I wasn’t much of an optimist before. Really, I was just in the background of some rather sleazy drama flic that was beyond human comprehension or believability. And realistically, I preferred being the side character or extra. Helped me blend in and just be another face no one would ever think about again.
And that was a helpful trait with keeping “updated” on your life. Before work, you would go to the coffee shop down the street. Talk to the waitress, someone you must know from the daily schedule you’ve made before walking back and taking over for one of your coworkers. From there, on breaks, you just take a small walk two blocks and visit a comic book store whilst the old lady who owns the store covers for you.
From what I could tell, you preferred DC over Marvel. But just a quick Instagram search and I’m available to all the little bits about you. A music enthusiast, a comic geek, and a movie critic. None of the posts have a caption to capture what you were feeling when uploading them. But I can quickly tell that most kids in East Highland don’t have the same likings as you. Comments on these posts come from followers that do though, and they must be enough for you to say ‘fuck you’ to the rest of the world and post what you want.
And I know we have a date at 8 PM, but I just needed to see you. Can you blame me though? It’s important that I learn these things so we can talk and naturally get to know one another. This is fine. I’m taking things slower than I had in the past. I want this to be special compared to what it was like with Fez. You are special. You are different. And you are beautifully sweet with Maddy-
Wait. What the fuck?
What the hell is she doing at your work?
I know for damn sure that she is heavy into music like you or I, so why is she here, Y/n? From what I can see, you don’t seem all too impressed with her being our space as well. Brows furrowed and eyes narrowed in a glare as she spoke sweet nothings. It was despicable honestly. If I didn’t know any better, I would think that she’s just being friendly. But I know my friend and I know that in the time of her dating your brother, you two got to know one another. Now, on and off you two would talk, but she never went out of her way to show up at your work. So, what’s the change of heart?
Maddy moved around the counter, lips twisted in a smile that rivalled your unimpressed deadpan that looked incredibly attractive. “C’mon, Y/n. How long have we been at this?” Maddy inquired, stopping when she stood by your side. “We can just sneak into the office. Get a quick fuck in.” She closed the space, lips pressing to the edge of your jaw. “You are so much bigger than your brother.”
Listen, I have no problems with Maddy. Did she pull some stupid shit sometimes? Abso-fucking-lutely. Has she had a rough go when it came to your brother? Yes. But she is delusional. The whole argument she had with your brother in the hot tub is a testament to that and I think you know that as well.
So, what the fuck is her play here?”
“Maddy, it’s not a good idea,” you protested. “I’m not afraid to say that I am scared of Nate. I know what he’s done to you and Jules. Have you ever thought of what he might do to me if he found out we’ve been fucking?”
A groan fell from the girl’s lips. “He’s not going to find out, Y/n. I have no reason to tell him shit,” Maddy sighed, lips twisting in a grin. “C’mon. It’ll be fun. I’ll let you be rough.” With her hands finding yours, she began to pull and guide you, and you allowed it.
God, seeing her this dick whipped over you was insulting. Well, maybe not for you but you aren’t a guy to just throw yourself around. You were quiet, reserved, charismatic, and goddamn adorable when you didn’t mean to be.
This isn’t you. You aren’t the type to just give up on your job just to go get laid. This didn’t make any fucking sense. And even if I move down the sidewalk and try to get a better angle, I can’t see jackshit inside that office. Not to mention the sun glare coming right back at me.
I’m too exposed out here. If I can’t see you, that means I don’t know if you’ve noticed me or not. But this just means I have reasoning for Maddy’s clinginess to you. A manipulative, selfish, stupid bitch. I won’t let her do this to us. I won’t let her get between us right when I finally enter your life. I just have to figure out what I am going to do next, and I don’t yet have the faintest clue as to what that may be.
But what I do know is that this sharing shit isn’t going to work. If it be with someone more competent and maybe shared the same love I have for you, then this would be different. Because maybe I could love someone just as much as I love you. Except, this is reality and I won’t be doing any 60/40 bullshit. You are meant for me. We are meant for one another and Maddy is forcing herself into the perfect frame we are making together.
And somehow, I’m going to need to get her the fuck out of it.

This might be old-fashioned of me but I miss when comic books were less about shitty character growth the characters don’t need from writers who don’t really get those characters and more about just those characters going on silly adventures.
I recently been reading the original JLI comic run and how the fuck is a comic run from the 80s better than all the comics dc released this year together? (In my opinion) it just baffles me how, idk, somehow the love for writing these stories got lost along the way. I read the jli run and writer and editors notes and clearly there was some level of thought put out in this, despite it being just silly almost episodic stories most of the time. There’s isn’t really anything like that now-a-days, these stories feel like they’re being put out just for the sake of it.
I guess the point I’m trying to make here is that i wish Kon (and half of Superfam honestly) just had writers that genuinely love him, or at least put some level of thought into the comics they’re writing, comics now a days just feel so soulless, it’s such a pity :/
<🦎>
first off i LOVE the lizard signoff. that's iconic of you
but yeah no i'm in full agreement. generally i try to keep an open mind towards newer comics (some of them ARE fun! just... pretty much only the ones introducing new characters.) because i do think nostalgia glasses are a factor in how much we all praise postcrisis era. like some of that shit was dumb as hell too (war of the supermen i'm looking at you). so i try to keep in mind that we mostly care about the new earth comics that were good and ignore the bad ones, but all the same...
the number of writers that seem to actually care about the story they're telling lately does seem... low. they all seem so soulless and safe. you just know no modern comic would have cassie join a fucking resurrection cult or have tim doing a boogie in the cloning basement. everything is neat and packaged in little boxes so it can be easily sliced up for people to post on twitter or tiktok, with pithy one-liners and tired, rehashed tropes to sell the deal no matter how out-of-character they may be. everything is resolved nice and neat and clean and there's no character development needed. if a character has a flaw, it'll be hammered in as heavily as possible so you KNOW the author knows it's a character flaw they need to overcome.
so yeah. it's by and large just so ... flat.
i think the only comics dc is putting out that are really worth keeping up with to me at this point are like. new characters. spirit world, city boy, that sort of thing. with existing characters they're kinda just getting mangled.

1. Sincerity It matters what you do when you don’t think she’s looking. She can tell whether or not your heart is in the right place.
TWO DAYS LATER…
Heeseung was tired. It was 6 am. He had only just gotten home. His body ached from the particularly strenuous night, and yet all he could think about was 1. having to go to class again in a matter of hours and 2. the fact that someone was knocking on his door at the crack of dawn. “Be there in a second,” Heeseung groaned, peeling his suit off before quickly pulling on his pajamas.
Heeseung winced a little seeing Y/n standing at his door from the peephole. He was in no mood to be reprimanded, let alone interrogated. The whole ‘pretend you’re having sex’ cover was Jake’s idea, of course—and it was not working. It just gave his prickly neighbor a reason to be mad at (and potentially suspicious of) him.
Seriously, he had stamina, but not that damn much.
Which is why he needed a new cover as soon as possible. And why he needed to open the door right that second.
“I know, I know, no sex, no fun, whatever,” he puffed as the door swung open.
Y/n smiled, shifting her weight from one foot to the other. “Oh, it’s alright, I slept fine,”
He could tell she hadn’t slept a wink. The circles under her eyes were the biggest giveaway. Nevertheless, she was fully dressed, woolen hat in her hand. Why was she lying?
She wanted something.
Heeseung had two options: turn her away and get some sleep, risking being reported (as she threatened every night but never seemed to do), or help her. He chose the latter. His brain would hate him for it later.
“Okay…so what do you want? Why are you knocking at this hour?” He asked, rubbing his shoulder.
Y/n met his gaze. Heeseung could tell from her hesitance that he was the last person she wanted to talk to right now. But alas, here she was.
“Do you happen to have a printer in your apartment?”
Heeseung heaved a sigh of relief upon realizing that the task didn’t require leaving his apartment or donating a pint of his blood (it’s happened before!) “Yeah, I do,”
“Do you mind if I use it real quick?” Y/n scooted straight past him, “The print center doesn’t open for an hour and I need to get this draft to the Scoop before then,” she explained, looking around the room cautiously. Honestly, for a woman who thought her neighbor was a sex addict, Heeseung didn’t blame her for expecting his place to be something of a sex dungeon.
“Sure,” he closed the door behind her, “just send me the file on my school email,”
“Thanks. I already did,” Heeseung tilted his head in amusement at her confidence, “I was really counting on you letting me use your printer, I knew you had one. Figured you owed me a night of your sleep,” Y/n grinned as she walked around the room.
“Well, I can’t argue with that,” he replied, opening his laptop as he stood by his desk, “I’m sorry, it’s just that we usually can’t meet at her place.”
Y/n froze in place, turning her head toward the man with a smirk on her face. “Hold on…‘her’ singular?”
“Yup, my girlfriend,” Heeseung looked up briefly to confirm before looking back to his computer, “she lives with her dad, so that makes it kind of hard to spend time at her place,”
Heeseung’s jaw tensed up. He didn’t like bending the truth, but it came with the job.
“Ooh, exciting! What’s her name?” Y/n inquired, scurrying over to Heeseung as he received the printout.
“None of your business, hon’” Heeseung sneered, placing the freshly printed article against her chest. “Anyways, debt repaid. Take it,”
Y/n groaned, “you’re no fun. It’s like our late-night exchanges mean nothing to you,”
“Yeah, yeah,” Heeseung sighed sarcastically, “I appreciate it so much when you look for an excuse to talk to me every night!”
Y/n blinked repeatedly in surprise. Fuck. Heeseung messed up. Was she offended?
To his relief, Y/n just scoffed as she walked past him. “Well, thanks anyways,”
“Anytime,” Heeseung replied as he turned around, “...but not really. Don’t come again unless I owe you another favor,”
“I don’t plan on it. See you in class. And please, don’t leave right at the beginning again, or else we’ll have to hear the ‘importance of attendance’ speech for the second time in the week,”
It took every shred of Heeseung’s willpower to not make a smart remark about how Y/n wanted to see him again, but he resisted. It would have been overcompensating.
