Phillip became a blushing mess the first time he responded to it unconsciously.

I was planning on reading the Bridgerton Chronicles, but I heard there are many books, so here’s my question: in what order should I read them?

Also, are they really that good? How’s the vibe of the books? Is it light and funny or heavy and angsty?

Hi! I do think each book in the Bridgerton series can be read individually and out of order, but it's nice to read them in order I think. The series is overall very light and set among London's high society (with a few exceptions— all mostly in aristocratic country estates and castles). Julia Quinn does good humor and banter (and she does rely on slapstick humor and physical comedy at times... The Viscount Who Loved Me in particular had a lot of this). The romances themselves range from solid to tepid, as do the plots, so here's how I'd rank them:

When He Was Wicked: The sexiest book of the eight, and very emotional because Francesca's husband dies at the beginning and the hero Michael is her husband's cousin and Michael and Francesca were close as well (there was definitely some flirting that occurred before John Stirling's death), so cue all the angst and guilt. Flashforward to when Francesca decides to remarry but freaks out over her feelings for Michael and flees to Scotland where the best seduction scene in the series (that also uses the title of the book) occurs. My favorite thing about this book is when they're basically playing a high-stakes game of "if I get you pregnant we'll have to marry" roulette until they finally get their shit together.

The Viscount Who Loved Me: Look, as much as Anthony is billed as a rake, I really don't think he is. Book!Anthony is a messy, somewhat neurotic man who decides to court Kate's seventeen year-old sister because she's the diamond of the season, but ends up falling for spinster Kate instead. The banter in this one is excellent, as are all these moments of physical comedy ranging from straight-up hilarious (Anthony falling into the river thanks to Newton the dog) to hot (Anthony panic-sucking the bee venom out of Kate's tit and Portia Featherington uttering the greatest line in the series, "Lud, girl, he had his mouth on your bubbies"), to questionable but still hot (Kate biting Anthony's leg from under his desk, and then Anthony basically forcing a first kiss on her). There is an accidental compromise followed by a forced marriage, only after which they fall in love.

It's In His Kiss: Gareth is another rake hero (illegitimate, has daddy issues, which is classic Julia), but the true standout in this book is Hyacinth, who's a spinster but a fun spinster with few qualms about B&E, gives good banter, and has relatively lesser inhibitions compared to the other 6 virgin heroines. The plot, from what I remember is just them repeatedly breaking and entering in order to find treasure hidden by Gareth's grandma(?), with a side of Gareth's daddy issues (that... may have influenced him to compromise and marry Hyacinth). Lady Danbury has a pretty big role in this book.

The Duke And I: This was one of the first historical romances I ever read, and my first impression was that it was really cute with a simple plot: Daphne is in his third season but is worried about her marital prospects because she's seen as One Of The Guys, so she agrees to fake-court her brother's best friend Simon, Duke of Hastings, except they're caught in a compromising position, Simon nearly fights a duel over her, but they marry. The big issue however, is that Simon doesn't inform Daphne that he doesn't want children (as opposed to being unable to have them, and Daphne doesn't know how sex works :/). Ultimately, Daphne sexually assaults Simon (he says no and he's drunk, but she continues anyway) and it's never treated as such nor does she ever repent so.... bear that in mind.

Romancing Mr. Bridgerton: Here's my thing— book!Penelope is a pretty solid heroine and I did enjoy the low-stakes, less-spiteful version of Lady Whistledown, her scandal sheet she secretly publishes. Basically, if you like an underdog heroine, she's not a bad one. What I disliked was how she tragically pined over Colin for over a DECADE, as well as how her weight loss was treated as a condition to her being seen as attractive and finding love (regardless of how many years prior it took place to her getting with Colin, narratively it's gross). Colin, on the other hand, is a relatively childish hero who actually gets jealous of Penelope for having purpose when he doesn't, at one point even grabbing her arm so tightly he knows it's going to bruise.

On The Way To The Wedding: Gregory Bridgerton never quite overcomes his baby-of-the-family status, even in his own romance. He spends a lot of it waffling between two women and Lucy the heroine was just... meh. You'd think a story where the hero kidnaps the heroine (for her safety ostensibly lol) would be more interesting... but it isn't.

An Offer From a Gentleman: Cinderella adaptation but a super dull one, tbh. The way the narrative virtue-signaled with how Sophie repeatedly refused to be Benedict's mistress always irritated me. And on Benedict's end, the man has zero game, keeps hounding Sophie while she's working for his mom, and it has literally the cringiest virginity-loss scene ever.

