A Feud to Carry Vol. 2, 2.1.24 “30 Days; Or Less”
February is the month of mistakes Trial and error The second beginning, to pick up the pieces Left by January, left by the prior year Left by everyone around you And make something of the days Building each one upon the next Snapping into place The shortest month Therefore the safest to try Let this be the beginning Of the next day and the next day Each step gaining speed In the downhill race to March Stumbling to find that rhythm Even if you tumble and roll Towards that goal You are still, yes still, moving forward

Detective Comics #1077 brought the Cass back. So how'd she do in this outing? Well, here are my thoughts on the issue...
So the Cass section is pretty early in the issue itself within the second scene and is pretty fascinating with several layers. #1 in that Selina recruited Cass off-panel.
I mean it probably wasn't hard. "Hey Cass you wanna save Batman?" "Yeah."
Bam.
Easy peasy.
I'm just gonna overlook the nonsense that is "Gotham War", and not overthink or mock that any further to this. It's just simple characterizations of two characters with a similar need: Bruce getting freed.
However, this leads me to my #2 interesting thing that occurs on the page. Eiko Hasigawa has beef with Cass.
Like, there's an out-of-issue story we missed here. Cause Cass/Eiko never met physically until this issue at least to my knowledge.
Tumblr media
What I am aware of is the growing disdain another Batgirl, Stephanie Brown, had for Eiko toward the end of Genevieve Valentine's Catwoman run (#35-46).
I am not aware if Steph hyped negatively Eiko to Cass. I think it's the safest bet.
However, my gut tells me an "unseen" story. Because, A.) Eiko knows Cass. B.) We know already Cass has met Selina off-panel and gotten an "art" love because of it. So it's reasonable to think Cass has met several of those who worked/allied with Selina closely.
Regardless of my theories, the moment is a nice hype package to remind us how deadly Cass is and interestingly how much she is acting like her biological mom here in manner and appearance.
I get why Cass is in gameface mode. Gotham is in hell given it's Tuesday and she has to showcase this side of her. Even when there's a Lian Harper nearby to "lighten" the mood.
Tumblr media
I do find it intriguing how much Cass inherits stuff on her actual mom's side here. From clothing choices to looks. She literally is a Little Wu-San here. I am curious why writer Ram V gives her hostilities with Eiko when a Cheshire is in the same room.
Given Shiva/Cheshire's histories in Gail Simone's Birds of Prey legendary run. But I can see why because again the feud is making me ponder more so on the "what" than the easily simplistic "why" we've seen already.
I really do dig seeing Cass unmasked in this issue as it elevates her into the run and artist Jason Shawn Alexander draws a VERY mature-looking Cass here.
And that leaves us with the final "chilling" twist of who Cass will be teaming up with here. Someone, now I wonder if we'll get our SECOND mention or showing of Batgirl Vol. 1 as Cass will be teaming with Mr. Freeze for her part in this mission.
Tumblr media
Also, I do love the little bit of fathering Jim Gordon does here during this scene. He knows what Freeze is capable of (both currently in this run and of the past).
Cass? We don't see her reaction, just one panel of her agreeing which is just so Cass.
Her mindset is completely different than Gordon's. Will she trust Freeze? I guess we'll see where Ram V goes with this. Again, I find this all fascinating the bits he's put here.
You can easily see this plan all going to hell, yet also there's a "chance" this plan might work. I guess it'll all depend on who betrays who.
Again, the bits sprinkled are just stories I want to read more of, along with how the current story is going to progress.
It's all quite engaging and has me on the edge of my seat.
Anyway, #1077 of Detective Comics is yet another refreshing thrilling piece to the puzzle of this run. It feels so darn unpredictable about where it will go.
Not to mention however briefly we've seen Cass sure carries a presence about her in this run. That fills me with glee on where this will go next.
So those who haven't checked on this Tec run yet please do so as what began back in September has been an excellent jumping-back point for this run.

Magneto (Max) Trivia:
1. After Magneto was believed dead in the Genoshan holocaust, he became a popular t-shirt logo and graffiti image.
2. The DC Comics super-villain Doctor Diehard of the Extremists is based on Magneto.
3. A Jack Kirby close-up image of Magneto's face was used as source material for Roy Lichtenstein's Image Duplicator (1963).
4. While Magneto is Jewish, he maintained a cover identity as a 'Sinte Gypsy' when searching for his wife Magda. This created confusion amongst some readers as to his heritage, until it was authoritatively confirmed that he is Jewish. It should be noted that this confusion probably stems from a comic book published in the early 1990s which attempted to retcon Magneto into being a Sinti, possibly because Marvel was preparing to make Magneto a deadly villain again in the crossover called "Fatal Attractions" and they did not want to draw accusations of anti-Semitism by having one of their main villains be Jewish. This attempted retcon was corrected a few years later when it was revealed that the name "Erik Lehnsherr" and the Sinte ethnicity were part of a cover identity, as mentioned above.
