with loving grace
jewelry and the arts play an important part in this relationship

in a romantic context, they are in for happy times, romantic pleasures, playfulness, intense desire, expansive sexuality and creative lovemaking
there is a challenge or obstacle of some kind in this relationship, especially in the background macrosocial factors, related to working with masses and/or larger sociopolitical influence

HAPPY must’ve misinterpreted your thoughts or your vitals, maybe it was the fact that you seemed like you were hyperventilating as you vomited, or maybe Spiderman was the one that pulled it away from your face but your hands flew immediately to your face as if to cover it although it was useless, you knew it. When the panic subsided, you took a deep breath as you recalled the past events. Mission, Stabbed, Spiderman, Blackout. It wasn’t giving you much information about where you were now, although it wasn’t dark when you woke up though and considering the sluggish nature of your body and the beeping going on around you, it became obvious that you were in a hospital room.
You glanced out the window, the sky was painted with a pink and reddish color, it was dawn already and you knew you were knocked out for a few hours. You grimaced when you tried to sit down, a sharp pain coming from the place where you’d been stabbed a couple of hours ago. Fuck me, you thought as you took the covers of the bed off and found yourself in a robe and just your underwear. You wondered if they had to cut your suit open but you decided not to dwell on it. Instead, you turned to your right and glanced at, what you believed was, the notes from the doctor.
Haematemesis, it said with a red underline and you cursed mentally when you saw below the word surgery. You hated hospitals, you hated the sterile atmosphere and most especially, you hated the memories that they brought back to you. You quickly ripped the tubes in your arm via IV with a wince as you tried to stand from the bed and stretch. Your body ached so much but honestly, the pain was dull compared to the one you were feeling a few hours before, you were fixed and better. You flipped through more notes to check what kind of pain meds you were on and if there was anything else you had to be aware of before you left.
Not that you had a plan on how to leave exactly, you couldn’t be caught dead in a hospital robe and underwear on the streets, especially if someone recognized you. You sighed slowly as your eyes glanced at the room, there wasn’t a bag with your things or your earpiece and there wasn’t even a phone to contact HAPPY.
Was this how Tony felt when he landed in the middle of Texas? You thought. You sighed as you sat back down on the bed for a second, trying to organize your thoughts.
You knew you needed your earpiece and some clothes fast. You were aware that someone would probably be coming soon to check on you but it was a risk that you couldn’t take. If Tony found out of your little night outings you would probably be sent to Switzerland or Wakanda for god knows how long and you would be painted by the tabloids as a brat that was putting herself in terrible danger to prove her daddy wrong.
Long story short it would be a bad time.
You took a deep breath before jumping from the bed and slowly padding through your room, you rubbed your eyes as you got to the door and opened it slowly. The door creaked softly and you hoped no one had heard you, you glanced at the hallway and it was empty, just the normal awful strong lights of the hospital, another hallway that connected with this one, the stairs at the end of the hallway and an elevator at the other end.
“Thank fucking god,” you mutter to yourself, you almost didn’t even realize what you were doing until you’d slipped out of your room. You began to make your way through the other rooms in the hallway but there was no one and nothing. No clothes, not even blankets, but you knew there had to be another floor full of patients and clothes that you could steal.
Maybe it wasn’t the best thought plan you’d had but surely, you thought, people would leave clothes unattended in a hospital, and at least most of them would have a loved one that would bring them clothes, so you couldn’t feel that sorry for such a petty crime. You just needed clothing from civilians but honestly, you would feel fine if you found scrubs, honestly, anything was better than the robe that you were wearing, which was clearly showing your underwear from the back, your whole back and ass were out.
You quickly started making your way to the elevator to move through the floors, you turned around to check on the hallway and there was still no one, you felt almost out of breath as you reached the elevator and quickly pressed the button.
The elevator dinged and you sighed contently, maybe just maybe it had been a good plan. The elevator was almost there and you felt like you’d done it, you were almost out but at that moment, you heard footsteps and whispers.
You snapped your head towards where the noises were coming from and you felt your heart drop. They were coming for you, not people going up and down the stairs or simply voices coming from the other hallway, they were coming to where you were.
