Review: Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus (2002)
Tumblr media
Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus is one of those classic PS2 platformers that I had never actually played up until now. My first Sly game started at Sly 2: Band of Thieves.
I kind of went into this game expecting it to be not all that great just basing it off of some small bit of gameplay I had seen a few years ago, but I was pleasantly surprised. I went into it knowing that it plays somewhat differently than Sly 2, but I wasn't sure how different. This game plays like your more typical platformers, think Crash or Spyro, whereas Sly 2 is almost more mission-based. I really enjoyed that.
The level design in the game, for the most part, is good. I had a great time in the platforming levels. But because this is a platformer game in the early 2000s you know they can't just have a platformer game that consists of only platforming levels and that's where the horrible levels come in. There are a few different types of levels in this game other than platforming. You have your obvious turret levels, driving levels, twin-stick shooters, and boss fights. And almost all of them are horrible.
The driving missions involve you racing the van as Murray around a track three times to win a key. The controls are incredibly slippery and feel awful to use. To make it worse these are mandatory to progress. There are only a couple turret sections, but they involve you leading Murray to the end of a level and shooting any enemy that comes near him. Not the worse turret levels I've played, but a turret section is still a turret section. The twin-twin stick shooter levels have a few versions to them. The last one involves Bently "hacking" minigame which is improved upon in the next game. The first one involves you shooting 40 crabs to keep them from taking any chests. Annoying, boring, and just not fun.
The bosses. I think I really only enjoyed a single boss fight and that was the one against the Panda King. Maybe that's common since Panda Kind made a return in Sly 3. I genuinely felt like all of the bosses were poorly designed. I honestly have no idea how to beat Muggshot if you don't have the roll ability, something you unlock by finding clues throughout the levels. I say that because he shoots you almost the second he sees you and it's seemingly impossible to dodge without the roll. Clockwerk, while not broken by any means, was just another turret section, but this time with a jetpack. Not to mention he was one of the easiest bosses in the entire game.
I will say though, even though I didn't enjoy the boss fights, I really did enjoy each one of the characters. Except for Clockwerk. Now this is not the fault of the writers at Suckerpunch, this is all personal, but I honestly believe that this game ruined what I had always seen Clockwerk to be. As I said earlier, my first Sly game was Sly 2. In that game Clockwerk was not a character with a voice, he was purely just a character that was killed in the last game, and talked about as this horrible, intimidating thing that killed Sly's parents. You need to get back all the Clockwerk parts because in the wrong hands they can do horrible damage just because of how horrible Clockwerk is. He's the character that, unintentionally, paralyzed Bently So I've always seen Clockwerk as this intimidating monster that's been around forever. And then I get to the final level of this game only for him to sound the way he does, act the way he does, and genuinely ruin all expectations I ever had for him. Maybe I'm being too unfair, but that's just how I felt toward him.
Tumblr media
Either way with all that being said I did think that the game was great. There are a few things that really don't hold up, but the platforming is still great, and for the most part all the characters are great. The music, while not the iconic jazz we get in Sly 2, it's still great.

Thoughts:
The Eyes and the Impossible was, by far, the standout of the month. Told from the point of view of Johannes, a free dog living in an urban park (a thinly veiled Golden Gate Park in San Fransisco), who keeps the other animals in the park updated on the ongoings in the park. Featuring birds, and woodland creatures, and bison, and goats, and humans who change everything.
Dave Eggers wrote one of my all-time favorite books, A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius, and I have avoided reading any of his subsequent works for fear that they would be disappointing. I took a chance on this one since it's middle grade and quite a departure from his other works, and I'm so glad I did.

