Synopsis:

What happens when two rival directors who hate each other's guts are forced to share one roof? And what if one of them has a secret he's been harboring for years? Throw in a shared love of movies, BL manga, and an accidental kiss, and you've got the next heart-pumping love story in Midorigaoka High and the sequel to Twilight Out of Focus 1. Jin Kikuchihara, third-year director, main actor, and president of the film club, and second-year director Giichi Ichikawa see eye-to-eye on very little. Jin is flashy, flirty, and focused on keeping everyone happy, while Giichi expects the best from himself and others, and will compromise nothing to see his vision through. Constantly at each other's necks, the two can hardly stand to be in the same club. But what will happen when family trouble forces them to live in the same room? Review Proper

I love Tasogare Outfocus, but this is actually my favorite Janome.

The second installment curse strikes again!

UGHHHHHHH THIS WAS SO WHOLESOME. Don't get me wrong, Tasogare Outfocus is written pretty decently, but I really don't like how Janome just glossed over Hisashi's SA and grooming like that. It reminds me a lot of Etude vol. 1. I can still get over Etude vol. 1 'cause it's not that uncommon to see in sports and Ichi-san's deal with Futami was given some closure in 2, but given how short Tasogare Outfocus was, Hisashi felt like he just lmao byed his teacher. 😔Doesn't help that it kinda doesn't matter anymore in overlap even though it hasn't been long since it ended. Is my son Hisashi really okay now? 🥹

I'm old, so DK BL doesn't appeal to me that much anymore. It's also hard to find good DK rivalries nowadays that aren't just about fucking or delinquents. Zanzou Slow Motion, however, just checked all the right boxes for the category: simple, no drama, and no loose ends. That coupled with Janome's element of touch?

And can we talk about this monologue?

Ugh.

I will say Jin's suspenders, Ichikawa's snatched waist, and the ABO shout-out greatly influenced my decision too. Y'all should get suspended in high school, not wear suspenders!

Onto the technicalities...

I don't think I've heard these two co-star before (or I just don't remember), so I was a bit skeptical especially 'cause last I heard Makonyan in a DK was in, well... Given as BLCD!Ritsu. And where else did we hear Yuuma star in a DK too? Yuuma as Anime!Ritsu. We just had Given Anime!Ritsu in Tasogare Outfocus being somewhat friends with Ichikawa and now we have BLCD!Ritsu (thanks to ecargmura for catching this!) trying to romance him. They used very different tones for Ritsu, but the vibe was the same overall. THEY'RE THE SAME PERSON. Makonyan and Nakamo also played tops in the last works I heard of them (Makonyan as Takaba in Kurui Naku and Nakamo as Yakumo in Nu:carnival), so I was concerned about a lot of things. Thankfully, however, instead of Makonyan going for his Ritsu tone or his lighter Kimitte Yatsu for a more youthful vibe, he went all shounen in here lmaooo.

His bwakame was so funny it reminded me of this:

I love roasting Makonyan more than any other seiyuu out of fondness, but I'm really proud of how far he's gone. He's gotten so much better in his delivery, and it's obvious in his budding anime career, too.

But...

I didn't expect there would be improvements in his bedding techniques too...

What the fuck was that? HAHAHAHAHAHA. WAIT. No, y'all don't understand. I have most of this man's r-18 otome CDs and BLCDs, and I have never heard him this... this hot before???? Jin is such a smooth flirt, so I had some expectations on the delivery, but FURUKAWA MAKOTO HISSES. HE HISSES!!! SIR IS THIS APPROPRIATE BEHAVIOUR FOR A HIGH SCHOOL BOY??? THEY DON'T EVEN SHOW THEM DO THE DO FOR MORE THAN A MINUTE??? WHERE WAS THE NEED?!

PUTS THE GODDAMN FU IN FURUKAWA MAKOTO ALRIGHT!

First it was Ono Yuuki, now it's Makonyan. Is Nakamo's ass really that good that his tops go all in???

I admittedly don't have a lot to say about Nakamo because that man always slays. I was afraid that Makonyan would overpower him during their Netflix and chill, but as soon as I had that thought, Nakamo pushed back like??? THEM SHAKIRA HIPS DON'T LIE!

HOW DO I LEGALLY MARRY GINGER RECORDS???

I didn't read the scan or the official English release 'cause I actually had the raws, so I can't vouch for the translation. As for faithfulness to the manga, however, I need to stress that there were a lot of rearranged events and cut dialogue. One notable instance was Ichikawa's message for Jin. It was placed after their kiss in the last chapter, so I believe that these changes are quite significant. It is still possible to read the manga while listening to the BLCD, but I suggest reading the manga once first so you're aware of which pages you need to jump to.

Chil-chil Awards 2022 was a scam 'cause this wasn't nominated for ANYTHING! This might actually just be my favorite BLCD of 2021... and Makonyan was my favorite actor in this series so far. OKITSU AND MAKONYAN REALLY SWITCHED IN THIS LOG HAHAHAHA. Makonyan and Nakamo at least won in my heart. 😌 Definitely listen to this if you're a Makonyan fan or if you're a fan of the series in general. It's also perfect if you're looking for something light and sweet but immersive at the same time. Chesk gives this a 9/10! Only the third 9 after Sonna ni and KD!

