Kingdom Hearts Final Mix Recap: End of the World
Sora, Donald, and Goofy arrive in a cavern known as the Gate to the Dark. They walk towards the mouth of the cave, which opens to a watery plane known as the Final Dimension.
Goofy makes note of what this world is, the remnants of all the worlds the Heartless have consumed, merging together into a nightmarish hellscape. (Just, with more in-character word choice than what I used, even if I would love to hear Bill Farmer say "Nightmarish Hellscape" in his Goofy voice.)
Sora asks if all the worlds will go back to normal once they defeat Ansem, but wonders what will happen to this world and them, by extension.
Goofy figures that the End of the World, being a Heartless world, will disappear, but doesn't think they will. Their hearts are too strong for them to simply disappear.
Sora takes out the Oathkeeper charm, and promises to return it.
The Final Dimension has several invisible walls, forcing Sora to rush between the little rocks on the water's surface while dark globes rain from the sky.
Sometimes, one of these globes will drop right onto the trio, forcing them to fight Heartless in order to escape.
In addition to that, some of the chests ALSO contain globes of darkness, but these at least reward you with the contained item once they're cleared.
However, upon reaching the cavern at the opposite end of the Gate to the Dark, another globe of darkness drops down on the trio, this one containing an Arch Behemoth.
Upon defeating it, Sora, Donald, and Goofy are deposited at the top of the Giant Crevasse, with Donald wondering where Ansem is. Sora remarks that he's going to be in the darkest, scariest part of this place, and from this point on, the trio will be going farther and farther down in order to progress.
The bottom of the crevasse features both a Save Point and a gaping hole. This hole leads to the World Terminus.
The World Terminus is the most iconic location in the End of the World, consisting of multiple pillar-like structures that each correspond to one of the worlds with a Keyhole the player can lock (so both Destiny Islands, which was destroyed, and Monstro, which isn't technically a world in the lore, are absent), all floating in an empty void.
In the center of each world is a terminal. If Sora has locked that world's Keyhole, the terminal will be a pillar of violet light and he'll be able to progress. If not, the terminal will be blue and he'll have to enter and battle Heartless to progress, dissolving into dark mist every time he enters a Terminal.
Note: Each one of these terminals has a treasure chest that holds an accessory, so skip them at your own risk.
Anyway, each one of these terminals links to one of the previous worlds, and go as follows:
Traverse Town's Third District (with the same layout as the first Guard Armor Battle).
Wonderland's Rabbit Hole.
Olympus Coliseum's Coliseum Gates.
Deep Jungle's Bamboo Thicket.
Agrabah's Plaza.
Atlantica's Calm Depths (complete with underwater transformation).
Halloween Town's Torture Chamber (complete with Halloween transformations, the only time the Torture Chamber can be accessed outside of the Oogie Boogie boss battle).
Neverland's Galley.
The 100 Acre Wood is the penultimate terminal, and the pillar of sparkling light leads to the Meadow, which in turn contains a Save Point and a Treasure Chest that holds an Elixer. He also dissolves into sparkling lights instead of dark mist, and there are no enemies to fight.
This is also the only time in the series that Donald and Goofy enter the 100 Acre Wood.
The final terminal is a pillar of flame, and leads to the Laboratory where Ansem performed his experiments in Hollow Bastion. Sora, Donald, and Goofy are spat out of a portal in the hall outside, with the way forward blocked by a Heartless Emblem, meaning the only way to progress is to enter the lab proper. Of course, first they have to defeat the Heartless.
Inside the lab is a strange machine consisting of five pods hooked up to a sphere filled with bubbling liquid.
It's purpose was unknown at the time of release and remained unknown until very recently, but the important thing is the terminal in front of the machine, and its message:
Ones born of the heart and darkness, devoid of hearts, ravage all worlds and bring desolation. Seize all hearts and consummate the great heart. All hearts to be one, one heart to encompass all. Realize the destiny: the realm of Kingdom Hearts. The great darkness sealed within the great heart. Progeny of darkness, come back to the eternal darkness. For the heart of light shall unseal the path. Seven hearts, one Keyhole, one key to the door. The door of darkness, tied by two keys. The door to darkness to seal the light. None shall pass but shadows, returning to the darkness. Ones born of the heart and darkness, hunger for every heart until the dark door opens.
After Sora reads this message, he's ambushed by more Heartless, and can't leave until they've all been destroyed.
Upon leaving, the pillar of fire is replaced by a hole, the wind passing through it howling.
Dropping down this hole leads to the Evil Grounds, where Sora, Donald, and Goofy fly above the bald mountain, and encounter none other than Chernabog.
Chernabog doesn't think much of these insects at first, casually sending his attacks after them and occasionally making his volcano erupt, but these mortals just refuse to die.
That's irritating, might as well start calling upon wisps and use his other powers.
But then they continue to survive.
And then they start to win.
Chernabog scrambles to regain control of the battle, but it's too late. Even after throwing everything he has at these three insignificant mortals, he still can't win. In the end, he vanishes in a blast of white fire, having survived the destruction of his world (which he may have wrought himself) only to be felled by three mere insects who only regard him as an obstacle to stopping their own enemy.
A fitting end for one of Disney's most iconic villains, wouldn't you say?
Sora, Donald, and Goofy fly into the crater, and then walk through the remains of Aurora's, Snow White's, Cinderella's, and Belle's worlds, dropping down lower and lower, until they come across a small room known only as the Linked Worlds, a Heartless Emblem in the back of the chamber.
There, a second Arch Behemoth drops in out of nowhere to block their path, but is felled by Sora, Donald, and Goofy.
A piece of the Heartless Emblem breaks off.
More and more Heartless assail the trio, only to fall one by one, the Heartless Emblem crumbling more and more until finally, the last Heartless falls, and the way forward opens.
This chamber is the Final Rest, containing the final Save Point our heroes will ever see, and the very same door from the Dive to the Heart that also appeared at the Secret Place.
Entering this room unlocks the final bonus boss, and the hardest boss in the entire game.
To access this boss, Sora must return to the chapel in Hollow Bastion, and enter the dark portal that reopened.
When he, Donald, Goofy, and the Best emerge, they find the room they battled Maleficent's dragon form in to be suspiciously empty. But then a man in a black coat appears out of nowhere behind them and walks through Sora, and text from earlier scenes flashes on screen against a black background.
Ah, it seems you are special too.
Goofy, using archived audio of the first time he uttered Ansem's name, questions the coated man's identity.
That name rings familiar.
Sora expresses frustration at the man's cryptic words (again, with archived audio).
You remind me of him.
He then blasts Sora with a bolt of energy, with Sora blocking and deflecting the shot into the ceiling with his Keyblade, before asking what that's supposed to mean as dust rains down.
It means you are not whole. You are incomplete. Allow me-
He deploys ethereal blades from his palms.
-To test your strength.
This is the Unknown. He is the hardest boss in Final Mix, designed to be a final challenge for the player to overcome after conquering everything else the game has to throw at them.
His battle is also canon, and incredibly important to the plot of a later game.
He attacks with his ethereal blades, bolts of energy, spheres of energy, and even locking Sora's Command Menu and forcing him to play a sort of reaction mini game to break free as his health is whittled away. This battle puts all of your skills to the test, but if you emerge triumphant, you'll get an eerie cutscene.
The Unknown immediately shrugs off all the damage Sora, Donald, Goofy, and the Beast did to him in the cutscene, revealing that they barely even scratched him.
Impressive, this will be enjoyable.
Sora demands to know who he is.
It is beyond your comprehension, for now. Until we meet again.
He begins to fade away.
I am-
His answer shocks Sora.
But a mere shell.
Sora is rewarded with both an EXP Necklace (but odds are you'll already be the Level Cap if you're fighting him), and the thirteenth and final page of Ansem's Report:
Where does the body go when it separates from the heart? If the soul remains within the body, is it still considered to be deceased?
When the heart returns to the Heartless, the physical form disappears. But that is merely true in this world. Perhaps the body exists in another form in another world.
