Hey Brother
Now with a Part 2!
Thank you to @nburkhardt, @doubleb11, and @straight4joekeery for the help brainstorming! I hope you guys like it and please leave your thoughts in the comments!
~*~*~*~
It was a quiet night at the trailer park and Steve was looking forward to spending a peaceful night with his boyfriend. Things had been hectic lately between work, the kids, and fielding phone calls from his parents so Steve desperately needed a night to just relax. He hadn’t been able to spend time with Eddie since the week prior during their weekly Buckley-Harrington-Munson movie night and if he didn’t get cuddles stat, he was going to go into withdrawal.
Unfortunately, Eddie did not share the same plans and instead was trying to coerce Steve once again into joining a DnD campaign with him and the kids.
“Come on, babe! The first day of the new campaign is tomorrow and the kids would love it if you joined. We can come up with a character sheet tonight, we still have time! And I will help you the entire time, it’ll be fun!” Eddie begged him.
Steve shook his head, “look Eds, I really don’t want to play. I’m more than happy just watching you guys have fun. Besides, you know how bad I am at math. I’d be really bad at it.”
“I’ll do the math for you! Come on, your jock prowess will really help you and you’re great at strategizing. What if I postponed the campaign for tomorrow and came up with a one shot instead? Then you would get your feet wet and it wouldn’t be too much pressure,” he jut his lip out in a pout and widened his eyes. It kinda made him look like a dejected rat but in a cute way.
Still, Steve shook his head. “No, I really don’t want to. Can you please drop this? I just want to watch a movie or something and relax. I don’t want to keep talking about your nerd game.”
All playful pretenses dropped and Eddie’s eyes narrowed. “Is that what this is about? The perfect Steve Harrington can’t play a game for nerds? I thought you were over all that.”
“Eddie, that’s not why. You know I don’t care about that anymore. I like watching you guys play, I just don’t understand it. Maybe some other time,” Steve placated him but it only served to make Eddie more mad.
“That’s bullshit, Steve!” Steve’s blood ran cold at his words. “You don’t think the ‘perfect jock’ can play a nerd game? That’s just complete bullshit.”
Steve just stood up from the couch and collected his keys from the table beside the door. He turned to look at Eddie and spoke softly, “I’m sorry you feel that way. I’m going to go home.”
“Steve-”
“No, no, it’s uh- it’s just bullshit, right? I’ll catch you later.” Then, he went to his car and headed home. So much for a relaxing evening.
How could things have changed so quickly? One second they were enjoying pizza and talking about dumb shit the kids had done in the past week and in the next they were arguing about nerds and jocks, the dumb shit from high school that didn’t mean anything. It’s all such… bullshit. He thought he was over all of that meaningless high school drama yet here he was. He was still messing things up without even trying. He should’ve just sucked it up and agreed to play the dumb game instead of ruining their night. No wonder Eddie was so mad at him.
When Steve got home, it was to a dark and empty house. He was alone once again with his parents on some trip, his boyfriend mad at him, his best friend out of town, and the kids no longer needing a babysitter. He hated this cavernous house, the bareness on the walls, and the emptiness that matched the feelings in his chest. He just wanted to go somewhere else, to be welcomed into another house that wasn’t so devoid of character. He thought that would be Eddie’s trailer but he wasn’t so sure anymore.
He was torn from his thoughts at the ring of the landline. Steve considered not answering it, thinking it may be Eddie trying to apologize or rag on him some more. After his comments of being bullshit, Steve thought he deserved some pettiness. Ultimately though, the Midwestern politeness ingrained in him pushed Steve to answer the call. “Harrington residence, this is Steve. How can I help you?”
“Steve? Oh honey, I’m so sorry to be calling,” a tearful voice murmured.
It took Steve a moment to place the voice but when he did, a strum of anxiety skittered across his chest. “Aunt Becky? What’s going on, are you okay?”
“Sweetheart, it’s your grandmother. She’s in critical condition and the doctors say she could pass at any time now. I already called your parents and they’re on their way. Honey, if you want to see her, you should come now.”
Steve’s heart dropped. His mother’s mother, his grandma, had always been his favorite. She babysat him when he was younger, called him every few weeks to check in, and sent him the most thoughtful presents on his birthday and Christmas. Despite the chaos of his personal life at the moment, he had to go see her. He wouldn’t be able to live with himself if he didn’t get to say goodbye to her after all she’d done for him.
“Um, okay. I’ll head up there now and I can be there in a few hours. Do you-do you need anything?” He asked his aunt.
“No, that’s okay. Drive safe and let your brother know, okay?”
Steve nodded in response before remembering that she couldn’t see him. “I’ll call him. See you soon.”
Steve hung up the phone before immediately picking it back up to call his brother. They weren’t close, especially after the events of Spring Break, but they were still family and he deserved the chance to say goodbye to his grandmother as well. There was no answer on his home phone so Steve dialed 9-1-1.
“Hawkins Sheriff Department, this is Officer Callahan. What’s your emergency?”
“Phil, it's Steve. I know we’re not really talking but Grandma is dying tonight and I’m going to Illinois to say goodbye. Can you please come with me?”
“Wha- Steve? How do you know? What happened?” Phil stammered.
“Aunt Becky called, she says that Grandma is in critical condition and the doctors say that she could die at any time. If we want to see her, we have to go now.” Steve’s voice was panicked as he spoke.
“Um- yeah. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I’ll uh, I just need to write a note and I’ll come pick you up, okay? I’ll be there in ten minutes,” his brother comforted, his voice gentle over the phone.
“Okay, bye.”
Steve rubbed a hand through his hair. Could this night get any worse? Not only was he on Eddie’s shit list, his grandma was dying, and now he had to sit in a car for four hours with his estranged, older step-brother. Lovely that this was how Steve’s life was going, just lovely.
He threw some clothes in a bag along with his hair care products and a toothbrush and then he sat on the trunk of his car in the driveway waiting for Phil. He didn’t know how long he would be gone but he’d rather be prepared. On the fifteenth minute of waiting, Phil’s powder blue Volkswagen Beetle pulled up to the curb and his brother’s head popped out of the open window.
“Let’s go, shitface! We don’t have time to waste!” He called obnoxiously.
Steve grumbled as he got into the car but quieted when Phil handed him a coffee.
“... Thanks.”
“Don’t mention it,” he waved away.
They drove in silence for a few minutes until they passed the Leaving Hawkins sign and Steve spoke up. “I hate the mustache by the way.”
“Why would you say that to me?!”
“It looks like an emaciated squirrel died on your face!” Steve said.
“That’s rich of you to say when you have so much hair it looks like a helmet!” Phil’s voice raised in defense.
“That doesn’t even make sense!” Steve sputtered.
They squabbled the entire four hour drive to Illinois and it brought a feeling of levity to Steve’s chest. Despite the circumstances, he felt better than he had in a while and all it took was minorly bullying his brother to get there.
~*~*~*~
Hopper has never been so confused in his life and that was saying something because he’s gone through some major shit. But getting woken up at the dredges of dawn to a panicked Eddie Munson showing up at his door would do that. Almost at the point of tears, he told him that Steve was missing after a fight they had the night prior and he was worried that something might have happened to him.
Hopper had to deal with Munson knocking on his door before appropriate business hours, the kids panicking because of Steve maybe going missing, and Joyce panicking that something could be going on with the Upside Down. Why else would Steve go missing?
Things only got more complicated and confounding when he arrived at the station to see a poorly written note from Callahan stuck to his desk. It read, ‘me + brother out of town, gma is sick. B back soon. Toodles.’
So now not only is his kid missing, but he’s also down a deputy, and he’s got the Party breathing down his neck annoying him about it.
Hopper took a big swig of his coffee and sighed, this was going to be a long weekend.

Zane Callahan, Son of Phil Callahan;
Tumblr media
Trigger warnings; Mental health issues, childhood trauma, Implied PTSD, etc.
His full name is Zane Eugene Callahan.
His dad is Phil Callahan and his parents divorced when he was young.
He was three years old when Steve died and is now twenty.
He is still in high school however because he missed a lot of school due to multiple suspensions he got for being 'violent' towards other students.
What nobody with tell you is that he got those suspensions for protecting his friends and that he doesn't regret it no matter how sorry he acts around authority figures.
He is usually very respectful and obedient but he has no problem doing the opposite when it concerns the safety of his friends and family.
Due to his obsession with army and government stuff, the upside down crew has grown slightly wary of him but Zane doesn't practically care because he has big plans and will not stop till the people responsible for the whole Upside Down nonsense are held accountable for their actions. He is hellbent on cleaning up the government and won't stop—even when and if it kills him.
He has a whole 'army brat' aesthetic going on that is due to how strict and overprotective his dad was of him growing up. He had it drilled in his head as a kid that if he loves somebody then he has to protect them and do what's best for them, and not leave if he can help it (he was raised not to make the same mistakes his dad did with his uncle).
Zane resembles his Uncle Steve quite a bit despite having short black hair and has been called Steve by his dad (on a couple of occasions) and by his granddad the only time he ever met him.
He has very vague memories of Steve that he isn't very sure are real since he only met him a few times before he died.
He loves country and classical music, and tolerates everything else.
Zane also loves puzzles.
He is good at fighting and knows how to use quite a few things as weapons that are not weapons.
He also knows how to use a lot of actual weapons because he is a fast learner.
And don't tell his dad but he also knows how to pick locks and hot wire a car due to seeing someone in the party due both on several occasions after forgetting the keys to their van.
On a completely unrelated note, he has a crush on Lyra Munson but it too shy to ask her out.
Out of his cousins, he is the closest to Stewart because they're both perceived as the 'obedient but forgettable' Harrington kids.
He likes camping, fishing, hunting, woodshop, bird watching, and puzzles.
He is in Rotc at school.
Zane also knows every law in every state by heart and has found a loop hole in several of them for 'research purposes'.