To Sir Phillip With Love: Genuinely the most horrific of the books which is saying something, considering #4. I despise Phillip for his brand of absentee fatherhood which literally involves turning a blind eye to abuse, he victim-blames his first wife Marina for her depression (and he basically sexually assaults a depressed woman who is unable to consent to having sex and is laying catatonic under him) and subsequent suicide and CONSTANTLY compares Marina to how "happy" and "cheerful" the heroine Eloise is, and he basically sees Eloise as a live-in sex doll and mother figure. Eloise herself is.... fine, as far a heroines go. But Phillips kids? They were horrible. Eloise deserved better.

I used to say this series is a good introduction-to-historical-romance series, but I think you can probably do better. Try Adriana Herrera's Las Leonas series (stunning, gorgeous), or Vivienne Lorret's Mating Habits of Scoundrels series (for that humor and banter), or KJ Charles' Doomsday series (which were marketed as Bridgerton-meets-Poldark).

Apparently there’s a rumor going around that all the Bridgerton siblings will have their own story (but not necessarily their own season) and even that they intend to wrap it up in four to five seasons.

To that I say, AND OUT OF ALL THE COUPLES, SIMON AND DAPHNE GET THEIR OWN SEASON? Really?

I give you: MICHAEL STIRLING, who has been in love with his cousin’s wife, a Fransesca Bridgerton, for years, thinking he doesn’t have a shot, until suddenly said cousin dies without an heir so he inherits every single thing including Fransesca. It is sexy. It is fun. It is somehow romantically realistic. I could not put the book down. To this day just hearing the word “Wicked” turns me on a little bit.

I give you: GARETH ST. CLAIR, a poor bastard son with major daddy issues getting dragged by the clever and sensible HYACINTH BRIDGERTON to find treasure. It is funny. Still sexy. I smiled to myself reading it multiple times.

I gotta be honest, Saphne is among the most lackluster couples in the books, nearing Phillip & Eloise and Gregory & Lucy.

And they get to have their own season?

Ahhh Molly now I'm just thinking about daddy!Michael Stirling and would really really love to see a spicy sunday post devoted to this!

I feel like Royals Michael Stirling deserves a little bit of time to exhibit, in fact, in another life where they didn't see themselves practically as siblings, he and Kate actually would have been wildly compatible in the bedroom.

Let's See.

Francesca Bridgerton had really, hardly had a second to think since Michael had yelled out Marry me! in the middle of what was supposed to be his wedding to Princess Katharine, and she hadn't even really thought about it, something deep in her chest screaming Yes! at her even as she tried to protest. And before she knew it, she was married, giggling the entire way down the aisle, giggling up the stairs, wearing the wedding dress that had been made for someone else, made for a princess, giggling as he laid her against the sheets, his eyes burning into hers as they finished intertwining their lives.

It wasn't until their honeymoon, that the magnanimity of what she'd done had really started to settle on her shoulders, and by that point she really didn't care. She was far too wrapped up in Michael, in learning every last inch of him, getting to know more and more about him, about herself.

"Tell me what you want." Michael's voice was rough in her ear, his hands already trailing up her thigh, heat simmering in her stomach, already a little desperate for him, his eyes burning into her.

"I want you." A desperate whine.

Michael chuckled, "You already have that. Tell me how Frankie."

His hands had been a little possessive on her, moving her hips roughly against his own, bruising on her thigh and it had burst from her chest. "Fuck me, Daddy."

She'd seen it snap in him. Like a switch flipped, his eyes nearly black, a growl ripping from his chest, and the breath was stolen from her lungs the next minute teeth and tongues clashing desperately, until they'd fallen apart in an absolute mess.

And now, it was really all she wanted, all the time. Michael.

He was watching her now, at her own brother's engagement party, when he was supposedly talking to the Queen mother, a smile on his face, his eyes were burning into her, dark, setting her skin on fire, he jerked his head. A signal Come upstairs with me.

And as much as she wanted to go, desperately wanted to feel his hands against her, feel him rough, and a little punishing his voice growling in her ear, but she shook her head. Now wasn't the time, and if they kept sneaking out of public events they were going to get a reputation like, well, Kate and Anthony.

She sees the exact moment it becomes a game for Michael. His eyes darkening, his smile becoming a smirk, bowing his head to Mary as he walks away, practically stalking towards her across the room. And she knows, that she should walk away, should move, but his eyes have her pinned in place. A hunter, stalking his prey, and she lets him have it.

"Now, what are you doing over here Your Grace, that's so important you can't sneak away with me?" His voice was like velvet, low in her ear sending a jolt straight through her.

And it wasn't flattering, but whenever he used the courtesy title his family had given her, something inside her longed for him, thrilled at being marked as his.

She cleared her throat, trying for unaffected, failing miserably, "Making sure Gregory and Hyacinth don't destroy any priceless artefacts."

Michael's chuckle rumbled through both of them as he snaked an arm around her waist. "Oh let them break something Kate has far too many things as it is."