Have you been reading any good books recently? 🫶🏻 /N
Hi N, I'dd die for you!!! I haven't been reading much - actually, the only book I've read in 2024 so far is The Lightning Thief, which I loved. I want to read the rest of that series, and I really want to read the Shadow and Bone/Six of Crows books. And my partner desperately wants me to read Rob Halford's auto-biography because we're seeing Judas Priest in April!!
I do have a few book recs for things I've read previously though!! I'm yapping too much during this lil Q&A so I'll keep this to titles only, but just trust me, I could rant and rave about all these.
The Summer That Melted Everything by Tiffany McDaniel
Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson (my all-time fav book)
Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell
Sadie by Courtney Summers
I've also been trying to get more into non-fiction, so I read Lady Killers by Tori Teller and have been meaning to read Black Dahlia, Red Rose by Piu Eatwell because that case fascinates me. If you have any good non-fiction recs, I'd love to hear them cause I trust your judgement.
I also have Carrie by Stephen King, Circe by Madeline Miller, and The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid on my shelf to-be-read.

Editors’ Choice:
It’s summer in D.C., so today we’re recommending some of our favorite fics with the best of summer vibes for you to read beachside!
it's just a water view (and what a view) by mikaylawrites for JessBakesCakes | Rated M | Josh Lyman/Donna Moss | Complete | Now he thinks of the kids they’ve seen on this trip, chubby babies in unbelievably tiny hats and toddlers running through the tide on unsteady legs. They were cute, sure, but didn’t inspire any real paternal instinct in him. But then he conjures up images of babies with blonde hair and dimples, with his complexion and Donna’s eyes, and something catches in his chest. If he’s being honest, he’s imagined those babies for years.
Josh and Donna and their babies at the beach.
Shenandoah by hufflepuffhermione | Rated G | Gen Fic/No Pairings Listed | Complete | The President makes good on his threat of a staff field trip to Shenandoah National Park, Josh tries to prove he's an outdoorsman, Sam fights a bush, and Donna just tries to keep them all on schedule.
august, honey (you were mine) by sam_writes_fics | Rated M | Josh Lyman/Sam Seaborn | Complete | “Just Sam,” he answers, dropping his duffle bag off his shoulder and holding out his hand to shake. “Sam Seaborn.”
“Josh Lyman,” the other man says as he grasps Sam’s hand. “Looks like we’re bunk mates for the summer.”

if i had a wish (i'd wish for sunshine all the while) by JessBakesCakes for mikaylawrites  | Rated T | Josh Lyman/Donna Moss | Complete | “The parent who volunteered to coach Leah’s team ended up getting a job transfer. I know it’s short notice, but do you know of anyone who could possibly take that spot?”
// basically an excuse to write tee ball coach dad Josh Lyman.
heat of the moment by rearviewmirror | Rated M | Abbey Bartlet/Leo McGarry | Complete | "There’s another reason her innocent teasing hits home so acutely: he’s planning- and has been, for weeks now- what needs to be the greatest, most romantic gesture of his entire life."
all i ever wanted (was a life in your shape) by thefinestmuffins | Rated M | Josh Lyman/Donna Moss | Complete | Donna sighs and slumps further into her Adirondack chair, pretending to read her magazine, but keeps stealing glances at Josh. He sticks out like a sore thumb amidst her throng of brothers, who are, to a number, tall and broad and blond, with a wholesome, open-faced Midwestern quality. Even at 5’11”, Josh still looks slight amongst them, dark-headed and wiry, palpably radiating his particular brand of beltway cynicism. He’s been fully integrated into the Moss brood, though, with a train of children trailing in his wake all morning: she’s witnessed him happily tossing her nephews around, hoisting her niece up onto his back, sparring good-naturedly with her brothers about whether a pitch was a strike or a ball. And it’s a good thing, it really is — she’d worried he wouldn’t get along with her family and after a couple of hours they’re all thick as thieves — so why exactly does it feel like she’s been struck in the chest with a pickaxe?
Josh is dating Amy. And yet, here he is, in Wisconsin, winning over Donna's entire family and making her acutely aware of everything she doesn't have.
*songfic to Strawberry Blond by Mitski, for October 2021 Big Block of Cheese Day*
i’ll love you with all the madness in my soul by crossingdelancey | Rated T | C. J. Cregg/Toby Ziegler, Josh Lyman/Donna Moss, Abbey Bartlet/Jed Bartlet | Complete | Through the open window, he hears children giggling, and he figures they’ve taken breakfast outside for the second day in a row. They’ve been blessed with good weather this summer, with temperatures climbing daily. Toby isn’t pleased about that, and he insists he’ll burn, but CJ tells him to lighten up.
When he reaches to undo her towel, she slaps his wrist.

