in the bustling city, where skyscrapers reached for the sky and the streets buzzed with life, you roamed the labyrinthine streets. you were captivated by the allure of exploration, finding solace in the anonymity of your adventures.

with each step, you delved deeper into the city's hidden corners, unearthing forgotten stories and forgotten places. it was during one of these solitary walks that you found yourself caught in an unexpected encounter.

as you turned a corner, your eyes widened in surprise as you came face-to-face with the formidable ninja turtles. without a moment's hesitation, the turtles recognized you as a member of shredder's family and launched themselves into an attack, driven by their desire to protect the city from further harm.

leonardo, the leader of the turtles, charged forward, his swords slicing through the air. "no more games! we won't let you continue shredder's reign of terror!"

you instinctively raised your arms in defense, your own twisted ambitions fueling your determination. despite being outnumbered and facing the turtles' superior strength and skills, you fought back fiercely, your movements fluid and calculated.

you fought back with all your might, your attacks a testament to the shared darkness that dwelled within. however, the turtles' teamwork and relentless assault began to take its toll on you, your strength waning with each passing moment.

as the battle raged on, you realized your limitations. the weight of your twisted ambitions became a heavy burden, impairing your abilities and leaving you vulnerable against the turtles' coordinated strikes.

but just as you neared your breaking point, a furious roar echoed through the alley, freezing everyone in their tracks. the air crackled with tension as shredder, your brother, stormed onto the scene, his eyes burning with rage and possessiveness.

with a swift and powerful strike, shredder disarmed leonardo and sent him crashing to the ground. the other turtles halted, their expressions a mix of shock and realization.

shredder's voice boomed with authority, his gaze fixed on the fallen turtles. "you forget your place."

michelangelo stuttered, his voice filled with disbelief. "shredder? but we thought..."

shredder's eyes glinted with a mix of possessiveness and fury. "you thought wrong. y/n here and i share a bond that none of you can comprehend."

as the turtles struggled to regain their footing, shredder advanced, his movements a deadly dance of precision and brutality. with each strike, he demonstrated his superior skill and unwavering loyalty to you.

donatello gritted his teeth, his voice laced with determination. "we won't let you corrupt them further, shredder."

corrupt? what was he on about?

shredder laughed, the sound echoing through the alleyway. "they are already beyond your reach. they revel in our shared darkness, and together, we will reshape this city in our image."

as you watched in disbelief, shredder's attacks became more ruthless and deadly. the turtles, despite their valiant efforts, fell one by one, their strength extinguished by the relentless onslaught.

the once vibrant and spirited warriors now lay motionless, defeated by shredder's overwhelming power. a mix of anger and sorrow welled up within you as you witnessed the tragic scene unfolding before them.

tears streamed down your face as you turned your gaze toward shredder, your voice trembling with rage. "how could you? this isn't what i wanted!"

shredder's eyes filled with twisted delight. "did you truly believe they could stand against me? they were mere obstacles in our path, y/n. now, there is only you and me."

you had believed in a shared destiny, a bond that went beyond blood, but now it was clear that shredder had manipulated you all along.

"no!" you screamed, a mix of anguish and fury in your voice. "you're not my family. you're a monster!"

shredder's laughter filled the air, chilling and mocking. "oh, my dear y/n, don't be foolish. you belong to me, body and soul. together, we will wipe out this world. "

shredder's eyes narrowed, his grip tightening on his weapon. "you cannot defy me, y/n. i am your destiny."

but you shook your head, your gaze steady. "destiny is not something predetermined. it is a choice we make. and i choose to break free from your hold, to find my own path."

as you took a step forward, shredder lunged, but you deftly evaded his attack. your movements were no match for his expertise. with a swift and calculated strike, shredder managed to land a powerful blow, knocking you to the ground.

you groaned in pain, your vision blurred as you struggled to regain your senses. shredder stood over you, a mixture of concern and adoration in his eyes. he couldn't bear to see his sibling hurt, even in the midst of their conflict.

"i won't let you slip away from me," shredder whispered, his voice filled with a mix of desperation and longing. "you are my blood. you mean everything to me. i can't lose you."

disoriented and weakened, you looked up at shredder, a mix of confusion and fear in your eyes. you could sense the depth of his emotions, his overwhelming sibling love for you. it was a love that bordered on possessiveness but didn't cross the line into obsession.

he knelt beside you. "you have to understand, y/n. i never meant for it to come to this. i only want to protect you, to keep you safe."

despite your protests and pleas, shredder remained resolute in his decision. he had grown tired of playing by anyone else's rules, including those of his sibling. with a steely determination, he firmly grasped your arm and pulled you along, ignoring your resistance.

