could you recommend an indie game that does disco elysium or its kind of game better? (/genuine)

i'd be happy to recommend some games to you for sure!

but i would like to preface this by saying that my point (which is hard to explain in a pithy tag aside to be fair lol) isn't necessarily that these will be "better" than disco elysium. that's incredibly hard to quantify anyway since so much of this is based on taste. e.g. i disliked some things about DE other people loved (like the pacing) even though i overall had a good time with the game.

it's more that the way people were talking about disco elysium, especially in terms of like... "professional video game journalism" but also definitely on this site and the other formerly blue side, was tinged with this tone that DE is somehow unique or groundbreaking in its attempt to treat a video game like an artform or a serious vehicle for storytelling. which is insulting especially to the games DE clearly draws from.

a lot of people who don't usually play video games played DE based on recommendations, which is great! but a huge part of the response from those people didn't seem to be "wow, clearly i can have a good time with video games if they're like this, i should seek out more". it instead seemed to be "well folks, pack it up, this is the one video game i will enjoy because it's Deep unlike everything else out there". which is incredibly disappointing.

anyway. whether these recommendations will hit for you will primarily depend on what you're looking for when you say "its kind of game", but here's some games that gave me the same general feeling.

planescape: torment is the game that heavily inspired disco elysium. it's a similarly combat-light crpg with a focus on exploration and story and set in a weird, technologically discongruent setting. i would also recommend its sequel, torment: tides of numenera. i didn't enjoy that one as much but it was still pretty good.

kentucky road zero is a game about a truck driver who has to cross the titular road zero and the many people he meets on the way. it's also magical realism so if you enjoyed the genre of disco elysium this might be up your alley.

beautiful desolation is another game which is based on real world culture/history with sci-fi world building on top. in this case south africa. it's really beautiful and rewards exploration in a similar way.

return of the obra dinn is also an atmospheric detective game set on a ship lost in 1803. it's by the same creator who made papers, please (which is also excellent by the way).

hypnospace outlaw has a similar half absurd, half earnest tone. it also felt similarly nostalgic to me. it's incredibly easy to sink a lot of time into this one though so watch out lol.

orwell, and its sequel, orwell: ignorance is strength, are similar "internet" simulators like HO with a much more overt political tone (if you couldn't tell by the name lol). you play as an employee for a government surveillance program.

stasis if you're looking for more isometric point and click games with a strong atmosphere and great voice acting.

sunless sea, and its sequel, sunless skies, are exploration/roguelike games about a weird, fantastical world. if you've ever played fallen london, they're set in the same universe.

what remains of edith finch is also magical realism and dark comedy, so if you enjoyed the tone of DE you might enjoy that.

some say it has always been here also has a surreal and sometimes oppressive atmosphere. i wish this game was longer, i loved it so much.

i miss the sea of japan is another wonderful bitsy game i got reminded of when i thought about SSIHABH. it's wistful and sweet.

i have no mouth and i must scream is a psychological thriller about five people and their dark pasts trying to outwit an AI. it's very atmospheric and also has variously fucked up (by life) protagonists.

whispers of a machine is another detective game with more of a sci-fi slant, though it's set in a world inspired by sweden and other nordic countries. it's also very atmospheric and has some great voice acting.

buddy simulator 1984 gave me a lot of the same feelings disco elysium did (wistfulness, nostalgia, anxiety, etc lol). i really loved the first half of the game but wasn't as into the second half, would absolutely still recommend it though.

and if we're talking just straight up great crpgs with a heavily political tone, i will always always always recommend harebrained schemes shadowrun trilogy (especially dragonfall and hong kong, both incredible games. returns is... fine lol but definitely not on the level of the sequels) and fallout 1 and 2.

plus, no rec list about magical realism would be complete without life is strange. :') i haven't played any of the sequels and it's been a long time since i played it, but i remember loving it at the time.

games i haven't played yet but that are on my to play list and which look like they could scratch the same itch:

citizen sleeper, also a dice based game which is very narrative and exploration based.

norco, which several of my friends love a lot.

where the water tastes like wine, which is set in the great depression era of the US and about collecting stories and sharing them.

pentiment, another detective game set in a real world approximation. i love everything obsidian touches so i'm sure it's great, but i haven't gotten round to it yet.

night in the woods seems to be popular with people who like DE so it might be up your alley. i'm pretty sure it's also magical realism?

roadwarden is another isometric point and click game about exploration and friends have said it has a great atmosphere.

i hope those are a good starting point for you! i would also genuinely recommend just hopping on itch.io and typing in a random prompt and seeing what you get. i've discovered sooo many wonderful games (many of them completely free, though i will always advocate for tipping the creators) by just noodling around on there. tons and tons of incredible indie games who don't have the luxury of publisher funding made by people who could really use the support.

