(Also this gif is so cute but it makes me want to cry knowing the short moments that follow 😭)
*RING* *RING*
You picked the phone up and held it to your ear with your shoulder as you scribbled runes and incantations into your leatherbound journal “Hello? L/n residence” You said absent mindedly and briefly placed your pen down to look over at the texts you were studying.
“Uhm, I would like to speak with the mage called Y/n please” a weary male voice spoke through the phone, this piqued your interest, prompting you to set your pen down and fully acknowledge the conversation.
“That would be me, now who is this?” You questioned leaning on your hand, you had not been known as a mage in many decades.
“T-this is Alex Burgess, you knew my father Rod-”
“-Erick Burgess, yes I do, he is the man to have captured a demon in his basement,” you said more to yourself than the man on the phone “He has asked many favors of me in the past, what is the meaning of this call?” You inquired Alex about his business with you.
“If you would miss, I was hoping you would come out to help me with something, a spell, if you will” His voice, was desperate
Now he truly had you hooked, what would a Megas's son need with a mage? Was he not magically endowed himself? “What sort of spell is it?” you were already running through thousands of possibilities but unfortunately the only answer that Alex gave, brought much disappointment.
“I'm afraid I can tell you no more until you arrive,” He said hastily, “Does this mean you will come?” His voice had a boyish hopefulness to it that made your lips quirk up in a slight smile.
“Yes, just tell me where I need to be and I will travel as quick as the crow flies,” you said, your curiosity sending you into a daydream of what the man could want.
You let out a breath of relief as you pulled into the gravel driveway of the Burgess manor it was late in the evening which basked the manor in an eerie light. You stepped out of the taxi and walked up the creaky steps, rapping on the old wooden door. You stood for a moment before a kind eyed old man opened the door “Well hello, please come in! My name is paul, and you must be Y/n yes?” He asked with a sweet smile and you nodded, returning it.
“Yes, that is me. It's lovely to meet you Paul” You said and he nodded, leading you to a study where an old man sat perched in a wheelchair by a window. “You must be Alex Burgess” Your words startled him as he jumped slightly and looked in your direction.
“Yes, yes come in, please” You nodded and allowed some of his help to take your bags, sitting in a cushioned chair he kept in his office. He chuckled and examined your youthful form “I'll be honest, I was expecting someone older, my age perhaps,” he joked and you shifted a bit awkwardly.
“Haha yeah… sooo about this spell, what is it?” You cut right to the point, you couldn't lie, the question had been eating you alive for the entire week it took for you to prepare and travel to the Burgess manor.
Alex seemed to stiffen at the mention of your coming here, wordlessly Paul walked behind him and started to wheel him out of the room, and you followed blindly, Paul helped Alex down steep concrete steps and into a cold damp basement.
The breath was stolen from your lungs as you laid eyes upon a glass sphere, and inside was a man, who had raven hair and sickly pale skin. He remained still and silent in his glass prison, his eyes closed in a false peace. Paul and Alex stood back as you approached the wondrous thing before you, while you had worked with Roderick Burgess in the past he had neither confirmed nor denied the rumor of the demon in his basement, not even to you.
But this man did not look like a demon, in fact, he looked to be the opposite, he seemed to be crafted by the hands of gods themselves, when you came within reach of the orb you placed a curious hand on the glass, causing the being inside to look up at you. In his eyes you swear you could see the whole cosmos, but past that you could see a human like being. “So the rumors are true…” you muttered
Behind the beauty, in his silvery blue eyes, you could see the faintest amount of curiosity as he looked from you to the firmly planted hand on the glass. When you snapped out of the childish trance the man had captured you in you whipped around to face the old men and the guards who were watching your every movement.
Your face contorted in disgust and disdain “What is the meaning of this, Alex Burgess? Why do you bring me here under false pretenses and show me this man you keep locked in here like some trophy!?” Your disgust was immeasurable as you turned fully to the men.
“Your mistaken mage, I did not bring you here under false pretenses, I brought you here to cast a spell that would bind this basement shut, and I do not keep him like a trophy! He has refused to speak for over a century! All he had to do was promise not to hurt us and he could be free!” Alex tried to argue his case but you already had all the information you needed.
Your lip curled in disgust “And how do you expect me to bar this being in your basement when I don't even know what he is?” You questioned and he faltered.
“It's a being more powerful than gods, my father called it ‘Dream of the endless’ it wasn't even the one my father wanted to capture in the first place, please we were just scared that it would hurt us, we never wanted to keep it here, we just wanted to be safe” Alex sighed and spoke more calmly.
Dream of the Endless, a being greater than gods? And yet here he was, trapped for over a century in glass confinement, all because some mortals got greedy and scared?
Your stomach churned at the thought of keeping him locked in here for as long as the foundation of this house stood. You gnawed on the inside of your cheek in thought, briefly glancing over your shoulder to look at the Endless, his eyes were still trained on your figure, but his brow was slightly furrowed as if deep in thought himself.
“Please, this is our last result. We just want to be happy,” Paul pleaded and he clutched his lover's hand.
