Authorities have released an image of the simulated weapon officials say NYPD cops encountered a robbery suspect holding when they stormed a T-Mobile store in Queens this week, discharging 42 rounds in 11 seconds.
The picture released Thursday shows an item that from any distance could appear to be a real gun; it is black and about the same size with a ribbed grip. The barrel says Colt 1911 TARGET, a quick Google search for which indicates the product is available for online purchase on sites like Amazon and Walmart.
Tumblr media
It's what NYPD Det. Brian Simonsen, 42, and his sergeant, Matthew Gorman, saw the suspect, 27-year-old Christopher Ransom, holding when they responded to a 911 call about a masked man with a gun at the phone store in Richmond Hill around dinnertime on Tuesday, officials have said. The two officers were working on an unrelated case in the area, but responded since it was nearby.
Also responding: six uniformed NYPD officers, authorities said. NYPD service members fired a total of 42 rounds in 11 seconds at the scene. Simonsen, a married 19-year NYPD veteran, was hit once in the chest. He later died. Gorman was hit once in the leg; he remained hospitalized early Thursday but was stable.
8 cops show up, start random firing at a black dude with a toy gun and shoot each other. now he's held responsible for the death and injuries.
The suspect, a 27-year-old man with an extensive criminal record, was armed with an imitation firearm, O’Neill said. He was wounded and is hospitalized in stable condition.
“Make no mistake about it, friendly fire aside, it is because of the actions of the suspect that Det. Simonsen is dead,” O’Neill said.
I think maybe its the fault of the people shooting at their co-workers that the co-worker is shot. but I'm not a cop, I don't have the advanced training in murdering people so what do I know.

The comic posted here illustrates one of the basic truths about accessibility, which is that when accessibility needs are accommodated, everyone is accommodated.
When a filmmaker makes a movie or TV program that has no strobe effects or photosensitivity issues, they are making a movie or TV program for everyone. When they use strobe effects, it is purposefully and carelessly exclusionary to a percentage of viewers.
The only strobe effects that occur in nature are lightning and the fast flapping of wings on animals. In every other case, there are alternatives. Police cars (and this applies in real life too) can switch to a fade-in-fade-out mode instead of a strobe mode. One of very few movies to get rapid-firing firearms right was the opening robbery sequence of The Dark Knight, which realistically did not use bright muzzle flashes. Even using harsh strobe lights to simulate lightning is more intense than nature actually makes it.
We already put strict content warnings on our entertainment. Movie rating systems all give warnings about who the intended audience of a movie should be, and whether content unsuitable for children is in the movie. None of the reasons for which we assign an R or 18+ rating to a movie are as dangerous as strobe lights. Nobody has ever had to go to the hospital because they heard foul language, or saw a certain part of someone's body, but there have been plenty of cases of physical medical issues caused by movies and TV programs, including ones made for children or families.
If our content creators are not going to do better, then we should at least be pushing for better warnings about what is safe to watch and what is not.
Image ID: a comic of a man shoveling snow off of some stairs in front of what is likely a school, with the wheelchair ramp still covered in snow. A group of children wait for him to be done shoveling the stairs. One of the children, in a wheelchair, asks "Could you please shovel the ramp?" The man replies "All these other kids are waiting to use the stairs. When I get through shoveling them off, then I will clear the ramp for you." The child in the wheelchair responds with "But if you shovel the ramp, we can all get in!." A caption underneath the image reads "Clearing a path for people with special needs clears the path for everyone!"

