🔸The Girl In The Audience
by Patrick Lemieux
The band had agreed prior to this to allow the company Mobilevision to film them in concert. The resulting film would be toured by the company for paying audiences. Two special concerts were planned for November 24th and 25th for The Forum in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. 19 year old Sarah Bernard had no idea that attending the concerts would result in her being immortalized on film.
“I attended both nights for the Montreal shows, and was fortunate enough to be up front both nights,” says Sarah, “My sister Cathy and her friend Christian Giddings got three tickets for both nights and invited me to go, as they knew I was a fan, so I was lucky in that sense.”
Sarah goes on to explain, “I had been a Queen fan since the mid-1970s, when I received my first Queen album. It was Sheer Heart Attack, and it was given to me as a gift. I would often listen to certain songs and associate them with certain memories in my mind, and listening to Killer Queen always reminded me of the first time I played the album and broke in my record player at my best friend’s house. The album that I played the most in the ‘70s, however, was probably A Day at the Races. I had seen Queen two times before the Montreal shows.
At the Montreal shows, Sarah was able to make her way to a priceless spot perfect for taking pictures. "I’m sure there were reserved spots up front for professional photographers and media people outside of the film crew, but most people around me were simply fans,” she says.
Throughout the concert film, which is edited together from both nights, Sarah can be glimpsed center stage in the audience, occasionally taking pictures. Unfortunately, she no longer has the photos she took at the shows. Sarah says, “They were not the greatest quality, but I was proud of them.”
Of the band’s performance, Sarah says of Freddie, “I recall thinking that he made it very hard to NOT watch him. He was a wonderful performer, and I was reminded of how incredibly he commanded the stage. It had been a few years since I’d seen them last, and I’d forgotten what a force he really was up there. In the two shows I’d seen before, I was not as close to the stage, but I was still enchanted by how he worked the crowd. It really was like he held us all in the palm of his hand. Like we were being manipulated, and we loved it! A feeling I’ve felt with very few other acts. Brian and Roger were just as swift and amazing as I’d remembered from the previous shows. Watching Roger drum was almost hypnotic! John always seemed like the quiet and reserved type in photos and magazines, but live on stage, he always shined!”
Sarah goes on to recall, “Towards the end of the first show, I had spent some time trying to get their attention for a wave or a smile, and I made eye contact with John who nodded at me and returned my smile, which made my night even better! I also remember getting goosebumps during a few numbers both nights and even in the two previous shows I’d seen. Most notably during, ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’!”
At the end of “Love Of My Life,” the cameras captured a truly moving moment in Sarah’s reaction as she stands still and glassy-eyed amid the erupting audience around her. She remembers what was going through her mind in that moment, “Every time I heard ‘Love of My Life’, I felt a bit emotional. I had fallen in love with a man who I truly saw a future with, and who used to play a few songs to serenade me while we were dating. ‘Love of My Life’ was one of those songs, and both nights I can remember feeling like I was on the verge of very happy tears just thinking about my love. He was on my mind and in my heart at the time I was being filmed.”
Sarah didn’t know she specifically had been filmed in her moment of quiet reflection, “We did see the cameras at the shows, but I never really noticed them facing me. I assumed they were filming the crowd as a mass of people.”
“Those were my last two shows with Freddie”

The Last Hours Fashion Pt 2
Chain of Thorns comes out TOMORROW!!!! Just in time, here’s my analysis of the official art by @nicole.deal.art in terms of historical accuracy. I’ve already reviewed the girls’ outfits, so now it’s time for the guys!
There aren’t as many primary sources available for Edwardian menswear, and men’s fashion in general tends to change less from era to era. Men’s business and formalwear has stayed basically the same shape for the past 130 years. Keeping that in mind, let’s look at some of these pictures and see how well they hold up.
James
Tumblr media
James looks pretty good! The picture looks like it’s at night, so he’s probably wearing evening dress. The high collar and cravat is a distinctly Edwardian style, as seen in the outfit on the right here:
Tumblr media
This guy is also wearing a wrap-around waistcoat in a similar style to James’. To make it really accurate, he’d be wearing a hat and jacket, but this picture is obviously showing a fight scene so I can imagine that he lost both at some point. If we’re being really pedantic, James’ hair should also be a bit shorter, but I appreciate that a haircut is probably not high on his list of priorities right now.
Accuracy: 8/10
Matthew
Tumblr media
Matthew is a self-described bohemian, and is also very concerned with fashion, so we can expect his clothes to be a bit more colourful and decorated than was possibly the norm. This is also at night, so eveningwear again. It looks like he’s wearing a tailcoat— if you look closely, the cut is similar to the ones in this picture from 1904:
Tumblr media
The slight problem with eveningwear is that every source I’ve found suggests that Edwardian evening dress for men was almost exclusively black-and-white tuxedos. In fact, menswear from this time was pretty boring in terms of colour. However, Matthew is, as mentioned, a bohemian, and textually wears very colourful clothing. Same issues as James re: hat and hair, but I can justify it the same way as with James.
And some pictures of cravats for comparison:
Tumblr media
The gloves are also interesting. Evening gloves were almost always white, whereas these are dark grey, but I’m prepared to believe they’re either Shadowhunter fighting gloves or worn for warmth in the street after a party.
Accuracy: 7/10
Thomas and Alastair
Tumblr media
They’re wearing Shadowhunter gear, which there are obviously no historical references for, so I can’t really analyse it. I’m interested in how their gear differs— Thomas’ seems to be mostly leather, whereas Alastair appears to be wearing a vaguely Georgian puffy white shirt with metal throat, shoulder and wrist guards. We don’t have very many canon images of Shadowhunter gear, so it’s interesting to look at.
On a side not, Cassie said on her Instagram that this picture is of them in an abandoned Paddington Station. I’ve been to Paddington, and the background looks absolutely spot on. Kudos to the artist!
Accuracy: 10/10 just for the background.
Jesse
Tumblr media
I don’t have very much to say about this one. The shirt is pretty generic but the trousers are interesting. The distinctive front flap with the two buttons isn’t a style you see with the Edwardians, who have moved on to someone more resembling the modern fly. And yes, I googled “how did the Edwardians fasten their trousers” to find this information. Jesse’s trousers more resemble Regency breeches, as you can see in this pictures:
Tumblr media
This is interesting, considering the links I drew between Grace’s dress and Regency fashion in my last post. Guess we’ll find out tomorrow if my time travel theory was correct!
The jacket looks like a fairly Edwardian standard coat with the sleeves rolled up. Not much to say except that the deep green colour is possibly slightly unrealistic but it’s a tiny thing.
Accuracy: 6/10
Christopher
Tumblr media
Christopher’s hard at work in his lab, and accordingly isn’t wearing fancy clothes. Like Jesse, this is a fairly basic trousers and shirt ensemble that fits pretty well with the period.
Things get interesting when we start looking at the apron and goggles. PPE (personal protective equipment) isn’t strictly fashion, so I had to do a bit more digging into this one as it’s not an area I knew much about.
The goggles could be period inaccurate, depending on how you look at it. The first form of eye protection for welding was developed by the inventor Powell Johnson in 1880. Johnson called his invention “eye protectors” and it was simply two strips of opaque cloth that could be seen through while still offering some protection.
Safety glass— glass coated in plastic to prevent shattering— was invented by Edouard Benedictus in 1903, when TLH is set. However, it wasn’t until 1909 that the first safety glasses were invented by Julius King. So Christopher’s eyewear is about six years ahead of its time. On the other hand, it’s entirely possible that Shadowhunters— probably the Iron Sisters in particular— were using protective eyewear before mundanes and Christopher is simply adopting the technology. But if we’re going by a purely historical standpoint, the goggles are a bit off.
The apron nearly drove me insane because I could not find any sources from the Edwardian era that show a similar style. The best I could find out is that bib aprons have been worn for welding since the 1880, so it’s reasonably accurate. Christopher really needs to pull it up a bit higher, though. Your shirt’s getting scorched, mate. PPE is no joke.