If that is the case, then it is possible for one to exist in two worlds.
A being that is neither darkness nor light; belonging nowhere; abandoned by its heart; a mere shell of its former self.
The relation between the heart and body is complex. However, I am certain that if your self exists here, then by definition, the other cannot truly "exist."
The other, the one which does not exist, shall be dubbed, "Nobody."
Back in the End of the World, Sora approaches the Door. However, before he can open it, the voice from the Dive to the Heart warns him that the door is one way, and he will not be able to return once he enters it.
Only Sora can hear the voice.
The voice encourages Sora, and reminds him that he is the one who will open the door.
Interacting with the door a second time(hopefully after some preparation) leads to Sora opening it, and crossing over to the other side with Donald and Goofy.
Sora, however, is shocked to discover that he's back on his island.
The journey ends where it began.
-
Goofy during this whole adventure be like

my completely biased and official rating of every keyblade ever:
Tumblr media
Kingdom Key: absolute classic. excellent design for the like, mascot keyblade. very simple, vaguely key shaped. i hate the mouse head though it's so stupid and makes no sense. and i hate mickey. 9/10 minus a point for the weird mickey keychain
Oathkeeper: wonderful. amazing. never boring. excellent design love the heart and wings and all the significance. and that the keychain is kairi's charm? terrific. 10/10
Oblivion: brilliant. awesome. phenomenal. again excellent design the wings and chains and purple crystal are absolutely perfect. love the crown keychain. 10/10
Ultima Weapon 1: literally just a sword with some filigree on it. nice. too much yellow and i don't like the weird cyan gradient on the guard. 7/10
Kingdom Key D: d for disgusting. i don't have any other comments i just hate it. 2/10
Keyblade of Hearts: yeah that sure is an anti-keyblade. love the simplicity and the heart in the negative space of the teeth. and that it doesn't have a keychain, that fueled a lot of theories for 12yo me 8/10
Lady Luck: i think i don't like this one bc to get it u need to use a white trinity but you can't do that until near the end and i have way cooler blades to use. the design is pretty ok, don't really get the card keychain tho. 5/10
Olympia: oh the sight of this one makes me irritated because the kh1 strategy guide uses this in one of the pictures for the fight against possessed riku. it did not help me win. and i hate short keyblades. love the clouds and columns though 7/10
Jungle King: kinda ugly but i appreciate that it looks kinda handmade. also like the butterfly keychain bc it doesn't look like it fits but it Does. also the first good alternate blade u get in the game so. 8/10

Lionheart: oh i am so biased by recoded. absolutely excellent keyblade. design's kind of weird tho where are those lions going. 9/10
Diamond Dust: so i was really confused because i thought this was khux-only or maybe bbs keyblade but apparently it's kh1 final mix only. you know what i got as a reward for fighting the ice titan? sephiroth. you know what i got for fighting sephiroth? NOTHING. it was my favorite khux blade though so grrrr 7/10
One-Winged Angel: grr bark bark final mix again fuck you. kinda weird design though like what is the teeth? a meteor? should've been a wing. nice guard though there's not enough hand room. excellent keychain obviously. 8/10

Star Seeker: i wanna hate it because it's mickey's/yen sid's but honestly it's so nice. the stars and moons and comets and gradients and colors... wonderful 9/10

Monochrome: super cute!! i don't like Timeless River but this fits it so well and has cute hit effect. 8/10
Mysterious Abyss: i always get this one way late in the game so it's always pretty pointless oops lol. also the design doesn't really say atlantica?? 3/10
Follow the Wind: another weird miss but i like this one more. nice wheel shaped guard, and that the keychain is a cursed coin. 6/10
Wishing Lamp: now THIS is the agrabah keyblade. very nice and elegant. looks like the palace! 7/10
Decisive Pumpkin: THIS ONE 😭😭 it's so ugly but it's so strong so i have to use it but it's so ugly. it does look like jack's idea of christmas so points i guess 😭 4/10
Circle of Life: also pretty ugly. and short. sorry simba. 3/10
Sweet Memories: shrek voice it doesn't even have attack. i don't like winnie the pooh so that's definitely influencing me. makes cute noises iirc and looks pretty cute. 4/10
Photon Debugger: this one should look pretty cool but my brain is saying it's bad. i think the giant red ball by the teeth are throwing me off. love the neon blue tho 5/10
Gull Wing: why the weird space in the name. anyway. i really want to love this keyblade bc i love X2 but it's really bad. i'm so sorry YRP kh did you so wrong. excellent keychain choice though. 2/10

Bond of Flame: looks like a bad first draft of axel's keyblade. either the teeth or the guard should look like a chakram, pick one. love it though. 7/10
Two Become One: MY BELOVED <3 excellent design, so so so roxas i think he should use it. very excellent i love the little twist at the top. checkered handle is a little weird. 10/10
Fatal Crest: lol i was so mad when i first saw this because it looked like one of my oc's keyblades. i like it now though, it's a dragon!! pretty neat bro 8/10
Winner's Proof: oh this one is so cute. if it wasn't a reward it would be really weird and bad. surprisingly elegant! and there's even 13 mushrooms on it! 9/10
Tumblr media
(shoutout to portadorx on deviantart for the 358 keyblade refs)
Missing Ache: YOU. interesting design, though it says roxas more than ventus to me. great first alt keyblade. 7/10
Ominous Blight: very edgy names in this game <3 looks like guardian's soul, which is interesting. i don't like yellow but it works bc blight 6/10

Leviathan: weirdly furry looking. very cool guard 6/10
True Light's Flight: looks like two become one if it was only one. the top kinda looks like the nobody sigil 9/10
Rejection of Fate: SPEAR. epic name too, but i think it should swap names with true light's flight. very cool but i don't remember seeing it in name. kinda awkward bc it looks like it should be a spear 7/10
Midnight Roar: sooo cool. the orange handle pops without looking wrong... nice. also the teeth kinda look like a bat. 9/10
Glimpse of Darkness: ugly. weirdly bulky and hollow. short. 3/10

Silent Dirge: GoD but purple. 2/10
Lunar Eclipse: TE but purple. 4/10
Darker than Dark: Hello 😳TLF but purple 10/10
Astral Blast: Abyssal Tide but yellow. interesting choice, but kinda clashes with the blue accents 7/10
Maverick Flare: Ominous Blight but red... excellent. very nice. 8/10
Twilight Blaze: Abaddon Plasma but red... also excellent. very epic. 9/10
Omega Weapon: props for not looking like any of the ultima weapons. very interesting and spiky but i kinda don't like it. 6/10
Aubade: kinda weird. "draws forth its wielder's personality"... ok. looks light elemented. 7/10
Wooden Stick: lol 10/10
Umbrella: not what i would've chosen but lol 10/10
Tumblr media
Zero/One: WONDERFUL, EXCELLENT, AMAZING. i can't really explain why i love this one so much it's just very good. 10/10
Tumblr media
Earthshaker: very solid design. not much to say it's just nice. love the colored guard. 7/10
Ends of the Earth: love that it is so clearly an earthshake upgrade. makes u realize how incomplete the first one is. 9/10
Dreadgnaw: kinda silly looking lol those are teeth. love the red bit in the center. looks very similar to earthshaker in a good way. 8/10
Chaos Ripper: looks like EotE but in a bad way. i don't like the weird teeth. it's also almost impractically long but i'm here for that. ALSO THE EYE. NICE. 7/10
Rainfell: oooo i love this it's so simple but so nice. very elegant 9/10
Stormfall: less nice. looks like a rainfell upgrade though. also kinda looks like master's defender which makes sense but i don't like it. 6/10
Brightcrest: GORGEOUS. PERFECT AND WONDERFUL. SO PRETTY. i wish it was kairi's. kinda looks to ornamental for aqua? but good for her. 10/10
Wayward Wind: none of ventus' blades look very ventusy to me. this one looks like an extra training one they had sitting around. cool shape though 5/10
Frolic Flame: NICE. looks like lea's frisbees! i like fire and fire designs so but it's a little awkward looking 8/10
Lost Memory: ok so first off WINGS. EXCELLENT. love that the only color is the heart. very cool and epic but i don't understand why it doesn't have a reverse grip handle. or the pointy bit at the tip. but still 10/10
Void Gear: hiii vanitas :) so anyway in my totally unbiased opinion this is the best keyblade ever obviously. love the gears and red accents and it's just super cool. the eyes and chains... vanitas character development keyblade when <3 10/10