Tyla D1 Chart Analysis

Tyla is a Bharani Nakshatra; so she is a Venus girlie, which is why when people always mention Tyla they always mention her visuals. Tyla also has a Shatabhisha Ascendant and Uranus, and Purva Bhadra Venus, all sideral Aquarius placements.

This makes her COMPLETELY unique and easily makes her stand out really well in social/group settings; but in this context, it's her in the music industry and her concepts/promotion techniques.

The placements in her chart truly do resonate with Tyla because she was truly born to be in the public eye! Her beauty, talent, hard work, and dedication!! She is killing it!!

Now with her Bharani Nakshatra, which is the same as NEWJEANS as well, these two artists truly are breakthrough artists who both had a delay in their careers but they finally got their chance to shine and surprisingly love each other as well!!

Tyla has a Bharani Rahu, Moon, and Aswini Mars! She is passionate about her singing and dancing! We all have seen her dances and her energy on stage… I mean just look at her!

Another thing I would like to point out is how all her dances are quite fast-paced and require a certain amount of energy to actually do… along with hard practice because you also have to focus on footwork and strengthen lower body movement.

Here in South Africa, we always say “The aim is not to sweat.”

When we dance, we tend to just enjoy the music, feel the beat, and just go with the flow! hence why when you come across a video of South African kids dancing or TikTok trends, people barely sweat! We just have fun and relax!!

For Tyla, she is one of the few figures we have representing South Africa as a whole, in a completely positive light! She is constantly praised by us for raising our flag up high.

This was all possible thanks to one specific placement in her chart that stands out which is her Rohini (Taurus) Part of Fortune (PoF) in the 4H, in astrology the 4H represents home, native land/roots and Tyla basically promotes our country every single day lol.

Her placement lands right directly on South Africa’s 11H Rohini Stellium too! This emphasizes her being unapologetically proudly South African and sharing it with the world!

And surprisingly enough… Tyla has no negative hard aspects with her Saturn placements.

Tyla has her Purva Phalguni Jupiter (Leo), this could mean that she has luck in terms of building partnerships and getting brand deals too! Many brand deals would like to work with Tyla but it seems she is very picky in terms of her choices as well!

What made me giggle is the aspect of Jupiter square PoF because South Africans were begging Tyla to avoid advertising products that are already expensive or just any South African product because they knew that the companies will increase their prices.

mind you those go-slo crisps you see are usually R5, and that is REALLY cheap here, mainly when you buy them from a corner store. Surprisingly after the music video for ‘Jump’ dropped, this well known store, in the screenshot is the one store that high to high-middle class citizens shop. This company NEVER sells “corner store” products in their stores lol!

Tyla has a 9H Vishakha Ketu (Libra), and Ketu in Vedic astrology represents detachment I would like to point out that Tyla once mentioned that she had no interest in going to university, but she would have only gone there to study engineering because it brings in a lot of money lol! I can’t find the interview now but I will get it soon!!

OHHH! Another thing I would like to mention is that Ketu also represents the body and Rahu represents the head. Tyla is obsessed with wearing tiger prints! and Vishakas representative animal is a TIGER! Her name branding always has a tiger claw too!!

Aswini/Bharani placements are also known to have scars/markings and I, an Aswini ascendant, have a teardrop-shaped birthmark right beneath the corner of my eye! And Tyla has a Rahu In Bharani and she does her own DIY scar on her eyebrow too!

Tyla has a Anuradha MC and a Jyeshtha Pluto (Scorpio) in her 10H since Scorpio is ruled by Mars, and her Mars is in her 3H, I would not be suprised to see if she would suddenly release a new album with a completely different sound and concept. Since MC is how we’re seen by the public, i do not know if anyone has noticed this but Tyla has a really alluring energy/aura and this placement will also attract a lot of jealousy… so i hope shes careful!!

She has a Purva Ashadha Mercury and Chiron (Sagittarius), her Mercury placement in the 11H makes so much sense because she is spoken a lot about on International social media. She is literally popular, hence why I am doing this post because she got majority votes lol! Tyla is also known for her South African accent too and she does not shy away from speaking that way too!

