An open letter to the U.S. Congress
👮Pass the The End Solitary Confinement Act!
719 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!
Last week, U.S. Senators Ed Markey, Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, and Peter Welch introduced the End Solitary Confinement Act, companion legislation to HR 4972 introduced in the House of Representatives by Missouri Rep. Cori Bush in July. This bill would end solitary confinement in all federal custody and incentivize states and localities to do the same. The End Solitary Confinement Act is a product of years of advocacy and activism from campaigns across the country led by people who have survived solitary and had loved ones inside, and draws from the best policy components of enacted and pending legislation. Specifically, the End Solitary Confinement Act does four key things: End all forms of solitary confinement, ensure that all alternatives to solitary are *actual* alternatives, enhance due process protections, and create oversight and enforcement mechanisms. Over 175 organizations nationwide have already endorsed the End Solitary Confinement Act and I hope you will as well. Solitary confinement is torture. We must end this barbaric practice. Thanks.

Please cut wasteful Pentagon spending now!
AN OPEN LETTER to THE PRESIDENT & U.S. CONGRESS
887 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!
I am a constituent who believes the failure to control wasteful Pentagon spending makes it harder to meet our country’s needs. The U.S. spends more on the military than any other country in the world, yet we repeatedly fail to spend the required amount of funds on food, housing, health care, and education that our communities need.
Recently, the DoD failed its audit for the sixth time in a row when it failed to account for $1.9 trillion―half its $3.8 trillion budget.
The Department of Defense is the only federal agency that has never passed a full audit and they didn’t even complete audits until 2018.
As your constituent, I am asking you to cut wasteful Defense spending in FY 2025 government funding bills.
Federal dollars that go to wasteful Department of Defense contracts are funds that do not go to meet human needs. One-third to one-half of the Pentagon budget goes to corporate military contractors that drastically price gouge the DoD by as much as 40%.
Trillions of dollars spent―and unaccounted for―undermine our security by preventing us from investing in the shared prosperity that comes from more housing, climate and public health protections, ending hunger, and more education.
Please cut wasteful Pentagon spending and invest that money in vulnerable communities.

Pass legislation to significantly expand transmission for clean energy NOW!
AN OPEN LETTER to THE PRESIDENT & U.S. CONGRESS
820 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!
Right now, there are at least 2,000 gigawatts of renewable energy waiting for permission to connect to power lines in the U.S., which is more than the total capacity of the country’s existing power plants. Wait times to connect new power plants to the grid can reach five years or more. Without rapidly improving transmission, the United States will not be able to achieve Biden's goal of 100% clean energy by 2035 or provide cheaper, more reliable electricity to American households. If the U.S. can’t build new transmission at a faster pace, roughly 80 percent of the emissions reductions expected from the Inflation Reduction Act–the largest climate legislation in U.S. history–might not happen.
That’s why I’m writing to urge Congress to pass legislation to significantly expand transmission for clean energy.
Multiple efforts are currently in play. Most recently in the House, Representatives Sean Casten and Mike Levin introduced the Clean Energy and Transmission Acceleration Act, (HR 6747) which would encourage the development of new transmission lines to carry renewable power where it’s needed while protecting the rights of communities to provide input on where lines are built and to benefit from their construction. I strongly support this bill.
But any legislation is better than none, and NONE of the bills proposed so far have been passed. This is not good.
Increasing access to clean energy will help tackle the climate crisis by ensuring the reliability of the grid and reducing consumers' bills. Renewable energies like wind and solar are quickly becoming the least expensive source of energy and we need to make sure as many people as possible get access to these clean, abundant energy sources.
Please pass a strong, fair transmission bill—like HR 6747—that prioritizes clean energy, climate change, and environmental justice. This is urgent; all of our children are counting on us to secure their futures. Thanks.

Abortion is healthcare! Pass the Women’s health Protection Act NOW!
AN OPEN LETTER to THE U.S. CONGRESS
1,391 so far! Help us get to 2,000 signers!
Today the Supreme Court heard arguments in Idaho v. the United States, a case about the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act. There is a real possibility that right-wing justices on the court will rule that pregnant people aren’t entitled to emergency care that may involve an abortion unless they’re at death’s door.
We have already seen that even with EMTALA in place emergency rooms in abortion ban states are turning pregnant people away with alarming frequency, and with catastrophic results. This is utterly sickening, and if SCOTUS rules for the state of Idaho it’ll get much worse. Congress needs to pass S. 701 / HR 12 the Women’s health Protection Act now.
Abortion care is a top issue for me. I am desperately concerned about the rollback of rights we’re seeing. Women and other pregnant people are going to suffer and even die if our rights aren’t restored. Do something. Thanks.

End Gerrymandering! Pass the FAIR MAPS Act!
AN OPEN LETTER to THE U.S. CONGRESS
593 so far! Help us get to 1,000 signers!
Rep. Wiley Nickel has introduced a bill, the FAIR MAPS Act, to combat partisan gerrymandering by establishing independent, non-partisan redistricting commissions in every state. I’d like you to support it.
Across the country, partisan gerrymandering has been used as a tool by politicians to manipulate electoral outcomes with almost surgical precision. This leads to hyper-partisanship, a lack of trust in government, and disenfranchised voters. In America today, politicians too often choose their voters instead of voters choosing their elected officials. It's troubling and anti-democratic.
Independent redistricting commissions, which the FAIR MAPS Act promotes, are a common-sense solution to gerrymandering that puts power in the hands of the people – where it belongs. When districts are drawn fairly, all voters – Republicans, Democrats, and independents alike – have a fair shot to make their voices heard.
For that reason, please co-sponsor and work to pass the FAIR MAPS Act. Thanks.

🇵🇸 President Biden: Address Repression, Rights Violations on College Campuses
AN OPEN LETTER to THE PRESIDENT & U.S. CONGRESS
164 so far! Help us get to 250 signers!
Dear President Biden and Members of Congress,
I write to you today with urgent concerns regarding the alarming climate of repression and human rights violations on university campuses nationwide.
The ongoing atrocities in Gaza and the broader Palestinian territories demand our immediate attention and action. It is deeply troubling to witness the complicity of institutions in perpetuating violence through their funding mechanisms.
As leaders, it is our duty to ensure that our educational institutions are not only spaces for learning but also bastions of free thought and diverse perspectives. However, recent events have shown a disturbing trend of silencing and punishing students and faculty who advocate for Palestinian rights, under the guise of combating anti-Semitism.
I implore you to heed the following demands and take swift action:
1. Enact policies to end the repression and discrimination against student groups advocating for Palestinian rights on campuses nationwide.
2. Mandate transparent disclosure of all university investments in companies complicit in human rights violations in Gaza and the broader Palestinian territories.
3. Introduce legislation to sever ties between academic institutions and companies or initiatives, such as Ghost Robotics, involved in developing technologies that contribute to human rights abuses.
By implementing these measures, we can demonstrate our commitment to upholding human rights, academic freedom, and social justice.
Additionally, I urge you to support legislation that protects the rights of students to engage in peaceful protests and activism without fear of retaliation or censorship. It is essential that our campuses remain spaces where all voices are heard and respected.
Thank you for your attention to these urgent matters. I trust that you will take the necessary steps to address these issues and ensure a more just and inclusive future for all.