Overall personality:

Really depends on who you ask. People upon meeting me for the first time tend to say I give off a serious, mature, and responsible vibe whereas those who have known me longer say that I am quirky, passionate, but assertive. I have multiple faces that I put on: one for work/professional settings, one around family, one for friends (and even so that can be split into multiple categories depending on how close I am with you). So multi-faceted is a good term to describe me, as I ‘m always adapting and changing to meet my surroundings. That also means not alot of people tend to know me, but I’m ok with that as I like distance and privacy in my personal life.

Hobbies:

Video games—otomes, gacha games, visual novels, JRPGS, and life simulators like Animal Crossing are my jam, tabletop games, musical theater, cosplay, ice skating, horseback riding, reading (historical fiction, fantasy, or gothic horror especially), listening to J-rock or alternative music.

Likes:

Spending money on gacha games, Italian food, traveling, ancient mythology and medieval history, horses, scrolling social media

Dislikes:

A lot of food as I’m a picky eater—in particular, mushrooms, bananas, seafood, and olives are big on my no list.

Cold or rainy weather. I have low cold tolerance.

***I’m also absolutely touch repulsed, so I’d like someone who isn’t too handsy or openly affectionate.

Preferences:

Someone introverted works best with me, although extroverts (to a degree) are ok too—what’s important is that they respect my need for personal space and alone time.

I don’t care about height too much.

Ideally, they can share some of my hobbies or are open to learning. They can’t be too pushy or demanding, as I tend to do things at my own pace. ahhh i have so many!!! i'll try my best to keep each category brief so i don't ramble on and on ehe

anime: i have too many to name... but i really enjoyed given!

manga: dengeki daisy!! i’ve read it on and off since i was about 16 (i’m 24 now) and it always makes me cry and scream...their romance is such a joy to see unfold! i highly recommend it!

movies: interstellar! the soundtrack and story gives me chills, and the first time i watched it with my partner i literally ugly bawled into his ear sdfjndskjfn. other favorites include promare, spirited away, howl’s moving castle, and ride your wave — most anime fans have probably seen the first three, so i’d like to encourage anyone interested in a (sad) well-buit romance to please check out ride your wave! yet another movie i ugly cried to...

series: gravity falls, steven universe, and arcane! as a league player, seeing the characters and lore of runeterra become a hit show made me very nostalgic and happy (also after only having fanart and some brief in-game interactions to tide us over beforehand, cait/vi is finally a thing <3), but i highly suggest it to anyone who doesn’t play league or is even hardly interested in it. the animation alone will blow you away!

books: tgcf by mxtx and erha by meatbun, though i really suggest anything at all written by these two goddesses. tgcf is a fave because of the wonderfully written pairings (hualian and beefleaf always fill me with absolute joy — hualian truly created love...) and amazing storytelling, and erha is just wonderfull all-around. it’s a mystery, tragedy, so many misunderstandings, and even has dubcon/noncon (which is always a fave for me ehe). i am currently collecting all the translated books and soon i will be unstoppable .

games (otome): i’ve played many, but olympia soiree is my all-time fave otome! i love how the story and romances unfold, and i found myself loving each character rather than having one or two i only cared for. yosuga and akaza are my favorites! if you play, please feel free to gush about it with me!!

Ensemble Stars! Episode 1 Reaction

So with the recent Enstars!! english release a couple weeks ago, there are a lot of us new enstarries entering the fandom. Most of which have either a)never watched the anime/have very little background knowledge of the lore from the first game (!) or b)didn’t even know that the game (!!) is basically the sequel of the anime and first wave of the game(!) in terms of timeline and main characters and all that. From what I understand, the original Enstars! was a gacha card and otome (not really a dating sim though) game only and then it was relaunched as Enstars!! and added a rhythm portion to the game. The gacha/otome portion of the game is known as Enstars!!Basic while the rhythm game portion is known as Enstars!!Music. Also, the first wave of the franchise has a spinoff called Ensemble Girls (which also underwent a ! termination and rerelease/brand to !!) At least this is from what I know so far, correct me if I’m wrong or missing anything.

(P.S. It also has several musical theater stage plays that focus on the different groups. The only reason I know this is because Yoshihiko Aramaki (actor) plays Ritsu. Also, I’m pretty sure Kitamura Ryou (Arashi’s VA) also plays the onstage version of Arashi as well, but I haven’t watched any clips yet so not 100% sure of this fact. There are also mangas and novels but this is all wayy too much for a new fan, complete overload. So we’re focusing on the anime and other connected lore.)

I’m including myself in the new category since I barely know any lore besides what’s been covered in the main story in the game and anything I do know is what I absorbed via osmosis posts made by mutuals or vids that I happened to come across over the past couple years. Surprisingly I never watched the anime (even though I tend to watch a lot of music/idol or sports genre titles) and well, since I’m playing the game, I decided to brush up on some of that missing lore knowledge by sitting down and watching. And I figured it would be fun to make a made - in - real - time reaction post, especially for other people that don’t have time (or accounts, vpns, virus protection, etc.) to watch the anime.

Note: I can’t guarantee I’ll include all the details since this is literally just me reacting and some things other people find important, I won’t. Also, take some of my comments with a grain of salt since it’s personal opinion and not everyone would share it. This also isn’t like a serious analysis or anything, probably more on the memey side since I’m making this for fun.