You glanced at the closest room but they weren’t close enough, if you even tried it you would just be seen padding around pathetically trying to hide and you couldn’t risk yourself bleeding out again with any strong movement, you simply couldn’t. Your only choice was for the elevator to open at that second.
“Come on, Come on,” you mainly grumbled to yourself as you pressed the button again but it was too late.
The footsteps and whispers ricocheted through your hallway and you wished you didn’t recognize his voice, you felt like you wanted to die right there and then, they were probably looking at you as if you were a mad woman.
“y/n?” Spiderman asked softly.
“Ms. Stark?” another voice asked.
Fuck me.
You probably looked like a mad woman. You were cursing the elevator softly, you were showing your underwear and you were wearing no shoes. You felt your cheeks getting warmer by the second and you closed your eyes, hoping that maybe the tears of anger in your eyes would subside.
Begrudgingly, you turned around slowly towards the voices as your cheeks got warmer and warmer by the second, you would be glad if just right there you would pass out and you felt like passing out but nothing happened. There he was the menace of the city according to the Daily Bugle and a Doctor, she was young, really young, and she seemed to be extremely disturbed by your little show.
“I…” you muttered but you just couldn’t find the words. “I-I was looking for my things,” you stumbled to find the right pitch in your voice but it all went through the window once you saw, really saw Spiderman.
He hadn’t cleaned his suit, he was still covered in blood. You felt your cheeks tingling with heat from the embarrassment, you had actually puked all over one of the most recognizable heroes of New York City and now he had watched you in your underwear and not in the fun and sexy way that you would usually show your underwear in.
“This?” he asked softly as he lifted softly the bag he was holding in his hands.
Your eyes went to the bag immediately and you saw the red-stained suit and bag along with a small earpiece. You sighed contently as you started to softly paddle your way towards them, you tried to pretend that you didn’t notice the Doctor’s small winced as she looked at the way you walk and held your stomach, a little bit hunch over because of the plain.
“And why do you have it?” you asked as you took a hold of the bag before looking up at Spiderman and raising your eyebrows inquisitively.
“Oh,” the Doctor said. “We usually give the patient’s companion their things,” she explained to you, watching you take the bloody earpiece and place it on your right ear, she winced but you honestly didn’t care.
A little blood never killed anybody, you thought to yourself.
“Well,” you chuckled as you gazed back at Spiderman. “He brought me here against my will so…”
Spiderman quickly seemed to tense up but then he stumbled through his words, just as you’d had before, while he gazed at the Doctor and back at you.
“I- I didn’t, I- you had a wound on your- you could’ve, you could’ve died!” he exclaimed and you just felt like laughing a little bit, but you chose a small smile.
“Calm down, Spiderling,” you said softly. “I didn’t mean it like that, thank you,” you replied softly.
“You’re welcome,” he replied softly.
His voice faded out as you gazed at him and goosebumps appeared on your skin. His voice sparkled with sincerity and was so soft that you felt like there was just you and him there. He was sweet, it made you simply melt and ooze something that you never thought you would feel again in a while.
At least not until you met Peter Parker.
But your thoughts were quickly snapped away by the Doctors voice, both Spiderman and you whipped your heads towards her.
“I’m Dr. Claire Temple,” she said as she cleared her voice and offered you her hand. “I performed general surgery on you about five hours ago and I wanted you to stay a little bit longer for observation,” she stated as you finished shaking her hand.
She seemed young but honestly, her eyes were the things you noticed first, and those big brown eyes seemed like she had lived a thousand lives. They were harsh, she had dark bags under her eyes and you could tell it had been a long night and probably it was your fault. She stood up straight as she gazed at you and you could tell she was more on the strict side of things, but that just made you wonder why and how she had gotten herself into this line of work and being friends with Spiderman.
And although you would’ve liked to know and appreciated her insight, you needed to politely decline.
“Oh no,” you said and Claire immediately raised her eyebrow. “I can’t like no one knows I’m…” your words died down in your throat as you tried to find the right words for your activities.
“Still a superhero?” Spiderman intervened and you turned to him with a frown.
“It’s not like that, I-” you explained but she cut you off.