Tumblr media
Y/n was thrilled to hear about this new development in the Lee Heeseung saga—he had a girlfriend! This meant he had sex with the same girl for hours every night and this mystery girlfriend managed to arrive and leave without being seen by the neighbors. Impressive! She couldn’t wait to tell Somi. So, she didn’t.
“He has a girlfriend?!” Somi exclaimed, sipping her morning coffee, “That’s insane!”
The two of them met at the coffee shop outside Y/n’s building before class whenever they woke up early enough. Honestly, it wasn’t a common occurrence.
“Well, it’s not that insane, considering that the moans sound pretty similar every night,” Y/n reasoned, taking a bite of her bagel, “I guess I thought he had a super specific type? Now that I say it out loud, I’m surprised the girlfriend thing didn’t cross my mind earlier,”
Somi shrugged, “nope. The man seems like a fuckboy. I don’t blame you for jumping to conclusions. It’s not like you spread rumors about him,”
“True, I’m innocent,” Y/n let out an awkward laugh.
“So,” Somi rubbed her hands together in anticipation before picking up the small packet on the table, “how’s your advice piece going?”
“I came up with an idea!” Y/n beamed with pride, “I’m gonna write about five ways to win a woman’s heart. Or ‘get the girl’. They both sound a little misogynistic, but I’ll make it work,”
Somi waited a moment before replying, “...is that all you’ve got? A number?”
“Well, I have one idea that I wrote about for the first draft that I submitted today,” Y/n explained, “I tried to make it as universal as I could,”
“Go on, read it,”
“Sincerity,” she summarized the page she had typed, “none of the following tips matter unless you’re sincere. Women can tell if you’re just trying to do something to get in their pants—it’s imperative that you do these things because you care,”
“Well, it’s certainly true,” Somi nodded, “wording needs some adjustment, but good work,”
“My essay is already kicking my ass, having you in the mix will not help,” Y/n threw a playful punch at her friend’s shoulder. “Now tell me about the real article here. Got any new stuff on Nightwing?”
“Nothing from the source himself, obviously,” Somi sighed, “I was kidding myself to think I could get a word in with him. I’m not even awake when he’s out. He was patrolling this morning from 3 AM to 5 AM according to the Nightwing subreddit,”
“You should pull an all-nighter next weekend,” Y/n joked, “maybe then you’d get him,”
“I really would if I didn’t have responsibilities to take care of during the day,” Somi groaned, “this article could make or break my career,”
“Well, what do you have?” Y/n asked, “We can start somewhere other than his personal account,”
Somi straightened up, opening her notebook on the coffee table, “I did find some info on the guy who wrote the slander article,”
“Ooh, okay,”
“Apparently, ‘Patrick Lumbard’ isn’t his name—I can’t find his real one yet, but I looked him up in the city records and there was nothing,” Somi wiggled her eyebrows, “but, according to the Scoop’s records, he got fired from his last job, yet he’s writing front-page articles after four months of being here!”
“Watch out Lois Lane, here comes Jeon Somi,” Y/n giggled. “Nice job!”
“And here's the kicker—I looked up a digital archive of a 2003 article about our new boss, Mr. Kim, last week,” the blonde explained, “I took notes on it, but that doesn’t mean much because the article is gone. It isn’t in the records or online,”
“What?” Y/n furrowed her eyebrows as she took the last bite of her bagel.
“Yeah, I can't see why,” Somi continued, frustration seeping through her voice, “the article was pretty neutral; it just described his acquisition of an abandoned Wayne Enterprises project,”
“Weird. Wayne Enterprises is a little fishy if you ask me,” Y/n lied back in her chair, finishing off her drink. “Keep me posted. Good luck,”
“Of course,” Somi smiled, grabbing the trash from the table and tossing it in the bin beside her, “But I think you’ll need the luck for class with Heeseung,”
Tumblr media
“You see, these vigilantes, particularly this Nightwing guy, is doing nothing for Bludhaven,” the professor claimed, removing his glasses, “they spread fear and undermine our police,”
Y/n took pride in the fact that typically, her professors liked her. Sure, sometimes her grades wavered, but she was a well-favored student. But then, in a way-too-hot room with 30 students all facing the center, that track record was at risk.
“I disagree,”
Jake. Before Monday, Y/n had never expected him to be in this class—but she had never been happier to hear his voice than now.
“Well…this is a discussion,” the man replied, “explain your stance, Mr. Sim,”
“I think he’s helping us out,” Jake shrugged. “Sure, ideally, we wouldn’t need him to save us every night, but we do. Before Nightwing got here, this city wasn’t safe for any of us,”
Whew. And Y/n didn’t have to say a word!
“How do we know that he has our best interest at heart?”
“That’s a good point, young man,” Professor Jung pointed towards the seat adjacent to Jake’s where…Lee Heeseung sat. Of course. As if Y/n didn’t have enough reasons to dislike him. Screw him and his t-shirt for knowing the professor would crank the heat up way too high. What was even worse is that he did have a point.
“We don’t know,” Y/n piped in, the already hot room feeling even more stuffy as she stared lasers into Heeseung, “But look at Gotham and how much Batman has improved the overall safety and morale of the city—maybe it’s worth the risk if Nightwing could do something similar here,”
“People being above the power of law enforcement is dangerous,” Heeseung countered, staring right back at the woman across from him.
‘Hold on…was that a condescending smirk on his face? Right now?’ Y/n was pissed. The lack of sleep was catching up to her.
“Yeah but—” Y/n cut Jake off before he could even start.
“The rich already are,” Y/n scoffed, “and if law enforcement can’t serve us all, maybe heroes that do are exactly what we need,”
“And with that, our discussion comes to a close,” Professor Jung interjected, “we started too late to have a full-blown debate, sorry about that. Great job, everyone,”
Y/n was proud of herself for countering the word of the professor and formulating her argument so fast. She could not, however, understand what she did that was so worthy of ridicule that Jake started giggling the moment class was dismissed.
Tumblr media
The nap. It was the best part of Y/n’s day ever since Lee Heeseung and his girlfriend started having sex in her building. Even if she wished it could restore her life free of consequences, it could not.
The first problem it brought was that she always woke up feeling like she had just gotten off a 10-hour flight. The better the nap was, the more this rang true.
And, as expected, the second consequence was that it made her sleep schedule even more irregular than it already was. Usually, when she couldn’t sleep later in the night because of Heeseung, Y/n would put in her earbuds and hope for the best. But on the nights that she snuck in a nap? Hopeless.
Tonight was one of those nights. The lights were off, the moans were louder than ever, and she was wide awake. Somehow, knowing Heeseung had a girlfriend made the noise even more unbearable. A little. She wouldn’t be able to tell you why if you asked. Regardless, she needed air.
Usually, Y/n would have been smart enough to not go walking alone in the middle of the night in Bludhaven. She’s no idiot. But she had pepper spray and a fairly strong taser on hand. She was going to be fine. (I promise!)
There’s something about nighttime in Bludhaven that Y/n found so special. It was unsafe in areas, certainly, but every once in a while, the night felt like one that a synth-pop album would be written about. Somehow, it made her miss her family and friends back home while making her feel glad to be right where she was at the same time. On nights like these, she would get a coffee and go for a short stroll—usually with Somi.
“Hi, can I get a small decaf coffee? Two sugars, two creamers?”
Brenda’s Cafe. Best coffee in New Jersey. Open 24 hours (now that Nightwing is around).
“Sure, coming right up,” The barista smiled, taking the cash from your hand and heading to the back.
“RING, RING!”
Y/n scrambled to reach her phone, “Hello?”
“Y/n! How’s it going?”
“Sunoo,” the woman grinned as she paced around the cafe, “hi! How’d you know I was awake?”
“Eh, figured it was worth a shot with the whole neighbor problem I keep hearing about—you have the sleep schedule of a cat who works full-time now,”
Sunoo and Y/n had known each other since middle school. Now, Sunoo was working on a movie on the opposite coast. It was difficult to time their calls with his packed schedule, to say the least.
“Yeah,” Y/n replied with an amused tone, “How are you? How are your fancy schmancy show-biz friends?”
“Well, I certainly made some more,” Sunoo began, “the cast of this movie is hilarious and they take me out to dinner all the time, so we’re getting closer,”
“Yes, I love to hear it!” Y/n exclaimed, grabbing her coffee from the barista’s hand and giving a nod of thanks before heading toward the exit.
“And how’s the hot snickerdoodle neighbor?”
Y/n’s eyes widened as she pushed the door open, “I called him hot one time. And that was before I knew he was a jerk…that had a girlfriend,”
“Girlfriend, huh?” Y/n could hear Sunoo’s misplaced pity through the phone. “That sucks,”
“No, it does not suck,” she insisted, adjusting her scarf, “I’m fine. Besides, you know that I’m trying to graduate this semester. That’s the only reason I haven’t reported the guy,”
“Yeah, yeah,” Sunoo dismissed her, “still sucks,”
Y/n rolled her eyes. He was not going to let this go. “Anyways, how is your sist—WOAH!”
Y/n’s phone and coffee flung out of her hand as she was firmly pushed towards the road, nearly falling to the ground if it wasn’t for another force pulling her back by the jacket.
Y/n paused for a moment in disbelief. What the fuck just happened?
“Y/n?” the woman heard Sunoo’s voice coming from her phone quietly between the sounds of footsteps getting further and further away.
Her phone was safely lying on the side of the road. Her coffee? Not so much. It had spilled everywhere. Including her new coat. But as thoughts raced through Y/n’s head, her coat was the furthest thing from it. ‘Someone pushed me because they were being chased…by someone who took the time to save me,’
Her disbelief quickly turned to excitement as she put the pieces together. Could the person who saved her have been Nightwing?
“Y/n, what happened? Are you okay? Do I need to call Somi?”