Void Gear (White?): still very cool, love the simple contrast going on. 10/10
No Name: i didn't know this one was also called no name which is kinda lame. but i love the keyblade it's very cool. super glowy and i love the time design. 9/10
Crown Unlimit: I almost really like this one. very neat design, love the crowns and twists and glow. 7/10
Master's Defender: literally so plain and boring. i don't care if that's the point give it some frills. nice design though :/ 7/10
Broken Xblade: love the broken bits and the weird rust color. wish one of the kingdom keys was more broken and i think the top bit should be broken too. 7/10
Wooden Keyblade: sobbing and crying and tears. this is literally so cute and good and i love that it looks like Ends of the earth. or the kingdom key i guess. 10/10
Treasure Trove: i never expect to like this one but it's actually pretty nice :) wish the gems looked like they were spilling from the top and not leaking from the bottom. 8/10
Stroke of Midnight: also surprisingly nice! the guard kinda looks like a pumpkin which is cute. just a very cute design. 8/10
Fairy Stars: rad as hell. absolutely love this design very appealing. like how point the stars are. 9/10
Victory Line: i hate this one. maybe bc i don't like the world. kinda ugly and the teeth look awkward. 3/10
Mark of a Hero: ok we brought the clouds back but the weirdly buff trophy arm fucks this up. the blade is also just kind of a column, nothing going on there. 4/10
Hyperdrive: super cute!! love how the blade looks like laser fire and engine streams. the teeth are weird again though, and the handle looks like a bee 8/10
Pixie Petal: SO much better than fairy harp. this one is very cute and these teeth actually fit with the rest of the design. kinda short though >:/ 7/10
Sweetstack: oh this is so cute. a bunch of ice cream scoops!! why are the teeth oranges and what are some of those flavors. why are cones on the guard soft serve. 8/10
Ultima Weapon bbs: NICE. A SWORD WITH SOME FILIGREE BUT ALL IN BLUE. LOVE the wayfinders on it, very good for them. wish it wasn't just blue since it seems so aqua-centric but it looks nice soo 10/10

You enjoyed playing with the foamy bubbles in the large bath that Miyoung had prepared for you, even letting her wash and brush your hair for you. You suspected it must have been odd for her, but you had absolutely no interest in covering up your body from anyone’s eyes—though you did wonder about the new anatomy of your body.
Especially the thing between your two legs. When you thought of how much you missed Hoseok, it felt strange. You didn’t know if that was normal. And you hated yourself for how it felt the same way when you thought of Jungkook, too. You guessed it must be normal, but you also supposed that it would be too weird to ask one of the humans about it, so you resolved to figure it out yourself later.
For now, you frolicked about in your new room, a clean and lengthy dress fitted around your frame. You cocked your head at yourself in the long mirror, proud at yourself for being able to remain steady on your feet now.
There was a knock on the door of your room. You cleared your throat, a slight tickle in the back of it; you must be catching something from your unfamiliar surroundings. You turned toward the door, letting a smile form on your lips.
“Come in,” you called softly.
The door opened and Miyoung peeked her head slightly into the room, returning your smile. “It’s time to eat, my dear,” she said. You couldn’t help letting your smile grow, your stomach grumbling quietly. “I’ll escort you down to the dining hall.”
“Will Jungkook be joining me?” you asked curiously, slipping some of the shoes she’d given you earlier onto your feet. You curled your toes a bit, unused to the strange feelings. She’d given you flat shoes, as the two of you had discovered that your already precarious center of balance was made worse when you wore the same heeled shoes that other ladies you’d seen wore.
“You will be joining Prince Jungkook, yes,” she replied, a slightly chiding tone in her voice. You pretended to be embarrassed, fluttering your lashes innocently. So the rules up on land about titles and such remained the same as they did in Atlantica. You would file that away for later. “I am certain he is already seated and waiting for you.”
The two of you made your way down the hall and the wide staircase, Miyoung and yourself smiling widely at the lack of need for help. You still had to walk slowly down them for fear of falling onto your face, but now you didn’t need to grip anyone to walk along. As you neared the dining hall, you could hear many voices and laughter, along with faint clanging.
Miyoung gestured for you to go in and take a seat at the large table. You immediately spotted Jungkook among the many other people, his hand gripping a silver-colored tool that you’d seen before on your adventures into shipwrecks. He used the tool to put food into his mouth slowly, his eyes darting between the two people talking to him. He was seated at the head of the table and you spotted an empty seat beside him.
Many other humans were seated at the table, having their own conversations that you didn’t care to listen to. Seizing your chance, you walked swiftly over to Jungkook’s side and took the seat open next to him, not at the head of the table but right at the edge of the side. His gaze snapped over to you and he took in your much less disshelved appearance with an appreciative look.
Jungkook seemed to cut off the conversation he’d been in before, turning to face you completely. A servant placed a covered plate in front of you, lifting the top to reveal delicious smelling food underneath—you took in the scent, unused to it.
“Are you feeling better?” he asked you quietly.
You smiled and tried not to make it noticeable when you copied the way he held the tool in his hand, eyes darting around briefly before settling on his face.
“Yes, thank you,” you said. You batted your lashes at him. “I don’t know what would have become of me without your help, my prince.”
“Please,” he replied smoothly. “Make no mention of it. How could I leave a beautiful maiden like yourself all alone?”
You gripped the metal in your hand a little tighter, inclining your head as respectfully as you could. “You flatter me.”
There was a lull in conversation as Jungkook leaned back in his chair, eyes slowly drifting away from you as other people attempted to get his attention. You took the opportunity to sneak a glance at the people beside you to see how they used the sharper object to cut into the meat. You copied their motions, a little sloppier than them, and shoveled the hot food into your mouth. You tried not to show how affected you were, slowly eating whatever it was they had cooked.
After most of the people had finished and more food had been brought out—these having a particularly sweet taste that made you drool a bit—the conversations had lulled a bit. A butler had come to stand slightly behind Jungkook’s chair and glanced at you before leaning down a bit.
“Your Highness,” the old man said, a small smile on his face as Jungkook looked up at him questioningly. “Might I suggest a tour of the town for our lovely guest?”
Jungkook’s eyes widened a bit and he turned to look at you. “Would that interest you?”
You nodded excitedly. “Yes, I would love to see everything in town. If it’s not a bother to you, of course—!”
He shook his head to stop you. “No, no, it would be my pleasure. Then, let us go tomorrow. It will be getting dark soon, and I would hate to rush you.”
You had to hold back the grumble. Another day to wait. “Of course,” you said pleasantly.
Jungkook stood from his seat and the others quickly got to their feet as well. You copied them, a little belatedly, but commended yourself on being able to stand on your feet without falling over. “If you’ll excuse me,” Jungkook told the guests clearly. “I’ll be retiring for the evening.”
Everyone bowed briefly and you did as well, looking up to watch him walk away from the table and out of the hall. He disappeared around the corner and everyone started their conversations back up. You couldn’t help but notice the new ease with which they held themselves, no longer putting on a show for royalty.
You slowly moved away from the table and walked out as well, looking around the castle as you made your way slowly to your room. Letting your fingertips graze the wooden tables and glass trinkets atop them, you sighed and took in the new sensations. Thoughts of Hoseok flitted to your mind and you sighed even deeper, wishing you had some way to send word that you were okay and working on getting back. You knew everyone must be worried for your safety.
If only you hadn’t gone out to the ships.