Training Day
Summary - A short fic in which Spencer administers your on-the-job training (not edited xoxo).
Warnings: spencer reid X bau reader, mentions of guns, mild swearing, BAU level-violence implied, fluff at the end
Tumblr media
You ducked behind the nearest wall, doing your best to make sure the floor didn’t creak under your sifting weight. You adjusted your vest carefully, making sure your most vulnerable parts were covered before gently cocking your weapon, head resting against the floral wallpaper behind you. The target’s footsteps approached, nearing you as they entered the narrow hallway to your right. You made a split decision, pulling away from the wall and slipping quickly around the corner.
“FBI. Drop your weapon and put your hands in the air.” You trained your firearm on the figure before you. One of his arms was holding a gun to the head of a victim who he was dragging along with him. The figure didn’t respond, instead choosing to cock his gun. You tried once more. “Drop the weapon or you will not walk out of here alive.”
The shadow in the hallway said nothing, and you made up your mind. Raising your weapon, you fired, hitting him squarely in the head.
Suddenly, the lights burst on around you, making yourself and your target groan at the sudden intrusion of light.
“Good practice, YN,” Spencer slipped out of the observation chamber, offering you a thumbs up. He scribbled a few notes on the clipboard in his hands. “However, you know the objective of this training was to take him alive.”
You sighed, looking at your target. Your coworker Anderson stood before you, his helmet splattered with the paint pellet you’d fired at his head to free his ‘victim.’
“What would you suggest I have done? He had the victim at gunpoint and cocked his weapon.” You looked skeptically at Spencer, who sighed.
“Frankly, I’m not sure. Anderson, maybe you should set up a better scenario for this particular training,” Spencer mused. He offered you a playful smile as Anderson groaned in irritation.
“With all due respect, Dr. Reid, I’m following protocol by challenging Agent Y/N with this training,” Anderson mouthed, his agitation clear in his voice. “Maybe you and your team should work on adjusting to real-life scenarios rather than heroic fantasies.”
Spencer frowned, stepping back into the observation room and grabbing a stack of papers off his desk. He hummed as he thumbed through the pages, murmuring a soft “mhm” when he found the one he was looking for.
Spencer held up the paper to Anderson and yourself before looking down to read it. “Agent Anderson, it says here you scored 63/100 on your last training assessment in this particular scenario.”
You winced in secondhand embarrassment as Anderson flushed a deep shade of crimson. He began mumbling under his breath before he threw off his dirty helmet and stormed out of the training room.
You watched Anderson leave while Spencer set the papers back in the observation room. “Don’t get me wrong, Spence,” you began as you stripped off your vest, “He’s an ass, but don’t you think that was a bit harsh? He’s right. I do need to be better prepared for those real field scenarios.”
Spencer sighed, shaking his head. “Nothing can really prepare us for what happens out there. What matters is, you got the victim out alive. That’s all we can ask for.”
You nodded. “Well, what was my final score, Doc?”
“I had to deduct a few points since the unsub wasn’t taken alive. However, you did great. You checked all your blind spots, made sure you were covered, and made multiple attempts to disarm him. I figure you deserved at least a 93.”
Your eyebrows raised in surprise. “93? I’m flattered, but that’s the highest score anyone on the team has gotten in this simulation since-”
“Since me?” Spencer mused, a smirk playing on the corner of his lips. “Yeah, I know. However, when I did the simulation, I ended up ‘shot’ in the arm. You left unscathed, which earned you some extra points. A 93 is suitable, and gives you room to improve.”
“Thank you, Spencer. I hope that you’re not doing this out of some kind of favoritism. Just because we’re teammates doesn’t mean you have to be nice when scoring me.”
Spencer shook his head. “I’m not playing favorites. Besides, if I was, I wouldn’t be favoring you because we’re teammates.” He lowered his voice, leaning into you, “I have plenty of other reasons to favor you of all people.”
You blushed as Spencer pressed a soft kiss to your forehead. Though the two of you had been keeping your relationship under wraps for professional reasons, you couldn’t help but have some tame displays of affection when the two of you were alone. He wrapped his arms around you, and you did the same, breathing in the scent of his cologne.
Just as you were about to pull away, the door behind you both swung open and Anderson stumbled into the room.
“Dr. Reid, I’ll have you know that-” Anderson’s voice caught in his throat when he saw you and Spencer pressed against each other, arm in arm. “Well, I… Since when do you two-” Anderson stumbled through his statements, flustered as he tried to piece together the scene before him. “I can’t believe this.” With that, your fellow agent turned and stumbled out of the training room.
“He’s so articulate, too.” Spencer joked, looking back at you.
You furrowed your brow. “You’re not the least bit concerned that he’s going to tell the entire office about what he just saw?”
Spencer considered this for a moment before shaking his head. A mischievous smile played on the corners of his lips. He pressed another soft kiss to your forehead before letting out a sigh, looking back at the door that Anderson just left through. “Not if he doesn’t want the entire office to know he can’t pass field training.”