Oh and he has a police radio that he uses to listen in on the Hawkins P.D radio frequency that his dad doesn't know about.
He loves dry humor and uses it (as well as subtle insults) often.
He is not as innocent as people tend to think him to be.
He is very stubborn and protective as well as stern when he needs to be, often coming off as cold and uncaring to those who don't know him well.
Zane is also a total gossip and has black mail on everyone he is very willing to release if he is pushed enough.
He lives with his dad.
He is fast on his feet and a quick learner.
He is also very good at playing dumb and sniffing out fake friends as well as danger. It has saved his and his friends and cousins' asses on more than one occasion.
His favorite colors are green and brown.
He has a police tape backpack.
Also he and Stephanie may or may not share a love of explosives but if you ask or point this out, he will deny it.
Also Zane has just barely managed to escape getting arrested on more than one occasion—the adults in his life are oblivious to this.
Devansh is his best friend.
Devansh is also how he found out about the upside down—because his powers developed when he was around Zane and then Kali had to explain it to both of them before they told the others.
He is good at getting away with things because people assume he’s the good one who ‘behaves rank and file’ when in reality he’s just good at hiding how he actually is—which the other Next Gen kids find really funny and really unfair at the same time.
Zane's protective streak and semi-serious nature really drives his friends and cousins nuts sometimes.
Note:
These headcanons take place in my Stranger Things au 'Cats in the Cradle'. In that au, Tommy and Carol are left to raise Steve's four infant children with the help of the Upside Down Crew, Steve's half brother, Steve's younger cousin, and their collective families.  In that au, Jason and Eddie live.  Max is less seriously injured.  Phil Callahan is Steve's older half brother. And Chrissy, her brother, and Fred Benson were Steve's cousins.  Oh and Steve hooked up with one of his pre-nancy girlfriends and after his death she found herself pregnant with quads that Steve never got to meet. Hope that clears up any confusion regarding these ocs and headcanons.

I can’t believe there’s no fic out there where Steve and Callahan are related somehow. I think they look similar enough that they could be related and I’ve got two ways you can go about it.
(1) Callahan is Steve’s uncle and the worst think this goofy cop has to deal with on a semi-regular basis is his sister’s asshole kid. He can’t even complain about it because his sister is never in town. Phil’s nickname when he was a kid was Noodle so Steve calls him Officer Noodles even after he cleans up his act.
(2) Callahan is Steve’s brother from his mom’s previous marriage and once she married Steve’s dad, she stopped acting like a mom towards Phil. They have a lot of resentment towards each other and it’s frustrating that Phil feels like he can’t give Steve a speeding ticket because he knows what kind of man his father is. He does get extremely jealous when Steve gets close with Hopper because the kid has already stolen his mom, now he’s taking his mentor too? Steve still calls his Officer Noodles.

Inspired by some posts I've seen on my dash recently that had me THINKING... So imagine with me for a moment
Callahan is actually Phillip Callahan Harrington. Just. Picture it for a second...
He's born 8 1/2 months after [what's his name] Harrington marries his highschool sweetheart right out of highschool in a beautiful but kind of rushed ceremony. They immediately jet off on some months long honeymoon trip across Europe then stop in New York to visit the extended Harrington clan and come back to Hawkins with a bouncing baby boy. It is a well known secret that obviously [have they named her yet] Harrington nee [Idk, Callahan? To explain Phil's middle name] was pregnant when they got married and they tried to hide it but that's the sort of thing you just can't hide in a small town.
Life goes on and Adultering Asshole Harrington has a near miss with a young secretary so Mrs. Socialite Save Face Harrington decides they should have another baby. Especially since their first son was not living up to Harrington expectations. So they have Steve. Phil isn't sure about the baby they bring home just after Christmas (Or Halloween? Not sure which I like better tbh) but Mom says babies make families happy so maybe mom and dad will argue less.
They don't. Phil tries to protect his baby brother best he can but there's only so much he can do when the kid refuses to see what pieces of shit their parents are. As soon as he turns 18 he does what he needs to join the police force because his father seemed to hate that he could never buy the Hawkins police department and Phillip wants that. He wants to be able to tell his father no and know that the man just has to accept it.
He stays in touch with Steve who asks why his name tag by his badge says Callahan (his middle name) and he tells his baby brother that he wants as little to do with their folks as possible. Life goes on and Jim Hopper comes back to town in '79 just as his folks basically leave for good. He's 23 and Steve is just turned 13 and he does what he can to help the kid, stays over most weekdays only heading to his small apartment when Steve has groups of friends over or the two brothers just need some space from each other. By the time Steve is a Junior (about 16/17) Phil is only staying over when Steve asks or if the chief and Powell are on his case about the parties his kid brother, "King Steve" as they've heard some of the youth calling him, keeps throwing and the only way he knows to make sure Steve doesn't host a rager is if the kid knows he's in the house.
Then Will Byers goes missing shortly followed by the Holland girl. Nancy Wheeler confesses the two girls were at a small 'party' at the Harrington place and Phil isn't able to intercept Flo before she calls his folks, he calls Steve to warn him their parents might be making a visit once the secretary forwards Flo's message about Steve's peripheral involvement in the case

Masterlist || Chapter 2
Tumblr media
Your hands stung as you adjusted your hold on the ax yet again before striking the nth piece of wood for the day and watched as it split in two and rolled into your feet. You bent down to pick up the pieces and threw them in the huge pile next to you.
It was around that time in District Seven when you all had to prepare and chop trees for the winter and send pile after pile to the other Districts. As if creating furniture and providing other commodities wasn't enough, you had to make sure the others stayed warm during the cold months, and because it was such a long, tedious process you had to start in the middle of the summer so you could finish by mid-autumn. Thankfully, they had their own woods and they weren't expecting supplies solely from your District which was good because otherwise, this would have surely been the end of your forests. It was still a pain in the ass that you had to deal with this on top of everything else.
Someone hissed on your left and you quickly turned to look at them, noticing no other than your own brother dropping a piece of wood and grabbing his hand.
"Did you get a splinter in again?" you asked and he nodded as he tried to pull it out. "Will, how many times have I told you to not come chopping wood? You're still little," you sighed as you neared the boy and crouched in front of him, taking his smaller hand in yours and plucking out the irritable tiny menace that used to bugger you all the time back when you first began actively learning to work with wood and axes.
"But I wanna help," he pouted and you chuckled, ruffling his hair.
"You're doing more than enough already, little fawn."
"C’mon, you two. No slacking. Finish your piles and let's go home," called out Jonathan from somewhere across and you rolled your eyes.
"Aye, aye, captain!"
Soon after, you were all done and washing your hands under the cool water flowing from the stream nearby. And before long, you were happily heading for the comforts of your home alongside the rest of the workers, ignoring the couple of Peacekeepers who were escorting you. Thankfully, the Peacekeepers in your District were not violent and your people even communicated with some of them, like Officer Phil Callahan and Officer Calvin Powell who were very sweet and even dorky.
It was that time of the day, right at the vanishing of twilight, when it was getting darker but there was still a bit of light peeking from the horizon, and the whole sky was painted in shades of blue and purple, mixing together perfectly – something your district loved to call the hour of Delphi, named after the flower Delphinium for its exact shades of blues and purples.
The coos of Mourning Doves echoed all around you, carried by the wind that ruffled the trees’ leaves and sprinkled them throughout the air. Jonathan caught one and placed it on his fist, slamming his palm against it. The clapping noise drew your attention to him and when he removed his palm to show off the hole he had created in the leaf, you and Will rolled your eyes but laughed nonetheless.
“Look,” you whispered excitedly as you squeezed Will’s shoulder and leaned a bit, pointing towards the woods. “Forest stars.”
“Those are called fireflies,” he giggled.
“But it’s much more magical to call them forest stars! It almost feels like we’re living in an enchanted forest!”
“One can dream.”
Tumblr media
Sometimes you did feel like you were living in an enchanting forest. Sure, you had tons of work to do and your District wasn’t exactly the richest as compared to One, Two, and Four, but you weren’t poor either. You were in the “golden middle” as some would say, and most of the people were somewhat satisfied with their way of life. It really did help that you were surrounded by nature. Ever since you were a child you’ve felt like your District was the luckiest for being surrounded by so much greenery, gorgeous sceneries, beautiful flowers, useful plants, and majestic animals. If one could forget about the Capitol, the tedious labor, and the looming games of death, it almost did seem like living in an enchanted forest.
“At last,” exhaled Jonathan once your house came into view. “I can’t wait to wash all this filth off,” he groaned.
You crossed the wooden bridge over the river and walked down the little pathway that led to your cottage’s entrance. You took your dirty shoes off and left them on the porch before entering.
“We’re home!”
“Welcome home!” greeted your mother as she rushed to hug each one of you, making you arch an eyebrow at the sight of her stained apron.
“What are you making for dinner?”
“Bread and jam, and,” she drawled, “jam and bread!”
“The smell says otherwise,” commented Jonathan.
“Okay, so it’s stew.”
“Yes! My favorite!” exclaimed Will and you chuckled.
“Bathroom is all mine,” you told Jonathan and you could see his eyes widen and fill with challenge. Before anyone could say anything, the two of you bolted for the room, almost tripping and bumping into each other. In the end, you won and slammed the door in your brother’s face, making him groan after you let out a triumphant ‘Whoop’.
Tumblr media
After dinner, you retreated to the small balcony on the second floor. Sitting on the railing and swinging your legs back and forth, you enjoyed the warm summer breeze, the quiet sound of the flowing river, and the sight of the big willow tree in front of your house with multiple fireflies floating around.
“You’ve been distracted today,” came Jonathan’s voice from behind and you gave him a look over your shoulder.
“You know how I get around that time of the year,” you murmured and he sighed, coming to sit by your side.
“Yeah, I know…The Reaping is tomorrow.”
“We’ll have to dress all nice and pristine with flowers and pretty hairstyles and all that bullshit just to parade ourselves in front of all these cameras. And then they’re gonna pick two of us. Pigs for slaughter,” you huffed.