With that said, let’s start:

Anzu is basically the heroine of the anime/the otome game default protagonist/produce/player stand-in (like Yuu in Twst, Komori Yui in Dialovers, Haruka Nanami in Utapri). She��s not faceless though and I think she had some lore to her. Her younger stepbrother is the protagonist of Ensemble Girls (aka player stand-in)

She used to be part of Kimisaki academy (setting for Ensemble Girls) before transferring to Yumenosaki academy (setting for Ensemble stars). Her brother did the opposite (Y -> K) so they did like a switcheroo.

Damn Anzu is literally so pretty

Cue cliche idol character introduction where protag runs into them practicing/performing/sing and you get that 🌟💥💫🪄💖✨

so i guess that Trickstar is gonna be the main protagonist group since the general rule of thumb is whoever the otome protag runs into either first or last will be the main character/true end route (Anzu is a TrickstarP confirmed?)

Subaru falling on top of Hokuto and basically pinning him to the floor while he argues and sits up just a bit so they’re basically nose to nose. This is why people ship you too. There is no heterosexual explanation for how casual this interaction was

Also, sorry but any time I hear Kakihara Tetsuya’s voice (Subaru’s VA) in any anime, all I can picture is Natsu from Fairy Tail since that was one of the anime I watched religiously as a kid

Stars Ensemble is the opening is such a banger. I love that song. Literally kept redoing it in game until i got S+ on easy and normal

i’m sorry but who invented the names of the ranks? its kinda dumb. and like why are there literally three tiers with S in them????

Plot time: B1 shows are more true to the ideal of DreFes where people are free and doing what they like and just giving a good show/entertainment like entertainers should. Something happened (blatant foreshadowing lol) and any battles happening rank A1 and above are apparently more controlled/strict? To be disclosed.

I thought these battles were music related but I guess not. Oogami (the man, the myth, the furry who i think is being voiced by Ono Yuuki. at least it sounds like his voice) was introduced and started singing. so not that strange. but then Kiryu showed up and it turns out to be a physical fight to determine who is the strongest in the school. Kiryu is the reigning champion in Ryuu-Ou-Sen, aka is the strongest in the school.

Tetora is in the Karate Club who’s captain is Kiryu

i thought they meant the competition for “strongest” was metaphorical??? or powerful voices/songs??? isn’t this taking the free part a little bit too far???? i didn’t think they meant the literal physical strength. wow. caught me off guard.

also, what is this FLCL? Oogami is blocking Kiryu’s kicks with his guitar (why is Kiryu not throwing any punches? not switching up your moves is literally beginner’s mistake of martial arts). that poor electric guitar. it looked expensive. this is making me cringe as much as seeing rock bands/singers smash guitars on stage. please. what did the instruments do to deserve this #stopinstrumentabuse

Kiryu just straight up launched Oogami off the stage with a single kick. He recovered with a 10/10 back flip and stuck the landing! (Bakuten is calling fo recruits) however, his landing pad was the unfortunate bystander, Anzu. and that’s a KO. down for the count on her part. my man Oogami is not the least bit sorry for knocking the poor girl out.

i bet anzu’s first day review is now a 0/10 would not do again

also Oogami is a cheater. he already got knocked off the stage but because he landed on his convenient cushion aka Anzu “it’s not the ground i touched so i’m not out” bitch, this ain’t the floor is lava. this is basically a martials arts match. if you’re out of the ring, you lose. stop cheating you cheater.

Subaru may be an idiot, but he’s my idiot. Literally why is he so cute. would not be able to handle him in real life tho. too extroverted and too much energy. but as a character? i would wholeheartedly adopt him too. he is now also my son.

is Sagami-sensei a nurse? a teacher? both? is the only adult in this school or something? because one adult responsible for like what? 36+ kids does not sound very responsible

so if i didn’t already make a note. Anzu transferred into the Production department course but is the only student because it’s on a trial run right now

nvm about an earlier point. Sagami-sensei just said she’ll be the only girl academy student right now. so i guess even the normal course doesn’t have any girls.

this anime would not pass the bechdel test (get on Utapri’s level enstar. where’s my supportive girl best friend character. or maybe even a rival producer character. wait no. that would actually be kinda interesting. plus the first episode of enstars is trying to speedrun through a bunch of different tropes and genres anyway. give me a female rival producer that produces exclusively for Fine or something. but like maybe she can be deuteragonist. wants to see change viva la revolution. and is willing to also support anzu and work together with her. give me supportive femal rivals friendship)

Sagami-sensei basically said the academy has become stale because they focus too much on upholding traditions/rules. cliche line of “the MC of the reverse harem may (actually will be but gotta stay non-meta) be just what we need to break out of this funk/darkness/etc.” the chosen one, the destined one, jkjk

possible throw away character analysis/foreshadow line where Hokuto tends to take a lot of the group’s responsibility/won’t ask for help

and here’s another trope: character saying actual important stuff/revealing something to another character except that character is unconscious. hokuto is telling anzu he lied about how the academy is the great school that is to train boys into idols and support idols. it’s basically those that that stay at the top, remain at the top, and those at the bottom are outcasted.

wow a school with a ranking system where those at the bottom have a very difficult time moving up the ranks and those at the top basically run the school/oppress everyone below them. where have I heard this before? (Baka to test, Classroom of the elite, Assassination Classroom, Gakuen Alice, Kakegurui, etc.)

also the ending scene of the rest of Trickstar coming in and and just staring at Anzu while she’s still not awake while Hokuto is talking. boys, that’s kinda really creepy. please cease and desist immediately.

like imagine being anzu and just waking up and hearing someone talking to you in exposition paragraph font. you roll over in your bed and the first thing you see are four high school pretty boys just staring down on you with serious looks on their faces. i would cry in both introvert and social anxiety. also would be very weirded out.

but anyways. hokuto also does the stereotypical “reverse harem MC you are what we need to start off this revolution. the first fired shot of this war.”