"no more, y/n. i've heard your words" shredder declared, his voice filled with a mix of authority and conviction. "i know what's best for us, and it's time you realize that too."

you struggled against shredder's grip, frustration etched on your face. "this isn't right, saki. we can't simply disregard everything and everyone else. there are consequences to our actions!"

shredder's grip tightened, his eyes narrowing with a fierce determination. "consequences be damned! i will not let anyone or anything stand in our way!"

as you continued to walk, you could sense the unwavering resolve emanating from shredder. it was a force that both intrigued and frightened you—a display of power that seemed unstoppable.

"listen to me, y/n," shredder's voice softened slightly, but his determination remained unwavering. "i love you more than anything in this world, and i'm willing to do whatever it takes to ensure our future. trust me, even if it means going against your wishes."

you felt torn.

"together, we will forge a new destiny," shredder whispered, his voice filled with equal parts determination and possessiveness. "i will protect you, guide you, and together, we shall shape the world in our image."

you looked into shredder's eyes, grappling with conflicting emotions. you knew that the road ahead would be fraught with challenges and sacrifices, but there was a twisted allure in shredder's unwavering conviction.

in that moment, you made a choice—a choice to follow shredder, not out of blind loyalty, but out of a burning desire to uncover the truth, to understand the depths of his obsession and the price you would have to pay.

I mentioned in a reblog thing that I'd wanted to make a Rise comic series called "ROTTMNT: UNPAUSED" and I hinted to one of the finale episodes being called "Mikey's Birthday Bash"

Well I'm gonna infodump about that now...

So basically the episode started off with Mikey waking everyone up for a special breakfast to celebrate his bday, only to discover that not only did his brothers forget his bday, they all made plans of their own. To quickly make up for it, the guys take him into the Hidden City for a quick shopping spree before they all have to leave for their engagements. While Mikey is looking for something to buy, he overhears his brothers conversing about how in the next year, Raph won't be a TEENAGE mutant ninja turtle anymore (he is 17 currently). Donnie adds that he is already looking for colleges to join and hopes for an early admission. Leo also admits he has been planning for the future. Mikey realizes that his brothers are all planning to leave and grow up, which he is not ready for. He runs away crying, and meets a strange old hag who sells him a "special" birthday candle, which she promises will grant his biggest birthday wish.

Mikey finds his bros again and uses the candle on a meager cupcake they got for him. As soon as he blows the candle out, the four are transported into a version of the Battle Nexus, trapped there along with every other character from the show (and my comics) by the hag who sold Mikey the candle. She reveals that Mikey's wish was for "everyone to spend my birthday together", and the only way for them to escape is for the turtles to win the tournament! The bros are furious at Mikey for making the wish, and Mikey promises to get through the games as quickly as possible so they can get back to their plans and leave.

The hag states that the turtles will be pitted against their previous enemies, and with each round they win they'll will receive more allies. Anyone KO’d will be eliminated from the round and sent to watch in the audience, and upon the ending of the game all contestants will be returned to their last location. The enemies will get progressively more challenging until they defeat all of their opponents.

Round 1, April is with the guys, and they are up against Baxter Stockboy, Albearto, and the Purple Dragons.

Round 2, the Casey Joneses join the fight against the Foot Clan.

Round 3, Draxum, Splinter, Big Mama, and the two missing siblings hinted at by the writers join against the evil league of mutants and the Mud Dogs. April is KO’d after getting slammed into a wall and knocked unconscious by Heinous Green. Cass is KO’d by Hypno after he hypnotizes her to knock herself unconscious as well. Draxum is KO’d by Meat Sweats after he steals his power.

Round 4, Several characters (such as Agent Bishop and Mona Lisa) join to fight against the Triceratons (which were introduced in my series). During this round, everyone is K.O.'d except the turtles. However, Mikey sees that he didn’t finish the battles in time and his brothers have missed their appointments. He feels guilty, and his brothers are admittedly irritated.

Round 5, the final boss battle. They are pitted against the Shredder and the Kraang. Before the fight begins, Mikey has a blowout with his brothers and finally admits that he was angry they were gonna leave because he was scared of growing up, as he is not ready to be an adult yet and he doesn’t want to be alone. The Kraang interrupts stating “I can help you with that” and captures Mikey. However, the Turtles get one last team member… Karai. The Shredder -- having been defeated and Oroku Saki redeemed -- turns against the Kraang and sides with the Turtles and his daughter. The boys defeat the Kraang using the special formula from the movie, but not before the Shredder and Karai are K.O.'D by the Kraang. The Kraang are defeated with the last of the mixture, but to the boys' horror they see that Mikey was kraangified, and now have to fight against him as their last opponent. They try, but are unable to defeat him due to his increased strength AND his ninpo. Leo refuses to admit defeat, saying “Mikey never gave up on me… I can’t give up on him.” He tries one last attack, grappling with Mikey and holding him down...