Do you have any thoughts on Weaverdice? I haven't looked into it meself but I heard it's like a very bastardized version of Worm. Which is weird, because didn't Wildbow himself make Weaverdice?
weaverdice is really bad but unlike many ttrpgs i think are bad i think it's bad in novel and interesting and valuable ways. it's bad because wildbow clearly does not have the skill of 'game design' and so it consists of about two dozen entirely separate mechanics with basically no connective tissue -- it's in a weird spot where wildbow's mode of thinking about TTRPGs in general is heavily simulationist but then the ruleset is nowhere near heavy (or complete, it's on it's third edition now and none of the editions have been finished) enough to actually carry that simulation forward so it ends up being very fiddly and confusing to very little payoff in terms of delivering on the Simulationist Feel for a lot of people who like that thing. like lots of rules that are like 'here are the specific stats and prices of several different types of Gun' like what you might find in a GURPS manual but none of the underlying detailed rules about firearms and accuracy that make those stats valent in GURPs.
it's definitely got a systematized take on powers and generation that doesn't really retrofit to what was going on in worm, which is probably why you've heard it's 'bastardized'-- however i will conditionally defend this take by saying that for one of the core (and imo best and most interesting and most worth stealing and innovating on) mechanics of the game, which is table character generation with no player choice involved, this systematized approach is actually useful and necessary. it's silly that it gets applied outside that context, but i do think that within the context of a table generating powers for each other it's a pretty good way to go about it.
it has all the classic problems of someone's first TTRPG project--the math is absolutely fucked beyond reasonable repair, the scope of the project vastly outweighs the amount of time and work available to be put into it, the creator has read/played a limited number of TTRPGs and so has access to a limited creative toolkit to express things that those toolkits aren't really designed for--i definitely wouldn't recommend playing it. but it's interesting to read and think about at least!

ficlet: W.A.R!Enjolras's birthday party
roughly a bajillion years ago, i said i'd write donation fics for people who gave to abortion related causes. i flagged out about halfway through but i'm back, baby, and i'm determined to fill those requests.
this is for @sharki-leftishark, who was curious to see a birthday celebration in the W.A.R universe, either enjolras or grantaire. so today i bring to you enjolras's birthday, following the events of W.A.R. i never did figure out the month in which this story takes place, so please feel free to mentally set it whenever your own zodiac headcanons dictate.
ETA: and many thanks to @consultingreaders and @give-me-a-minute-to-think for the speedy and helpful beta!
Senior year
Maybe three-quarters of the way through opening the presents, Grantaire realizes that Enjolras is saving Grantaire’s gift for last. Enjolras tosses aside the paper from the hardbound journal that Marius got him, thanks Marius with real earnestness even though it’s the third variation of a notebook he’s received today, starts to reach for Grantaire’s sloppily wrapped bundle, sees the tag, and then his hands stutter instead toward a shiny package that turns out to be from Joly.
The package contains some sort of board game. Courfeyrac insists that the game is “Risk in space, it is so clearly Risk in space—we’ve been over this, people. Enjolras is not allowed within ten yards of a pretend army, remember? We voted?” and then Joly waves his cane at Courfeyrac, shouting, “People change! Also it’s a cooperative game, we’d be harnessing the laser eyes for the power of friendship and community!” and a lively debate ensues.
Grantaire follows some of it. He’s mostly trying not to think about how Enjolras, who believes in self-discipline and delayed gratification and all that shit, apparently considers Grantaire’s contribution to be the grand finale of this whole experience. Enjolras, who loves his friends so much. It’s heady to consider: the height of Enjolras’s expectations and the chance of maybe not meeting them, a quick swoosh up and then down. Not that Enjolras would ever be a dick about it or anything, but they’ve been dating, for-real dating, for months now, and if Enjolras doesn’t love the present, Grantaire will probably know.
After a lifetime, the presents-opening resumes. Feuilly has set up an appointment for Enjolras to interview a real-life union leader. Combeferre contributes a tidy set of books by someone named bell hooks. Courfeyrac’s offering is a gift certificate to the impossibly cool indie movie theater two towns over as well as a bubble gun blower, which immediately sparks off another round of debate.
(“Oh, so fictitious simulated pretend armies are verboten, but you get him a firearm?” Joly manages between laughs.
“One that shoots soap bubbles, you maniac!” Courfeyrac shoots back.
“At least it would be a clean kill,” muses Combeferre, and Eponine’s eye roll would be slightly more convincing if they hadn’t clearly slipped away during the division of the birthday cake to make out.)
And then, well. And then it’s Grantaire’s turn. To see his present opened, not to sneak off to swap spit with his boyfriend, which come to think of it sounds infinitely better, and not just because Enjolras’s dedication to self-improvement extends to learning how to kiss Grantaire to the point of incoherence in under five minutes.
Enjolras unwraps the paper carefully and shakes out the fabric. It’s a T-shirt, emblazoned with the words “ENJOLRAS 2024: ARE YOU BRAVE ENOUGH TO CHANGE THE WORLD?”
“For the campaign,” says Grantaire. “I did the math and that’s the first year you can run for president.”
“You need to be thirty-five,” says Enjolras. A smile is flickering at the corner of his mouth.
“I know,” Grantaire tells him. “I looked it up because I had to know the first year I could vote for you. I cracked open my Government textbook for you, so like. Feel honored.”
“We had Government last year,” Enjolras seems to feel compelled to point out. “When did you—”
Grantaire can feel his face burning. He’s not even sure why, really. “Last March,” he says.
“When you first started pretending to date,” Musichetta fills in with relish. Now that it’s public knowledge among their friends, she brings it up whenever she can.
“I thought you were maybe out of your mind,” says Grantaire, “but like. I don’t know. You’re clearly gonna be somebody. And, uh. You had my vote. And still do, obviously.”
Enjolras is turning a little red too. “You should probably see what the other candidates’ positions are before you make that call,” he mumbles.
Grantaire’s heart soars. He shakes his head. “No way, I’m a single-issue voter and my one issue is ‘how much is this guy like Enjolras?’”
Enjolras ducks his head. He lays the T-shirt down carefully, next to the pile of books and notebooks. He opens his arms. Enjolras, who, now that the dating is real, isn’t really about public displays of affection.
“This is so sweet I think I’m going to actually throw up,” says Eponine as Grantaire steps into the hug. He squeezes hard. Enjolras squeezes harder.
“I like you so much,” Enjolras murmurs into the side of his face. “Also, you’re the one who’s out of your mind, nobody just runs for president—”
“Sure,” says Grantaire, “You gotta be twenty-five to run for House of Reps, so 2014’s the first year you’d be eligible. Now, U.S. Senate, you need to be thirty, so you can run in 2018, when it just so happens a seat will be open—”
Enjolras kisses him on the mouth.