Somehow, you found yourself walking out into a courtyard of some kind. You peeked out and saw nobody around in the setting sky and empty yard. The grass was slightly damp. You walked out farther and found yourself at a shoreline, the vast ocean glittering back at you.
You slipped your shoes off and lifted the hem of your dress so that you could dip your feet into the cold water. You let your eyes flutter shut—you had missed the feel of the water on your skin. Your head tilted back slightly as you breathed in the fresh air, letting the water rolling over your feet soothe you. You could almost trick yourself into thinking you were a mermaid again, just taking in the surface air briefly before dipping back down into the depths of the ocean.
A frenzied bark and familiar voice startled you out of your imagination and you had barely managed to turn to face the source of the sounds before something hard barreled into you, knocking you down into the water. You let out a soft sound and caught yourself on your elbows, face buried in fabric and a heavy weight settling on top of you.
You blinked up at Jungkook, whose coat had been shed at some point, leaving him only in a loose white shirt that exposed more of his chest than you’d seen before.
He hurried to get off of you, but his little dog—you’d been reading a few of the books that you had found earlier after your bath to familiarize with the terms humans used— jumped around him, splashing the two of you with water. You couldn’t help but giggle as he tried to chastise the small creature.
Jungkook shifted slightly and you were suddenly very aware of the position the two of you were currently in. You looked up at him, startled, when you felt his thigh brush the skin of your own, the hem of your now drenched dress climbing higher than humans considered proper.
He didn’t seem to notice, still trying to get his pet to stop excitedly jumping on him so that he could move. Your cheeks felt warm and you bit the inside of your cheek, the thing between your legs throbbing. It was a very strange feeling. You found yourself hoping that he would move his thigh higher, closer to that place that was tingling.
“I’m sorry—” Jungkook started, a laugh in his voice, but he trailed off abruptly as he faced you, his nose nearly brushing yours. Your lips parted and you blinked up at him slowly, almost feeling an electricity charging between you. His dark eyes were wide as he stared down at you, his palms holding himself up on either side of your body, effectively keeping you trapped underneath him.
His eyes darted down to your lips and the sea witch’s cackling voice echoed in your head. You let your tongue peek out to wet your lips, enjoying the way his Adam’s apple bobbed as he swallowed. He kept his eyes on your ready lips and you started to lean up slowly, not wanting to startle him.
Kiss me, you urged silently. Please kiss me.
Jungkook shifted forward barely a centimeter, eyes half-lidded. You were afraid of even breathing wrong. You felt the barest brush of his lips against yours before he jerked back, falling back into the water in front of you. You waited for a few seconds before moving, but there was nothing.
You clucked your tongue quietly and tried to school your features into embarrassment when you looked at Jungkook. Lowering your legs into the water, you pushed yourself up so that you were in a seated position, staring at him and waiting for him to make a move.
He sputtered, cheeks pink, and hurried to his feet, splashing the water around him. Holding out a hand to you, he cleared his throat. You sighed and took his hand, letting him pull you up to your feet. “Sorry,” he repeated, voice much softer now. You strained to smile at him, trying not to let your frustrations get the better of you. Maybe the kiss had been too brief to be considered the type of kiss that would break the sea witch's curse.
“No, I'm sorry, Prince Jungkook,” you said, noticing that he kept his soft grip on your hand between the two of you. “I should have moved out of the way.”
He shook his head, droplets of water slipping from his red tipped hair onto his skin and traveling down in a way that was too tantalizing to ignore. You allowed your eyes to follow the drops of water as they trailed down his face to his neck and chest. You snapped your eyes back up to his face, embarrassed.
“Please, you're being too kind,” he told you gently. “I should have been watching where I was going.” Your strained smile softened into a real one and you shifted a bit, the fabric of your dress clinging to your skin uncomfortably. “What were you doing out here?”
Your mouth opened and closed, unsure of what to say to him. You couldn't exactly say you were homesick and that you were trying to feel closer to home under the sea.
“I like the water,” you told him hesitantly. “My home, it's... Like this place. Surrounded by the ocean. Even though the waves took down my ship, I still love the ocean.”
Jungkook's eyes were almost sparkling as he listened to you. “I see,” he said thoughtfully. “I love the water, too. There's just something very freeing about being in the open sea.” You nodded your head and then a silence engulfed the two of you. As if realizing that the two of you were just staring at one another, Jungkook cleared his throat and released your hand, stepping away from you to put room between the two of you. “Well, I'll let you get back. It wouldn't do to have you catch a cold.”
You smiled and nodded your head. You were feeling a little odd, especially your throat. “Thank you. Goodnight, Prince Jungkook.”
“Goodnight,” he returned softly. “I'll see you tomorrow.”
You turned away from him and started to get out of the water. Slipping your shoes back on, you allowed yourself to look over your shoulder to see him playing with Gureum in the shallow water. Hurrying inside, you winced as you dripped water everywhere and just hoped nobody would see you trudging along to your room.
Once you made it safely inside, you stripped your wet dress off along with the undergarments that Miyoung had dressed you in and threw them over the chair at the desk. You kicked your shoes off, too, and then dropped yourself onto the bed. You didn't bother wearing anything, even though you knew Miyoung had put some nightgowns in the dressers when she realized you had nothing with you.
The sheets felt nice and cool against your bare skin and you stretched out your body before slipping underneath the covers. Everything in the human world was so comfortable, you couldn't help but enjoy yourself even though you wished for nothing but to get back home.
There was a throb between your legs when you remembered how close you had been to going back home just now. You let yourself picture Jungkook's lips—even as your heart twinged—and guilt flooded your body. You squeezed your thighs shut when your imaginary Jungkook pressed his lips harshly against yours and pushed you down into the shallow water. His lips were hungry and soft on your mouth.
Squeezing felt good. With a start, you realized that one of your hands had found its way down between your thighs and you hesitantly pressed against it. You were surprised to find it slick and sticky, clearly not from the water you'd been sitting in.
With quickening breaths, you pictured that it was Jungkook's strong thigh pressing against you there instead of your fingers. You were almost panting now, the image in your mind vivid. His hands cupped your breasts and his thigh rubbed against that spot the way your palm was, pleasure shooting into your abdomen.
Jungkook's tongue licked your lips and then slipped into your mouth and one more rub had you feeling an ecstasy that you'd never felt before. Your mouth opened and a quiet moan slipped out, though your voice cracked. Your hips rocked up into your hand, chasing the feeling, and when it was over you found yourself sweaty and panting heavily.
You turned over to grab some of the tissues—at least, that's what you thought they were called—on the small piece of furniture beside the bed. You cleaned off the sticky stuff from your hand and then wiped yourself clean between your legs, surprised at whatever that wet stuff was. Did all humans feel that good with the thing down there? You threw the tissues away and then curled up under the covers, letting your heavy eyelids flutter shut and the sound of the waves outside lull you to sleep.
Tumblr media
You woke up feeling refreshed and excited, even though your throat was tight and itchy. No amount of clearing it or coughing could get rid of the hoarseness of your voice, but you supposed it was some effect of being on land.
Once you had readied yourself, stepping into your flat shoes again, you rushed to the door and nearly ripped it open. You were going to get that kiss today. You were determined. After all, how hard could it be to enchant a human prince? He already seemed to be a bit taken with you, if the previous night had been any indication.
You nearly bumped right into said prince’s chest right outside of your doorway. You looked up with wide eyes, lips parting in surprise as Jungkook’s hands steadied you gently.
“Prince Jungkook!” you exclaimed, voice scratchy. You winced, a hand lifting up to lightly tough your throat.
Jungkook’s brows furrowed. “Ah, good morning. How did you sleep?”
“I slept fine, thank you,” you replied, trying not to grimace this time at how your voice sounded. It was almost like it was gone. “And yourself?”
“Yes, I did as well,” he told you distractedly. “Are you feeling alright? You sound a bit under the weather.”
“Oh, yes, I’m fine!” you said. “I’m sure my voice will be back to normal by the end of the day.”