PATRIARCHS IN BLACK Capture Lightning in a Bottle with ‘My Veneration’
~Review by Tom Hanno~
Tumblr media
Today, PATRIARCHS IN BLACK releases their sophomore album, 'My Veneration' (2023), via MDD Records. For those of you who don't remember, Patriarchs In Black is the project spearheaded by guitarist Dan Lorenzo (Hades, Non-Fiction, Vessel of Light, Cassius King) and drummer Johnny Kelly (Type O Negative, Danzig, A Pale Horse Named Death, Kill Devil Hill, etc).
The band recruited a phenomenal roster of singers, who each do a song and sometimes more than one. For My Veneration they assembled an even more diverse group than they did for their initial outing, Reach For The Scars (review), and we're here to talk about what they accomplished for their return.
youtube
"Dead or Dying" by Patriarchs In Black
The album opens up with "Dead Or Dying," a track that features the vocal stylings of Karl Agell (ex-Corrosion Of Conformity) and the bass playing of Dave Neabore. As expected, this song is the perfect way to kick off the album.
I've always loved what Karl does vocally, and he doesn't disappoint here. The music is influenced by the Doom and Stoner genres, and the rhythm section underneath is rock solid. I challenge you to not move for the duration of the song, but I'll tell you now that the power of the groove will make that impossible to achieve.
"Veneration" by Patriarchs In Black
The first single was "Veneration," which features Mark Sunshine (Unida) on vocals, as well as the rhyming of the one and only D.M.C., otherwise known as Darryl McDaniels of hip-hop legends, Run D.M.C. Also featured is Emma Smoler, who contributed some beautiful violin work.
The song itself has touches of Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath, and a ton of groove; particularly during the sections where D.M.C takes over. The vocals of Mark Sunshine are incredible, as he conjured up a serious Robert Plant vibe, and then mixed it with pieces of the Grunge era. Overall, this track is one of the best on the album.
"Non-Defectum" by Patriarchs In Black
"Non-Defectum" is immediately after "Veneration," and continues the groove factor while also having a bit of a hip hop flow during the verse sections.
Kelly Abe contributed a diverse vocal performance, and it is one of the highlights of this album in my opinion. As always, Dan puts in the perfect guitar parts, while Johnny and Eric J. Morgan (bass) hold everything together by using their talents to full effect.
"Lust For Lies" by Patriarchs In Black
"Lust For Lies" is another track that I gravitated towards, and it features vocalist Rob Traynor and Johnny Araya on bass, and yes, he's the brother of Slayer's Tom Araya.
There is a literal ton of Black Sabbath influence throughout this song, and that is mostly thanks to what Dan does on guitar; he pulls out the perfect blend of Doom Metal and groove. The vocals are fairly diverse, which helps add another layer to this killer tune.
Other standout tracks include "My Veneration," "Crooked Smile," and a cover of Black Sabbath's "Hole In The Sky."
The album is only two days away from release as of this writing, so go to Bandcamp and check out the single of "Veneration" and prepare yourselves for the full album. Enjoy!

