Ronnie Antonio Paris was born in Tampa, Florida, on the 9th of December, 2001, to Nysheera and Ronnie Paris Sr. Two months after his birth, somebody reported to the state’s abuse hotline that his mother was not seeking medical help for him despite the fact he had been vomiting for more than 24 hours. Ronnie was admitted to hospital, where staff said his vomiting was most likely caused by his mother overfeeding him.
In April 2002, Ronnie was vomiting again and was suffering from dehydration. Caseworkers removed Ronnie from his mother because of her “failure to follow medical advice” which included failing to seek medical help and not giving him a recommended drink called Pedialyte. Ronnie was placed into the care of his grandparents, where his father, Ronnie Sr., was also living.
Just the following month, Ronnie was back in the hospital because he had lost a substantial amount of weight. While in the hospital, doctors discovered that Ronnie had fractures in one arm and one leg that were around three weeks old. Ronnie was removed from his family but the Florida Department of Children and Family Services. As per the police report: “The injuries are clearly nonaccidental.”
Ronnie was sent to live with Faye Bing, his foster mother, and she welcomed him as part of the family. He was just like a brother to her two daughters, and she taught him to walk. She described Ronnie as a playful and happy child who always laughed. Nysheera and Ronnie Sr. were allowed to visit their son at his home; Nysheera reportedly followed him around the house while Ronnie Sr. sat on the couch paying him no attention.
For the next two years, Ronnie remained with Faye, and she had expressed her desire to adopt him. However, on 14 December, Ronnie was returned to his parents after they completed parenting courses. The family lived in an apartment on Humphrey Street, and according to neighbours, they often heard blazing rows. Teia Davenport, who lived in the apartment above them, recalled how she frequently heard shouting, fists banging on doors and objects being thrown against walls.
Faye continued to visit Ronnie, driving up from Bradenton. Each time, Ronnie cried in her arms but he refused to talk. Concerns started to surface for Faye, particularly when she noticed what looked like a burn mark on his forehead and a bruise on his cheek during a visit in early January...

1981: The Lesbian in Literature (3rd edition) by Barbara Grier
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Grier Ratings: During the 1960s, while Grier worked at The Ladder, she was involved in the creation of a bibliography of lesbian literature, The Lesbian in Literature. She used the name Gene Damon for that bibliography, but her rating system for lesbian literature would come to be known as Grier Ratings. Grier rated lesbian literature on a letter scale for how prominent the lesbian subject was to the story and a range of 1 to 3 asterisks for the quality of the representation:
🅰️⭐⭐⭐ A rating of 'A***' had lesbian characters with very sympathetic portrayals.
🅰️ A rating of 'A' without an asterisk meant there was a major lesbian component but not sympathetically portrayed.
🅱️ / ©️ The B and C ratings were for works with lesbian subplots or suppressed/coded lesbian themes.
🚮 Books that contained voyeuristic and demeaning representations of lesbians were rated as 'T (Trash)'.
Barbara Grier (1933--2011) is credited for having built the lesbian book industry. After editing The Ladder magazine, published by the lesbian civil rights group Daughters of Bilitis, she co-founded a lesbian book-publishing company Naiad Press, which achieved publicity and became the world's largest publisher of lesbian books. She built a major collection of lesbian literature, catalogued with detailed indexing of topics.
Grier realized she was a lesbian at age twelve after researching the topic at the library. She told her mother that she was homosexual, and her mother replied, "No, because you're a woman, you're a lesbian. And since 12 years old is too young to make such a decision, let's wait six months before we tell the newspapers." Yet, Grier's mother was supportive. When Grier was fifteen, her mother gifted her a copy of The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall and Of Lena Geyer (1936) by Marcia Davenport. This would be the start of Grier's collection of lesbian literature. She describes her collection of lesbian-themed books as Lesbiana, a collection that was fueled by a "love affair with lesbian publishing."