“You don’t have to worry,” she replied as she quickly pointed to your room and started to walk there. “I and the people who work for me are very discrete with everything that may happen in your line of work,”
You open your mouth. Close it. You frown at her words.
“Wait, do you mean you,” you chuckled to yourself because it seemed a bit ridiculous that someone in New York was patching multiple heroes left and right without anyone noticing. “You are always fixing up superheroes?”
She shrugged. “Something like that,” she replied as she nudge her head for you to enter the room.
But you were still apprehensive.
“That’s cool, but I need to go, honestly I’m fine.” you lied as you felt the pain in your limbs and wound just seem to get stronger, the pain meds were fading away and your body was just starting to feel it. “I just really need to get dressed and get to my home before someone starts asking questions,”
“y/n, please,” Spiderman muttered and you felt your whole body trembling just by the way he was saying your name.
It felt too familiar.
“Ms. Stark, I promised to do a quick check-up and maybe give you some pain killers unless you-” she explained but you cut her off.
“Yeah, the pills and the cocaine don’t worry. Just a cover,” you explained and she nodded as her lips formed into a line.
“Okay, so come in, I’ll give you some meds and you can be on your way,” she insisted and you sighed, you looked up to Spiderman for a second.
He quickly straighten his stand as your eyes fell on him and he cleared his throat for a second as he looked at the room and the Doctor. “I’ll go,” he muttered as he turned on his heels.
He must’ve given two or three steps but before you even knew you were speaking, it was almost involuntary.
“Wait,” you said a little bit too loud and Spiderman immediately turned around.
He stared at you and knew you didn’t have to say it.
“Are you sure?” he asked.
Honestly, at first, you didn’t know exactly what to say or exactly what you were asking him. Gosh, you didn’t know him twenty-four hours ago but he had already saved your life and you felt something warm and comforting when you looked at him. Maybe it was the pain or the meds or just the adrenaline, honestly, maybe it could’ve been just you.
“Yeah, I don’t want to be alone,” you replied with a wry smile.
Your whole body was vibrating with nervous energy. Your fingers were ice-cold and your throat was burning hot as you waited for an answer. Was it too weird to ask a stranger to stay with you for a medical check-up? Did you seem too immature?
“Okay,” he muttered as he got closer and walked with you to the room.
The exam was rather fast and Spiderman even held your hand softly when Claire had changed the bandages of your wound and your hand shot up to the side of the bed, your knuckles turning white as you fell in the bed with force. You’d no idea why it hurt so much, you didn’t like also the idea of Claire touching you so roughly to the point that between clenched teeth you muttered that you weren’t super strong and that you didn’t heal quickly like Spiderman. Claire’s eyes widened before she muttered a small sorry and Spiderman chuckled softly before his hand covered yours. You glanced up at him and you nodded thankfully before taking a deep breath and letting her continue her work.
In the meanwhile as she finished, she and Spiderman told you about the ‘Night clinic’, a couple of very private and discrete doctors would take in some of New York’s heroes. Apparently, there were more than just Spiderman, which only made you even more curious because you’d no idea there were more heroes than the ones that you’d known since you were a child.
Soon, Claire was giving you the prescription for the pain meds and antibiotics you needed, you would ask HAPPY to buy them for you as soon as you got to your place. Moreover, she recommended bed rest for at least two weeks, although by the way she was glaring at you when she said it, you knew that she knew that that wasn’t going to happen.
In no time, Claire was gone and you were alone with Spiderman in the room. He watched you silently as you took your suit out of the bag, the black suit had indeed been cut in the torso and it was still soaked in blood. You felt your heart constricting painfully at the memory of Natasha when she gave you the suit and although you knew she had left more on the Compound, it was too painful for you to go back, but you still needed to.
Spiderman turned around as soon as you sighed as you tried to put on your suit anyway, at least that way you would have something to cover your underwear and you wouldn’t be walking half-naked through the main entrance of Stark Tower.
“y/n?” he said. It felt like someone was dragging a finger down the length of your spine. You’d shivered suddenly aware that although you were opposite sides of the bed and although he was looking away, you had little to no clothes on and were in the same room. “You’re going to ask for a car?” he asked.
