The actor Lou Gossett Jr, who has died aged 87, is best known for his performance in An Officer and A Gentleman (1982) as Gunnery Sergeant Emil Foley, whose tough training transforms recruit Richard Gere into the man of the film’s title. He was the first black winner of an Academy Award for best supporting actor, and only the third black actor (after Hattie McDaniel and Sidney Poitier) to take home any Oscar.
The director, Taylor Hackford, said he cast Gossett in a role written for a white actor, following a familiar Hollywood trope played by John Wayne, Burt Lancaster, Victor McLaglen or R Lee Ermey, because while researching he realised the tension of “black enlisted men having make-or-break control over whether white college graduates would become officers”. Gossett had already won an Emmy award playing a different sort of mentor, the slave Fiddler who teaches Kunta Kinte the ropes in Roots (1977), but he was still a relatively unknown 46-year-old when he got his breakthrough role, despite a long history of success on stage and in music as well as on screen.
Born in Sheepshead Bay, Brooklyn, Louis was the son of Helen (nee Wray), a nurse, and Louis Sr, a porter. As a child he suffered from polio, but became a high school athlete before a basketball injury led to his joining the drama club. His teacher encouraged him to audition professionally, and at 17 he was on Broadway playing a troubled child in Take a Giant Step, which won him a Donaldson award for best newcomer.
He won a drama scholarship to New York University, but continued working, in The Desk Set (1955), and made his television debut in two episodes of the NBC anthology show The Big Story. In 1959 he was cast with Poitier and Ruby Dee in Raisin in the Sun, and made his film debut reprising his role in 1961. On Broadway that year he played in Jean Genet’s The Blacks, in an all-star cast with James Earl Jones, Cicely Tyson, Roscoe Lee Brown, Godfrey Cambridge and a young Maya Angelou; it was the decade’s longest-running show.
Gossett was also active in the Greenwich Village folk music scene. He released his first single Hooka Dooka, Green Green in 1964, followed by See See Rider, and co-wrote the anti-war hit Handsome Johnny with Richie Havens. In 1967 he released another single, a drums and horns version of Pete Seeger’s anti-war hymn Where Have All the Flowers Gone. He was in the gospel musical Tambourines to Glory (1963) and in producer Mike Todd’s America, Be Seated at the 1964 New York World’s Fair.
His plays became more limited: The Zulu and the Zayda and My Sweet Charlie; the very short run of Carry Me Back to Morningside Heights, in which he played a black man owning a white slave; and a revival of Golden Boy (1964), with Sammy Davis Jr. His final Broadway part was as the murdered Congolese leader Patrice Lamumba, in Conor Cruise O’Brien’s Murderous Angels (1971). Gossett had played roles in New York-set TV series such as The Naked City, but he began to make a mark in Hollywood, despite LAPD officers having handcuffed him to a tree, on “suspicion”, in 1966.
On TV he starred in The Young Rebels (1970-71) set in the American revolution. In film, he was good as a desperate tenant in Hal Ashby’s Landlord (1970) and brilliant with James Garner in Skin Game (1971), taking part in a con trick in which Garner sells him repeatedly into slavery then helps him to escape.
In 1977, alongside Roots, he attracted attention as a memorable villain in Peter Yates’s hit The Deep, and got artistic revenge on the LAPD in Robert Aldrich’s The Choirboys. The TV movie of The Lazarus Syndrome (1979) became a series in which Gossett played a realistic hospital chief of staff set against an idealistic younger doctor. He played the black baseball star Satchel Paige in the TV movie Don’t Look Back (1981); years later he had a small part as another Negro League star, Cool Papa Bell, in The Perfect Game (2009).
After his Oscar, he played another assassinated African leader, in the TV mini-series Sadat, reportedly approved for the role by Anwar Sadat’s widow Jihan. Though he remained a busy working actor, good starring roles in major productions eluded him, as producers fell back on his drill sergeant image. He was Colonel “Chappy” Sinclair in Iron Eagle (1986) and its three dismal sequels.
But in 1989 he starred in Dick Wolf’s TV series Gideon Oliver, as an anthropology professor solving crimes in New York. And he won a best supporting actor Golden Globe for his role in the TV movie The Josephine Baker Story (1991). He revisited the stage in the film adaptation of Sam Shepard’s Curse of the Starving Class (1994).
Gossett twice received the NAACP’s Image Award, and another Emmy for producing a children’s special, In His Father’s Shoes (1997). In 2006 he founded the Eracism Foundation, providing programmes to foster “cultural diversity, historical enrichment and anti-violence initiatives”. Despite an illness eventually linked to toxic mould in his Santa Monica home, he kept working with a recurring part in Stargate SG-1 (2005-06). A diagnosis of prostate cancer in 2010 hardly slowed him down.
Most recently, he played Will “Hooded Justice” Reeves in the TV series Watchmen (2019), in the series Kingdom Business, about the gospel music industry, and in the 2023 musical remake of The Color Purple.
His first marriage, to Hattie Glascoe, in 1967, was annulled after five months; his second, to Christina Mangosing, lasted for two years from 1973; and his third, to Cyndi (Cynthia) James, from 1987 to 1992. He is survived by two sons, Satie, from his second marriage, and Sharron, from his third.

things about toronto’s production of the great comet at crow’s theatre/musical stage co that i need everyone to know about because i am obsessed with this show.
as of writing i have seen this show five times.
very long under the cut:
full cast listed here. at time of writing, donna garner replaces louise pitre as marya, tyler pearse replaces lawrence libor as dolokhov, and ben carlson replaces marcus nance as andrey/bolkonsky. currently i’ve seen the og cast four times and the replacements once.
the stage is set up with seats on three out of four sides, with front rows at tables, back of house left and right sides at barstools, and a small balcony with some seats on house right. there are balconies on either side, with a revolving platform in the middle of the stage (revolving by being pushed by cast members or stagehands). seats around 200 people or so.