In 1957, Grier subscribed to The Ladder, a magazine edited by members of the Daughters of Bilitis. Grier began writing book reviews for The Ladder, using multiple pen names in her writings including Gene Damon, Marilyn Barrow, Gladys Casey, Terry Cook, Dorthy Lyle, Vern Niven, Lennox Strong, and Lee Stuart. The Ladder was the center of Grier's life in the 1950s and 60s. Some issues were completely written by her. Although it was primarily compiled by Grier, hundreds of women contributed information for this book.
In 1973, Grier co-founded Naiad Press along with Donna McBride, Anyda Marchant, and Muriel Crawford (Marchant's partner). They founded the venture with $2,000 pooled between them. Grier and McBride ran Naiad from Kansas City until 1980 when it relocated to Tallahassee, Florida. Both Grier and McBride continued to work other full-time jobs until 1982 when they dedicated all their time to the publishing company. Naiad Press went on to become the world's largest publisher of lesbian books.
Some complained that the books published by Naiad Press were always romances or mysteries with happy endings. But Grier said repeatedly that what she wanted was to reach the lesbians in Middle America who were in the closet and who deserved to have books about their lives, too.
Naiad's inventory included mysteries, romances, and science fiction novels. The press also reprinted classics of lesbian writing, including Ann Bannon's Beebo Brinker series. Naiad also produced non-fiction books. Rosemary Curb and Nancy Manahan's Lesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence (1985) was among the most successful. Naiad Press' most controversial publication was Lesbian Nuns: Breaking Silence, a work of non-fiction that was banned in Boston and criticized by the Catholic Church. Grier paid ex-nuns Rosemary Kurb and Nancy Manahan a half million dollars for the book which landed Grier on numerous talk shows.
By 1994, the company had a staff of 8 and projected sales of $1.8 million US. In 1992, Grier and McBride donated Naiad's entire collection to the San Francisco Public Library, which consisted of a tractor trailer full of 14,000 books estimated at $400,000 US.
Grier and McBride retired in 2005. They gradually let their books go out of print before closing Naiad Press' doors. The heir to Naiad Press became Bella Books of Ferndale, Michigan. Bella Books was founded in 2001 by Kelly Smith, who spent eighteen months working for Naiad in the late 1990s. Grier was very supportive of Bella Books, and noted that almost all of the Naiad writers have signed on with Smith.

“I’ve said it before, and I’ll say it again. Every child that you have — purchase a house for them,” Wayne Turner, a broker in New Orleans, says as a camera pans through a charmless, beige three-bedroom in Wasilla, Alaska. And again at a new construction in Davenport, Florida, staged in shades of cobalt. And inside a San Diego bungalow. Turner’s advice, which I like to call the baby-landlord thesis, is a popular remix on TikTok: Parents are told to purchase a property and install tenants until their child turns 18, at which point the kid could either sell the home to pay for school or use that equity to buy a new place nearthe university of their choice. After spending four years pursuing a degree and collecting rent from their roommates, the college house could be sold, a cycle through which, Turner says, a child’s real-estate holdings “pay for living expenses and just build wealth.”
There’s more than one way to make a child landlord: There are the Willlow Tufanos and Tyson Georges of the world — teenagers who throw money earned by reselling junk on eBay at other distressed assets, buying properties and taking advantage of bottomed-out markets to flip houses for cheap. (“I was inspired and driven by … how it was so easy to make money,” George said.) For oligarchs and war criminals, deeding a mansion to a young next of kin is a popular way to evade seizure — even if that relative is still in elementary school. But Turner’s brand of child wealth-generation feels more distinctly a product of the American middle and upper classes fueled by house flippers and investment blogs with names like Financial Samurai and Semi-Retired MD. It isn’t quite the old-money practice of a trust or buying adult children their first homes when they graduate college or get hitched. Instead, the one-house-per-kid theory, among the merely wealthy or strivers, is a path to a de facto college fund (or an insurance policy in case the child, in the words of one blogger, “can’t launch”) and a way to impart the wisdom of the self-made before a child can even walk. Like reading Rich Dad Poor Dad to the kids before bed.

