The Blood Falls

One of the most incredible natural phenomena on the planet is found in the Dry Valleys of McMurdo in Antarctica. It was discovered by Australian geologist Thomas Griffith Taylor and it has now intrigued scientists for a century.

Red liquid gushes out from inside of the mass of ice until it flows into Lake Bonney. The water should freeze, but it does not, although the temperature in the place can reach -60 degrees Celsia. The content of the lake that feeds the falls is three time saltier than seawater and is extremely rich in iron. The blood effect occurs when the lake's salty, iron-rich water seeps through fissures and falls into Lake Bonney. When this liquid comes in contact with the air and becomes oxidized, it turns red.

The area is accessible only by a boat, or a helicopter.

Ok this is my blood falls Antarctica iron lung theory

OK so there’s this insane glacial landform in Antarctica called blood falls, and it’s called that becuase it looks like the snout of the Taylor glacier (where it flows from) is bleeding.

A lot of pictures saturate the colours to make it look REALLY red but I think this picture shows it pretty well.

In reality it’s actually the result of a sub glacial water pool that has abnormally high amounts of iron and salt in it, making the water that leaks out look a coppery red. Because the Taylor glacier is kind of known for its ancient and extremely salty seawater it’s trapped inside of itself and also because it flows into the McMurdo dry valley, the water doesn’t freeze and instead is expelled to the surface as a terrifying looking wound. This is super cool and awesome on its own BUT scientists have obviously done extra research on this super salty iron rich water and have found that there’s no oxygen at all in there, but there are extremophile microbes living in it that have developed the ability to metabolise iron and sulfur which is the only case of that found ever.

So why does this relate to popular indie game iron lung? when I saw iron lung and learned about blood falls my first fucking thought was “ok what if the planet isn’t covered in a blood ocean, but actually ancient super iron rich glacier melt that collects over millions of years and floods the craters of the moons somehow, and the monsters you find in the ocean are evolved extremophiles who have spent millions and millions of years in isolation and the moon is completely uninhabitable because the ocean is so salty and iron rich. I’ll be honest, I don’t know a ton about or if there is more complex biology/geography to the game so I may have missed something, and it doesn’t fully add up because creatures living in complete isolation probably wouldn’t be very hostile like they are in the game.

BUT if there was a comparison to a “blood ocean” in the real world, I think blood falls is pretty close. And the fact this exists at all is so fucking cool to me

An enormous tree house emerged. It was made of wood and had wide porches all around. Windows—old and new—were flung open to let the crisp mountain breeze through. The more modern windows folded away while the older ones were propped up. There was at least one level that disappeared into the mountain below, and one and a half stories above.

vampire who complains constantly about how difficult it is to access laudanum in the "so-called modern era." from their many, many complaints, it's clear they've gone to considerable difficulty over the past century maintaining a steady personal laudanum supply. their werewolf roomie is on the verge of holding an intervention. it is then casually revealed that laudanum has no intoxicating effect on bloodsuckers. the vampire just use it as a "spicy blood sauce"; it adds a nice kick

#it's later revealed they developed this flavor profile by falling in with a group of 'whiny gothic nitwits' in the early 1800s #who were 'annoying as hell and never shut the fuck up' but their blood was picante as fuck so whatever #(it's later revealed these 'gothic nitwits' consisted of lord byron and his literary contemporaries)

While we're on the topic of De-aging AU's I wanna talk about Jason and Damian if Jason was 14 again real quick.

Do you guys think that Damian looks at this version of Jason, so different from the version he knows, nothing like the person he was told Jason was, and feels uncomfortably seen?

Damian was always told that Jason died because he was reckless, because he disobeyed orders, he was fired as Robin and he got himself killed. A cautionary tale, not a threat to his position. He dismisses Jason because Bruce does, because Dick does, because sometimes even Babs and Alfred do.

That's not the kid that he's looking at now. This Jason is happy, and smart, and full of love that has not yet soured into grief. He hangs on Bruce's every word, trains until his hands bleed and his body gives out to perfect the moves Bruce teaches him. He looks at Bruce with stars in his eyes and he calls him dad.

And Damian can't help but think, that this is the perfect Robin. The perfect son. And if Jason - sweet, loving, strong, Jason - can be fired, can die and have his room locked away and his pictures torn down, can have his last memory as Robin be as A Good Soldier, how could the rest of them ever compete? What could Damian do to stand a chance?

Jason will never grow out of the shadow of Robin, like the rest of them did. As long as Bruce, and Dick, and Babs, and Alfred look at him and see a dead kid who came back wrong, he will never get to be anything else. He will not get to be looked at through who he is now without the shadow of a dead boy looming over him.

And the worst part? Jason is exactly the same person he was back then. Bitter, sure, angry, justifiably, but he is still the boy with too much love in his heart and righteous fury festering in his gut. He is exactly the same boy who threw himself in front of an explosion to save his mother.

(The lines between the mother that betrayed him and the father that disgraced him are so very blurred. Fire or blade or crowbars or fists it does not matter. It ends the same way it always does because Jason Todd always dies, in every universe, in every timeline, Jason dies and crawls out only to be killed again and again and again.)