the actors are EVERYWHERE. it is so incredibly immersive
the music is very punchy
during prologue, everyone is taking shots as they’re introduced, except dolokhov, who drinks straight from the bottle and sprays it into the air
i’m a dolokhov girlie through and through and once he nodded hello at me during the prologue and i legit swooned
mary is walking around holding a program showing off the family tree, actors will point to them on tables etc
once anatole pointed at his face on it, pointed to himself, all in a very flirty manner
he winked at me during prologue once and i’m still thinking about it
evan buliung is acting his ass off as pierre
he is definitely is more gruff and acting focused (think dave malloy over josh groban)
at “hours at my screen”, pierre takes an audience member’s phone (from one of the tables… or once out of someone’s hands LMAO) and mimes tapping, scrolling through it etc
two stagehands move things on and offstage (such as the sofa, church props etc) and they are also in little costumes. it’s very adorable
dolokhov’s little soldier walk thing??? during moscow????? i’m sure there’s a reason for it bc both of them do it but i have no clue why it’s there???? love it tho
heeyun park as mary is also acting her damn heart out
private and intimate life has a faster tempo and is SUCH a banger as a result
an audience member gets briefly pulled up on the platform to be the cheap french thing, he typically kisses up their arm, hugs them, and sometimes sits on their lap a bit
pierre is playing the tambourine in the background during natasha and bolkonskys and it is honestly kind of funny
hailey gillis plays natasha very emotional and headstrong. her no one else has a sense of urgency, desperation, and deep longing
the platform is spinning and people are walking around and she is singing like an angel…
basically i want to be hailey gillis when i grow up
actors are rotating the platform during no one else and it ends with andrey standing behind her and pierre standing in front of her. no one talk to me i’m losing it
as the run has continued, dolokhov’s adlibs during his intro in the opera have increased drastically
lawrence libor as dolokhov had such an air and presence (rizz?) about himself i cannot DESCRIBE. the comphet he gave me… i miss him v much. he was also very much giving toronto mans. and he made SO MUCH eye contact. he loves to look at you. i miss him. i need him. who said that
tumblr theatre girlies you would go insane over lawrence libor. if this show had ANY b roll footage i know i would be seeing edits all over the place
i am president of the lawrence libor fan club and everyone should join me
tyler pearse as dolokhov has heavy frat boy energy. he is also gayer, and somehow, sluttier. gives short king energy despite only being an inch shorter than lawrence (apparently)??? don’t ask bc i don’t know either he just does. anyway thank u tyler pearse for making dolokhov bisexual for real
either way dolokhov is doing SO MUCH in this production. he is wild he is a whirling dervish he is arrogant he is a bastard he is everything to me
“YEAH BABEY LETS GOOOOOOO” -lawrence libor as dolokhov, upon his entrance
in one performance he would go YEAH BABEY three separate times in act 1. yeahh
flirting with a girl in the balcony, dabbing up a guy in the balcony, generally being hilarious
and tyler pearse leaning over the balcony, rose in his mouth, wolf howling… i can’t.
basically i can’t with this production’s dolokhov. i’m obsessed
anatole’s entrance… he’s a whore. all i can say
rita dottor (ensemble) does the high soprano bravooooooo and she always sounds so fantastic. live laugh love rita dottor
george krissa, who plays anatole, is probably the most attractive man in ontario. like if you googled hot guy he would be the first result.
“where did they find this anatole. was he made in a lab or something. he was perfect” — my friend after seeing it
tumblr theatre girlies you would also be obsessed with george krissa. like jeremy jordan andrew rannells level obsessed. please love these toronto actors with me
i’d let him ruin my life ANY DAY. it is a fact that lesbians love george krissa. i hope he knows
the way he plays it… my friend described it like “lucas steele is like an alien david bowie, and george krissa is a bridgerton man. just a very charismatic, but normal, guy”
while i would say that lucas steele’s anatole believes he is truly in love with natasha, i would not say the same for george krissa’s. some of the manipulation happening here during the opera is. quite clear
when he is entering the box natasha struggles to open her fan, fans herself frantically, under the arms etc. then when he enters immediately shifts to fanning in a cool and collected manner. hailey gillis master of comedy
“we are speaking of most ordinary things” is especially like. this is a male manipulator if i’ve ever seen one
natasha lost was added back in!! fantastic obviously
anatole checking his hair in the mirror before waking pierre up. fucker
“look dolokhov’s coming around… and we’re off to the CLEURB”
brendan wall (ensemble) walking around during the club scene with a glowstick necklace on is peak comedy to me
i’ve said it but tyler’s dolokhov is an absolute slut at this scene. and for what AND FOR WHAT!!!!
also fun tidbit but all the glasses (other than shots) and any clear bottles have real liquid in them. i am very concerned something will spill one day
when dolokhov gets right up in the audience’s face during “known only to his intimates” i LOVE it idk
during the duel, marya and rita steal off to house left directly beside the barstools and chatter about how bad of an idea this is, they’re so drunk, etc
special shout out to divine’s “he will kill you STOOPID HUSBAND” so good
dolokhov’s adlibs during the duel… i need him. sorry
dolokhov gets shot in the side rather than his shoulder, and unceremoniously rolls off the platform as it’s moving. looks painful
hélène screams when dolokhov is shot but not pierre. so much to think about here
a life changing dust and ashes from evan. i can’t describe anything more just that he’s incredible. i’ve learned so much about acting just by watching him a few times
natasha’s face at “am i guilty…” breaks my heart she is so tormented
we are canadians we are going to pronounce our french correctly! no more charmantay
hélène has started adding some very fun runs into charming as the run has gone on. divine brown marry me
anatole is shirtless during charming. btw.
again i know he’s gay and i’m gay but.
the entirety of this rendition of the ball has been stuck in my head since december
his “don’t lower your eyes i love you” that whole section is delicious i want to eat his voice
plus “BEWITCHING AND I LOVE YOUUU” UGHHH such an ear worm but only when it’s their voices
the choreo going on here is very nice btw
i love the way he says natalie at this part idk. it’s not overly enunciated and the vowel is just right <— vocal nerd
the kiss feels like it lasts forever
music gets very very loud at the end and you can feel it in your skin
also fun fact the house music before and after the show is orchestral but during intermission it’s electronic. bc. anatole. gah details
when marcus was still in the cast you could really hear his voice during letters and it sounded sooooo.
dolokhov’s stupid little thumbs up to indicate he will be ok. pleaseee. i laughed i did
generally lawrence would grab at the place he was shot at a lot; while pushing the revolve etc. loved that detail. (tyler does too but less so)
sonya and natasha just sounds so great. like they just always sound fantastic i love that song
sonya alone. yes i am weeping. yes camille eanga-selenge is everything i want to be and more. she’s phenomenal
dolokhov sitting in a big fuckin chair at the beginning of preparations just absolutely clearly regretting every decision he’s made to facilitate this. is great.
i know i keep talking abt lawrence libor but the image of him at this part is just. really great. to me. sorry
very campy and exaggerated scowling and grimacing from anatole
dolokhov is so sick of anatole’s shit
“here feel how it beats” is NOT entertained he pushes him back immediately
lawrence dolokhov’s “dawdling” business was him tuning his guitar i miss musician dolokhov sooooo much gah
balaga truly does not sing any of his lines. he is basically yelling the entire time. i don’t know how he does it. it’s chaotic and hilarious and so fun
sonya and mary hand out the egg shakers on house right and left respectfully
near the end of balaga, four audience members are brought up to dance with the cast! (i got to dance with mary once!)
dolokhov writhing on the floor during anatole’s long held note thank u
during the goodbye section, anatole comes around to said audience members and interacts with them; dancing with them, booping them on the nose etc, and at “kiss me one last time”, invites a lucky audience member to kiss his cheek. (this once, was me. yup. still processing it.)
once he accidentally knocked someone’s egg shaker from their hand, dolokhov picked it up, laughed, gave it a shake, and handed it back, and yes i’m still thinking about it
when they sit down, balaga and dolokhov will sit on the house right stairs, though once there was an empty seat nearby so dolokhov wedged his way in between two people, guitar and all. so fucking good
anatole will squeeze himself between two audience members on house left, put an arm around each, and look around at everyone sitting in that area, out into the audience, etc. if one is going to make eye contact with him, it is now
once he threw his head back to look at the people behind him, and someone, at the speed of light, took their phone out and snapped a picture of his upside down head. i scream laughed
lawrence’s BETRAYED BETRAYEDDDD was sooooo good. so so so good
hailey gillis is an absolute powerhouse during in my house
usually when “natasha’s whole body shook” she falls to the ground silently but last time i went she YELLED and i gasped so loud
at “i have refused him” louise would go NO in shock and i FREAK OUT ABOUT IT.
and i loved her “what then? would that be alright???”
