It’s been a year since Lisa’s death, and Castiel is struggling to help his grieving children. Claire has taken moody teenager to a whole new level, while Ben has retreated into silence.
Claire might not share his DNA, but he raised her from birth, meeting Lisa when she was already pregnant. He doesn���t know anything about Claire’s birth father, apart from his name, and that he was in prison when Claire was born. He doesn’t want to know anything else about the man.
Until Claire disappears in search of Dean Winchester.
Dean faintly hears the doorbell chime of someone entering the front office, but since he’s buried elbow-deep in the engine bay of a 1970 El Camino, he ignores it. The college kid who works the front desk was in today, and Krissy might be small, but she’s fierce, and would run interference on any customers. Happily. With a rifle, if he let her.
Usually, Dean doesn’t mind the customer service side of his business. He likes talking to people about cars, and he’s good at it, but today was a day he didn’t want to face the public He would have stayed home, only he’d probably end up day drinking until he passed out. The five-year anniversary of Benny’s death wasn’t a day he should be spending alone at home.
So, he’d come into work, told Krissy he didn’t want to be disturbed, and went to work on the recalcitrant El Camino Bobby had dropped off, that’d been taking up real estate in his garage for the last few weeks.
With AC/DC blasting on the stereo in the corner, head under the hood of the El Camino, he doesn’t hear Krissy’s footsteps until she’s standing by his elbow.
“Boss?”
Swearing, he jumps and barely avoids colliding his elbow with the engine block. “Jesus fuck Krissy!” Reaching for a dirty rag, he wipes his hands as clean as he can. “What are you doing sneaking up on me?”
Fixing him with a level stare, she doesn’t even flinch. Any other day, he’d respect it. “There’s someone here to see you.”
“Tell them I’m not here.”
“Don’t know if I can do that, boss.” Krissy goes from glaring at him to studying her fingernails with their fancy manicure, the kind that’s never been seen in the garage before she started working there. “It’s a girl.”
He rolls his eyes, turning back to the El Camino and throwing over his shoulder “You’re a girl, you talk to her.” Maybe if he ignored her she’d go away, and he could go back to diagnosing what exactly the hell is wrong with the piece of junk Bobby dumped on him.
She’s undeterred though, opening her phone and doing something with it that ends with the music in the stereo cutting out.
“Boss. She asked for ‘that asshole Dean Winchester’.” Her face is serious, even with the ridiculous air quotes. She stares him down, and its Dean who blinks first.
“Shit. Okay.” He wipes his hands again on the already dirty rag. “Lead the way.”
They stop by the sink for Dean to scrub his hands as clean as they’re probably ever going to get. His mind briefly flashes back to his dad – coming home with engine grease under his fingernails and on his coveralls.
He scrubs harder, trying to shake the image away. He doesn’t need any more memories today. He’d already run the full gauntlet when he woke up.
Krissy isn’t wrong. There is a girl in the front office. Waiting by the desk, wearing a school uniform he doesn’t recognise from any of the kids he sees in the neighbourhood. Her head buried in her phone, radiating teenage attitude even at this distance.
She looks up when he opens the door, and he sees the flash of uncertainty cross her face before she schools it back into disinterest. But there’s tension there, Dean can feel it. She isn’t here looking for a job, and she isn’t a rich teenager wanting a custom upgrade to the first car their daddy bought them.
Dean doesn’t know what this is, but he’s got a bad feeling. And his bad feelings are usually right.
Krissy barrels straight through the tension, snorting and folding her arms to lean up against the door frame. “You wanted to see the boss. I found him for you.”
“Yeah, thanks Veronica Mars, I’ll put my check in the mail for you.”
Dean reaches out an arm as Krissy bristles and takes a step forward, shaking his head at her. “Krissy, why don’t you go out to lunch? Charge it to petty cash.”
Again, with the staring competition, but this time it’s Krissy who breaks away first. “Sure thing, boss. But if you need anything, I’ll be right next door at Beth’s.”
She leaves, nearly shoulder-checking the teenager on the way out. The girl flips her the bird. He doesn’t know what went down before he arrived in from out the back, but he’ll quiz Krissy later. He’ll probably get an earful off Beth as well, knowing Krissy she’s next door telling on him to the café owner.
