An open letter to the U.S. Senate
Improve disabled American's financial stability with S.4102 - SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act
In the words of David Goldfarb on behalf of the Arc of the United States, "…we enthusiastically endorse S. 4102, the SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act, which would raise the amount of savings a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) recipient can keep for the first time in over thirty years. The mission of the Arc is to promote and protect the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and actively support their full inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lifetimes.
"SSI provides an extremely modest cash benefit, a maximum of $841 a month in 2022, for certain individuals with disabilities and older adults. In March 2022, nearly 7.6 million people: 4.3 million working-age individuals with disabilities; 1 million children with disabilities; and 2.3 million older adults relied on the program.
"Many individuals with IDD rely on the SSI program. In 2017, SSA estimated that approximately 19% of working-age SSI recipients possessed an intellectual disability. For many people with IDD, SSI is their only source of income without which they could become institutionalized or homeless.
"Unfortunately, the benefit’s low, outdated resource limit of $2,000 for individuals/$3,000 for couples does not allow people to save for emergencies, such as a leaky roof, car repair, or other unexpected expense. To make matters worse, the $2,000 limit does not adjust for inflation every year, and it has remained the same since 1989.
"The SSI Savings Penalty Elimination Act would significantly improve the lives of SSI recipients, including people with IDD, by raising the asset limit to $10,000 per individual/$20,000 per couple. The legislation also adjusts that number for inflation every year, a critical element in 2 today’s inflationary environment. This will allow SSI beneficiaries to use their own savings to address needed emergencies when they arise.
"Thank you again for this critical legislation."
Truly his letter is phenomenal and applicable to many American citizens. I hope you too appreciate his mastery of diction, his compassion for his fellow American, and the truth in his words.

Celebrating Indigenous Brilliance: A Path Towards Reconciliation
Shaina Tranquilino
October 9, 2023
Tumblr media
In our continuous journey towards reconciliation, it is essential that we strive to dismantle stereotypes and misconceptions about Indigenous communities. Too often, the narratives surrounding Indigenous peoples focus solely on their suffering and trauma, perpetuating a one-dimensional view of their experiences. However, as Len Pierre rightly asserts, we must also make a conscious effort to learn about and celebrate the brilliance and success within Indigenous cultures. By doing so, we can foster a deeper understanding and appreciation for the resilience and diversity that defines these remarkable communities.
The Importance of Shifting Perspectives:
For far too long, mainstream media has predominantly portrayed Indigenous communities through a lens of victimhood, emphasizing historical injustices and ongoing struggles. While acknowledging past and present challenges is crucial in understanding the systemic issues faced by Indigenous populations, it is equally vital to recognize their achievements and contributions across various fields.
Indigenous Brilliance: A Rich Tapestry of Success:
Indigenous cultures are rooted in ancient wisdom, profound spirituality, and a deep connection with nature. They possess an innate ability to adapt to changing environments while preserving their heritage. The world owes much gratitude to Indigenous peoples for invaluable contributions in areas such as art, music, literature, science, medicine, education, sports, activism, and more.
Artistic Expressions: From traditional crafts like weaving and pottery to contemporary forms like painting and sculpture, Indigenous artists have enriched global artistic traditions with their unique perspectives. Their work serves as a powerful medium for storytelling while preserving cultural identity.
Literary Legacy: From oral traditions passed down through generations to modern literary works exploring personal experiences or societal issues relevant today – Indigenous authors bring forth diverse narratives that enlighten readers worldwide. Their stories shed light on the richness of indigenous cultures' histories while providing valuable insights into contemporary life.
Scientific Innovations: Indigenous knowledge systems boast sustainable practices that have guided societies for centuries. Techniques related to agriculture, land conservation, and medicinal plant usage demonstrate a deep understanding of the natural world. By incorporating this wisdom into modern scientific practices, Indigenous communities contribute to ecological sustainability and inspire innovative approaches.
Sports and Athletics: Indigenous athletes have achieved remarkable success on national and international platforms. Whether it be in hockey, lacrosse, basketball, or other sports – their talent and determination serve as inspirations for future generations while dismantling stereotypes.
Activism and Community Leadership: Indigenous individuals have been at the forefront of social movements advocating for human rights, environmental protection, and cultural preservation. Their contributions continue to shape policies that promote inclusivity, justice, and equity for all.
Len Pierre's quote emphasizes the need to celebrate Indigenous brilliance alongside acknowledging their suffering and trauma. By expanding our knowledge about the achievements and successes within Indigenous cultures, we can break free from limited narratives. It is through this understanding that we pave the way towards reconciliation based on mutual respect, appreciation, and a genuine desire to learn from one another. Let us collectively embark on a journey that recognizes the resilience, brilliance, and strength inherent in Indigenous communities worldwide.