“NATASHA CRIED OUT! GO AWAY! GO AWAY YOU ALL HATE AND DESPISE ME” sounds SO FUCKING GOOD!!! I LOVE YOU HAILEY GILLIS
when the call to pierre music starts i always get goosebumps
the fight choreo when pierre grabs anatole by the collar is very good
if we’re comparing to broadway, it feels less like anatole’s life is in danger here but like i’m not upset about it
at this point anatole does not seem sad or upset to me more just. pissed off that it didn’t go his way. like annoyed
as anatole leaves during pierre and anatole the staging has him stepping around/over natasha as she is choking from the arsenic and it is such a. show of his shallowness
his petersburg note is fantastic obviously. live laugh love george krissa
marcus nance (andrey) has such a deep and beautiful legit singing voice. it’s sooo gorgeous. any word that raises against marcus nance will fall.
I MISS HIMMMM ok sorry.
i am more sympathetic to ben carlson’s andrey, however. marcus was Incredibly stoic ben has a bit more emotion to him i think
i could swear sometimes hailey is actually crying during pierre and natasha
her “pytor kirillovich” sounds so tiny and fragile ugh my heart breaks
and his “…pierre” is so assuring AUGHH
it’s such a beautiful scene obviously. i love the two of them so damn much i hope only good things happen to them forever
“it was clear and cold” also. chills EVERY TIME
“having traced its parabola” and “like an arrow piercing the earth” hit me so hard i cannot explain
genuinely evan buliung gives the most effective inspiring fantastic mind blowing performance i maybe have ever seen on stage. he is such an incredible actor and he inspires me beyond belief
the end when the lights get really really bright and then fade out. god. so simple and so fucking beautiful
now this post is very long. thank u for reading it all if you did! (will update after seeing it more times if there’s things to say!!)
if you’re anywhere near toronto i BEG of you to go see it!! it’s closing march 24th :(( so if you get the chance i deeply implore you. beg borrow or steal a ticket just get there! best comet production ever in my biased opinion :)

Karaoke And Music Headcanons - Yakuza 1-4 Protagonists Edition
Karaoke is one of my favorite parts of Yakuza and they are genuinely bangers tbh, plus the VAs do a great job so here are some of my thoughts on how our protags are when they go out to karaoke and what they like to listen to.
Kazuma Kiryu
Mostly listens to classic rock. Has a small vinyl collection at Morning Glory tucked away into a corner of his room. However, he rarely listens to music loudly as he does not want to disturb the kids.
Will not dance to music but will bob his head to the beat. Sadly his dancing days are behind him, along with the bubble era. He didn’t mind cutting loose on the dance floor when he was in his early 20′s though.
On the other hand, he loves karaoke. He will usually go by himself and just belt out his favorite songs. It’s honestly a form of stress relief for him. Sometimes he’ll take the kids with him and they all have a blast.
Since he does enjoy singing, he is extremely proud of Haruka for pursuing an idol career. He will never brag about Haruka to others to avoid ruining her chances at success but secretly he is THE proudest dad. Will memorize all the words to anything she sings.
Majima Goro
Mostly listens to pop music. Prefers 80′s and 90′s pop but anything on the radio suits his taste. If it’s catchy, he likes it.
Is very bad at memorizing lyrics so he hums all the time instead. He often gets caught at work humming some jingle to himself. Only knows all the words to his company construction song.
Despite this, he loves writing his own silly songs in his head. Usually they’re rather silly. He loves to annoy Saejima with whatever random tune he’s come up with.
At karaoke, he is good at singing if it’s a song he is somewhat familiar with. If he has never heard it before, he will just improv his way through most of it, cackling to himself. He prefers dancing to singing karaoke.
Saejima Taiga
Like Kiryu, he’s more of a rock guy. Also fond of blues. More of an old school music fan. He’s not up to date on new singers or bands.
He’s very self conscious so he will not play music on speakers or sing out loud. He prefers to wear headphones while listening to music. You might catch him humming VERY quietly to himself, which sounds like a low rumbling almost.
Rarely seen at karaoke but Majima drags him there anyways. Even if neither of them know the words or are good at singing, Majima wants to make up for lost time with his sworn brother.
Very shy when he sings but once he gets going, he has a smooth bassy voice. Prefers to do backup. Great at keeping a beat with a tambourine.
Akiyama Shun
Up to date on all the music trends. Part of the territory with running a hostess club, honestly. He picks up a lot of new music from the girls there.
As an extension of his work, sometimes he takes his hostesses to karaoke as part of their training for after hours dates. They’re all a little intimidated when he does this as he tends to sing better than all of them.
Loves going to karaoke, especially with Hana as she is the only one who can keep up with his energy. They sing a lot of duets.
He’s big on love songs. Akiyama is a romantic and daydreamer at heart so his music taste reflects that. Loves a sappy ballad. Also really into jazz music but he doesn’t talk about it much and prefers to listen to it in the comfort of his home when he’s trying to unwind.
Tanimura Masayoshi
Being able to speak so many languages has given way to Tanimura exploring a lot of world music. He’s really into k-pop lately but will not admit it, even if you ask him. The other cops tease him for it but he and Mei Hua bond over it. He is also fond of rap music.
He’s very shy about singing and will try to avoid karaoke as much as possible. However, if he does get roped into it, he’s a pretty decent singer, albeit he does tend to sing rather softly.
Surprisingly fond of dancing and is kind of good at it. He tries to learn choreography from k-pop or j-pop routines in his spare time as he finds it both entertaining and good exercise. Helps him stay light on his feet.
Usually listens to music with a pair of earbuds and a music app on his phone. Since he’s always on the go, he doesn’t really have any form of music system at his apartment.
Bonus Round! Haruka Sawamura
Despite being an idol, she’s pretty neutral on most pop music. She is partial to girl groups and other girl idols as she looks up to them but she mostly ever listens to them as a means to better understand the industry rather than out of enjoyment.
Actually a metal fan but keeps it under wraps. Listens to music using earbuds and will quietly mouth the lyrics to herself under her breath.
At karaoke though, Haruka will always belt it out. She’s a lot like Kiryu in that way. They have the best jam sessions at karaoke.
She is not shy about singing at all, given her career. However, she is not the showboating type and will never brag or boast about her abilities. She’s very humble and to this day compliments on her singing make her blush.