5. Magneto's redemption was chronicled in the pages of New Mutants. Uncanny X-Men #150 is the first issue to start developing Magneto's origin as a prisoner of Auschwitz and his marriage to Magda.
6. Magneto's Auschwitz tattoo was originally seen as 214782 in Uncanny X-Men #161. However, this was a number too high for him to have been among the first group of prisoners to be tattooed there. The number was retconned in Excalibur (Vol. 3) #2 to 24005, but appeared again as 214782 in X-Men: Black - Magneto #1.
7. "Eisenhardt", or rather "Eisenhart" means "hard as iron", a convenient name for the Master of Magnetism. It can be pronounced as "ice 'n' heart".
8. Magneto's pseudonym "Lehnsherr" is often pronounced incorrectly as "Lanshir". Actually the name is composed of two German words: "Leh(e)n" meaning "feud" and "Herr" meaning "master" in that instance. In German 's' is a connective between two combined words sometimes. It could be pronounced as "lens hair" ("e" like in "help" but longer).[226] It's the German word for "liege lord".
9. Magneto was ranked 1st on IGN's Top 100 Comic Book Villains in 2011.
10. The album Venus and Mars by Wings included a song about superheroes called "Magneto and Titanium Man". Paul McCartney was said to have toured the Marvel offices soon after the album came out in the Bullpen Bulletins and it was claimed that he was a fan of Marvel Comics. The song referenced the names of two other Marvel villains (Titanium Man and the Crimson Dynamo). Another song to feature Magneto is the Tearjerkers' "Comic Book Heroes" from the various artists' compilation Through the Back Door, in which some of the lyrics were "Doc Ock, Von Doom and Magneto, don't wanna be like them."
11. "Magneto" was a song by the post-hardcore band Brigade, fronted by Charlie Simpson's brother Will.
12. Magneto carries an archive containing a hologram with the names of numerous mutants violently killed.
13. After his encounter with the Phoenix, his powers now more closely resemble the powers of his movie counterpart who is only able to manipulate strictly metallic objects.
14. For much of the original appearance of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, its members kept referring to him as "the Leader", instead of calling him Magneto.
15. Magneto tried to explain to the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants that their personal feelings (and the mutual dislike between team members) are meaningless. In his view, only their plans were important. However, Magneto himself had trouble controlling his anger.
16. The Toad's flattery to Magneto included proclamations that Magneto was born to rule.
17. While Toad loudly proclaimed his loyalty to Magneto, Magneto found him annoying. He threatened Toad to remain silent.
18. In an early battle between the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, the X-Men captured the Toad and the Brotherhood captured the Angel. Magneto expressed his belief that their hostage was more valuable than the "high-jumping fool", and was ready to abandon the Toad.
19. Magneto has claimed to be able to sense the greed and envy of a man's heart, even when meeting this man for the first time. He finds it easy to manipulate others through these qualities.
20. To secure victory over the X-Men, Magneto was willing to sacrifice Quicksilver's life in a deadly attack on them. He threatened to kill the Scarlet Witch as well, for defying his orders.
21. While listening to another proclamation of loyalty by the Toad, Magneto contemplated that he did not actually need the loyalty of his followers. He expected to rule over them by using their fear for him. He chose to not share his thought with the other members of the Brotherhood.
22. According to Mastermind, Magneto has no emotions and no heart.

Getting Rowdy: The Unreleased Matches of Roddy Piper
Tumblr media
A few months ago I covered the DVD set WWE released chronicling the ‘unseen’ matches of “Macho Man” Randy Savage. Today I continue that trend covering those lines of DVD collections with 2019’s Getting Rowdy: The Unreleased Matches of Roddy Piper (trailer). Like with WWE’s other ‘unreleased’ line of home videos, all the matches and segments featured in here have never been released on video before. With WWE already releasing a comprehensive three-disc DVD set to Piper with 2006’s Born to Controversy, that means we are getting a collection full of deep cuts here. This two disc DVD is compiled similarly to the Randy Savage set where we get original, newly recorded interviews intersperse with the archival content. The interviews are from Piper mega-fan, “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey which are mixed in with archived home video interviews with Piper for added context. There are six sets of Rousey interviews, and they are sporadically inserted throughout the collection which also features 19 matches, nine promos and 12 editions of Piper’s legendary interview show, Piper’s Pit. WWE has established that Rousey is essentially the endorsed successor to carry on the Piper legacy, with Ronda paying homage to “The Hot Rod” by rocking her version of Piper’s entrance attire and carrying on his nickname. With that in mind, having Ronda being the featured new set of interviews to draw from seems like a fitting choice to commemorate Piper’s career here and are nice ways to mix up this collection.