Accuracy: 5/10
As a last note of interest, while I was researching I came across this image I just had to share. It’s a cartoon that appeared in the Tacoma Times in 1903 and satirically depicts “men’s clothing designed by women”. Look at these guys. The og malewives. Poor little meow meows.

Aaand there we go! I probably spent way too much time on this, but it was fun. I’ll see you all on the other side after I’ve finished Chain of Thorns. Remember to tag your spoilers!

since 2022 is almost over i’ve been thinking about all the movies i watched this year and man, nothing really compares to watching elvis in the theaters. the only other movie i had gone to see during covid at the time was no time to die the year before (since it was daniel craig’s last bond film) and prior to that i hadn’t gone to see a film in the theater since knives out came out in 2019. i’ve loved baz lurhman ever since i was old enough to watch moulin rouge, so i kind of figured i’d like elvis but man, i never expected to care so much about a film like elvis the way i do. and not only that, but the experience itself. the sheer fucking spectacle of this film is one that i don’t know will ever be surpassed for me, because i saw this film eight times in the theater and wondered if it would ever fail to meet the expectation set by that initial viewing, and it never did. not once. it was good every. single. time. i sat in just about every row you could think of and it was not only consistently good, it almost surpassed itself with every subsequent viewing. in 23 years i can’t think of a single movie that has ever made me feel that way. what elvis accomplished is nothing short of miraculous in every way imaginable. i’ve talked about how elvis as a film made me care about a man that only ever existed as a fixture of rock n’ roll music, another name for the history books, a name that mattered in the context of music my folks grew up listening to more than i did. a movie carried on the shoulders of a relative unknown compared to every other major musical biopic to come out in the last few years (bohemian rhapsody and rocketman bolstering far more recognizable star power in rami malek and taron egerton respectively), a name that i hope will go on to even greater heights as a result of his performance and his work ethic. a movie that has given me an experience unlike any other before it, one that i try to relive every time i watch it on my own. a movie that will always be one of the greatest experiences i’ve ever had the privilege of seeing on the big screen.
elvis 2022 man. elvis 2022.

I’ve followed this blog for some time now and it’s opened up another world for me. Art in my small corner of this earth is limited and distant from the average person, and if neither of those things, hidden and discouraged. It’s quite nice to get some of the thoughts and insights from the person behind this beautiful space.
At least once a year, I make it a point to make the trip to my closest folk art gallery and have noticed similarities to some of the pieces you post. The connections between that and this blog created a silent yet tangible dialogue about art for me that takes place no where else except my own mind, but is very important to me.
All this to say, I enjoy and appreciate reading what you have to say alongside the work you post. Even if it isn’t necessarily about art.
I greatly appreciate your kind words. It's bolstering when someone gets something out of something you're doing, even if it's just a blog. It's a wonderful thing to hear and I'm always surprised by it.
I think one of the things the internet is still good for is exploring visual art. And part of that, I think, is because art galleries are still around as a destination.
The internet used to be great for music and film but with film, for instance, there are far fewer repertory theaters than when I was growing up and you miss the experience a bit without the theater. With music there was an era of great music blogs (Holy Warbles was the king for me) almost all shut down for copyright violations, which was nuts because these records were all out of print, obscure thrift store stuff or private label issues that no one was making any money off of it. It's too bad that if it's even remotely possible to monetize something it's already been done (like, *cough*, tumblr)
But all of that said, we still have an amazing resource and high res gallery scanning seems to be in a healthy place. It's not a wild, bohemian collection exactly, but the Rijksmuseum will allow you to download more or less anything and even mail you a high res scan you can use for anything that's public domain. That kind of thing was once unthinkable. I've learned a lot that way just collection browsing.
I don't write much on posts because I don't want to drag them down. The art can stand, I figure. It's also hard to write about art because quickly it feels like sort of it's degenerating to "I knew from a very early age that I was special" and it gets very coded as an advertisement for someone's egotistical view about themselves. As if the art you like you are partially responsible for creating.
It's really hurt a lot of abstract art because along with the money-laundering art trade, I think people just expect a different experience of it. As if any consecrated art movement may not have humor or bad work and good work. One of the nice things about the folk art movements is that the art is so obviously personal and it can have that kind of great energy to it as it's so distanced from the idea of commerce. Bill Traylor was probably not trying to please Clement Greenberg.
At the end of the day, people really just want to express themselves and find their own avenues to understand and to be understood. Even if no one says it out loud, I think some people know inside that art can save their lives.

source: My Old Man: Tales of Our Fathers by Ted Kessler
MY DAD HAS BEEN FAMOUS LONGER THAN I’VE BEEN ALIVE Tim Healy by Matthew Healy
My name is Matthew Timothy Healy. I was born naked in north London in April 1989. I am told it was quite warm - which has been the case for most of my birthdays. I am an adult now, semi-clothed. My father spent those early years of my life working between England and Australia - back-to-back winters that had deprived him of the sun for almost four years. He told me he remembers my birthday being a bright and memorable time, golden-hued. He currently lives in the house in which I spent most of my childhood. In some ways it exists as a shrine to what once was - our family and what has been achieved. It is a feeling that is comforting and unsettling in equal measure.
My dad, at five foot seven, a baby-turned-milkboy-turned-welder-turned-comic-turned-actor, was born in the early 1950s to parents Malcolm and Sadie, in Birtley, Newcastle upon Tyne. He lived modestly up north, as a youngster and as a young man, with his brother, John, and their dog, Smartie (a dog that would later come to head-butt my dad in a moment of jestful play, resulting in him losing his bottom row of teeth. John once threw my dad over a wall, with the assumption that the drop on the other side was of equal height to that which he’d just hoisted his little brother over. It wasn’t. He landed right on his head and has had to wear glasses ever since).
He would work between various factories during the day and at night he would pursue his dream of becoming a stand-up comedian. He is a very funny man, my dad, whose charm and passion is articulated through his comedy, and his face exudes a type of warmth that one would expect from a northern English comedic actor. He laughs like Muttley off Wacky Races and whistles inane tunes that have never been heard before, for good reason.
My dad has been famous longer than I’ve been alive. He was at the height of his fame just before I was born, during Auf Wiedersehen, Pet. My parents being famous was always part of my reality: there are photos of their wedding with a crowd of a thousand people outside looking in, which is what their life has been like. I know nothing different, and it bled into the way I saw myself. My dad was a rags-to-riches character, so as soon as he saw a stem of creativity in me, he knew the importance of nurturing it so that I gained a sense of self. Me being creative was always emotionally, financially endorsed by my dad.
‘You’re John Lennon,’ he’s say, from the time I was six. He expected me to be a rock star, not in a superficial sense, but A Rock Star. Mark Knopfler from Dire Straits and Brian Johnson from AC/DC would occasionally come around to our house when I was growing up so it always seemed tangible. Rock stars walked among us. Welders, too. Dad has a dichotomy between being a working-class manual worker and a bohemian actor. I remember watching a Michael Jackson video with some of his welder mates when I was a kid and them saying he was from another planet. I thought, Yeah. My planet.
My parents always taught me that you get the good with the bad. So, if you want to live in a nice house and have nice holidays, then maybe Hello! Might have to come around your nice house or go on your nice holiday to take photos for their magazine. The Daily Mail and the Mirror went in a bit hard on my mum for a while, which was difficult for my dad as he’s not from the tabloid world that comes with being behind the bar at the Rovers Return. He had to deal with a wife who was clinically depressed, being hounded by the tabloids. What does he do to look after his wife? We got through it. And there’s stuff that people don’t know. We found a lot of security in that, knowing that they only knew so much.
I thought about this a lot when my band was breaking. My mum is on Loose Women. That’s not credible, that’s not cool. My dad is a credible actor but he’s well known too. Am I going to be perceived as an ITV boy-band thing? In the end I had to get over it. You can’t judge musicians by what their parents do. It isn’t going to work.