Okay here is my post about my Ride the Cyclone ✨animation/animatic✨ ideas I’ve been formulating but never really posted bc I cannot draw for the life of me 🥲
@gay-little-axolotl read at your own risk (you’ll be here a while, trust me)
Karnak’s Dream of Life
Basically the exact same as in the show, headless body singing eerily, finding a little doll and popping off the head
there’s a shot of Karnak’s machine at the end of the song which snaps into Welcome…, which is just talk so we don’t need to animate that shit
Fall Faire Suite/Uranium Suite
Since I love them both, I’m writing their ideas both in the same category
When the kids start singing at the beginning of the song, all six of them are in the bandshell, Penny included
However, every time we think we actually get a good look at Penny, something coincidentally blocks her face, whether it be Mischa’s figure, Ocean’s arm, a quick shot of Ricky playing the tambourine, shit like that
The world is in full color while the kids are alive (I’ll explain why that’s important in a sec)
As Karnak explains how the kids got into the accident, we see them get into the coaster*, Ricky needing help from Mischa and Noel, and we see the ride function as normal
In Uranium Suite, you can hear Jane vocalizing ominously in the background, and that little warning sign is present in the way the kids are all a little tense
Once Karnak says “hurtling the children to their deaths,” the color is gone. The kids are drawn in white outlines and all there is is a black screen
During Fall Faire Suite, each kid goes back in color as they speak, only for it to disappear once they’re done
During the “sailing through space” bit, they’re back on the coaster, in slow motion as it falls, then quickly cuts to them in purgatory
“Empty streets of empty shops” has Ocean taking apart little buildings and Constance scooping up the pieces to make a mall
“Smart ones all packed up and went” has Noel dragging out a bunch of suitcases and Mischa labeling the abandoned houses for sale
Very few visuals of Penny are shown, like she disappeared without a trace
“Did we finally leave our town?” has them all in color for a second, then back to white.
Meet Jane Doe
Ocean whispers her line, Karnak says his, and BAM! Spotlight from nowhere
Foreshadowing TBOJD, Jane floats as she’s introduced, and touches ground once she speaks
As she speaks, flashes of the aftermath of the incident show up
“They found my body/not my head” has professionals finding the kids’ bodies, and flashlights looking for Penny’s head
“No parents came” actually has a little boy with a black cape running to the headless girl, screaming a name no one hears
“My life, an unsolved mystery” has pictures of Penny with the choir, her face always strategically covered
What the World Needs
Here we go with the solos!! Ocean’s in color in her song, along with everything she interacts with, the others are in black and white
Ocean wears a varsity jacket with her name in the back, along with a blue shirt that says “Vote for Ocean!” with her hair in a ponytail with a bandana
The others are dressed in “Vote Ocean” propaganda, but whenever Ocean herself insults them, they become newspaper clippings of the people she’s calling them (sandwich artist, security guard, Wal-Mart greeter)
“The move” has Ocean dancing in a club
“The shake” has an earthquake that is covered by a statue of her
“The headline maker” has a newspaper thrown on screen with a headline saying “World’s Greatest Woman!” and a snazzy picture of Ocean
During the second verse, as Ocean is berating Mischa, Constance, and Ricky, there’s a story book-esque animation of each of her interpretations of their lives, under smaller, less important articles
“And as we move through life” is a sliding shot of Ocean standing on top of the world, with the others tiny and insignificant
As the “zeros” bit happens, a big fat 0 is written over everyone’s newspaper picture, and Ocean rips up the paper as she just shoves the thought aside
For the climax, the world spins as Ocean stands on top of it, with the others just barely catching up to admire her and her glory
Final shot is EXACTLY like the 2016 promo shot, her on top of everyone in a human pyramid
Noel’s Lament (TW: drinking, smoking, mu*der, s//h)
Now Noel’s Lament was more fluid for me to think of. Noel himself and his reality is grey, but when he sings about Monique or from her perspective, the world is bright and alive
Noel doesn’t do the quick change, it’s a transition shot from his iconic pose to Monique in a similar stance
The “good girls call me the town bicycle” is Constance and Jane in their costumes (beauteous dresses of the time) whispering while Monique walks past
Claude is Ocean. I will not elaborate (psst she’s in a suit with the cutest low ponytail)
“Ten! Times! In! His! Back!” shows the stabbing, but cuts to Monique holding a cigarette innocently
“Never ending carnival” is a revolving shot of Monique’s hand holding booze, a cigarette, and another man’s hand
The accordion (piano if you’re a 2016 bootleg fan) solo has the little nischa dance, i literally cannot take that away
“I think I am in love with you” cuts to a close up of Monique’s eyes widening a little, whether in fear or in recollection, I’ll leave that up to you
“I give in to the fantasy” is like a little spicy cut, that’s all im saying
“for i sing sONGs” has people passing Monique by as she trips on the road scrounging up some loose change, and she moves into an empty alleyway
Time passes a little, and there are deep lines in Monique’s face and her eyes are heavy with lack of sleep
“In some rat infested Chinese dive” is just Monique smoking alone in an alleyway, pressing the hot cigarette to her arm to try and get a reaction
“Eight months later” is Noel telling the story, then the little gasp is a quick shot of Monique’s eyes filling with tears
We see her forced out of the house and she desperately drags herself through an alley
She’s slumped against a wall when Ricky as the priest approaches her
During the first “for I sing songs,” we see through Monique’s hazy eyes as she spots a bottle of booze and drags herself towards it
We see her drink it, and then her hand goes limp and the bottle shatters
In the real world, Noel’s now in costume, standing on that chair
During the climax, Noel’s singing face is projected over flashes of Monique’s life, her tragedy shown in clips and hastily sewn together
And finally, the song ends with Noel draped against the chair, the others surrounding him
Every Story’s Got a Lesson
Short and simple, but Ocean snaps about Noel’s song and Karnak deadpans
As Ocean says “No.. every story has a lesson!” she finds a grad cape and cap and throws it on
As she sings, a blackboard appears with the words of the song written in chalk
The others, also in capes and caps, whistle and sing along
Somehow Karnak gets a hat on his head too
This Song is Awesome
Unlike Ocean and Noel, since being a rapper isn’t Mischa’s dream or desire, he’s black and white while the others are in full color, along with the contents of his music video
You read that right. Music. Video.
Specifically a music video shot by a seven year old with a short attention span and edited by a bunch of preschoolers
Not that it’s bad, it’s just got focus on things that are irrelevant, the editing goes insane, there’s a brief moment where Jane is literally photoshopped into the sky (TBOJD ref hehe)
Mischa wears a black and gold tracksuit but since it’s black and white you wouldn’t really tell
The others are Mischa’s background dancers, wearing blue and white
Basically every single time Mischa says “awesome,” the word is like edited onto the screen like a history teacher’s presentation
There are really good shots tho, like Mischa driving a convertible to the Hard Rock Cafe with Noel and Ricky
Surprisingly there is a Learjet in the video, no one really knows how that got there
The girls are all fawning over him in the club and then he sees a girl wearing punkish clothes and a white flowy skirt and the music video falls apart
Talia
The second Mischa lays eyes on Talia, the color slightly blooms into the video and he walks over to her
Instead of a photo of her, he genuinely talks to her, and you can see the love and care he has for her
When the others come back, they’re not in a club anymore, they’re out in a garden in a traditional Ukrainian wedding
While the girls escort “Talia,” who’s now been replaced with Jane, the boys help Mischa get prepared
When Mischa and Jane finally do interact, instead of Jane’s doll face, it’s Talia’s big brown eyes and warm smile that greets Mischa
They dance together, happily in love, with the others singing cheerfully in the background
Then Talia is suddenly ripped away from Mischa as he falls, falls, falls from the rollercoaster
As he does, his phone, also falling, flashes a picture of Talia on the lock screen
Mischa’s now in normal clothes, staring at the picture, while the others just dance around him, it’s a whole vibe
Then it cuts to Mischa and Talia in a grainy video, Mischa picks Talia up, spins her around, and she kisses him
Space Age Bachelor Man
I have SO MANY ideas for this song so this is gonna be LONG!