Y/n scrambled to her retrieve her phone, “I’m fine! I’ve gotta run, but I’ll explain everything tomorrow,”
“Wait, hold o—”
“Bye!”
She thought about calling Somi right that second, but she needed confirmation. So she made the questionable decision to follow them. Somi’s reporter instincts were clearly rubbing off on her.
After walking with a comical level of caution for a few minutes, Y/n decided to turn back. As I said before, Y/n is not an idiot. She makes educated choices.
What. A. Night. She was eager to tell Somi—despite the fact that she’d criticize Y/n’s poor educated choices, she would be happy too.
All of a sudden, interrupting her train of thought, Y/n heard a whistle from across the road.
There he stood, in all his blue and black glory—Nightwing.
A skin-tight black suit with blue accents adorned his tall frame and he had a pair of nunchucks in his right hand, which he tucked away before placing a cup of coffee on the ground next to him.
This was a moment that Y/n would remember for years to come. But right now, she couldn’t believe her eyes. Nightwing, the man responsible for taking down the biggest supervillains and mobs in Bludhaven…bought her a coffee. She waved to him in gratitude, to which he waved back with a smile on his face before disappearing into the shadows.
After he left, Y/n rushed over to retrieve the coffee cup, her heart racing with elation.
Brenda’s Cafe Start your day with a smile! decaf coffee two sugars two creamers

I have slept on it, so here is a mostly unorganized list of every thought currently in my head on the blue beetle movie. lots of spoilers. this is really long.
SHE WASNT BEAS DAUGHTER. I WAS STRESSED.
That was straight up Ted’s origin story. Why did a Jaime movie include Pago island or carapax at all. You could’ve made a movie about one of Jaime’s stories and you literally just adapted Wein Beetle?
(Despite my frustration at it being included in a Jaime led movie, it was a good adaption of that source material. but again, why make it the source material?????)
I don’t know why DC doesn’t believe the best legacy character of all time can stand on his own two feet and why they don’t understand the magic of the three beetles all bringing something radically different to the legacy but it was my biggest frustration.
Despite that, I thought it was a really good movie, and in the end most of the things that frustrated me won’t matter to the kids getting to see themselves reflected for the first time. And people in my theatre definitely enjoyed it. Jenny & Jaime’s kiss got like. A lot of claps. I am not with them in that space but it was nice the movie got applause.
He was a perfect Jaime. I knew he would be, but goddamn. In general, it was a really well-directed and acted movie with great visual design with a script that was very weak at points.
(people clowned on the ‘family makes me strong’ cliche stuff in the trailers and it was very cliche and on the nose in how the script incorporated it.)
I am probably going to see it again soon now that I’m not sleep deprived and sick with anxiety over the whole thing fdjdjjsksk
okay into specific shit I keep thinking about: Bro was that Jarvis’s skull or Dan’s they crushed. that shit is haunting me.
Victoria sucks. Jenny is generic and doesn’t make sense to me but not offensive. I liked Rudy by the end.
I think most of Jenny’s screen time would have been better spent on setting Khaji Da up as a character rather than a resource. That “KHAJI DA” moment was fucking electric when it happened in the comics for the first time and the movie totally mishandled it. Khaji should be a huge presence in a Jaime movie I feel.
On that note, the “Khaji, I need you” was probably one of my fave moments. More of that would’ve made me happy.
The first scene with the transformation was pure fucking joy. They captured perfectly the terror and horror of Hamner’s art in those first few issues when Jaime doesn’t have control yet and the suit looked SO good. I didn’t think it looked bad by any means in previews but even after seeing all those previews I literally gasped seeing it because it looked so much better on the big screen. Seeing the picture perfect recreation of the lights at the fingertips was like a transcendent experience I’m different now
In general the fight scenes were great. I still hate Khaji’s voice and how much the movie version seems modeled after iron man shit but seeing the reach alphabet on screen was like. A level of joy I didn’t expect it to be fjdksksks and the moments of khaji just pulling out toy after toy to an increasingly into it jaime was really fun
I was nervous about grown up milagro because I just personally have a very firm concept of grown up milagro she’s important to my future jli ideas but um. mouthy goth in stompy boots with fishnets who punches hard and calls women hot is actually literally exactly who she is to me so. big fan of that adaption.
They did Bianca DIRTY. I liked that she influenced Khaji to start speaking Spanish (I love that khaji started speaking Spanish) but she felt like a totally different, worse character than comics Bianca who fucking rules. leaving out entirely that she was a doctor frustrated me and could’ve made the Alberto heart attack scene much better. A lot of more interesting character was lost to “streamlining” that wouldn’t have been necessary if they focused Jaime’s movie on Jaime’s supporting cast instead of ted kord fanfic
Killing Alberto was a fucking mistake and focusing a JAIME REYES story on anger and revenge was frustrating. So much of what makes him special was ignored I felt and they tried to make him a more generic superhero type when Jaime was a new kind of hero who influenced a lot of legacies that came after him.
Which leads me to Dan! The decision to make Dan’s connection to Khaji the same as Jaime’s sucked. Jaime is special BECAUSE he can utilize the scarab in a way neither of his predecessors could. They undercut THE PROTAGONIST to make some old white guys look better. It made me very frustrated.
No dentist reference :( pre-law instead :(
Nana being a former revolutionary was delightful, but her using a ted-designed Gatling gun to mow people down completely ruined any attempts to have Jenny stopping kord industries from making weapons matter. That SHOULD have been a good plot point, but the movie couldn’t stand by it.
Here is the section where, despite complaining the movie focused on Ted too much, I focus on Ted too much:
Listen he’s bad at having a secret identity but not “scarab tile mosaic over the secret entrance to his lab” bad
I understand the narrative & social reasons to have Jenny’s mom be what inspired Ted to be a better person than his family but as a Ted fan it did irk me to imply his compassion for the little guy was something he had to learn rather than something he always had that set him at odds with his family. Like I understand why and I don’t have an issue with it being included in this version of the story but I am required to point out it isn’t true of the comics character
I wanted to hate the extended focus on teds lab but omg that’s my friends teds houseeeeee. I loved the suit and the video game console and the fact it was my friends teds houseeeee in a movieeeeee
I lost my goddamn mind at ‘like Batman but with ADHD’ like yes! you correctly boiled him down to his essence!
when Jaime went to put on some of Ted’s clothes I was like ‘lol they’re not putting him in anything Ted would wear’ and then he walked out in a matching silk tracksuit in beetle colors so like yeah movie you got me there he would own that
BUG AS MECHA. I was BESIDE MYSELF.
Like I can NOT stop thinking about that scene. With the bug crawling over the wall while some Ted-as-hell 80s music blared with three of my favorite little comic people inside. I am also different now after this scene. I will probably see this movie in theaters several more times just for this scene.
“Kickstart my heart” being the song tho Ted you are so annoying and I love you
me for most of the movie: SHUT UP ABOUT TED SHUT UPPPPP
me at the after credits scene: if I don’t hear everything about ted right now I will die
I find ‘trapped in a computer’ stories really compelling and unsettling. The chances of me writing movie verse fic with fucked up weird tech horror is high. I love tech horror.
Mike Norton is related to a family friend and from the area and I happened to go to the movie with my family bc I was visiting for my moms birthday and so we did all lose our minds at somebody we’ve met being thanked in a movie credits fjdjdjsksk

i feel like ever since comics left the silver age there has been this bizarre nearly fetishistic desire to associate robins with this stripping of innocence that has to do with you fundamentally still seeing them as the child robin figure for it to be shocking. like killing robins, having them be in these toxic relationships, showing them being sexualized (often by notably older chars) is all part of this really uncomfortable still ongoing trend. and i’m not saying that as robins grow up they can’t experience sex and sexual exploration or dark themes, i actually think ntt’s take on this was really honoring of dick and explored what it would be like to grow up under the robin mantle and also what it would take to come into one’s own identity afterwards, but usually this trend makes me really uncomfortable, like how dick has been written to be sexually assaulted multiple times (ive never seen it done tactfully), or how more than one adaptation has harley make a comment about how much dick has grown up (ew), or how they wanted to kill tim drake with aids in the 90s (they instead went with extrano). i guess while there is nothing technically wrong with making an adult male character a little sexy, the modern obsession with dick’s ass feels like an extension of this to me still. like dc and it’s fans don’t know how to be normal about robins. idk if that makes sense or maybe i project too much but i just really wish there was more skill and intention with writing robins and less schlock and awe
hm while i don’t disagree i feel like the general ‘stripping of innocence’ happened to most child or at least happy go lucky characters (e.g. bucky barnes), not just robin. Robin stands out cuz they’ve been the most recognisable child/sidekick hero in media. Comics in general took a turn to darker (less fun) “serious” stories in the 80s. Robin in particular has been a target for hate since the 60s because fans thought he made batman campy and gay (there was the whole seduction of the innocent thing where they said batman and robin were coded queer messaging trying to indoctrinate the children). I think rather than Dick, Jason got hit with the most ire of the editorial and fans and when stories kept getting darker and darker, he became an unfortunate victim. Dick (at least in this time period) had a lot of dignity, getting a well-thought out coming of age narrative through nightwing and being firmly cemented as a respectable, reliable adult hero (thanks to the titans and his romance with kory). While comics always had a touch of fanservice, his sexualization really started around the late 90s and had a resurgence during the n52-rebirth era. I think any of his prior sexualization was standard male fantasy stuff (this guy gets all the ladies type thing). I think in Tim’s case they weren’t going for a “let’s destroy his innocence “ thing and more of a way to both modernise him for a contemporary (90s) audience and also distance him far away from the gay allegations (how ironic lol). They still wanted the kid watson to Batman’s brooding sherlock but also just more “normal” so the kids relate. Which is why they made him a cheater etc and i know how tf is that better but they really didn’t want him to be gay fhdjfj. I don’t know much abt the aids story pitch though. Steph and Damian are also better examples of “stripping the innocence” storylines for Robin than Dick and Tim. Steph also had a tragic death, and Damian’s first introduction is as a child assassin (antithesis to innocence). I agree that it’s weird people are so weird abt robins (and child characters in general) but imo it reflects more on an audience’s (and editorial’s) insecurity regarding childish, campy things because why are you mad at the camp medium for being camp? Learn to have some fun LEWSER.