i dont really infodump in general at all but im doing it cus i need some ideas off my chest. do you freak with angst? perhaps an unhappy ending?
// sdr2 chapter 5+ending spoilers ig. kuzuhina au baybee
ok im, pretty positive that if there's two people left then neither of them can get out together and just split the prize bc that'd be pretty bullshit (idek if they ever cleared it up, imo tho one man standing would be the most logical)
so what if nagito DID bomb the island, taking everyone out?
fyi ive written this nearly entirely so im sparing u with a little summary(this is not a summary)
so bombs are spread all around the islands forreal this time. after nagito's video, a chain of them went off right as they were running out of the plushie factory, barely on time. everything started crumbling around them, and all the others were downed one by one, either caught in the explosions or crushed underneath falling structures
but somehow haj and fuyu survived, the others killed right in front of their own eyes. but they ran away, retreating to the warehouse, to which they find nagitos body. and the realization hits– it’s just them now, they’re the only ones left, and neither of them know what to do
im sure u can imagine hajime was fucking RAGING at that point just breaking down and stressing out
they didnt know what to do, they couldnt do anything, but fuyuhiko was here, so the first thing they did was to get off the island since the fire was spreading. from there, they wander around, hoping maybe then something would happen, but there wasn't any sight of monokuma or monomi. all they could do was look onto the destroyed islands, before they inevitably wait in a safe spot at the military base, officially at a dead end
they just kinda sit there for a while, not knowing what to do. but they cant wait here forever, and fuyuhiko knows what he has to do
eventually, he hands hajime a pistol(acquired from the truck of firearms outside), and asks him to kill him so it could finally be over
obviously hajime refuses at first, but fuyuhiko begs him, because he isn’t a good person and he doesn’t have much else to live for, while hajime has singlehandedly saved everyones asses, he deserved to escape more than anyone else here. by now, hajime was crying, but they’ve been at this dead end for so long, he knew he had to do it or else they’d never be getting off this island. so hajime just holds em close and says his final goodbyes (maybe a kiss teehee) before making it quick for him
pulling that trigger hurts him more than anything, ANYWAY BOOM hajime is the winner, simulation ends
also postgame babey; when things end here, hajime would wake up from the simulation, and since he never got to choose his own future alongside everyone else, he wakes up as izuru kamukura. he's not entirely empty i think, izuru and hajime still would have "merged" afterwards, so it'd moreso just be hajime somewhere in there half of the time just mourning but its deeply suppressed, but thats a WHOOLE thing to get into. he just chills