You inhaled a deep breath and stepped away from the glass sphere, feeling overwhelmed at the moral dilemma. “I need to think…” you muttered and crossed the room to stand in front of Alex and Paul “If you would be so kind as to show me my room, I'm exhausted from travel. I certainly could not perform such magic in my current state,” you stated and they both nodded, understanding. You followed as Paul helped Alex up the steps.
As you walked through the iron gate you looked back at Dream, whose demeanor had changed from when you had first walked into the basement before it was curiosity, now it was cold. You couldn't get rid of this looming feeling of despair.
Your sleep was restless that night, tossing and turning and unable to get rid of the image of him sitting in there for gods know how long, it was early in the morning before you finally rolled out of bed, deciding that a cup of water might help ease your troubled mind.
The house was quiet as everyone was asleep, you padded downstairs and into the old creaky kitchen, rifling through the cabinets to find a glass to quell your thirst. Your fingers bounced in thought, did you really want to do this? If you helped Alex then when the Dream King finally did escape you would be the only one alive for him to seek revenge on, and quite frankly you did not want to piss off one of the Endless.
You had read about the Endless a few decades ago, they were exactly as they were named, endless beings more powerful than gods, created by Father Time and Mother Night, Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delerium.
You had met Death once, it was a long time ago but you remembered her kind smile, she was the reason you were still walking the earth today. You leaned on the counter in thought, remembering the deal you struck with her to gain your immortality.
Thinking about Death made you wonder why Dream’s siblings had not come to help him, the rumors of his predicament surely had to have reached the other Endless- of course, they had. You wanted to slap yourself, they knew what happened to him, and they were afraid that if they tried to come to his aid they would end up just like him. Your gut twisted in sorrow for him, abandoned by his siblings and made prisoner by the humans he was supposed to bring extravagant dreams to.
You finished off the glass and placed it delicately in the sink, padding back into the hall and stopping at the bottom step. You looked down the wall to the door that lead into the basement and heard a small voice in your head telling you to descend the stairs and gaze upon the ethereal being trapped like an animal.
Ignoring the pounding in your chest, you approached the basement door, there was a brief moment after you wrapped your hand around the brass knob where you considered turning and returning to your room, waking tomorrow, and just doing the damned spell. But instead, you pushed the door open and carried on down into the damp room, The Endless sat just as he did when you had last seen him earlier, elbows resting on his knees and arms crossed over his lap, in an effort to preserve his dignity.
One of the guards had gotten up to meet you at the gate, and you watched as his face was overtaken with confusion. “I apologize but I can't allow you to enter, Mr. Burgess doesn't allow any house guests down here alone, you’ll have to come back in the morning-” He tried to deter you but you stayed firm, giving him a hard glare.
“Mr. Burgess knows I’m down here, in fact, you both can go home, I've come to prepare my spell and it would be in your best interest to not be present unless you wanna be stuck in here with him for eternity,” you nodded past him to the Endless, who stared at you with a fierce glare. The man opened the gate and allowed you to step inside while he and his partner scurried to gather their things and leave the basement. You were honestly surprised he believed you, you were still in your pajamas and had none of your arcana with you.
Once left alone you shifted awkwardly on your feet, the cold concrete uncomfortable against your bare feet. His head cocked to the side as he watched you wearily approach, your eyes trained on the gold binding circle as you walked across the room to stand on the small water surrounded square of concrete where the circle was laid. His glare was unnerving as you crouched and ran a finger lightly over the binding circle and lifted it to see a slight residue on your fingertips.
She looked up at him and was almost taken aback by the mix of curiosity and pure displeasure, “Don't look at me like that, I don't actually plan on locking you down here, I'm just trying to actually get a plan together before someone realizes what I'm actually doing down here” You said and stood up with a sigh, knocking on the glaze to try and gauge just how much force would be needed to break it.
Dream’s jaw clenched and unclenched as you stared at him with a sour look on your face, you looked over your shoulder to the desk that the night guards had hastily abandoned, you looked at your hand and determined you definitely couldn't even crack the glass if you simply punched it. So you crossed the room to the desk and pulled the small lamp off of it, yanking the cord out of the wall, you turned on your heel and raised your arm over your head, and flung the lap right at the orb of glass.
Dream lurched back in surprise as the lamp collided with the glass, causing cracks to spiderweb outwards from the point of impact, but not enough to fully breakthrough through. His eyes were wide in disbelief as he stared at the damaged glass. You hurriedly walked back over and started to rub the gold runes etched on the floor with your foot while pressing a hand on the glass and giving the distraught Endless a slight smile “I'm sure you can take it from here yeah? Just one thing before I get the hell out of here though” you glanced down to see that you had rubbed a good chunk of the golden binding away.
“Just give me a few minutes to get properly out of here before you bust out of this joint, I’d rather not be around for what happens when you do break this glass cage,” you said with a light chuckle while walking back across the room watching as he shifted up onto his knees to properly examine the damage you’d done to not only the spell that kept his powers at bay but also the glass that kept him confined here.
He looked back up at you, his brows pinched together, so curious as to why you were different than all the other humans that visited the basement during the over a hundred years the Burgess’s had kept him bound here. He watched as your form retreated and disappeared from the basement and listened as the floors creaked above him, he didn't understand why but he sat there on his knees for several minutes until the house was encompassed in silence.