perks of being unobservant
It might seem counterintuitive, but the thirst for knowledge is insatiable.
Tumblr media
At times, remaining oblivious to someone speaking ill of you or a friend betraying your trust is more comforting than relentlessly seeking the painful truth. In such cases, I prefer to let events unfold naturally and refrain from actively searching for them.
Yes, the eventual revelation of painful truths can be hurtful, particularly if they significantly impact various aspects of your life. However, choosing not to dwell on them can provide some relief.
Why? Because lowering our expectations can help us worry less about these issues.
Our tendency to experience disappointment often arises from our own curiosity, which we fear won’t align with our expectations. This is why it can be beneficial to lower our expectations in various aspects of life and from everyone we encounter.
Besides, it fosters humility. The perks not only apply to us but also encourage open-mindedness and a willingness to learn from others. When we admit that we don’t have all the answers, we become more receptive to different perspectives and ideas, which can lead to personal growth and expanded horizons.
Also, not always knowing everything can reduce the pressure to be constantly right. In a society that often values being correct over all else, this relief can alleviate stress and anxiety. It allows us to take risks, make mistakes, and learn from them without the fear of judgment. In doing so, we become more resilient and adaptable, traits that are invaluable in an ever-changing world.
The world is a multifaceted place, and many issues cannot be reduced to simple black-and-white answers. Acknowledging our limitations in knowledge encourages us to approach complex problems with a sense of nuance and a willingness to engage in thoughtful dialogue. This fosters a more inclusive and empathetic society, where diverse perspectives are valued.
See? There are numerous advantages to not constantly seeking out every painful truth that revolves around our lives, as it can spare us from unnecessary burdens and protect our self-esteem.
Well, there is equal value in recognizing the limits of my knowledge and the vastness of what I have yet to discover. But at least, I find opportunities for our own growth, resilience, and a more compassionate and open-minded society.

Constitution Matters: Understanding the First Amendment and Its Essential Protections
Welcome to the "Constitution Matters" series, where we explore the significance of the United States Constitution and its enduring relevance in our lives. In this installment, we delve into the First Amendment, a cornerstone of our democratic society that guarantees crucial freedoms and protections to every citizen. Let's take a closer look at the scope and importance of this constitutional amendment.
The First Amendment: Protecting Our Fundamental Freedoms
The First Amendment of the United States Constitution stands as a testament to the values upon which our nation was built: freedom of speech, religion, the press, the right to peacefully assemble, and the right to petition the government. These five fundamental freedoms collectively form the bedrock of our democratic society, ensuring that every citizen has the opportunity to express themselves, participate in public discourse, and hold those in power accountable.
Freedom of Speech: The Power of Expression
At the heart of the First Amendment lies the freedom of speech. This precious right empowers individuals to speak their minds, express their beliefs, and share their ideas without fear of censorship or reprisal. It encompasses a wide range of speech, from political debates to artistic expressions, from peaceful protests to critical discussions. The freedom of speech encourages robust public discourse, fosters innovation, and facilitates progress by allowing the clash of diverse viewpoints and ideas.
Freedom of Religion: Protecting Our Spiritual Autonomy
The First Amendment's protection of religious freedom ensures that every individual has the right to practice their chosen religion or follow no religion at all. It prohibits the government from establishing an official religion and ensures that individuals are free to worship according to their conscience. This guarantee of religious freedom promotes diversity, tolerance, and mutual respect, creating a society that embraces different faiths and beliefs.
Freedom of the Press: A Watchdog for Democracy
The freedom of the press is a vital component of a thriving democracy. It empowers journalists and media organizations to serve as watchdogs, holding those in power accountable and informing the public. A free press plays a crucial role in uncovering truths, exposing wrongdoing, and facilitating an informed citizenry. By protecting the freedom of the press, the First Amendment safeguards our access to information and helps preserve the checks and balances necessary for a healthy democracy.
Right to Peacefully Assemble: Amplifying Voices, Sparking Change
The right to peacefully assemble allows individuals to come together, united by a common cause or shared concerns. Peaceful protests, rallies, and public meetings enable citizens to exercise their collective voice, advocate for social change, and seek redress from the government. This aspect of the First Amendment underscores the significance of civic engagement and highlights the power of unity in shaping a more just and equitable society.
Right to Petition the Government: A Voice for Change
The right to petition the government ensures that every citizen has the opportunity to address grievances, express concerns, and seek resolution. It provides a means to communicate with public officials, voice opinions, and participate in the democratic process. By guaranteeing this right, the First Amendment affirms that the government should be responsive to the needs and aspirations of its people.
Embracing the First Amendment's Promise
The First Amendment's scope extends beyond mere words on paper; it embodies the spirit of liberty, fostering an environment where diverse perspectives can flourish, where ideas can be debated openly, and where progress can be achieved through the exchange of thoughts and beliefs. It empowers individuals to challenge the status quo, to question authority, and to contribute to the shaping of a more inclusive and just society. As we navigate the complexities of the modern world, let us remember the profound importance of the First Amendment and actively uphold these freedoms, for they are not only our birthright but the essence of our democratic ideals. By embracing the promise of the First Amendment, we can ensure that our nation continues to be a beacon of freedom, opportunity, and progress for generations to come. Constitution matters, and the First Amendment remains a guiding light on our collective journey toward a more perfect union