I happened to make sketches of what came next...

The game finished, everyone is returned home. Mikey apologizes for everything, but Raph admits that he isn’t ready to grow up yet either, and he never wants to leave Mikey alone. He found out the hard way what that felt like, and the brothers agree to wait a little longer to grow up and enjoy being the teenage mutant ninja turtles while they can. Back at the lair, everyone bursts in to make sure Mikey is okay. They spend the rest of the day with him, enjoying his birthday...

So yeh that's that

I’m really looking forward to more of Leo and Mikey interacting! We haven’t gotten the chance to see them have a relationship beyond flashbacks to when the two were young or the tiny snippets you give outside the current comic. Usagi clearly seems to be a massive part of Leon’s recovery, Raph seems to be the sibling who will be facing the brunt of Leo’s rage, and the disaster twins in Rise are a law- but Michael is still such a kind and loving presence that I can’t imagine he isn’t a massive reminder to Leo that the world isn’t as worthless as Oroku Saki tried to make it.

Love my tide-pod babies in every iteration, the two ingenuitive minds of the 5

This arc is definitely gonna be for the Tide-pod duo lovers! Mikey is ready to burn down the whole Foot Compound to get to Leo. And he will drag his brother kicking and screaming back into their loving family, if he has to.

Usagi will be a huge part of Leo’s recovery after the Shredder!Leo Arc, but not really while Leo is reacclimatizing to the family. Usagi knows the proper thing to do is step back, and let the Hamatos get reacquainted on their own. They’ll have enough to worry about without him in the mix. Also in Usagi’s mind, he’s only on the current mission to make things right, and offer his knowledge of Saki’s private Compound, but he’s still very much convinced that Leo doesn’t want to be saved, even if it would mean death. However, Cass asked for his help, and he’s gotten to know Mikey and Raph pretty well, so he wants to at least do what he can.

It won’t be until later, when Usagi can see that Leo is finally someone he can get to know, instead of this mysterious blank canvas with nothing real behind it. And that growth will be thanks in large part to Mikey. Because you’re right, Leo will benefit greatly from having that sunshine back in his life—he’s been denied it for too long. He’s lost any and all hope he had, and Mikey will help Leo discover it again.

A nice detail that I kind of noticed was that the Rise opening in season 2 is slightly different than it is in season 1

When we see inside the Turtle Tank when Leo lands on top of it, originally in season 1 only April & Donnie are in the Turtle Tank but in season 2 Splinter is with them as well.

Another interesting change between season 1 & 2 is that the group of villains that we see, changes between seasons. In season 1 we see Meat Sweats, Hypno, Warren, Repo, Big Mama & a bunch of Mutant Silver Fish.

However in season 2 we see that Meat Sweats & Big Mama have been replaced by Sloppy Joseph (the mutated sloppy joe that Draxum kept from the episode Mystery Meat) & Harold (the botanical gardens grounds keeper/ security guard who mutated in the episode How to Make Enemies and Bend People to Your Will)

The Mutant Silver Fish also Disappear from the openings between seasons 1 & 2 (maybe to represent the Turtles dealing with bigger, more serious threats?) however there are other additions

Mrs Nubbins (Repo’s cat) now appears in the season 2 opening alongside Repo Mantis possibly representing how Mrs Nubbins got mutated at some point in the middle of season 1 as the cat actually appeared pre-mutation in the episode Repo Mantis.

Ghostbear: Peekaboo losers!

Mikey, Leo, April & Donnie: Ghost Bear!?

Raph: Oh! Love the new look! Oooh hey, can I get a quick selfie?

Ghostbear who has also been added to the season 2 opening as similar to Mrs Nubbins, Ghost Bear also mutated in the middle of season 1 when he mutated in the episode Snow Day.

Hypno: That’s my Warren! Oh, it’s good to have ya’ back roomie/ magical assistant/ friend. Doves! Let’s go make fun of game show contestants on TV.

Another change is that Warren has switched from sitting on Meat Sweat’s shoulder to sitting on Hypno’s shoulder which might represent relationship that developed between Warren & Hypno in season 1.

Casey/ Foot Recruit was also added to the season 2 opening possibly representing how Foot Recruit was kind of supposed to have a bigger role throughout season 2 as apparently it had been planned that April & Cassandra were supposed to have a rivalry throughout season 2 but unfortunately most of their episodes were cut & the only one we got was Always Be Brownies.

Though most of Casey’s episodes were cut from season two she still did have quite a journey with her ending up on the side of the Hamato Clan so it would have been interesting to see where she would have been in an opening had Rise gotten a season 3.

Especially since it seems as though in the time between the end of season 2 & the movie Cassandra has been placed firmly in the ‘friend’ category for the Hamato Clan according to April as she calls Cassandra ‘our friend’.

