Yet another way Putin’s invasion has had the opposite effect.
Putin has been trying to make Russia great again by throwing its military weight around. He has only succeeded in showing the world he commands a third-rate armed forces and has alarmed neighbors into bolstering their own military establishments.
Poland is the latest country in Europe to announce a significant hike in its national security spending. Some others...

North Macedonia is set to increase its defense budget to $542 million by 2027, says GlobalData
Yes, even North Macedonia (population: 2,130,936) is not taking its security for granted.
After winning the runoff election on Saturday, Czech President-elect Petr Pavel made a call to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy –– one of his first calls after the election.
Russia’s neighbors are not being cowed into submission by Putin’s aggression. Eastern Europe in particular remembers the 40+ miserable years as satellite states of the USSR and wants no repeat.

Joe Biden and the Democratic party’s climate credentials will be severely undermined if controversial legislation to fast-track energy projects is latched on to a must-pass defense bill, environmental leaders have warned.
Progressive lawmakers and hundreds of climate, public health and youth groups are urging the Democratic leadership to stop the latest attempt by Joe Manchin, the West Virginia fossil-fuel-friendly senator, to force through legislation that would weaken environmental protections and expedite permits and construction of pipelines and other fossil fuel infrastructure while restricting public input.
According to the White House press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, Biden supports including Manchin’s deregulation bill in the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), an annual appropriations bill that will be voted on later this week. The final text of the proposed bill has not yet been published, but if pushed through as an appendage, it would lead to a sweeping decline in environmental protections and public participation without having been debated or scrutinized in committee hearings.
On Tuesday, more than 750 organizations sent a letter to the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, and congressional leadership opposing what they call a “cruel and direct attack on environmental justice communities”. If Pelosi permits the attachment of the dirty deal to the NDAA, it will be one of her final acts as speaker and threatens her credibility on climate, the groups said.
Manchin, who receives more campaign donations from the fossil fuel industry than any other lawmaker, also wants to limit legal challenges to new energy projects including the 303-mile Mountain Valley gas pipeline across the Appalachian mountains that has been stalled by concerned communities and environmental groups in West Virginia and Virginia.
Rashida Tlaib, the Democratic congresswoman from Michigan, called on her colleagues to stand up against the fossil fuel industry and the undemocratic manner in which leadership was trying to push through the bill without scrutiny. “It’s outrageous enough that Congress wants to spend another $847bn on our military-industrial complex, the largest annual military budget in history; we cannot allow them to then ram through Manchin’s dirty deal in the process.”
Tlaib urged her colleagues to also vote no. “We cannot again remain silent while the fossil fuel industry continues to pollute our neighborhoods and sacrifice the health of our residents for their own endless greed,” she said.
Manchin’s bill, described by environmentalists as a “fossil fuel wishlist”, was first attached as a side deal to Biden’s historic climate bill, the Inflation Reduction Act, but was eventually thwarted after widespread opposition from progressive Democrats and civil society groups.

Senate passes defense policy bill void of most GOP culture-war demands
From the article:
Tumblr media
No Confederate battle flag, no Kekistan flag, no Nazi flag? What a relief!
Real shame, though, that service members will have to pay to put on their own productions of Gilbert and Sullivan operettas, or "South Pacific".
Good-ish job, Senate.

#MemorialDay2023 - America is less dominant in defence spending than you might think
Meanwhile China and Russia are ramping up
“… As a percentage of gdp, spending in both China and India is roughly the same now as it was in 2012, at 1.6% and 2.4%, respectively. Yet, even adjusting for inflation, their reported GDPs are 80% and 70% higher than they were in 2012. Those figures may not tell the full story. Researchers have repeatedly found that dictatorships tend to exaggerate GDP growth. Should this hold true for China, it would mean the country’s defence budget, which is estimated independently by SIPRI, is actually increasing as a share of
gdp”