Meaning you were gone, and that he could finally escape this hellish place after over a century.
And he was correct, after you disappeared from the basement you had rushed as quietly as possible upstairs to gather the little items you had brought with you, then booked it out of the house not wanting to wait around to see how royally pissed the Endless would be when it fully registered to him that he was no longer bound to that glass case.
You felt light despite the fear that he might also want to knock heads with you, deep in your soul you knew that you had done the right thing by aiding in his escape, and a little voice in the back of your head assured you that he would be more inclined to spare you for not sealing him in the basement.
You were able to catch a ride back to the city where you could rent a car to get you back home, opting for it better than getting cabs all the way back as you had on the way over, you don't remember when but some days after you had arrived back in the safety of your apartment you had seen that Alex had caught a severe case of the sleepy sickness, and you had nothing but pleasant dreams every time you slept.
You had an inkling that both were work of the sandman.

Ok but the look both Dream and Lucienne share in this scene when Rose pulls out a heart full of vortex in the same shape and form as his younger siblings sigil.
And this is before unity mentions the gold eyes!
The look of realisation mixed with utter dread/apprehension. He must have felt so betrayed in that brief moment of clarity.
This boy is done with his siblings bull shit!

The queen of the dreaming
Pairing: Morpheus/dream x fem reader
Fandom: The Sandman
Word count: 2000
Warnings: Mentions of death
My first fanfic. Please be kind. I wanted to write a fanfic where the reader is a vortex and eventually becomes queen of dreaming.
You were a lonesome soul. You had always struggled to make friends. Regardless you had your books and your records. Everything you could hope for in your little apartment. You even had a few plants too.
You worked in a small coffee shop just round the corner from your place, it wasn’t the best job ever but now that you’d finished college you’d finally been able to say yes to your managers constant nagging about whether you can work more hours or not.
Just lately when falling asleep your dreams had been strange. You kept entering the dreams of your neighbours or even some of your coworkers. Sometimes you ended up wandering through beautiful grasslands and in the distance you could see a palace. You ventured towards the beautiful building and were able to enter with ease. The guardians outside did not seem to notice you as you strolled through the entrance.
Wandering the empty hallways you wondered where everyone was. Eventually happening upon a beautiful library. The books were very unusual. They all had different names written across the spines. No titles just presumably authors names. Perhaps they were autobiographies you thought to yourself. As you flicked through some of them you found they were all rather unique and interesting as they detailed the lives of the person whose name was on each cover.
Suddenly you heard someone clear their throat.
“Can I help you?” A voice sounded from behind you causing you to spin round, wide eyed and shocked. The person before you wore glasses, a smart suit and held a small pile of books under their arm.
“Uhm no, sorry! Just browsing.” You stammered nervously.
“Well this isn’t a public library. How did you get in here?”
They took a few steps forward and you turned and hurried away.
“My apologies! I’ll leave right away!”
As you panicked and ran you felt a strange rumbling from below you. Your fear increased and the rumbling got worse. Debris and rocks began to fall from the walls and ceiling causing you to stagger and fall sideways. Eventually you covered your ears and hunched over, terrified at the sounds around you.
Thankfully you soon woke up. Sweating and shaken you still felt your heart racing. What a frightening dream you thought to yourself! For the remaining hours you lay there feeling deeply unsettled until you had to get ready for work.
“I had the weirdest dream last night.”
Tom your coworker began speaking as you began making a coffee for a customer.
“Oh yea?” You were still dazed and out of it. Constantly thinking about last nights dream.
“Yeah I was walking through a beautiful meadow and looking over at this palace in the distance. It was all rather tranquil until we were suddenly hit by this huge earthquake. The palace began crumbling and parts of it were falling everywhere.
“Jesus Tom.”
“Yeah I know right?”
“I had the same dream.”
“Wait what?” He looked stunned by this revelation but before he could say more you made sure to hand the coffee to the customer who was waiting at the bar.
“Black coffee?” You smiled as you passed it over to the man who was patiently waiting for his drink.
“Thank you.” He said in a solemn tone as he fixed his eyes upon you for a few moments.
Assuming he wanted an answer you quickly glanced his way and responded.
“You’re welcome. Have a nice day!”
You didn’t really look at the man properly. You vaguely saw that he was wearing all black but you chose to ignore this as you turned to begin talking to Tom in detail about your dream.
Later that night not long after falling asleep you awoke to a tall dark figure with glowing eyes stood in the corner of your room. You jumped backwards in horror at the shape, thinking it some sort of demon. You drew the bed covers up close to your chest, hiding your body for all you had on was a little silk nightdress.
“Who-who are you?” You asked as your voice betrayed you, showing how truly frightened you were.
“(Y/n), I am Morpheus, King of dreams and I’ve been observing you.”
The figure spoke in a soft caressing voice as he stepped forward, revealing that he was a rather handsome young man. You swallowed at the sight of his beautiful paleness as the moonlight shone through the gap in the curtains, onto his face.
“Why are you here?”