April: Whoa! Looks like our friend Cassandra here has been busy

Finally, the final change between the season 1 & 2 openings is that Draxum has been replaced by Shredder as the seasons ‘big bad’ which makes sense as Draxum has his redemption arc in season 2 starting in the episode Repairin’ the Barron

Draxum: I told you Carol I do not want to meet your daughter

Karai: Thank you my young Hamato’s, we will always be with you

Oroku Saki was freed from the Dark Armour at the end of season 2 & went off to be with the other Hamato spirits so if Rise had gotten a season 3 a new Big Bad would have ended up in the spot of Draxum & Shredder

The ‘Big Bad’ of season 3 could have possibly been one of the Krang or Big Mama as though the Krang were always meant to be the movie’s antagonists we do know that at least one Krang was left on earth at the end of the movie.

However Big Mama could also possibly be a contender for the ‘Big Bad’ of season 3 as we know that the original outline for the third season was meant to be the Turtles looking for the two missing Turtle siblings & with the fact that Big Mama’s Assistant has been implied by the Rise team to have been one of the two missing siblings it’s possible that the Hamato Clan could have come into more direct conflict with Big Mama in the third season.

In the movie Krang Prime’s throne was made out of a Triceraton skull meaning that Triceraton’s do most likely exist in the Rise universe so the ‘Big Bad’ of season 3 might very well possibly been a Triceraton invasion.

Leo: They wanted to wipe out their ancient enemy the Krang

In the 2012 series one of the reasons for the Triceraton’s invasion was due to the Krang’s presence on Earth. A lot of the people who worked on the 2012 series also worked on Rise as well & as such some similarities between the two shows can sometimes be seen (such as both iterations having April & Casey be teens). It’s possible that Rise could have another similarity to the 2012 series by having the Triceratons come to Earth as a response to the Krang’s own presence there.

If the Triceratons do come to earth due to the Krang’s presence there then the events of the movie could possibly set up the Krang as the series next big bad.

Anyway the differences between the season 1 opening and the season 2 opening include:

Splinter being added to the Turtle Tank with April & Donnie

New villains in the villain group shot

A different ‘Big Bad’ in the final scene

So it is possible if Rise had gotten a season 3 the season 3 opening might have had Casey in the Turtle Tank with Donnie, April & Splinter (maybe standing behind one of their seats?), a new villain group shot with possibly villains that were introduced in the middle of season 2 or villains that will be introduced in season 3 & a new ‘Big Bad’ in the final scene.

2012 Splinter - Character Analysis for fic

This note is my interpretation on 2012 Splinter and his generational trauma~

This is part of the AN note for Ch 14th, but since it makes no reference to the chapter/fic itself I guess it can be read without risk of spoilers.

Rewatching S1E8 Splinter hits Raph with his cane in the arm. Once. Firmly, just enough for the teen to rub at the spot, but not hard enough to bruise it. It’s just a tap to get his point across, a “corrective” gesture, because 12!Splinter is sensei and father, and often ends up mixing up the two. This means his “lessons” can get physical even when he’s not sensei and not training them at that moment, and Raph's overall attitude could be interpreted as defiance/disrespect sometimes, so he tends to use it more against the red-clan teen.

For someone that grew up in a traditional Japanese household, under someone that was also more sensei than father because the Hamato was an old ninja clan, I have no doubt that Splinter’s father used physical “corrective” gestures with him and “his brother” Oroku Saki (Shredder) , so that is something the ratdad sees as normal. He’s just repeating the pattern without realizing, generational trauma at its finest <3

As a father, he can get physical too. This is also the reason the 12!Brothers are often smacking each other up. They’ve been training since tots, they’re familiar with hitting each other for training, playing, and scolding, so they end up “scolding” each other this way whenever someone crosses a line, because no one ever told them they “shouldn’t hit others” and that using words is also a thing, lmao.

There’s also S1E10 where Splinter is afraid Shredder will kill them and gets too paranoid, to the point of overreacting and making his sons train to the point of exhaustion every day without any rest? (Dumb, but I fault the 12!Writers, not the character). Point is, Raph is the one to say “we’ll be ready next time” so he’s the one Splinter focuses on and puts into an arm lock. Probably his way of saying “no, you’re not ready,” and, again, no long-lasting harm done, but… Splinter does get physical when he snaps, especially against what he considers “talk back” because Raph expresses his opinions like the temperamental, snarky teen he is, so… yeah.

I think another reason Splinter has a shorter fuse with Raph is due to PTSD too, because the Leo-Raph sibling relationship has a lot of common points with what used to be Splinter’s sibling relationship with Shredder, his once-considered-a-brother. Leo is Splinter Jr. and sometimes, I think he projects on Raph and sees him as a potential Shredder Jr. and thus tends to be harsher with him.