"Jaune Gets A Gun AU - Day 2" Titanfall 2 - Various (Pt1)
Inspired by @howlingday's RU-JA-GUN-CON
????/????: Customers! Welcome!
Tumblr media
Jaune: Eh?
????: Ignore Droz... I'm Davis thank you for coming over.
Droz: and Welcome to the 6-4!
Davis: We're not the 6-4 anymore.
Droz: Once 6-4 always 6-4
Pyrrha: Are we interrupting something? We can always come ba...
Droz/Davis: NO! Please stay...
Davis: We have guns... because we're at a gun show, obviously... hehe.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Pyrrha/Ruby/Jaune: (Thinking) Okay... if we slowly walk away...
Tumblr media
Tiny Tina: (Thinking) Oh, these guys seem like fun!
Jaune: Alright. I'm looking for a ranged option, I mostly use a Sword and Shield...
Ruby: It needs to be easily maintained...
Pyrrha: Simple to operate...
Tiny Tina: And blows things up!
Pyrrha/Ruby: What? No!
Droz: Well, we have these...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Tiny Tina: And these blow things up?
Droz: Some of the best Anti-Titan weapons we have... the Mag Launcher fires Magnetic Grenades. Great for landing hits on Spectres, Titans, or anything that magnets can be drawn to.
Jaune: Grimm aren't really magnetic...
Droz/Davis: Grimm?
Ruby: Yeah, Grimm. Enemy of human and faunus kind? Sound familiar?
Droz: (Whispering) Where are we again?
Davis: (Whispering) Rembrant... no, that's not it... Remnant.
Jaune: You know we can hear you.
Droz: Sorry, you travel as much as we do, and all the jump locations start kind of blurring together.
Jaune: What about the rocket launcher.
Davis: The Archer. Great fire and forget weapon.
Jaune: That would work for me...
Pyrrha: Jaune, you get one shot, and then have to reload... and let me guess it locks onto electronic signatures? Grimm, don't have those.
Davis: Well, we also have this.
Tumblr media
Ruby/Tiny Tina: And this is?
Davis: Sidewinder Micro Missile Launcher.
Ruby/Tiny Tina: Ohhhhhh!
Pyrrha: How about we look at something more manageable, and less likely to hurt Jaune when he uses it.
Droz: (Rubbing the back of his neck) Well, we do have a line of antipersonnel weapons. They can definitely take down grimm. You can see them just over there.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ruby: They look sort of old.
Davis: Time tested and true. Solid construction, worry free operation. Perfect for a newbie or an expert.
Droz: But DON'T take our word for it. Try them out and see the difference that these fine firearms can make for your kit!
Jaune: Okay, but where...?
Davis points to a pair of what appeared to be fully enclosed simulation pods.
Droz: Climb in. Chose your gear, and try them out. Full body feed back. So you will get a TRUE feel on which of these babies works best for you.
Jaune: Okay, I'm game.
Davis: Anyone else?
Pyrrha: I'll do it.
Droz: This way, please.
Ruby and Tiny Tina watched as Pyrrha and Jaune stepped into the sim pods and the doors closed. They watched carefully as the one called Droz opened up a tablet and input some keystrokes.
Davis: (Whispering) So?
Droz: (Whispering) He's a little rough, but he learns quick. He could be a Gen 3.
Davis: (Whispering) What about her?
Droz: (Whispering) Gen 5.
Davis: Shi...!
Ruby: Swear Jar!
Davis: Er... what?
Tiny Tina: What's this Gen stuff you, two, were talking about?
Droz: Gen stuff?
Davis: (Whispering) Do you think they...
Tiny Tina: Yes, we can hear you.
Droz: Cr...ud.
Tiny Tina: (Crossing her arms, her pistol in hand) So what is Gen?
Droz: (Rubs back of his neck) It stands for Generation. The more Generations a pilot goes through, the stronger and better they are. Right now, the young fella could be a Gen 3, the lady a Gen 5.
Ruby: Okay... that explains very little.
Davis: Your friends would make exceptional pilots... especially after we put them through ReGENeration.
Tiny Tina/Ruby: You what now?
Droz: Be for the best. They are perfect for the 6-4.
Ruby: NO! You can't recruit Jaune! He's already Enlisted with the Mobile Infantry!
Davis: Cool! We've never ReGENed a Trooper before!
Tiny Tina: No, no, no, no....
Droz: Let's do it!
Ruby and Tiny Tina make a lunge for Droz who just falls backwards to the floor letting the pair of young woman sail over him, as he tapped a button on his tablet.
(Okay... this one is getting split, because if I continue it is going to be super long, if it's already not too long. Stay tuned for the conclusion!)