Could he really be who he says he is you thought, or was this all some cruel joke by a creepy stalker.
“I have come because you are causing a disturbance within the dreaming.”
Again his deep yet gentle voice spoke out and you were captivated by him.
“A disturbance? What do you mean?”
You must still be dreaming, this was too bizarre to even be real.
“(Y/n) you are a dream vortex. You pose a threat not only to the dreaming but even to the waking world.”
“What? What are you talking about?“
“Dream vortexes usually need to be dealt with before they destroy everything.”
“I’ve done nothing though. I’m not harming anyone. Please just leave me alone!”
The more stressed you became the more Morpheus felt the dreaming quake as you panicked.
He should destroy you here and now. After all that is what he came here to do. But looking at your face he took pity. Your sweet doe eyes gazing up at him as your face was filled with fear. It saddened him that you felt threatened by his presence. This was not what he wanted.
Perhaps there was a another way to solve this which didn’t result in your destruction.
“Very well.” Morpheus did not wish to upset you any further and risk destroying the dreaming so he left. Leaving you fearful and confused.
When he returned to the dreaming Lucienne quickly approached him.
“Is it done?”
Morpheus strode passed her without saying a word.
“My lord!?” She demanded an answer as she hurried after him.
“No.” Came his response as he frowned, looking deep in thought.
He stopped and stood with his back to Lucienne as Matthew came and landed next to them.
“You didn’t destroy the vortex?” Matthew asked.
Before Morpheus could speak Lucienne began.
“My lord that thing is a threat to all of us. It’s a weapon of destruction that will bring about the end of the dreaming along with the waking world!”
“That thing, Lucienne, has a name.”
Morpheus spun round, looking very stern as he spoke.
“Her name is (y/n) and I do not believe she is a large enough threat to be destroyed so soon.”
Morpheus felt somewhat protective of you now that he spoke. He wasn’t sure what had come over him but he was not about to end your life so quickly. Despite what you were he wanted to get to know you a little better.
After the dream king had visited you you had struggled to sleep. Feeling very unsettled and panicked over the whole ordeal. First off what even was he? Some sort of demon? Secondly how could you be a threat that needs to be destroyed? It made no sense.
Regardless you carried on your days as usual until eventually one evening after work tiredness got the better of you and you fell into a deep sleep.
You awoke within the palace, in a grand bed covered in black silk sheets. Peering around you as the light poured in through the tall windows you spotted the door to which you hopped out of bed and strolled towards.
Once outside the bed chamber you managed to regain your bearings from when you were last here. As you wandered the hallways you made sure to avoid the library so as not to be scolded this time by the librarian.
Wandering into the throne room you looked up the beautiful staircase towards the throne. How grand it all looked. You spun around as your eyes gazed at the decorative carved stone pillars which held up the ceiling.
“Are you enjoying the palace?”
The sudden interruption caused you to turn around suddenly to see the dream king himself, staring at you with a hint of intrigue upon his face.
“This is the throne room, where I spend most of my time when I am not visiting the waking world.”
“I-I’m sorry, I should go.”
You panicked once more, feeling as if you were intruding and unwelcome there.
“No please, stay. You are welcome in my palace (y/n).”
He felt a stab of worry that you might take flight and run any moment so he took a few slow steps towards you.
“I thought I was meant to be dangerous. A threat to everyone else. Wasn’t that what you said.”
He watched you carefully for a moment. Contemplating his words, not wishing to say anything which might upset you.
“Dream vortexes are incomprehensible. Usually they are dangerous to everyone around them. But currently you do not appear to be doing anyone any harm.”
He continued to edge towards you.
Eventually he got close enough to offer his arm which took you by surprise.
“Please, allow me to show you around my palace.”
You delicately took his arm, feeling the soft fabric of his coat against your fingertips which made you feel warm.
You couldn’t deny he was quite the gentleman, sweet and polite as he lead you around. Showing you the many rooms and hallways.
When you got to the library you fell very silent. Worrying that your presence would anger the librarian.
“Lucienne, this is our guest (y/n).” Morpheus announced with a certain pride to his voice.
Lucienne looked up from a large book she was examining and nodded politely to you before turning away and continuing to read.
Once you were out of ear shot you whispered to Morpheus.
“I don’t think your librarian likes me very much.”
He smiled.
“Lucienne has a job to do and does it well but social skills were never her strong point.”
You smiled at him, happy he was showing you around his palace.
The two of you stopped on a balcony overlooking the kingdom, taking in the splendour of everything around you. The wind blew your hair back, exposing your bare shoulders as you were once more wearing only your silk nightdress.
“Can I ask you something?” You spoke softly as you turned to look at the man next to you who quickly averted his eyes which had inherently found themselves roaming towards your exposed shoulders.
“Of course.” He turned to face you fully.
“How am I a threat to the world? I don’t feel as if I’m doing anything terrible to anyone.”
Morpheus looked sympathetic as he spoke.
“Dream vortexes have the power to travel through and manipulate the dreams of other people. Along with breaking down the barrier between the dreaming and the real world.”
“But what if there was a way I could control it?”
He thought for a moment before you continued.