The girl leans back against the counter, sizing him up. She doesn’t appear to like what she sees. “You’re Dean Winchester?”
He pastes an easy smile on his face, going for the charm that usually wins over his female customers. “Yeah, apparently. What’s with the attitude, Miley Cyrus?”
“Eat me, Hasselhoff.”
Charm doesn’t work, so he tries a new tactic. “Okay, cool it. Yes, I’m Dean Winchester. I don’t know who you are though, where the attitude is coming from, or what you’re doing in my garage when we’ve got a big old closed sign on the door.”
She dodges the questions. He sees that uncertainty creeping back under the bluff and bluster. “Why are you closed on a random Thursday, if you and the receptionist are here?”
He can play the avoidance game, too. He’s probably been playing it since before she was born, god help him. “Look. You’re clearly here for a reason. Let’s start over. I’m Dean Winchester, and you are…?” He stretches out his hand for her to shake.
After a heartbeat of hesitation, she shakes it. “I’m Claire Braeden-Novak, and I’m 15 years old and an Aquarius.”
Oh. Maths was never his strong suit, but the numbers fall into place quicker than he’d like them to.
“My mom was Lisa Braeden.”
Oh shit.
“And you’re that asshole Dean Winchester who bailed on his pregnant girlfriend 16 years ago.”
Fuck.

If Dean gets to have his nerdy little interests then I think Claire should too. And actually I love the idea of her being a fan of Doctor Who. I feel like she’d identify so much with the 9th Doctor especially - he’s kind of a jaded loner who’s been through hell and still bears the scars. Also she would love Ace from the classic era, just for being so badass and generally awesome. (And sometimes when life gets too shitty Claire daydreams about leaving everything behind and going off with the Doctor in the TARDIS herself to have adventures)
I also think Claire would do everything to hide her Doctor Who obsession from the other Sisters because she thinks they’d tease her about it and it doesn’t fit her image. But one day Kaia finds a bunch of Doctor Who magazines and DVDs hidden under her bed. She doesn’t say anything, but on Claire’s birthday she gives her a vintage leather jacket just like the one Ace has on the show, with personalised patches and all. Claire has to try very hard not to cry

Summary: Air Force Lieutenant Dean Winchester meets Dr. Castiel Novak meet after his plane crashes. Dean navigates his newfound feelings for Cas while dealing with Sam's poor secret-keeping, his reenlistment, meeting Cas' family, and his work.
Excerpt: “How long was I out?” He was supposed to pick up Sam at 9 am, and even though he didn’t exactly ace math in school, he knew that Sam plus nighttime meant he had been here a while.
Sam coughed and brought Dean’s attention back to him. His face was pinched with worry, and he quietly replied, “Just under 24 hours.”
“Ok. And when can I leave?” Dean wanted nothing more than to get out of the hospital. Whether it was because he was used to leaving as soon as possible to keep the bills low or because of his dislike of being in the hospital, he didn’t know. He didn’t hate the doctors, really; His favorite tv show is Dr. Sexy after all. He just hated being the patient.
Dean checked himself over and didn’t find any life-threatening injuries. His arm looked banged up, and he had several bandages around his limbs and torso, but looked pretty okay considering.
“I’m afraid you’ll have to stay for at least the night, Mr. Winchester.” He couldn’t see the doctor yet, but his voice was deep and gravelly, so Dean opted to pretend his doctor was Dr. Sexy and that he was one of the patients in the soap opera to calm himself down. After all, in the tv show you’re more likely to die if you’re a doctor than a patient. Usually in a ridiculous, drama-filled accident.
With that decided on, Dean shifted to look past Sam, intending to say some childish retort like “why not?” but his response died on his tongue when he saw the man who had entered the room and he instead said, “Blue eyes.” Out loud. Not the most coherent thought, and it earned a look from Sam that both screamed that Dean was insane and some sort of weird knowledge that Dean was ready to attempt to decipher right now.
Regathering his thoughts, he tried again. “You were on the rescue team. I remember seeing you.”
“If you remember that, you may be allowed to leave sooner than expected. You were unconscious almost the entire flight, so the fact that you’ve retained your short-term memories may mean your concussion isn’t extremely severe.”