Tumblr media
Ronda’s interviews are insightful on how she drew on Roddy for inspiration on MMA needing an antagonist, and how excited she was to finally meet him. I presumed she maintained a close relationship with Piper, and was surprised to learn in Rousey’s interviews here that she only met him once early in her MMA career when she got the blessing from Roddy to use his nickname and then a second time when she appeared on Pipers podcast, which was just a month shy of his death in July of 2015. Rousey went on to say one of her biggest regrets is not having a close relationship with him. There is a nice variety of the nine Piper interviews/promos included. There is a handful of the vintage Rock ‘n Wrestling era promos where Piper bellows out promos in front of a blue screen backdrop. A nice nostalgic bonus is a few vintage commercials where Piper maniacally shouts at you to purchase the latest WWE action figures. There are a few standout go-home PPV interviews here where Piper is on fire and by the end of them he got me just as fired up as Virgil for his upcoming WrestleMania match against Ted Dibiase, and on top of that is an especially intense promo with Bret Hart leading up to their WrestleMania VIII battle. There are three Roddy promos from his late 90’s WCW days, with a bewildering rant from a cell in Alcatrez and Hulk Hogan provoking Piper to cut loose on him and Bishoff in front of his son, Colt, standing out the most. These WCW promos have boisterous crowds capturing the high times WCW was riding at that time in the ‘Monday Night Wars.’
Tumblr media
It is no surprise that Piper’s rougher, brawling style will not warrant many five star classics, but a fair amount of his 19 matches here have crowds eating up the chaos Piper is delivering. I have only seen a handful of Piper’s early NWA work before, so seeing a few more of his NWA matches unearthed for this set was a treat, and his match against Jay Youngblood is a smashmouth brawl that goes to a time limit draw, and I loved seeing Piper tag with Ole Anderson against Mike Davis and Buddy Landell. There are a lot of the big arena house show matches here that were previously televised only in local markets, and like a lot of those matches in other sets, usually feature good action until a hokey finish. That is the case here with a killer clash against Paul Orndorff in 1985 fresh into their rivalry, with the crowd going bokers for them until a double countout finish. Just as riveting is Piper’s match in this set against Rick Rude where the crowd is losing it throughout, but a lot of tomfoolery I will not even begin to explain transpires and is the catalyst for one of the strangest DQ finishes I have seen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Piper teaming with Eddie and Blue-tista, looking like gold! Piper feuding with the nWo had the crowd on its feet! There are two matches on here against Mr. Perfect worth going out of your way to see. I know Mr. Fuji was an accomplished wrestler in the 70s, but never seen him in a match until this set where he is pummeled for a couple minutes against Piper until his fellow managers run in for the save. A lot of the latter matches in the back half of Getting Rowdy are quick TV matches with wonky finishes unfortunately, but for what it is worth, still draw rabid crowd reactions. There are two Nitro bouts included against Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage in 1998, but both bouts have several nWo run-ins that result in both matches being thrown out. I forgot about Piper’s brief 2003 run with Sean ‘O Haire, so it was nice to see those two again when Piper had a short encounter with Rikishi. The last match is an awesome impromptu bout against The Miz for $5000 of The Miz’s money, with Alex Reilly (remember him!?) as guest referee in 2011. I have zero recollection of this match, and even at a couple minutes long it was an absolute delight!
Tumblr media
Getting Rowdy was jacked with 24 installments of Piper’s Pit, but WWE had quite a few more to draw upon from the vault with 12 more here. Some of the early ones in this collection that were a riot were where both Jimmy Hart and the Brooklyn Brawler ruthlessly provoke Roddy to giving them a a well-earned beatdown. There are a bunch in the second half of this set when Piper would periodically show up on RAW and SmackDown for a special Piper’s Pit. Two that really got me were one with John Cena where Piper does a tremendous job at needling Cena into living up to his then-current t-shirt slogan, ‘Rise Above Hate’ and another where Roddy moderates AJ Lee attempting to get back into Daniel Bryan’s good graces after costing him his WrestleMania match against Sheamus. I enjoyed this collection more than I anticipated. As I mentioned earlier, Piper was not known for his epic wrestling abilities, so I was not letdown from the wide range of match quality from the 19 matches in the set. There are a few matches that are hidden gems in here for what it is worth, but the real reason everyone should check out Getting Rowdy: The Unreleased Matches of Roddy Piper, is for the many unreleased promos and Piper’s Pit interviews. While he may not have been a five star wrestler, Piper was easily a five star entertainer, and that is readily apparent from beginning to end in this collection.