“Vortexes must have a purpose surely? They can’t just be made at random.”
“I do not understand their purpose-“
“Because you dealt with them before they had a chance to learn to control their abilities!”
You couldn’t help but desperately interrupt him to which he looked slightly surprised by.
You stepped closer to him, reaching out to firmly grab his arm which caused him to tense as you looked deeply into his beautiful grey eyes.
“Please Morpheus, help me control it.”
His heart melted at the sight of your beautiful large eyes staring up into his.
How beautiful you looked in that moment to him. So beautiful in fact that he could never say no to you.
“I shall try.”
He couldn’t say anything else. He knew it would be almost impossible to control your powers but in that moment he’d do anything for you.
“I think it’s time for you to wake up now (y/n).”
Morpheus bid you farewell as the realm faded around you and you were alone in your bed once more.
You lay there for the remaining hours your head filled with worries of what your future might hold for you should you fail to control yourself.
Meanwhile Morpheus stood on the balcony while thoughts of you flooded his mind. The firmness of your touch. The way you looked at him in desperation, the fact you wanted his help, the feeling that you needed him. Everything caused his heart to beat a little faster as he stood there in silence.

I still thought it was too little what the Dream did to that scrawny, wretched author. I get Calliope wanted to move on, I really do. But I also think he should get to throw that bitch off the roof. As a little treat.

You took your peaceful dreams as a sign that Dream wasn’t mad at you for being hired to seal him in a basement for as long as the foundation of the house stood. While out and about doing work, you started to notice a raven just about every time you left your house. Every time you did you felt the hairs on the back of your neck stand up, it's not like you didn’t like ravens, you believed they brought good fortune. Yet, whenever you saw them recently you couldn’t help the way your gut twisted in nervousness when you noticed them perched around your apartment.
It was a few months after your debacle at the Burgess manor when you had sleeping trouble. You had awoken early that morning to start a long busy day of work and were up later than usual. But when you finally did try to enter the land of dreams, you could not.
You’d laid in bed in silence and darkness for about an hour and a half before you got up and decided to make a cup of tea, in hopes it would help you sleep. But even as you sat on your couch sipping at the warm drink, your eyelids did not droop, and your muscles did not tingle. You had felt more awake than ever actually.
After staring at the wall for several long and boring moments you looked out the window where rain had started to patter outside. Your body went ridged as a pair of yellow glowering eyes stared back at you from the fire escape. As you shifted off the couch and toward the window. The cat had stood and started trotting out of view of the window, toward where the fire escape reached your bedroom.
You rushed through your tiny apartment and crossed the threshold of your dark room, to be met with a pair of sparkling eyes in the blackness, except instead of being on the floor, at the head level of a cat. They stood taller than you, not by much, but certainly more than a feline.
Your breath hitched as thunder boomed through the city, your first instinct was to grab something to defend yourself with, but you stood frozen as the eyes approached you. You gawked as he stepped from the shadows into the beam of light coming in from your now cracked open window. It was him, Dream of the Endless.
Excitement and nerves bubbled in your throat, what did he want? Why was he here? Your eyes examined his form, he wore a black T-shirt and jeans, with the same colored pair of boots and had his hands stuffed deep into the pockets of a trench coat, also black. His hair was in the same disarray as when he was trapped, you figured it was the way he liked it.
His face was hard, brows furrowed and lips pursed like he had been sucking on a lemon. Yet a sparkle in his eyes carried curiosity.
“W-what do you want?” your voice was weary as you shrunk into yourself, you watched as his features softened and he gave you a smile of gratitude.
“Fear not mage, I have no resentment toward you” His voice was different than you had expected it to be. The type of voice that would make millions in the audiobook department, one that soothed the knots in your shoulders and made your head fuzzy with fatigue. “How could I?” He stepped closer to you, so close that if he stepped to you again he would be chest to chest with you. He lifted his hand out of his pocket but hesitated and dropped it to his side.
“Then why have you come?” You asked and shifted on the balls of your feet, looking up at him with childish awe. He was breathtaking like this, his glassy skin shone in the filtered moonlight, and you could pick up on every slight micro expression on his face.
The corners of his mouth lifted ever so slightly as his eyelids fell shut and he dropped gracefully to kneel before you. Morpheus was a prideful being, but being imprisoned for over a century was truly humbling to him, he owed you eternally for what you did for him.
You could have left him there, worse, bound him there for creator knows how long. When he heard Alex’s demands, he damn near expected you too. And yet, you hadn’t hesitated to come to his aid once the house fell asleep, and you hadn’t asked anything in return.
You were truly remarkable, it had taken all of his willpower to not come and see you immediately after he had recovered his tools to properly thank you. Matthew was his next best option, and eventually, he couldn’t take it anymore, he had to see you in the waking world and pay his respects.
Now standing here before you in your moonlit bedroom, he was like a worshipper to the ancient gods.
Your face flushed as you watched him kneel before you and hang his head like a child caught in the cookie jar. “I- what are you d-doing?” your heart pounded in your ears as the godlike being in your home looked up at you with a face filled with gratitude.
