[enters IMGflip] [emerges 3 hours later with Goncharov (1973) and The Goncharov Trilogy book series memes] Please appreciate what I do for you with nothing more than a vague recollection from reading the books as a teenager and only recently finding out there was an entire movie made from them, apparently.

saw a post asking about goncharov’s first name, so for those of you who don’t know, his name is ivan. it’s never used in the film so i get why people wouldn’t know if they haven’t read the books, but yeah he’s ivan goncharov

What's your favorite book trilogy, other than Goncharov? I'll start!
I genuinely believe the Hunger Games were an "over-franchised" series when the movie adaptations came out. The books never disappoint, though. I've read each several times whenever I need that extra dose of antifa, almost-literally-eat-the-rich themes in lit.

it’s not common knowledge that goncharov (1973) dir. martin scorsese was such a groundbreaking exploration of the mafia that coppola actually based young vito corleone on goncharov himself, going so far as to cast bobby de niro to play him in the godfather part ii. the assasination of don fenucci was even modelled after the scene where goncharov takes out mario’s father.

i think in our desire to get carried away in perceiving and analyzing the homoerotic subtext in goncharov, we are forgetting the true object of affection and desire that is utterly central to the film’s aesthetics and themes: The Car

I feel like with this whole 'Goncharov' (1973) resurgence thing going on, too many people are completely ignoring the underrated book trilogy that the film is originally based on. They updated the time period and setting for the movie narrative, but it's basically the same story minus that ridiculous 'Ice-Pick Joe' henchman character which they added in for some reason, and the fruit market scene that preludes Katya and Sofia's affair is originally a flashback from 'Mob Love' between Katya and her childhood friend visiting from Petrograd.

Listed fandom rankings ...
We've just hours to go before signups close for the 2024 FTH auction. In the history of FTH we've only had one fandom ever break 100 signups in a single auction — MCU had 100+ signups in 2020. Right this minute, however, we're only 3 signups away from having a second fandom crack that number. K-pop is RIGHT ON THE EDGE. Will you help it make it across that line? Or sign up for another fandom and bump them up the list? There's still time. Do the thing!
At the top of our listed fandom leaderboard, we have the top ten:
97 K-Pop * 83 Good Omens 55 Sherlock Holmes * 47 Harry Potter * 46 Marvel * 39 Mo Dao Zu Shi / The Untamed 37 DC * 35 Avatar The Last Airbender 30 Star Wars * 29 Scum Villain's Self-Saving System

Goncharov, Star Wars, Stonewall, and Disco, and the 1970s: an epiphany.
ETA: This is a discussion of Goncharov as a meme and how it relates to Queer culture, therefore I am not tagging it with the “unreality” tag. Goncharov is not a real film, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t important; for reasons I will now explain.
I may be going crazy, but I think I am on to something regarding the true meaning of the whole Goncharov phenomenon, and it's kind of related to Vaporwave and the image that people who didn't grow up in the 1980s or early 1990s (or who have hazy memories of it from their earliest childhood) have enshrined it in the "aesthetic" of vaporwave. But while the themes of Vaporwave are tied to capitalism and consumerism, the "aesthetic" of the 1970s has very different associations.
The whole 70s-to-80s transitional vibe is a favorite topic of mine: right before the Muskrat bought twitter, I tweeted a whole thread about how Panos Cosmatos channels that whole vibe better than nearly any director I've ever seen. (Yes, even Quentin Tarantino - fight me.)
People are watching the new Star Wars media, which are all based around the Original Trilogy and therefore have sort of the same 70s "aesthetic look" of the time in which those movies were made. George Lucas was incorporating and repurposing as much regular stuff that existed in the 1970s that he could, and it contributed to his "used, lived in future" vibe that I think people really glommed onto when they saw the films.
For example: Aunt Beru's outfit from the first film looks like something the actress could have worn on the street in 1977 without anyone giving her a second glance.
Tumblr media
People all over the film (but particularly in the scenes on Tatooine) were wearing regular clothes and then making them over or putting accessories over them to make them look futuristic and alien; "Star Wars Bounding" before that was really even a thing. Their regular 1970s street clothes.
This is related to Goncharov because: people are watching Andor and The Mandalorian, and they're starting to ask "what happened to the 1970s aesthetic? Why don't we bring that back?"
Even more than the 60s and the 80s were at various points, the 70s have for a long time been a punchline for bad taste, but there's something more sinister to it beyond merely sneering at the outdated fashion of a previous decade. And it hit me while I was watching this video about the rise of Disco and how Disco's origins were connected with the Stonewall Riots.
The joke about the Goncharov film hoax is how it's a "forgotten film" and about "analyzing the themes of Goncharov." About themes of homoeroticism, about two men (one of them a Discotheque owner on the run from a repressive regime) and two women who are in love, all of whom are unable to consummate that love, because of toxic masculinity and cultural expectations. About clocks being a frequent and repeating symbol - about the characters’ time running out. And the film basically disappearing from public knowledge and being forgotten for decades because these themes were "ahead of their time." (All of this originating from a post about a pair of knockoff boots.)
Because this is a metaphor for the LGBTIQ experience in the 1970s if ever there was one. About a time when an intersection of Queer-BIPOC culture proudly asserted itself for a single shining moment in time - then was eventually subject to both a bigoted, racist backlash and a horrific epidemic so damaging and deadly that we're still analyzing the human cost and the effect it had on society as a whole. Queer culture exploded onto the scene in the 1970s - and then its time suddenly ran out. Or was cut short.
Goncharov - or rather, the spirit and the moment in time that it represents - wasn't "forgotten." It was buried. First under a racist, homophobic/transphobic backlash, then by the malignancy of Reaganism and the AIDS virus that Reagan and his policies enabled to spread and kill thousands. Under the sneering condescension and bigotry of the people who want this spirit to stay buried.
But this spirit is unkillable. Tumblr just gave this spirit a name: Goncharov.
This same spirit is in Andor, to a point - because Queer culture is being actively repressed by the usual bigots and fascists, and Star Wars in general has a running theme of resisting oppression, and it is firmly anchored to its 1970s roots despite taking place "a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away." Spoiler warning for the Andor season finale: but it was impossible for me to see the scenes of rebellion and not flash back on this recent tweet from Dan Savage in the wake of the Club Q shooting:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
("Out of the bars, into the streets!")
One of the things I think about all the time is what would have been if the right wing bigoted backlash had been turned back, and how things might be different if Reaganism and the AIDS crisis had never happened. What our culture might have become. How much further ahead we might be than we are now.
We're still facing that same toxic right wing backlash right now, but it's our duty to resist and survive however we can, hoping that this time we might turn the tide.
Stonewall lives. Disco lives. Goncharov lives. Long live the Rebellion.