Chiron being there could mean she could’ve experienced issues with past friendships or connections, and with Sagittarius being there could also mean she could not enjoy life overseas and would rather stay in South Africa instead. Another issue that could come along are hate comments, i am going to need troll accounts to log off and stop causing people in the public eye mental distress.

Finally, Tyla has a Shravana Sun and Neptune in her 12H, and 12H in vedic represents foriegn lands so Tyla has to accept that she may have to relocate overseas for good! This placement also makes Tyla a really calculated women who really knows her ways to navigate around this world too!Tyla could also be a homebody and enjoy relaxing and recharing her energy too! These placements could mean she also has an interest in the occult/tarot and would also excel a lot in that too!!

A/N- Final fic of the year! This fic officially make 30 fics I wrote this year. Thank you for all the support! Sorry for any typos and such ahead of time.

Nature. Nature is really beautiful with all these different creatures out there in the world. Your love for all these things affected your decision on what you wanted to do in life.

After your strenuous four years of university, you got the job of your dreams. A Zoologist may sound boring to some but for you? It was perfect. Your love for the job let another two years go by as you traveled all over the world to study various animals.

That brings you to today. An exhausting twelve-hour flight the day before brought you to a country you haven’t been to before, South Africa. Currently, you found yourself in the middle of a Safari. The stereotypical Jeep you saw on YouTube videos was your mode of transportation.

As you sat in the back seat, your hand was full with a hefty recording device. With the window lowered, you used that as an opportunity to extend your arms for a closer shot. The sound of a camera shutter hit your ears as you continued to film.

“Oppa. Are you getting it?”

“Yeah. Keep taking pictures of the lions, Minju. I think it’s almost over.”

What was it that you and Minju were documenting? Lion breeding processes. As the two mammals were occupied in their activities, you and Minju were making sure to get it all.

Minju was assigned to do a new mating and breeding process study for lions and being a good friend you decided to go with her to help her document. Just as the male lion stopped its movements, you and Minju brought your devices back into the vehicle and brought the windows back up.

“Yes! We got it! How lucky are we to get two lions mating on our first day here?”

“Very lucky. I- Minju, Start the car and drive.”

“Why?”

“They see us.”

Turning her head, Minju was faced with the pair of lions staring at you intruders. Without hesitation, Minju started the Vehicle and slammed on the accelerator. As you looked back the two lions could be seen in the distance. The sound of their growl hit your ears even with the closed windows.

After driving like a madwoman for the next thirty minutes, Minju finally pulled into Capetown. Seeing the familiar surroundings of buildings helped calm down the girl and her erratic driving. Pulling in front of your hotel, Minju put the car in park and relaxed her back on the car seat.

“You ok?”

“Yeah, I’m fine. That was a rush huh?”

“Yeah, it sure was. Let’s bring our stuff in and see what we got.”

Agreeing with you, the young girl unlocked the doors and stepped out of the vehicle. Grabbing your equipment, you followed Minju inside the nice hotel and made your way up to your room. As the front door opened, Minju made her way over to your bed and placed her stuff down.

Once inside, your hands grabbed the laptop next to the tv and turned it on. With the necessary cables already attached, you connected the camera to your laptop which was connected to the hotel tv.

Selecting the most recent file on the laptop display, the sound of Minju’s voice can be heard from the tv speakers. Stepping back, you sat down on your bed and began to watch the film.

“Hello. This is Kim Minju, a Zoologist for the Animal Research Department of the University of Seoul. My fellow Zoologist, Jang Doyoon is handling the video camera which will be recording our subjects. Now for my first leading research project, I decided to study something that I feel could use more information. The Lion breeding process. Now due to how protective Lions can be during this, people need to arrive near the beginning of the process or later on. We have been tracking two lions from early in the day, keeping our distance Despite being in this bulky Jeep. Any second now the- Oppa I think they are starting. Make sure to film!”

As the camera moved from Minju, the tv screen then displayed the Male Lion jumping on top of the female lion. The next two minutes felt a little uncomfortable as you and Minju watched the mammals have intercourse. With the final thrust, the Lion ended its mating process and stood back on its four legs.

Jumping up, you then walked over and paused the video right there.

“So. I think we learned that lions don’t last long.”

With a giggle leaving Minju’s mouth, you began to laugh along with your friend at her comment.

“So, Minju. I was wondering, why did you want to study the Lion breeding process?”

“Well I want to study the breeding process of a specific mammal but I was told there isn’t much on Lion’s process. With that in mind, I decided to first study the lion and now I can study the next mammal.”

“Really? What’s the mammal you want to study next?.”