It’s ironic, because these similarities are also his fault. He admitted in S1E11 that “competition is a great incentive to become better, but not when it makes you fight among each other” or something along those lines, which means he encouraged the competitiveness among his sons, for the sake of training, probably in the same way his father did to him and Shredder back in the day, not realizing that said competitiveness, the need to up one another, would NOT stay in the dojo, that it would inevitably leak out into other aspects of their personal life.

So yeah, no bashing, just some analysis on the 12!verse. 12!Splinter is sadly guilty of passing his generational trauma, but he has yet to realize this, and thus has not tried to be better in this aspect yet. Just wanted to clear that up! <3

Dimensional Shell-Shock

Heya, today I wanted to write a little story about the universes I read yesterday here on Tumblr. That gave me the idea... Enjoy!

Mikey was chilling alone in the lab of the sewers that used to be Donnie's. Seeing the ghost of his brother Working like I always used to. A cup of chamomile tea was drunk. For god's sake, he hates chamomile tea!

However, it was what helped him to be calm in a strange way. Well, when you're the last of your siblings alive there's not much to do. Except, of course, to pursue revenge. But Mikey wasn't so impatient as to run around and do everything like crazy. No, he took his time because he knew that an action of liberation leads to misfortune.

For first time, there wasn't anything more than peace all around him. Silence. Just silence all around. Even a small rumble startled him. "April... Are you around?" he got up from his seat to check what had happened. What he saw stunned him.

He looked like his brother. He spoke like his brother. He had the same calm aura as his brother. But he wasn't his brother. "Who are you...?" says Mikey to the strange turtle with purple bandana.

"Huh?" answers, rubbing the back of his head. "S-Sorry... I am... Donatello. I'm not from here. As you can see maybe I had a, uh, time travel or something... I can't calculate the exactly time-space that I'm on, but if you help me I can go as fast as I could. I have to design a machine that..." and like Donnie, he kept talking. And talking. And talking. Mikey chuckled but didn't interrupt him. He missed hearing his brother talking his brain out to him.

His voice was calming. And for first time, Mikey didn't feel distrust towards this Donnie. He was very comfortable.

And another crash was heard there. Now a red bandana turtle was there. This turtle He slammed into the wall and was coughing from the dust it emitted. His little brother's sword, Leo, would have brought him to a strange place. A place he didn't recognize a single iota of. He didn't even recognize if it was his lair or not. And another turtle, now a blue bandana one came. His expressions were puzzled.

Mikey stared at Donnie for a moment. Donnie didn't know what was happening.

"Uhm, where are we?" asked Raph fidgeting with his fingers. Mikey raised his eyebrows in a low external surprise. But inside was thinking, who kind of Raph he was. His Raph never acted shy, or insecure. Even feary.

"H-Hello... I'm Leonardo. And... I don't know where are we but... I think you two guys surely know. Right?" says smiling kindly at them. Mikey was taken back at this. His brothers, except Donnie, acted this soft before. What the hell was happening?

"I'm Michaelangelo, and like you, I don't know what's happening but I can say, none of you are from here and we need to find a way to take you back."

The three guys look at Mikey in surprise. He doesn't look stunning, cheerful... He... He isn't the ray of sunshine he used to be.

"Uhm... Can I ask what happened... T-To you? I mean, you're Mikey... It's supossed to make jokes and laugh around... What happened?" Asks Donnie regreting it inside. He knows that to get Mikey so serious something very serious must have happened.

"I... I lost my family. The foot clan killed all of them. Oroku Saki had a grandson, Oroku Hiroto. As always, with lies he promised to take all the clan down... And he did."

Everyone's expressions darkened. Imagine that your sweetest little brother is left alone and has to face such a vile villain alone... It broke their hearts. They quickly began to imagine that situation for their Mikeys. They quickly run to hug Mikey. In other circumstances, he would have been able to hide his emotions very well... But I couldn't. She had been struggling with depression for so long, that added up to the fact that a cuter, more understanding version of her siblings to be there with him. It made him burst into tears.

Meet my new au Finding Our Paths. A Kraang Zombie Apocalypse au heavily inspired by 2012 and Rise. I finished designs for the turtles, April, Casey, and Casey's little sis kast night so i figured I'd share!

And separated so you can see parts that are covered.

For some info:

Donnie is a Wood Turtle. She goes by They/She and is 17. They are the oldest sibling and are traveling with her Uncle, Oroku Saki, their cousin, Oroku Karai, amd Karai's girlfriend Shinigami.

Leona is a Common Snapping Turtle. She goes by She/Her and is 16. She is traveling woth her Aunt, Hamato Mio, and her new best friend(and crush) Miwa!

Mikey is a Chinese Softshell. He goes by any pronouns and is 15. She is staying at a camp run by Baron Draxum and is dating their campmates Mondo and Renet.