Aquaman (Vol 8) #2
Writer - Dan Abnett
Art - Scot Eaton and Wayne Faucher
Cover - Brad Walker, Drew Hennessey and Gabe Eltaeb
“The Drowning” Part 2
The blood feud between Aquaman and Black Manta crescendos in the ruins of Spindrift Station after Manta’s attack.  Can Aquaman hope to stand up to vengeance caused by years of hurt and anger?
Of course after I talked about how much I thought Spindrift Station was a cool setting and base of operations for this new book, it’s immediately destroyed!  But in service to this story it all makes sense.  Manta is trying to take everything he can from Aquaman - the station, Mera, any allies, Aquaman’s reputation, and indeed his life.  Manta’s desire is to completely strip Aquaman down and leave nothing as a legacy.  Those are some high stakes and it leads to several pages of high drama.
This issue has a ton of action, but it’s really secondary to the emotional issues that both Aquaman and Manta carry with them.  The “discussion” they have during their fight is much more poignant and interesting than the actual battle.  This is the all-out confrontation these characters have been headed toward for years (if not decades, honestly).  I think this is a true highlight for Aquaman fans, but more casual fans might not feel the depth and importance of this issue.  I’m not a “super-fan” by any means, but the emotional resonance is felt on every page.
I felt that Eaton’s artwork here was pretty good - not spectacular, but good.  He keeps the characters central to the frames, not letting the action overshadow the emotional content of the dialogue - that’s the best part of art.  Manta’s helmet flies off during the fight allowing us to see his expressions and the literal scars on his face making it easier to see his expressions.  I felt the art suffered when the characters, and particularly their faces, were smaller in the panels because there was a lot less detail and the faces became rather bland.  That was true of everyone throughout the book.  The action panels were also pretty well done, with decent atmosphere and motion.
Overall a solid book in Aquaman history and a great suggested read for every fan.

Thank you for asking!  I assume this is for RWBY, but will also answer for HTTYD as well since both are my main fandoms.  This turned out a bit long, so kept most of it under the cut.
19. What is one thing you hate most about your fandom?
For RWBY... there’s a lot I dislike.  I think the biggest issue, however, is how generally dismissive if not outright hostile subgroups of the fandom are to others.  Be it for how people feel about certain characters, whether they consider post-vol 3 personally canon, and especially what ships they like.  I know these are issues with many fandoms, but holy fuck, it feels like RWBY ramps it up to eleven sometimes.
For HTTYD, this was a bit trickier, but I think... it’s the massive divide that happened after Race to the Edge, and to a lesser extent, The Hidden World.  I’m not a fan of the latter and don’t regard it as canon, and there have been many that have argued RTTE isn’t canon either, but gods I recall the big feuds and how many people ended up leaving just because people were butthurt about what they considered as having happened.  I kinda wish we all just... got along and talked about what we liked about each part of the franchise more and bonded over that... though, I guess I should also do that as well... ^^;
16. What would you change in the show?
Easy, I wouldn’t have killed off Pyrrha.  Others have gone on about why her death doesn’t really do much in the grand scheme of thing instead of being the big event that was totally necessary, especially with Penny being back and having zero negative impact from being cut to pieces on accident.  Instead, I’ll just say that there would have been a lot more potential having her get through the fall of Beacon, injured but alive.  We could have seen her deal with the fallout of her actions, her status as the ‘invincible girl’ stripped away in the worst possible manner, and have her reflect on destiny, what she wants out of life, and what she is willing to do and give up to get it... but instead we have ashes in the wind with only a sliver of hope that she is somehow brought back.
For HTTYD... I guess for starters, I’d give Astrid have more of a role in both the TV show and HTTYD 2.  I’ve stated before that I dislike that Astrid is more or less relegated to the sidelines in the second film, and it’s a bummer that she has a paltry handful of episodes that focus on her, especially with how many we got just on Fishlegs and him dealing with his cowardice for the umpteenth time.  Additionally, would have developed the romance betwen Astrid and Hiccup in the show more instead of having them not be a couple until the third quarter of the series when they were already shown to be a couple prior, but that’s more nitpicking than anything.  Oh, also, would have ended the third film with many of the dragons staying or otherwise living outside of the Hidden world, if not just only make Toothless go.