He nodded, though he didn’t seem to believe you completely. “It must be from the water last night.” Jungkook’s cheeks tinged pink and he cleared his throat, stepping a little bit away from you. You tried not to pout. “I do apologize for what happened.”
You waved him off. “It’s fine, please. Will we be going on our tour today?”
Jungkook smiled at you and then offered you his arm. You gladly took it, sidling up close to his side as he escorted you down the hall toward the stairs. “Yes, we’ll go after breakfast, if that’s fine with you.”
You silently appreciated his slow pace as the two of you descended the steps. “That sounds lovely. I almost couldn’t sleep from how excited I was to see the town.” A little lie wouldn’t hurt.
After a quick breakfast with a few other people—you still had no idea who they were, but since they seemed fancily dressed like Jungkook was, you assumed they were of similarly important status as him—the two of you made your way outside of the castle and into a carriage. You were surprised that Jungkook hadn’t brought his pet along with him, but you couldn’t say you were disappointed about it.
You were a bit surprised, however, when Jungkook waved away the man who was going to come with the two of you and opted to navigate himself. He took the straps of the creatures that pulled the carriage and snapped them gently, the two animals beginning a slow walk. You spent the first few moments of the ride gripping the cushions underneath you until you got used to it and relaxed.
Jungkook had relaxed as well, shedding his jacket and remaining in only a loose white shirt tucked into his pants. You allowed your eyes to take in his form discreetly, appreciating his looks.
Once the two of you were in a much more populated area, Jungkook stopped the carriage and hopped out of it, offering you his hand and helping you out as well. Curiously, he held your hand for a few beats longer than what was proper and you gave him a look, letting a small smirk find its way to your lips.
He dropped your hand as if it had started to burn him and then pointed toward one of the stands. You wanted to chuckle at his embarrassment, but said nothing of it as you followed him.
Jungkook bought a delicious smelling food from the stand and handed you one with a tissue of some kind—it was rougher than the ones on the stand by your bed. You cocked your head and tried to discreetly observe him as he ate and wiped his mouth and hands with the tissue. You copied his movements, but one bite of the sweet food had you nearly ravenous.
For all their poorer qualities, one thing humans had mastered was the art of food.
You would never be able to have something like this once you were back home. You ate up everything that Jungkook bought for you, using his coins to trade. He seemed to find how you reacted to the different food amusing.
You spotted a man strumming an instrument and you perked up, eyes widening. His music was beautiful. Jungkook stood beside you, listening along with you and smiling softly. The idea came to you unbidden, prompting you to grab his hand and tug him toward the musician.
“What are you doing?” Jungkook asked you quickly, trying to stop you.
He was no match for your determination. You turned to face him and held his hands in yours. “Dance with me!” you said, ignoring how softly your voice came out—you could barely hear it.
With a sigh, Jungkook relented and helped you move along with him to the upbeat strum of strings. Seeing the two of you smiling and twirling around, the musician changed his song to a much slower one, clearly meant for lovers. You internally thanked the human man as Jungkook pulled you in close, one of his hands falling to rest on your hip. His other hand shifted yours to rest in his gently and you placed your free hand on his shoulder.
“How are you enjoying our little town, so far?” the human prince asked you.
“It’s quite the beauty,” you replied softly, wishing your voice would come back. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”
At your words, Jungkook tilted his head to the side curiously. “You’re so strange. I wonder what it’s like where you come from.”
You didn’t reply, smiling nervously at him instead. He swayed the both of you along for a few more moments of silence, the sounds of the market and music filling your ears. You listened to the indistinguishable voices of the humans around you, but you kept your eyes on Jungkook’s. He was staring at you oddly, unlike he had before. It reminded you of the way he looked at you when he was on top of you in the water, lips almost touching yours.
You clenched your thighs, tingling all over.
The song came to a beautiful end and the two of you slowed to a stop, moving away from one another only at the small applause of the few people that had stopped to watch you and listen to the music. Jungkook released you completely with a sheepish smile and walked over to the musician, dropping a few of his pretty coins into the hat beside the man.
“Let’s get going, shall we?” Jungkook said when he returned to you, offering you his arm.
You gladly took it, nodding your head. He showed you a few more places in the market, mostly shops with clothes and other things, like things called books. You had asked a multitude of questions, not caring how strange or suspicious they might sound; those things and water did not mix well, so there were no such things in Atlantica. You wanted to learn all you could, even as you tried to get home.
Eventually, Jungkook led you to a small boat in a lagoon. You perked up with happiness, missing the water immensely. He paid the man with the boats, ignoring the color flushing on Jungkook’s cheeks and neck when the man called you ‘lovers.’
You climbed into the boat before Jungkook, and he settled on the opposite side of you, taking the wooden things on either side and pushing them in circular movements to glide you farther into the water. You looked around at the beautiful scenery, taking it all in.
“Do you often come here?” you asked as loudly as you could with your broken voice, the sounds of the water calming and familiar.
Jungkook slowed his movements as the two of you neared more beautiful areas, letting the boat glide along the water’s surface naturally. “Not to this lagoon, but I love the ocean.”
You perked up. “You do?”
He nodded, meeting your eyes. “I do. I love the freedom of being at sea. Never knowing what you’ll encounter and facing your fears. Being in the ocean lets me forget my worries and just be me, for a time.”
“Wow,” you breathed. “That’s a very beautiful thought.” You paused, remembering the sea witch dragging him through the depths. “But aren’t you afraid of the danger of it?”
Jungkook hummed, letting the silence settle for a few moments. The boat floated along by colorful and beautiful flowers, lilypads, and trees with vines dipping into the water. It was almost the perfect view, illuminating the human prince in an ethereal way, as if he was more than human.
“I suppose,” he finally answered. “I actually had quite the misfortune strike me a few days ago. Our ship caught aflame and we had to abandon it—we had been fishing for something in particular.” His eye had a strange glint, but he didn’t go into detail about what it was they were looking for. “I nearly drowned.”
You swallowed, suddenly nervous as he peered into your face. For a moment, you could almost swear he would recognize you. “What happened?” you asked quietly, unable to help yourself.
“Someone saved me,” Jungkook said wistfully, though his eyes narrowed at you. “Whoever she was, I owe her my life. My friend called me a fool, saying no woman had been in my vicinity when they’d found me on the shore, but I know she’s real.”
You fidgeted with your hands. The atmosphere around the two of you was suddenly heavy with something that you could almost taste. “I’m sure she’s happy that she was able to help you.”
Jungkook nodded his head absentmindedly. “Yes, surely. I just hope one day I’ll be able to thank her.”
Finally, his eyes trailed away from you to take in the view instead. You let out a small breath of relief. Then the boat shifted to the side slightly and you were startled, grabbing the sides as you almost fell in the water.
“Careful!” Jungkook called out, reaching for you and holding you by one arm. You smiled gratefully at him, but then the current jerked the boat again and you fell forward a bit, closer to the prince.
His eyes were trained on yours and then they flickered down to your lips. You swallowed and your heart started to beat harder. Jungkook leaned in closer to you, watching your parted lips as he moved. You could feel his breath on your face.
Jerking away, you cleared your throat and dislodged his hand from your arm. Sitting back properly in your spot, you could feel your neck and face growing hot with embarrassment.
“We should probably return, Prince Jungkook,” you mumbled, unable to meet his eyes.
He nodded his head at your words. “You’re right, they’ll be wondering what’s taking us so long.” He picked up the wooden things again and started to row the boat back to where you two had gotten on, his arms working and drawing your gaze to them.
When you stepped out of the boat, Jungkook stopped you from walking away with a hand on your wrist, holding you lightly. You whirled around to look at him, eyes wide. “Yes, Prince Jungkook?” you breathed, heart beating wildly in your chest.
The look on his face was hard to decipher. “Call me Jungkook,” he finally said, voice soft enough that you had to strain to hear him.
“Okay,” you replied, just as softly. “Let’s head back, Jungkook.”