There are two things he always said to me, and always after a drink: ‘Be who you want to be.’ And ‘It’s in yer fucking bones, man!’ He empowered me. He acted in awe of me. Not in a sycophantic way, but as if I didn’t need his advice. If I had conviction, it would see me through - and that really rang true. Because I had a middle-class family I could get to twenty years old and still be working it out with the band.
I didn’t go to university. I worked in a Chinese restaurant, which stressed my mum out. ‘Is this band thing really going to become something?’ she’d ask.
My dad never questioned it. ‘Leave him alone, man, he’s fucking John Lennon, man.’ He believed in me unquestioningly from the moment I wrote a song called ‘ Robbers’ when I was eighteen. He bought us our first van. He converted the garage into a rehearsal space. His overt passion for us is instilled in our band. When our album went platinum all of the band made sure he got a disc. He’s the band’s dad.
The character he plays in Benidorm, who rides around on roller skates with a wig on and big boobs, is probably the one he sees the most of himself in. He told me he based it on a combination of Les Dawson and Tommy Cooper, which is my dad incarnate. If people ask me to describe my dad I say, ‘Combine those two. That’s him.’ The slapstick he plays is quite like his real persona. He’s a very, very good actor. It’s not strange to see my dad put on a wig and be someone completely different. When it looks and feels like my dad but there’s something else going on, that’s when it throws me. It’s the subtlety of my dad in the midst of a great performance that can really mess me up. If you’re involved in the physique and the aura and the knowledge of who that person is, when the minutiae of it change it’s quite alarming.
I steal a lot of lighters, which is something coincidentally I’ve stolen from my dad. We’ve stolen everybody’s lighter we’ve ever come into contact with. Superficially, I think I’m more like my mother. I’m quite erratic. I’m passionate and emotionally driven, whereas my dad is more subdued about those things. I think what I’ve got from my dad is my fear of not being proud of myself. Those are the times I’ve seen him at his lowest, when he regrets something he could’ve done, mainly from a creative perspective. I’ve seen him cut himself up over things that I wouldn’t have imagined he’d find that relevant or important. And then I find myself doing the same over a vocal take, or some small detail in a recording, and that’s when I feel him inside me. That’s when I know who I am.
Matthew Healy is the singer and guitarist with the 1975.

I put in my notice at my toxic live/work situation today.
MESSY STORY TIME PART 1 (BECAUSE I NEED TO GET IT OUT OF MY SYSTEM):
Of course, names have been left out.
TW: Workplace abuse
BUCKLE UP... THIS IS A LONG STORY THAT GETS MORE AND MORE RIDICULOUS AS TIME GOES ON
I did it. I finally put in my notice at my workplace. I’ve mentioned it before, but I was doing a work exchange (I lived where I work, with 11 other people including my bosses). I’ve been at this place for nearly three years.
Now, some work exchanges are pretty great if the owners have actual culture and work exchange at heart. However, in my situation, I was dealing with shady bosses who used a “community” of artists and economically vulnerable people to run a business without properly compensating them. And of course, they targeted people who were trying to live out their Big Hollywood Dreams.
Back in August of 2020, I answered an ad for a “Live-in writer/editor.” At the time I was living with family in San Diego and was looking for a way out. It was during the pandemic, and I actually wasn’t looking for a new place, but I found the ad coincidentally.
At first, it seemed too good to be true... and yeah, it was. But it took me a while to realize it. I had wanted to move to LA for so long, but due to paying rent to my family and other financial obligations, I struggled to save enough to move for years... that is until this live-in opportunity presented itself.
I can live somewhere in LA for free? How amazing! I thought.
Back in the ‘90s...(Bojack Horseman singing) and early 2000s my bosses (a married couple) had a brief stint with fame because they had a special on a major cable channel. Previous to that, my bosses were on public access and were locally famous. My bosses, the married couple were as follows: A sexy on-camera therapist who answered phone calls about sex and relationships, and her husband, an actual prince with no fortune and former pornographer and dirty magazine publisher.
During that time period, they made millions from their specials and coinciding phone sex business. So... yes, the business I ended up working for also operates a phone sex business out of their quarters, and they’ve done this for over 30 years. Additionally, they produced (and still produce) a little seen show with porn stars, artists, scholars, models, wannabes, stoners, junkies, and freaks... etc. They also threw wild parties after these shows and have thousands of hours of footage that is mostly pornographic. And before you ask, everyone who came through the building had to sign release forms for filming.
My bosses are totally for “ethical” hedonism (or so they say) so they adopted this bohemian lifestyle filled with sex and drugs and a hint of rock n’ roll.
So to run the phone sex business and show, my bosses created this community of live-in employees. I guess it was a sweet deal for some back in the day. Think about it: Weekly wild parties, free food, gorgeous ladies (and people in general), a prime LA location... They hired people to multitask as phone sex business receptionists as well as show producers, editors, photographers, office assistants, etc.
However, as my bosses’ popularity waned, changes in the adult entertainment industry occurred, and numerous lawsuits and financial troubles eclipsed the business, things changed. But on the other hand, they never really let go of their glory days and continued to persist with this “show” despite its nonexistent audience and their shaky finances.
Fast-forward to 2020, and I entered the picture during COVID. Gone were the days of yore where orgies regularly broke out and almost everyone working for the business was a hot young model or porn star or industry hanger-on...
My bosses’ business had relocated to a quieter side of LA county, and also due to the pandemic, in-person events had ceased. I never knew those wild party days, but some of my housemates did, including a guy I’d go on to be romantically involved with. He’d lived there for 10 years. He is the same age as me (I’m 30), but he started working for my bosses when he was 20 years old and a fresh college drop out. More on my relationship with him later and all those complexities.
Back to the ad I answered, even though I thought it was too good to be true, I answered the ad anyway and sent my writing samples. Later on, I talked with a nice office manager of the business. I did an edit test, a phone interview, and then was asked to come in person to meet the bosses and my future coworkers/housemates.

Queen + Adam Lambert Concert 13/07/2022
Hello my beauties !!
Yes, it took a bit of time, but here I am to share with you my Queen + Adam Lambert concert experience !! The concert I attended was on the 13th of July 2022, in Paris. The place was the Accor Hotel Arena. And it was amazing. You can find some pics I’ve also shared here (X) & (X)
It was my real first concert, and after almost three years of waiting, since the concert was postponed twice because of the bloody pandemic, it eventually happened. For real.
Despite a few people telling us it would be hard to get there by car, given the traffic on the Parisian ring road, we went with our car anyways. Given work and our responsibilities, it was only a one-day thing, we didn’t book a hotel or anything. The arena’s door, as well as the parking’s doors, would open at 6pm and we were right on time. There were renovation works around the arena, so we had to bypass a few buildings to eventually find our entry. We had been lucky -and quick enough- to have orchestra located tickets.
We stopped at the shop, cause yes, despite the high prices, we needed a lil souvenir for our mom. Another stop to get a drink since ours weren’t allowed in the arena for security reasons and we got into the belly of the beast. It was about 1 hour and a half before the show. The arena wasn’t really peopley, since the audience was still arriving. Lovely hostesses to guide us to our seats and also many security men….
Cause yes, in Paris’ Arena, despite this being an actual rock and roll concert, we were seated. Brian complained about it in a post. Unfortunately in France in 2013, there had been terrorists attacks during a concert and from now on, there are many rules to protect everyone. I’m not blaming anyone on this one. During the show, we eventually got up and danced a bit, trying our best to show the musicians we were having a blast. Yet, every time someone was trying to get closer to the stage, even just to take a lil pic, people were asked to get back to there seats. I’m not here to tell this was right or wrong. It was how it was, and honestly, within the audience, everyone behaved super well, not pushing anyone, trying to let those on the back see as well. For once, French people showed how it was to be polite lol, even if I spotted many nationalities, such as Japanese (the gal in our raw was so cute, she was so overwhelmed, crying a damn lot), Dutch, German, Spanish….
