Some proof that there ARE elected officials out there, like Vice Mayor Sean Cummings in Oklahoma, who are standing up for LGBTQ+ youth like Nex Benedict and calling out the fact that our words and rhetoric DO matter.
[Context: In this video, Sean Cummings is seen speaking to Oklahoma Superintendent of Public Instruction Ryan Walters referring to the death of student Nex Benedict].
The media saying Nex died from a “fight,” rather than an attack, and the school saying they died from “underlying health conditions,” is just proof that we can get murdered and then blamed for dying.
nex benedict was a native american non binary kid who was beaten to death in the girls bathroom at their school in oklahoma. the school forced them to use the girls room and they still got fucking killed.
their school didnt even call 911 when they were dizzy and bruised and bleeding after being assaulted by three older girls and having their head slammed on the tile floor. they were suspended for two weeks. they died from the head injuries 24 hours later.
NEX WAS SIXTEEN. SIXTEEN. THEY LIKED MINECRAFT AND ARK SURVIVAL EVOLVED AND THEIR CAT ZEUS.
THEY WERE A CHILD.
THEY WERE TOLD TO COMPLY TO THE RULES ABOUT BATHROOMS AND THEY DID AND THEY WERE STILL BEATEN TO DEATH. BECAUSE IT HAS NEVER BEEN ABOUT BATHROOMS AND BIOLOGICAL SEX. IT IS ABOUT SILENCING AND ENDING US.
trans kids are not safe anywhere. terfs and transphobic influencers teach children to hate their peers and people DIE. i hope terfs know that they are the reason people die. nex's blood, and the blood of thousands of trans kids who have been killed, abused, and ended their own lives, are on your hands.
im disgusted and depressed and scared
important additions!!

as @minecraft666 said, the staff needs to be held accountable for not calling an ambulance and allowing the transphobia to exist
The situation with the Owasso Public School district and the Owasso Police Department regarding the death of Nex Benedict is nothing short of fucking rage provoking.
A 16 year old non-binary child was brutally beaten in their high school’s bathroom (which they were forced to use because of Oklahoma legislation requiring that trans students use the restrooms coinciding with the gender assigned to them at birth) by THREE girls for over two minutes before other students and a singular school faculty member managed to pull these girls off of them.
They had their head repeatedly smashed into the floor. For over two minutes. Their face was covered in cuts and bruises and they were unable to walk without assistance following this attack.
Nex was suspended for several days for engaging in a “fight”. (Btw 3 to 1 is NOT a fight, thats called getting jumped.)
After seeing the schools nurse, Nex was denied the option to be taken to the hospital in an ambulance as it was deemed “unnecessary” but it was suggested that a guardian took them to get checked out if they were concerned about Nex’s injuries.
Nex was then taken to the hospital where they were discharged, but were then rushed back to said hospital the next morning, where they were pronounced dead.
The Owasso Public School district has stated that because Nex died the following morning and not the night of the attack, that the attack is unrelated and did not cause the death of this child.
The Owasso Police Department claims that they cannot release the autopsy report to the public but that “A complete autopsy was performed and indicated that the decedent did not die as a result of trauma.” It has been implied that Nex died of natural causes or from an underlying medical condition. Less than 24 hours after having their head brutally and repeatedly smashed into a bathroom floor for over 2 minutes.
I don’t know about you guys, but I personally am beyond sick and fucking tired of watching republican politicians be so loud about how they’re “protecting children” and then turning their backs on trans kids and believing what is probably the laziest cover up of a non-binary child being brutally beaten to death while they were AT SCHOOL.
And what makes this even worse is that according to the Benedict family, Nex had been telling them about how they were being bullied at school and that they felt unsafe. They had told the school that they were being bullied and they felt unsafe. The school had been given every opportunity to neutralize the problem and prevent this very situation and chose to do nothing, and that negligence caused the death of a student. And they have the audacity to claim that Nex’s blood is not on their hands and that they “do not tollerate violence or bullying of any kind” and “are taking the situation very seriously”.
Nex Benedict was brutally beaten to death in a school bathroom and Oklahoma schools, law enforcement, and legislative officials are doing nothing about it.
Nex Benedict. Say their fucking name.
Attached is the link to the go fund me started by Nex’s mother. Warning, in the description, They are deadnamed and misgendered, however this was remedied in an edit lower down on the page, where their mother states that they will be addressed properly on their headstone.