He tugged on her waist, ushering them back into the hallway before she could protest, her back pressed against the wall, his lips claiming hers roughly, her knees nearly buckling, hitched over his waist the next second, his hips rolling against her, a promise of more, so long as she said yes.

"Are you sure you don't want this?" his voice was so rough, his eyes burning into her. "I'll make you feel so good, I promise."

"Michael." A whine left her, Michael's smirk back.

"Words, Francesca. Yes, Michael or No, Michael?"

"Yes, Michael."

He had her thrown over his shoulder, sprinting through the palace before she could protest the door of their room slammed open and then closed, her back pressed against it, his lips rough on hers, bruising, already making her stomach flutter with need for him. And then he knelt.

"Now, this dress is very pretty, but I'm afraid, I need to get under it."

He was crawling underneath it, the skirt swallowing him whole, his arm firm around her waist, hitching her knees over his shoulders, forcing her upright as his tongue started moving over her. Relentless, soft and firm, punishing her gasps and moans echoing through the room, bouncing off the high ceilings, pushing higher and higher and higher, his fingers bruising against her, joining his tongue, and she shattered, her shoulders heaving, as he gently tugged her to the floor, his eyes shining at her as he pulled her dress from her body, shedding his own clothes.

His eyes darkening as he settled in the cradle of her hips, a groan ripping from his throat his lips tugging and nipping at her neck, bruising, marking her she knew, and still she wanted him.

"Please Michael."

He didn't need to be asked twice. He tugged her legs firmly around his waist, his hips moving at a punishing pace, the carpet burning against her back with the rough movements, and it was honestly nearly too much. Michael's dark eyes burning into her, his firm muscles, flexing with his movements, shining in the light from the crystal chandelier above them, his hair dipping into his eyes, the smell of him hanging in the air, his voice so commanding, pushing her closer to the edge.

Such a good girl, Francesca, that's it... you feel so fucking good... Oh Fuck. You're so good, so perfect...Let go for Daddy... Scream Francesca. Now.

And she did, her throat raw from his name already, cracking and ripping, her vision blurring at the edges a little as she fell, Michael shuddering against her with his own sharp shout, collapsing in a pile of limbs, sweat cooling on their bodies.

"Holy Fuck I love your brother."

Francesca startled, "What?! Michael I know we've only been married a few months, but just so you know: That's not exactly what I want to hear after I let you give me rug burn."

Michael chuckled, letting his beard scratch against her chest for a moment, "If it weren't for Anthony being an absolute idiot, I'd be married to Kate right now. And... I'm pretty thankful I'm not."

She bit her lip, pushing his hair back from his eyes, "I'm pretty thankful you aren't as well. Next time maybe just tell me you love me instead though."

"I can do that."

I would like to contribute Avan Jogia to this list of fancasts because obviously all Michael fancasts will be good looking, but I am firmly convinced this man also has the requisite swagger.

Manny Jacinto-my attraction to this man cannot be stressed enough. I have never see a picture of this guy that did not make me swoon. I would believe that Bridgerton women all reach for their fans anytime he shows up for dinner because I would too. He recently did a shoot and ✨arms✨

Fawad Khan- This man was unfairly chased out of Bollywood but western media has jumped to take him in. I know he’s going to absolutely kill it on Ms Marvel and then well he could do Bridgerton…this man has had South Asian audiences swooning for years I cannot wait for the rest of the world to swoon along.

Henry Golding- this man has chemistry with a potted plant. He would absolutely play hell of Michael Stirling. Anddddd I would like to hear him say “I am not a gentle pony” I will not apologize.

Richard Madden is one and only white man I will accept as Michael Stirling (and since the odds are slim to none…) He is Scottish so that would work. I would require the sex appeal of Bodyguard era Richard Madden with the charisma of Cinderella Richard Madden. Also we have all seen one interview…

Dev Patel- This one is popular for a reason. This man exudes casual sexiness. If this man winked at me I too would be reduced to nothing. Want me to believe Michael has the entire female population of England passing out…get this man.

Michael B Jordan- I do not care if its “unrealistic” or “too out there” BRIDGERTON WOULD PEAK with this casting. Seasons that came before? No one has heard of them. Seasons to come? What seasons? This would change the course of television. If the world got to see this man ready to crush some creep’s ribcage…society would heal.

Oscar Isaac-If you are a person attracted to men the prospect of Oscar Isaac as Michael Stirling should scare and excite you. This week this man told the internet they could call him Daddy if they so wished. He’s basically Michael as it is. He wouldn’t even be acting…I mean come on this shit?

MANOS: HANDS OF FATE  - 1966 on the Schlocky Horror Picture Show

OPENING; Hello and welcome to the SCHLOCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW. I am your host Nigel Honeybone, and boy do I have a treat for you today. That is if treat means piece of schlock I would rather gouge my eyes out than see again!  Some films are so bad, they're good meaning "fun" or "entertaining" or at least "interesting"... But few films can claim to be so dreadful; you actually feel physical pain while viewing them. And so take the batteries out of that remote and out them to some other use as we sit back and enjoy the root canal that is MANOS: HANDS OF FAT!, sorry I mean FATE!