The prince smiled sheepishly at you and nodded, releasing your wrist from his gentle hold and walking forward. Before you turned away from the water, you caught a glimpse of something shifting in it. You squinted and strained your eyes, wondering if your eyes were starting to play tricks on you.
Then you gasped when you saw what it had been.
Hoseok’s face just barely popping out of the surface of the water, peeking at you with an unreadable expression.

Simple and Clean: The Kingdom Hearts Conundrum
Well it looks like the hype of the release of Kingdom Hearts 3 has calmed down significantly, mostly due to the fact that the game is considered by many to be lackluster. As for myself, I have finished my first playthrough of the game, on proud mode, and done most of the side quests, and while I did like my experience overall, I can’t really refute the criticisms the game has gotten and have to agree that Kingdom Hearts 3 is a disappointment.
I suppose I can’t be too surprised with how the third game in the franchise turned out considering the direction the series has been on since the second game which is actually the third game released but due the number placed at the title the game is still the second game, and I’ll just stop right now before I go on a tangent over the names of each game.
Kingdom Hearts, to me, is a series that captivated me right at the very beginning. I love Kingdom Hearts 1. It’s probably in my Top 20 favorite games of all time. The game managed to encapsulate the whimsy and charm of Disney, while delivering an epic, yet simplistic tale of adventure, light vs darkness, and friendship. The game was fun to play, and the story kept me engaged to the post credits scene. To this day, the game is still one that I would gladly replay and enjoy in its entirety.
Can’t say the same for the other games.
I know, I’m in the minority here on this, but in my opinion, the Kingdom Hearts series peaked with the original game from 2002 while all subsequent games have struggled under lackluster levels, a combat system that favors style over substance, and a convoluted plot with dull, heavy-handed dialog. Heck, a lot of what made Kingdom Hearts 3 such a disappointment to many players can be found in Kingdom Hearts 2 and (to a lesser extent) Birth by Sleep, the two games fans say are the pinnacle of the series.
Now I’m not simply here to say that I like this game over that game end it there. I’m going to explain why I think the Kingdom Hearts 1 (or KH1) is my favorite game in the series while putting into words my disappointment with the later games in the franchise, particularly KH2 and Birth by Sleep. This is going to be a long one so just get yourself comfortable and wait until you finish reading my post before you comment. Let’s go over why Kingdom Hearts 1 is the best in the franchise.
First things first, let’s discuss the levels in these games. The worlds of KH1 are a lot of fun to explore. While not exactly Thief II: The Metal Age complex, they were expansive and navigating them was more than just going from point A to point B. Some of the worlds were almost maze like in their design. There were light puzzle elements to most of the worlds. There was even platforming that, while clunky, added some variety to each level. These different elements made the moment to moment gameplay more than just brawling and therefore playing KH1 never got stale.
It’s quite a different story for the other games. The worlds in the latter games are straight forward in their design. The worlds were usually a singular pathway with the occasional branching off into a mini path, (Enchanted Domain, KH2’s Halloween Town), or central hub area that branches into three-four linear pathways (Beast’s Castle). Just look at the maps of Agrabah from KH1 and KH2 to see the downgrade firsthand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Not only did the levels lack complex designs, they also had little to no puzzles in them and instead of tweaking the platforming to make it less clunky, the worlds minimize or flat out remove platforming all together. This resulted in worlds where you mostly just walk and fight.
Now these games are not simply all combat. There is something added that is intended to break the monotony, and it’s one of the most out of place aspects of the game; the forced minigames.
To be fair, having minigames isn’t a bad thing in and of itself, even if its put into the main campaign/quest. Games like Jak and Daxter and Donkey Kong 64 have plenty of minigames, however most of them are optional to beat the game. Finishing DK64 requires 50% of golden bananas and minigames give roughly 25% of golden bananas. Final Fantasy IX and Skyward Sword have the player do a minigame, but it lasts for 2-5 minutes out of a 35+ hour campaign and serve more to entice players to do a side quest. Even KH1, the only moments that feel like the game forces you to do a minigame like activity were the race against Rikku at Destiny Islands, the 1 minute of vine surfing at the start of Deep Jungle, and the 2-minute magic carpet escape at the end of Agrabah.
The other Kingdom Hearts games are not as stingy with minigames. As each world progresses, minigame after minigame is dumped on the player. KH2 is one of the worst offenders of this. It doesn’t help that these minigames, unlike the ones from DK64 and Final Fantasy IX, don’t provide a real break from the endless stream of battles. The majority of minigames are just regular fights with an arbitrary stipulation added to it; fight the enemies before the timer runs out, fight the enemies until the timer runs out, fight the enemies while collecting some orbs, fight the enemies while filling the bar onscreen, fight the enemies while depleting the bar onscreen, fight the enemies while escorting a slow ass character. It’s all just more fighting, and it even spills over to some of the bosses as well.
Even the minigames that aren’t centered around fighting, like the rhythm games in Atlantica, are too shallow to provide any sense of fulfillment while playing them. Subsequent Kingdom Hearts games aren’t exempt from this. From Birth by Sleep’s Disney Town world being dedicated to minigames, to the shallow imitation of Nintendogs in Dream Drop Distance, these games also have the same minigame issue that KH2 has.
I have talked about how the games became more combat oriented, however I haven’t really discussed combat itself. This is probably the part where I’ll get the most flack.
Combat in KH1 is a lot of fun and the highlight of the game alongside its story. While basic at first, the fighting gets more complex with the addition of special moves, extra combos, spells, and summons adding variety to the system. Plus, different enemies and bosses a certain attacks and weaknesses. Mashing the x button repeatedly will not get you far, you will have to think and be strategic during battle.
The later games, however, do not have strategy in their combat. Sure, you have different options with drive forms, shot locks, trinity limits, and other sorts of abilities, but at the end of the day, combat from KH2 onward is mostly whaling on the attack button over and over again. The amount of enemies that require certain strategies to defeat them diminish, dodging becomes practically unnecessary, and combat becomes simplified as a whole
Drive forms and trinity limits require little to no strategy when using them. Just activate them and mash buttons while your character zips their way through the battlefield while all sorts of flashy effects fill the screen and enemies go down without a fight. How fortunate that certain abilities could only be unlocked when the player fights with each drive form for a certain amount of time. Forced grinding, what a treat.
The worst offender of this is the context sensitive “reaction commends” that can clear waves of enemies and knock out a huge portion of the bosses’ health. Sometimes it’s the only way to defeat certain bosses. All the player must do during these reaction commands is simple press the triangle button over and over. It’s like a quicktime event only virtually impossible to fail at. There’s a reason why the phrase “press triangle to win” exists.
Magic also got a downgrade as the series progressed. In KH1, magic was not always at your disposal. When your MP got depleted, the player (or companions) would have to use an elixir/ether or land enough melee strikes on enemies to replenish your magic. Despite that, spells and summons were incredibly useful in battle, as well as for environmental puzzles, and the proper use of magic could mean the difference between success and failure.
In the later Kingdom Hearts games, the inverse seemed to be true for magic. Not only were puzzles that require spells became almost nonexistent, removing more variety in level design, but spells and summons became less effective in battle. In KH1, the player could focus on spellcasting, while doing the occasional melee attacks, and get through the game with relative ease. In later games, due to how magic became nerfed, using magic primarily was more of a self-imposed hinderance rather than an alternative style of play. This results in the player using magic almost exclusively for healing. Lucky for those players, MP automatically regenerates after depletion at a relatively quick rate, making ethers useless, which gives the player an unlimited amount of heals.
After KH2’s release, with the emphasis on style over substance, combat in Kingdom Hearts games became more about how to make the player look cool while fighting rather than making the player feel good after the fight.
The reason why it felt good to complete a battle in KH1; the game was actually difficult. Enemies and bosses didn’t just let you pummel them with combos and stylized forms. You had to react to the enemies and the arena you fought in. Even to this day, fights against Clayton, Ursula, Maleficent (human and dragon), possessed Rikku, many more bosses still put me on edge as I fight them.