“Flight?” Dean asked as the doctor came over to check his wounds and started to shine a light in Dean’s eyes to check for signs of a head injury. Now that Dean wasn’t out of it, he could see the doctor had dark, messy hair and was about his height (he guessed, he was pretty sure standing up to find out wouldn’t be appreciated). And he has really fucking blue eyes. It made sense to Dean that they were the only thing that he picked up on when he was half-conscious. They’re one of the deepest and brightest colors Dean had ever seen, and he guessed that they were the most interesting color visible and that’s why his brain had focused on them.

Sidenote to begin this recap: Boris will shamelessly plug a little GEM of a show that no one watched called Halt and Catch Fire. Strong female leads, queer main character(s), fantastic and compelling dive into the tech/gaming boom of the 1980s. It’s not remotely supernatural but it is so good!! (And you might spy Claire Novak at some point as well.) It’s on Netflix, watch it everybody! On to the show….
A young couple drive drunk down the road looking for tacos. The GPS leads them down a very interesting detour —right to a bridge under construction. When the dude mouths off to the GPS, it tells his companion, Janet, to get out, and then the car proceeds to drive off the bridge.
Sam and Dean talk at the bunker about Cas locating Cain. Dean is doubtful that Cain will have the answer. He does have a case, and they head off for Iowa.
They head to a college campus to talk to Janet. They introduce themselves as Agents Grohl and Cobain (and I want to scream that I’m old and these are way too obvious aliases, but … so are other band member names, so…sigh). (Natasha: LOL, right? It hurts…)
Ugh, they talk to the girl about what happened and when Dean isn’t looking at young coeds, he’s dumb about technology. Hoohoohoo, SO funny. Also, Dean is in the Oregon Trail generation, and while he maybe never played that game in school, he knows PLENTY about technology. Hrmph.
Anyway, Janet reveals the car belonged to Joey —who died in Afghanistan. Billy got it when Joey died.
The brothers head to the salvage yard to scope out the truck. They find ectoplasm and EMF. It appears the big brother didn’t like the baby brother, and didn’t want him driving the car. “I get it.” Lol, Dean. They salt and burn the car.
A sorority girl, blessed with the natural ability to sleep with her TA for better grades, chills in her room. She chats with “a friend” on The Social Media. The chat reveals a secret the girl doesn’t want out. She deletes the conversation, and turns off her computer, but it turns back on. She unplugs the computer and turns it off again. The air grows frosty. 810 810 810 scroll across her monitor. She runs to her door, but it’s too late. Her power cord strangles her to death.
Dean continues to not act his age (why, SHOW, why?) They get to the new crime scene and ponder how the ghost is jumping from one machine to another. They interview the roommate and ask her if Julie knew Billy. Everyone knew him.
Dean and Sam head to the cafeteria for some food (Dean, I remember froyo at the push of a button any time I wanted it —and it was a joy.)
(Okay, but seriously, I’m watching this episode out of order and WHAT is happening at this point to make Dean act the way he’s acting? Is it the Mark??? I know he eats like a pig on occasion, and that’s a reflection of his state of mind, but ogling women, eating horribly, acting dumb —there’s A LOT in this episode.)
Sam stole Julie’s computer and is rifling through her social media and deleted files. He finds the chat, and does a quick search to find three addresses with 810 in them.
They pull up to 810 Downs Drive. They follow a woman who walks to a post where she collects day old (but very much alive) flowers for disposal.
The woman explains that her husband was killed in a car accident about 9 months ago. She sees these flowers and feels like they’re taunting her. The woman sees a college student from a sorority leave them.
A little research reveals that the dead husband, Andrew, was cremated.
Julie’s roommate, Delilah, stresses about the feds calling her while Kyle scrolls Sext’r. She thinks they should come clean. He tells her that isn’t happening, and she storms off.
Kyle gets a chat in the app from an obvious catfisher account, proceeds to text gross things, and then gets a call. “What time is it?” a male voice shouts and “8:10” appears on the stereo. The kid’s sound system ramps up until Kyle’s head melts.
Later, Dean recounts what happened to Kyle to Sam and Delilah.
Dean and Sam grill Delilah about the accident and the meaning behind 8:10. She confesses that she’s going to be the next victim. All four of the kids were engrossed in social media while driving the night of Andrew’s death. The driver ran over the center line and ran the teacher’s car off the road and into a pole. At first Andrew was hurt but alive, but a loose power line falls onto his car and incinerates him. Rather than helping him or calling for help, they drive off.