“Thanking the witch who freed me from my prison, as I should have many months ago,” he said regretfully, and you watched as his lips pursed in shame. This caused you to hesitantly grip his shoulders and try and get him to stand with you again, but he stayed firm on the floor.
“No, lord Dream please don’t, you didn’t-” you said as you tugged on his coat, but he placed a chilly hand on his shoulder, over yours, and shook his head slightly.
“Morpheus, my name is Morpheus, I will not have you address me as superior when I owe you an eternities debt” He spoke firmly, but not in a manner to upset you.
“Okay okay! But please Morpheus stand up, you don’t owe me anything really” You said and watched as he looked up at you with novelty, but slowly rose to stand within a mere foot from you.
“You misunderstand mage, I do owe you-” He tried to reason but you didn’t let him, by gripping his sleeve and smiling up at him.
“No Morpheus you don’t, the lovely dreams the past few months have been payment enough, I was simply doing what any right minded person would do. There’s no need for any ‘eternal debt’ or whatever, just knowing you’re okay, and that humanity doesn’t have to suffer anymore sleepy sickness is enough for me” You spoke softly and watched as he gently gripped the wrist that had a hold on his sleeve, turning it over carefully in his calloused hands.
Morpheus examined every inch of your face, he wondered what kind of deal with the fates he made long ago that might have brought you through his path, but he didn’t care.
You infatuated him, you weren’t like humans, you didn’t use your powers as a witch against people, you didn’t exploit your immortality, and you freed an Endless being, simply out of the kindness of your heart.
“Even centuries of sweet dreams could not convey my gratitude to you” His voice was calm and peaceful, pulling a yawn from your throat, which caused Morpheus’s jaw to clench momentarily.
He felt a bit guilty for being the cause of your inability to sleep tonight, he had intended to speak with you much earlier in the evening, but he was caught up watching as you did mundane tasks around your house, and the small projects you’d put off, he just lost track of time.
He cleared his throat and released your hand, trying to compose himself, your eyes closed as you gave him a genuine smile. “As I said, you don’t need to give me anything because I don’t want anything” you tried to assure him, but his face was set in a state of immense concentration.
He tried to think of what Lucienne might advise him to do, he understood that he’s not very good at expressing himself the way he intends to. He simply looked over your face watching the tiredness overtake your features.
“How about this hm? I go to bed, and we can talk more tomorrow yeah?” You said drowsily and swayed in your spot, feeling the sounds of pattering rain and the presence of Morpheus finally lull your exhausted mind towards sleep.
This prompted Morpheus to place his steady hands onto your biceps and gently tug you toward your messy bed. He gently laid your finally tired form into the comforts of your bedding and watched as you snuggled into your plush pillow.
He hovered by your nightstand as you adjusted and got comfortable, before looking up at him and smiling softly “goodnight Morpheus” you mumbled as your eyes fell closed.
A soft smile graced his features as he stared at your stilled form. “Goodnight mage…” he uttered quietly and pulled a soft sheet over you.
“It’s Y/n…” you muttered so quietly that he almost didn’t hear, but his smile widened in acknowledgment. As he let out a breath of a laugh.
“Goodnight then… Y/n” he said and left you to your dreams, assuring that they were especially wonderful as you snoozed away that night, it’s safe to say he was properly infatuated with you.

The queen of the dreaming part 2
Pairings: Morpheus x fem reader
Fandom: The Sandman
Warnings: Mentions of bullying, blood, mentions of death. Fluff.
Word count: 2600
Tumblr media
Authors note: I know it’s kinda cringe and it’s a bit of a slow burner but there will be a smutty part 3. Also I haven’t had time to proof read this. I’m sorry!
You had been trying your best to control your abilities as a vortex. Taking some much needed time off work to give yourself space from other people. You had dreamed you were walking through a field where your neighbours were having a picnic, however they all began arguing about the noises that came from one another’s apartments to which you attempted to use your abilities to make them stop by sending each of them home. You then dreamed you were at work and your manager was shouting at Tom in front of the customers causing him to begin smashing up half the coffee shop in retaliation. Why were people so aggressive in your dreams you wondered. Were you causing them to be this way? Regardless you were able to fill them both with remorse causing them to apologise and make up for their actions.
As you were about to leave a voice spoke up behind you.
“Well done (y/n). It looks like you’re learning to control your abilities better than I anticipated.”
You were a little startled as your heart skipped a beat at the sight of him before you.
“Morpheus! I didn’t know you were watching.”
You brushed your hair back behind your ear nervously at the thought he could of been there the whole time.
“I am always watching.”
You blushed at this.
“I’m doing well so far I think. Have I been causing anymore tremors in the dreaming?”
“No.” He smiled with his eyes, displaying a proud look upon his face.
“That’s good.” You were happy you’d been able to make some progress.
“Come.” He said. “Let us venture through the dreams of others and see what you can do.”
He strode towards the staff room door, turning the handle as you both walked through you found yourself walking into a business meeting then a basketball game and even a music lesson.
You used your abilities to improve each dream slightly for the dreamer. The business meeting you changed course so that everything was in favour of the dreamers proposed methods of business. The basketball player began scoring eventually winning the game and lastly the girl playing the piano began playing Chopin so perfectly that her teacher was greatly impressed with her and gave her top marks.