It was indeed quite so peculiar how one of the few times you could get to feel pretty, neat, and polished, was when you had to play the role of a sacrificial lamb, solely and purely for the entertainment of rich, pompous, pampered, brainwashed tomfools.
“You’re not saying that kind of stuff in front of other people…right?” your brother asked a bit worriedly and you shut your eyes in exasperation.
“Of course not Jonathan. Do you think me stupid? That I’ll just go out there and start saying all that? Risk being accused of a traitor or a rebel and be taken by the Peacekeepers and most importantly put you all in danger?” you asked incredulously and he lifted his hands in surrender.
“You know I didn’t mean it like that. I just…can’t help but worry sometimes.”
“I know…I know…”
“Look, you don’t have to worry about tomorrow, ok? Everything is going to be fine.”
“Easy for you to say. Last year was your last as a potential Tribute. But me and Will-”
“Hey,” he interrupted you and made you look at him. “Everything is going to be fine,” he accentuated each word as he tried to seep as much reassurance into you as possible and you sighed, grabbing his hand to seek more comfort which he gladly gave while scooching closer to you and wrapping an arm around your shoulders.
You leaned on him and the two of you fell into silence, watching the trickling water and thinking about the way time moved just like it.
You did not want the morrow to come but it was unavoidable and you had to make your peace with it.
Tumblr media
You were silent as you helped Will prepare, handing him a white shirt and black pants to put on, while your mother and Jonathan were busy making breakfast – already having dressed.
“It’s my first year,” whispered the boy suddenly and you tried to give him an encouraging smile.
“It is. But that’s good. It means your name is in there only once. What are the odds? One to hundreds?”
“Yeah, I suppose you’re right…”
“C’mon…put these on so we can have breakfast and go,” you ruffled his hair before leaving his room to give him privacy and heading for your own to pick an outfit for yourself.
You closed the door and leaned on it, letting out a shaky breath as you allowed yourself a moment of silence and stillness, closing your eyes. You had to remind yourself that you had to be strong for your family and keep being the support they needed – especially Will, especially right now.
You released a sharp puff of air as you gathered yourself and marched further into the room. As you opened the wardrobe, you ran through every piece of garment you owned, stopping at an ivory dress with a couple of layers. You threw it on, sliding the puff sleeves up your arms and adjusting the fabric. Then you took a corset and tied it nicely at the front. It had beautiful floral embroideries on it that your mother had sewn. You’ve always said she could rival the seamstresses from District Eight if she wanted to.
“Want me to braid your hair? Or you’d rather have it loose?” came your mother’s voice from the entrance and you shook your head.
“Let it be loose. I do want one of those willow tree rose crowns that you always make, though,” she smiled at your request and you returned it.
Joyce nodded her head to signify her retreat and quickly left the house, going to the river where she bent to pick some of the unique flowers and intertwine them into a pretty crown. Nobody knew how exactly these flowers came into existence because they appeared to be a mixture of delphinium and roses, yet a bit different, and came in different sizes and colors – mostly white, purple, blue, and pink shades. They grew more specifically under willow trees and people loved to call them willow tree roses.
Tumblr media
“You look stunning, dearest,” smiled Joyce after she put the flower crown on your head and you sighed heavily, making her smile falter. “I know you’re nervous but this is your last year. Once the Reaping ceremony ends, it’s all over with, once and for all,” she put a hand on your cheek and tried to put as much confidence in her voice as possible, although you could decipher the worry she was trying so hard to hide.
“Jonathan was lucky. He’s safe now. Hopefully, I’ll be just as lucky today. And hopefully Will-” you choked on your last words, eyes flickering to the door, causing Joyce to hush you gently.
“He won’t be chosen,” she spoke firmly. “He won’t.”
“Hey,” Jonathan knocked lightly on the door a moment later before pushing it open. “What are you two doing in here? A secret council meeting?” he joked and the two of you chuckled.
“It’s just girl talk. Don’t be nosy,” you stuck your tongue out and he rolled his eyes.
“C’mon. We have to go.”
“What about breakfast?”
“Because you took so long to prepare, we’ll eat as we walk. Thankfully, I made toast with jam today,” he quipped and you smacked his shoulder lightly, making him snicker and stuck his tongue out.
You tried to hide the way his announcement left a bitter feeling in your mouth and you felt your mom squeeze your hand as she sent you a look and you nodded, exiting your room. Will was already by the entrance, fidgeting nervously and silently munching on his toast.
You took his hand in yours and looked at your mother and older brother who came by your side and the four of you walked out of your home and down the familiar cobblestone path that led to the center of the district.
You tried to enjoy the nature around you as you walked but there was an increasingly heavy feeling gnawing at you and you couldn’t stop the thoughts that swirled in your head, looming like dark clouds ready to rain lightning bolts on water.
“Y/N/N!” you looked up when you heard a familiar voice and a smile immediately grew on your face.
“Steve!” you waved with your free hand and the boy in question ran to you, engulfing you in a hug and lifting you in the air, swinging you left and right, making you giggle as you nuzzled in his shoulder and grasped at the back of his shirt, cheeks heating when you felt his lips graze the skin on your neck.
It was a much-needed distraction.
He let you down then and captured your lips in a kiss which made your brothers groan and look away. You, Steve, and your mother burst out in giggles at their reaction, always enjoying the way they’d embarrassingly look away and scrunch up their faces.
“Oh, come now, Jonathan. Like you and Nancy don’t kiss,” teased Steve and your brother’s cheeks flushed as he stuttered out some sort of defensive answer.
“We’ll be late, you all! C’mon! There’s time for all this later,” berated you Joyce and you sobered up, taking Will and Steve by the hand as you resumed your walking.
Not long after, you arrived at the center of the District and the crowd began getting thicker and thicker, everyone flocking towards a couple of specifically assigned places in front of the Hall of Justice. Will planted his feet on the ground which made you and Steve halt and turn to look at him. The boy gulped as his worried eyes darted everywhere and you leaned, placing a hand on his cheek.
“Hey. It’s time to sign in now. They’ll take a drop of blood but it’s not going to hurt at all. We’ve talked about this. You have nothing to worry about, okay?” you placed a kiss on the crown of his head before your focus was grabbed by a couple of familiar figures approaching you.
“Will!” shouted Mike and your brother turned to look at his best friends jogging towards him, making him smile. At least he wasn’t going to be all alone down in the lines.
“Hey, boys,” you chirped and they smiled as everyone began exchanging greetings and pleasantries, successfully lighting up the mood even if it was by a bit.
The good thing about your party was that even in the darkest of moments, when all of you gathered together, everyone seemed to breathe a bit easier and the heaviness and sorrow would be simply brushed aside.
“Are you scared too?” asked Will and the three boys nodded.
“Dude, if I get Reaped, I swear, I’ll just jump off the platform before the timer’s up and off myself,” groaned Dustin. “Seems like less of a hassle.”
“Oh, shut up. Don’t talk about offing yourself! That’s just disturbing as hell,” Lucas scrunched up his face and nudged his friend’s shoulder.
“God, you kids are just dark,” Steve furrowed his brows in disturbed astonishment, hands on his hips, as he observed the group of four.
“Hey, c’mon you guys. No time for dilly-dallying,” berated you one of the Peacekeepers. “Go to your respectful lines.”
“We’re going, Phil, we’re going.”
You shared a look with the others as you were guided in another direction by Officer Callahan and Steve sent you one last glance as he was escorted to the Hall of Justice.
You stood in line and watched girls your age and younger get their fingers pricked before passing forward. It was mandatory for everyone between the age of twelve and eighteen – possible Tributes – to provide a blood sample as it was the government’s way to identify people and keep tabs on the District population.
You couldn’t tear your eyes off Steve who was climbing the stairs of the podium and taking his place next to the mayor and other Hunger Games Victors and you jumped from fright when a hand landed on your shoulder, making you whirl around sharply and come face to face with no other than Nancy.
“If you could only pay the same amount of attention to your best friend as you do your boyfriend,” she commented with a knowing smirk and you let out a half-hearted snort.
“Sorry, I’m just…distracted.”
“A coin for your thoughts?”
“It’s just…it’s our last year, Nance... What if one of us gets Reaped? I mean…mom says not to worry and all but, the previous games? It was supposed to be Steve’s last year too. He was so happy…so calm…so…positive that everything would be okay…And he got Reaped,” you finally said out loud some of the thoughts that had been plaguing your mind for the past couple of days.
“Does he still have nightmares?“ asked the girl quietly and you nodded.
“Of course, he does. He had to kill a person. It haunts him and it’s not going to stop anytime soon.”
“How many times did you put your name in?” she blurted out suddenly and you stared at her for a moment, silent, before speaking up.
“Twenty.”
“Y/N!” she snapped, eyes widening.
“Please, don’t bust my eardrums,” you lifted a hand in surrender. “This year was a bit harsher than the others. We needed that damn grain and oil, ok?” you sighed as you looked at your feet, scratching your arm, and Nancy’s face melted into one of sympathy.
“Next!” the voice of the government official interrupted your conversation and you turned to face the woman, extending your arm so she could prick your finger. You stamped the empty space on the paper and she scanned the fingerprint with a device. It beeped and shone green and she signaled you to move forward, calling for the next in line.
You stopped to wait for your friend and when she passed, you locked arms and walked arm in arm towards your assigned places – the oldest at the front, the youngest at the back. The parents and those above eighteen were at the side, males and females separated into two groups, all lining up like soldiers.
Everything was well organized and things were moving quickly. Before you knew it, everyone had gathered at the square and the buzzing noise of the murmuring and hustling crowd was replaced by dead silence as you listened to Larry’s annual speech and waited for the typical Capitol escort to join him in selecting this year’s Tributes.
“Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! Happy Hunger Games! And may the odds be ever in your favor!” greeted a woman who wore a ridiculously frilly, extravagant dress with many tiny, sparkling gems that reflected the light and made her have this shiny, dreamlike appearance.