9. Most disliked character(s)?  Why?
Cinder, Cinder, Cinder, FUCKING CINDER!!  ASIDE from killing off one of my favorite characters of the show and generally fucking everything up, I just hate this character’s general personality and how they carry themselves.  I also hate how they keep coming back.  At this point it’s kind of a joke, especially since she’s both one of the most powerful characters with her maiden powers, and at the same time one of the most ineffectual.  Her only personal big victory was killing Pyrrha off, and after that she can barely manage to do much of anything aside from being an annoyance.  What bugs me even more are fans that clamber for her to have some manner of redemption, like... no, no she doesn’t deserve one, not after everything she’s done and tried to do.
For HTTYD, I hate to say it, but it’s Fishlegs.  I don’t straight up hate and despise him like I do Cinder, but he’s easily my least favorite of the primary cast.  Think part of it is his design.  It’s not that he’s a chunky lad, Gobber is also heavy set and he’s up there with some of my favorites, but Fishlegs has these weird proportions and shapes.  No neck, his head basically jutting out of the top front of a blocky torso, giaaaaaaaaaaant arms that nearly touch the ground, and teeny wheeny legs.  It also doesn’t help that his character can be surmised as ‘cowardly bookwarm/nerd’ and his episodes usually revolve around the same handful of issues.  It would be a bit better if he had less of them, but gods he gets a bit too much screentime in the TV series.  Also, he rides probably the least interesting dragon species to me, so that also doesn’t help.

The Feud Vol 1: 25 | 25
“Change my name?!” Consort looked sceptical…. That didn’t bode well.
“It’s a very simple, yet complicated solution. The contract specifically prevents Consort Thebe from joining Dillard Investments, but if you were to change your name there would be no legal ramifications.” Contessa calmy explained.
“But.. I would be given up any hopes of redeeming my family’s name – The only legacy I would be leaving would that of a man who sold his name for his own benefit!”
“Unless we cover it up as something different!”
“What do you mean?”
“You and I get married - As you know my family has strict matriarchal traditions. It would be logical for you to give up your name.” – Her voice was cool and calm, never displaying the conflicting feelings inside her.
“You would do that?” he asked, genuinely touched that she would do that for him.
“I would” she nodded. “I know it wouldn’t be a marriage based on love… at first… but who knows? Besides, it would be based on mutual respect.”
Consort didn’t need to hear anymore. The fact that she didn’t love him did hurt, though he would never admit it to her. Other than that, it was the perfect deal. He would be a Capp –  A CAPP! His children would carry the Capp name.
Her lack of affection towards him did bother him, but he could change her mind – he was sure of it. It was simply something new to aspire towards. Though he didn’t have a ring, he went down on knee.
“Let’s do this then” he said and smiled at her.
The Feud is taking a week off while I prep Vol 2. :)

Tales From My Bookshelf
For the past couple of months, as I’ve languished in a state of apathy and ennui, I’ve finally been taking the time to go through my bookshelf and read some of the preposterous amount of comics I own. I figured I’d write about a few of them.
Hell Yeah
This one had been sitting on my shelf, generally ignored and overlooked for some time before I picked it up and remembered why that was; It’s really not very good. The story is plodding, constantly building up with a sense that something is about to happen, only for nothing to actually happen, even by the time the actual climax of the one and only volume of this story ends. Had it actually led with the interesting stuff, maybe this wouldn’t have ended up as an orphaned series. The main character is the kind of utterly tedious serial screwup that always pops up in these kinds of stories, surrounded by a bunch of competent and capable women who would be much more interesting main characters if only they weren’t utterly flat. It ends with a decent hook for the never made second volume, which only makes the fact that the first volume was wasted on ultimately irrelevant setup even more annoying.
Then there’s the art, and I’m no technical expect, but it’s real bad. It’s got a second generation descendent of Frank Quitely look to it which would generally work for me, but the character designs are uninspired and the female figures are just awful. Like, distractingly bad. Every single female character in the book, including the main character’s middle aged mother, is rendered with the same giant doe eyes, wasplike waist, and improbably body hugging clothing of a thirteen year old’s confused fantasies. This stands in somewhat upsetting contrast to the male characters, who are generally dressed and built in ways which make sense for who they’re supposed to be, a consideration which the women don’t get.
Overall, I rapidly remembered why I hadn’t bothered to revisit this series in years, Hell Yeah elicits anything but its titular exclamation.