I feel like most dick grayson fans feel so strongly abt this is because they like his prudish and insecure ntt characterisation (and so do i tbh it’s very interesting) and also the multiple SA storylines that a) never got resolved or b) were handled poorly. BUT that dick grayson hasn’t been in comics for a while now. We haven’t seen any acknowledgment from dc’s editorial that dick is a rape survivor, he’s been consistently characterized as a confident metrosexual (eww hate that word) guy both in his civilian and superhero persona (and that agent 37 grayson thing is the biggest culprit here). He’s also retroactively being portrayed as a smooth talking flirt in his robin days now so clearly that’s what they’re going for (imo i think they’re doing what they did with tim to dick's robin just to make him look more “normal” and relatable and straight).
Dick’s robin era is still treated as peak batman&robin era and he’s still a symbol for innocent, “simpler” times. He’s gotten the most grace when transitioning from child to teen to adult hero. On the topic of his sexualization aka the butt issue, it’s only cuz he’s one of the most popular male hero they can sexualize. I genuinely don’t think there’s any malice from the editorial since Dick has been an adult for 40 years now and there’s nothing wrong with sexing up his stories BUT ALSO i get why fans are upset cuz they’re deliberately ignoring his past characterization and sexual history to make him into a more palatable, marketable character. And tbh it’s been going on for long enough that it might as well be his defining character trait now :/ .

So this is it…we’ve finished x-force. All issues done. All story lines done and all interest done. So why do I still feel like nothing happen? Was time wasted? Was it really all for nothing…
Fair warning I do ramble on for quite a long time, but it’s for good reason! Anyways…let’s begin.
Chapter 1: A Promising Start/ First Impressions
When I first stumbled into the new era of the X-men I was originally very skeptical. For someone who doesn’t have any comic book knowledge outside of a few DC and Spider man comics from the early 2000s I was expected to be lost. But then after reading a little of the new era, made by Johnathan Hickman, I was truly intrigued in what I was seeing. Sure I had questions…many of which I wouldn’t get the answers to unless I read spin off comics of the new era. Despite that I was beyond HOOKED!
Tumblr media
When I first saw this I immediately thought back to deadpool 2 and what they did with X-Force. Now not everything as memorable in that incarnation of the team you still had colossus, deadpool, and domino. 2 of which was seen here and the last one would come a little later. Outside of that I knew a lot of these characters already:
Beast
Wolverine
Colossus
Jean Grey
Deadpool
Domino
I’ve seen all this characters at some point in my life to give the X-force branding of comics a try, and thankfully I did. Sure, I didn’t understand a lot of the context behind why certain characters acted a certain ways but I could appreciate how rare those moments were. Most of the time if I just kept reading the issues I’d understand what was going on, especially in relation to the newer characters.
Kid Omega
Omega Red
Sage
X-23
Black Tom (I think that’s his name).
The dialogue between both the old and newer characters, to me, really sold me on this new era. It got me invested with what could happen to these characters. On the side note, I don’t really see many people talking about this, but the art style of these characters are VERY COOL!!! It looked fun and expressive! I’ll show examples of why I love the art so much throughout this. It really says a lot about what your gonna read, for better or for worse.
If it wasn’t obvious at this point, I clearly haven’t read comics or even x-men comics for years. So when you hear my opinions just remember that my knowledge on certain things are fairly limited in most aspects. I. Don’t. Know. Everything. Yet I’m still enjoying what I’m reading so far, with or without connections to the past. To me that only enriched everything, not the pinnacle of my interest in this initially. Anyway…let’s continue
Chapter 2: Enjoying the concept material
In my opinion, the first couple of arcs with x-force seemed like they had promise. They had a lot of interesting stuff going on. Take this for example.
Tumblr media
Colossus, a mutant that everyone has heard of and it known for his heroism snaps the neck of this random mutant…THAT RAISES HUGE FRICKING QUESTIONS OF YOU ASK ME! Like why is he killing people? What’s the importance of this character to him? Based on how this is drawn it looks as if he struggled to kill her even though his face doesn’t portray that, the veins on his muscles do. Speaking of the art colossus looks more cold and distant being in his metal form…and every time I saw him before he never gave me that impression. It was always more light hearted rage fulled or disappointed dad (thanks Deadpool 2), but never cold murder. a more underrated question, HOW OLD IS COLOSSUS?! I mean he has a fricken beard now…didn’t know he could grow one.
Or…what about this!
Tumblr media
Why does Jean look so…classic and basic in her design? Compared to Wolverine and Hank she doesn’t look like she belongs there. Even though she’s going through Omega Red’s mind she seems to be the odd one out. Speak of designs why does Hank got mad scientist energy now? Wolverine…more understandable since I’m pretty sure this guys a villain. Although this looks more painful than any super hero interrogation I’ve ever seen before. This doesn’t even look like interrogation, this looks like torture.
What really caught my eye in all this was the moral ambiguity at play here. Reading early x-force a lot of that was present, and as some one who loves seeing situations within the grey area this satisfied me greatly. Look at this conversation between beast and Jean.
Tumblr media
Now I’ll address this later, but look at the points they make. Normally the X-Men are depicted as people who want coexistence between humans and mutants, yet here Jean weights the two evils and says lying is for humans not mutants. She views that as the bones honest path for x-force than what beast did.
Although beast, surpassingly, does have a point. A lie would only suffocate the process needed to save their nation. They already have enemies who would want nothing more than to harm them, so what’s the point in letting them strategize when he can just kill then now? Why should let billions die in the future when we can kill one person now and save billions?
Do the end’s justify the means…that’s for you to decide.
As for me though I’m picking up so many mixed signals here from beast on this one. Look his eyes, their blackened, this is mostly for evil, corrupted, shady, malevolent intent. Yet there’s a sense of honesty when beast confesses his mindset here. It’s almost as if he himself doesn’t enjoy the ruthless calculus of war at affect here. He hates himself for it. He wishes he could be on Jean side and yet after experiencing so much pain and damage he doesn’t see the point in being hesitant with those who want to hurt you. For him the line was drawn when they even had a thought of hurting Krakoa. Even Jean, who has her back turned towards him, seems to be getting what he’s saying. In some way she gets it. But she doesn’t want to get it, she doesn’t want to understand his reasoning but she does.
First time I read this I was stunned! Like all this was just one panel?! Wow! I really hope this continues onward. I would love to see every character get this much depth in them!
I could go on here for ages about this stuff, but if you really read x-force this is kinda what it’s about. At least until we get towards the end…which is where I started to realize the issues in all this beauty.
Chapter 3: Problems in paradise
Remember when I talk about how much I adored the concepts of what I was seeing? How much I loved what the art brought to the table so subtlety? Well…look at this.
Do you see anything wrong with it? Probably not. And honestly I didn’t either when first viewing this.
Tumblr media
Just colossus suspiciously murdering someone. Initially I didn’t think much of this because I thought, “hasn’t he killed before? Why put such emphasis on this one?” But look back x-men history the writers and artist always illustrate the emotional distress of colossus murdering any one. He has never taken any pleasure in doing it, and he hardly does it. So when he does do it you gotta ask, “what did that person do to deserve that response from him?”
Anyway we’re getting side tracked here. Next photo.
Tumblr media
Do you see a problem here? Again probably nothing. Art looks great, nothing outstanding but nothing terrible either.
On to the last photo.
Tumblr media
Did you spot the issue? No? Well, just look at the number on the top left and right side of the photos. Do you see it now? I’ll explain. The first time we see colossus arc really begin is in the 24 issue of the comic. The next time we see it is in issue number 39. The very end of the arc is issue number 46. You could argue that his arc spanned several issues in between them…I wished it played out like that. The reason why I chose these 3 photos is due to them being the only time we see the colossus arc take center stage. Now you probably asking, ‘okay so if his arc wasn’t taking center stage then what was?’
This is what was taking place:
Change in X-Force leadership
The quiet council putting colossus as a member.
Beast going rogue and wolverine in pursuit of him
Kid omega disappearing in a fight after a corrupted Cerebro goes on the loose.
Kid Omega coming back, not really a kid anymore, but he has x-force follow to the future to deal with beast.
Beast and wolverine have a massive fight.
The build up to the Fall of Next before it was officially dubbed so. And so much more.
All of this was happening alongside the colossus subplot, it’s a boring waiting game. For someone reading this for the first time it felt like watching an amazing episode air for the first time only to wait a week or two later for the next episode. (Disney plus)…
But it wasn’t a week or two long it was YEARS! Years for a plot that could have being unraveled by some common sense by professor x only for it to never happen, despite them being in the same room with each other so many times! You literally see him on the quiet council every single day and get you don’t ask how he’s doing? Especially after seeing his behavior towards his own teammates?!
Tumblr media
To his lover at one point?!
Thematically this works…but for the viewer this feels scattered and rushed. Hell the photo on top isn’t even from X-Force it’s from Immortal X-Men! Why is his arc being stretched like this, only to have no impact on x-force directly? I get it, if we spread out colossus influence it will show the readers how big of a problem this really is. The ripple effects of you will. But when the ripple effects don’t lead anywhere for a long time, constantly put to the sidelines by other major events, and then given a mediocre finale it doesn’t increase the impact it lessens it.
Not to mention the conclusion of this arc is simply colossus killing his brother which is earned don’t get me wrong, I loved that. His brother deserved death. But the very second we see colossus again it’s with x-force as if nothing happened. I don’t even remember if we had a conversation or a look into colossus psyche after everything happened. It’s just straight to the Fall of X which is already happening by issue number 43.
This doesn’t even stop at colossus though, domino has that same issue. Being skinned alive, tortured by an forgettable villain, and having it all be undone by a res set button called resurrection just feels wrong. Makes it seem pointless…
The true tragedy by far isn’t even those characters…it’s by the series main stars of the show.