Rafi is a Leatherback Sea Turtle. They go by They/Them and is 15. They are traveling with their new friends April O'Neil, Casey Jones, and Casey's little sister, Delilah.

April O'Neil is part Kraang. She goes by She/They and is 15. As stated above she travels with Casey, Delilah, and now Rafi. Due to being part Kraang they have powers but is often too scared to use them because people have tried to kill her. They stick to their metal and nail filled bats.

Casey Jones is a human. He goes by He/They/She and is 16. They use their old hocmet supplies and spray paint bombs as defense. She has taken care of his little sister since the Apocalypse started.

Delilah Jones is a human. She uses She/her and is 5. She has to wear leg braces do to a condition that makes her leg muscles weak but since they are old she still cannot walk.

I may decide to create an ask blog for them. Who knows.

Summary - While in battle with The Shredder, the turtles realize they can't beat him this time around. Raphael chooses to sacrifice himself in order to save his brothers.

Raph and his brothers were in a battle with The Shredder for what felt like hours now. After an hour of fighting Foot Soldier after Foot Soldier, Dogpound and Fishface. Dogpound hit Mikey square in the jaw, sending him flying and hitting the opposing wall.

“Mikey!” All of the other turtles yelled in unison.

Dogpound cracked his knuckles. “That’s more like it,” he growled.

Donnie ran over to Mikey, while Raph and Leo stayed behind to fight. “He’s out cold!” Donnie yelled back to them.

“Shit!” Raph grunted between labored breaths.

“We need to get out of here!” Leo called out.

Raph and Leo’s shells knocked together. Both of them were fighting off groups of Foot.

“Dogpound’s gonna get Donnie!” Raph yelled.

Without saying anything, Leo and Raph both pushed through the Foot, and ran behind Dogpound. Leo slashed his legs and feet, while Raph ran up his back and stabbed his Sias into his shoulders. Dogpound howled out in pain and threw Raph off his back, sending him hurling to the ground. His back stung from the impact, and he was immediately worried his shell was cracked. But he felt a sense of pride when he saw Dogpound run out the big room. He slowly pushed off the ground and stood up. “You think we’re done here?” Raph called out to his brothers after looking around the room. No other enemies were standing.

“God, let’s hope so,” Leo said. “How’s Mikey holding up?”

“Still unconscious, but he’s stable! He’ll be okay!” Donnie yelled from where he was kneeling over Mikey.

“Great, let’s go,” Leo said.

“Not if I can help it,” the cold voice of The Shredder said from the front of the room.

They all whipped around. “Not you!” Raph groaned.

The Shredder flashed his Steel Claws at the brothers. “I’m disappointed my men could only knock one of you out, but I’m confident I’ll be able to finish the job.”

“I wouldn’t be too confident there,” Raph threatened, but was ultimately unsure if they could take him.

Shredder pulled a lever sitting above a button that were both connected to the front wall he was standing at, and a large cannon lowered down from the ceiling. “If I can’t finish the job, I’m confident this will,” he said.

“Jesus,” Donnie whispered under his breath. Just by looking at it, he could tell this wasn’t just a regular cannon. It was infused with Kraang technology. Donnie shook his head. “Guys?” He yelled to his brothers. “This is, like, really bad!”

“I’m gonna crush your ass!” Raph yelled as he lunged at The Shredder. In one swift movement, The Shredder moved out of the way, and at the same time, hit Raph in the stomach with the back of his closed fist. The blunt side of his Steel Claws hitting him. Raph slid across the floor and quickly got back up, not showing the damage Shredder did.

While that was happening, Donnie and Leo both jumped on him. Leo from the front, and Donnie from the back. Donnie got one hit in, smacking his staff on Shredder's back, but causing no real damage due to his armor. Leo, on the other hand, hadn’t been able to get a hit in before he was sent flying backwards. Raph rushed over to Leo’s side and helped him up. Donnie was in combat with The Shredder now. He was very good at blocking Shredder’s attacks, but he wasn’t landing any himself. Raph ran and hit The Shredder in the back with his Sai, sending Shredder stumbling forward, but not falling to the ground. Shredder swung back at Raph, but Raph caught Shredder’s Claws with his Sai, crouching slightly to hold up the weight of Shredder's attack. Before Raph could do anything else, The Shredder yanked his hand out of Raph’s grasp, and swung down on him. Raph jumped back just in time to dodge, but fell backwards. Leo’s sword hit against Shredder’s helmet and sent it flying off, revealing the burnt skin underneath. Leo jumped back and stood in position to fight. Raph watched as Shredder turned around and lunged towards the button on the wall. Donnie was there in an instant, blocking his hit with his Staff. Leo jumped over to them and started fighting with Shredder.