WTNV quick rundown - 84 - Past Time
Featuring the voice of Jackson Publick as Hiram McDaniels.
Dress for success. Put on your tall hat and rubber gloves and long, gray coat. Success requires this specific outfit. Welcome to Night Vale.
Cecil and Steve have been helping Janice train for softball, which she loves. She went to tryouts at the haunted baseball diamond in hopes of joining NV's first wheelchair softball team.
Coach Lusia Tereshchenko (the ghost) states that there have been many Strangers watching the tryouts. She firmly believes that they are not from DB and are not ghosts. She hints that they 'remind her of the men on the train'. It turns out she came to NV decades ago, 'old west' time, after accidentally helping some outlaws attempt to rob a train of the same crates You were in charge of loading and unloading. They are fired upon by the sheriff of NV at the time and Lusia tries to help the sheriff but is ultimately killed. As she dies/becomes a ghost she sees the Dark Planet.
She also says that the train used to run by a field, which kids used to play baseball on, so she learnt to love the game and eventually get good at coaching it. She is also the reason it's referred to as the 'haunted baseball diamond'.
She says that the men on the train were evil in a different way to the strangers. She also says that Cecil used to play softball, but he doesn't remember that.
As they leave, Cecil sees the boy in the hoodie and the beagle puppy which gives him a bad feeling once more.
Weather: "The River, The Woods" Astronautalis
During a segment of Hey There Cecil, Cecil informs somebody that quartz chips and dead pheasant have not been legal tender since the 90's which is why their landlord is mad about rent payments. He also receives a note from somebody who pet Maureen and the boy in the hoodie's beagle puppy and after that had terrible nightmares about the puppy which resulted in them throwing up black tar. Still, they want to know if they should get a dog. Cecil says yes but they seem to be allergic to beagles. Carlos also sends a Hey There Cecil asking for a date. Cecil accepts.
Hiram's Violet head calls and tells Cecil that he will no longer be a witness against himself, but will stand with his other heads because he cannot continue to fight against himself. Hiram also states that NV needs his protection against the strangers who are absolutely not just people from DB but even his probably couldn't defeat them.
Stay tuned next for something lurking just outside your window. Don't worry. It's not a human. And as always, good night, Night Vale. Good Night.

Welcome to Fall's End
Montana: Big sky country, treasure state... The perfect place to live, according to many. For decades it was peaceful - many residents can attest to that. Things turn sour, however, when a new family arrives in town: The Seed's. People start to go missing, or turn up dead. Houses burned. Businesses robbed. Follow residents, old and new, as they learn to survive the new battlefield that is Hope County.

Hidden deep in the Whitetail Mountains, Amy broadcasts news from the outside world to the rest of Hope County - and she also supplies them with some actually decent music, something Eden's Gate clearly doesn't have.

A Silent Night in Vegas: Josh Jacobs' Absence Casts a Shadow Over Raiders' Christmas Clash with Chiefs
The lights of Las Vegas twinkled brighter than ever on Christmas Day, but a somber mood hung over Allegiant Stadium as the Raiders prepared for their annual showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs. The familiar rumble of the crowd lacked its usual festive fervor, muted by the absence of a key figure - the heart and soul of the Raiders offense, Josh Jacobs.
Jacobs, the hard-nosed running back who had carried the Silver and Black through thick and thin, was ruled inactive for the game due to a nagging quad injury and an undisclosed illness. It was a cruel twist of fate, robbing the Christmas clash of its signature star power and leaving a gaping hole in the Raiders' offensive game plan.
The implications were immediate and far-reaching. Jacobs wasn't just any player; he was the Raiders' bell cow, the engine that drove their ground attack, and the emotional spark plug that ignited their fighting spirit. His absence cast a long shadow, stretching from the hushed locker room to the anxious fans in the stands.
Head Coach Josh McDaniels, ever the stoic leader, tried to rally his troops. He emphasized the "next man up" mentality, urging the team to compensate for Jacobs' loss with collective effort. But replacing a player like Jacobs is no easy feat. His blend of power, speed, and elusive jukes is a rare commodity in the NFL, and his leadership qualities are even more precious.
Without Jacobs, the Raiders offense looked like a ship without its anchor. The running game, usually a source of strength, sputtered and stalled. The offensive line, accustomed to opening running lanes for Jacobs, struggled to find rhythm without his decisive cuts and bursts of speed. Quarterback Derek Carr, deprived of his safety valve and reliable check-down option, found himself under constant pressure from the Chiefs' ferocious defense.
The frustration was palpable. Each dropped pass, each thwarted rush, each stalled drive felt like a missed opportunity, a painful reminder of the void left by Jacobs' absence. The Christmas spirit, usually bubbling over in the Las Vegas air, seemed to dissipate under the weight of disappointment.
Yet, amidst the gloom, there were glimmers of hope. Young running back Zamir White, thrust into the starting role, showed flashes of his potential. He ran with determination, fighting for every yard, and even managed to break free for a handful of electrifying runs. Wide receiver Davante Adams, ever the reliable target, stepped up with some clutch catches, keeping the Raiders in the game.
And then, in the final minutes of the fourth quarter, with the score tied and tension hanging thick in the air, the Raiders found their fighting spirit. A gritty defensive stand, a heads-up play by special teams, and a perfectly executed final drive culminated in a game-winning field goal as the clock ticked down.
The victory, however, felt bittersweet. It was a triumph of resilience, but it was also a stark reminder of the irreplaceable value of Josh Jacobs. The Christmas clash may have ended with a festive cheer, but the absence of the Raiders' star running back left a lingering feeling of what could have been.
As the players celebrated their hard-fought victory, their thoughts inevitably drifted to Jacobs. His empty locker, a silent testament to his absence, served as a poignant reminder of the team's dependence on its fallen hero. And as the Christmas lights dimmed and the stadium emptied, one question hung in the air: When will Josh Jacobs return, and will the Raiders be the same without him?
The answer remains a mystery, but one thing is certain: the Raiders' Christmas clash with the Chiefs was a night of missed opportunities, bittersweet triumphs, and the silent echoes of a missing star. It was a night that reminded everyone, in the bright lights of Las Vegas, that even on Christmas, the game of football can be a cruel mistress, taking away its heroes just as quickly as it grants them glory.