She was dressed in shades of green and pink which you supposed she picked to represent your district. Her hair was tangled in an intricate, heavily braided updo and she had a couple of shimmering emeralds in her locks, matching with her necklace and dangling earrings. She looked stunning and like a fever dream but all you could think of was the amount of money her precious stones could be traded for that could be used to better the life in many districts or how it must have taken hours, if not days, for the people at District Eight to have sewn this outfit, the thought of their hands and fingers filled with calluses and scratches and reddened skin making your gut clench.
“Now, before we begin, we have a very special film. Brought to you all the way from the Capitol,” she exclaimed with a smile and you and Nancy shared a look of annoyance as the same video you’ve been shown every year began playing again, speaking of the rebellion, the founding of the games and of course, the glory of the Capitol and President Martin Brenner.
“War. Terrible war,” mouthed Nancy and you suppressed a smile from growing.
“War. Terrible war. Widows, orphans, a motherless child. This was the uprising that rocked our land. Thirteen districts rebelled against the country that fed them-“
You chose to tune it out and focus on your boyfriend instead, feeling a pang inside at the sight of him fidgeting in his spot, standing next to the mayor and the other higher-ups. You couldn’t imagine the amount of unpleasant memories and PTSD that were hitting him at this very moment.
And the thought of him having to relive all this, every year for the rest of his life because he was a mentor now and would have to lead other tributes into becoming pieces of meat that would certainly die in the arena, made the disgust you felt for the Capitol grow. He had already lost a bit of his glimmer since the last games. You didn’t want a chunk of him to be taken away bit by bit with every following year until he inevitably becomes an empty shell or an addict as Hopper did.
Another pang hit you at the thought of the older man and your hands clenched in fists.
When was this madness going to end?
“This is how we remember our past. This is how we safeguard our future.”
“Marvelous!” exclaimed the woman as she clapped, wide grin faltering just a tad bit when nobody else clapped alongside her. She cleared her throat awkwardly but did not let the smile fade away. “Now, the time has come for us to select one courageous young man and woman for the honor of representing District Seven in the Seventy-Fourth Annual Hunger Games.”
You turned halfway, scooping the crowd of guys over your shoulder, trying to locate Will. You found him at the side of the line, way back alongside Mike, Dustin, and Lucas. Your heart clenched when you saw that the four of them grasped each others’ hands. You couldn’t imagine how scared they must be right now. Or rather, you could, because you’ve been in their shoes before and frankly, you were afraid right now, and you would keep being afraid until Will officially turned nineteen.
“As usual, ladies first,” the woman’s voice interrupted your train of thought and you turned to look at her, taking Nancy’s hand in your own.
You remembered how the two of you had stood in the same square last year, although you had Barbara by your side…until she was reaped alongside Steve. It had been a huge blow to your party and especially to you and Nancy.
You gulped nervously as you trailed the woman’s form and saw her slowly approach the huge glass bowl full of folded paper and stuck her arm inside, pulling one out of the whole sea before returning to the microphone. She unfolded it and her eyes skimmed over the letters before she finally announced it out loud.
“Nancy Wheeler!”
Your body tensed and you could feel Nancy’s hand squeeze yours painfully tight as her eyes widened. Everyone turned to look at her and you could feel Jonathan’s burning gaze join them.
You squeezed her hand back encouragingly and she took a shaky breath before releasing you from her deathly grip, taking a few hesitant steps through the line of people until she reached the path where two Peacekeepers were waiting for her. They stood expectantly as she began walking down the pathway and they escorted her to the podium.
“Come on up!” grinned the woman as she beckoned her over with her hand and Nancy gulped, climbing the stairs and joining her in front of everyone.
She could see Mike looking paler than usual as he stared at her with pure horror. She could see her parents to the side, looking mortified. Her father was more calm and collected but she could see it all in his eyes while her mother let it show on her face. She felt tears pricking at her eyes but she knew she had to keep herself together and not show any sign of weakness so she swallowed them and straightened up.
“And now for the boys.”
This whole ceremony was becoming too long and tedious and you felt as if they were doing it on purpose to keep people on edge for as long as possible. You played with your fingers, picking at the skin, for you could not sit still, and you tried battling away the horrible feeling that had engulfed you.
The moment the name slipped past her lips, all color drained from your face.
“William Byers!”
Your heart plummeted at the announcement and you felt like someone punched the air out of you. You could hear your mother’s sharp intake of air resonate in the deadly silence that had befallen the crowd ever since the mayor began his speech and you sharply turned around to look at where your brother was standing, frozen in his spot. Two Peacekeepers approached him and grabbed him by the arm when he refused to move on his own.
“Don’t touch him!”
“Let him go!”
Mike, Dustin, and Lucas shouted when the men began pulling Will away and others had to go and restrain them. They kicked and wriggled in their grasp as Will was escorted further down the road and your breathing was increasing dramatically alongside your heartbeat. You felt like you were on the verge of collapse.
Your worst fear came to fruition. It became a reality you had prayed so hard to prevent from happening.
How many people were you going to lose to these games?
First Barbara. Then Steve almost died. Now Nancy and your brother were being sent to their death.
It’s like the world was coming for you all.
You looked on helplessly as your brother passed by you, the two of you sharing panicked looks briefly until he approached the podium and was helped up by the woman because he could barely stand on his feet due to the shock and fear.
But you didn’t have to be helpless.
You could do more than just watch. And who knows, maybe you’d even be able to save two lives this time around.
So you didn’t hesitate to lift your arm in the air. It went above the sea of heads, sticking like a sore thumb and drawing everyone’s attention.
“I volunteer as Tribute,” you spoke out but it was so quiet and breathy that even you could barely hear yourself.
“Sorry, what was that, dear?” asked the woman and you gulped the lump that was stuck in your throat before lowering your arm and walking out of the crowd, stepping onto the pathway so everyone could see and hear you better. Phil and Calvin looked at each other, wondering if they should obscure your way and take you back and they took a step forward but that’s when you interrupted them, screaming out what you had said just a couple of seconds ago, now more confidently.
“I volunteer as Tribute!”
Joyce’s hand flew to her mouth as a new wave of tears rolled down her cheeks and she leaned on Jonathan as her shoulders shook with silent sobs and the boy wrapped his arms around her, looking on with utter defeat.
Steve was no different. He felt his entire body shudder and he was this close to bolting towards you, grabbing you, and shutting your mouth, but he remained rooted on his spot, body numb and not obeying what his mind wanted to do. He could only clench his fists and try to remain calm as he watched you walk to the podium.
“Can we just clarify this, hun? You wish to replace Mrs. Wheeler, is that it?” asked the woman.
“Yes,” you replied as you began climbing the stairs and the woman let out a pleasantly surprised ‘Whoa’.
“Well, that’s certainly an interesting turn of events! Mrs. Wheeler, you’re… free to go,” she instructed the girl and Nancy slowly walked away, the two of you passing each other on the stairs. She sent you an incredulous look and your lips twitched, trying to give her a little smile as your hands brushed. “What is your name, dear?” asked the woman after she took you by the arm and guided you to the mic.
“Y/N Byers.”
“Oh me, oh my, that is unexpected! Oh, I bet you’re the older sister of this sweet boy over there,” she proclaimed and you turned to look at Will who was the definition of a deer caught in headlights.
“I am.”
“Well, Y/N, what you did was very noble. Ladies and gentlemen, a round of applause for District Seven’s tributes, Y/N Byers and William Byers!” declared the woman brightly as she clapped but once again nobody returned the gesture.
Everyone touched their lips with their fingers and lifted their arms in the air in the three-finger salute – a salute that represented people showing solidarity to one another.
“It is an old and rarely used gesture of our district, occasionally seen at funerals. It means thanks, it means admiration, it means goodbye to someone you love.”
You couldn’t believe that your mother’s words, these exact words, reached you right at this moment as you stared at the sea of people saluting you and sending you off.
And while you loved the gesture and appreciated that everyone showed their admiration towards you, you also couldn’t help but think that they were too quick to bury you. You didn’t blame them, for you never appeared to be a tough and powerful girl. But there was fight in you. It was temporarily smothered by the shock of the Reaping but it was now coming back full force, the salute reminding you who you truly were and igniting every cell in your body. And right then and there you swore that you would protect your brother no matter the cost.
“Thank you, everyone. Happy Hunger Games and may the odds be ever in your favor!”

Steve Harrington Is a Good Babysitter
This list will include all ratings and tags, so read at your own discretion! :)
Blood will follow blood by Rocketbride - Rated T
Steve smiled. “Here’s the bad news: you’re gonna need stitches, Mayfield. A bandage isn’t going to keep enough blood inside of you. And you might get an infection if you leave it gaping open like that.”
“No. No!” Max thrashed and El hugged her.
“What’s the problem, Mad Max?” Eddie said from behind Lucas. “Hate the hospital? It ain’t so bad. I had some delicious jello when I was recovering from the bat attack.” He sauntered into her line of sight and flapped his arms dramatically.
“No, it’s…we can’t afford it, alright?” Max tried to sit up and El scooched in to support her. “I had to get stitches two months ago and they cost $200. My mom didn’t eat lunch for a week after that.” Her eyes rolled up at Steve. “Please, Steve, can’t you just, like, tape it up? I can go easy on it. Lucas can help me get around.” Everyone looked at Lucas, who nodded nervously.
“Steve, just put some more gauze on it, I’ll be fine,” Max gritted out as she tried to get to her feet.
“Woah, woah, stay down,” Steve held his arms to block her. He chewed his lips harder. “I guess I could. Yeah. It could work.”
The dangers of babysitting by Siegrrun - Rated T
The wound in his side screamed against the too deep breath and it took everything he had in him not to make a sound. There was no need to alarm the kids.