Amazing Spider-Man: Learning to Crawl
Dan Slott’s run on Amazing Spider-Man has never really been for me, he’s interested in aspects of the character which I’m really not, but Ramon Perez’s involvement with this book was enough to make me pick it up when I saw it on the shelf way back. It’s a thoroughly gorgeous book and a fun story going back to the early days of Spider-Man as a teenaged underdogn which is both always fun and somewhat necessary given how far the character’s status quo has drifted over the years. It feels like a logical updating of the Ditko era, in that of course Peter Parker would be sent to a guidance counsellor after his uncle dies and he starts flaking on classes, of course there are resources and groups like the AV club that nerdy kids can join and enjoy. Even the way the Clash gets woven into Spider-Man origin story, as someone who posts Spider-Man public debut online, feels fresh without being an overly coincidental way of tying him in. The whole relationship between the two strikes a good balance between the Ditko era sensibility of Spidey’s rogues being unrelated criminals and the later convention of a preposterous number of Peter Parker’s friends and associates being supervillains or supervillain adjacent.
Unfortunately, rereading this book now, my problem with it remains what it’s always been: It’s a shaggy dog story. Slott is hemmed in by continuity here and so can’t have it retconned that Peter Parker had this previously unmentioned but hugely important to him support network in high school, so at the end of the story the whole thing effectively gets chucked out the window. All of the characters who were introduced, all of the ideas and the relationships, are taken apart because they don’t fit with prior continuity and thus can’t be carried forward. It feels cheap and unsatisfying, and left me disappointed as a reader.
Learning to Crawl is a generally a really fun book and the kind of thing which I’d like to see more of, but it feels hamstrung by its inability to be more important. Honestly, as much as I don’t care for Slott’s writing direction, these ideas felt better suited to an Ultimate Spider-Man style reboot than an unfortunately inconsequential mini.
Magneto Vol. 1: Infamous
As a reader, one kind of book which I tend to enjoy is propulsive, ultraviolent action, stuff like the Ellis/Shalvey/Bellair Moon Knight, and so I have a great amount of affection for this book. Basically, the series repositions Magneto as a kind of mutant Punisher, going after the enemies of mutantkind. The whole concept strikes an excellent balance between Magneto as a villain who audiences want to root for and the unfortunately toothless characteriszation of Magneto as X-Men elder statesman. The art duties bounce around in this series, but Gabriel Walta takes on the bulk of them, and his shadowy, low key take on the proceedings looks wonderful, as does minor but welcome revamp of the main character’s costume to consist of just the helmet and an overcoat. Some occassionally overwrought narration aside, I like most of what this book does with Magneto, turning him into an unrepetent wrecking ball of a protagonist with a warped idea of justice.
Unfortunately, what liked about this book was not to last, and the very next volume saw the series sucked into Marvel’s highly unfortunate and highly forgettable Axis crossover event for several issues, and then recentred around Magneto trying to rebuild Genosha. What follows is'nt altogether awful, but it lacks the simplicity of this first volume, and I can’t help feeling that this book would have been much better off allowed to putter along on its own without interruption or retooling. What could have been a last reinvention of the character ended up as an unfortunately shortlived experiment.
Sabretooth Swordsman
This is a short one, but about a month ago I was talking with a friend of mine about comics and cartoons and thought of Sabretooth Swordsman as something which would probably appeal to him as a Rick and Morty fan. So the other day I picked it up again for a reread, and it really didn’t disappoint. It’s utterly bizarre and totally singular and totally up my alley as a reader. It’s grotesquely violent, goofy, gross, and more than a little influenced by the conventions of videogames.
It’s a comic which I would recommend to someone without provision, provided they’re into that sort of thing. It’s just so joyous and silly, and I love it completely.
Casanova: Acedia Vols. 1 and 2
I found myself rereading the previous volumes of Casanova recently and decided to get caught up on the most recent iteration of the series. I’d started reading Acedia in singles, but fell off somewhere around issues five or six during a period of intense malaise. Some things read better collected though, and I was feeling a touch nostalgic, so I picked up both volumes of Acedia on a whim.
Even for a series as consciously weird as Casanova, Acedia is odd. The titular character finds himself amnesiac in a parallel version of Hollywood which may or may not be our own, based on the ending of the previous series, hunted by strange extradimensional occultists and encountering a cast made up of analogues of his old associates. The series has always jumped around timelines and realities, but this story left me more consciously confused than any of the previous ones. Casanova’s mentor figure/boss has a backstory which seemingly ties back into the world of the previous three volumes, but the rest of the supporting cast is made up of characters who are parallel universe versions of his old friends, and the series’ new bad guys appear to be led by the long absent Zephyr Quinn, who had seemingly ended her feud with her brother.