“Very impressive.”
Morpheus smiled at you.
The next dream you walked into was a nightmare. It was of a young girl being bullied by someone older. The bully you recognised was a girl a few years older than her victim. She had blonde hair and a pink t shirt and jeans was shouting at her as she had her cornered in the school bathroom.
You recognised this girl, she’d been in your classes in school and had also bullied you. Seeing her doing this to someone else made you angry.
You clenched your fists at the sight of her causing the room to tremble.
“(Y/n) try to remain calm. Stay focused. Remember what you did earlier.”
Morpheus reassured you but it wasn’t working. You glared at the girl causing her to begin vomiting black blood all over her victim as she then collapsed and began writhing in pain.
The victim then disappeared leaving only the bully on the floor.
“I-I don’t know what happened. I only wanted to make the bully disappear.”
You panicked as you turned back to Morpheus and looked at him worried.
“This isn’t a nightmare. This is her dream, you can’t make her disappear.”
You turned back to look at her but by then stopped writhing and was lay unconscious
“Oh God, what have I done. I’ve killed her haven’t I!?”
“No, you’ve just caused her to fall unconscious.”
Morpheus was trying to speak calmly so as not to frighten you but you were already panicking at the fact you’d harmed someone.
“What’s wrong with me!?”
As you began to panic the room around you broke away in a swirling vortex of debris and destruction.
Morpheus attempted to edge closer to you, wishing to comfort you and calm you down.
“Please, you’ll only get hurt if you come closer.”
You cried when you saw him edging closer worried you would hurt him next.
But to your surprise this didn’t deter him as he finally got to you and wrapped his arms around you from behind.
“Morpheus! Stop, I could hurt you.”
You were so full of fear but the warmth of his strong arms holding you seemed to be calming you.
He buried his face into your soft warm neck.
“You could never hurt me. Please try to calm down. I’m here for you.”
As he held onto you and whispered kind words into your ear the vortex began to slow and finally settle.
He turned you around to face him.
“You did it (y/n). I’m proud of you.”
You looked into his beautiful eyes, swearing you could see galaxies in those grey irises.
“No I hurt someone. This can’t happen again Morpheus.”
“Come with me then. To the dreaming. You can live there, I’ll make sure you’re happy. I promise.”
He cupped your cheek in one of his hands as he looked lovingly into your eyes causing your heart to beat fast once more.
How could you say no to him. You were falling in love with him more and more by the minute.
“Yes Morpheus. Take me. Take me to the dreaming.”
You didn’t remember what happened next, but you awoke in his arms as the evening sun shone through the trees, warming your face. You sat up slowly feeling as if you had been in a deep sleep.
“Where are we?”
You looked around and realised you were both sat on a little wooden bench surrounded by grass, trees and nature. Behind you could hear running water. You looked round to see a beautiful little cottage with a thatched roof and a waterwheel attached. It was beautiful and cosy looking.
“We are in part of the dreaming, this is a pocket realm I made especially for you.” Morpheus spoke softly as he held you carefully in his arms.
“Morphe- I don’t know what to say.” You stammered a bit as you spoke. You were in total disbelief at everything. One moment you were in the midst of havoc the next you were at a peaceful cottage in the countryside.
He smiled and hid a little laugh under his breath.
“What is it?”
“No one’s ever called me Morphey before.”
You blushed as you smiled.
“I didn’t mean-“
“I like it.” He interjected.
“Morphey it is then.” You smiled.
Morpheus stood and offered you his arm.
“Come, let me show you your new home.”
He lead you inside and showed you around. Everything was beautiful. Perfect little kitchen, front room with a warm fire and cosy seating. A large bedroom with a wooden four poster large double bed, with a beautiful tall mirror beside a huge wardrobe and a study room filled with books.
“You’ll find you’ll never be out of fire wood, the kitchen pantry will always remain stocked for you should you wish to cook and you can visit the palace library if you ever run out of books to read.”
He spoke softly as he leaned closer to you, watching your joyful reactions upon your face.
You found yourself cuddle in closely to his arm.
“Morphey it’s perfect!”
“I’m glad it pleases you.”
“But what if I get lonely? Will you come visit?”
You worried now that you’d be dumped here and forgotten about by him.
“I will visit when I can.”
Morpheus said this with a seriousness to his voice. He did not wish to make any promises he couldn’t keep.
However in the coming weeks, no matter how busy he was he always found time to come and see you. He couldn’t keep away no matter how much he tried.
Every time you saw him stalking through the grass you would run out to greet him.
“Morphey!” You’d hug him happily and pull him into your cottage.
You often talked about books you’d been reading, made him food or played card games with him. Sometimes he would even talk about himself but he mostly liked to listen to you.
“(Y/n) I came here today because I’m going to be hosting a masquerade ball at my palace. I wish for you to be there. I shall place an assortment of appropriate clothing in your wardrobe for you to choose from.”
“A ball? I’ve never been to one of those before. How exciting.”
