RESTRICT Act: The TikTok Ban is a Smokescreen for PATRIOT ACT 2.0. EDIT: KOSA and EARN IT Act are also back.
EDIT: So now we not only have RESTRICT to worry about, but we also have the EARN IT Act and the Kids Online Safety Act to deal with.
See here for my previous post on it. Fuck Blumenthal and Blackburn for trying to bring back two pro-censorship bills on top of the RESTRICT Act.
And Evan provides some insight on it.
EDIT: SO it turns out that Meta IS partly behind this, but it’s also due to Silicon Valley AND the government wanting more power and control. More information in the links provided below.
EDIT: List of Sponsors has been removed for easier reading. You can still find the list in the Link to the bill itself.
EDIT: Meta-related information apparently incorrect. Updated for accuracy.
----
Here is a link to the bill:
----
This RESTRICT Act is EXTREMELY authoritarian and violating privacy and the 1st Amendment. It’s being disguised as being about banning TikTok, but it’s VASTLY overreaching and basically gives far too much power to the government.
How bad is this bill? Bad enough that pretty much every side of the political spectrum opposes this bill once they took a closer look at it beyond the TikTok smokescreen.
The following points were articulated succinctly by tumblr user @logan-galbraith (used with permission):
This act, while saying it's to insure American's personal information will be safe from foreign powers, it goes much deeper than that.
It will give the United States Government the power to remove and ban ANY online service they deem "a security risk" while making it so they do not need just cause and do not need to clarify or release a public statement.
It allows them the power to gather American's data without our knowledge or consent and even force us to submit documentation for anything they wish.
It protects the government from scrutiny on this, and if you try to speak about it and inform people on what it ACTUALLY allows, they can claim it to be false information and charge you.
It prevents you from using a VPN as it's seen as a breach of information security, thus they can charge you. (Uncertain on accuracy. Crossed out until more concrete information is revealed)
Failure to abide by these "guidelines" can lead to a fine up to ONE MILLION DOLLARS and/or 20 YEARS in prison.
And above all it does NOTHING to prevent AMERICAN companies from collecting and selling your data.
It doesn't matter what political party you're on, because BOTH parties in office want this. This is not about sides. This is about the ENTIRE government stripping our rights away so they can keep lining their own pockets.
And that’s what the TikTok ban really is; a smokescreen for Congress to grab more power. This is the PATRIOT ACT VERSION 2. This has BIPARTISAN support and approval from the Biden Administration.
The scary part is that this bill is being approved under THIS administration...and it’s STILL incredibly bad.
What would end up happening if an openly fascist leader were brought into power? All of sudden, ANYONE and ANYTHING could become a target or considered an adversary under the flimsiest of pretenses.
What should YOU do?
Well, the same thing as past horribly invasive bills like EARN IT and KOSA; we make a LOT of noise, and get the word out.
While there has been increasing amounts of negative press and opposition on this bill, it’s hard to tell how much this has really slowed thing down. As such, getting the word out on how bad this bill is CRUCIAL. Make it EXTREMELY CLEAR that the TikTok ban is just a smokescreen, and that this is nakedly authoritarian and dangerously unconstitutional.
And PLEASE call your Senators.
Find your 2 senators numbers here.
Fax them, email them.
Tell them they MUST oppose this bill. Calmly make it clear to them that if they support this bill, then you will vote for someone else who doesn’t go along with this blatant act of authoritarian intent. CONTACT any major human rights and cybersecurity related organizations and let them know about this bill. Get this out to any local news groups that you can.
There’s some petitions by groups like ACLU: https://go.peoplepower.org/letter/tiktok-ban
They are betting on people being blissfully ignorant of this, that it’s “Just about a Silly App”, so they will not expect you to contact them about this. They are trying to weasel this through in order to give themselves more power, and we won’t be able to do anything about it without the risk of being jailed or censored.
Here’s a part of a rough script if you need one. Add in more based on what is relevant:
"Just to make you aware I do not support the TikTok ban and I do not support the Restrict Act. If this bill is passed I will not support any official who supports that bill. Instead, I will be spending all my time and energy supporting your opponents in the primaries."