Song starts with Ricky alone, a single spotlight illuminating him in black and white.
“Others from outer space” has a peculiar spacecraft arriving in front of Ricky
Once those claps start, you know it’s gonna be wild
The spacecraft opens and spills a light that makes Ricky come into color, and the boys, in Zolarian couture, alert Ricky of their duty
When Ricky arrives on Zolar, the girls, now space aliens with tails and cat ears, practically throw themselves into his arms
“The naughty/holy daughters of the realm” has a shot of Ricky being crowdsurfed (for lack of a better term) through a sea of cat ladies
Um before the guitar solo, Ricky kisses Cat!Ocean. I don’t make the rules
Now the.. that scene is kept covered for a reason, so naturally I’d also just use shadows to convey wtf is happening then
“Now there is a new challenge” has the boys worried in front of holographic screens showing K-9’s enemy fleet
“For they’re at war with K-9!” had Ricky bursting out with the wildest, sexiest, most glittery costume you could EVER expect and it is everything to me
Suddenly everyone’s holding a laser gun and that makes Ricky freak out
So instead of announcing war, he goes to a podium and explains his desire of peace, which is broadcast to K-9’s fleet (idk how, i just think it’s funny)
“And they listened/and they heard my message” is Ricky breaking the fourth wall, pausing the action Emperor’s New Groove style before going back to the scheduled programming
The rest of the song is basically then partying in the spacecraft as it sends Ricky back home to Earth
The Ballad of Jane Doe
Jane, in a plain white dress, is alone. And everything is black and white. Not a single sliver of color anywhere
Everyone else is in funeral wear, however they pay no attention to Jane, like she was never human to begin with
We see Jane play with the decapitated doll and a rollercoaster toy, watching as it went up, then fall out of the seat
Every so often a flash of color and the faintest hint of a life beyond Jane is shown, but it’s so brief there’s no way to actually see it
As Jane begs St. Peter to let her into heaven(?), Jane tries to look for a helping hand but no one assists
“Wont you tell me at last who I am?” has Jane reaching out, not just to the sky, but to the funeral goers who can’t seem to notice her
Then we cut to Ja/enny (flashes between perspectives) in the rollercoaster, and how she lost her head
As Jane starts flying, her pleads become angry, more scornful since no one is giving her answers, but she’s still getting only tiny flashes. Not even a face, just a feeling or an emotion
“Time eats all his children” is Jane standing ominously, slowly pointing out into the non-existent crowd
“A melody floats through the air” has her flying through the funeral, the others ignoring her as she desperately tries to find herself. Her name
She flies through the graves, her desperation becoming more and more apparent
There’s a flash of a baby, a little boy, a monkey puppet, a thermos
Then Jane stops in front of a freshly dug grave, and she knows it’s her own. But its headstone is unmarked
And she just cries as the funeral goers surround the tomb of the empty girl
The New Birthday Song
Also short and sweet
Everyone wears a birthday outfit and Jane has the cape and hat
As she stands in the middle of the circle, holding the cupcake, the others dance around her
Then Constance gently nudged her arm and gestures to the cupcake
(Jane tries to eat it but Constance blows it out first)
Jawbreaker & Sugar Cloud
Lumping them both bc of the themes
We see the accident through Constance’s eyes. See the way it rose, then suddenly fell
“My heart just welled up” is a shot of Constance’s eyes widening, her terrified face morphing gently into a smile
As this happens, the flashbacks of the mundane things Constance learned to love are shown over it. We see her going back to bed, hanging upside down, her brother, her friends
And she starts to laugh as the coaster falls. And tears spill from her eyes as she does
In the present, Constance, in white outlining, wipes away her tears and collects herself for Sugar Cloud
As the song begins, we see a little flashback of Constance as a little girl given her first jawbreaker. She’s excited, then starts slowly sucking away the layers and gets visibly disappointed
“At first it seems so sweet” shows some clips of Constance growing up, and then she just loses the sparkle in her eye and spring in her step
Then the song starts to pick up and color arrives, everywhere as Constance just siblings merrily
Constance and the others aren’t in the warehouse anymore, they’re in the skies of blue, pink, gold, and purple
Constance jumps through a gold, pink, and blue cloud and emerges with her outfit, a pink jacket over a gold top and blue flats. A pink top hat attached to a headband is on her head
Twirling a cane, Constance genuinely sings happily with the others as they dance and jump through the multicolored clouds
The recorder solo is as memorable as always, with the others hyping Connie on by dancing and cheering excitedly
With no guilt in her heart, Constance happily shouts from the top of the sugary puffs her love for everything in her life, and the others happily back her up
It’s Not a Game/It’s Just a Ride
At this point in time, everyone’s back in their normal uniforms, drawn in their white outlines
The portal’s light gives Jane color, as she’s the one the others picked
Before Jane goes through the portal, she hugs Constance and Ricky, then steps through
A slideshow of clips appear showing of Penny’s life, before and after LEGOLAND, and the others all cuddle together to watch
As the slideshow goes by, the others are overlayed above it, so we can see their expressions now that Penny was brought back
As Penny grows older, she’s closer to her brother, she gets married, has children, is happy
When the slideshow starts showing clips of Penny growing much older, a clip is shown of children pointing at a picture
Older Penny takes a look at it and smiles. “They were my friends,” she seems to say, gently holding the picture of her and the choir
As she dies, Karnak says his final line as Virgil cuts the power cable
As sparks fly and the kids huddle close, they learn they’re not five. They’re six
Penny had come back to the afterlife after her death and the six of them were alone, in their white outlines
“But it’s not a game, it’s not a game” has Ocean picking up pieces of their outfits. A “Vote Ocean” pin, a feather boa, and black and gold cap, a cat ear headband, a doll with no head, a headband with a hat
“It’s just a ride!” has the kids in their outfits actually riding the Cyclone in full color, passing the loop that ended their lives and finishing the ride
*Now that they finished the ride in the afterlife, they all get out of the rollercoaster and reminisce about life together
“We’re all just sailing through space” is the kids as they revolve through all their outfits of the show, while talking about their lives, and their death
“It’s just a ride” has them all holding hands and spinning around, wearing the outfits for their individual songs
Then they fall to the floor and smile as they’re all together again
“And the world will keep on spinning/With no ending or beginning” has flashes of their songs, Ocean’s victory pose, Noel’s dramatic end, Mischa stopping his video, the couple’s fateful kiss, Ricky and his cat warriors, Penny taking Jane’s place on her named grave, and Constance in sugary clouds
Now in their uniforms, the Saint Cassian Chamber Choir is just a group of friends, who are all together and happy in the afterlife forever
“I know this dream of life is never ending” cuts to a girl with French braids waking up on the ground. She stands up and sees the light of the sun
“It goes around and ‘round and ‘round again” shows six friends, bonded by fate and together through time
THIS IS PROBABLY MY LONGEST EVER POST BUT I LOVE IT SO HAHA

Whirling Mummy One-shot
Tumblr media
(Art by Sam Mameli)
Have been deathly ill for most of this month, with barely the focus to do anything. So I've been in the dumps.