Or
Steve hides his injury from the kids. It goes about as well as you'd think
i wave goodbye to the end of beginning (goodbye) by steveharringtoned - Not Rated
Eddie Munson has been going steady with Steve Harrington for a little while now. He’s learned to expect the occasional disturbance.
In which he observes:
5 times Steve helps the kids, +1 time they help him.
you're beautiful (every little piece, love) by strawberryspence - Rated T
Steve Harrington would do anything for the kids. Anything.
Apparently that includes shaving his hair.
The Curse of Hawkins Becomes Known by AshWinterGray - Rated T
Lucas won the game, Steve pulls off a miracle, the guys are sorry, and... Chrissy Cunningham is apparently possessed. This is not how anyone thought the night would go. Least of all the government.
You can put it all on me, you can laugh and you can bleed by steveharringtoned - Rated G
Phil Callahan has made a large variety of strange arrests in his time working as a cop for Hawkins, Indiana. Daylight skinny-dippers; a small group of old ladies who’d attempted to rob the corner shop with their umbrellas, a guy who’d stolen a total of eighteen gnomes from his suburban neighborhood.
But pulling over Max Mayfield driving her brother’s Camaro at the ripe age of thirteen was pretty insane. Sure, kids will be kids and kids will be crazy. Until Steve Harrington crawled out of the backseat, clutched his knees and horror-movie hurled blood all over his boots and shit got crazier.
That took it from a minor concern to oh, fuck. Callahan has to take this kid to a hospital.
Kiss, Marry, Kill by QueermoDelToro - Rated G
The kids play Kiss, Marry, Kill. Dustin instigates. Mike overreacts. Hilarity ensues.
Pride of the Party by scifigeek14 - Rated T
The party owes Steve a lot, and he owes them just as much.
A five plus one fic - about friendship, growing up, and gratitude.
it feels so scary, getting old by generic_cruiser - Rated T
Five times Robin sees Steve being a mom to the party, and one time she fills in for him
five times steve hated being the babysitter and the one time he was grateful by simplyylupin - Rated T
Selfishly, a part of him wished he’d ignored Dustin earlier that day and just gone home, oblivious to the situation around him. Alas, he was there, and there was no way in hell he was letting these prepubescent dipshits blindly follow a bunch of flesh eating monsters.
or
Five times Steve Harrington (thought he) hated being the babysitter and the one time he was grateful.
Sleep tight, don't let the Demodogs bite by PursueCrazyLife - Rated G
After the tunnels a fairly stressed-out and concussed Steve has to ensure the safety of the kids.
And there is still the matter of the demodog in the fridge.
(aka. the obligatory season 2 aftermath fanfic. After experiencing season 2 nostalgia I couldn't help myself adding yet another one to the pile)
The Favor by AshWinterGray - Rated T
Hopper showing up at his door is alarming for several reasons. For most, it would be because he was the Chief of Police. But for Steve, it meant there was a potential threat. And now was not the time for him to be cooking dinner.
Common Cents by Ghoststar - Rated T
Making a will at eighteen seems incredibly morbid. The lawyer stares at him long and hard the entire time. She acts like he's contagious, like she might catch her death from him or maybe he'll ruin her rug by dropping dead in her office. Steve figures she has nothing to worry about. If anything's going to kill him, it's probably going to be a monster from the Upside Down.
-
In which Steve hunts monsters, becomes a deputy, makes a will, and finds a family. Among other things.
designated driver by genesisofrhythm - Rated T
Steve screamed as Robin slammed on the brakes.
“That is not how you stop!” he said, as his whole body jerked forward. His head would’ve hit the dashboard if he wasn’t holding the handle at the top of the car with a death grip.
Robin turned to look at him. She had the audacity to be offended. “There was a stop sign.”
“Eyes on the road,” Steve snapped.
Or: 5 times Steve taught someone how to drive + 1 time he was in the driver’s seat.
Outside Looking In (Request) by miss_little_kitten - Rated G
Eddie seeing the kids and Robin interacting with Steve, including a day he's waiting for their arrival and they never came.
Steve and Robin would 100% look everywhere for those kids if they couldn't find them.
The Times Steve Didn't Know How To Say I Love You and the Time He Did by miss_little_kitten - Rated G
Times Steve didn't know to say I love you too back to the kids, either in their own love language or the words in general and then the time he said he loved them to Hell and back, which was obvious.

Flipping the Vinyl Pt 2 (Eddie x Henderson!Reader
Tumblr media
Blue and red lights flashed reflected on the side of Steve's car as he walked over with a water bottle. "Here." Steve said softly as you sniffled, Eddie's jacket wrapped around you. The March air was cool and crying certainly didn't help with the dripping from your nose.
You sniffled, Eddie's arm remaining around you. He tried to pull away once but those eyes wouldn't let him leave. Not when he knew you needed him. Dustin sat on your other side, watching the scene. "Excuse me, you can't be here this is a crime-" "She's family." Chrissy's father Phillip said. You stood up, hugging him.
"Come on inside, we have a few questions we'd like to ask." Powell said. You turned to the group. "We'll be here." Dustin assured. You walked inside, sitting on the couch. Callahan sat across from you with a notepad. "So, she's not actually family, right-" "come on Callahan, you've known all of us since we could crawl." You said, Powell handing you a tissue. You said a small thank you, Callahan sighing. "I'll ask the questions from here, Phil." Powell said.
The two switched spots and Phillip handed you a glass of water. "Were you aware of anything at all that could've led up to... This?" Powell asked. You swallowed a forming lump in your throat. "She... She said she was seeing things. Before she..." Your voice broke and you put your face in your hands.
"Seeing things? Like what?" Powell asked. "I don't know, she seemed frantic every time it was brought up." You sniffled. "She didn't mention anything specific?" Callahan asked. "She-she mentioned a clock. And- and she could hear someone." You said. Powell rose a brow. "Did she tell either of you?" Powell asked her parents.
"No, Chrissy didn't share much of her personal life with us" Phillip admitted. "This shouldn't have happened- why did this happen!?" Laura, Chrissy's mother sobbed. You closed your eyes, sniffling. "I know this is hard. For all of you. But are you sure there isn't anything she might've said or did? Anything that might-" "The lights." Robert, Chrissy's brother who was around Dustin's age said.
You turned to the boy as he stood at the base of the stairs. His eyes were puffy and had dark bags under them. "What?" You asked. "Last night, the lights went berserk. I-I heard a thud. I didn't think much of it until... I found her... like that." He said. "Like what?" You asked. Everyone seemed deeply unsettled by that question.
"That's all we need for now-" "How was she found?" You asked. Powell looked at Phillip and he spoke. "She-she didn't have her eyes. And her bones... All of them they were..." Phillip put a hand over his mouth and let out a small sob.
This didn't sound like any human did this. And judging by the comment made by Robert, it meant something from the Upside-Down did this. You didn't say anything, staring off when Powell noticed. "Y/n? Something to add here?" He asked. You had to come up with something.
"I... Remember one of the Byers saying that when Will went missing... Electricity went berserk." You said. Powell rose a brow. "You think that the government did this?" He asked. "No, I think they might know what did." you corrected. Powell and Callahan exchanged another look. "That's all we needed. We're sorry for your loss Mr. and Mrs. Cunningham." Powell said.
Robin walked down the street, noticing the various cop cars out. She thought something odd was going on for sure, but became concerned when she found Eddie, Steve and Dustin sitting on the edge of the sidewalk.
Eddie's eyes were glued to the front door of the house that the police were all in front of. "What the fuck is going on here?" Robin asked. Steve looked over. "What are you doing here?" He asked. "Went for a walk. What's your excuse?" She asked. "Chrissy Cunningham died." Steve answered. "Why's Munson with you?" Robin motioned to the boy watching the door.
"He was with Y/n last night." Dustin sighed, rolling a small pebble with his fingers. "You... Were?" She asked Eddie. "Yeah..." Eddie muttered. "...Are you two a thing now?" Robin asked. "What? No I just-" You stepped out of the house and Eddie rose to his feet.
To say you looked like hell would be the understatement of the century. Your eyes were puffy and now you looked sickly as you sniffled. Eddie just wanted to hold you and tell you that he'd be there for you through all of this. However, seeing as the two of you just got to know each other yesterday, he figured it'd be a bit of an awkward gesture rather than a kind one.
However, you wanted that. You wanted nothing more than to just curl back up with Eddie and block out the world. Whether high or sober, Eddie provided a sense of safety you hadn't felt in a long time. Because you just met the boy yesterday though, those thoughts remained silent.
"You okay, Y/n?" Robin asked. "I think... I think another gate is open." You finally spoke. "What?" Robin, Dustin and Steve all asked in unison. Eddie seemed confused on what this meant. "That's not possible, the Russians are gone and so is El." Dustin reminded. "Then someone found another way Dustin, I am telling you this wasn't normal." You said. "Slow down. What's making you think this?" Steve asked. "Christopher said last night he saw the lights go berserk before hearing a thud. Then this morning he found... Chrissy... with her bones broken and her eyes gouged out." You said. Everyone gaped at your description.
"What the fuck would even do that!?" Dustin asked. "I don't know, I was with Nancy and Jonathan when we first saw the Demogorgon, that thing basically tore into whatever it could get its hands on. I don't think it'd even have the motor functions to do that." You said. "Wait- Demogoron?" Eddie's question went unnoticed as the group spoke.
"A demodog does the same thing, the only thing that would have close to that ability was the Mindflayer. And that's for sure, dead." Dustin said. "Mindflayer? What the fuck-" Eddie again went unnoticed. "So it's something new? Wait, how did another gate even open? Who would have the ability to do something like that?" Robin asked. "I don't know but we have to figure it out." You said. "Woah there stop stop stop." Steve halted.
"What Steve?" You asked. "What makes you sure this is the Upside-Down?" Steve asked. "Because what else would do that? Steve it's Chrissy, the girl is a walking..." You closed your eyes, clearly pained. "Was a walking saint." You said. Steve opened his mouth but looked at you again before sighing. "So what's the plan?" Steve asked.