Chapter 4: Beast Agenda Finale/Shattering my expectations
So Wolverine vs Beast. Again, another great concept from X-forces writers and editors. And another disappointment. Why? Because every time we get close to the conclusion to their huge fight beast manages to slip away. This one…this one got me the most upset. I remember waiting around for ages to see the conclusion of this arc, this cover art didn’t help.
Tumblr media
Yet, despite the lies this cover baited you with we don’t even get close to the finale of the beast saga. He runs away, and the only thing that does die in this issue is just beast many clones. Boring, and useless.
But you want to know what really left a nasty scar on me during this arc. The characterization.
Was gonna show an example but I reached the picture limit…didn’t even know there was one.
Anyway, what I mean is characters don’t talk naturally. It’s always it either drive forward the conflict or to build up the conflict. There’s rarely any moments we’re characters just talk about what’s going on in their lives. It’s just moment to moment action. Feels lifeless.
Going back to beast, after reading what people think of this version of beast…I see where your coming from I truly do, but I love this version of beast. He’s actually the incarnation that got me interested in every other version of the character because his actions had context and if you had the context it would enrich the actions of this character. It wasn’t required but you were rewarded for doing so. Despite his very obvious flaws he has a point in a some of what he does. Or at least there’s an external reason that tragic on why he feels the need to do this. As explained with the Jean and Hank conversation I’d like to think the reason why Hank is fighting so hard for this country is because everyone saw what happened to Genosha! No one wants their homes to be destroyed by those who hate them the most. Not even that but it shows how broken Hank truly is from everything…that’s depressing yet intriguing to read.
And I wished this version of the character was treated with the same respect as the other incarnations and not given a shitty finale. A finale that completely reboots his character and pretty much states to the readers that we as the writers are done with this character and all that hyped up facade was worth nothing…no redemption and no future. It just hurts…and as I go back into the past to see better conclusions for this character I fear this version of the character could fall future and future down the rabbit hole.
This is why I hate reboots.
Last thing I want to say on this character is the art. What. The F@$&. Happened.
Tumblr media
Beast (Prime), as he is referred to now, looks the exact same as the one in the past. For anyone thematic reason this could have, all I get from this is laziness. From an artist and thematic lens’s they should be different. If they had made them both different it would hit home how time has really change these characters. But since they look the same I guess that nuance also doesn’t mean anything. The art used to be diverse and fun while also being serious and dark. Now it’s just flare and boring not to mention lifeless. It’s just another pointless experiment for a pointless finale.
Anyway, thanks for reading this very long post, took me about 4 hours to finish this. Had a lot to say obviously 😂. Hope this gets you to understand how I feel about this whole thing, anyways thanks for reading and take care! Oh and if you want a better deep dive into the personality of both beast go to @positivelybeastly he does a wonderful job on that front.

Tumblr media
Before this movie came out, there were some reservations about it–whether it would be good, or if it would even be released. There were problems with the state of the DC movie universe, for starters, and the weirdness going on with Warner Brothers management. Despite all of that, the guys at Warner Brothers insisted that this movie was coming out, and that it was “one of the greatest superhero movies ever made.”
It is… not.
Barry Allen is the Flash–a founding member of the Justice League and the fastest man alive. Upon getting a better grip on his power to travel through time, Barry decides that he can prevent his mother’s murder and clear his father’s name through a very simple switch-up. So he does that; except he’s thrown out of the timestream unexpectedly to his eighteen-year-old self’s life, where his mother is alive and he’s in college.
Except everything’s changed! Because changing history isn’t only going to change the present, it also disrupts everything else, so Barry’s now in an alternate timeline. And in this timeline, Zod is invading and Barry can’t find Superman or the League around to help. So he’s got to figure out how to save the world, and then get home.
Yeah, it’s another loose adaptation of Flashpoint.
This movie was being billed as the thing that was going to reset the DC continuity for the movies and put it in the new state for Superman: Legacy. Except watching it, the movie is plainly not that at all–the way the universe is left at the end of this movie is not really compatible with whatever they’re doing with the new DC movies. The end result is that the movie feels pointless in its conclusion, a funny little one-off that affects nothing.
It’d be more forgivable if we’d had more time with this iteration of Barry Allen/the Flash. Instead, much like Superman in Snyder’s movies, we’re skipping straight to big stories without developing these characters enough to care. And now we’re getting no more of Barry Allen, or at least this Barry Allen.
Which is kind of a shame? Because I went into this out of curiosity, and I didn’t expect that much from it. I remember for the first third of the movie or so, I was having a surprising amount of fun. I liked this version of Barry. I enjoyed seeing his interactions with his fellow Justice Leaguers, and I thought about how I’d love to see more of these characters interacting. I’d love to see more stories about Barry, but I don’t think we will, at least not anytime soon.
Also, Ezra Miller went kind of insane in the last year or so, and that’s probably an admittedly good reason as to why they’re not rushing to make more anytime soon.
The multiverse is pretty weak here–people have written pieces as to why we’re all sick of the multiverse by this point, and that’s fair. Other than the main Plot itself, where Barry is in an alternate timeline, it only really comes up in the climax, to sort of say, “Hey! We remember all of these past DC iterations! Do you?” Okay, fine, that doesn’t make it good storytelling. It’s not terrible, it’s just not great, either.
Michael Keaton’s a fun Batman. I’m going to be honest with you–I never had much attachment to the 1989 Batman. I liked this take on Batman, though I don’t know if that means he should have replaced Ben Affleck, or even the Thomas Wayne from the comic; the decision to reference the Burton film felt more like fanservice than something that actually made sense.
Also! Question: why does Iris like Barry? By the end of the film, she’s clearly interested in him, and while we know he’s a great guy, the way he’s acted towards her throughout the movie isn’t very appealing from her point of view. She should be incredibly skeptical about his prospects as a romantic partner, if anything. It seemed like a typical ‘Nerd guy gets The Girl’ Hollywood trope than actually writing for the characters.
This movie feels like it’s had a dozen reshoots added to it, to try to make it appeal to more fans through references, and to try to make it fit or not fit in a new DC universe. And while it’s great fun at times, I’d have preferred if the movie only tried to tell a singular story. I would like an actual Flash movie that had Barry interacting with his own supporting cast and rogues gallery–because Flash has an amazing rogues gallery! Thawne! Zoom! Captain Cold! Mirror Master! These would be fun on a massive blockbuster budget!
And it’s pretty darn egregious that, with everything that’s going on in Warner Bros, that they canceled Batgirl, a film with a female Hispanic lead, and kept straight on with this, when its star has actually committed crimes and threatened people.
I don’t know! I had more fun watching this than I expected, and that was a nice surprise! At the same time, this far from “one of the greatest superhero movies ever made” that was promised–I don’t know how someone even arrived at that proclamation, unless the executives decided “nostalgic references to previous movies” counts as quality. Given the state of Hollywood, that’s a possibility.
If you’re a massive DC fan, or liked other movies in this iteration of the DC universe, than you’ll probably have some fun with this movie. But is it a must-watch? No. Not even close.

For the ask game: 1. Hattercrow 2. Scriddler 3. Riddlehat? Is that a thing that exists? Bonus: Ratcroc
Thanks for humoring me with the Ratcroc. Let's do this.
Hattercrow
1. What made you ship it?
My buddy's fics got me interested enough to seek out comics featuring the characters, and the cartoons hooked me the rest of the way. I enjoy the times I've seen them work together in comics and I really wish they were utilized as a team more (if only to see them get in each other's way over and over). I think Jon and Jervis have compatible shticks, they have similar enough interests, and if DC writers would remember that Jervis is an inventor once in a while, there's a lot of cool stuff that could be done with them together.
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
I like that they got such similar issues with different executions. They're both book nerds who invent their own weaponry. Neither of them would know a healthy relationship if it bit them in the ass. They mess with people's heads in different ways. It's fun to explore how the similarities between them could cause friction or make them more dangerous as a team.
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
I like depictions of Jervis where he acts more childlike, but not where he's overly naive. I'm also not big on stuff where he is significantly younger than Jon.
Scriddler
1. Why don’t you ship it?
I think both characters are interesting, I just don't see that kind of chemistry between them. It doesn't do anything for me.
2. What would have made you like it?
I don't know. Maybe seeing more stuff where they actually work together? Or at the very least are shown to have some common interests beyond being supervillains.
3. Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?
I see people do some really nice art of the two of them, and there are a couple of fics for this pairing that I have really enjoyed. It's just not a pairing I tend to seek out.
Riddlehat
1. Why don’t you ship it?
I'm not sure I've ever seen this pairing outside of a trio with Scarecrow, but I'm not opposed to it. It's just not something I've thought much about.
2. What would have made you like it?
It would be cool to see them work on robotics stuff together. I want to see them talk shop about their inventions, playing video games together, stuff like that. Could be fun.
3. Despite not shipping it, do you have anything positive to say about it?
They have some common ground that could be fun to explore. I’d be interested to see what people do with it.
Ratcroc
1. What made you ship it?
They both live in the sewer yet they don’t really interact in anything, which I found strange. Ratcatcher is pretty misanthropic, so I think he’d have a better chance of getting along with someone who is used to being treated like they’re inhuman. Croc also needs more friends and/or sewer roommates. It also continues the trend of Croc being the more chill one in whatever pairing he is in (thinking of June Moon, Mary Dahl, etc).
2. What are your favorite things about the ship?
I like the idea of them being each other’s exception to how much people suck. I think Croc wants acceptance from people much more than Ratcatcher does, though I think Ratcatcher would jump to his defense more quickly. He’s a pretty angry and vengeful guy, so heaven help whoever messes with either of them. I also think Croc would force him to begrudgingly interact with people more often since Croc has more friends who aren’t rats.
3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have on your ship?