“If Shredder hits that button, the cannon goes off!” Donnie yelled.

Raph ran over to Mikey and lifted him over his shoulder. He needed to get his brothers out of here. He was going to get his brothers out of here, even if it was the last thing he did. He heard Leo cry out. He whipped around and, to his dismay, saw Leo laying on the floor with Shredder standing over him. Raph dropped Mikey and ran over to him, standing in between Shredder and his brother, his first instinct being to put a barrier between the two. The Shredder swung at Raph, and he dodged just in time. Shredder nicked his shoulder with his claws, but the damage wasn’t too bad. Raph managed to land a kick to his chest, sending him backwards.

With the moment he had, he bent down to check on Leo. Shredder had gotten him pretty good. He was bleeding pretty profusely from his arm, and it seemed like it might be broken. Raph sucked air in. He hated seeing his brothers injured, and this looked pretty bad. He gave Leo a hand and helped him up. Before he could say anything, though, Shredder was back on him. He swiftly kicked Raph’s shell, leaving him stumbling forward on his face. Leo geared up to fight, but Donnie was there before he could. Donnie took a swing to Shredder's face, but he dodged. He grabbed Donnie’s arm and twisted it backwards, earning a yell from him. Raph jumped up and tackled Shredder to the ground. He was furious.

“Leave! Get out of here!” Raph yelled while fighting.

“Not without you,” Leo grunted. He was losing blood fast. He needed to leave, goddammit.

Shredder landed a punch to the back of Raph’s head, sending him staggering backwards, spots forming in his vision. He only let this affect him for a moment, though, because Shredder immediately turned to Leo, and slashed him in the chest, causing him to fall over. Raph jumped on Shredder’s back and started punching wherever he could reach. “Go!” he screamed.

Donnie rushed over to Leo and helped him to his feet again. “No!” Leo screamed.

“We have to go! Now,” Donnie said, starting to pull him away. “Help me get Mikey!”

“No! Not without Raph!”

“Leo!” Donnie yelled, tears forming in his eyes.

Leo helped Donnie lift Mikey, and they started to run towards the door.

“No!” Shredder growled, and tried to pull out of Raph’s grasp to reach them. Raph held on to Shredder tight.

“Raph! Please!” Leo screamed.

“Get out of here!” Raph yelled. “Go!”

Raph watched as Donnie and Leo paused, then Donnie pulled Leo out of the door. Tears streamed down both of their faces. The heavy doors closed behind them, cutting off Leo’s last strangled scream.

The Shredder threw Raph off of his back, sending him crashing to the floor, and faced him. “Look what you’ve done!” He cried out.

Raph launched him back up and tried to stab at Shredder with his Sai, but missed. Shredder grabbed Raph by the neck and pinned him to the wall. Raph flinched as he narrowly escaped hitting the button that would set off the cannon. “I’m going to make sure you don’t get out of here alive, turtle.”

Raph kicked Shredder in the chest and wriggled out of his grasp. “We have one thing in common, then.” Raph had a plan. He didn’t know if it was going to work, but he didn’t have any better plan. “Come at me, fuckface,” he snarled.

Shredder did just that. He lunged at Raph and nicked him in the jaw, sending blinding pain to his head. He had meant to dodge that, but was getting weaker as the fight went on. It didn’t matter though, because he still had Shredder right where he wanted him. In one swift motion, he put Shredder in a headlock, and swung around him so he was behind him. He then pushed his head square into the cannon, and slammed into the button with his shoulder. He kept both hands on The Shredder’s neck, and held him steady as he struggled. He heard the cannon fire up and-

He was in the lair. He was newly 15 years old, and had only just started fighting crime. Splinter had just finished a lengthy training session and an even more lengthy lecture about the rules he had for them: they must never kill - for any reason, they must always look out for each other, and they always must return home - together. After their training and lecture, Mikey went out to the den to watch tv, and Donnie went to his lab. Leo and Raph, not having anything else to do, and both pumped to finally be getting out in the world to help people decided to do one last fighting match up against each other.

“You sure you’re okay with me beating you again?” Raph said with a smirk on his face as they circled around each other.

“No, Raph. I’m not okay with that, which is why I am going to win this round.” Leo said definitely, then jumped at Raph.

Raph admittedly, wasn’t expecting Leo to make the first move, but quickly recovered. They were on top of each other in an instant. They both possessed pretty equal skill level, so they made for a good match. Their match lasted about fifteen minutes, before Raph had Leo pinned.

“Ugh!” Leo groaned. “I guess you win,” Raph let Leo back up. “Again.”

Raph raised his arms above his head to stretch. “Don’t be too hard on yourself, bro. Being second best to me is an accomplishment!”

Leo got up to his feet and punched Raph in the arm. “You know, I am better at strategy than you,” Leo said with a hint of pride. “Sensei told me himself.”