"Figure out what the fuck all of you are talking about." Eddie finally said, making you all realize he was the one person who didn't know. "...Fuck" Steve said. "Should we tell him?" Robin asked. "Yes." You said immediately. "Wha- Woah there Sailor-" "Look we just said all of that in front of him, the most we're doing is giving him context." Dustin said. "You'd be putting him in danger!" Steve said. "Just tell me already. Why are you guys talking about D&D characters?" Eddie asked.
"Well-" "Not here." You said abruptly. You nodded to the cops and Steve sighed. "Where are we going?" Steve asked. "some place that isn't bugged." Dustin said. "Not bugged? What-" "I might can think of a place." Steve realized.
You all crammed into Eddie's van, sitting in the back with Eddie as Steve drove. "You okay?" Eddie asked. "No." You muttered. "....Y'know I'm here for you... right?" He asked. "Thanks." You said, Eddie giving you a small smile. You smiled slightly, picking at a bracelet you wore. "What's that?" Eddie asked. "Something Chris gave me. She wears..." you cleared your throat. "She wore one too." You corrected yourself quietly. Eddie bit his lip debating on what to do when Steve parked.
"....Where are we?" You asked. "The woods." Steve said, getting out. You all followed him to a giant rock, him sitting on the ground. "Alright. Talk." Steve said. "...Steve. Where the fuck are we?" Robin asked. "Skull rock." Steve said. "So we tell you we need some place private and you drag us to your makeout spot?" You asked. "Oh god, that's what this is?" Robin grimaced. "Do you have any other ideas!? No!? Then shut up!" Steve said. You sighed.
"What is going on?" Eddie asked. "...Okay so do you ever think there's too much weird shit going on in Hawkins that goes unnoticed?" Robin asked. "...Yeah I guess. Why?" Eddie asked. "We have a lot of answers. Things we witnessed and we need you to promise us that what we say to you doesn't leave this group." Dustin said. "I promise." Eddie nodded.
"It all started when Will Byers went missing. Some sort of door to a parallel universe opened and we saw everything. The Upside-Down. It's like Hawkins but everything's dark, abandoned and the air itself is poison after long periods of time." Steve explained.
You guys must've taken at least an hour to explain everything to him. By the end, Eddie stared at the group as if they were other worldly. "So Holland wasn't a freak accident." Eddie said. "Right." Steve nodded. "Will was possessed by an interdimensional creature" "yes." "And you all have a mutual friend who can move things with her mind and open gates to this other universe called the Upside-Down?" Eddie asked. "Yes." Robin nodded. "And the mall fire wasn't an actual mall fire but was actually a combination of the Mindflayer and Russians who were trying to open the gate?" Eddie finished. "Yes." You nodded.
"....You guys realize you sound insane, right?" Eddie asked. Everyone groaned. "What can we do to make you believe this is real?" Dustin asked. "I don't know, battle scars or something. You guys are telling me you fought interdimensional monsters and walked away unscathed? No, you have to have some sort of scar or-" you shoved off his jacket and took off your t-shirt. "WOAH!" Steve and Dustin jumped back, Eddie's jaw dropping as you turned your back to him.
You had a large scratch mark on your back. No dog could do that. Nothing human could do what he was seeing. "I saved Jonathan Byers' life when he almost got killed by a Demogorgon." You said before putting your shirt back on.
Eddie swallowed, staring at you. "Was that enough proof or do we all have to strip?" You asked. "...That was... enough proof." Eddie said slowly. He just saw you partially naked. His brain was fried and Robin had had her fair share of this reaction to know what this was.
Eddie liked you. You sighed. "Look, it sounds crazy. It is. But it's real and it's dangerous and now something else may be out there." You said. "What came from the Upside-Down then?" Eddie asked. "That's the problem. We don't know." Steve admitted. "How did the gate open again if it was closed? I thought your friend was the only one that could do that." Eddie asked. "Yet another thing we don't know." Robin added. "Which means there's got to be someone else like Eleven." You realized. "...Wait you don't seriously think-" "I do. I mean, El is in California, there's no fucking way she did this. Which means someone else can do this." You said.
Everyone tensed up. "This is bad." Dustin said. "We should contact El, we need to know if this is even possible." Robin suggested. "We need to let Lucas and Max know what's going on" Dustin added. "We need a place to recoup." Eddie said. "Agreed." Steve said. "What about our house?" You suggested. "Yes! Good idea. Our house." Dustin agreed. "But what about your mom?" Robin asked. "Believe me, she will not give two shits." You said, starting to walk back to the van. "Why's that?" Eddie asked. "Because she's not there, she's at our aunt's condo in Colorado. She's getting us another cat." You said. "Whatcha naming this one?" Eddie asked. "Aragorn if it's a boy, Éowyn if it'sa girl." You answered making Eddie grin.
You all walked into your house, you taking off your backpack and setting it by the door. "Make yourselves at home, I'm taking a shower while Dustin contacts Max and Lucas." You sighed, walking into your room. You grabbed clothes, walking into the bathroom and locking the door. You finally could see yourself in the mirror.
You let that exhaustion hit you, realizing you had spent just about 18 years of your life with your bestfriend. And now you had to navigate the world without her.
Eddie walked around, hearing the shower start. He noticed a room with a cracked door, him lightly pushing it open to be met with a room that was obviously yours.
You had a closet and next to it was a stand up mirrror. You had pictures of you and the cheer squad all over the place. All of them looked posed except for the ones of you and Chrissy. But Eddie's favorite picture by far was the one of you playing guitar. You didn't seem to be aware the picture was being taken, seeing as you weren't looking at the camera. Your hair was pulled back and you were sitting across from an older man who was also playing guitar.
"Can I help you?" You asked making Eddie jump. "Got distracted waiting on Dustin, sorry" he apologized. "It's okay, I don't mind." You shrugged, sitting on your bed. Eddie looked around. "This room is cool." He said. "Thanks. Feels like it took forever to make it my own." You admitted. "I like it. It just... fits you." He said making you smile slightly. "Who is the guy in that picture by the way?" Eddie asked. "My grandpa. He's the one that got me the guitar." You shrugged.
"Cool." Eddie nodded, noticing the shelf of vinyl. "You have vinyl?" Eddie asked. "Yeah, of course." You said. He walked over, flipping through the records. "Def Leppard, Black Sabbath- my god you just get better and better." He said making you smile again. "You're not so bad yourself Munson." You said, looking up at him with your legs crossed on your bed. Eddie smiled back at you, taking note of your newly exhausted look.
"Hey... Are you okay? I mean, you've been through a lot today." Eddie asked, sitting next to you. "I want to say I'm okay. Truth is I'm terrified. Chrissy was the only normal thing I had when we first discovered the Upside-Down. Now... I have nothing. I'm alone and that thought it terrifying" you explained. "You're not alone Y/n." Eddie said. "I mean, I have Dustin, Robin and Steve but-" "You have me." He said softly. You stared at him for a moment. "...I have you." You said softly. "You'll always have me." He assured.
You wanted to believe that. But you let your doubts slip from your mouth. "You don't know that." You whispered. "I do." He assured. "What if something happens to you like it did Chrissy what if I lose-" he cradled your face looking into your eyes. "You won't lose me Y/n."
Your room was so quiet you could hear a pin drop. Eddie didn't move and neither did you. Eddie parted his lips, staring into your eyes. You swallowed hard, staring at him as his hands slowly slipped down to yours. "Eddie will... will you just lay with me?" You asked. Eddie nodded, leaning back with you.
"The best we can do is meeting up with everyone tomorrow, I can't get ahold of them." Dustin sighed. Robin sighed, getting up and walking to the bathroom when she noticed your cracked door.
She nearly ignored it but noticed Eddie's jacket on the floor and peaked in, seeing Eddie sound asleep with your head on his chest. "What are you looking a-" "shh." Robin hushed. She nodded to you and Eddie and Steve blinked. He quietly closed the door and Dustin looked over. "What's with the two of you?" Dustin asked.
"How close would you say Y/n and Eddie are?" Steve asked. "They just met each other yesterday, why?" Dustin asked. "Because they're sleeping on each other as we speak." Steve said. Dustin blinked. "What?" He asked. "Eddie and Y/n are asleep in her room, together. On each other, like cuddling." Steve clarified. "Holy crap." Dustin gaped. "I think it's cute." Robin said. "She- woah." Dustin seemed to think this was odd behavior. "What's with you?" Steve asked. "Y/n's never had a crush before." Dustin admitted.
"Pft. She's a teenage girl, she totally has-" "No, she literally said the aspect of romance bored her to death, she never took to dating. At all." Dustin said. "Ever think that had to do with who she was hanging around?" Robin said. "Who? Chrissy?" Steve asked. "No, the athletes in general. We know better than to think she'd actually want to date any of them. They're all she knows in that school." Robin said. "Well, until now." Steve said. "I think this is good" Dustin said. "You do?" Steve asked.
"Yeah, it means someone is going to be able to support her through... Y'know. Losing Chrissy." Dustin said. Everyone seemed to nearly forget that major change in the day. Everything was supposed to be normal and then... Chrissy was just gone.
"Looks like we're sleeping here." Steve said. "Dibs on the couch." Robin said making Steve groan.
It was nearly midnight when you felt a sharp pain in your eye that began to throb. You had been through this enough to know it was the start of a migraine. You got up, careful as to not wake Eddie as you stepped into the bathroom. You opened the cabinet, hearing a soft tap against the sink. You closed the cabinet, the mirror on its door showing you that your nose was bleeding. It had been a common occurrence since the season had been bouncing frantically between hot and cold.
You cleaned yourself up, patting away the blood. "You killed her." A voice said. You turned around quickly to see Dustin in the doorway. "If you just stayed with her instead of hanging around Eddie she'd still be here" Dustin said. You opened your mouth before hearing something.
You heard a clock.