There was also this couple, and they were awesome. The man was dressed like Freddie during the Wembley concerts and the woman was also dressed as Freddie, but she was wearing a tiny leather short with a leather top and a leather hat and even a mustache. It was cheap, but so well done. Adam even spotted them in the audience and honestly, they totally deserved it. they were looking so great.
As we were waiting for 8pm to arrive, we could see the arena getting more and more crowdy, people clapping their hands already, everyone smiling, well some behind their masks lol, everyone already vibing hard.
And all of a sudden, the lights were off and soon, innuendo started to play, with amazing light effects behind the wonderful queen screen that was lower on the stage. I swear every time I hear innuendo now, I have shivers down my spine and I recall this amazing moment, as I was crying ahah lol
The concert lasted for about two hours and a half, with the following songs :
 ·       Innuendo
·       Now I'm Here
·       Seven Seas of Rhye
·       Hammer to Fall
·       Somebody to Love
·       Killer Queen
·       Don't Stop Me Now
·       In the Lap of the Gods... Revisited
·       I'm in Love With My Car
·       Bicycle Race
·       Fat Bottomed Girls
·       Another One Bites the Dust
·       I Want It All
·       Love of My Life
·       '39
·       These Are the Days of Our Lives
·       Crazy Little Thing Called Love
·       Under Pressure
·       A Kind of Magic
·       I Want to Break Free
·       You Take My Breath Away
·       Who Wants to Live Forever
·       Guitar Solo
·       Tie Your Mother Down
·       The Show Must Go On
·       Radio Ga Ga
·       Bohemian Rhapsody
Encore:
·       Ay‐Oh
·       We Will Rock You
·       We Are the Champions
·       God Save the Queen
I could spend an endless time to tell you about each song, but honestly the whole show was just incredible. Roger Taylor and Brian May of course. Adam Lambert as lead singer, just amazing and giving us so much. Spike Edney and Tyler Warren were so great as well. And a special mention from me to Neil Fairclough. Of course, he’s not Deaky, but I would be honored to be able to play bass guitar like he does. Also, Brian mentioned the roadies, the technicians, all the people we cannot actually see on stage, but who are crucial for the show to actually happen.
I’m repeating myself, but the show was amazing, stunning, incredible from start to end. Funny, emotional, enthusiastic, almost flawless.
I actually read an article from French press the following day about the concert. I thought it was absolutely inappropriate from the journalist to actually give the musicians such nasty feedback. ‘Brian May was not that great on the guitar and was too much acting during Love of my life, dueting with Freddie.’ EXCUSE ME???? Please, get on stage and show us how you play the guitar and how you sing at almost 75. Tell us how it feels to know you’ll never see your best friend again, but try to keep his memory alive for everyone who love him.
‘Roger Taylor seemed uninterested and sang I’m in love with my car too fast’. Excuse me, sunglasses doesn’t mean he doesn’t want to see us. It means his eyes are sensitive. Actually, when he was in front of the stage, we’ve been able to spot how beautiful they are, such an intense blue. Also, this is his song, so fuck off.
‘Adam Lambert was off key during the whole show’, yes, sure, please take a mic and show us how you sing.
‘Spike, here again, as if he’s a member of the band now’. Sorry, yes, Spike didn’t ever play with Freddie and John actually, he doesn’t know what he’s doing.
‘Drummer Tyler Warren is just there to show his torso the young ladies’…. Well, I’m quite speechless on this one…. Tyler was just amazing.
‘Neil Fairclough wasn’t necessary on stage, he just came closer for under pressure, but that’s all’. True, bass guitars are not necessary in Queen songs, John was useless. -Strong face slap-
I’m aware Queen + Adam Lambert isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, that the band Queen with Freddie and John isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. But I think being a journalist means being impartial, objective. And he clearly wasn’t. He deserves to rot in hell seriously, he got me so mad.
Anyways, at the end of the show, I think my hands carried on clapping until my muscles gave up lol all I could hear around us as we were asked to exit the arena, was people saying how much they enjoyed the show, how incredible it was.
We got back to the car and we headed back home, drained lol. In France, 14th of July is national day, so there were fireworks here and there, and even if I’m not a fan of fireworks, it was as if Paris was thanking Queen again for everything and this incredible show.
I didn’t write this all to make people drool or to get anyone jealous or anything. It’s my way to have all this archived somehow, a way to keep all this in memory, in addition to all the pics and videos we now have. And I wanted to share with you how Queen, again, makes me feel alive. It’s also a way to thank them all again for everything they do, every single day, for me.
And thank you if you read it all !!
Stay safe and take care !!! love you all 💖💜

Thanks for the tag @isolarrwilde !
What book are you currently reading?
The House of Dudley by Joanne Paul, a new biography of the Tudor family.
What do you usually wear?
These days, jeans and more often than not a striped tshirt/top.
What's your favourite movie you've seen in theatres this year?
I haven’t been to a cinema since Bohemian Rhapsody was out. I’m not particularly interested in films.
What's your star sign? Do you share your birthday with a celebrity or historical event?
Pisces, though only just as it begins on my birthday. In Chinese astrology I’m a snake. I share my birthday with (among others) eighteenth century actor David Garrick, Anthony Stewart Head and the late Dame Gillian Lynne. Edward VI was crowned on that day in 1547 and Tchaikovsky premiered Swan Lake in 1877.
Do you go by your full name or a nick-name?
I’ve never been known by a nickname though some people have shortened it, such as my grandparents and a couple of managers at work; they're the only people I've allowed to do that as I don’t really like it being shortened unless I decide to do it myself. I’m always called by my full name within my immediate family, though my mother does have a tendency to call my sister and I pretty much anything that comes into her head. The one that’s stuck over the years is ‘Pooh’, as in Winnie The, because it rhymes with the shortened version of my name.
How tall are you?
5'3”, to my eternal chagrin as almost everyone in the family is taller than me.
Are you in a relationship? If not, who is your crush if you have one?
Nope, and no one. I assume from the latter that we’re referring to real life rather than the realms of fantasy. To be honest I can’t really see myself as part of a couple; I’ve been on my own too long and I’m pretty solitary by nature.
Did you grow up to become what you wanted to be when you were a child?
To my lasting regret I’ve never had a goal in mind and still have no idea what I'm doing with my life.
If you draw/write/create in any way, what's your favourite picture/line/etc. from something you created this year?
I've written so much this year (just under 300K words - eek!) I doubt I could pick one line! As for art, I'm very fond of this Bush sketch from earlier in the year; for once I managed to get the expression and head tilt right:
Tumblr media
Dogs or cats?
In the past I would always have said dogs, but just lately I’ve found myself coming round to cats after previously having been quite anti. Dogs probably still win out, though.
What's something you're good at vs. something you're bad at?
I'm very good at judging distances, but I can't whistle to save my life.
What's something you'd like to create content for?
I don’t really think I would. I’ve been asked on the odd occasion if things of mine can be included in zines but I’ve never accepted.
What's something you're currently obsessed with?
My eighteenth century fixation is still going strong after more than thirty years, and my Hornblower phase mark II hasn’t come to an end yet.
What's something that you were excited about that turned out to be disappointing this year?
I haven't really had anything to get excited about for a long time. It was annoying that the Christmas event at Mottifont Abbey was so busy first thing on a Monday morning; that was disappointing, I suppose.
What's a hidden talent of yours?
It's not a talent as such but I have a great facility for remembering lines from comedy shows, though I wouldn't exactly call it hidden as I know I have an annoying tendency to quote them all the time. I actually can't think of anything I'd regard as a 'hidden talent'.
Are you religious?
For many years I would have immediately described myself as an atheist but as I get older I find myself less sure and am now agnostic. I’ve started to find the religious aspect of Christmas comforting, something that I think probably started during the pandemic, though I wouldn’t call myself a believer in any real sense.