The tragic event has shed light on a history of alleged harassment and racial slurs directed at area children. Today, we delve into this distressing case, examining the profound implications it holds for our communities and the urgent need for addressing racial violence.
Uncovering a Troubling Pattern: According to witnesses and neighbors, Susan Louise Lorincz had a disturbing history of harassing local children and targeting them with racial slurs. This pattern of behavior raises troubling questions about the roots of racism and the enduring impact it has on individuals and communities. The tragic shooting serves as a stark reminder of the consequences that can arise from unchecked bigotry and prejudice.
Addressing Racial Harassment: The incident involving Susan Louise Lorincz underscores the urgent need to confront racial harassment and discrimination. It highlights the necessity of fostering an inclusive and respectful society, free from racial animosity and bias. Communities must come together to condemn such behavior and work towards creating safe environments where everyone can thrive, irrespective of their race or ethnicity.
Examining the Justice System's Response: The charges brought against Susan Louise Lorincz prompt an examination of the justice system's response to racially motivated crimes. It raises questions about the adequacy of laws in addressing hate crimes and ensuring that perpetrators are held accountable for their actions. The pursuit of justice must prioritize the protection and dignity of all individuals, irrespective of their race or background.
Creating Lasting Change: Tragic incidents like the shooting of the Black neighbor emphasize the need for broader societal changes to combat racism and prejudice. Education, awareness, and open dialogue are crucial in dismantling deeply ingrained biases and fostering empathy and understanding. Communities must unite to challenge systemic racism, promote equality, and foster an environment where such acts of violence become inconceivable.
The Call for Unity and Solidarity: In the face of this distressing event, it is essential for communities to come together, offering support to the affected families and reaffirming their commitment to racial equality. By standing in solidarity against racial violence, we can send a powerful message that such acts have no place in our society. It is through collective action and empathy that we can strive to eradicate racism and create a more just and inclusive future.
Conclusion: The tragic shooting of a Black neighbor by a white Florida woman, Susan Louise Lorincz, serves as a stark reminder of the persistent racial tensions and acts of violence that continue to plague our communities. It underscores the urgent need to confront racism, promote inclusivity, and strive for justice and equality for all. By addressing these deep-rooted issues head-on, fostering dialogue, and advocating for change, we can work towards building a society that embraces diversity, respect, and understanding.

LGBT Pride: A Celebration for All
June is Pride Month, a time to celebrate the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community and their contributions to society. While the event originally started as a response to police brutality and discrimination towards the LGBT community, it has since evolved into a celebration of love, acceptance, and equality for all. But why should everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, participate in Pride celebrations?
First and foremost, Pride is about celebrating diversity. The world is made up of people from different backgrounds, experiences, and identities, and it is important to recognize and celebrate these differences. By participating in Pride, you are showing your support for the LGBT community and their right to be themselves without fear of judgement or discrimination.
Additionally, Pride is a way to educate and raise awareness about the ongoing struggle for equality and acceptance. Despite progress in recent years, the LGBT community still faces discrimination, hate crimes, and barriers to equal treatment in many areas of life. By participating in Pride, you are helping to bring attention to these important issues and working towards creating a more inclusive and accepting society.
Pride is also an opportunity to bring people together and foster a sense of community. The event attracts people from all walks of life, and provides a platform for individuals to connect, share their experiences, and form lasting relationships. By participating in Pride, you are not only showing your support for the LGBT community, but also contributing to the creation of a supportive and accepting community for all.
Finally, Pride is simply a fun and joyful event! The festivities usually include parades, concerts, and other events, and provide an opportunity to come together and celebrate love and acceptance in a fun and celebratory way.
In conclusion, Pride is a celebration for everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. By participating, you are showing your support for the LGBT community, raising awareness about important issues, fostering a sense of community, and having fun in the process. So join the celebrations this Pride Month and be a part of the movement towards a more inclusive and accepting society for all.

I’m so fucking tired of hearing news sites explain how higher education levels are linked with voting a particular way, but then treating it as some isolated fun fact and never asking why. Like the ABC discusses how higher education is a huge predictor of voting yes to the voice, and then it just leaves it at that.
WHY DO YOU THINK THAT IS, HUH? I wonder why having more knowledge, more exposure to other views, and more critical thinking skills makes you do things like support the voice and support progressive policies???? I wonder what that says about the opposite, that you tend to be less educated to support conservative causes??? Gee, isn’t it a fucking MYSTERY??