Last Wednesday I ran a one-shot for my regular TTRPG group, just to feel like I could do something---anything. I didn't have much of a voice. Just a low rasp. So all my characters that night were kinda husky, sultry folks, the kind you might find in a bar.
Apopros to the game, I suppose. I ran the Whirling Mummy, a dance-hall adventure I created for Prismatic Wastelands' ENNIE-winning bar-crawl campaign setting, Barkeep On The Borderlands:
THE WHIRLING MUMMY Madam Smiling is the never-seen proprietress of The Whirling Mummy, an undead-themed dance hall, named after Madam Smiling's ancient, still-animate consort. + Before the Keep, before goblins lived in caves – a goddess cursed a king to dance. He danced all night, he danced all season. He danced and he died. They buried him dancing. He danced in his tomb of jade mosaic. A quake split the Iron Fens, and cracked his tomb, and spat him out dancing. Tonight, in the mummy's honour: a dance-off! Various crews compete to win their hearts' desire. There has never been a wish Madam Smiling could not grant.
+++
Got my players to make characters using Barkeep's evocative background packages. The party:
Frederick the Foppish Dandy, with a big hat, dueling pistol, and a wealthy fiance called Giorgio ("Georgie!");
Alejandra the Ebullient Dancer, with a tambourine, vial of poison, and her patron the noble chanteuse Lady Gaga;
Melan the Troubled Musician, with a flute, a cymbal-playing pet monkey, and a broken heart.
Tumblr media
Serendipitously appropriate, for an adventure featuring a dance contest!
Melan decides they have history with Kril Mouser, leader of the club's musicians.
Ironically, Alejandra spends her whole night off the podium, gassing up the crowd to win over their support.
Frederick ("Freddie!") plays out a rivalry with one of competing dance crews: a trio of voguing toffs.
Tumblr media
Freddie ends up being the night's star dancer. "This is the kind of music Frederick plays in his room," his player says:
youtube
+++
I rolled a new event for every turn / round of the dance-off, for maximum shenanigans:
A skeleton flapper loses her head on the dance floor. The Dancer turns that skull into a ball the cheering crowd can bounce around. Poor skelly!
A gang of electric-lute-wielding bards storm Kril Mouser's band stage in an attempt to take it over. Melan spends the round fighting them off, earning the musicians' favour. (Alejandra throws her skeleton skull, knocking a bard out.)
A paladin raid on the club for illegal necromancy. This coincides with the last round of the dance-off; Freddie is too drunk to continue, so Melan takes the stage, and duels Master Mocking Of A Million Eyes, the peacock demon and final boss.
Melan's player describes their dance as "Lizzo with a flute, but while performing a Celine-Dion-like ballad".
This means they beat an eldritch horror with a combination of this:
Tumblr media
and this:
youtube
Nice.
+++
So the party won the dance-off. They are entitled to wishes from Madam Smiling.
Frederick asks to be the richest person in the world;
Alejandra wants to retroactively swap places with her patron Lady Gaga;
Melan selflessly asks for land back for the indigenous lizardfolk. (The industrial district in which the Whirling Mummy sits used to belong to the lizard-people; there were lizard nuns handing out pins outside the club.)
I was very pleased with this game. I think it was my first successful, self-contained one-shot? We played for about three hours, and I felt buoyed by endorphins after.
I love my players. Thank you Am, Ai and Vesha for playing with me; you have kept my love for this game stuff alive.
I lost my voice again, the next day.
+++
Final scene, one year later:
Melan is the opening act for a concert by Lady Alejandra, in a city ruled by Prince Frederick the First.
All of this happens a continent away; the city in which Barkeep is set has been totally erased. A trade agreement has been signed with the lizardfolk queendoms, however---and ambassadors report an incongruous-looking dance hall, in the middle of the marsh.
Inside, it is said, a mummy in jade shoes endlessly dances. Inside, it is said, a dance contest is held, and its prize is whatever your heart desires.

Can you do Sam x Farmer with a little sister about Vincent's age?
Sam x Farmer with a Little Sister Headcanons
I'M ALIVE AGAIN! WOO! But sorry this took so long; it's a nice prompt.
Tumblr media
He's super excited to meet you, and even more excited when he finds out about your little sister! Finally, the kids will have someone new to play with. He loves seeing Vincent able to get a new friend. Sure, Jas and Leo are nice, but it's still only two kids. Now his little brother gets a new friend, and so does he!
He babysits your sister all the time. You two hang out in his room or in the lounge while the kids play together. Sometimes Sam tries to cook dinner for them. It's... less than edible. But you shush the kids into complimenting him on his efforts. This babysitting actually happens a lot. Sam says it's just to give his mother a break, but that can't be it.
He can and will get you to join in with him in singing the kids songs. Apparently, you're just too good a singer to not use your talents. He's roped Sebastian and Abigail into it a few times as well, but it's usually you singing, Sam on his guitar, your sister playing with a kid's tambourine, and Vincent playing with once-clean-now-covered-in-floor-grime pots and pans.
Him and the ASS squad basically adopt your sister. She's now an official member of the teenage bullshitting club. Don't worry though, they turn down the volume of their swearing when she's around. Sam probably jokes about you two being a couple, and his friends push it to tease him.
-~-~-
Once again, sorry if this took too long. My interest in Stardew fluctuates a lot, so I go through phases of just not being bothered. But I am doing this for free so I guess nobody can get too mad haha. Anyways, as always, thank you for the ask!

Random dance opinions
1. Conventions should allow 1 free parent/caretaker for each mini and junior (honestly all minors). Kids that age do still need their parents and it's also a major safety hazard to leave children unguarded in a room full of strangers (especially knowing btf's history...). I think it's morally wrong to charge people for looking after their kids.
2. Yagp should encourage juniors (12–14) more to perform on flats. Many people in that age are still not ready to perform whole variations en pointe but they do it anyway because you kinda "have to" because that's the norm
3. Esmeralda tambourine and Grand Pas should be strictly for seniors only. Esmeralda because it requires so much charisma and maturity to perform, Grand Pas because it is so hard (I know more than one case of dancers getting injured because of it)
4. People are wayyy too nitpicky on Molly and she's actually ones of the less problematic popular studio owners/teachers out there. Club = owned by a trumpie (and also supporter of blue lives matter); Space = actively hires Mark Meismer and tries to hide it; Larkin = Chelsea and her sex offender pedo husband; Stars and MBA = known for body shaming
Now the more random ones
5. I'm no expert but I think some of the contemporary entries should definitely be under lyrical
6. I don't like Expressenz productions at all. Sorry but I don't like 100 dancers on the stage and I don't like their choreo style in general
7. DM opinion: fans were far too hard on Kendall, yeah she cried a lot but she was a sensitive kid and on a reality show set?? I would've cried too

i like how i know that the music is helpful in rhythm heaven (since y'know, it's a rhythm game) but i just. don't rely on it 90% of the time. it's just not helpful for me in 90% of games n the only game's it's even helpful in the whole time are shoot-'em-up, tambourine and working dough-

Astrid is also the type of person to trusts in people very easily and puts all her faith in them! She knows that they can do good deep down! ✼ ҉ ✼ ҉ ✼
Backstory: Born to a small kingdom in the Shaftlands, Astrid was seen as an inferior spare to her older sister. However, this didn’t bother the young Astrid! She adored her sister and regularly snuck into her sister’s room to play with her late into the night! Although both of the girls could very well one day be queen, her parent’s prioritized her elder sister’s upbringing rather than her own which left Astrid with nothing to do most days but daydream and get good at single player chess. This was further exacerbated by her apparent lack of magic. While her sister Isfrid had extremely powerful ice magic, Astrid had nothing. She often wondered when she too would finally get her magic but all around her believed her to be magicless. However, while her sister was in her 3rd year at NRC, Astrid had a breakthrough! Her magic had finally came to her! Now with new hope instilled in their daughter, Astrid’s parents started giving her the formal teachings that her sister had but only this time it was many years later. A little bit later, Astrid was accepted into NRC and was sorted into Heartslabyul.