Acedia is also a lot less concise than the previous iterations of the series, which restricted themselves to a volume each. Not only is Acedia twice as long, but it also doesn’t have an ending to speak of, it just sort of stops. We’re introduced to the characters and finally find out who the villains are if not why they’re coming after Casanova, and then the whole things just ends. I legitimately found myself googling and checking the Image Comics website to find out if I’d accidentally missed a third volume on the shelves or if there were uncollected single issues I was missing. They weren’t, the whole endeavour was unceremoniously abandoned. Just like this review.

This Month’s Reads - February
Late is better than never! Here’s what I read in February! highlights: Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee, The Scorpio Races, This Is Kind of an Epic Love Story,  Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End
Tumblr media
[image description: the covers for the books listed below]
Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee: An Indian History of the American West (Dee Brown)
Indigenous history was always at best a footnote during my school years and at worst whitewashed under buzzwords like “manifest destiny.” Thus, a lot of the history covered in this book was either new to me or only familiar in an “Oh, I recognize that name” sense. Since this book focused on a specific period, I’d like to later read something broader (and from an Indigenous writer).
I’ll be blunt: this book will break your heart, infuriate you, or both. Certain passages invoked in me a sense of horror only matched by the reading I did on the Nanjing massacre in college. It was well-written, but I don’t think I can recommend it to anyone besides the white people who dearly need to read it.
Yuri Is My Job! vol 1 (miman, translator: Diana Taylor)
Hime works for a themed cafe where the staffers roleplay as elite Catholic schoolgirls. This should be a walk in the park for Hime--for years, she’s cultivated a cute facade in hopes of attracting a billionaire husband. However, her acting chops can only carry her so far and she’s frequently baffled by the strange behavior of one particular coworker.
This was different enough from the usual “high school yuri” to keep my interest, but I wonder how long the mangaka can milk the set up for plot. I suspect that rather than developing the main couple, the mangaka will instead spend time pairing off all the cast members--which some people enjoy, but I don’t especially. I’ll give it another volume before deciding whether to drop.
The Other Me
This month’s transreading!
Tumblr media
[image description: the covers for the books listed below]
The Scorpio Races (Maggie Stiefvater)
I’m a big fan of Stiefvater’s Raven Cycle series, but I had a harder time getting into her Wolves of Mercy Fall series. However The Scorpio Races, a standalone novel written between these two series, hit just the right place for me.
I’ve never been a horse person and I’ve never visited Ireland, but this book evoked a strange sense of nostalgia within me. It’s one of those narratives where the scenes and the setting feel real, bolstered by the author’s usual stylized prose. I enjoy fantasy books that take an existing bit of folklore or legend and put a unique twist to it and Stiefvater’s wild, flesh-eating water horses were very on brand for her. Another contender for favorite book of 2019.
This Is Kind of an Epic Love Story (Kheryn Callender)
Nathan Bird is a huge fan of movies, but he doesn’t believe in happy endings--especially not for real life romances. It’s hard to blame him since most of the romantic relationships he’s encountered in his short life have ended poorly. But his cynicism is put to the test when childhood friend/crush Oliver James Hernández moves back into the neighborhood.
Perhaps because this book references films so frequently, it’s easy to imagine it as a movie. I hope it becomes a movie because I think more audiences would benefit from this realistic portrayal of messy teenage friendships and romances. It was also great to see a well-rounded cast that is diverse in multiple ways. I certainly felt transported back into my high school years.
Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End (Atul Gawande)
Most people don’t like to talk to their loved ones about the end of their lives. However, as this book argues, it’s one of the most important things you can do to help the final years, months, weeks, or days go well.
Dr. Gawande treats us to a comprehensive exploration of the nature of aging, how medicine has changed aging, what tends to happen with people at the end of their life, and how we can do better for the dying and their loved ones. Both research and personal stories are told in a compelling, easy to read way. I’d recommend this book to anyone, but especially those who are either aging or caring for an aging loved one.

Gerard & Jacques vol 1 & 2 (Fumi Yoshinaga, translator: unlisted)
This month’s BL LookBack!
Only Human (Sylvain Neuvel)
Final book in the Themis Files trilogy. Rose, Vincent, and Eva return to Earth after being stuck on the alien planet for nine years. Earth, however, is on the brink of World War III, and Vincent and Eva are locked in a painful family feud.
This is one of those trilogies where I loved the first book, liked the second book OK, and only felt “Eh” for the last book. Not to say that the book was bad-- it wasn’t. The series has just changed a lot since its beginning. Mostly, I miss the mystery aspect that the series formerly held. I do still love the cast for the audiobooks though-- I wish more books were fully casted when recorded.