Final Thoughts

You know when something is so bad, it’s good? Yeah, that’s Enstars in a nutshell. Some things are just batshit insane. Especially with what I heard happens later on. But also, it’s a fun time as long as you don’t take anything seriously. At the very least, it’s entertaining. This episode hit the school life, music, idol, fighting, drama, reverse harem genres and a whole bunch of tropes that I am way too lazy to name. Also as much as I would like to say the oppression by the student council and giving out punishments for the drefes in the episode is a crime, if it was technically against school rules then I don’t think I can put it there. Rules are rules babe, sorry. (Definetely a crime in my heart though. I would like to see a good fighting sequence thanks. Also you made my son, Tetora upset. Not cool man, not cool.) I’m still not over how pretty Anzu is by the way.

Also for clarification, Enstars! follows the journey of Trickstar as the main protagonists with an emphasis on the school idol training plot while Enstars!! (Aka the game we’re all playing now) follows the journey of Alkaloid with the idol revamp and actually working in entertainment in ES square plot. Hence, !! Is the sequel of !

'I'm in Love with the Villainess' Spin-off Releases First Volume in Japanese

On Monday, February 28, GL Bunko released the first volume of Inori's Yuri light novel Heimin no Kuse ni Namaikina (She's So Cheeky for a Commoner) digitally in Japanese. The light novel features illustrations by Hanagata.

The light novel is a spin-off of Inori's hit Yuri isekai series I'm in Love with the Villainess (Watashi no Oshi wa Akuyaku Reijou). It retells the events of the main series from love interest Claire's point of view, including new content.

I'm in Love with the Villainess follows Oohashi Rei, who awakens as Rae, the protagonist of her favorite otome game. However, Rae is not interested in pursuing any of this new world's eligible bachelors but instead sets her sights on Claire, the main antagonist. The series follows Rae and Claire's relationship and the threats they face in this world and beyond.

The series has received praise for its characters, world-building, and LGBTQ+ themes. I awarded the series a 10/10 score for its second volume. The series also placed fifth in AnimeJapan's Manga We Want to See Animated category and 17th in the Next Manga Awards Best Printed Manga category last year.

The series began as a web novel series on Shousetsuka ni Narou before being picked up as a light novel by GL Bunko. The series ran for five volumes, the last of which was published in Japanese last August. A manga adaptation of the series illustrated by Anoshimo began in June of 2020 and is currently serialized in Comic Yuri Hime. Both the light novels and the manga are licensed in English by Seven Seas Entertainment.

Given the popularity of I'm in Love with the Villainess domestically and abroad, an English license and adaptation may be forthcoming, but no official news or rumors has been released as of yet.

Phee Headcanons

Okay, so I know exactly nobody asked for headcanons about Lynt’s familiar, but these ideas wouldn’t leave me alone... >_> It’s under the cut because I’ve had an unhealthy amount of thoughts about this squirrel. Send help.

MC says Phee is really cute. That makes me think she’s got to be a Japanese dwarf flying squirrel. Look at how cute they are!

Phee became Lynt's familiar a few days after his grandfather died. Lynt was in the garden crying and Phee heard him from the tree she was in. She played/snuggled with Lynt all afternoon to make him feel better. Lynt didn't want to say goodbye at the end of the day, so he made her his familiar. Lynt lowkey thinks Phee was either sent by his grandfather to keep him company or is his grandfather possessing a squirrel. Because if there was ever a person to give the Akedian equivalent of a stiff middle finger to death and find a way to keep watch over his family, it was Van Akedia.

She loves mostly everybody (more on that later), human or otherwise, but can't be left alone. Squirrels are social animals. When she's alone, she gets anxious. Phee will scratch the furniture/walls gliding around the room looking for someone to keep her company. There's also the anxiety poops... How does Lynt know this? Because when he first took Phee in as his familiar, he read every book about flying squirrels he could find. He's always loved animals and wanted to be the best squirrel dad he could be.

Phee's nocturnal, so Lynt stays awake at night to play with her. That's why he's so tired during the day.

Lynt also doesn't like going to class because most of his professors won't let him bring Phee with him; they say she'd be a distraction. (Not Hawke; he has no fucks to give) He can leave her with Tino, but Lynt would miss her and end up not being able to pay attention anyway.

When Lynt leaves Phee with Tino, she always wants to help with whatever he’s doing. Most of the time he convinces her to supervise him, but he involves her when he can. He’s folding laundry? She can fold the handkerchiefs! He’s making bread? She can turn on the oven and hand him small things like measuring cups!

She is the official mascot of the Nap Guard (Lynt's fan club).

Liam was so happy Lynt found a friend in Phee, he made flying squirrels Akedia's national animal. He also made it illegal to kill/hunt flying squirrels. It was a bit of a weird law since nobody was doing that anyway. Nobody minded. The people were more than happy to protect the animal that their prince loved.

Lynt taught Phee how to write. She helps him grade papers and tests.

Phee likes to hide nuts on people she trusts. Often when Lynt stands up, empty nut shells fall out of his cloak. She also has the habit of putting nuts in people's back pants pockets in the hopes them sitting will break the shell open for her. She scared Knight pretty badly when she tried to hide some nuts in his back pocket once.