I'm already doing this with KOSA but:

ATTENTION MINORS
I know you guys have been seeing the posts going around about Earn-It and KOSA and things of the like, and talking about how bad those things are. And you're right, they're really, really bad. But, you're not old enough to help participate in helping out, right, since you're a minor?
WRONG.
Minors out there who are concerned about these issues: YOU CAN HELP US. KOSA and CSAM specifically are acts to create widespread censorship and invasion of privacy to "protect kids," so if anything, your younger voices are stronger than ours!
I've compiled some resources for you guys to help out. Note that if you sound old enough, you do not have to disclose your age if you don't want to. The point is that there is a public outcry, not that you're under 18.
If you don't know what the bills are or what they do, here's a Doc that explains all that with links to different reading material where you can learn all about it there (note: as of posting this, the Restrict Act is not currently updated. Check back in the future for updates to the doc).
The two we really need to worry about right now are KOSA and CSAM.
KOSA is a bill being passed that would effectively let the government censor anything they want online, which can and will include minority voices, LGBTQ content, and anything they deem "unsafe" for kids (such as the suicide hotline).
CSAM is another law that preaches about protecting kids, but would actually be used to spy on everyone. It's a trojan horse.
There are a couple more, which are all covered more in-depth here on this site (scroll down):
Here's a few more resources for you guys, and then I'll get into how you guys can help!
KOSA
CSAM
EARN-It
(Light flash warning for this one, just in case)
youtube
RESTRICT Act
Alright, with all the reading out of the way, let's get into what to do.
How YOU can help!
Minors: you are not helpless. You are not powerless. The point is that there is a public outcry, and the fact that you are so young could be an advantage to stopping bills like KOSA and CSAM.
If your voice can pass as an adult's, YOU CAN CALL. If you don't think your voice can pass, YOU CAN EMAIL, TEXT, SIGN PETITIONS, and honestly, you MAY STILL be able to call.
Here's how calling works. It's gonna be scary the first time around, I know, but you've got this.
First: find out who your representatives are. This website right here makes that very easy. Go to the dropdown for your state and find it, and your two reps should automatically pop up.
Next, see if they're a Republican or a Democrat. This should be in parenthesis next to their names. Here's Michigan's and Mississippi's reps as examples of what that looks like:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
How you phrase your words will differ depending on the party they're in, this is important.
Next, you'll see under their names an address, phone number, and some bibliography. (I kept using the Michigan ones cuz I was already on their page, so if you're from Michigan, here's the numbers right here.)
Tumblr media
Let's get ready to call now.
Now, when I say "call," I don't mean exclusively by phone. You can also fax them or email them.
Here's a website you can use to fax them.
To find their email address, google it. [Name] email, and if they've got one, it should pop up there.
Now, the hard part: actually calling.
Before we go any further, reminder that these people are just that: people. They're not idols, they're not gods, they're not worth any more than you are. Dehumanize them as much as you need to in your head. They're not scary, they're human.
Now, for each bill, you can either make it all separate or keep all your words in one email, as it were. How you want to do this is up to you. But, if you're feeling lost for words, there are also scripts you can use as a base.
Here's an email to a Democrat about KOSA, for example:
And this one has emails for both sides:
The long and short of it goes like this:
Your name and something about you (I'm a retail worker) (I'm a minor) (I go to [name] school)
Explain why you're calling (I urge you to stop [bill])
Explain why the issue matters to YOU. (I am a minor, and pushing this law would do irreparable damage, not help us. Here's a bit of why.)
Ask the representative you're calling to help
Thank them for listening.
Keep it courteous- they'll be more likely to listen to you if you're calm and collected. I know emotions are high right now, and it's okay to let desperation in, but don't yell or scream at them, you'll only drive them away from trying to stop anything.
More than likely, you won't be speaking to that rep directly, but the message should still be clear and reach them.
If you're faxing or emailing, there's more room to go off about issues in more depth, since there isn't someone on the other end of the line. You can say as much as you'd like, but still try to keep it polite.
You guys are powerful, and your young voices can add to this fight. You do not have to be an adult to call something unjust. Stand with us. Together, your voices will make us stronger.

What's really crazy to me is that, if Restrict Act, EARN IT Act, and KOSA manage to pass, then TikTok of all things will have officially done more damage to the internet than any site I could think of. I mean, as far as I know, even 4Chan has never caused so many problems that it actually led to the censorship and surveillance of the entire internet.