I made this at a vigil for Nex Benedict, an indigenous, non-binary student who was murdered in a bathroom by some bigoted cowards. The school failed to protect them and they died. Nex was 16-a child.
I heard from speakers Nex’s age at the vigil and they spoke of two things-rage and change. They’re mourning but they’re also furious that this keeps happening. And I am too.
I’m sick of hearing boys at my school giggle slurs and then pass it off as a joke. I’m sick of being told that being trans is an internet fad. I’m sick of being told by my trans friends that their parents think “being gay is a disease” or “that they can be fixed”. Queer people will always be here and have always been here.
The American new cycle moves quickly so I beg of you-remember Nex’s name. Remember they had a cat and friends. Remember that they were indigenous and murdered on the land stolen from them. Remember who failed them.
And please. If you’re currently like Nex or were Nex-please know your queer brothers and sisters love you. We love your fluidness, your open minds. Your ability to deconstruct what we thought was necessity. I love you all.
For those who don't know, Nex Benedict, an American indigenous non-binary 16 years old, died in February 8. And I said died, but they were murdered: they passed away the day after three girls (whose names are still kept hidden) attacked them and their friends in the bathroom of the Owasso high school in Oklahoma. They were beated, insulted, and possibly suffered serious damage in the face and head. The next day, they collapsed and was declared dead at the hospital.
The school did and has done nothing. The teachers have done nothing. The police has done nothing. A kid died and the world stays silent. If Nex hadn't been indigenous or non-binary, then the whole country would have turned upside down.
Trans people deserve to live. Non-binary people deserve to live. Indigenous people deserve to live.
One of my close childhood friends is trans. He's also forced to go to the women's bathroom. Will he be the next victim? Who else will have to suffer for us to learn? When will justice be served?
Nex Benedict should still be here, alive and well. They were only 16, they are the same age as me. No child should EVER go through what Nex went through even before their death, regardless if a child is trans or not. Trans children should NEVER be scared of going to school everyday in fear of getting bullied or worse, KILLED. What children are people exactly trying to protect again? Because its clearly not children like Nex Benedict. Im so sorry Nex, I hope you can rest peacefully now, the world has failed trans children once again.....
Today, in response to the death of Nex Benedict, we at It Gets Better joined more than 350 LGBTQ+ orgs, civil rights groups, and public figures in calling on Oklahoma legislative leadership to immediately remove Ryan Walters as the state’s superintendent of public instruction; and to launch an investigation into the Department of Education.
All youth should feel support and encouragement at school, not bullying and harassment. Nex Benedict is not with us today, because those who are responsible for education in the state of Oklahoma have enabled a climate of hate and bigotry that led to Nex’s death.
Read our letter and join our demands for action: bit.ly/JusticeForNex
can we talk about how so many comments on videos about nex’s death are fucking disgusting and their the people who preach kindness and love for all and continue to say disgusting shit about a dead fucking child who didn’t just die from anything natural who died from fucking murder like god i fucking hate ppl @starrsarchive pointed this out to me earlier today as we were having our daily rant/yap session and they were so fucking real
The bullying had started in earnest at the beginning of the 2023 school year, a few months after Oklahoma governor Kevin Stitt signed a bill that required public school students to use bathrooms that matched the sex listed on their birth certificates.
A few weeks ago, on 7 February, the bullying allegedly erupted in violence when Nex suffered severe head injuries during a “physical altercation” at Owasso High School, according to the Owasso Police Department.
Sue Benedict told The Independent she was called to the school that day to find Nex badly beaten with bruises over their face and eyes, and with scratches on the back of their head.
Nex told her that they and another transgender student at Owasso High School had been in a fight with three older girls in a girls bathroom. Nex was knocked to the ground during the fight and hit their head on the floor, according to their mother.
Ms Benedict said she was furious that the school had failed to call an ambulance or the police. She said the school then informed her Nex was being suspended for two weeks.
She took Nex to the Bailey Medical Center in Owasso for treatment. They spoke to a police school resource officer at the medical facility and were discharged. That night, Nex went to bed with a sore head and eventually fell asleep while listening to music, Ms Benedict said.
On 8 February, Nex was getting ready to go to Tulsa with Ms Benedict for an appointment when they collapsed in the family living room. Ms Benedict called an ambulance, and EMT officers arrived to find Nex had stopped breathing. Nex was declared dead that evening in hospital.
They will never see light in this life again, they will never take another breath of air, they will never get to experience life beyond the hate they faced, they will never get to be a person who leaves a legacy beyond their death.