“Sensei this, Sensei that,” Raph teased. “What is it with you and-”

Raph was cut off by Leo jumping on him again. “I am also better at the element of surprise,” Leo boasted.

“Yeah?” Raph said. “Well I’m better at this!” He flipped Leo off of his back, over his shoulder, and onto the floor.

Without saying anything, Leo sweep kicked Raphs legs out from under him, sending him sprawled on the floor next to him. “Element of surprise,” he said.

Raph elbowed him in the shoulder. “Fine, fine. I’ll let you have that,” he said.

Neither of them got up from the floor. They both just looked up the dojo ceiling, lost in their own respective thoughts.

“Are you scared? Like, of the future?” Leo asked quietly.

“Hm?” Raph questioned. “Like, of fighting and stuff?”

“Yeah. I guess,” Leo said. “Of getting hurt?”

Raph was quiet for a moment. He wasn’t planning on having a heart to heart today, but here he was. “Uh, not really,” he said. “I’m not scared of getting hurt, no. Neither am I that scared of fighting. But-” Raph sighed. “I’m terrified of you guys getting hurt.”

“Yeah?” Leo said softly.

“Yeah,” Raph said.

Leo chuckled softly. “I guess that’s an answer I could’ve expected.”

They laid in silence for another moment. It was a comfortable silence, but it was also kind of sad. They could both feel their lives changing pretty quickly, and it scared both of them.

“You know,” Leo said. “That’s honestly what I’m scared of, too. Like, I’m so excited to finally be able to get out there and… and do good for the world! But I’m just so anxious.”

“Well, we’ll just have to look out for each other, huh?” Raph said.

Leo turned his head to look at Raph and smiled. “Yeah,” Leo said.

Another silence fell over them again. Raph thought about how everything was going to change. They had spent their whole lives training every day for this, and now it was finally happening. It was all so exciting and overwhelming.

“Hey, Raph,” Leo said.

“Yeah?”

“Let’s make a deal, no, a promise, okay?”

Raph raised an eyebrow at his brother.

Leo continued. “As the oldest brothers… and the ones that are best at fighting,” Raph smirked at this. “I think we’ve gotta leave it up to us to… to protect them, you know? And each other. I’ll look after you and you look after me, right?”

Raph chuckled. “Well, duh,” he said. “I wasn’t just gonna only look out for myself, Leo.”

“Yeah, yeah. You didn’t let me finish,” he said.

“Go on then,” Raph said.

Leo propped himself up on his elbows, so Raph did the same. “Let’s promise each other that no matter what happens, we never leave any of us behind, okay?”

“Leo, you’re making me seem like a bad brother. Of course I wouldn’t just leave any of you guys behind!” He said.

Leo sighed slightly. “No, it’s, it’s just- what I’m getting at is that we never sacrifice ourselves for each other.” Raph sat up. He was surprised to hear this from Leo. “I mean, hopefully it doesn’t come down to that, but I’d rather us all fight until the end than lose just one of us, you know? I mean, we’re a team. I don’t think I could go on with only three of us.”

“Huh,” Raph said. It’s not like he hadn’t thought of this before. He had actually run through situations like this in his head a lot. “If you just want all four of us dead, you can just say that,” he teased.

Leo sat up now. “Hey! I’m trying to be serious.”

Raph put his hands up in defense. “Sorry, bro. I’m just a little lost here.”

Leo groaned. “I don’t want you throwing yourself in dangerous situations just to help us, but I know I can’t stop you from doing that. So at least promise me you won't ever get yourself killed, okay? I’ll promise too.”

Raph’s eyebrows furrowed slightly. He had known what Leo was getting after, but he didn’t expect him to be so forward about it. “Yeah. Okay,” he said quietly. “But if it’s you guys or me, you know I’m gonna put myself at risk to-”

Leo grabbed Raphs shoulder. “Don’t. Don’t say that. I never want you sacrificing yourself, okay?”

Raph sighed slightly and shook his head. “Yeah. Yeah, okay, man. I promise.”

Leo smiled slightly now. “Good. I’ll promise too, then.”

They looked at each other for a moment, before Leo wrapped Raph in a hug. It was an unexpected, but not unwelcome, surprise. Raph exhaled and hugged his brother back. “We’ve got this,” he said, softly.

“Yeah. I know,” Leo said. “We’ve got this.”

He has pressed the cannon button. He had Shredder's head in the cannon. He knew it would jam and kill not only The Shredder, but himself, too. He wasn’t afraid. His brothers were safe. He wasn’t afraid, he really wasn’t, but there was a squeezing in his chest. Even in his last moments, all he could think about were his brothers. But they were safe. He had made sure of that. He closed his eyes.

I’m sorry I couldn’t keep our promise, Leo.