Moving her stuff from the bed, Minju then faced you and smirked. That dangerous gaze began to fill your mind with a lustful sensation. Looking at her outfit, you noticed how all of it matched. The tan beret held her long brown hair that lay on her covered chest. The tan shirt that covered her upper body was accompanied by a striped tie that made the outfit look a bit more professional. Your favorite part of the wardrobe was her shorts.

Moving your head down, you saw Minju’s legs begin to walk closer to you. Her meaty thighs jiggled with each step she took. A finger touched your chin and brought your glance back up to Minju’s face.

“You see. I want to study the breeding process of home sapiens, otherwise known as Humans.”

You didn't need to be a genius to pick up what Minju was saying. Without hesitation, your arms extended and pulled the young woman closer to you. Attaching your Lips to Minju’s, the two of you quickly battle for control. Pushing your tongue forward, Minju stopped fighting and allowed your tongue in her mouth.

While doing research for my Desire & Astrology project (now closed), I was reminded of something that deals with Venus but is rarely discussed, and that's beauty pageants.

Whether this is because of its declining popularity or lack of interest in something that is presumed to be shallow, beauty pageants display Venus's domain very well.

OG BEAUTY QUEEN

Let's go back, and I mean way back, to Aphrodite. She took part in a beauty contest herself. Since I will be referencing the original myth (The Judgement of Paris) that appears in the Cypria, Greek names will be used instead of Roman.

It all starts at the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, all the gods were to attend except for one, Eris, the goddess of strife and discord.

She showed up anyway but was not allowed to attend. This makes her upset and to live up to her name, she causes discord by dropping an apple that was addressed to the most beautiful.

The three goddesses: Aphrodite, Hera, and Athena began to argue about who the fairest of them all was. As we can tell, Aphrodite won and became thee beauty queen of the millennium.

I began looking up countries that had top-winning international titles (Miss World, Miss Universe, etc.) and/or had a strong pageantry culture. These countries are (most to least):

Venezuela

The Philippines

The United States

Puerto Rico

India

Australia

United Kingdom

Brazil

Sweden

Mexico

While looking at these countries' natal charts, those who had an AA/A rating, there was a particular aspect that popped up, Venus-Saturn.

India: Venus Conjunct Saturn

United Kingdom: Venus Opposite Saturn

South Africa: Venus Square Saturn

Venezuela: Venus Opposite Saturn

It's a smaller list compared to the listed countries. So, I instead looked up the natal charts of documented beauty pageant winners.

I can't list all the women (and men!!) who have this placement it will just make the post even longer than it already is. But here are some (with AA/A rating!!):

Michelle Pfeiffer: Venus Square Saturn

Jennifer Hosten: Venus Square Saturn

I read 100+ charts (all had verified birth times btw), and though I'm focusing on Venus-Saturn I did notice some other aspects that appeared frequently:

Why focus on the Venus-Saturn aspect? Well, I'm kind of tired of the same old description lol. But really, going through the natal charts was interesting, and of the amount that I read, over 40% had the aspect (I did the math), which made up the majority.

First a recap of the planets Venus and Saturn. Venus is the planet of beauty, unity, and harmony, because of this influence this makes Venus a benefic.

On the other hand, Saturn is the planet of restriction, time, and rejection which means he is a malefic planet.

While watching these videos about the pageantry culture of many countries and the women who participated in them, I noticed the habits of these women and those who assist them.

These women were restrained. The restriction wasn't just self-imposed, it was also done by those around them (sometimes parents, other contestants, or even the public).

So, when Saturn communicates with Venus it may indicate that connecting with others, whether platonic or romantic, is difficult, strained, and restricted. And it's not just connecting with others, but also connecting with themselves.

This is more obvious with harsh aspects as the planets are in conflict. And to reach some sort of balance, you have to appease both planets.

Beauty pageants are one way to appease the conflict.

Through pageants, a person can explore the "Venusian" domain through fashion, glamor, being surrounded by women, and of course, receiving attention.

The "Saturnian" domain is explored through isolation from their families and friends, a restriction of their diet, and the development of the discipline needed to win the competition.

ATMOSPHERE OF BEAUTY PAGEANTS

I watched many documentaries and I gathered quotes that I felt showed the Venus-Saturn aspect perfectly from the preparation to the execution:

"The one who gets the crown, she has to be very disciplined, very well-centered. You have to polish the rough diamond and all the rough edges"

"Morning call at 5:30, curfew at 10 o'clock, no food outside the diet regime, no alcohol, no smoking in public. Every move is watched."