How did that green key save your life?
When I say it saved the lives of "me and mine" I am being facetious. The green key belongs to the "God Gun" that is used along with the U.S. Army multiple integrated laser engagement system, or MILES gear. The God Gun can either kill or revive people and equipment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
With the MILES harness there is a key slot that will accept one of two keys, the green God Key and the yellow key that comes with your firearms laser transmitter. Green stops the beep and revives you the yellow just stops the beep.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When a Soldier wearing MILES gear gets hit by the opposing combatants (Or fratricide, intentional or unintentional.) laser it sets off an alarm on your harness. That beep can break your brain if it's not turned off in short order so you will use the yellow key in your laser transmitter to stop it until an "Observer" can rekey you with a God Key. Below is one of the greatest examples I can think of.
youtube
Every now and again a member of the E-4 Mafia will get their hands on a green God key and hold on to it like its Isildur's Bane. ("My Precious! O my Precious!") They use it in total secrecy and only pass it's blessed usefulness on when they ETS. I did not get mine until I was and E-5, I was tasked to be the Training Support NCO for our Battalion. I was the schlub that had to draw things like MILES hear, graphic training aids, and just about anything not bought and stored at Battalion and Company level. When you turned in MILES gear they accounted for every single key, yellow and green. At one point the Training Support Center on Fort Riley had an "open house", if you were on the signature card you could come get all kinds of cool stuff for free. They were moving and were not moving all the stuff inside the building. The best part for commanders is none of the items were going on their property books. I picked up two complete UXO (Unexploded ordnances kits.), two full Moulage Kits (Casualty Simulation Kits), a dozen "rubber duck" AK47's, RPG-7's, RPK's and M16's and boxes of graphic training aids. When I was back at Battalion sorting through all the stuff I found the God Key in a moulage kit. That green key kept people and vehicles alive in the field, at NTC and JRTC for the next 15 years.

Video reportedly shows Israeli forces directing unarmed Gazan civilians to stage gun surrender A video reportedly shows Israeli soldiers instructing unarmed Palestinian civilians to simulate the surrender of firearms. In the footage, an Israeli soldier is heard giving directions in Arabic: ‘Grab the gun I gave you, but don’t shoot it, we don’t want trouble, walk slowly and leave it on the ground on the other side.’ The man identified in the video is Moin Qeshta Al-Masry, owner of an aluminium workshop in Gaza. Al-Masry was among those who sought refuge in Al-Khalifa school in Beit Lahia and was reportedly taken along with others.

🚨Identity Confirmed: Munir Qeshta al-Masry, a small business owner of an aluminium workshop in Beit Lahia. NEVER a Hamas member! This is depraved on many levels; forcing civilians to strip & stand almost completely naked at gun point & filming/posting this for a victory image🧵 — Muhammad Shehada (@muhammadshehad2) December 9, 2023

Disinformation & propaganda: Two videos published by the IDF show two different takes, meaning they may have forced the man they call Abu Ibrahim to walk forward twice with an air rifle. Dude
Tumblr media
Dude is an unused enemy that has 20000 HP but can only attack for 10 damage. Probably intended to be a boss considering its high HP, and is also part of an unused enemy formation called Dudetroop, which includes Dude, existing enemies Ghost, Vital Statue and Clawman, as well as the Gremlin and Gremlin Master, which are two other unused enemies.

FN F2000
Tumblr media
H3VR is a VR gun range simulator esque game featuring a lot of (often user requested) firearms. The FN F2000 was often requested but never implemented as the main developer had a personal dislike of it after shooting it IRL, but mostly as a running joke. This came to a head with the Meatmas 2019 trailer, showing an F2000 in the game only to serve as fuel for a fireplace. The developer has explained that this appearance involved a fully functional gun implemented in the game, but immediately after filming the trailer it was entirely deleted, going so far as to throw away the password of the burner account used to purchase the model. Since then, the only way to get the F2000 in the game is mods.