✼ ҉ ✼ ҉ ✼
Trivia!
Astrid is four years younger than her sister Isfrid
Astrid’s love of chocolate all started when she accidentally ate some cookies that were meant for a party and she became hooked!
Astrid has tried to get over her dislike of vegetables and so far has been successful! Except for three certain vegetables
Astrid has become very good at playin chess by herself
Astrid isn’t too good at instruments in the Light Music club but does have a knack for playing the tambourine!
Astrid is typically in charge of party games at unbirthday parties!
If it wasn’t for her freckles and icy blonde ahoge, most wouldn’t think her and Isfrid were related!
As she’s a late bloomer to magic, Astrid hasn’t really mastered many magical attacks or spells yet
There’s a rumor that Astrid was meant to go to RSA but insisted on going to NRC to be with her sister

My Little Pony/CPC AU! What elements would the Princes and Princesses have?
Kindness: Gwen obviously
Honest: Frederick because of how brutally honest and sassy he is!🤭
Generosity: Blaine(when he’s not being manipulated by Leland) i imagine Blaine being a really generous guy.
Loyalty: It was a tie between Lorena and Lance because both are very loyal to there family and friends. But I feel like Lorena should get this element…Why?
Laughter: Because we all know Lance is the jokester of the family and this element fits him the most.
Magic: Maria…because Maria represented all five elements at some point
Kindness: for her family and Blaine(That one moment she said that she’s rooting for him and not his perfection)
Honesty: And though I hate to say this but at the gala Blaine really was showing his ‘truly ugly side’
Generosity: Offering her dress to Gwen after the opossum and rat are hers.
Loyal: Not wanting to marry someone who makes her sister feel less than important.
Laughter: (honestly her dirty thoughts and crazy antics (convincing the fan club to interrupt a piano contest just to cheer up Blaine) alone are enough to get us laughing.
Plus in EG
youtube
Gwen with a tambourine
Frederick playing the Base
Blaine playing a keytar!!! Yes!!!
Lorena playing the guitar
Lance on the drums
And of course Maria as the lead singer.
And finally is Sunset Shimmer’s element is redemption that one will go to Suzie it could also be Blaine’s element. But I want Suzie to be their Sunset Shimmer.
And yes guys I know her element was later specified to be empathy. But when she first ponied up I assumed her element to be Redemption.
Plus this could also work for Suzie as she can be extremely rude because she’s so full of herself as we’ve seen in the flashback cause her a bit of a problem with someone threatening her because she had no empathy for them. So gaining the element of empathy can be a good character growth. Though she would still be full of herself she just won’t be as rude about it.
(Then again Jamie could be empathy as his powers aside from some kind of light manipulation. He can taste the feeling of others through their food…or really anything they make that he puts in his mouth.)

Peter with James Lee Stanley, and with The Monkees in 1997.
“The Monkees have lined up a three-month hiatus to look at who we are and what we want to do. I think we’re going to tour the States later this summer, but I don’t know if it’s going to be as a trio or a quartet. In all honesty, it [the reunion tour] was difficult for Michael. There are aspects of this that are daunting for him, and he’s not sure that he’s up to it. I have a lot of respect for Michael and hope he comes along. I did the trio reunion in the ‘80s for three years. Been there, done that, sold the T-shirt. I would like to do the quartet show. I know Micky would like to do the quartet show. He was invigorated by being the drummer again. But there is the terror of being, as Michael calls it, ‘the critical past,’ where if you fail, you are a failure.” - Peter Tork, The Sacramento Bee, April 20, 1997 “I always thought that Peter got the short end of the stick on the whole Monkees thing. That whole ‘They didn’t play their own instruments’ s—. There was a whole slew of studio musicians who played on groups’ records then. That’s how they made their living. I knew for a fact that a musician who played on the Monkees album also played on ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ but the Byrds didn’t get s— for not playing all their own instruments.” - James Lee Stanley, The Sacramento Bee, April 20, 1997 “I finally, after many, many years, have sorted it out. The Monkees now are a legitimate music group. We’re working together on that basis. What most people think is that we were a fake rock group. But what it is is: We were a genuine cast of a TV show. And we became a group. A group that made its own music, played their own instruments, and went out and performed together. The Monkees did all that.” - Peter Tork, The Sacramento Bee, April 20, 1997 “It looks to me to be a wash. Every time I’ve gone out as a solo or in this context, I get about the same result… I do well in the small clubs. I make money — not as much as I do as a Monkee — and the audiences are pretty much satisfied. They don’t come in all agog and then think, ‘Is that all there is?’ and leave before it’s over.” - Peter Tork, The Sacramento Bee, April 20, 1997

Seeing Robin and Steve still over by the stage. Their faces said calm, but their body language said concerned. In between listening to the hellfire club and picking at your food, you kept checking on Steve's face.
As they walked over to you guys, Max didn't say anything but gave you a small smile as she sat down. You tilted your head at Steve, but he just gave you nothing. Same with Robin you thought to yourself.
Eddie was sat next to you. Talking with the hellfire kids and acting like yesterday's explosion had never happened. Still, Steve didn't miss the way Eddie covered your wrist with his hand, exactly where the bruise was. As if to act as your little reminder. Your eyes quietly pleaded with Robin as you watched Steve shove more and more mashed potato into his mouth.
He wanted to give Dustin an excuse as to why he wasn't talking, which meant Dustin just turned to you and Eddie.
"When did you write that song you guys sang? It sounded pretty good." He gave you a little wink as to which you just chuckled. You did not miss the way Eddie's grip around your wrist tightened. "Someone almost fell off beat with the tambourine" He looked at Steve as to which Steve just sent him a middle finger with his tongue sticking out. Only earning him an eye roll in return.
"Oh I-" You looked at Robin quickly as she slightly shook her head. You weren't gonna tell him and the whole hellfire kids, but you didn't really have the best cover up answer. "I just wrote it this morning" You looked back down at your food, continuing to be disinterested in it.
"You guys have a fight?" Mike piped up, asking what all the kids were thinking. One quick glare from Eddie was all the younger boy needed to shut up again.
They had seen Eddie drive off with you in the car yesterday. They had seen your faces and the interaction with Billy. Ooo boi.