I mentioned this when I was musing the other day, but it is genuinely wild that the OFMD fandom has somehow gotten this divided over Izzy and Edward's character arcs given that they basically don't exist yet.
Season 1 was like 5 hours of tv, which is barely anything by tv standards, and it had to spend that time mostly on Stede's arc to speedrun him from intro-Stede to hero-Stede. Plus getting you introduced to the ensemble cast enough to care about them, getting you introduced to the concept of BlackBonnet on a "this is how they are compatible and why you should root for them once we start on the struggles" level, going on a detour to give Jim a fairly decent subplot arc, generally just being funny...
I mean, at the end of the season Izzy has gone through a complete life collapse that still only really encompasses the inciting events of his story in the series, and Edward is a main character but he didn't shift from mostly static character setup to actual arc progression until, like, the start of 1x09? And he had to split time pretty heavily with Stede so that comes out to what? 30 minutes, max?
There is a reason that a lot of my speculation as to why Izzy isn't a bigoted villain leans so heavily on show themes, genre, and doylist questions of "why not be worse?" And it's because at the moment Izzy isn't far enough on his arc to have definitively committed to a "good" or "bad" arc direction. There's just not enough content. Neither side has enough evidence purely from Izzy's character and actions to say this is where he's going, vs you could totally do that with Stede.
But I do think we have enough evidence to compare what any Izzy option would require from the writing and what they would say thematically, and I think evil bigot Izzy is both poor thematic messaging and lacking the kind of setup I feel they would need to have done by now, given how limited the show is on planned time. If they wanted him evil, they did not have the episodes to waste on close ups of his emotional devastation or using plausible surface level explanations that sidestep the actual messages they supposedly wanted him to send. He should have just skipped over that bit and been Evil™ like the Badmintons.

“Stop Internet Censorship” Master List
The following is a master list for all of the major Internet Censorship and Surveillance Bills between 2022 to 2023, with the most major bills that are currently active posted below. They will each link to the Tumblr posts that I have made in the past related to them, with all of the relevant information associated.
This was made because I feel people need to get a sense for just how interconnected they really are, how much Congress and third parties are trying to desperately gain full control and access to our information and silencing anything they don’t want to see and hear, and having a centralized hub of information for them will make it easier for people to find them.
The Major Bills:
EARN IT Act: 2022 version of EARN IT Act
2023 version of EARN IT Act (No text yet, but it’s pretending to be about preventing child abuse online this time)
Enigma2Me Post on EARN IT Act
     fullhalalalchemist Post on EARN IT
Condemnation of the EARN IT Act 2020 Coalition Letter
     STOP EARN IT Act LINKTREE
Engadget: EARN IT Act reintroduced for the Third Time
------
Kids Online Safety Act: Current Draft of 2023 KOSA bill
Enigma2Me Post on Kids Online Safety Act
     STOP KOSA LinkTree
------
RESTRICT Act: Read Bill Here.
       Enigma2Me Post On RESTRICT Act
      LoganGalbraith’s Post on RESTRICT Act
Truthout Article 4/02/2023: Restrict Act Critics Call the Far-Reaching “TikTok Ban” Bill a “Patriot Act 2.0”
------
STOP CSAM Act:
Electronic Frontier Foundation: Take Action on STOP CSAM/EARN IT
TechDirt Post Against STOP CSAM Act
------
So if you’ve seen the above, you’re probably asking: What can we do about it?
1) Spread the Word online!
Twitter Hashtags
For Earn It: #EARNITAct, #STOPTheEARNITAct, #NoEarnItAct
For KOSA: #KOSA, #KidsOnlineSafetyAct, STOPKOSA
For RESTRICTAct: #RESTRICTAct, #STOPRESTRICTAct
2) PLEASE call your Senators.
Find your 2 senators numbers here. Fax them, email them. Tell them they MUST oppose this bill. Calmly make it clear to them that if they support this bill, then you will vote for someone else who doesn’t go along with this blatant act of authoritarian intent.
3) CONTACT any major human rights and cybersecurity related organizations and let them know about this bill. Get this out to any local news groups that you can.
The following Google Doc contains a list of every major organization we could think of to contact, and will be updated as we find more allies in the fight against censorship and surveillance.
ANTI-CENSORSHIP MASTER LIST
Also Contact the organizations on these 2020 letters to get them to publicly speak out against the EARN IT Act like they did back then.
But for those who want to have official organizations to work with (and who usually have petitions except TechDirt), the following usually are up to date on info:
Electronic Frontier Foundation
Fight For the Future
Techdirt

All American school children should be taught:
1) how to contact their congressional representatives
2) that they can and should message them about anything
3) that they are not celebrities, but public servants
We were done a disservice by not learning this and it’s helped cultivate this ridiculous notion of them being untouchable and their opinions absolute.

Hey everyone. The restrict shit is not as it seems. It's literally horrible, go read up on it. It is a violation of our rights, actually. Anywho, this country is going to shit. Its literally on the brink of collapse, imo. We're going backwards, not forwards. This country is nothing. I wish I had not been born here. I have less rights than a fucking dog. The apocalypse is coming, but it aint gonna be zombies. Its us. Our 'leaders' who are good for nothing shitbags. I hate our country. Its pathetic. We're going to die here.