The woman given any beauty pageant title is the woman with the most discipline and shows it not only to the judges but the public.

While I watching one documentary there were two women, Neha and Gauahar, who were labeled as "stuck-up" and were given the nickname "ice-vaginas" by another contestant.

And this is a recurring assumption of those who have prominent Saturn placements. They're often seen as being aloof and cold when they are not.

While I don't have the natal charts of Neha and Gauahar, I can point out that the winner of the pageant, Neha, did display Saturn-like qualities the best.

She was strict with her diet, which included no smoking.

She was distant and focused on winning the competition only.

And while Neha didn't wish any ill or harm to the other contestants she still came off as rude or impolite.

Funnily enough, rudeness is often aligned with Saturn. Archetypically speaking, Saturn has no need for politeness or niceness, he is isolated and prefers to keep to himself.

Venus on the other hand is all about bonding, and to bond you have to be pleasant, polite, and aware of others.

BEAUTY QUEEN CONFESSIONS

Here's what some Beauty Queens had to say about their experience in pageantry:

"I had phenomenal moments as Miss America. But the reality is it is 24 hours a day every day of the week for the entirety of the year."

"Behind the scenes, there were rules like no men were allowed in your hotel, including your father."

"It's pressure to perform, pressure to produce, pressure to provide."

"The schedule was grueling. I remember having 3-5 appearances in one day. And a different city, every 18-36 hours, literally, it seems glamorous and yet it was very lonely, many times."

"It's really really hard because you are mentally drained, you are physically drained, you are isolated."

"I felt very alone, It's very isolating. It's just you and your tour manager all year."

And that's the thing, no matter how glamorous it may seem to be on stage in a glittering gown, the reality (Saturn) can be, and is, very lonely.

The rules and guidelines that used to be in place to compete were so strict, but the guidelines that followed the woman who won the title were even stricter.

No beauty pageant with beauty sounds silly, but a beauty pageant without discipline and pressure is comical.

Pressure to be graceful and composed. Pressure to have the best answer, the best smile, the best gown, the best walk, the perfect package.

As pressure makes diamonds. The pressure (Saturn) and stiffness (also Saturn) are honed into gracefulness (Venus).

I previously mentioned how many beauty pageant participants restrict their diet. Below are two quotes from two different documentaries:

"When I competed in Miss America there were women who, unfortunately, were currently dealing with eating disorders. One woman would only eat baby food, so she just brought baby food jars with her, and that's all she would have."

"This is my lunch, and this is what I eat two hours after lunch. Spinach with chicken broccoli with fish. It tastes horrible. Nothing has seasoning, but this is the diet. One has to make sacrifices."

As starvation is aligned with Saturn, sadly, it's not surprising to hear and see many women restricting themselves to win.

I know this is about beauty pageants, but I see the same thing with models. In fact many people, from the models themselves to people who work alongside them, mention it.

Models express how the face pressure to avoid food to keep a thin appearance.

And this pressure doesn't just come from designers and casting directors, but it's self-imposed.

Many models describe the time they were their sickest and thinnest as also the time when they experienced a boost in their career, maybe even experiencing their prime.

They joke about being "hangers", since their job is to display clothes, and the focus should be on that, not the model's body.

It seems demeaning, another Saturn thing, but it's why they strive to be so skinny.

Saturn is the planet of rejection, and rejection can foster humility or humbleness, another thing he rules over.

When models address themselves as hangers they remind not only themselves but also those around them that the attention should not be on them, but the clothes. The message is clear:

"I don't matter, the clothes do."

wrapping it up

Though the way I read birth charts is heavily influenced by Hellenistic and medieval astrological techniques, I still believe that everything is up to the person.

The focus is the theme of Venus-Saturn: disciplined and restricted beauty/connection/and love. Though using beauty pageants is a dramatic example, I feel it makes the theme and archetype of the aspect obvious.

The Venus-Saturn native understands, or at least comes to understand, that joyful things take work; beauty can bring joy, and relationships--connecting with others--bring joy, but all take work, vulnerability, and some sacrifice.

It's like this, in this context, Saturn allows you to explore the "Venusian" domain: to show yourself, enjoy the fun of dressing up, and be around people.

But you have to sacrifice your time, the habits that you previously established (eating whatever you want, smoking, etc.), and the connections you already have.

Because Venus-Saturn natives are typically so used to being in situations where this theme is emphasized it should be no surprise that they often end up winning the crown, literally and metaphorically.