Week In Review - 3/26/23
#JakeReviewsItch Week In Review Archives
This week's reviews:
🧡🧡🧡🧡🤍 Angry Video Game Nerd I&II Deluxe 🧡🧡🧡🤍🤍 Animal Lover 🧡🧡🤍🤍🤍 Annwn: the Otherworld 🧡🧡🤍🤍🤍 Anodyne 🧡🤍🤍🤍🤍 Anomalies 🧡🧡🧡🧡🤍 Another Lost Phone: Laura's Story
Hoo. Remember the days when half the "games" I reviewed were junky, half-finished projects, thrown together at weekend game jams? This week's line-up was big and involved, which is why this seems like an appropriate time to discuss burnout. We'll also look at exciting game news and reporting that came from other writers this week. But first, make some time for our...
Game of the Week
This week saw two new games rank among this site's top five. One is a powerful empathy-generator, a game with an important message and the power to change lives. The other is a Mega Man-like with poop jokes.
Tumblr media
Sorry, Another Lost Phone: Laura's Story. I love you. I admire you. You affected me. You're the game people need to play. But what I want to play, all day, every day, is Mega Man, and between the two of you, Angry Video Game Nerd I&II Deluxe is decidedly more Mega Man-ish.
It's rude, it's crude, and it has the right attitude. Beneath the swearing, the dookie, the gore, and the funniest in-game nudity since the '80s, these are two action platformers that understand why the classics are still classic. Every inch of every stage is designed to punish any mistake and giggle at the resulting explosion of blood and guts, but it's never unfair. A perfect, untouched run of this game is possible. Your mistakes are your own. The jokes and references lack some of that same precision—a notable shortcoming for games based on a long-running comedy series—but the hits mostly make up for the misses. Come for the action; not the writing. For those who don't want all that jumping and shooting, or who aren't up for the heaviness of Another Lost Phone, consider taking a peek at my Animal Lover review. I'm not the demographic for visual novels about anime men and their bare chests, but I was won over by the light tone, lovable characters, and absurd mystery. I imagine those of you who actively seek romantic visual novels are going to love it.
#JakeReviewsBurnout
I thought reviewing Angry Video Game Nerd I&II Deluxe in two parts was a smart move. It's a compilation of two games; it made sense to review each on its own. Covering both in one 200-word review wouldn't be fair. And I wanted to be fair to these games. I'd played and loved both of them already. This was my chance to go through them again analytically; to make sense of why they worked. That's not the same as playing a game for fun. It takes time. It takes a different kind of energy. That was the biggest motivation: I thought dividing the game across each day meant each day would require half the time and energy. Well, sure, it seems stupid now that I see it typed on a screen. I considered naming Anomalies Game of the Week. It was the only one that didn't demand anything from me.
That's not why we're here, though, is it? No, I want the games that make me think and feel and forget to eat lunch. Good or bad, I want to be challenged. I want an insight into an artist's ambitions and passions. If you do the same thing every day, the way you feel about doing the same thing is eventually going to change. I'm not burning out yet, but I know the relief I felt the one day this week when I discovered I was playing a non-game; that I could get through my daily obligation quickly. A feeling like that is a call to action. What action? Don't know yet, but I need to ease up a little.
Read This!
Here's one way to lighten the load: Fall back on my fellow writers! [Edit: Whoops, I wrote lots of words. And now I'm writing about that. This was not the plan!]
Why game archivists are dreading this month’s 3DS/Wii U eShop shutdown (Kyle Orland / Ars Technica)
The imminent eShop closure has been a frequent topic in this space, and indeed, among everyone who covers games online. This article (ignore the dopey title) stands out by focusing not on commercial and entertainment concerns, and instead looking at how the Entertainment Software Association is actively making it uniquely difficult for game developers, students, researchers, and historians to legally access the materials they need.
The Racing Game That Changed Everything Was Built on Lockheed Martin Technology (Tyler Le / Jalopnik)
Do I need to start reading car Web sites? Maybe so, if they're going to be home to game history writing like this. What starts as a fun story about the origins of Daytona USA goes on to explain the industry-changing side effects of America's bloated military spending in the '90s—and why today's military budget is strictly for murder and world domination instead of good things.

New Toxic Crusaders Game!
The Toxic Avenger never should have been adapted into a children's cartoon, and that is why I love Toxic Crusaders. It's the only thing I like about Toxic Crusaders. Wait, no—that song was catchy. The ill-advised nature of its existence and the theme song. Well, if there's one thing the world's demanding now, in whatever year this is, it isn't a new Toxic Crusaders game. And if you haven't already started the video, now is the time. That is an aggressively stupid cover of the theme. I'm in love. It gets better! Who is responsible for this terrible decision? Why, none other than Retroware, developer of the Angry Video Game Nerd games! Could this be Toxie's first worthwhile appearance since 1984? (I've seen the sequels. No, thanks.) Oh! Oh! I just remembered the Toxic Crusaders toys. They were made by Playmates and they were mutants, so they were basically extra-gross Ninja Turtles toys. If this game gets toys, I'm sold.
Instead Of Resident Evil 4, I Played A Game That Uses A Roll Of Toilet Paper As A Controller (Mike Drucker / The Gamer)
I need this game right now.