goncharov breaching containment  and people are saying things like: “omg what if they actually made goncharov” when it would be so much funnier to make an actual goncharov 2 instead, and just fill it with references and throwbacks to the first film every second by just making up unhinged shit like it has all this really strong continuity and set up.
then we all start talking about how “the goncharov trilogy is the greatest mafia movie trilogy of all time” just to piss off film nerds and fans of the godfather like gonch the 3rd is a thing

Wait you wrote books? Is it just a collection of fake facts? Did you ghostwrite goncharov?
I have a sci-fi trilogy, an art book, a webcomic, a tarot deck and more.
But only one person could write Goncharov.

1. HOW MANY WORKS DO YOU HAVE ON AO3?
129 . . . i write exclusively short oneshots so take that with a grain of salt.

362,664 which is a feat for ME!
3. WHAT FANDOMS DO YOU WRITE FOR?
semi-regularly:
bbc merlin
marvel (spider-man)
percy jackson
dc (batman and superman)
have written and posted for:
doctor who
house md

ACCIDENTAL HEROISM / the batman (2022)
THE JONES-WATSON-PARKERS / mcu spider-man
MYTH CALLS ME LEGEND / bbc merlin
BRING ME HOME / percy jackson
YOU'RE THERE WITH OPEN ARMS / bbc merlin
merlin fandom . . . you will always be famous to ME!
5. DO YOU RESPOND TO COMMENTS?
yes, always (or at least i try).
6. WHAT'S THE FIC YOU WROTE WITH THE ANGSTIEST ENDING?
hmmm . . . WAIT. LAFF. this is so funny because i think it's FINAL GOODBYE, my sole goncharov fic because goncharov dies at the end. fr though, maybe WE CAN MEET AGAIN SOMEWHERE which is a pjo fic where i killed percy off lmao. i have since realized that i apparently don't write a lot of angst . . . an interesting to note about myself for sure!
7. WHAT'S THE FIC YOU WROTE WITH THE HAPPIEST ENDING?
due to the nature of my writing—short oneshots—they all mostly end happily! maybe IN THE NIGHT (mergwenthur with platonic merthur and merwen and romantic arwen) because it was just soft all the way down!
8. DO YOU GET HATE ON FICS?
no, i don't think so.
9. DO YOU WRITE SMUT?
sometimes. the mood just has to strike yk <3
10. DO YOU WRITE CROSSOVERS?
uhh if you mean characters from Fandom A meet and interact with characters from Fandom B then no? i have written fic inspired by other fandoms, but those would be AUs then . . . i'll go with no.
11. HAVE YOU EVER HAD A FIC STOLEN?
not to my knowledge!
12. HAVE YOU EVER HAD A FIC TRANSLATED?
nope. some people have asked though! i was deeply honoured but i like to keep my fics on ao3 instead of any other site and they wanted to post elsewhere.
13. HAVE YOU EVER CO-WRITTEN A FIC BEFORE?
wait. i just remembered, oh my god. SCREAM. does 13 year old me's rp count? because that would retroactively change my answer to the crossover question since i DID do that. it was so godawful and was probably 100k—started out as bbc sherlock fic and then bbc merlin got in there along with doctor who and supernatural and probably every fandom under the sun after that. we never posted that anywhere (thank GOD) but what a time. i don't co-write now. not for any particular reason, but i don't think it's come up.
14. WHAT'S YOUR ALL TIME-FAVOURITE SHIP?
see, this question is so hard because i write and consume so much different media. at the moment, in my current doctor who phase, i'll say tenrose! ask me during a different phase and you will get a different answer hehehe <3
15. WHAT'S A WIP YOU WANT TO FINISH BUT DOUBT YOU WILL?
all of four of them 😭 one reason i write oneshots is because my interests wanes so fast. you'll be hard pressed to find me in the same hyperfixation for longer than a few months, but i always come back eventually. specifically, RENEGADE'S RETURN (dc dick grayson-centric) would be the WIP imo because i posted that with no intention to finish it. all the other ones i had hopes, but this one . . . no </3