Dean and Sam immediately spring up and pull out large shakers of salt, sealing the doorway and making a ring around a chair. They’re gonna take care of Andrew…just as soon as they figure out what’s tying him to Earth. Sam heads off to investigate while Dean holds down the fort.
Dean paces around Delilah’s room like a trapped tiger while Delilah spills her guts about her guilt over the accident. Now THIS is a conversation Dean can get into! “I have made more mistakes than I can count. Ones that haunt me day and night,” Dean responds. He tells her his coping strategies of choice: whiskey and denial. Dean. Bean. He ACTUALLY recommends airing out her dirty laundry and seeking forgiveness.
Sam surveys the power lines by the accident site. The lines feed into a wifi tower nearby. Andrew’s a ghost in the machine. The…….WiFi machine. Sam experiences a real 802.11g moment and explains that Andrew’s spirit (aka collection of “electrical impulses”) just transferred over to another current after he died. (I am always amused when the show’s mythology veers into something new, only to completely discard it for the rest of the series run.)
Dean starts on his mission to turn off the routers in the house, but Andrew’s ghost appears on every screen. Dean smashes the heck out of every single device in the room. That seems cathartic! They race down to the basement - the only room in the house without any kind of internet access (or cell signal).
Sam heads to Andrew’s widow’s house, his awkward opening line interrupted by her immediately guessing that he’s there about Andrew. She tells him that he started writing to her online after he died.
She tells Sam that she accepted the online haunting because it was at least some part of him. (I hope the first thing she did was buy a pottery wheel.) After a little while, he started acting oddly and talking about revenge. She knows he’s killing college students but has sunk herself nice and deep into a pit of denial.
In the sorority’s basement, there’s a sound… Dean searches the cushions and finds a working cell phone. Andrew’s ghost appears. They fight and Dean tries talking to Andrew. “Take it from me. The more you kill, the crazier you get.” Oh, Dean Bean.
Dean calls Sam and puts him on speaker, telling the ghost to jump into the light instead of seeking catharsis-by-murder. While Dean gets the stuffing beaten out of him, Andrew’s widow video calls her murderous husband. She tells him to move on. Andrew weeps at her words and then dissolves into light.
Later, Dean and Sam drop off Delilah at the widow’s house so she can apologize, per Dean’s suggestion.
The grieving widow invites Delilah in to murder her - er, have a peaceful chat. Dean tells Sam that he realized he can find peace by Saving People, Hunting Things™ (you know, the family business). He wants to give up on finding a cure for the Mark.

claire's favorite holiday is shavuot
for @jupernaturalweek day 2: prayer/blessings/trust
jody and the girls all pile in the kitchen to help her make a cheesecake recipe she got off dean. claire isn’t much of a baker but she likes whipping the cream and sugar together by hand to feel her muscles burn from something other than a fight.
kaia tries to stay up with her for tikkun leil but ends up falling asleep pressed against claire's side on the living room couch. she would wake her and wave her off to bed, but kaia rarely sleeps so soundly. claire grabs her headphones instead and listens to a session on the queer interpretations of the book of ruth with the steady rise of kaia’s chest keeping time beside her.
claire never liked school. at first, because being shuffled from foster home to foster home made it all seem pointless. who cared if she skipped class, or failed math at her 4th school that year? later, college felt like a waste for entirely new reasons. jody wanted her to go; she’d be thrilled at claire’s successes, but there were monsters to hunt and innocent people to save. what if another kid lost their parents while she was debating egyptian mythology with frat bros who just wanted their easy humanities credit? it wasn’t worth it.
but claire loves learning and she loves text study. she’s an ace at research and has an eye for pattern recognition that would put people twice her age to shame. torah study and debate lights her up with the same rush as finally solving a complicated hunt that no one else could. by the time the sun rises claire is practically glowing with excitement and has a mental list of new books she wants to order.
kaia stirs awake during nisim b'chol yom and readjusts to lean her head on claire’s shoulder. claire wraps her arm around her as she finishes the final blessing and tallies a few more silently: the stolen pieces of herself she gains back with every day, kaia well-rested and smiling up at her, her family so much bigger than she ever dreamed of, and all safe. all happy. the sun is rising on sioux falls and claire novak is content.