Armor (Morohada-Nugi-Dō Gusoku)
Japanese, 17th century
This armor is a rare example of an en suite armor of the morohada-nugi-dō gusoku type (with a cuirass that simulates a bare-chested torso) from the early Edo period (17th century). Warfare in Japan changed dramatically throughout the 16th century, with the introduction of firearms and the utilization of larger contingents of troops. This necessitated significant changes in the design of armor worn on the battlefield, including the introduction of bullet resistant materials and creation of more distinctive armor forms that would aid in making individual troops more recognizable in the chaos of battle. The morohada-nugi-dō gusoku is one type of so-called “modern armor” (tōsei-gusoku), developed during this transitional period. Wearing a cuirass in the form of a bare-chested torso was not only a means of distinguishing oneself on the battlefield, it was also designed to intimidate the enemy.

Eureka: A lot of bang for your buck!
Tumblr media
As mentioned in an earlier post, the rulebook for Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy is on the longer side of the indie-TTRPG spectrum, coming in at about 230 pages at the time of writing this.
The rulebook dedicates about the first 90 pages to what we would probably call the “core gameplay”: That is, looking for clues, gathering evidence, drawing conclusions, talking to people, making plans, etc. as well as what each Skill and Trait does and how to create a normal player character.
The next 75 or so pages are dedicated entirely to combat.
Characters are fairly fragile in Eureka compared to most TTRPG PCs—they might even be more fragile than Call of Cthulhu PCs—and this serves to realistically and organically discourage a shoot-first-question-later style of play. However, we knew that making the PCs this easy to kill meant that we had to give the combat systems within the game a lot of depth to match, to give the PCs and their players a good degree of agency in the fight, or else they’d just be going along until wham the party is dead after one bad roll and it’s game over before they know it.
The combat rules in Eureka are deep but not overly complex. It’s less about determining the exact right turn to utilize a special ability that synergizes with the rest of the party’s special abilities, and more about positioning, planning around the environment, and striking first. This still uses the same 2D6 system as everything else—except for when automatic firearms come into play, then it’s D12s for a little extra randomness and because it’s easier to roll 10 D12s than 10 pairs of D6s—so you won’t need to really learn a whole new set of rules just to have a fight. Just keep track of the effective range of each category of firearm and how many bullets your character has left!
I’m actually personally very proud of Eureka’s firearm combat rules. They manage to create a very realistic simulation of a real shootout, organically encouraging realistic tactics and strategy without devolving into a slow grind where every character’s turn takes five minutes of math and re-checking the rulebook to resolve. After that, there’s a brief set of instructions on how to convert an adventure module not originally made for it to work well with the Eureka system. This chapter is only a few pages long because it really is that simple!
And then the last section in the book is dedicated to making and handling PCs that are a bit...less normal. This is about 60 pages, and covers the bulk of Eureka’s actual supernatural lore, and instructions on how to use that lore to create supernatural player characters that fit into that lore.
We’ve gone into this more in-depth in another earlier post, but let me give a simple rundown anyway: There is no “masquerade” in the world of Eureka, no grand conspiracy by either the mundane government nor a secret supernatural government to cover up the existence of vampires and werewolves and fairies and the like, in fact there is no secret supernatural government. Supernatural creatures are simply so rare as to mainly just fly right under the radar of most modern science, with actual sightings being considered the stuff of tabloid trash and unscientific sensationalism by most academic minds. So obscure are these instances of the supernatural that a vampire might not even believe in werewolves, or a werewolf in vampires. They may have even never met another one of their kind in-person. As for why these individuals don’t just get on camera and tell the world that they exist... well, the ones they have the less dangerous magical powers could usually be shown-up by a mundane stage magician in Vegas. Yeah right you can start fires with your mind, I bet you just have a remote ignition switch in your pocket!
And then the ones that have more impressive magical powers, like literally transforming completely into a bat, well, those guys tend to also eat people, so it’s really in their best interest to keep that to themselves, in case anyone comes asking questions about what happened to the neighbors and all those delivery guys....
Perhaps one of the most interesting mechanics here is how supernatural characters like these must not only keep their secrets from the world at large, but the rest of the party too! These PCs’ supernatural status is a secret from everyone except their player and the game master, and they must find ways to dodge their supernatural weaknesses, exert their powers, and take a few bites out of a victim all without alerting anyone else in the party or at the table to their true nature.