It’s such a rarepair that I think shipping it at all is probably the least popular opinion haha

Asking because apparently he has a crossover with the Shadow and the Spider : do you have any thought on Peter Cannon, Thunderbolt ?
(Spoilers for, all of the Peter Cannon stories basically)
While there’s been a lot of discussion around the Gillen/Wijngaard 2019 mini and it is, easily, the best comic made with the character and one I’d heartily recommend to everyone, I’m instead gonna be talking more here about Peter Cannon the character, who turned out to be a much more fascinating rabbit hole of information to dive into than I’d expected. Much like his stolen costume implies, Cannon is a character of dualities and contradictions.
Tumblr media
Peter Cannon is actually owned by the estates of Pete Morisi, his original creator. In other words, it's a creator-owned superhero from an era which tended to have the rights consumed by the corporate bodies. When you compare and contrast to Watchmen's eventual fate, that's a fun one for me to think about - Kieron Gillen
He is not just another Charlton survivor drastically altered and fragmented by the Watchmen cataclysm: he is this epistolary composite of several different characters and ideas in conversation with each other, characters whose legal rights and defining traits are all over the place and still kind of building up on each other even now. He is, simultaneously, more fragmented than his Charlton brothers, and yet the only one who’s been able to remain consistent over the decades. Peter’s roots go back further than theirs, even though he is currently exiled from the universe they’ve been relocated to, a state of affairs that in some ways makes it so that he is, at once, more trapped under Watchmen’s shadow, as well as more free from it.
He's like a weird game of telephone that started in the crudest beginnings of the Golden Age superheroics, and with at least one touchstone every couple of decades all the way until today (he got a new series announced this year even), with different characters all inspired by each other and ripping off each other to various degrees existing separately across 80+ years, each belonging to different rights holders and universes, oscilating wildly in popularity, influence, and just how much they have in common with each othe, but still telling a long-running story as if they were one and the same, which they are and aren’t.
We have the original sources (and ensuing riffs or public-domain usages of said sources), the creation of knock-off created due to licensing issues who’d become an established character in his own right, different attempts at remixing the source ingredients ultimately creating knock-off of a knock-off, the badboy knock-off of the original knock-off who’d catch on with the times and go on to be massively popular, and then things would break down as said knock-offs start to congeal together in fragmented mirror freakshows of each other that have to exist together and who knows what’ll happen from there.
Or, I guess to try and put it more simply,
Tumblr media
-cough-
Cannon’s even had more than a couple of separate “universes” and superhero casts built around him, by virtue of the fact that his comics cannot have access to the actual Charlton supporting cast, so they have to fill in for stand-ins, and because he’s under that pulp/public domain zone, his comic runs don’t really have any continuity with each other, except they kind of do, because they are all building up on each other even if just thematically. The Cannon Canon is rather limited, and every writer who tackles the character has had to go back and dig into the prior runs to find.
Tumblr media
Peter Cannon being several entities in one isn’t even just a facet of their turbulent publishing history, it’s an aspect that’s actually made it’s way into their stories proper. The 90s DC run established that Peter is the reincarnation of the monastery’s greatest hero Varja (a misspelling of vajra, a divine weapon/tool which symbolizes the properties of a thunderbolt). The 2012 run took a plot point from the classic run that was Peter’s manifesting a life-like dragon illusion to scare a villain into retreating (and how that ended up foretelling Ozymandias’ whole “world peace through giant squid attack” plan), and made the storyline about how Peter Cannon-Thunderbolt and The Dragon, the world-conquering threat he called upon to defeat and enact a benign version of Veidt’s plan, were one and the same. And the 2019 run had Peter’s development born from encounters with two separate versions of himself: Thunderbolt, the Ozymandias stand-in who’s been repeating alien genocides across worlds for 30 years in the hopes of it eventually working, and Pete Cannon, a professor who lives a fulfilling human life in a world without superheroes.
Peter Cannon is Bill Everett’s Amazing-Man using Daredevil’s costume and setting (said Daredevil would go on to appear again and again Death-Defying Devil and any number of different names the character’s appeared under because his original name is taken and his characterization can be anything). Peter Cannon is Thunderbolt. He is The Dragon. He is Iron Fist, who is another rich white blonde masked adventurer/vigilante/martial artist rework of Everett’s Amazing-Man. He is Adrian Veidt, who is Ozymandias. He is Thunderbolt from another world, who is Peter Cannon as well as Ozymandias and Dr Manhattan. He is Pete Cannon. He will probably be something else in the near future as well, as a response to the world around him.
His original 60s stories capitalized on the increasing interest in martial arts and martial arts philosophies, the perpetual Western fascination with buddhism and Tibet and love of orientalist tropes that had taken on, shall we say more benign forms, compared to the early 1910s or 1930s, with Peter Cannon being both the ultimate White Savior, as well as someone who wants nothing whatsoever to do with said “whiteness” and the world outside of the monastery, and that being such an inescapable aspect of his entire backstory and make-up, that it forces writers into a dilemma as to how they deal with it, and thus, find ways to make it workable. His 90s run was heavily focused on post-Cold War politics, Peter’s PTSD as well as reworking him into a better, more compassionate hero as a response to Ozymandias as well as working with the idea that Peter would eventually go on to join the DCU, which didn’t happen. The 2012 series takes a broader focus on disarmament and recontextualizing the character, and the 2019 series is pointedly about a lot of things and many of them have to do with Watchmen and the broader superhero genre, but also where Peter stands in said genre and world, what is it that this character speaks to or about.
Tumblr media
What fascinates me is how utterly reluctant Peter Cannon is to get involved. He mostly wants to chill with his best mate, Tabu. Stories are often about the push and pull between Peter Cannon (who wants to just study the ancient scrolls and be left alone) and Tabu (who wants him to go and be the Superhero Thunderbolt.) This happens again and again through the run, almost to the point of comedy. It's rare that you see a superhero who needs as much pushing to do something.
He’s like a more responsible early Peter Parker. Actually, he’s like if Peter Parker had better ethics and morals. And with Tabu it’s like Uncle Ben never died.
The push and pull between Peter Cannon the man and Thunderbolt the hero is the interesting weird part of it. We're led to someone who's Sherlock-Holmes smart, with a similar distance, but has nothing but contempt for the world's mainstream civilizations. Why be a superhero when this is the world he's protecting? At the same time he doesn't - as Ozymandias did in Watchmen - fall into the trick of believing just because he knows more he gets to tear it all down.
It’s to some degree close to the trope of the white savior, but rather than someone like, say, Iron Fist, the interesting thing is Peter Cannon literally has not earned it. He’s not the best or anything else. He didn’t choose his path. He knows he’s not worthy. He’s an apex human, but he’s an apex human because of this other civilization that is better than we are.
If you ask 99 out of 100 superhero comic fans to tell you something about Peter Cannon, they’ll say inspiration for Ozymandias. You can’t avoid that. As a device to talk about influence and how comics change, with Peter Cannon you cannot avoid the ghost of Ozymandias.
But it has to be bigger than that - Kieron Gillen on Thunderbolt
Tumblr media
I find it interesting also how Peter’s personality contrasts with what he is, what makes him more interesting than the typical white savior. He didn’t find a magical monastery amidst general globetrotting, he wasn’t rescued and taught magic martial arts and decided to use them to go and fight crime, he quite literally had no choice in the matter. He was born in the monastery (or taken there as a 6-month old baby), his parents died due to a plague he just barely survived, and he was raised by monks for 20 years and decreed to be The Chosen One (whether by the sheer improbability of his arrival and survival there, or as a gesture of honor toward his parents), and then instructed to return home and help others in his native land, a land he had no memory or fondness or any attachment for.
He grew up in a fantasy land of great knowledge and compassion and magic that was constantly targeted by a rotten and corrupt outside world trying to destroy and plunder it it, and then he was ordered as an adult to go live in that rotten and corrupt world and fix it because it’s where he comes from, having superheroism thrust upon him by no choice of his own. The rest of the world looks at him with awe and wonder and fear because he’s a Great Man capable of impossible things, things that to him are basic and banal and things he hasn’t really mastered as much as he could or should. At the same time he complains about the world outside home, he’s also driven to prove himself, to live up to his calling as The Chosen One, and it sucks. Being The Chosen One sucks for him, sucks in general, and it’s what he is. I think there’s a lot of potential to a superhero take on The Chosen One that fully explores just how awful that trope is and how disastrous it could be to said hero (Griffith from Berserk is one example of that)
Tumblr media
It’s an interesting position he’s coming from as to why he’s a reluctant hero, why he’s so removed from his call. Even before Ozymandias, there's an aspect of Peter Cannon's core concept that makes him feel indeed like he's being more forced into heroism than anything and that, under different circumstances, it wouldn’t take much to push him into villain territory to begin with. Which is why his runs are so preoccupied with Cannon’s humanity, Cannon’s connections to the people around him, and Tabu specifically, that make him human. It’s where this impossible superhuman genius Great Man with the world on his shoulders, trying to navigate an impossible position with catastrophic room for error, with such proven potential for darkness, gets to breathe easy and find help, remember that saving the world is never a one-person job and that he is not alone.
Tumblr media
I love how this is consistently where all three of his last major runs have ended on, in the 90s with his growing humanity and friendship with Tabu, in the 2012 mini where Tabu and the Charlton stand-ins come to save him at the end, and in the 2019 mini where he is forced to acknowledge his own failings, his own self-described lack of personhood and the consequences of a genius far removed from humanity making decisions for it, so that he might overcome them and grow into a better man and friend, and that’s how we end with this,
Tumblr media
some 60 or 80+ years of storytelling for this character, and the other characters he’s been, somehow forming a remarkably coherent character arc through it all and a promising future, or at least, the potential for one. Not that this was necessary for reading said run or getting to this moment, but going through the entirety of the Peter Cannon Canon before rereading the 2019 mini definitely gave me much needed context for the character, and also reaffirmed that this kiss, this development of Peter and Tabu’s dynamic? This was a long time coming. Come what may, I’m terribly interested in what else will come out of this strange and fascinating amalgam of comics history (so long as it doesn’t have a certain raccoon man’s name attached to it) and what the future holds for Peter Cannon and whatever else he may be next.