What's something you wish to have at this moment?
Just at this minute, I would dearly love the tension headache that has been plaguing me for weeks to leave me alone. In the long term, a job, and preferably one I actually enjoy doing after spending far too long in a position I came to detest.

45 -
Warning: I got a lot to say (as usual).
I got married!! Again. Hehe, finally had our weekend we booked two years ago. It was absolutely stunning. But it was a lot. Can we normalize not wanting a big wedding or even a wedding at all? Can we normalize wedding anxiety? Can we normalize dreading big events?
Can everyone just understand that I had a difficult childhood so big intense emotions are terrifying for me and I usually use alcohol/drugs to tamp it down so I can still experience them, albeit distantly. Not excusing, just explaining.
Also - hello this shit is expensive! And we had a frugal wedding.
In the sense that, as a bride, I feel like I should be all sparkles in my eyes and over the moon and dancing on a rainbow - but really, it was my nightmare. My ADHD was in overdrive & the whole weekend felt like a blackout. Reading personal intimate vows in front of people? No thank you lol. Having all eyes on me? I’ll pass. Feeling immense pressure to have ONE perfect day? I’d rather crack.
But I did it anyway. I’m glad I did. And I did all the super emotionally intense parts, sober as a priest. Yay!
Some positives: I’m so lucky to have people who will travel just to celebrate with me. My mom made a speech…it was poetic & very sweet. She described me as “radiant, effervescent, and vivacious”. Like?????? :) I love a good vocabulary.
Umm my stepdad made a speech and he was a freaking VIBE. We haven’t always gotten along but he loves my mom fiercely & is so supportive of her. So I can’t really fault the guy, even if sometimes I’m just like *points to head* “wtf is going on up there?”. I also got some quality time with my extended family, whom I rarely see. They flew over two oceans and two continents just to be with me for this day! Like how amazing is that. :)
The whole night looked like something out of a fairytale with a bohemian theme and fairy lights. Turqoiuse waters & perfect white sand. It was dreamy and picturesque and beautiful.
On top of that, I have friends in all places - I’m not really a one group friend. So it’s a little unnerving to have everyone come together (Will they get along? Will there be drama? Will it be awkward? Will I be so focused on everyone else’s experience that I forget to enjoy my own? LOL but really)
But it was so so much better than I could have ever imagined. We all had a blast!
Speaking OF sobriety, yeah we broke that shit. I had my first alcoholic drink in almost 5 months. Now, those of the I bleed AA variety would freak out because yes, I relapsed. And omg haven’t I read the big book that says I can never ever ever have a drink again? What will Bill think? /s
But hear me out: I discussed my choice to drink with my therapist prior to actually doing it. I had a support system and a harm reduction plan in place. And, I’ve been doing a LOT of work in the last few months to identify, forgive, heal myself & limiting beliefs/negative thought patterns. Ya know, the ones that I used alcohol and drugs to cope with. I’m not anywhere close to where I’d like to be but I’m a hell of a lot farther away from who I used to be.
As my therapist put it: “It seems like this is a symbolic decision for you. Kind of like a “fuck you I am in charge of my life & I can make my own decisions and I don’t care what anyone else thinks”. She’s not wrong.
BUT BUT BUT here’s the best part! Yes I drank, however all it did was remind me of how shitty alcohol actually feels. I don’t miss the hangovers one bit. I enjoy feeling semi-stable in my emotional sense. I like feeling clear headed. Also drinking a lot makes you bloated and more susceptible to gaining extra weight. We want to be snatched always!!!!
I am going back to my life with no intention or desire to drink. No desperate wanting to escape. How freaking wild. Now what works for me may not work for anyone else - but again, sobriety & recovery are so unique to everyone. Everyone’s story starts from the same feelings, but recovery is not a one size fits all.
With all of that being said - I feel super good these days. Not in like a manic & overstimulated way, but a sort of quiet peace that comes with feeling like I am really loving myself for all that I have been, all that I am, and all that I will be.
I want to live my life & the idea of all the things I can do is exciting now. I no longer feel (constantly) like I’m drudging through the monotony of life. I know bad days will come. So will good days. Slowly but surely, I am creating new habits that take me further from my past and closer to the light of my future.
I came to the realization that who fucking cares? The world and the people in my life (though with the best of intentions) will tell me who they think I should be. Will tell me how to fit the mold. But I don’t care about fitting the mold anymore. I don’t want to apologize for having needs and existing. I have people who love all the little bits of me and have always loved them, despite my inner critic telling me I have to earn it.
I decide who I am.
I mean, there’s tons of awful fucking people in the world, who are still loved by someone. Like even Hitler had his main squeeze til the final breath. If that’s any consolation lol.
And just from a nerdy math perspective… statistically speaking, there are 8B+ people in the world. If 10 don’t like me or don’t get me, theres 10 more that do!
I trust my inner She to guide me to where I want to be and to attract the people that I need. These days I have faith.
Each day a little better and brighter.

An interview with Mattowarrior from Pathless Land!
We had the chance to ask Mattowarrior from Pathless Land a few questions about his latest release, "Bloodlines," which is an amazing example of creativity and sonic excellence. Keep reading to learn more!
- Congratulations on releasing “Bloodlines!” This work showcases a wide variety of sounds and influences. Can you tell us about the creative process behind the album and how you managed to blend different elements of old-school and modern heavy metal?
Well, I wanted to have one singer through all the songs, unlike the last one where I used two session singers and sang a bit myself, I wanted more continuity. I almost had a local singer join the project (as it’s currently me and session musicians on drums and vocals), and that was when one of the versions of The Dungeon Master (and the EP) were done. Things didn’t go anywhere with that singer around 2018/2019, so I decided to do a full-length album with the same two session musicians, and I almost was going to do a double album. I kind of took my time with the release, but that was not the original intention. There was a lot of upheaval in my life and a lot of changes that happened between the first notes getting recorded (which technically goes back to 2017(!)) and the release. I wasn’t sure the direction I was going to go in as far as stuff like will this be a double album, what songs do I want on the album, etc. I didn’t mean for it to take as long as it did, but obviously, there was a lot that happened between 2017/2018 and now in the world as well. I decided to buckle down in 2022 and attempt to get it done; even being as perfectionist as I am, sometimes that stifles me. The process now is going to be doing a new EP for late this year or early next year and then getting a live band together. Another thing that happened to me while recording this album is that I joined another band (a cover band), so I’m having to sort out how things are going to go since I have even more projects non-music related, and juggling all of that with the various music projects I’m doing as well.
- The album art, song titles, and lyrics of "Bloodlines" are heavily influenced by fantasy themes and games like Dungeons and Dragons. How did this connection come about, and how did it impact the overall concept and direction of the album?
Well, I grew up being interested in Tabletop RPGs and fantasy in general. The album cover is almost meant as a parody, though since it’s based on a picture from the infamous “Bohemian Grove” wherein I changed the entity being “worshipped” from “Moloch” to a dragon. The Dungeon Master was meant as a (slightly) tongue-in-cheek take on the RPG group I was in at the time I wrote it.
Since I was really influenced by the bands I have been in, I like to have a positive message. At the time the embryonic ideas for Pathless were being formed, music in the mainstream was cynical and angst-ridden. I think Pathless sometimes explores that side as well, but as an escape, it was great to hear bands talking about self-empowerment or storming the castle, fighting the dragon, and overcoming obstacles. it inspired me at a very formative time, and I like to carry on that tradition. Don’t forget that during many of my formative years, music in the mainstream was all about how depressed you were after your heroin binge. I have darker songs (in fact, the next release will have more horror-themed lyrics as well, something I’ve not tried much before) but almost feel a need to balance them out with more affirmative messages in songs like “Believe Again”, which came from that Stratovarius/Helloween/early Nocturnal Rites school of positive life affirming Metal songs, or “The Winner’s Edge”.