Phee has a green cloak that looks just like Lynt's so if she's with someone other than Lynt or Tino she's easily recognizable as Lynt's familiar. The cloaks has cuffs her wrists and ankles can slip in and out of. Lynt wanted her to have something so they'd match, but he didn't want it to clip around her neck the way his cloak did; he worried if it got caught on something it would choke her. The last thing he wanted was for her to be strangled by a gift he gave her.

She has no idea how small she really is. She wants Lynt to enter her in all of the contests for the familiar royal, fortitude included. Lynt refuses every year and she thinks he keeps her out of so many categories (1) so other familiars have a chance to win something and (2) to protect the other familiars from her because she 100% believes she could wreck a dragon. (She's also 100% wrong.)

Phee's Favorite People (in this order):

Lynt - For obvious reasons

MC - Because you can't have an otome game where the love interest's pet hates you.

Tino, Liam, Norah, and Styn - These are people Lynt had regular contact with before leaving for Colde. Lynt cares about them, so she does too. (She was never close to Hanneh as Lynt seemed indifferent towards her.)

People/animals (normally at the academy) that Phee doesn't like (in no particular order):

Roy - Most of time when someone drags Lynt off to class (and away from her), it's Roy.

Linos - A snake ate a litter of her kits. (She was devastated when it happened, and that was the reason Lynt's sadness resonated with her when they met.) It wasn't Linos, but she hasn't trusted a snake since.

Dia/Jay - She also doesn't trust humans that trust snakes.

I was thinking about this for a while and understood that I wouldn't date a big part of my favorite otome games characters, though, I would happily date 3 out of 4 my favorite literature favorites. Information as to Why Twisted Wonderland is NOT an Otome or Dating Sims Game

Hello Everyone! It’s been a while~ ヾ(•ω•`)o I finally found the courage to write Twisted Wonderland content after what happened a couple months ago, when I literally just came back, and while writing a couple of analysis I thought I would write this as an informative rather than an actual analysis of the game.

DISCLAIMER: This post is NOT by any means demeaning otome games or dating sims whatsoever. This was written to clear the misunderstanding people had on the genre of Twisted Wonderland and that anyone should be allowed to be play without feeling restricted or thinking it’s not something they want to try because of misunderstandings. Do NOT use this post as a source to offend people but please use it to inform others.

It’s no longer old news that Twisted Wonderland frequently gets called an “otome game” or dating sims by people who never played the game before. People on twitter, youtube, and even those that were trying to or supposed to advertise the game have often categorized it as such. This wouldn’t have been such a big deal had people recognize and acknowledge that the game isn’t after being explained to about it, but after hearing their arguments as to why they refuse to change how they think about it, the frustration pent up for nearly a year has finally bubbled over. Buckle your seats everyone cause today is the day this argument ends once and for all!

First off, let’s start off with what makes an otome/dating-sims an otome/dating sim. Both are very similar, where, according to Japan’s Wikipedia, Nico dictionary, Kotobanks, and many more Japanese dictionary sites, otome games (i.e. 乙女ゲーム) are games which includes a female MC who has the opportunity to attract the very attractive male characters in the game and enter a love route with each of them separately or harem-like. Dating sims are a bit different. Dating sims (i.e. 恋愛シミュレーションゲーム) falls into to two definitions with the first one being the exact reversal of otome: MC being male, the love interest characters being very attractive females. The second definition is the one many are familiar with – a romantic visual novel. Believe it or not the first definition is the original definition of what dating-sim games are, the second meaning derived from many attempts of using the term “dating-sim” incorrectly by the English speaking gamers to the point society now believes it’s the actual meaning.

However, this difference doesn’t change that both otome and dating sims are very close. Both genres include gender-specific MC(s) (there’s been games where a player can play either male or female), handsome/beautiful characters with their respective love routes, and a main plot to follow. In addition to this, when the game is in mobage format, there’s going to be showers of fan service in the form of events and gacha-cards, though, arguably, it doesn’t change the fact that the MCs would still be interacting with the characters romantically.

So, from the explanation written above, Twisted Wonderland falls into that category, right? Sorry not sorry, that’s wrong. Sure, Twisted Wonderland has many characters to swoon over since…I mean…they’re drawn and written by Yana Toboso and her staff and…there hasn’t been anyone so far who had the capability of saying no to characters she personally had drawn or created. But! It doesn’t mean that the game is a dating sim or otome.

One of the reasons Twisted Wonderland isn’t one of them is how the game is set up. There are no routes the MC can enter nor can the MC pick and choose which characters to focus on in general. Like FGO and Granblue Fantasy, the MC solely follows the main plot and has to interact with all the characters they’re introduced to whether they like it or not. The same logic is applied when playing events – the MC will be participating and talking to all the characters involved in the event. Not once does the game give the opportunity for the MC to choose who they can talk to and participate in the event with the person they chose. The only time it’ll be one-on-one is, most of the time, getting the desired character’s card through gacha or when the event sets the story where the MC has no choice but to talk to a character one-to-one. For the latter though, the MC isn’t going to be able to wish for the character they want to talk to – it’s completely random and up to the writers who they want the MC to interact with.