Superboy # 1 Review
*Spoilers!*
I know I primarily post about Academy X here…but I have layers people and truthfully….X-Men kind of sucks right now…
So I am reviewing instead MY FAVORITE CLONE of the DC verse- Conner Kent AKA SUPERBOY!!
The issue starts with Conner being super villain cockblocked…
Conner is feeling “replaced” and “inadequate” at Metropolis by all the Superkids around…which is kind of dumb considering no one in the DC verse is frankly as effortlessly cool as Conner…(I mean look how many times Diana has tried and failed to rock a leather jacket…)
Conner then flies somberly back to Smallville, to bring back coffee to Ma and Pa Kent…who suggest Conner is wasting his coolness on Metropolis… (I heard Metropolis is super gentrified now anyway Conner!)
Conner decides to go intergalactic and with an unstable teleportation device- teleports to a planet that’s being decimated by meta human clones based off of Earths superheroes and Cadmus cloning! (Well that’s super convenient!)
Conner battles the clones and let’s the
Main villain- the Dominator (sounds like a BDSM Marston villain…but okay…) scenery chew for several minutes while the aliens of the planet evacuate, before really cutting it loose with his TK.
Just as Conner looks like he has won and confirms to the Dominator that he’s alone; the big bad releases ship upon ship of clones.
As Conner is regretting his choice to go at this alone- the Cosmoteers show up to kill all the clones and plan to kill Superboy!
Review:
Truthfully I am disappointed. Conner feels pretty “blah” here.
Sure, we got some of the old Superboy ego and bullheadedness with Conner borrowing shady technology and totally not bothering to do any homework on the planet or the current conflict…But I felt like this book had pretty limited humor and snarkiness that readers more or less expect with characters like Conner.
It would be like if Hellion lost his “mean girl” edge to suddenly be written more or less like Sam Guthrie…
Reading this- I felt like it was often copying Kirkman’s “Invincible” (the meta humans even LOOK like Kirkman/Walker characters!) than really being a “Superboy” comic…
The problem with Conner, much like the problem with Laura, is Geoff John’s pretty much tanked his prior personality years ago…
Where Bendis totally killed Laura’s introversion to make her a generic “Logan”- John’s stopped having Conner be a total shit. 😕
It’s weird comparing it to the 90’s solo series- I know people complain about Conner being sexualized/“jailbait” in it now and his relationship with Tana being problematic…but the series was at least a fun commentary on current pop-culture of the time. Conner kind of IS the perfect character to talk about Social Media/shameless self promotion/influencer culture…Yet this book has none of that.
Conner should frankly HAVE an edge and yet he feels pretty dang generic in this book.
Much like Deadpool and Plastic Man- I think writers really struggle with writing these kinds of characters anymore.
You need someone who can write comedy and is willing to take risks instead of playing it safe…you need someone who has an eye for social criticism…you need someone who can break the fourth wall effectively without it becoming generic or annoying…and you need someone who can be pretty creative…and I just don’t think DC and Marvel HAVE these kinds of writers staffed there anymore.
Even Gail Simone, whose Deadpool run I LOVE!…her “Plastic Man” mini several years ago was pretty disappointing and played it pretty safe, in my opinion.
Part of the problem is- a lot of these characters feel sanitized to fit into the “superhero mold” they were originally created to criticize. Where they were originally SUPPOSED to be more or less outsiders of the world they inhabited…now they’re focal characters of the universe.
I am glad however that the writer went back to Conner having TK instead of generic “Superman” abilities- I HATED John’s for removing it.
Overall I thought the art was pretty “meh”. Not terrible but not memorable either.
Con’s telekinesis looks more stylized off of QQ and other telepathy/telekinesis- which is a bit disappointing.
I was confused if the Domineer is supposed to be Citadelian? I am always surprised more isn’t done with them, since they were always pretty frightening… (and I just want Tamaraneans to pop up!)
Overall- I would have rather had Conner do something in Hawaii again or Young Justice stuff or in a Mongul “War World” type of situation or pretty much anything else than where this story is gonna go (him befriending Cosmoeers and realizing he doesn’t “have to do things alone”….
Predictions:
Obviously “befriending Cosmoeers/realizing he doesn’t have to go at it alone” story…

Hello ooc introduction! Last updated 5/21/24
I’m Coolcat101s (that’s where I follow from) I’ve been rping on and off for over a decade now, but this is my first time rping in the dc community. My response speed and length varies but I’m online often. I’m primarily a mobile user.
Much like dc canon the ‘canonical’ (for lack of a better word) nature of any given story line is decided by vibes especially since this is a crossover friendly blog I figure this approach will help make things mesh best so if I ever have plot holes or contradict myself maybe that was a different continuity
Along that thought line while there are plots happening and time passing, because rping takes time I won’t say there’s like a set matching timeframe if that makes sense? comic time logic you know? Sometimes a day takes 3 panels and sometimes it’s 3 issues.
It can take people a while to reply I get that ^^”
Posts are in character unless otherwise specified, but some posts are meant to be things that happen in the “real world” the stylistic chooses should make these posts obvious but I like to practice writing with my ocs so expect those sometimes
-
I am okay with shipping/flirting with Artem I think it’s fun ^^ but be aware that they are pretty oblivious to many things
I’m okay with violence in rp but I’d like a conversation before we do anything that would need a content warning
Same with more suggestive content, conversions first, probably using a red/yellow/green check in system in the tags
Minors can interact but be mindful! Muse and mun are the same age (You should really be mindful anytime youre in a mixed age group but that is sometimes forgotten by many in online spaces) I tend to keep things pg 13 and anything not would be tagged as ‘suggestive’. Any minors caught interacting with anything tagged as suggestive will get one warning in case they didn’t read this post but after that you will be blocked if it happens again
Im crossover friendly but only for content that I know if I don’t know it Artem will act confused and will wrap it up to multidimensional shenanigans causing worlds to temporarily touch or whatnot. ( known crossovers that I’m chill with: Danny Phantom, Miraculous Ladybug I’ll add more as I come across them I guess)
Artem was a self insert at one point but they became their own thing after rotating them in different scenarios so now they’re their own oc
Ongoing arc(s):
Power suppression arc (hiatus kinda, abduction interrupted so might be done)
Magic experiments
Completed arc: abduction arc
Bread boy arc
-4’11 blue eyes, hair is naturally brown but they keep it blue
-birthday June 11th (whatever year makes their age match mine in whatever continuity also their chart isn’t mathematically possible but it’s what makes sense for them)
Tumblr media
-they’re agender and pan/demisexual, also polyamorous in theory but single in practice
They have a boyfriend ( @bugboi-of-gotham )
-currently has 3 children legally but in the process of adopting more
-went to college on a full Wayne scholarship, they have a bachelors in English with a minor in folklore
-job hops between restaurant and goon positions
-the first goon they ever worked for was calendar man when they were 17 and they currently work under riddler, penguin, scarecrow, and ivy
-they get robbed a lot because they have a resting smile and generally give the vibe of an easy mark when not hanging out with scary people (subsequently they hang out with scary people often)
-lives in a building owned by Red Hood but it’s debatable if they know that
Due to plot they are moving to the Manson family Manor that they inherited with their kids and bb
-Forcibly outed as a meta publicly during the abduction arc
Artem also has an easy time learning instruments and perfect pitch but they don’t equate those to a meta ability (it is linked to their power though)
-has a cat and an aloe plant
-soft spot for kids
-Artem is a witch but doesn’t have much time to study, does small spells though
-grew up going to an anti meta church/cult
-Joker killed their mom in front of them when they were 16, they aren’t really the killing type when at all possible so they don’t seek vengeance but they avoid him at all costs and will not work with him
Layout of the Manson Manor! (Manson being Artem’s mother Amara’s maiden name, if the Wayne’s are gothams royal family then think of the Manson family as like barons of gotham I guess? Rich in an old money way. Probably not well known by average people but press/other gotham elites might recognize the name. They’re like the 42nd richest family in gotham)

Hi!! Could I have a male PJO & Marauders match-up pls? Thank you so much in advance! 💖
LOOKS: I'm a mixed race Latina with long dark hair, brown doe eyes, pale-olive skin w/ a light dusting of freckles, & a curvy, top-heavy hourglass figure!
STYLE: Baddie/Bombshell + Pastel Grunge!
DIALECT: I sound like a pretty typical Valley Girl that makes people tend to underestimate me (💀) but occasionally, a subtle Southern drawl slips out!
MBTI: INFP
GODLY PARENT: Aphrodite Areia ~ aka the Dark Feminine aspect of Aphrodite! Not many ppl know that she was a warrior goddess too, not just the patroness of Love & Beauty. Ppl do terrible things for love sometimes & the intensity + seductive aspects of it can be dangerous. Aphrodite was born of the sea but the sea is not just beautiful but deadly & unpredictable as well!
DEMIGOD GIFTS/ABILITIES: Charmspeak (people & animals alike tend to gravitate towards me!), Empathic Manipulation, Strong Swimmer (Aphrodite was born of the sea after all!)
WEAPON: I’d definitely use a mortuary sword while riding on a pegasus tbh
PERSONALITY: I'm told I’m the personification of the Subversive Bimbo trope (like Harley Quinn from DC Comics) bc ppl tend to underestimate me since I come off v sweet & bubbly until I’m given a reason not to be BUT I have a sharp temper so give me a reason & I will be the first to lash out. When I get mad, I don’t hold back & my sarcasm becomes VICIOUS but as long as you don’t piss me off, you won’t be on the other end of it.
People on my good side say I’m affectionate, vivacious, feisty, sweet, friendly, intuitive, sensitive, idealistic, impulsive, snarky/funny, & smart!