“That’s the idea and pray that no one notices me,” you replied softly as you breathed out while you tore the robe from your body and place the torn suit on the rest of your body. You sighed relief as you finally zipped it up.
“Do you?” he started but cut himself off. “Uhm, would you be okay if…” he tried again but it seemed like he couldn’t choose the right words and he sighed frustrated with himself. You turned towards him as he managed to let out his words. “I can swing you over there, leave you at your window?” his voice sounded rushed with a little bit of an edge as if he was too nervous to talk to you as if he hadn’t been doing it for hours already.
“Do you want to swing me?”
He turned around hesitantly.
“I can, and you wouldn’t have to put on a bloody suit,” he said softly his head cocked a bit to the side as he pointed at you.
“Are you judging me?” you gasped with a frown.
“What? No,” Spiderman shook his head quickly and you felt like smiling.
“I’m still wearing the bloody suit,” you frowned. “I’m not going to let you swing me in my underwear,” you whispered and Spiderman nodded.
“A shame really,” he replied and your eyes widened, he was sharp and witty and you felt the sides of your lips turning into a smile, and even though you couldn’t see his face, you had a feeling he was smirking.
Spiderman nodded before he walked towards the window of the hospital and opened it, he proceeded to offer you his hand and you swallowed hard. You hesitated but then you gave him your hand, he pulled you into him slowly and softly, and then his hand traveled to the small of your back pulling you incredibly close to him. You felt your breath hitching suddenly as your hands climbed from his chest to the back of his neck and quickly he pulled you up, your legs immediately wrapped around him tightly. You felt hot with the way you were so close to him and a bit embarrassed.
“I’ll go slow,” he told you and you just nodded.
He shot a web and quickly you felt the cool wind of the morning on your body, you curled even more around him when you felt a little bit that you were free-falling but just as he said he would, he swung slowly at an almost lazy pace while he held you close, which caused you to close your eyes and just feel him. He was warm and hot, you noticed, it contrasted too much with the cool air in your body while you hold onto him, there was a searing heat that caused you to shiver. Soon, you nuzzled your face deeper into Spiderman’s neck and held him tighter as you swung through the city, wind whistling around of ears. In part it was in case people saw him carrying someone, you didn’t want anyone seeing your face and the other part was because you felt so good with how he held you.
Soon, he touched down slowly on your window. You weren’t exactly sure how he’d guessed which one was your room but he was aware of where you lived. You didn’t give too much thought as you tapped your earpiece twice and asked HAPPY to open the window next to your bed. The window opened slowly and Spiderman cradled the back of your neck as he led you both into your bed. He let you down slowly and you couldn’t help but think how this looked if someone came in. Both of you were soaked in blood and were on your bed, he was on top of you and you held your breath as you let your imagination run wild.
“Are you okay?” He said when he notice how your cheeks were turning bright red.
“Yes,” you lied as you started to take off your suit, maybe it was the pain meds that were making you so bold but you knew it was just you.
“O-Oh,” Spiderman cleared his throat as soon as he realized and quickly turned around in your room. He stood awkwardly and you couldn’t help but bite your lip as you took slipped the suit from your body and took the sweater you used to sleep on. Then, you climbed into the bed slowly, pulling the covers so he wouldn’t see your underwear.
Not that it mattered after all you’d gone through.
“Thank you for saving my life,” you replied softly and Spiderman finally turned around, leaning in a bit as if getting a better view of you as you started at him from your bed.
“Anytime,” he nodded and before you knew it, he was already moving out the window. Without saying anything and you frowned at his movements.
You didn’t know exactly how you felt after the last few hours. You highly doubted that if you were one hundred percent in your right mind, but god, it just seemed like you couldn’t let it go.
“Hey,” you said and Spiderman turned around just at the edge of the window, he was about to jump but he turned around and suddenly the air felt a bit heavy. You crawled through the bed until you were at the edge of the window and you felt your heart thundering in your chest. You rested your hand on his shoulders softly, feeling the material under your fingertips and then running them through his collarbones. Spiderman didn’t flinch and you were thankful, soon you found the edge of his mask and you felt him tensing up. “I don’t normally do this but I’m really thankful,”
Spiderman let a hesitant breath out and your hands began to tremble as you slide his mask up softly, he didn’t stop you, he simply stayed still. The proximity felt like it was too much and you felt as if your fingers were on fire as you worked softly on his mask. Once the mask was lifted until his mouth you gave a shaky breath, pausing just for a moment while you looked at him. His lips seemed soft and they were pink, he had a nice mouth you thought. Then you grabbed the back of his neck.