On The JPS Tanakh: Gender-Sensitive Edition (2023):
JPS is excited to announce the publication of THE JPS TANAKH: Gender-Sensitive Edition. A ground-breaking partnership with Sefaria, the Gender-Sensitive Edition represents the first substantial revision of our landmark translation of the Tanakh.
What is THE JPS TANAKH: Gender-Sensitive Edition?
The first Jewish gender-sensitive translation of the full Hebrew Bible, THE JPS TANAKH: Gender-Sensitive Edition (RJPS or Revised JPS edition) renews and revises the iconic Jewish Publication Society Bible translation (NJPS or 1985 New JPS edition) to reflect advances in scholarship and changes in English while maintaining utmost fidelity to the original Hebrew. The Gender-Sensitive Edition offers gender-inclusive renderings where appropriate and gendered ones when called for historically and linguistically, incorporating the best of contemporary research into Israelite history and religion, literary studies, philology, linguistics, and the social sciences to offer a faithful and accurate translation. References to persons are gender-sensitive yet consistent with ancient gender norms, and the translation strives for inclusive language when referring broadly to people, ancestors, and humankind. References to God are typically gender neutral and generally avoid grammatically masculine pronouns and labels, with careful examination of each context yielding the most appropriate rendering. To enable the tetragrammaton (God’s four-letter name) to be encountered as a name and without masculine connotations, the edition typically translates it as “GOD” (in small capitals) rather than “the LORD”. Revising the venerable JPS translation, the Gender-Sensitive Edition empowers readers to experience Scripture with all the power of the original Hebrew. It is sure to become the new Bible translation of choice for readers who embrace biblical scholarship with reverence for tradition, and for communities and individuals who adopt an inclusive, egalitarian perspective in today’s world.
Why publish an updated Bible translation after four decades?
Since the iconic JPS Bible translation appeared in 1985, dramatic changes in the English language, biblical scholarship, and other areas have made a new English edition long overdue. Readers and communities across the globe have called for a translation that remains faithful to the original Hebrew and provides vital access to the Bible’s world and timeless lessons.
What does “gender-sensitive” mean?
Our translation is “gender-sensitive” in the sense of being attentive to how gender and language function in the Hebrew Bible. Going through the Bible word by word, line by line, verse by verse, the translators asked when gender-inclusive renderings are appropriate and when gendered language is called for historically and linguistically—for example, whether a term for a human being should be translated as “person” or as “man,” and whether a reference to God should be translated with gender-neutral language (for instance, simply as “GOD”) or with a male-sounding term (such as “King”).
What’s the result? How does the translation refer to humans and God?
As outlined above, references to persons are gender-sensitive yet consistent with ancient gender norms, and the translation strives for inclusive language when referring broadly to people, ancestors, and humankind. References to God are typically gender neutral and generally avoid masculine pronouns and labels. To enable the tetragrammaton (God’s four-letter name) to be encountered as a name and without masculine connotations, the edition typically translates it as “GOD” (in small capitals) rather than “the LORD.”
Is the translation faithful to the original Hebrew?
Yes! The translation empowers readers to experience Scripture with the power of the original Hebrew, providing access to what the Bible meant in its original historical context.
Does the translation make changes in areas other than gender?
Yes! The translation updates archaic or unclear English language and ritual terminology to provide a more accurate understanding of the Bible’s meaning.

I'm so sorry
But in the alternate timeline where Bruce dies in the alley, Martha becomes the joker and Thomas becomes Batman... what if the joker-ication process of Martha is a slow thing. They all mourn the loss of Bruce in their own ways while blaming themselves. Alfred blaming himself for not being there to fight the dude off before anything happens to anyone. Thomas blaming himself for taking Bruce to the theatre. Martha blaming herself for suggesting a nice walk home.
Overtime Martha gets more confrontational towards the two, "THIS IS YOUR FAULT FOR TAKING US TO THE STUPID SHOW! YOU LAZED ABOUT WHILE MY BABY WAS DYING!"
The words getting more harsh until Alfred confronts her in the kitchen saying it's no one's fault and they should work on comforting each other instead of tearing each other apart.
Martha laughs and slowly the laugh gets more psychotic before she takes the knife she was using and stabs him with it.
Thomas finds Martha laughing over Alfred's body, his blood smeared over her face in the shape of a bloody smile and he screams.
They're both broken.
Hi!! Thank you for the ask, first of all. Sadly, everything that has to do with the joker in a story-focused way (aka where I have to put a lot of energy into) Is a bore hazard for me.