There was no challenge to the fights in games like KH2 and Birth by Sleep. Since the player has multiples ways to dispose of an enemy, virtually endless amount of heals, and less adversaries that require any strategy outside of “hit me a bunch of times until I no longer exist”, they face little to no challenge while playing latter day Kingdom Hearts games. Bosses that make creative use of the environment you fight are less frequent too. The only way a boss can begin to test the player is when a minigame-like stipulation is added to the fight. Stipulations such as kill all the water clones in this time limit, put the coins in the chest before you can do damage, whatever the heck the Luxord fight was supposed to be, and so on and so forth.
Even then, I still didn’t get that much of a challenge. After three playthroughs of KH2, two of which were on Proud/Critical mode, the combined total of times I died does not even come close to a quarter of the amount of times I died in my first playthrough of KH1. I never even died during KH2’s Sephiroth fight, and I still struggle to defeat him in KH1’s proud mode. The other games provide even less challenge outside of a few endgame/postgame bosses.
And before you reply, the re-releases did not remedy this issue. In fact, the re-release of KH2 gave the player new abilities that allowed the player to cheese his/her way through some boss fights.
Now I have talked about the level design, the moment to moment gameplay, and the difficulty. I supposed that leaves us with the plot of these games.
Do I even have to explain why KH1 has the superior story?
KH1 had a simple yet effective hero’s journey story about a child who wanted to explore the various worlds with his friends but got more than he bargained for when his home is engulfed in darkness and he’s separated from his friends. He goes to various worlds, forms friendships with numerous people, and learns about his newfound abilities as well as the forces that try to stop him on his quest to find his friends. It’s not the most complex of narratives and that’s all for the better. The amount of exposition is kept to a relative minimum, characters can breathe and are not just there to explain the situation, dialogue was never forced or awkward, each world had their own mini-story that’s both entertaining and connects to the overarching plot, and the story is self-contained, no outside material required to understand what’s going on.
You know the pattern by now, but I still need to elaborate. For some reason, Square-Enix thought that they could pull off this grand epic saga spread over multiple games, well they couldn’t. KH2’s plot is a total mess. It’s a constant bombardment of new ideas, exposition dumps, vague allusions to events from games that weren’t even released yet. It was bad enough that the player had to have played a GBA spinoff in order to understand a lot of the plot, but the narrative was so muddled with inconsistencies and unexplained concepts that two more spinoffs had to be made in order for KH2’s plot to make some sort of sense, even then the plot is still convoluted and heavy-handed.
I’ve seen spiderwebs that have less interwoven parts than the plot of Kingdom Hearts, and far fewer holes as well.
And no, this does not make the story “complex and deep”. While I expect a game called Kingdom Hearts 2 would require me to play the first game in order to get a clear understanding of the plot, that doesn’t excuse having to play multiple spinoffs just to get a iota of a clue of what the heck is going on. The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, one of the most celebrated series of books ever, contained an epic tale of war across multiple kingdoms and fleshed out worlds with history and culture. Even then, the reader didn’t have to refer to The Hobbit or The Silmarillion in order to follow the plot of the novels. That’s mainly due to the fact that J.R.R. Tolkien, unlike Tetsuya Nomura, can actually write an overarching story.
There’s also the fact that a lot of the plot in these games feels like filler. In KH2, the first visits to most of the worlds don’t connect to the main plot about the nobodies and Organization XIII. It’s not until the second visit to Radient Gardens where the plot starts to get rolling. In Birth by Sleep, almost all of Aqua’s campaign feel inconsequential until the very end. You could cut her story and have her just be a side character in Ventus and Terra’s campaigns and not much would be lost, plot wise.
The reason why I find a lot of the plot to be filler is due to the stories of most of these worlds are retellings of the Disney movies they’re based on while having little connection to the game’s main plot. In KH1, the stories of the worlds were mostly original tales that were intertwined with the game’s main plot. Whether it was dealing with Maleficent’s group of villains, the search for King Mickey, Rikku, and Kairi along with the rivalry between Sora and Rikku, learning more about the keyblade and its various abilities, visiting each world moved the main plot forward while having fun mini-narratives of their own. Even worlds like Wonderland, Deep Jungle, and Neverland focused more on one scene/act from the movie and expanding on it rather than rushing through the cliff notes of the source material.
It seems like for the other games, Nomura just copied and pasted the scripts of the movies the worlds a based on, added interjections from Sora, and called it an original story. It sticks out like a sore thumb and makes visits to these worlds feel more like distractions than anything else.
This longwinded plot also extends to the dialogue. The dialogue in KH1 was natural, aside from a few moments of emphasizing the difference between light and darkness. Characters acted normally, they had actual personalities and chemistry with each other. That was because KH1’s plot was not domineering to the point where the characters were relegated to just be vessels meant to explain the narrative. In games like KH2, conversations don’t feel like a group of people talking amongst themselves but rather like a lecture that the player needs to pay attention to. It makes a large chunk of scenes drag on for what feels like an eternity.
The fact that characters feel more like lore dispensers than actual people leads me to my next point, I don’t care about these new characters. Almost every character introduced from Chain of Memories onward has left little to no impact on me.
Organization XIII are a bunch of cliché Shonen Jump villains, either cackling at how evil they are or brooding over something quasi-poetic until the main character comes in and inevitably defeats them.
Roxas got a 2-hour prologue in KH2 in order for the player to get to know him and I was more relieved than upset whenever he “sacrificed” himself in order for Sora to wake up. Even 358/2 Days couldn‘t get me to care for this guy.
Xion exists solely to die at the end of 358/2 days and then be resurrected in Dream Drop Distance, that’s it.
Hayner, Pence, and Olette are like the annoying group of kids you’re forced to hang out with during college orientation, then they think you want to spend more time with them afterwards.
Ventus, Terra, and Aqua might’ve been interesting characters if we had more than 10 minutes dedicated to their friendship and personalities. Birth by Sleep is so focused on explaining the origins of Xehanort, the ways of the keyblade master, and linking its plot to the overarching plot of the series, that I never find myself connecting to any of the characters. The three separate campaigns don’t do the plot any favors. In fact, it makes the story seem disjointed. To be honest, when the characters were either killed, possessed, or banished to the Realm of Darkness, I did not care in the slightest.
It doesn’t help that Tetsuya Nomura can only seem to write 4 or 5 kinds of original characters, resulting in everyone being a Xehanort/Ansem clone or a copycat of the Sora, Kairi, Rikku dynamic. Seriously, the amount of Sora clones in this franchise is absurd.
The worse thing about these new characters is that Square seems convinced that the general audience needs more of them and forces them into the plot at the expense of characters we already have investment in.
The most egregious example of this happens at the end KH2 when during the final fight against Xemnas, rather than allowing the player to use Donald and Goofy, the game forces you to use only Rikku in the fight.
I don’t care that it’s meant to serve as Rikku’s redemption. He seemed to have redeemed himself with his self-sacrifice at the end of the first game. I don’t care about that stupid reaction command in the middle of the battle looks cool. It’s just another example of the game preferring style over substance. I don’t care that I get to fight with Rikku. I want Donald and Goofy.
I know we play as Sora and therefore focus on building his stats/abilities, but we put almost as much time into Donald and Goofy while we played the game. The player had to find the best equipment, do the side quests in order to obtain their ultimate weapon, mastered their trinity limits, managed their A.I. to suit the player’s needs in battle. Then the game rewards your dedication to these characters by saying “Screw you! Here’s a premade character with a default weapon you can’t change, and you only have the final level to learn how he is like in combat. You’re gonna love it.”
I’m sorry, but for an RPG to do that is inexcusable. Imagine in an Elder Scrolls game, before the final part of the main quest, your character is killed, and you must play as a premade Dark Elf Mage for the rest of the game. How about in Persona 5 before the last boss, instead of the Phantom Thieves, Joker gets a party consisting of some random side characters you barely interacted with in the game. Would anyone defend that design choice then?