The question still lingering in the air, you realised you had waited a beat longer than you had wanted to answer, "No of course not. No, the song was about something else..." You looked at your best friends for help, but their blank stares back answered your own question.
"Something else?" Asked Dustin leaning in. He was such a little gossiper. Steve was shooting him death stares and a 'cut it out' hand gesture but Dustin was ignoring him.
"Or someone else..." Eddie muttered as he leant across and stole some of Gareth's fries. Thankfully the kids hadn't heard, but the wide eyes of the band members and the way they looked from you then back to Eddie made you swallow any words you were about to say.
"I wrote it ages ago; the lyrics were already done. It was holding me back." You tried to keep your voice normal as you could feel the rings that you loved so much on Eddie imprint onto your skin again. The bruise throbbing underneath your sleeve and you knew he knew what he was doing.
With your stomach turning, you felt your body begin to sweat. Looking around you at the familiar faces, for an escape - you felt your eyes lose focus. It felt like the whole room was swaying.
Someone was speaking at you but nothing was registering. The grip on your wrist the only thing you became aware of. The pain making you bite the inside of your cheek.
Then it felt like all eyes were on you, and still your mouth refused to function. No sound. The room swayed harder. The sounds became more muffled. You felt the pain on your wrist cease and that's when you bolted.
You hoped the words out of your mouth was some sort of excuse and not just panicked noise. Running. You were running. You didn't know where at first but your subconscious did. Muscle memory at its best. Falling back to the place you knew you could always escape to when things got too much. Shoving past people to get there fast.
Run! Just get out of here! Run!
Making it to the bathroom, you found an empty stall, thank fuck.
And then everything came out. All of the words that were said last night, all of the thoughts surrounding your head, the bruised skin on your wrist. All of the upset and the pain inside of you, you forced out through your mouth.
Once you had exhausted your body, it literally rejecting you to get rid of any more - you sat on the floor, quietly shaking. You hugged your hands around yourself and you whispered to yourself, "it's okay. It's gonna be okay. You're gonna be okay" over and over again until you would believe it.
Flashbacks to the mall and hiding from the men with guns with Robin and Steve. How you had felt so strong. And then your strength being removed from you when you saw the monstrous thing from the Upside Down in the centre of the mall. The place where you had just begun to be yourself.
The memories coming to the front of your mind in flashes. Hiding like a child. Holding yourself tight. Messy mascara falling down your tired cheeks. Billy stood there and him being teared apart. Max screaming-
You clamped your hands over your ears as if to drown out the noise. "No please no, I want to forget. I want to forget!" you half-choked out.
Remembering where you were, you quietened yourself down and went back to repeating the same thing over and over. The rest of school didn't matter. You just needed to be away from it all.
Wiping the snot from your nose on your sleeves. You rolled up both of them and looked at the two black and purple bruises, one for each wrist. You could see the indents from where his rings had embossed themselves into your skin.
Honestly, if it wasn't Eddie being the one to have done this, you would have killed the person who hurt you like this. But after everything you two had been through. And how he made you feel safe, even after the trauma of last summer.
But you never knew this side of Eddie. And you never thought he would be this way towards you.
A gentle knock from the bathroom stall door, woke you up from your thoughts. Pulling your sleeves back down, you managed a, "hello?" Your voice sounding shaky and tired.
"Is everything okay?" you heard Robin's voice on the other side. Sighing, thanful that it wasn't someone else but also taking a deep exhale trying to calm yourself down.
"Not really, no" You admitted, shakily reaching up and being just able to unlock the door without getting up fully.
The door slowly opened and Robin was there with Nancy. Seeing your face, she gave a kind smile and said, "I brought reinforcements"
Smiling back your tears returning to you except these were tears of love. Nancy held out her hand and Robin held out another and you were gently pulled to your feet by the both of them.
You were pulled into a tight hug by Nancy and you melted. Nancy wasn't the type to be physically affectionate. She was better with her words than anything. It just wasn't her love language, unlike Robin. But when you really needed a hug, Nancy would always be the first one to give it to you.
"I'm sorry-" you started to apologise but Robin shushed you gently, using a soft tissue to wipe away the dried tear stains under your eyes.
"Where do you wanna go? What do you wanna do?" Nancy asked you, looking at you directly. Her eyes filled with concern and love.
"I can't make you miss school" you looked a her worriedly.
"Oh please, anything to get out of science class with Mrs Bustleby." You heard Robin say from behind you. Her hands gently finger brushing your hair back in place.
"I wanna stay here with you guys. Wherever you go I go." Nancy looked at you, her brow furrowing as she grew more concerned. "Please." you pleaded.
You hadn't been this bad since everything that had happened. You couldn't be alone, you had stayed over at one of their houses [usually Steve's] because you couldn't sleep, the nightmares plaguing you everywhere you went.
"Okay" Nancy said finally, glancing down at your hands quickly before taking one hand and leading you outside the bathrooms.
As you opened the door you saw Steve leaning against a wall and talking with Jonathan. Both of them turned to look at you.
"You could have come in ya know" Robin said, teasing Steve. Now that you were back to focused reality, you were aware of how many people were in this corridor again. Your breathing was still shaky.
"I'm not a girl dumbass" Steve said, gesturing in a confused manner and raising his eyebrow at her.
"Never stopped you before" Nancy chimed in as to which Steve then shut up and almost went a bit red and Robin had the biggest grin on her face. Jonathan took a minute to process it before clapping Steve on the back as if to say 'You walked into that one'.
"Is everyone still at lunch or...?" You looked at Steve nervously. It's not like you were going to avoid Eddie. You just really didn't need to see him right now.
"He went off with the hellfire gang. I actually think Dustin took an emergency meeting. Kid's pretentious as fuck but he means well." You knew an 'emergency meeting' was used when it was to either talk about the Upside Down or deal with an issue.
"Part of me is kind of intrigued as to what they are saying." Robin said before realising that that would be a very bad idea.
"I'll find out later from Dustin. Or you will." He pointed at you.
Before you could ponder the thought, the bell rang. Signalling the end of lunch and soon to be science class. Steve, Robin and Nancy lead the front of the pack - as a protective shield to anyone not welcome and to guard you.
Jonathan walked beside you. Fidgeting with his hands he looked at you and then looked down, then looked back at your hands that were crossed, holding yourself up. "I've got a first aid in my car, for after school" he said quietly enough so that only the four of you could hear him.
You gave him a small smile. He then went back to being silent and you felt your breathing even out. You were just about to say thank you when you heard him say, "You have to leave him if it gets too bad. If he won't get help and he makes you empty promises, you have to leave before it gets worse."
You looked at him. You saw Nancy slightly straighten up. You didn't know Jonathan as well as the rest of the group, but you had grown closer in the last 12 months, along with Nancy. He was the only one who understand your situation with your parents. He understood and got Nancy to help get you into the trailer park when you moved out. He was one of the first to know how bad it was.
And here he was telling you the same piece of advice he told you then. You silently promised him, meeting his eyes with a look of sadness mixed with agreement. Then you both looked down as you walked into science class and managed to get the seats five seats at the back. You put your head down and dissolved into your dreamland, and for once, Eddie was not invited.