Tumblr media
- “Bloodlines" features 12 songs, and there is so much going on in terms of sounds, from clean melodies to roaring drops and energetic vocals. Can you share some insights into how you balance these different elements to create a cohesive listening experience for your audience?
It’s very difficult to put into a category with Pathless Land. The project name itself is based on a quote from Krishnamurti: “The search for truth is like a Pathless Land.” I wrote an instrumental years ago called “Journey to the Pathless Land”, years ago, which became the basis of the project name. Inherent in the name “Pathless Land” is the idea of an openness to experiment and go into many directions as far as the music goes. I guess I can boil it down to elements: Majestic, Darkly Atmospheric, Spacey, Mournful, and so on. I see Pathless as being based on Power/Traditional Metal, though maybe a bit of Progressive Metal as well though simulataneously I don’t want to be stuck in a genre or subgenre. That said, you wouldn’t see me writing a punk song or purely industrial song in Pathless, though those are still two genres I like. I am hoping it becomes more cohesive as time goes on; on this release, I utilized only one vocalist, which helps and I didn’t do in the past (except for when I was the main vocalist). One thing I try to shoot for is to have atmosphere in most of the songs, that is, have keyboards in most of the tracks, and I have a very distinct vision of what that sounds like.
- What sets Pathless Land apart from other heavy metal bands, and how do you maintain your unique approach to the genre?
I think I was born and raised at a unique time and got into different styles of Metal at times when there was a dearth of interest in the genre, and I like to bring elements from all those times together. In the late nineties, living in a college town where most people have an antipathy toward metal (though way more so in the past) catalyzed something within me to go in this direction. I identify a lot with the mid-late nineties German Power Metal scene with bands like Blind Guardian, Helloween, Gamma Ray, Running Wild, Rage, Grave Digger, etc, but also I got into a lot of Black Metal, Prog Metal, and Death Metal bands during that time frame so that influenced a lot of what I do. I got into Metal because of British Metal bands like Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, though it was at a time when their fortunes were declining in the US (early nineties). Yet I’m also obsessed with stuff like classic early Pink Floyd or Sisters of Mercy, even bands like Skinny Puppy, etc.; I like a lot of stuff, Classical, Fusion, etc; I want to make music that’s epic but not pretentiously empty and lacking riffs like some Metal bands today (I won’t name names lol).  I also don’t like a lot of the production choices with today’s Metal bands. I almost like this “New Wave Of Traditional Heavy Metal” more than some of the newer Power Metal bands. Hell, I can listen to a Tame Impala album more all the way through than some of the more boring Power Metal band albums nowadays. Beast In Black and a few others are notable exceptions.
- Could you discuss any specific track from "Bloodlines" that holds a special significance to the band or has an interesting story behind their creation?
I find At Saturn’s Gate to have an interesting story behind it since much of the song goes back nearly 30 years! I wrote a lot of the riffs in 1994 and used to play a lot of the riffs with both one of my best friends in high school and my brother both on drums (RIP). The fact that these riffs made it to the album to me is fascinating, just as a testament to the fact that I would remember and hold on to riffs that are literally ancient (lol)! The fact that I wrote a thrashy power metal song, this was a challenge to get to write since it’s not something I’ve normally done. The lyrics were based on Clark Ashton Smith and then the second half, well, I’ll leave that up to your imagination.
The other song I’d say that has an interesting story is Time Will Tell (If Our Love Is Gonna Last). I wrote a series of riffs in 2015 that I called “sounds 80s” and it got a bit of attention on YouTube since it was done with this vintage piece of recording Equipment, a Scholz Rockman. I then started dating this woman in 2019 and I was listening to the song and then in relation to the relationship we had, I just spontaneously started singing/writing the chorus. I recorded it on my DAW, and then we broke up; I wrote the rest of the lyrics and the rest of the song that was based on the relationship I had just been in. I found it funny that I started the song dating her and thinking a loud in the chorus about what would happen, and then we broke up, and I finished the song! (though I want to remix that and some of the other songs one day!)
- How do you see the future of heavy metal evolving, and how do you plan to adapt your sound to stay relevant in the genre?
I’d like to get better at theory and composition, and not only that, I want to fully immerse myself in being a better music engineer. I outsourced a few of the songs as far as mixing and mastering but next time want to do most of it myself. I’m honestly not as satisfied as I could be with much of the production of the album, though I adore the songs. I also want to become a better singer, obviously and a better player. As for the direction, I have a lot of ideas, I have some heavier ideas for the future direction, Black/Death influenced though of course, some more retro or AOR style songs slated too. One thing though I can guarantee is that the future is going to be more progressive and technical on at least some of the tracks, or more of a proportion of the tracks than previously. There will be songs that are more extreme, more straightforward Power Metal, and even maybe in a limited way even some groove metal influences in there too, at least like the earlier Phil era Pantera (Cowboys) or Exhorder. I wrote a few riffs that were influenced by that, I don’t of course, want to play that style exclusively.
I think the future Pathless material will have styles more pronounced if that makes any sense. It would bore me to death to write all the songs sounding the same or in the same style in all honesty, even if Progressive Power Metal/Trad Metal is the foundation.
Another thing of course is a live band. I’ve had visions of what a live show looks like, and I want to make it happen. Is it impossible in an Indie Music (a lot of which I also like now, at least the edgier stuff) loving college town in the Midwest? We’ll see.
As for the future of Metal itself, well, I am old enough to have seen when Metal made you feared by much of the populace and seen as rebellious, but I also remember when it made you laughed at and seen as antiquated and out of style. I don’t want the latter to come back, but maybe more of the former. It seems like there’s a lot of groupthink among the Metal crowd nowadays. I don’t mean politically per se, I just mean it just doesn’t seem to challenge the status quo as much as it did in the past.
It used to be a genre that got your grandmother to tell your mother to get you to see a guidance counselor, or your average fan had just done a stint in juvenile detention, now it’s something that a slightly nerdier than average kid will go see the show of after watching a Marvel movie. It’s become safe and mainstream in a way that trickles down to the overly stale quantized production, autotuned, triggered drums style that can work at times but makes a lot of albums sound blasé to me. As for the attitude and culture, going back to that, I don’t mean something necessarily like Varg Vikernes or Jon Schaefer of Iced Earth (involved in Jan 6) as being the culmination of “rebellion” in Metal, but I wouldn’t mind something like Ice T when he got called out by the President in the early nineties for the lyrical content of Body Count. WASP’s Blackie Lawless scaring parents, just stuff like that I miss some of the time. The pendulum swung where Metal wasn’t accepted to being too accepted, at least there’s too many people in Metal who want to say the same thing, which is to say, not really saying anything at all. They seem to just want push the status quo/current thing whatever it is that comes up. I want more diversity of thought, diversity in production, and more rebellion, though I don’t know what that would look like as far as the coherence of that statement goes.
Metal, unfortunately, and Rock in general, is where Jazz was by the late seventies and eighties; its time has passed in many ways. There’s not much else to go or do as far as Metal without it sounding like a gimmicky novelty, like Polka Death Metal or something. It’s become a legacy genre in many ways. But I’m fine with that, even if in the past I wasn’t. That’s why I respect someone like Ghost; they’re kind of mainstream and a lot of “normies” who would never buy a Mercyful Fate or even a more obscure Blue Oyster Cult record like them, but that’s fine. They are shocking to some, not as many as if they had been around a long time ago, but the theatricality and the lack of apology for doing what they do, I have a lot of respect for them. They’re not like a certain San Francisco Metal band who got out of Metal when it was fashionable to do so, then got back into Metal when it was fashionable to do so. They just are who they are (Ghost) and I have a love for that.

Alex Recommends: March Books
I have had a very busy month, as I battle with assignments, work experience and my freelance work. I think I am managing to keep on top of everything though. You know when you have so many things to do that sometimes you just end up doing none of them? I’ve definitely been feeling that lately! It’s just a case of trying not to succumb to entire days of scrolling just to numb my mind for a bit. It’s tough sometimes, as I’m sure you’ll get too!