With its loud chime, Dustin was gone and you were standing by yourself in the bathroom. You swallowed hard, walking back to your room. You laid back down, Eddie instinctively pulling you back to him. You held onto him, feeling slightly reassured by that piece of reality.
Your eyes got heavy once again before you heard a noise as you closed your eyes.
You could swear that just for a moment...
You heard ticking.

Summary
Lucas says all this as if it’s the most obvious thing in the world, and in retrospect it kind of is. He knows how badly Lucas wants Mayfield from next door to come watch him play – in his mind Eddie and Chrissy must be the same way. Maybe if they were actually dating it would have occurred to him on his own, or maybe the pair’s six years of friendship should have given him the same idea. Instead, it’s starting to seem like this evening will be going on the small list of times his ‘relationship’ with Chrissy Cunningham has come back to bite him. OR The events of Season 4 (plus a little before and after) if Eddie and Chrissy were the OG Steve and Robin and pretended to date throughout high school to keep each other from being outed.

TRICKS OF LIFE — STEVE HARRINGTON
Tumblr media
𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐩𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐢. — 𝐁𝐚𝐛𝐲𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫
Overview: Will Byers, a close friend of Y/N herself, although in high school, was missing, setting a sense of concern for him, wondering what could’ve happened as being interviewed by the police themselves. We continue to dive deeper into the girl’s life to the connections of some familiar boys.
Navigation — Mixtape
Doodles, words, and weird figures were being scribbled in the sturdy notebook, with the thin pencil marking the surface of the lined paper. Class was even more boring now that Y/N couldn’t bother to pay attention to her U.S. History class, vividly in her daydreams of where one of her close friends, Jonathan Byers could be since he never showed up that morning, the teacher decided to speak up, snapping her out of her thoughts.
”Miss Hopper, would you like to elaborate with what Tammy said?” He cleared his throat, standing next to the girl’s desk all eyes on her. Y/N frantically narrowed her vision to the board, feeling a sense of unease when everyone watched her intently. Her E/C colored eyes shifted from right to left, feeling a ridiculous amount of pressure starting to well on her chest. Breathing in and out, she squinted at the chalkboard, focusing on the big letter written on the board, The Holocaust. An eerie silence grew into place, maybe a silent cough held in the background. Y/N’s palms became clammy, scrambling through her unopened textbook and unwritten notebook. Stumbling through her words in the awkwardness, the door of the classroom swung open to find the principal of the school, in a fine suit.
The class’ eyes shifted from Y/N’s mess to the lady, standing by the doorway, “Can I have Y/N Hopper?” Now her heart dropped to her stomach, was she into deep shit now? Maybe someone had caught her smoking this time. Was this going to be another accusation someone had made? If her dad heard about this, she was definitely going to be toast.
The eyes were now back on Y/N, worrisome, she rapidly crumpled her sheets of paper along with the textbook into her plain backpack. She slung it onto her shoulder, keeping her head low and meeting contact with the principal who guided her out of the classroom as she closed the door behind them before walking by the empty hallway.
“Am I in trouble?” The girl nervously bit her lip, looking down at the squeaky floor, the principal moved her glance to see Y/N looking so timid.
The principal shook her head, putting a reassuring hand onto the girl’s shoulder, “No, you’re not. Hopper, one of the most intellectual students we’ve had here in Hawkins High. In fact we need your help.”
Without asking any questions, Y/N’s eyes widened, a smile forming on her lips. The walk to the principal’s office was a bit uncomfortable, as none of them spoke along the trail. Finally getting to the office’s door, they opened it to find her dad along with his handy dandy partner, Phil Callahan, whom Y/N had been very close with since the beginning of her life when Hopper first got his job as chief of police. Giving a little wave for politeness,  the principal directed the girl to sit down in the chair in front of her.
”I really regret to inform you but, Will Byers went missing the other night,” The principal’s eyes saddened, turning them up to the two police officers, “And from what your father had said, you saw him that night.”
Oh god.
Will Byers was missing. No, not will. Not will. Why Will? Will was just a friendly kid who loved to play D&D with his friends Mike Wheeler, Lucas Sinclair, and Dustin Henderson under their basement for neverlasting hours. The wizard, the position he played, the shy, bubbly and nerdy kid who trusted her no matter what. Will, Will Byers was missing.
“Steve’s a twat!” A middle schooler climbed down the stairs in the Wheeler’s residence, to find four slightly younger boys sitting on a couch, having a board in front of them. Curious, she kneeled beside Nancy Wheeler’s younger brother, Michael, “What are you guys doing? Some magic trick or what?”
Mike looked beside him, to find one of Nancy’s friends observing the board with the tiny figurines placed on top. Without precaution, the curly haired boy that was sat in front of him spoke up, “It’s Dungeons and Dragons!”
“Wow, that’s cool, I don’t know what that is,” She brought her knees to her chest with her arms wrapped around them. The boys’ eyes fell onto the girl. What was she doing here? Shouldn’t she be with Nancy?
“My sister is upstairs by the way,” Mike cringed a bit, to find the girl being ever so intrigued by what the boys were up to on a Wednesday night.
Y/N turned over to the younger brother, then to the other three boys, sitting in silence, “I know, but I’m sick of her talking about her boyfriend Steve. I wanted to see what you were doing.” Quietness began while glances were exchanged, the girl leaned closer and directed the boys to do so as well, she hushed, “Don’t tell Nancy, but sometimes she’s boring.”
Lucas and Will both looked at each fondly, as the rest nodded their heads in agreement when Mike spoke up, “Finally! Someone notices for once!”
Dustin shakes his head in disagreement, the boy gave an obnoxious smile, “No, Nancy’s awesome!”
The group of laughter, turned to Dustin who was smiling like a freak. Lucas snapped jokingly, “DUSTIN LIKES NANCY OOOOOO!”
“What? No I don’t!” Dustin’s face turned beat red while Lucas chased Dustin around, imitating a few kisses with the weird noises. Mike got up to stop the two from hitting each other and creating a racket in the living room, the three seemed to have began a rumble, while the quiet one cheered them on with laughter arousing him.
Y/N nudges the quiet boy, smiling towards his direction, “They’re a lot to handle huh?” The boy nods a little bit, after hearing the “Dustin I love you” and “Kiss me Dustin!” mimicks from Lucas, giving smoochy faces. “Aren’t you Jonathan’s younger brother?”
The brunette boy with the bowl cut nods again, trying to shout in between the shouting induced by the three boys fighting in from of them, “I’m Will!”
”Oh! That’s good! Your brother is in Mr. Clark’s class with me!” Y/N laughed, seeing Lucas and Mike stack on top of tiny Dustin squirming below them. Will and Y/N signaled to join the stack, feeling Dustin start to giggle hysterically while Y/N began to tickle his stomach. All of them burst into laughter in the stack until Nancy came downstairs to ruin the fun.
”MIKE WHAT THE HECK?!” Nancy shouted, pulling giggly Y/N out of the bunch of first graders tumbled on the rug, “Leave my friends alone for the hundredth time!”
After seeing her being pulled away, Y/N wiggled out of Nancy’s grip, stepping away from her and seeing the boys suddenly become so serious, “Nancy, I was already hanging out with them. They’re cool.”
”What?” She felt frazzled at the remark, then heard Mrs. and Mr. Wheeler coming in after a night out. Both looked satisfied in finally having a night out together due to taking care of their children and working.
“We didn’t know Y/N came over! We hate to have the boys alone here sometimes,” Karen Wheeler sat on the couch as the boys broke apart and sat in their own space in the living room, Y/N standing along with Nancy.
”Maybe you should get them a babysitter!” The H/C colored girl suggested, putting her hands on her waist, “They’re lots of fun to be with!”
”Be our babysitter!” Dustin stumbled to get up, jumping up and down, exclaiming. The others chimed in as well.
Lucas nods along, ”Yeah that would be great!”
”You would be the best babysitter in Hawkins!” Will chants, earning Mike’s agreement too.
Mrs. Wheeler laughed at the excited boys surrounded tween Y/N who seemed heartfelt to have people that want to be around her, “It seems like a great idea, I’ll talk to their moms and see what they think. I’ll let your dad know tomorrow.”
Squeals from the seven-year olds filled the living room, when Karen had considered the request, it had already been late and their moms would be at the Wheeler’s to pick the boys up back home. While Lucas slipped on his sweater, he shouted, “At least my babysitter doesn’t have to be the old hag Mrs. Wilson!”
“TRUE!” Dustin laughs along with him, while Will follows behind to find Mrs. Sinclair waving from the sidewalk standing beside her car with three year old Erica Sinclair, wanting to throw a tantrum to be let go from her mother’s grip. As Lucas, Dustin, and Will left they all chanted in unison, “Y/N! Y/N! Y/N!” To plaster a cheeky smile on the girl’s face.
Never in her entire life has this girl felt so.... accepted, liked, included for once. Something the bratty kids of Hawkins Middle School had felt towards the girl. This felt like something new, something new with a long trail of friendship. Totes to the new babysitter of these boys, whom they enjoyed being around with, no matter what

From Alibi to Reality
A little something different, I hope you guys like it! Title brought to you by @nburkhardt. Please leave your thoughts in the comments!
~*~*~*~
Steve knew he was going to act as Eddie’s beard for the cops and the town. That was a no-brainer, it was the only way to clear Eddie’s name. He discussed it with Hopper, the kids, and Robin. Everyone determined that the shock factor of Steve “The Hair” Harrington dating the town freak was the only thing that was going to change Powell’s mind and make him drop the charges. The thing no one could agree on was how to broach the subject.
Dustin thought that telling the police directly would be the best way, Robin thought they should build up to the declaration, and Nancy thought it was a stupid idea because no one would believe that lady-killer Steve Harrington was into a guy (little did she know). Regardless, all of his friends thought talking was the best course to take.
But Steve was a man of action, not words. All of the Party’s plans involved discussing their “relationship” like civilized adults. The problem was though, they weren’t talking to civilized adults. They were talking to his brother, a known dumbass, and the new Chief of Police that wanted to hunt down a bunch of kids because Jason fucking Carver told him to.