Spiderman welcomed the kiss, capturing your lips as his left hand cupped your cheek and pulled you in closer. You whimpered at how his lips were hot against yours, they were plush and fervent to press against yours. The kiss wasn’t sweet or soft, it was frantic and sloppy but it was perfect and all you could think about was him. His lips pressed against yours, his hand holding the back of your neck as he kissed you purposefully and you clung to him desperately.
You suddenly were made aware of how difficult it was to breathe and you finally let go, you were breathing heavily, eyes still closed as you pressed your forehead against his.
“I…” he whispered finally but you pulled down his mask quickly as you bit your lower lip.
“Bye Spiderman,” you replied softly and he shook his head, again, you suspected there was a smirk under his mask and before you knew it, he jumped from the building and leaped into another one.
You sighed as you leaned back into the bed softly and you struggle to place an order on your thoughts, shocked by your desire and that you had actually acted on it. You’d kissed strangers, maybe a lot of strangers in the last few years but you were pretty self-controlled and had never given too much to someone. The desire, everything came usually from them and you simply received it. But that, you didn’t, it wasn’t like anything you could think of, you were unable to put into words what you felt as you pressed his lips against yours.
You smiled mostly to yourself until you heard your phone ringing on the suit that was on the floor, you leaned softly and there was a message.
Peter Parker: Hey, did you get home safe?

Name: Ambrosius Goldenloin
Birthday: August 10th
Age: Early 20′s (Haven’t pinned down an age)
Sexuality: Gay
Star Sign: Leo
Element: Fire
Ruler: Sun
Leo Personality Traits
Strengths: Creative, passionate, generous, warm-hearted, cheerful, humorous
Weaknesses: Arrogant, stubborn, self-centered, lazy, inflexible
“Individuals born under the sign of Leo are known for their natural leadership abilities. They possess qualities such as creativity, self confidence, dominance and a strong presence that is hard to resist. Leos are capable of achieving anything they set their minds to in all aspects of their lives. The strength of a Leo lies in their "king of the jungle" status. They are typically generous and loyal, which enables them to have many friends. Their self confidence and attractiveness make them capable of bringing different groups of people together and leading them towards a common goal. Additionally Leos have a healthy sense of humor which makes it easier for them to collaborate with others.”
“Leo is ruled by the sun, the dazzling celestial body that governs life and vitality. The sun never goes retrograde, and likewise, Leos are renowned for their stability, loyalty, and consistency. They are dedicated friends and lovers who put their hearts into every relationship. (Fittingly, the Leo sign governs the heart.) Lions love to watch their mates succeed — until they feel threatened. They can become impaired by their ego, pride, and jealousy when they start to fear their star power will be eclipsed. It’s important for celestial lions to remember that their light is never obscured by others, and the bright shine of others' success does nothing to their own. Ultimately, Leos' own hubris is the greatest threat to their happiness.”
“This fixed sign is known for its ambition and determination, but above all, Leos are celebrated for their remarkable bravery. In tarot, Leo is represented by the “strength” card, which depicts the divine expression of physical, mental, and emotional fortitude. Fearless optimists who refuse to accept failure, Leos will find their deep wells of courage grow as they mature.”

Parentage: Aeolus Goldenhawk (Father) and Avelina Swiftaxe (Mother)
Relationship with his parents: Almost non-existent. His father was so busy with his duties as Gloreth’s descendant that he barely had time for Ambrosius as a kid. Avelina was swamped too since she was the wife of the descendant of Gloreth, though she made a genuine effort to spend time with him.
As a result, Ambrosius spent most of his childhood alone, and when he wasn’t alone, he was being prepared to step into his father’s shoes, not really understanding how important his ancestry was.  As soon as Ambrosius was old enough to be sent to the institution, he was. Aside from a few visits a year, he hardly ever saw his mother, and his father even less. Other knights knew more about them than he did.