BREAK :  Are we there yet? Are we there yet?, I told you , you should have gone before we left. It's too late now. There is no turning back. Mostly because I told you to hide the batteries to the remote.  So now like me you will have to watch....these commercials and then come back to...MANOS: HANDS OF FATE!

MIDDLE: Sometime in the mid 1960's, Hal P Warren successful fertilizer salesman from El Paso met Stirling Silliphant, of  "In the Heat of the Night" and Towering Inferno" fame  and "The Swarm" shame, who  was visiting El Paso to scout out film locations. After several conversations with Silliphant, Hal P Warren somehow got it into his head that he could give up the joyous world of fertiliser and makes a movie as well as anybody in Hollywood.  Which is, of course high grade fertilizer, But after pounding out a script tentatively called The Lodge of Sins, he rounded up a few college kids like Diane Mahree as the wife Decided he would play the Husband, Michael himself and threw in child actor Jackie Neyman as little Debbie which proved to be useful as her mommy made all the costumes and her puppy Shanka played the hell dog while Daddy Tom Neyman plays Frank Zappa, sorry I mean the Master. I guess the Master DID approve. After all he actually painted that portrait himself. It was his only pay check too. To pad it out he got some actors from the local community theatre, John Reynolds as TORGO!!! Is one of the most  monsters since Steven Hawkins was pre -programmed,  add a few models from a nearby Mannequin Manor modelling agency like Stephanie Neilson, Jay Hall, Bettie Burns, Pat Coburn, Pat Sullivan,  Sherry Proctor and Robin Reed, to be his cast. Say what you want about old' Hal, but he must have been a hell of a fertilizer salesman to convince so many others that he could really do this. A pity then that the camera Hal used, was a 16mm Bell & Howell model that had to be wound by hand, meaning it could only record film for roughly thirty seconds at a time. I guess that explains MOST of the choppy editing for most, though not all of it can be blamed on the camera. The Motto of the Film Became, "We'll fix it in the Lab". To make matters worse, it couldn't record sound so all dialogue and sound effects were dubbed in later. Little Debbie cried when she first heard her recorded voice. But then, I cried when I first saw this film. Or I would if I had tear ducts and ...eyes. And Twenty Thousand dollars later Voila, you have "MANOS: THE HANDS OF FART". sorry FATE.  MANOS is actually Spanish for Hands, so technically it's called Hands Hands of Fate. I guess it's lucky they didn't call it CAHONNES!  For reason totally amazing to me the majority of the cast and crew never appeared in another movie after this.  In spite of all of this, Hal somehow managed to get MANOS booked in an actual El Paso theatre, and it even got a fair amount of coverage in the local press leading up to its premiere. However, at the first showing, nonstop audience laughter prompted the cast and crew to sneak out halfway through. See if you can work out why as we return to our film of the night MANOS: THE HANDS OF FATE!"

CLOSING:   I'm Sorry, I'm truly truly sorry. It almost makes Chevy Chase's Family Vacation films rentable again.  Better Wally World than "Torgo's Bed and Breakfast."  Or the little Spoken of 2004 visit to "TORGO'S HOTEL" And yes originally Torgo was meant to be a Satyr.  John Reynolds made the legs put of metal framing himself with a little help from Tom Neyman. But then they were never shown on screen. Plus the fit was incredibly painful and to make matters worse he was wearing them wrong which caused him great discomfort and led to him becoming addicted to pain killers. Much like I will be when this show ends.  Curiously four of the actors that appeared in this film had all committed suicide within the year following the film's release. They were John Reynolds , Diane Mahree , Joyce Molleur ,the cough syrup/heavy petting girl, and Sherry Proctor the Master's first wife.   Everyone in the film could be spokespeople for attention deficit disorder. All of the principal actors continually flub lines, miss cues, stare into the camera, or aren't aware that they're on camera for the first few seconds of a great many scenes. If you watch carefully, you can also make out Hal Warren mouthing the word "cut!" a few times just before a scene transitions to another. There is also a veritable bouquet of uncomfortable silences as the actors stand around waiting for, and apparently not receiving their cues as they're committed to film. It is almost palpably painful to watch. The stars and crew worked sans pay check but were promised huge percentages of the profits. I guess you can see how THAT worked out. Except little Debbie. She got a bicycle and all she had to do was become an 8 year old bride of Satan. For which Hal got a slap across the face at the opening night. Mommy was not impressed with the implications. I guess that's why Quentin Tarintino has said it's one of his favourite "comedies." What more can any sane man say except "Toodles!"