So he was going to handle this the way he handled every shitty situation thrown his way. He was going to wing it. It had worked for him thus far and it hadn’t failed him yet. So, for the rest of the Party’s meeting, Steve zoned out. He thought about how fucked he was going to be when his parents found out about this, how much shit he’d have to take from the rest of the town, and how ostracised he’d be. But it was the only way to clear Eddie’s name.
Eddie had jumped into the lake after him and saved his life before protecting Dustin from demobats. He was a part of the Party now and Steve would do anything to protect the Party. So, he was fine with ruining his reputation and probably being disowned by his parents for  tainting the Harrington name. As long as Eddie was okay in the end, nothing else mattered.
~*~*~*~
They neglected to tell Eddie the plan. He hadn’t seen any of the Party members since the police realized he was being treated at the hospital and barred anyone from seeing him until they questioned him. He was just minding his own business, ignoring the two doofus cops trying to question him, and looking forward to whatever the Party came up with to clear his name. Eddie wasn’t sure if whatever their plan was was going to work or even if they meant what they’d said. However, he had hope. Mostly because the only other option would be joining his dad in a cell for murders he didn’t even commit.
That’s when it happened. Steve stormed into his hospital room with a flourish, slamming the door against the wall and scaring the two cops.
Eddie watched as the tall one’s eyes narrowed, “Steve, you better have a good explanation for this one-“
He didn’t pay attention to what else was said. One minute, he was looking at an angry Harrington walking into his room and the next, said Harrington was kissing him. On the lips!
Mother of fuck, Eddie had died and gone to heaven because all of his dreams were coming true. He didn’t know what Steve was playing at but Eddie wasn’t complaining. He just slipped his eyes closed and kissed him back with equal fervor.
He was pulled from their passionate kissing by a loud, “Son of a bitch, Steve! The murderer?! What the fuck? I thought your taste was bad when you were dating the priss but now this? Jesus Fuck, bro!”
“Officer Callahan, please maintain your composure.”
“My composure?!” His voice was shrill as he shrieked in his own defense. “Powell, my brother is macking on fucking Munson! What the fuck? How am I supposed to maintain my composure?!”
Eddie pulled away from Steve, “your brother is Officer Callahan?”
“Oh, I’m sorry. Did that not come up when you were defiling my baby brother?!” Callahan yelled at him, waving his hands in the air maniacally.
“No, actually. It didn’t,” Eddie told him.
Callahan let out a sound of frustration before pointing at Steve, letting out another frustrated noise, and stalking out. Steve and Eddie turned to Powell who just looked tired.
“I assume this is why you wouldn’t tell us your alibi for the night of the murder, Munson?” He sighed.
“That’s right, there was no way in hell I was going to out my boyfriend. Apparently he does it himself though,” Eddie gave Steve the side eye. Why had he chosen to do this? He’d known the guy for like two weeks and he was just throwing his life away to protect Eddie. What the hell?
Powell turned to Steve, “is that true? Mr. Munson was with you the night that Chrissy Cunningham was murdered?”
“That’s right. We were watching The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Alien before going to bed. He stayed the whole night laying in bed next to me, there’s no way he could’ve murdered anybody,” Steve nodded.
Powell just shook his head at them, “fine, Munson. I’m clearing you but don’t leave town.”
“I won’t sir, thank you for doing your due diligence. It was at my expense but still, thanks,” Eddie said sarcastically.
He shot them one last disbelieving look before following his partner. Then all that was left was Eddie and Steve.
Eddie whipped his head around to Steve. “Now what the hell was that?!”
“Hey! Don’t talk to your boyfriend that way!”
“Seriously Steve-”
“Eddie, I swear to god if you don’t kiss me again in the next twenty seconds, I’ll go get Powell and tell him I changed my mind,” Steve threatened him with narrowed eyes.
How was Eddie supposed to refuse him after that?

Uncle Steve;
Tumblr media
Inspired by @artiststarme 's post here where Phil Callahan and Steve Harington are half brothers.
🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼🧑‍🍼
Steve Harrington and Phil Callahan are brothers.
Half-brothers.
14 years apart in age.
Sure, they weren't very close but they were still brothers.
Even if Phil wanted to strangle Steve sometimes for his poor decision making skills and even if Steve was miffed at him for the whole 'giving a grieving Jason information he shouldn't have been given until they were actually sure Eddie killed Chrissy, god damn it ,Phil, how DENSE are you-'.
They were brothers.
They loved each other.
They'd mourned their many shared cousins and grandparents together and bitched about their dad together whenever he pissed them both off at the same time.
They were brothers.
So it really shouldn't have been that much of a surprise that Phil trusted no else to watch his three year old son, Zane.
Zane, who had an odd obsession with the military and said creepy things at times.
Zane, who adored his uncle Steve.
Zane.... who was paying Steve absolutely ZERO attention as he rambled to Robin about his favorite color 'Cameo' (which neither of them had the heart to correct him on) in her lap.
Steve huffed, fighting back a smile.
"If I didn't know better, I would say that you were trying to steal him from me."
Zane kept babbling. Paying his comment no mind. But Robin?
She just smirked at him, looking more mischievous than the party did on a bad day.
"You're absolutely right. I am stealing him from you. I'm his favorite."
"You can't be his favorite. I'm actually related to him!"
"You're also related to your dad and you don't like him."
"...Good point."
"so you admit that I'm his favorite?"
"Absolutely not! I'm his favorite!"
"Well, since we're platonic soulmates we're basically one person so I'm technically his favorite either way."
Steve stared at her.
"I don't think that's how it works-"
"Then admit I'm his favorite."
"Never!"

Baywatch AU
It was going to be a good day. The weather was supposed to be a solid ninety degrees with scattered clouds, some morning winds and Jim was looking at a long day of vetting would-be lifeguards. Before his day could begin, he decided to start it off just like every other day. Jogging. Jim jogged slowly down the beach, his gaze never wavering from the distant pier he could just make out through the haze of heat. Joyce would be setting up tower eleven soon, so Jim felt no rush on his morning run and decided to take the scenic route.
He ran by Troy and James, who looked like they were about to hit the waves. Jim stopped just long enough to let the boys know that the wind was pretty rough and would be until noon before moving on. He went through his usual path of talking to the regular beach goers, until he came upon two guys getting a ticket from Callahan. The officer looked half asleep and seemed to be burning under the sun right before Jim’s eyes.
“What’s up Phil?” Jim came to a stop beside the beat cop, the two kids decided to take that as their que to hit the road, “how’s the wife? Still dealing with your sorry ass.” He huffed a laugh and Callahan grinned, before realizing he was losing his ticketees.
“Motherfu- hey!” Callahan raced after the two. Jim made his hasty retreat before Phil turned his annoyance onto him.

“What are we doing here man? Tryouts aren’t until 1:30.” Jonathan ignored Will’s complaints and kept snapping pictures. He needed them for his blog and while Will usually didn’t seem to mind, it was hot and the sun hadn’t even finished rising yet, so he couldn’t really blame him. “Oh, I see.” Will laughed, a shit eating grin adorning his face.
Jonathan was suddenly hoping his burn would cover the blush that was on his face, as both of them watched the lifeguard that was on duty. She was beautiful, with big hazel eyes that Jon never knew if they were green or brown. Even her hair was something else, cropped around her shoulders and always looking the right amount of wet. Nancy Wheeler was a sight. Jonathan snapped a picture as she ran towards them.
“Hey Jonathan!” She stopped in front of them, smiling down at Will where he was crouched over a dead horseshoe crab, “it’s Jonathan right, you excited for the tryouts?” Jonathan knew she had asked him something, but for the life of him Jon couldn’t stop staring at the way the sun seemed to make Nancy’s skin glow.
“Uh, yeah his names Jonathan,” Will stood up and dusted his hands off on his shorts before offering his hand for Nancy to shake. “I’m his brother Will.”
“Nancy,” she smiled. Nancy glanced around before looking back at Jonathan, “well it was nice to meet you. Good luck today.” Jonathan and Will watched as she turned and jogged off. How she could run through sand and make it look flawless was beyond Jon, but he could watch her all day.
“She’s nice,” Will observed, “and she seemed to really like what you had to say.”
Jonathan turned away from Nancy’s shrinking figure, “what? Really?”
“God no,” he snorted, “she was nice, friendly and you said shit.”
___
He loved the ocean, the endless view of water that had no signs of stopping and the sun. He loved the sun, Billy liked to get up real early, before Neil went off to work. Just so he could get a glimpse of the sunrise. So when he saw a poster about lifeguard tryouts, well, Billy wouldn’t pass up the chance to work at the very beach he grew up going to. It also didn’t hurt that a lot of people who went to the beach weren’t bad on the eyes. Of course, when he left, Billy didn’t expect to have to drag Max along with him. At least Max would stay out of his way and him hers.
He tossed the cigarette he’d been sucking on out the window. Max had long since left with some quarters to go play on the boardwalks arcade, so Billy had plenty of time to people watch. And people watch he did, specifically one individual who was walking towards his camaro. Billy climbed out of the car and casually brushed his hair out of his face, his eyes never leaving the guy heading his way.
Maybe it was the bathing suit he was wearing, black spandex that seemed to have rode up his tan thighs and left nothing to the imagination, but jesus christ- his legs were a mile long. Even the candy stripe button up, tied at his waist, revealed the guys flat soft belly. Billy wanted to lick him.
“Hey, the name’s Billy-” he didn’t even get his last name out before he was leaning back and closing the camaro’s door to avoid the guys surfboard.
“And no fucks were given,” the guy mumbled, not even sparing Billy a glance. He had never been brushed off so easily, but Billy never stepped down from a challenge and the guy was a challenge. He loved the chase and as he followed the guy over to the sign-up table and overheard a woman say his name, Billy had a feeling Steve was going to be force of nature.