For otome and dating-sims alike, especially in mobage format, the MC has the opportunity to choose who they wish to focus on and interact solely with the characters they chose whether it’s the main story, event, and card story. It can even be arguably said that otome and dating sims focus solely on the MC and their love interest interaction more than anything else. As for Twisted Wonderland, again, that does not happen. Twisted Wonderland, in addition to progressing the main story and revealing more about the characters involved, focuses on everyone’s interaction with each other including the NPCs. The game shows the other characters that aren’t interacting with the MC talking to other characters and what role they were playing while the MC was busy with the group the writer had them interact with during that time. Even in the card stories, most of the card stories involve more character-to-character interaction rather than MC-to-character interaction.

Speaking of which, the MC in Twisted Wonderland, the game, is gender ambiguous. Not once did the game developers and story writers mentions the MC as a specific gender like the other romance games. Heck, most of the characters don’t even use a gender-specific pronoun such as 彼女 (“kanojo” = she) or 彼 (“kare” = he) when referring to the MC. They usually refer to the MC by their given position, 監督生 ( “kantokusei” = prefect). The only exception is when the game’s mascot and MC’s buddy, Grim (the blue-fire monster), who uses あいつ ( “aitsu”) which is a gender neutral pronoun that holds the vague meaning of “that one” or “that person”. There’s also the fact that the MC’s default name is ユウ (“Yuu”), which is name used by either genders in Japan and how the MC uses gender neutral pronouns when regarding themselves as 自分 (“jibun”) and others as 貴方/あなた (“anata”).

Even during the official advertisement, official summary, official game archive book ( i.e., Twisted Wonderland Magical Archives), and posts made by the staff on twitter, not once did they specify the gender of the MC. In fact, they never once even specified the gender of the audience they’re targeting the game towards nor say anything about there being romance or any hints of harem-esque situations that involves the MC in any shape or form. The most “direct” statement made by Twisted Wonderland’s staff was from an email a fellow Twisted Wonderland fan had sent to the staff after a magazine had advertised the game as “Disney’s first game for women”. The email from the staff mentions that they wanted the game to be enjoyed by everyone, REGARDLESS OF GENDER. (link to said post here)

If they had any intentions of making the game otome-like or dating sim-like, Aniplex, Disney, and Twisted Wonderland staff would’ve mentioned that the game has romance or the possibility for there being romance when releasing the story summary, game system set up, and their ads. Not only would they have done that to get the audience they wish to target but speaking of it legally, they are required to mention it since there’s liability on their part on informing their customers on anything they need to know in regard to the game they’re playing. Age restrictions, fees, game play, and the like – Twisted Wonderland also had to go through the same process like any other visual novel games to be developed and released.

In a way, Twisted Wonderland can be seen as another Touken Ranbu or KanColle, but with an actual main story plot to progress through. All three games’ MCs are gender ambiguous, great characters to throw-er-spend money on, and have fun game plays. Sure, unlike Touken Ranbu and KanColle, where their MCs continues to be gender ambiguous in their anime and manga adaptation, Twisted Wonderland’s MC in the manga adaptation ended up being male – however, a statement was released by Yana revealed that the MC in the game and the MC for the manga are not the same people. (Link here) Meaning, the “real” or “official” MC’s gender continues to be gender ambiguous for the sake of continuing to attract all genders to play the game.

All of this being said, Twisted Wonderland is a fun, visual novel game and supposed to be enjoyed by everyone – each to their own way and passion. No one shouldn’t be discouraged from playing it solely because of false advertisements or misconceptions made by others who haven't played the game yet.

Fictional Characters vs Real Life Favourites

I got tagged by @kamyru to do “Fictional Characters vs Real Life Favorites” challenge, so I’m going to try it. I’m sorry it took me so long, my classes really takes most of my time. Again, thank you for tagging me! ♥

1. Who are your favorite characters from otome games? Well, I love a lot of characters, but naming all of them would be a bit too much, so I will try to pick a few: Toma Kiriya (Irresitible Mistakes), Tadashi Nakano (Sweet Elite), Lysander (My Candy Love), Shin (Amnesia), Artem (Tears Of Themis), Fritz and Ron (Cinderella Phenomenon), John (Backstage Pass) and Tomoya (Clannad, I know he’s not a love interest in the game, but he’s a character so it counts?) and many more.

2. Who would you date in real life out of them? Probably Toma, Fritz and Tomoya. I really like the rest of them and I think we could’ve been friends, but I don’t really see us as a couple.

3. Who are your favorite characters from books? Sirius Black. Definitely.

4. Which of them would you date? Haha, none. I read Harry Potter as a little kid and I’ve loved Sirius since then, but I for sure wouldn’t date him.

5. Do you have any manga/anime characters that you love? Which of them? I don’t watch too many animes (or read mangas), so it’s a bit hard. But, I would say Satoru and Kenya from Erased (it’s my favourite anime), Haru Yoshida from My Little Monster, Ame from Wolf Children, Yuzuru from Angel Beats, Kaito from Japan Sinks, Gilbert from Violet Evergarden, Haku from Sprited Away, Marnie from When Marnie Was There and Takumi from Anthem Of The Heart - Yeah, I have a lot ot them, haha.

6. Would you date any of them? Hm, I’d date Kenya, Yuzuru and Kato - as for the rest of them, I think we wouldn’t be a great fit.

7. What fictional characters do you find the most attractive? Loki. Loki. Loki. Also, John Gray from Outlander and Kieran from Finding Camellia (manhwa). When it comes to otome games, I adore how Lysander looks, Toma Kiriya, Riku Morimachi and Artem Wing. But it’s hard to say. I just really like how they were drawn.