Daredevil #314
Bad.
Mr. Fear’s daughter!
The plot is okay. Mr. Fear is attacked in prison, his daughter robs a guy and DD tracks her down. There’s too much heavy-handed narration and overly-wordy dialogue. It never sounds like real people talking so it's impossible to get into the story.
On Sale Date: January 5, 1993.
Wizard Top 100: #86.
D.G. Chichester (21 of 38).
Scott McDaniel (10 of 26).
3/10

Gronkowski: Josh McDaniels' Style Only Worked Under Bill Belichick
It's very interesting to see that former players who once played under Josh McDaniels are not exactly shocked by this week's firings by Raiders owner Mark Davis. In particular, Super Bowl champ and all-around superstar Rob Gronkowski had some interesting things to say.

Does Rob Walton Have Buyers’ Remorse with the Broncos?
It’s a privilege owning an NFL Team. Such a privilege that only 32 of the most privileged mother fuckers on the planet get to call a franchise their own. Yet in the case of Rob Walton and the Walton-Penner Family Ownership Group, this purchase has aged about as poorly as an investment with Sam Bankman-Fried.
Between Sean Payton and Russell Wilson, this franchise has spent 3 First Round Picks, 3 Second Round Picks, and about a Quarter of a Million Dollars to build the worst team in the NFL. Having started 0-3, they are well on their way to their 8th consecutive season without a playoff appearance and Russ is under contract through 2029. Today we’ll take a look at all of the Broncos’ most recent woes (which is becoming a bit of a tradition on our page, see the links below for our previous Broncos’ takes laughing at their misfortunes).
What better place to start delving through the Broncos’ misery than:
Losing in Historic Fashion by Allowing the Most Points in a Game in 57 Years
To say the Broncos are off to a rough start would be the understatement of the century. Two seasons in a row, this team has come into the year with hopes of an offensive revelation to complement their (once) stout Defense. Last year it was in the form of former Super Bowl Champion Russell Wilson, this year in the form of former Super Bowl Champion Sean Payton. On paper that sounds like a combination that could set the league on fire. So what has that looked like so far?
In Week 1 they held the Jimmy G led Raiders to 17 points and lost a close one. Ok, a tight division game, nothing to panic about. Then in Week 2, they gave up 35 points after jumping out to a commanding (😉) 21-3 lead and lost a shootout to the Commanders’ team that Buffalo basically shut out last weekend. Well that’s a little concerning, but hey it’s still early. And then in Week 3, a little trip to Florida ended as most trips to Florida do: in complete disaster with everyone involved questioning all of their life choices.
To say the Dolphins blew out the Broncos hardly seems a fitting characterization of that ill-fated Week 3 Contest. It was more than Miami simply dominating Denver, they flat out gave them the Danny Masterson treatment. 10 Total Touchdowns, 726 total yards of Offense, and the only reason this wasn’t the worst loss of all time is because Mike McDaniel showed Sean Payton mercy…..eventually. We would be remiss if we didn’t also credit Vance Joseph for this defensive performance who rejoined the team as their DC after years of disappointing Broncos’ fans as a Head Coach! This humiliating loss of course led to
Payton Getting Chippy with Reporters
Maybe we’re wrong, but Sean Payton didn’t seem overly enthusiastic at his most recent post game presser. In fact, one might go so far as to say he didn’t want anything to do with the media in that moment. That may just be us speculating, but Payton was quick to cut off a reporter who simply wanted to highlight the significance of this historic occasion.