I grew up in a small town in Iowa on the Mississippi River not far from the Quad Cities - which includes Davenport, Iowa. It may sound familiar if any of you have been watching the news in the past 24 hours, as a building built in 1907 had a partial collapse, and there are still people unaccounted for.
I need to ramble about this a little, because even my own sister was ranting about how the collapse is being dealt with... and it's been really affecting me, hearing so many people screaming about what is going on.
See, when you get a collapse like that, where part of the building is still standing, one of the things that emergency crews will do is bring in structural engineers to evaluate what is left. Not just *any* structural engineers, either, but folks who are specially trained to evaluate damaged structures like that and make some pretty scary calculations weighing the risk that they know that us crazy ass rescue crews will happily put ourselves into to save a life, and just exactly what the building is telling them. They did that at the Murrah Building in OK City. They did that at Surfside in Florida. They did that to the world trade center complex in NYC. Engineers examined the buildings in question and made their recommendations: The Murrah Building was *dangerous* and had already killed emergency workers, BUT the engineers thought that what was left could be shored up to make it safe to keep searching. Engineers looked at Surfside and left the undamaged parts up during the initial phases of search and recovery, until an incoming hurricane increased the risks to unacceptable levels, so they then brought the rest down rather than have it become potentially deadly during the storm. Different strategies were devised for each of the WTC buildings that had to be evaluated - Number 7 was searched until the fire became too much and eventually it was brought down, too. Other surrounding buildings were evaluated and shored, abandoned, or brought down safely.
That's what those folks do. They ultimately decide Is It Safe Enough To Risk Rescuers?
And in Davenport... the engineers have said, No. No, it is NOT safe enough, and even ATTEMPTING to search for the unaccounted for 2 people, or retrieve peoples' pets, will get someone killed.
Firefighters... we don't leave people behind. Not willingly. Not if there is even the *slimmest* chance to save them. It's not that firefighters aren't afraid to die, because that's literally crazy. It's just that firefighters are willing to take quite frankly *stupid* risks if it means someone else might live. And sometimes... sometimes someone needs to stand back and say, "No, that's TOO dangerous, for too little reward."
I watched the assistant fire chief of the DFD *crying* on national TV as he tried to explain. I watched him cut the press briefing short because he wasn't able to keep it together anymore as he stood up there and had to admit that, "yes, there are probably still people inside, and we can't do anything about it!"
"But the building doesn't look that baaaaad," everyone keeps saying. Neither did Surfside, until it was a pile of rubble in the darkness. And these structural engineers... they aren't cowards. Like I said, they're specially trained to make exactly these kinds of decisions: Is the result worth getting a guy or three killed or not?
I promise you that there is not a single person on the DFD that would NOT be willing to continue the search if they were allowed. I also know that my dog would happily eat a two pound bag of raisins if I let him. Both scenarios would be deadly. How do I know that?
Because that's what the experts said.
That's what the people whose whole job it is to make that decision, has decided. I HAVE to trust the experts. I canNOT base my decisions on what things look like on the news. I HAVE to believe that the people who train for exactly this type of thing know what they are talking about.
And the reason it's hitting me so hard is that I have BEEN that person. I have done exactly that kind of thing. I have had to stand in the middle of a destroyed scene in the darkness of the night and examine everything I had been trained in and everything I had seen and experienced, and MAKE that decision: It is not safe to continue this activity. I KNOW that there is no one here to save, so we have to move on.
And even KNOWING that I was right, I still second guessed myself. Triple guessed myself. SEXTUPLE guessed myself, despite it all... and *continued* re-examining my decision, right up until the proof that I had been right was found a day later. I knew I was right.... but I also knew that *IF* I was wrong... someone would die, and their SPECIFIC death would be on my soul for the rest of my life.
that isn't a fun place to be. it's the one thing about emergency services that I do NOT miss.
firefighters don't leave anyone behind. not if there is ANY chance. how do you choose who lives and who dies? especially when some of them are most likely already dead? how many lives do you throw away on a really small *chance* that is doomed to failure even if they aren't already gone? as trite as it is... Picard was right:
"It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life."

This was only the beginning of the end for Ronnie...