8. What real life people do you find the most attractive? Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, Leonardo DiCaprio, Chris Hemsworth, Johnny Depp, Henry Cavill and Merlin Monroe.

9. What are three things you find the most appealing in a fictional character? I like intelligence, somewhat seriousness and devotion.

10. What three things are you looking for in real life people? Devotion, understanding and honesty.

11. Name other fictional favorites that don't fall in any categories I mentioned. Lecter? I mean, he’s not a good person, but I found his character amusing.

12. Name some real life people that you admire. A definitly admire people who can debate and have a abiliy to think quickly. And not being afraid to say what you think, open-mindness.

if you could date only one character from all the anime shows you have watched (or otome games you have played), who would it be?

in case it's hard to chose only one character, i have a probably easier question: which world would you go to? it could be naruto, mha, death note or another one:)

Ohhhh, this is so hard!!! Okay, I'm going to break it into categories.

1. Date only one character from any anime I've watched

So, I'm going to go for realism. Who would realistically be paired well with me. I don't want children which pushes out a lot of characters.

By fandom, here are my first thoughts:

Naruto: Iruka, Kakashi, Kankuro

Saiki: none

Black butler: none

Yuri on ice: none

BNHA: Maybe Aizawa?

Death note: I love L actually, I'm going to put him here lol

OHSHC: hmm, none

Fullmetal alchemist: errrr, I always thought Kain Fuery was adorable, but I don't know if I know enough about him to count him on this list or not.

I don't know if I've seen any others...? I'm probably forgetting one though haha. I'd say from the list above, I couldn't handle the realities of dating L or Aizawa, I'll discount Kain for lack of info, I refuse to live in the dessert, so that's a no for Kankuro, and I don't know if I could support Kakashi properly.

It's going to have to be my boy, Iruka!

2. Who would I date from the otome/dating games I've played?

By game, first thoughts:

Obey me: none, actually dating millennia old beings would probably suck ngl.

WTNC: Ezra, I love him, he's so cute.

The arcana: Hmmm, none. I love Asra, but there's too much going on there, wayyy too stressful.

7kpp: Duke Lyon is by far my favourite... Would he want children though??? I feel like he wouldn't, but there is a whole sucession thing... I choose to believe he'd stand up to pressure and go for what he wanted!

TWC: None, I love Nate, but he's too tall for me and dating a vampire seems messy.

Ebon Light: None, I love Vadeyn, but I don't want to live in the country with military elves, not for me lol.

Err, I've definitely played so many more of these, but I have to pick Duke Lyon from Seven Kingdoms: The Princess Problem because I love him so much. All I hope for is that the full game gets released before I finish my master's degree in about 4 and a half years. Somehow I still feel like it's a long shot :(((((

But I seriously recommend 7kpp if anyone is interested (and the other games on the list!). I think the forum with the extended demo was down for a while, I don't know if it still is, but I have the files if anyone wants them.

And finally:

3. Which world would I go to?

This is tricky. Going by the anime worlds on my list for question one...

Naruto is out of the question.

Saiki would kinda be awesome. It'd just be the normal world but people heal fast, have cooler hair colours etc. Sounds good to me!

Black butler: Ehh, it would only be good if I were rich. From what I know, my family were rich during this time period, but they also all only spoke German, so I'd be a bit stuck :(

Yuri on ice: This is just modern day without homophobia I guess? I can't ice skate, but the world seems nice!

BNHA: Modern world but with quirks... hmmm. I don't think the chance of having a cool superpower overrides the chance of being murdered by someone else with a cooler superpower. I'll say no.

Death note: This is just the early- mid 2000s but with a deadly world serial killer. I already lived through the early-mid 2000s and I don't think adding a serial killer would make it better. Pass.

OHSHC: Well, I did go to a fairly fancy private school, and a lot of the richest people there were truly insufferable, and I don't want to repeat that. But then again, I guess the world in general is just also a 2000s world, but where there are somehow seven summers in two years.

And finally FMA: Listen, I would love to learn alchemy. But I also don't want to live in a military dictatorship :( Going to have to be no.

So, I guess I pick either Saiki K world or Yuri on Ice world which are both slightly better versions of reality haha. I think my final decision would depend on what other changes Saiki had made. He may have also stopped homophobia or something, so my final choice would depend on that info.

‘My Next Life as A Villainess’ Anime is over...

SO WHAT NOW???

A lot of us are disappointed that Katarina’s adventures are finally over, and a lot of us are gonna miss watching the wacky hi-jinks of our dense villainess. I’ve seen a lot of people say that they will stop posting or paying attention to hamefura after the anime ends, and while I might be the same to some extent, I just want to say that there are still a lot of hamefura things to look forward to after the anime ends!

These are actually some very obvious things to look forward to, but you know I’d still like to share them so you can use them to fill the hole in your heart that the anime left behind.

The Manga

Hamefura still has an on-going manga that is currently in Chapter 3 of the Light Novels! A lot of you already read it, and understand that it can get frustrating when there’s a lack of updates on the english side of things, but if you’re really curious, you can go over and check out the JP releases every month so you can have an idea of whats to come for the manga :DD (The fan translation of ENG Chapter 26 came out a few days ago so you know it’s not dead!!)

I’d recommend reading the english translation on Mangadex, since most translation groups officially upload their translation on there.