Which seems odd, given how chatty Payton was in his offseason interview with USA Today in which he called Hackett’s stint as Denver’s Head Coach last year “one of the worst coaching jobs in the history of the NFL.” Not sure where this campaign ranks in comparison to that, but if a genius like Payton just lost by 50, just imagine how bad things must have been under Hackett. Luckily, you can always rely on the fans for a calm, level-headed, rational perspective in these situations. So let’s take a look at social media to see what poignant feedback we can find from Broncos’ Country.
The Fans’ Takes
“FIRE VANCE JOSEPH” -@basically70%ofthecomments
“Who was like ‘hey Vance Joseph sounds like a good idea again!’ “ -@xbrichx
“Well done today guys! Now I get bullied by my friends for the rest of the season because of how bad you guys are again!!!” -@cmhoward23
“Fire this entire team” -@broncosfan_68
“Vance Joseph has literally destroyed our top 5 defense in 3 weeks” -@sean_showard
“what the fuck kind of “locking in” 70 BALLED BY MIAMI….” -@hunteradams8048
“Get off social media until you can prove to your fans that you can actually win a game. Traded our future to win now, the one season you will finish last, and not have a draft pick” -@pittdaddy_11
“Y’all too embarrassed to post the FINAL this time? Good…cause y’all are EMBARRASSING 🙄 Throw the whole team away and start over at this point 😂” -@ashgonzalez25
“Sean Payton is Urban Meyer 2.0” -@jesuslovesyou316
Ok well, that just didn’t go well at all. Let’s look to a former Pro Bowler, current Florida State Coach, and father of one of Denver’s star players for a more reasonable take on the situation:
“Toiling in the soil!!! SMH 2 you deserve better” -Patrick Surtain Sr.
Yikes this is going South fast. And to make matters worse this horrendous start is leading to:
Fire Sale Rumors
The one thing that can turn around a struggling program is buy in from the players and belief in the system. Well the Broncos’ Defense visibly quit on the field last Sunday and teams that start 0-3 have about a 2.5% chance of making the playoffs.
Sprinkle in comments like the one from Patrick Surtain Sr., growing discontent from the fans, & a division ran by the dynastic Chiefs and it’s easy to see why a team going nowhere fast might want to recoup some of that wasted draft capital to try to be competitive by 2030. The Waltons surely had higher expectations when they agreed to purchase the team. They expected to be competing in the Super Bowl and instead they are now competing in:
The Caleb Williams’ Bowl
That’s right, while the Broncos are off to a historically bad start, they aren’t the only team vying for the first overall pick in the 2024 draft. Much like the Broncos, the Chicago Bears came into the season full of optimism that their Quarterback and their Offense would take a significant step forward. Also like the Broncos, that delusional drug-induced pipe dream never came to fruition.
Many thought Justin Fields would follow in the footsteps of Jalen Hurts, develop as a thrower with a true No.1 Receiver, and become an MVP Caliber player. Instead, Fields ranks 29th in Passing Yards, has thrown the 3rd most interceptions, and ranks 34th in QBR at 21.3.
Week 4 will be the ultimate test to see what wins out between the Broncos’ inept Defense and The Bears’ impotent Offense with a shot at a franchise altering Quarterback on the line (stop me if you’ve heard this one before). While we most certainly won’t be tuning in for that flaming shitbag of a game, you can bet that Rob Walton and his Ownership Group will be watching every snap just praying that Sean Payton fucks this one up too so they might be able to dangle a shiny USC Quarterback in front of season ticket holders and start recouping their investment in 2024.