Status: Aeolus is missing and potentially on the other side of the wall, he left due to caving under the pressure of the Gloreth legacy. Avelina was so devastated by this that she threw herself into her work and it killed her when Ambrosius was in his late teens.

The Importance of Supervised Playtime with Toys for Pets in Abu Dhabi
In the bustling city of Abu Dhabi, where pet ownership is on the rise, it's crucial to recognize the significance of supervised playtime with toys for our beloved animal companions. Whether you have a playful pup or a curious kitty, providing them with adequate stimulation and engagement is essential for their physical health, mental well-being, and overall happiness.
Tumblr media
Cat Toys and Dog Toys: Tailored Entertainment for Feline and Canine Companions
Cats and dogs have unique needs when it comes to playtime, and providing them with the right toys can make all the difference. For our feline friends, toys that mimic natural prey, such as feather wands, laser pointers, and interactive puzzles, are ideal for stimulating their hunting instincts and keeping them mentally sharp.
On the other hand, dogs thrive on toys that cater to their innate behaviors, such as fetching, chewing, and problem-solving. Rope toys, squeaky toys, and treat-dispensing puzzles are excellent choices for keeping dogs entertained and engaged while also promoting physical activity and dental health.
The Benefits of Supervised Playtime
Supervised playtime with toys offers a multitude of benefits for pets in Abu Dhabi. Firstly, it helps prevent boredom and destructive behavior, particularly in indoor pets who may not have access to outdoor stimulation. By providing them with interactive toys, pet owners can keep their furry companions mentally stimulated and prevent issues like excessive chewing, scratching, or aggression.
Additionally, supervised playtime strengthens the bond between pets and their owners. Engaging in interactive play sessions not only provides physical exercise but also fosters trust and communication between humans and animals. It's a time for both parties to connect, have fun, and build a stronger relationship.
Furthermore, supervised playtime with toys is essential for promoting physical health and preventing obesity in pets. In a city like Abu Dhabi, where hot temperatures can limit outdoor activities, indoor play sessions offer a safe and enjoyable alternative for pets to burn off excess energy and maintain a healthy weight.
Pet Day Care and Pet Grooming Salon: Enhancing the Play Experience
For pet owners with busy schedules or those seeking additional support in providing supervised playtime, pet day care and pet grooming salons in Abu Dhabi offer invaluable services. These facilities provide a safe and stimulating environment where pets can socialize, exercise, and engage in supervised play under the supervision of trained professionals.
Pet day care centers often feature designated play areas equipped with a variety of toys and interactive games tailored to meet the needs of different breeds and personalities. Moreover, these facilities may offer enrichment activities such as agility courses, sensory play, and even swimming sessions for water-loving pets.
In addition to supervised playtime, pet grooming salons play a vital role in maintaining the overall health and well-being of pets. Regular grooming not only keeps pets looking their best but also prevents skin issues, matting, and other health problems. Many grooming salons in Abu Dhabi incorporate playtime into their services, allowing pets to enjoy some fun and relaxation before or after their grooming sessions.
Choosing the Right Toys for Your Pet
Selecting the appropriate cat toys or dog toys for your pet is essential to ensure their safety and enjoyment during playtime. When choosing dog toys or cat toys, consider their size, age, and preferences. For example, kittens may enjoy small, lightweight toys that they can chase and bat around, while older cats may prefer interactive puzzles or toys filled with catnip to stimulate their senses.
Similarly, when selecting toys for dogs, consider their breed, energy level, and chewing habits. For active breeds like Border Collies or Labrador Retrievers, durable toys that can withstand rough play and chewing are ideal, such as rubber balls or sturdy rope toys. For smaller breeds or those who are gentler in their play, softer toys like plush animals or squeaky toys may be more suitable.
It's also essential to rotate your pet's toys regularly to prevent boredom and keep them engaged. Introducing new toys and rotating them in and out of their playtime routine can help maintain their interest and prevent toys from becoming stale. Additionally, always supervise your pet during playtime, especially with toys that contain small parts or potential choking hazards.