Although you spoke these words you couldn’t help but feel a little nervous about the idea. There wouldn’t be anyone you knew there. You’d surely feel like a bit of an outsider. But if Morpheus wanted you there who were you to say no.
A few days went by and it was time for the ball. How nervous you were but also excited. You had the perfect white ball gown to wear with gold appliqué lace all over the bodice which trailed down onto the skirt. The skirt was voluminous but not too much that it was a hindrance.
You had a white mask also with gold trim which you donned after tying your hair up nicely. Along with this you’d chosen golden jewellery with white opals.
In order to get to the ball all you had to do was imagine the palace in your mind until it appeared in your bedroom mirror and step through to get there. A pretty neat trick and it beat all those times you had to take the bus in the real world.
Walking into the palace hallway you made your way to the noise and chatter you could hear coming from the main room.
As you entered you saw the room was beautifully decorated with tables full of food and drink everywhere. Of course you recognised no one there so you made your way over to get a drink at one of the tables while everyone danced or talked amongst themselves.
There was no sign of Morpheus but you spotted Lucienne over by the main entrance checking peoples names off the guest list. This made you feel rather privileged at the fact you’d been able to come in without needing to be on the guest list.
You stood for a while one arm wrapped around yourself while the other sipped the strange drink you’d poured yourself. It tasted like some sort of mulled sweet wine. It wasn’t what you would normally drink but it was still rather delicious.
As you turned to place your cup down someone approached you.
“You’re looking exquisite tonight (y/n).”
You spun round to see Morpheus, dressed in his usual attire except he gore a black feathered mask.
“Thank you.”
You couldn’t think of anything more to say but luckily Morpheus did the talking.
“Might I have this next dance?”
He offered his hand and you found yourself agreeing as you took his hand, feeling the warmth of his palm against yours. Your heart began beating fast once more as you began slow dancing to the song that the band was playing. His one hand on your waist as the other kept a firm hold of your hand.
Morpheus noticed you were glancing around the room a lot.
“Is something the matter?”
“I’m just a little nervous.”
You felt too shy to tell Morpheus you were nervous about being this close and intimate with him.
“There’s just no one here I know.”
He smiled, again with his eyes.
“You know me though.” He spoke these words softly as he pulled you in close so that you were against his chest. He moved your hand up to place it on his shoulder as he put both hands on your hips, keeping you close to him.
You decided to make the most of the intimacy and placed your face against his chest so that he could rest his chin on your head.
As the song was finishing you found yourselves standing still amongst everyone.
You slowly looked up into his eyes and he took his chance to lean down and kiss you softly on the lips.
Feeling yourself blushing you pushed through the shyness and furthered the kiss. Just then more upbeat music began to play and you both felt out of place as everyone began dancing to match the new style of music.
“Come, follow me.” He took your hand and lead you through the palace to the balcony where you both stood before.
Now that you were alone you both removed your masks to speak to one another.
“(Y/n) I hope you don’t think me presumptuous for doing that. It’s just that I’ve been yearning to be intimate with you for some time.” Morpheus said in a concerned tone.
“Not at all. I loved it!” You were shocked the king of the dream world would think he was being presumptuous for finally kissing you. You’d been secretly hoping he’d make a move for a while now.
He smiled fully at you saying this. Clearly very happy with your answer.
There was a brief awkward silence as you weren’t sure what to say.
“Do you like my dress? I thought white and gold would look very grand.”
“It’s beautiful although I confess when I placed a selection of clothes in your wardrobe I do not remember that one or the mask for that matter.”
“That’s because they weren’t from my wardrobe. I used my abilities to manipulate dreams to change one of the dresses and masks into a design I wanted.”
You shrugged as you said this as it if was a matter of fact.
Morpheus stared at you for a moment, trying to take in what you had just said.
“You’re saying you can manipulate things within the dreaming even though I destroyed your human form in the waking world?”
He raised his eyebrows, looking intrigued by this.
“Yes, isn’t that what I’m supposed to do?”
“Vortexes usually lose their abilities once destroyed but it seems you’ve retained them.”
He smiled and you were surprised he was so pleased about this. You’d think more than anything he might see you as a threat.
“Am I not still a danger to you and the dreaming?”
He walked towards you.
“It would seem not. But with you retaining the ability to manipulate the dream world this means you and I could rule the dream world together as King and Queen. That is if you accept my proposal.”
He withdrew a ring from his pocket and placed it upon your finger. You examined the beautiful piece. It was a gold ring with a beautiful white Opal, matching the rest of your jewellery.
“Morpheus, you want me to be your wife?”
It wasn’t the traditional proposal you had envisioned. There was no lengthy relationship before getting down on one knee and asking for your hand in marriage. It was somewhat sudden if anything but you kind of liked that about Morpheus. He knew what he wanted and was not going to let you go.
“If you need time to think then please take all the time you need.”
“No of course I want to be your wife!”
You happily threw your arms around him as he lifted you into the air, holding you tightly.
“I love you Morphey!”
You could feel him smiling as he buried his face in your neck, taking in your scent.
“I love you too.” He spoke in a whisper and you could have sworn he was almost too excited to get his words out as his voice shook a little.