I have managed to spend time with Mark and my family though. We went to the Hard Rock Cafe Hotel in Marble Arch for Dad’s birthday celebrations and if you’ve never been, I thoroughly recommend it if you’re ever in London. As in most Hard Rock Cafes, there is plenty of memorabilia all over the walls but the Hotel has something pretty special -the piano that Freddie Mercury learned to play on! Apparently it was featured in the Bohemian Rhapsody film too? It was pretty damn cool to see it in real life. The food was also brought to us by a very cute kitty robot! Seriously, it was amazing!
The Women’s Prize for Fiction longlist was announced at the beginning of March and therefore, this month’s recommendations post is made up entirely from that. I’ve been trying to read as many as I can before the shortlist is announced and I have really enjoyed the majority of what I’ve read from it so far. It’s a pretty strange, unexpected longlist and I know that some people are disappointed to see some books missed from it. Although there does seem to be a strong political theme running through most of the longlist, there is a bit of a mix in terms of genre. So I think there probably is something on there that you’ll like! Here are five of those books that I’ve read so far and loved -hopefully you will too.
-Love, Alex x
FICTION: The Bandit Queens by Parini Shroff.
Tumblr media
Geeta’s husband disappeared years ago and everyone in the village thinks she had something to do with it. She didn’t but she doesn’t mind them thinking she’s capable of that. Then one day, Farah, a woman in Geeta’s small-loan group, comes seeking help for making her own husband disappear. She’s inspired by the real life Bandit Queen Phoolan Devi, who took revenge on her own abusers before becoming an activist, Geeta knows that those who do wrong should be punished but what can she really get away with? Ultimately, The Bandit Queens is a novel populated with some fantastically clever and loveable female characters and their escape from the abusive pasts. It’s definitely about their empowerment and their courage and I loved that this book will introduce many people to Phoolan Devi and what she achieved. It’s also blessed with an awesome sense of humour and sisterhood that will tackles some of the darkest of topics but will somehow leave you smiling.
LITERARY FICTION: Pod by Laline Paull.
Tumblr media
Ea is a dolphin who has just come of age and is now expected to join in with her pod’s beautiful rituals. But Ea can’t hear and this means that she will never be able to master the art of spinning. So, she leaves the pod and discovers that the rest of her world is plagued with dangers -from predators to strange objects to mass disappearances of fish. Can a deaf dolphin possibly survive the ever-changing, increasingly threatening ocean? This wonderfully written book is strange but somehow enchanting. In parts, it’s horrific and heartbreaking but in other parts, it manages to be almost calming. Pod offers a unique look at what dolphins go through both at the hands of humans and in their own power struggles amongst pods. I’m sure that I will never read another book like it!
HISTORICAL FICTION: The Marriage Portrait by Maggie O’Farrell.
Tumblr media
Lucrezia is content with her place as the artistic, inquisitive third daughter of the Grand Duke of Florence. But at just 13 years old, her older sister dies on the eve of her wedding to Alfonso, the ruler of a distant kingdom and suddenly Lucrezia will be taking her sister’s place as his bride. Leaving her home and family behind, Lucrezia will now live in an unfamiliar, sometimes hostile court but its her new husband that baffles her the most. Is he the happy, gentle soul he first appeared to be or is he a cold-hearted leader which the signs seem to suggest he is? As she sits for a portrait that will be hung on the walls of history forever, Lucrezia knows that she has one job in this new court -provide an heir to secure its future and who knows what could happen if she fails? I fell head over heels in love with O’Farrell’s masterpiece that was Hamnet a few years ago and The Marraige Portrait definitely shares that similar immersive reading experience. The settings are beautifully painted and O’Farrell does a great job in her studies of female relationships at multiple points -Lucrezia and her sisters, Lucrezia and her maid, Lucrezia and Alfonso’s sisters, Alfonso’s sisters themselves. Lucrezia de Medici was a real historical figure, so the book is clearly very well researched. I’m not sure how much O’Farrell invented and how much is true but it makes for an infuriating read where hope just manages to cling on to the final page.
MYSTERY: Cursed Bread by Sophie Mackintosh.
Tumblr media
In the small town of Pont-Saint-Esprit, Elodie is the baker’s wife. She lives a simple life but she longs for more. When a new couple move into the area, a brash ambassador and his wife Violet, Elodie takes an interest in both of them. A plague is about to sweep through the town and some think it has been caused by the bread. But Elodie is about to discover that a real predator’s identity isn’t always the obvious choice. I wasn’t really sure whether to label this book as a mystery because although it is set amidst a real mystery that occurred in 1950s France, it’s not really the focus of this short novel. However, I’m not really sure how else to categorise it. Ultimately, Cursed Bread is an atmospheric, immersive read that explores an intense, female frenemy situation. It’s dark, hazy and quite dream-like with a strong sense of foreboding and doom throughout. I didn’t anticipate the sharp turn that it took at the end and it made for a very interesting, fast read that caused me to wonder what it was really all about!
HORROR: Children of Paradise by Camilla Grudova.
Tumblr media
When Holly gets a job at the very old, well-known Paradise cinema, her colleagues don’t pay her much attention and she spends her days performing routine duties and avoiding the cinema’s owner Iris, an old lady with particular tastes and habits. Holly wants her colleagues to like her and on gaining their acceptance, she realises that like them, she too has become part of the cinema’s furniture. She learns its secrets and history and when violence and change come knocking, it’s not surprising that the group begins to unravel. Children of Paradise is not an obvious horror novel but I’d argue that it does subtly fit many criteria for the genre. Bodily fluids, check. Violent death, check. Unsettling undertones, check. The book is a love letter to old cinema and if you’ve seen the films that make up the chapter titles, you will notice parallels between the plots and the events of each chapter. Therefore, it is one for film buffs. Holly offers an intense narrative voice that I found utterly intriguing and I loved the eclectic cast of characters and the slow burn, strange ride that it was.

What are three things that were in style when you were in high school?
I’ve never paid much attention to fashion, but one thing I clearly remember was that all the girls were wearing skinny jeans and high boots.
What is one random fact about you?
There’s a photo of me sitting on a pantograph of a tram. It’s somewhere in my workmate’s phone.
Do you spend a lot of time outdoors in the summer?
Not only in summer. Also in winter.
What is your favorite summer month?
June, because the longest days.
What do you want to be for Halloween this year?
I don’t celebrate Halloween.
When do you plan to start decorating for fall?
I personally don’t see the point of cluttering the house for seasons other than Christmas and maybe Easter.
Every September, do you always wish you were going back to school?
In normal circumstances, this is when I come back to uni.
What was your favorite class in high school?
Anything to do with physics, biology, chemistry and computers.
Do you have a desk in your room? If so, do you use it as a desk that you sit and work at?
No, there’s no space for a desk.
Do you have a hope chest? If so, what do you keep in it?
No, never did.
What’s one goal that you have for yourself this year?
To improve my hand further.
Do you use a backpack?
I do, for work, uni and all travels.
What did your favorite backpack in high school look like?
I had a bag because it’s been my goth years.
Have you ever shopped at Limited Too? If yes, what was your favorite thing you owned from there?
Never heard of it.
Do you wear band tees? if yes, which one is your favorite?
Yeah, I have three Vildhjarta tees and my favourite is the one with wolves.
What color is your desk in your room, if you have one?
I don’t have a desk.
Would you ever want to live in a home with all-white walls and furniture?
Yes, but with some colourful accents here and there.
Do you have pajama days often?
No, almost never.
What was the last flavor of tea you drank?
I don’t drink tea.
What was the last thing you ordered from Starbucks?
Probably hot chocolate.
Do you have a favorite barista at Starbucks?
No, I order online.
What is one thing you’re behind on?
Physical mobility.
Do you ever re-arrange your room?