Promoting Socialization and Mental Stimulation
In addition to physical exercise, supervised playtime with toys also promotes socialization and mental stimulation in pets. For dogs, interactive play sessions provide opportunities for social interaction with other dogs and humans, helping them develop essential social skills and reducing the risk of behavioral issues like anxiety or aggression.
Similarly, interactive toys and puzzles challenge pets' cognitive abilities and problem-solving skills, keeping their minds sharp and engaged. For example, puzzle feeders or treat-dispensing toys encourage pets to work for their food, providing mental stimulation while also preventing rapid eating and promoting healthy digestion.
Conclusion
Supervised playtime with toys is a fundamental aspect of pet care in Abu Dhabi. By providing pets with the right toys and engaging them in supervised play sessions, pet owners can promote their physical health, mental stimulation, and overall happiness. Additionally, pet day care centers and grooming salons play a crucial role in enhancing the play experience and ensuring that pets receive the attention and care they deserve. So, whether you have a frisky feline or a spirited canine, remember the importance of supervised playtime for your beloved pet's well-being.

Pawsitively Healthy: A Comprehensive Guide to Dog Health Fitness
Ensuring the health and fitness of our beloved canine companions is a responsibility that every pet owner should take seriously. From proper nutrition to regular exercise and preventive care, there are numerous factors to consider when it comes to keeping our dogs happy and healthy. In this comprehensive guide, we'll delve deeper into the various aspects of dog health and fitness, providing valuable insights and practical tips to help you maintain your furry friend's well-being.
Tumblr media
Understanding Nutritional Needs : Proper nutrition lays the foundation for good health in dogs. As responsible pet owners, it's essential to understand the nutritional needs of our canine companions. Dogs require a balanced diet consisting of protein, carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, and minerals to thrive. Opt for high-quality dog food that is specifically formulated to meet the nutritional requirements of your dog's age, size, and breed. Avoid feeding table scraps or excessive treats, as these can lead to obesity and other health issues. Consult with your veterinarian to determine the best diet plan for your dog and make adjustments as needed.
Importance of Regular Exercise : Regular exercise is vital for maintaining your dog's physical and mental well-being. Daily walks, play sessions, and interactive games not only help to keep your dog physically fit but also provide mental stimulation and prevent boredom. Aim for at least 30 minutes to an hour of exercise each day, depending on your dog's age, breed, and energy level. Consider incorporating activities such as hiking, swimming, or agility training to add variety to your dog's exercise routine. Remember to adjust the intensity and duration of exercise based on your dog's individual needs and abilities.
Preventive Veterinary Care : Routine veterinary care is essential for preventing and detecting health issues in dogs. Schedule regular wellness exams with your veterinarian to assess your dog's overall health and address any concerns. Keep up with vaccinations, parasite prevention, and dental care to protect your dog from common illnesses and maintain optimal health. Additionally, be vigilant for any signs of illness or changes in behavior, as early detection is key to successful treatment. Establishing a strong relationship with your veterinarian ensures that your dog receives the best possible care throughout their life.
Mental Stimulation and Enrichment : In addition to physical exercise, mental stimulation is crucial for keeping your dog's mind sharp and engaged. Provide your dog with plenty of opportunities for enrichment, such as puzzle toys, interactive games, and training sessions. Engage in activities that tap into your dog's natural instincts and behaviors, such as scent work, agility, or obedience training. Rotate toys regularly to keep your dog's interest piqued and prevent boredom. A mentally stimulated dog is not only happier but also less likely to develop behavioral issues such as excessive barking or destructive chewing.
Monitoring and Adjusting for Individual Needs : Every dog is unique, with their own set of health requirements and preferences. Pay close attention to your dog's individual needs and adjust their care regimen accordingly. Monitor their weight, body condition, and energy levels regularly, and consult with your veterinarian if you notice any changes or concerns. By staying proactive and responsive to your dog's needs, you can ensure that they live a long, healthy, and fulfilling life by your side.
Conclusion : Maintaining the health and fitness of your dog requires dedication, commitment, and love. By providing a balanced diet, regular exercise, preventive veterinary care, and mental stimulation, you can help your furry friend thrive.