People on my bad side say I’m a fiery, stubborn, opinionated, temperamental hellcat lol. I can go from 0 to 100 real quick & God help the person who disrespects my S/O bc I would go to WAR for him. He is my ultimate Achilles Heel bc I would sacrifice myself for him in an instant.
I might be a bit of a Nihilist lol…And when I’m convinced of something, I can be hella stubborn & will go to bat for it, for better or worse.
I love really hard & I’m Fiercely protective of those I care about but my intense love for them can make me reckless.
I'm a sweet lil firecracker lol, both fiery & feminine (my winged eyeliner is my warpaint lol).
TLDR: I’m told I'm sort of a "good girl gone bad" type, both sweet sugar & rebellious spice. 🤭
LOVE LANGUAGES: Words of Affirmation + Physical Touch
ALIGNMENT: Chaotic Good
ENNEAGRAM TYPE: Counterphobic 6
HP HOUSE: Slytherdor (aka Justice, by any means necessary)
PATRONUS: Swan (Delicate-seeming but fierce & protective!)
LIKES: Animals of all kinds, True Crime, All Forms of PDA (I LOVE AFFECTION!!!), Dark humor, Comic books, Singing/Musical Theatre, Astrology, Psychology, Writing, Genealogy, Fun Facts, Iced coffee (can’t live without it tbh).
DISLIKES: Bigots, Animal Abusers, Driving, Obnoxious or Pretentious People, Womanizers, People who are indifferent to others, waking up early
Thank you so much in advance, lovely!! 💖

Since no one else is posting a blue beetle review I thought I might as well!
So I saw the movie yesterday and I went in with low expectations. As a dc fan we all know the movies in the dceu aren’t necessarily of the highest quality most of the time. This was easily one of the better dceu movies. The heart of the movie was put on the family and it made it just full of compassion.
My main complaint is the cgi looked pretty shitty at moments. I’m not saying that as a I hate superhero movies so I’m gonna complain about cgi cause grrr. I’m saying it cause it was noticeable enough to take me out of the movie. Not all of the time but a couple of times.
The other thing is the villains weren’t super interesting. They weren’t bad by any means, but they weren’t fun to watch by themselves. Speaking of which some of the side characters were kinda bland but most of them I rather enjoyed. I liked the sister’s connection to Jaime and how even though she’s blunt and a little intense you can tell she still loves her family. Cause again the family is important. The nana was a delight. I am always gonna love the person you don’t expect to a badass is a badass trope. It’s so funny if done right which it is here. The dad’s purpose to the story was great and some of my favorite scenes were with him and Jamie just talking. George Lopez’s character was better than I thought. I feared he would be annoying or I wouldn’t feel like he was a character just George Lopez. I think he was funny enough while not being overpowering.
The romance between Jamie and Jenny did feel a bit forced in. I am not against romance being in movies at all. However I feel like it needed more build than they could do in this movie. Jenny as a character overall felt kinda of defined by who she knows not necessarily who she is. Which don’t love that. I think we could use more development into her if we wanted a Jamie and Jenny relationship.
Ok let’s talk the superhero stuff. The fight scenes were decent. They were mostly cgi so kinda hard to show off the awesome stunt actors. Definitely not the best fight scenes we’ve seen from dc. I personally believe Harley Quinn has those. The plus side is blue beetle is a relatively underground character to the mainstream. So there isn’t as much comparison as there would be for characters like Superman and Batman. I liked as a comics fan they made reference to the past beetles since they decided to go with the third blue beetle. They did their best to mesh into the pre-established superhero world referencing Batman, Superman, the flash. I don’t think we needed that honestly it was set far away enough from the other characters we didn’t need that. I think the tiny references like Jamie wearing a Gotham law sweatshirt work better than the characters randomly mentioning them.
And last I want to mention Jamie Reyes as a lead character. So I liked that he was a lot different than most of dc’s other leads. For the obvious he’s a lot younger and he’s the first POC lead the dceu has had. So I do like that we are seeing that from them. It’s great that they are reaching out to new kinds of characters. I really love how his heritage is important to the plot and to the character.
So overall or the tldr I liked it. 3.5/5.

I wonder what all the younger heroes plan to do career-wise once they're older. What do you think? I can't really see Bart becoming a scientist like Barry or Wally, or a reporter like Iris, so he's a mystery. Maybe a counselor like Ed? Helping kids with traumatic backgrounds? Does Jaime want to be a dentist like in the comics? What about Cassie? She doesn't wear a mask or anything, so is she a public hero now? And Virgil? Even Tim and the other Batkids? Sorry for the overload, just curious!
Tumblr media
Sooo... for reasons I cannot explain, I am terrible at thinking these sorts of things up (seriously I can even do it for my own life) hence why it has taken me SO LONG to come up with any of this (very sorry about that)... anyway, here goes...
Careers…
(there is absolutely no logic or reasoning behind most of these - I just wrote down the first thing I thought of… and I have no wider DC canon knowledge either...)
Ed - (who is probably the easiest one) would be some kind of counsellor… maybe if we ever see the sanctuary thing Dinah mentioned in the last episode we could see Ed actually working there as a counsellor (I presume there’d be councillors there) - the MHYC certainly doesn’t seem to have much happening there anymore - so maybe that’s his next step?
Bart - definitely something with kids - I imagine he loves babysitting and being around kids who are bursting with energy all the time - he’s good at keeping up with them - so something that involves taking care of them.
Jaime - an engineer… i can see him studying in something technical but I definitely cannot see YJs jaime being a dentist… but who knows maybe he is - Greg and Brandon do like keeping in obscure comic details - like Dinah being a florist.
Traci - something with animals… I can imagine her working/volunteering in an animal shelter and having a strong connection with all the animals
Cassie - a writer...
And Virgil - something artistic... illustrator or photographer maybe...
Again, there’s no actual reasoning behind these two, I’ve just got this image of Cassie shadowing Clark at work and cassie not shying away from going straight into a difficult story and Clark being impressed and a really great mentor - those two bonding would be so fun to see (honestly, after s4, I just want more Clark interacting with the youngsters - it'd be cool)… Then maybe Virgil could be like the jimmy Olsen to Cassie's Clark Kent - they have such a strong friendship, and I like the idea of them teaming up outside of the hero game - it doesn't have to be in journalism, but whatever it is, she writes and he illustrates to create something truly epic!
Raquel - I have no clue and can't even think of something random...
same goes for kaldur - though i feel like for him, up until the end of his arc in s4, his life was being Aquaman or serving the king/council in some way and nothing else... so yeah, no other clues on him.
then, Dick - a detective, but in his off time he goes back to his acrobatics...
and Zatanna is a stage magician.
And that’s all I got for potential professions. In terms of secret id’s, I will say i have always been confused on what the situation is with those who don't where masks who are public heroes - Ed, Virgil, Cassie - i presume they're just out and, given nothing has ever been said otherwise, I guess they don’t get too much trouble from it. I don’t know but I would really like to see what everyday life is like for those who don’t wear masks - I imagine there’s the odd selfie request… and now I have the image of Ed and Bart walking down the street when they’re stopped by someone asking if they can have a picture with Ed the Outsiders, the kid gives Bart the camera and he and Ed just share a knowing look at each other before taking the picture, the kid thanks them both and goes merrily on his way while bart and Ed playfully tease each other for the rest of the day.
Thanks for the messages anons - I hope this answered at least some of your questions…

Dc literally called Kon the twink of steel on their official website. If that’s not baiting I don’t know what is
https://bleedingcool.com/comics/dc-comics-dubs-conner-kent-superboy-the-twink-of-steel/
Allllright lets talk about that because I think there's some lack of clarity about what actually happened here!
'Twink of Steel' wasn't language used on their official website. I know the Bleeding Cool article says it was, but it's Bleeding Cool. Take everything from Bleeding Cool with a grain of salt, for the sake of your own sanity. What actually happened is that the phrase was part of a blurb used in an eblast newsletter that linked to an article on DC's website titled "Superboy: Losin' It is Fun '90s Nostalgia with a Dash of Attitude". The writer of the article even clarified he was not the one who wrote that blurb. If you click the link that Bleeding Cool embeds in the article, it becomes apparent that the "Twink of Steel" phrase is nowhere on the page.
Now that that's clarified, some additional thoughts: as someone who has done that job of working on eblasts that go out to thousands and thousands of people (not for DC obviously, but an arts organization) it's... marketing language, sure. I would even agree there's a degree to which you could consider it baiting, but it's.... I don't exactly know how to explain this the right way.
In pretty much any big organization there's a huge distance between 'people making the decisions about what's happening with characters' and 'people who write blurbs for eblasts'. I just don't think it makes much sense to read too much into this incident.
The traditional 'baiting' as in 'queerbaiting' is when creatives/marketing alludes to things there's zero intent of actually following through on, to get a queer audience interested. it's saying 'well maybe that'll happen, read and find out!' when they know damn well nothing is going to happen. A blurb in an email newsletter that goes to an already existing audience that had to sign up for the newsletter for an article about a 90's comic arc just does not feel like it's really the same thing. It just... strikes me more as marketing language that was probably just not very well thought out.
If it was an article about something in current continuity/something upcoming then i'd probably feel differently about it—because that'd feel like there's more intent behind it. If it was actually a phrase used on their website somewhere i'd probably feel differently about it too—because that's a far more vetted platform, something would have had to pass by many more sets of eyes before getting published there, which again implies more intent. But that's not what the situation was, ya know?
Edit to add one more thought... regardless of anything else, this was linking to a fan news article that has the following disclaimer at the end:
"NOTE: The views and opinions expressed in this feature are solely those of Joshua Lapin-Bertone and do not necessarily reflect those of DC Entertainment or Warner Bros."
Even if this article had actually used the phrase, DC has their automatic 'it wasn't us, we just hosted it' language built in. That blurb, while not written by the writer, was meant to be representative of this article which specifically states it's not necessarily representative of DC's opinions/views. So again, marketing language that was a bait-ish bad choice? Sure. But DC genuinely trying to bait anyone with it? That just feels like such a stretch.