The Spin-off (Hametsuo/Bakarina Alter)

It deserves it’s own category for just how unique it is in terms of its reception in the western crowd. I know a lot of people probably read it, but I guess people barely talk about because it’s not really that far into it’s premise yet.

I just can’t stop recommending this manga to people (despite not going where I thought it’d be) because of how good the art-style is and how much promise it has. It updates monthly, which I know is a long wait, but it does pay off when you see the quality of everything. Plus it’s just fun to imagine how hamefura would go if it followed the typical “villainess otome isekai” format.

I actually love talking about hametsuo, so maybe my posts are woth the look ;; w ;;

The Light Novels

I’m happy to read that a lot of people are gonna go switch and buy the light novels after the anime ends! By the time the anime ends, the Vol. 6 of the LN would release a week later, acting kind of like a replacement of what is supposed to be a new episode for that week.

The fan-translated version of the web novel is available online, up until half of Vol. 4, but I still recommend buying the books on bookwalker (i don’t know if the sale is still there, but I’d recommend picking up the book regardless!). If reading the fan translation piqued your interest, then playing for the books would definitely worth your money if you ask me!

An increase of sales might show them that there’s interest for this light novel, and might make them translate the JP novels even faster! (or maybe i’m just too impatient to wait 2-3 months for Volume 7 dshfjsfgs who knows?)

My only warning is that the tone really does shift post-arc 1 (Fortune Lover I) so if you’re looking for harem hijinks, from spoilers I’ve seen I think there would less of that and more of world building. (ps. please stop asking me where to read it ;;-;;)

Edit: Volume 8 is coming out in a few months, with Volume 9 probably being released at either Jan or Feb next year, then after that it’ll be a yearly update

StoryMe Otome Game

I’m surprised a lot of people doesn’t know about the StoryMe game, despite it updating every week alongside the anime. Just kidding I didn’t either lol, I actually found about this thanks to the hamefura reddit discord server! StoryMe is a choose-your-own-adventure otome game, kind of like those “Episodes” or “Chapters” game that gets recommended on Youtube a lot.

It’s still in japanese, which is probably why not a lot of people knows of it yet, but it seems like you can play as Katarina and romance anyone from the entire harem (yes, the girls too), so keep you eyes peeled for if ever it gets an english translation!

It’s basically the bluray Fortune Lover game with the DVDs, but instead of Maria, you actually get to play as Katarina!

(I’ll make a separate post for this later, maybe)

Edit: The game just came out in English in September 16, and just spat out a 11-episode update at September 30

tldr: go play it, it has 19 episodes out right now

Katarina’s Farm

It’s a newly announced mobile game with a web trial version that centers around playing as Katarina, trying to earn money and points for expanding your farm land, planting more expensive plants and getting the other members of the harem to join you! It’s a 2D pixel game that seems like it wouldnt take too much time to play (you can get the first 4 characters within 30 minutes of gameplay, but that might be adjusted in the mobile version) so I understand if it might not interest some people, but that’s still something to look forward to!

The Bluray Otome Game

While I can’t say this for certain, but maybe if there was ever an official english bluray release, it might include the Fortune Lover Male Capture Target Routes that are included in the game. Maybe someone will play it and translate it even! It would interesting to see how different the boys are, and give us further appreciation for Katarina’s influence and changes!

There’s a preview for a CG in Keith’s Route, which comes with the second bluray (no pv for Geordo ;; w ;;)

We don’t know if they’ll ever be released in English though, so hopefully someone translates them at least ;;w;;

The Manga and Yuri Anthology

Missing the hilarious and heartwarming antics of Katarina and her harem? Then you should check out the Manga Anthology (that has just been been translated in its entirety). It’s 14 chapters of absolute hilarity!

There’s also a Yuri Anthology, featuring the 4 girls of the harem! If you’re looking for more of that then, it’s an absolute recommendation!

Spin-off Visual Novel

Edit: They recently just announced a spinoff visual novel! It takes place after the Fortune Lover 1 Arc and features sexy pirates hgsjhgsdf

It’s just recently announced so there’s not a lot of info besides the company making it (it’s Otomate) and the fact that it’s gonna be an all new Bakarina adventure uwu

I heard there’s a Bakarina Radio too, featurning the VAs of the anime cast.

I don’t know if its a regular thing or a one time thing, but its still worth checkin out!

The Second Season of the Anime

I seriously wasn’t expecting another season, considering how different the next arc is, but I’m happy nonetheless for more Bakarina! I hope this motivates the fans to continue supporting the series, as a bigger reaction will definitely lead to more content for us to enjoy! I have a theory about S2, which I think is worth the read :3c

Other Otome Isekais

There’s a lot of other Villainess Otome Isekai’s that are worth the read, and a lot of them as just as interesting as hamefura, despite the lack of a harem (from deep rooted revenge to hilarious and crazy villainess, there’s a lot!) The quickest recommendation I can give is just looking up “Akuyaku” and “Villainess” on Mangadex (do both btw they dont have the same results), but theres a lot that doesn’t get recommended so do your research! I swear it’s worth your time!

Anyways, I hope any of these fill the hole that the hamefura anime will leave in our hearts as we wait for season 2! (sorry for repeating the same line again hdsfgdjhsfg) Feel free to add anything like fanfic recommendations and artists, as I can’t cover everything on my own, as those really help provide hamefura fans with content :DD