Never.I hate moving the furniture, and I’m physically disabled anyway.
Do you share a room with anyone?
I share a bedroom with my husband.
Who was your first roommate?
No one, I guess. My sister had her own room.
Do you ever talk to your first roommate?
N/A.
What season do you want to get married in?
I’m married already, it was March.
Do you own a teepee?
What is teepee?
Frosting: chocolate or vanilla?
Vanilla, but I don’t like frosting.
Ice cream: chocolate or vanilla?
Chocolate for once, even though I don’t like chocolate that much.
Milkshake: chocolate or vanilla?
Strawberry, checkmate.
Do you drink protein shakes?
No, their taste is awful.
What was the last type of candy you ate?
I on’t remember, I’m not much of a candy guy.
Do you take birth control pills?
I don’t see any reason why a person who is a biological male would take them, unless for ruining their hormonal system or transitioning into female.
What was the last craft project you completed?
I usually don’t do crafts, unless photography counts.
Which is better: starting things or finishing them?
Finishing. Very satisfying.
Is your style bohemian at all?
No, I don’t see myself like that.
What is the highest name-brand thing you own?
I think Calvin Klein.
Have you ever sold on Poshmark?
No, I’m not even sure if it operates here. But I’ve sold on 2dehands.be and it even worked.
Do you have a Poshmark account?
No, I don’t.
What color GameBoy did you have as a kid?
I didn’t have any.
What was your favorite GameBoy game?
None.
What was your favorite Backstreet Boys song?
What, I’ve never listened to them. I’m a dude, after all.
Did you ever wonder what it felt like to get slimed?
I don’t even know what that means.
Did you ever name a pet after an imaginary friend?
Never had an imaginary friends.
Have you ever hallucinated?
Guess so.
Do you believe in angels and demons?
Not really.
What is holding you back from living your dreams?
Health problems.
Do you have a paypal account?
I do. It’s handy when my bank card doesn’t work (it does only on Belgian websites).
Do you like your hair better curly or straight?
I like it short, that’s it. The rest doesn’t matter.

Ann Walter
This week was most definitely a wake-up call into the possibly harsh yet enterprising world of real business. I’ve always been someone that has found the tasks of school and work to come relatively easy. I like learning and exploring, creating something with my hands or mind, or even the sense of commonality of working with a team. In internships prior to coming to New York, I’ve never really had any doubts as to my ability to carry out well the practicalities of life. But at the same time, even into this beginning of my adulthood, I’ve always maintained a certain level of whimsicality and bohemian inclinations. To me, the real world of the fashion industry, especially in New York, with all its manufacturing and events and glamor, has been a curious machine.
Tumblr media
Ann Walter visited our class to give some insight into the sort of stipulations of the world opened to us by this degree. We discussed resumes and job searches and the importance of connections. I had never known that so little of the acquisition of jobs was done in conventional ways--most were through word of mouth. Knowing this will definitely push me to come out of my shell and become more assertive and sociable. In the past I’ve had a general disdain towards the idea of networking largely because it just seems inauthentic, a reduction of the real self. However, especially after the talk, I think I need to let go of this pride and be more proactive in making connections that are both real and mutually beneficial. I’m starting to do it now and beginning to see that it’s still possible to make authentic connections with all sorts of people, even if you do share some sort of working relationship! It’s actually quite nice
Another thing I learned from this lecture was that I need to cut down my resume into a series of streamlined points rather than a laundry list of big words. Even though I’ve had some relevant internship and working experiences, it’s not like I have enough to warrant the word count mine has!
Tumblr media
I think the last and maybe most important thing I learned from Ann’s lecture was that the adult phase of life unravels slowly and methodically. Almost everyone we’ve talked to throughout this entire experience has played the long game--years here, years there, pivots planned and calculated far in advance. The story is not over after graduation, it is just beginning! If I’m being completely honest, I’m not quite sure if I’m ready to give up the passions of my youth and the dreaminess I feel now, mainly because now is the time it is most available to me. Now is the time where anything really feels possible. I’m hesitant to buy into this world because it seems fake and at times bound to implode. The world is changing in ways that are unfathomable to me and sometimes I legitimately wonder what essence the fashion industry has beyond just consumption. We don’t need one more piece of clothing to be produced ever again, it sits in dirty piles on faraway beaches, the earth might be dying and the psychological landscape of modern life feels so charged. I still have hope in a beautiful world, and still think somehow it will prevail, but I just wonder at times where in that is ‘fashion’ really going to matter? But at the same time, I know I’m just an individual, one with my own desires for comfort and exploration. I’m beginning to see the value in a life and path that you can create for yourself. Regardless of what mine is, how traditional or unorthodox, I trust that it shall unfold like the molting of a snake. I trust that time will allow me to move in the right direction and not confine me. I am so thankful to be able to alive and to experience this place. It’s up to me to take all the opportunities I can receive and to make the most of them.

Above is a little juvenilia—if something I wrote at age 26 counts as juvenilia—for this Bloomsday. (Everybody goes on and on about Bloomsday, but a full half of the novel, starting with “Circe,” takes place after midnight, which is to say on the 17th.) Anyway, I’ve written what I hope is at this late date in my life a mature essay on Ulysses over at the main site after having completed a marathon re-read over the past two weeks. Here is the first paragraph, which follows a brief prelude:
Ulysses has long been hailed as the greatest novel—or even the greatest literary work tout court—of the 20th century, and for three reasons. First, it almost exhaustively characterizes three of the most memorable (and two of the most lovable) protagonists in all of fiction. Second, it is an encyclopedia of fictional techniques ancient and avant-garde, literally containing within its pages every English prose style. Third—this is the most contentious point—it espouses social and political values the literati still tend to hold, much more unanimously and securely than in the moment when Joyce was composing his modern epic. The first and third points are related to one another, because the lovable characters espouse the moral vision; the second and third points are related to one another, because the heterogenous prose evokes the cosmopolitanism at the heart of Joyce’s politics; but I have never fully been able to reconcile—and am less able the more I read the book to reconcile—all three points together. That will be the burden of this essay.
More informally, I can’t help but conclude that Joyce got lucky with the book’s first 100 pages, perhaps the most perfect pages of fictional prose ever written, pages of bittersweet comic pathos in which we can’t help but fall in love with Stephen and Bloom and their city; and having fallen in love, we are willing to put up with the tediously impersonal trials of so much of the rest of the book and worship it for 100 years, even if among its difficulties, we all have our beloved moments. (I love the Shakespeare episode, for example, and I don’t actually think “Eumaeus” is as boring as its reputation suggests; “Circe,” with the exception of its extraordinary high points—“Nothung!”—is the book’s real bore, about 100 pages too long for “tell a dream, lose a reader” reasons.)
Mine is a bad reading, I’m sure, a philistine reading, but better that than my grad-student’s attempt above, written as the capstone to a seminar on modernism, to try to square the circle of all the contradictory things Joyce wanted to do, his seeming simultaneous ambition to be Tolstoy and Gertrude Stein at the same time, to be the Picassos of all periods in one picture.
My grad-school essay is obviously awful; the novel does not really, except in some meaninglessly general sense, represent its setting as “torn apart by capitalism,” for one thing; I was just (mis)reading the book through an ideological fog of Lukács, Jameson, Eagleton, and Moretti (and only the first of this red quartet need ever be read at all). But the overall point—that Ulysses is a liberal novel in the tradition of the liberal novel—still stands. And the essay was praised by the professor, who went on to advise my dissertation, as itself “reading like a novel,” a slightly backhanded compliment in academic precincts, but I’ll take it; I always aim to generate suspense in writing argumentative nonfiction; and making the reader wonder, “What’s this freak going to say next?” counts too.
Browsing in a volume of Pound and Joyce’s correspondence, I found a Poundian exclamation that would have made a good epigraph for my seminar paper, and here I’ll conclude:
NO; Joyce was not a painter not a bohemian, a small bourgeois, to the UTMOST.