The fact that I’m forced to only use Rikku in the fight, alongside how easy it is, makes the final battle against Xemnas in KH2 one of the worst final bosses in gaming, in my opinion.
I’ve been ranting about KH2, Birth by Sleep, 358/2 Days, Chain of Memories, but I haven’t talked specifically about Kingdom Hearts 3. KH3 is a weird case because it fixed some issues that I had with the later Kingdom Hearts games while doubling down on the issues it didn’t fix and adding new issues altogether.
KH3’s level design is improved somewhat. There’s still generally not much to do in the worlds aside from walk, fight, and do a minigame, however the actual levels are more open and intricate compared to KH2 and Birth by Sleep. The presentation is the best in the series, not just the graphical upgrade but also cinematography of the cutscenes and animations are more expressive than in past games. Plus, I got to give the game credit for making me like Axel/Lea, who before was just another forgettable side character.
However, combat is even more style over substance with additions like the Attractions Summons. The minigames are still as intrusive as they are lacking in quality. The retelling of the Disney plots is so bad here that there are literally shot for shot recreations of scenes from the movies with Sora, Donald, and Goofy added in the background. The Frozen and Tangled worlds suffer the most from this. Plus, the Pirates of the Caribbean world is based on the third movie despite the fact that no Kingdom Hearts game covered the second Pirates movie. Good luck understanding that plot without seeing the films. Dialogue is just as mind-numbingly dull. Also, you know how the plots of the latter Kingdom Hearts game can be described as having 30-50% filler, well KH3’s plot is almost 80% filler.
All this is combined with new problems such as combat feeling floatier compared to KH2 and Birth by Sleep, the emphasis on Disney over everything else, and the fact that this supposed “conclusion” to the trilogy didn’t fulfill on all the promises of past games, forgot to fill some of the plot holes, and felt like advertisement for games yet to come, makes it hard for me to say KH3 is a total improvement over the other Kingdom Hearts sequels and spinoffs. In many ways, it’s a downgrade.
You know, it feels like Kingdom Hearts is the Guns and Roses of the video game industry. Their first effort is groundbreaking and makes a huge impact on the scene. Subsequent follow-ups do their best to expand upon the initial outing only to end up with well regarded yet still confused end products. Then a new project is in the works and gets constantly delayed during which a revolving door of crew members tries to salvage the development, all the while a talented yet egomaniacal leader is micromanaging every aspect. Then when the long-awaited product is released, reviewers give mild praise while the general public is disappointed and finds the end result to be a mish mash of disparaging ideas while feeling almost unfinished.
Yes, Kingdom Hearts 3 is Square’s Chinese Democracy.
If I were asked to do a tier list ranking of each game in the series, at this moment, it would look like this.
Tumblr media
This maybe a bit of a surprise to you since I spent the entire time ranting about KH2’s flaws, so let me explain. After playing KH3, I’ve come to notice more of the positive aspects of the second Kingdom Hearts. While I do think that they serve more to make the game easy and hate the excessive grinding that comes with them, the drive forms do give the player a sense of experimentation with some of these fights. In fact, compared to KH3, 2 has more builds for the player, as well as more balanced. KH2 is still easy as heck, and in my opinion inferior to KH1 in almost every way. However, I now appreciate more of the second game’s strong points.
Also, the music is excellent. I think that goes without saying. Yoko Shimomura is a goddess of music.
So as if this entire post hasn’t made it clear already, I love Kingdom Hearts 1. Unlike the other games in the franchise, it knew where to be straightforward and where to have complexity. It had a robust, dynamic combat system, the plot was self-contained and had more personality than exposition, and the gameplay was varied without being diluted. To this day, I find it hard to understand why most Kingdom Hearts fans prefer games like KH2 and Birth by Sleep over the original Kingdom Hearts.
Who knows? Maybe they like the combat to have some flash and felt the fighting in KH1 is too rigid. Maybe they found the puzzles, exploration, and platforming of KH1 to be more akin to fat that had to be trimmed in service to the aspect of the games that they actually like. Maybe they enjoy the plot because it has such a detailed lore and expands the narrative beyond three guys saving the universe from darkness. Maybe they find the new characters charming and enjoy the parallels between them and other characters like Sora and Rikku.
If that’s how they feel, then that’s more than fine. We’re all allowed to have out take on things and no one should tell someone else that they shouldn’t have their opinion.
That being said, in my opinion, while I do enjoy most of the games in the Kingdom Hearts franchise, the only game that I find exceptional is Kingdom Hearts 1.

The way Kingdom Hearts uses "world" as a term is so fucking confusing...
Like first we are presented with the separated worlds that we visit and that basically forms our whole idea of what a world is in this context. Traverse Town is a world. Atlantica is a world. Destiny Islands is a world. The world are separated and only through special means you can reach another.
But then we are presented with the idea of the World. That is all those separate worlds we visit seem to actually be fragments of a single gigantic World that was fragmented long ago. It's almost a term equated with universe or reality.
BUT THEN it seems to imply there are others of these massive Worlds. If i'm not mistaken before they came ur with "worldline" Ava's mission was to lead the Dandelions to "another world". But we know from context that this doesn't mean another self centered world like Twilight Town but another World aka another universe.
Honestly i was kinda "uuuuuugh" with the term worldline being a thing now but in a shocking twist it is much less confusing that this series prior use of "worlds" vs "World". To me it's kinda easier to visualize a second collective of parallel worlds as another "worldline" than as another World.
Now what the hell exactly constitutes and creates a parallel worldline is another thing entirelly...

Day 65: Around the World in 13 Hours
As amazing as Disneyland was for nostalgia and fun, Disneysea was just as (if not even more) amazing. After waking up at 5:20am to get back, we took the resort train to Disneysea's entrance. However, instead of walking in to see Cinderella's castle, we were instead greeted with the sight of the Center of the Earth's "active" volcano with a medieval castle in front. Once again we made the mad dash around the park trying to get fast passes, and riding as many rides as possible. The park itself was really cool to just walk around in though. One moment we were walking the streets of Italy with gelato stands and Venetian gondolas, and then walking the streets of New York City. Then there was the rocky area of the active volcano, the medieval castle, the lighthouse in Cape Cod (home of the Disney Bear Duffy), Indiana Jones' Lost River Delta, Atlantica from the Little Mermaid, and the Arabian Coast.
My favorite ride of the day was definitely the Tower of Terror which was an inside drop tower where you felt like you were falling down a giant elevator shaft. It was terrifying but exhilarating. And it was so funny to hear the Japanese High school boys yelling "yabai yabai!" (basically a slang for "this is bad/dangerous") as we were hurled up and down. My favorite area of the park, however, was Mermaid Lagoon which had the Atlantica castle from The Little Mermaid. It was so cool. The castle itself was an indoor park home to a bunch of smaller rides like teacups and such. It was a really nice place to go when you wanted to warm up or get out of the sun. Plus while we were there we got to finally try seasalt ice cream! This was a big deal for us since seasalt ice cream was a major motif in a video game franchise we both play called Kingdom Hearts. And Disneysea is where the creator of the series, Tetsuya Nomura, first ate the treat (and decided to put it in his game). After trying it for myself, I understand why he loved it so much!
Some other things we rode were Aquatopia (a cool water ride where it looked like bumper cars but on water and you couldn't actually control where you were going), 20,000 leagues under the sea, Journey to the Center of the Earth, and Jumpin' Jellyfish. We were going to have dinner on the big ship in the park but ended up not being able to since we had to reserve seats beforehand. Instead we ended up eating at a restaurant in the Italian town and then headed home.
We ended up leaving early (at around 8pm) since we were absolutely exhausted. After Disneyland yesterday and everything we had tried to do today, we just could not go on. However, we had decided earlier to change our plans for the rest of the week. Instead of going to Akihabara tomorrow and then Shinjuku on Friday, we were going to do both tomorrow and go back to Disneysea on Friday! As soon as we got back to the hotel we collapsed.