16. WHAT ARE YOUR WRITING STRENGTHS?
prose and characterisation. i think i'm getting pretty good at writing in the pov character's voice. like if you take my house md fic and compare it to . . . i don't know my raven cycle fic, i think the voices are distinct enough even with my same writing style:
HOUSE MD: New Orleans sticks to House’s skin. It reminds him of the Philippines. Long days baking under the sun, oppressive heat blanketing his entire body, sweat pooling at the top of his lip. At least when he was in the Philippines, he wore shorts and a tank top to cool down. Currently, there are about three layers on his chest—undershirt, button-up, blazer—and the AC in this place wheezes and puffs out mildly cold air like an overweight asthmatic kid attempting to run a marathon. THE RAVEN CYCLE: Adam Parrish does not have many things. A bare IKEA mattress, various pieces of makeshift furniture made out of cardboard, and a three-dollar rug he found at a sale. It’s not much, but it’s his and he’s proud of it. Sometimes, though, pride doesn’t discount how hot Virginia summers are. His skin is sticky with it, the light cotton of his shirt clinging to him, restlessness twisting under his skin.
i tried to pick two snippets that are generally about the same thing (summer heat!). at least to Me, this seems different enough in tone, but you know. vibes!
17. WHAT ARE YOUR WRITING WEAKNESSES?
my inability to write long form is genuinely not only a weakness but so so so detrimental to me fr. every fic i have written can EASILY be at least 25k EACH. probably more (definitely more) because i write the moments in between or . . . [sigh] let me say this instead. with longfic, there's usually a moment or a scene that you want to get to, the whole fic is culminating to that scene so you write thousands upon thousands of words to get to where the that scene would make sense in context, yes? well. for Me . . . i just write The Scene™
18. THOUGHTS ON WRITING DIALOGUE IN ANOTHER LANGUAGE?
i'd fuck up google translate so fast (and have), so something like "they speak in spanish" or "'hi, how are you?' they ask in spanish" would be preferable to me.
19. FIRST FANDOM YOU WROTE FOR?
definitely pjo percabeth fic at the age of like . . . ten (10). i posted it on ffnet and have since scrubbed from the internet.
20. FAVOURITE FIC YOU'VE EVER WRITTEN?
funnily enough i created a series which is just fav fics that i've written which sounds so egotistical, but whatever. there are 13 works in there, i believe, and most of them are merlin lol. but in recent memory it has to be a tie between JUDAS KISS and THREAD OF GOLD (both arwen fic !!!) because i experimented with my writing sooooo much there, JUDAS KISS being first person and THREAD OF GOLD being second person. i typically write a close third person pov especially for fic. my prose is wired for that, but it was so fun to try to do that for first and second anddddd i got some banger lines out of it so a win's a win!
THREAD OF GOLD: Your father’s presence is larger than life. Larger than love. It looms. It casts shadows long enough to hide every hope and dream you’ve ever had for yourself. JUDAS KISS: All I can think about is Arthur. His rage is fine as a blade, sharpened by the betrayal I have dealt him.

I’m not usually one for movies at all, let alone ones as gory as Goncharov, but Tumblr talked me into watching it and now I can’t help but wonder...
If Goncharov was a trilogy, would it be named:
Goncharov
Goncharov Again
Goncharov Forever
...or would it be named:
Goncharov
Gon-Again-charov
Gon-Forever-charov
Pick your faves in the tags besties I need to know. for science