A Feud to Carry Vol. 2, 2.16.24 “Mourning Star"
My wings, two rotting petals To crumpled colors autumn felled Whipped up to slow descent and falls Too fragile to fly, to love, to be held Summer’s flight of fancy succumbed Dillied and dallied Thrummed and hummed Crashing in beautiful fiery possibilities; seed Will the hot air rise And with me too, be carried Or will I fall on failing, flailing wing from lies Believed in – oh, father, brother, spirit now long buried Before you wake in winter, give spring and summer chance For only autumn, shall be my one true romance

What are your thoughts on Guardians Vol. 2, if you've seen the movie yet?
Sorry it took me a while to get around to this one. When I first received this anon, I hadn’t seen the movie yet, but I was scheduled to in a couple of days.
THIS POST CONTAINS A LOT OF SPOILERS FOR GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOLUME 2. STOP READING PAST THIS POINT IF YOU DON’T WANT TO SEE SPOILERS
Also, it got longer than I thought, so it’s under a cut.
Honestly? It was entertaining and all, but I didn’t really like it with the same ferocity that I liked the first one. Or a lot of Marvel movies, to be honest. It fell flat in a lot of spots. Now, I will fully admit that I was looking for this one to be the big “pick-me-up” after Civil War, and it didn’t turn out to be that, so that colored a lot of my opinion. I have higher hopes for Thor: Ragnarok now.
To begin with, I would have thought the five of them would feel a lot more like a cohesive team by now. The first film had a lot of leeway in having them not get along because it’s their origin story and how they went from strangers to teammates. But they actually felt MORE like a team in that one, their ORIGIN STORY, than they did in the movie where they’re actually supposed to be working as one. And I realize as I’m thinking it over that the majority of this problem came from Quill and Rocket. Their feud basically took up way more screen time than it needed to, and I was yelling at BOTH of them “You should have learned way better than this by now.” It was admittedly a quick and convenient way to get Rocket and Yondu to become the dream team, and more on that later, but I feel like there really could have been a better way to set that up. This was lampshaded with the actual pointing out of “You do nothing but yell at each other!” and the argument that that was the definition of “family,” but that felt kinda forced.
As for newcomer Mantis, she was a very cool character, but Drax playing off her revealed himself to be a lot worse of a character than he was originally written. He’s supposed to be lacking in social skills. That doesn’t equal telling somebody to their face that they’re hideous because you want to kill any notion that there should be a relationship between you and them.
Speaking of relationships, Quill/Gamora was SO forced. She basically gave him a very clear “no” when he revealed his feelings, but he just kept at it, and in the end, she admitted it…wasn’t quite “no.” Which has bad implications. Especially with him trying to kindle sparks between them IMMEDIATELY after propositioning Ayesha for sex.
I felt like the humor relied a lot more on crassness this time around, which isn’t a total turn-off except that it was so much more noticeable than in the first film. (And I was watching it with a friend who isn’t into that, and she had found the first one fun, so I flinched for her sake when the whole thing about putting Drax’s poop in Quill’s pillow was brought up.)
Nebula’s return was welcome. Her redemption arc, not so much. I liked her best when she was a mess, but definitely a villain. Back when I was asked my top ten Marvel villains, she was in the runner-ups. There was also a huge tonal dissonance between her and Gamora LITERALLY TRYING TO KILL EACH OTHER and then Gamora saving her from the spaceship wreck (the one that…only blew up because Gamora fired several rounds from a massive gun at it?) and Nebula proclaiming she “only wanted a sister.”
The entire film suffered from “MCU Villain Syndrome,” however, and I think my biggest problem with it was Ego. He didn’t seem all that engaging to me, and he REEKED of having a hidden “Surprise, he’s cruel and sadistic with a horrifying secret” twist from the very beginning. And while the plan he put into effect to get his ultimate goal contained a lot of horrifying things, such as killing Quill’s mother (MORE ON THAT LATER) and fathering and murdering all those thousands of children, the plan itself was murky at best and relied on the audience having seen that trope at play in other works to realize how “evil” it truly was. We didn’t know what it MEANT for all the planets to become part of Ego. We saw a bit of terraforming that would conceivably swallowed the life already on that planet, and that upped the stakes, but it came after the punch of the plan being told to us and the time when we should have gasped because “That’s terrible!” I would say Ego should have dropped a little exposition of how many living things would have died in order for the universe to become him, but that scene was ALREADY full of exposition that was literally there for the audience’s sake and made no sense to say to Quill.
Which brings me around to Quill’s mother. When you have your son brainwashed to your side, and he loves his mother more than anything, and you really, really, REALLY want him to stick by you and carry out your evil plan with you, the one thing you REALLY SHOULDN’T DO IS PRESS HIS BERSERK BUTTON BY ADMITTING YOU MURDERED HIS MOTHER. I’m still at a loss as to WHY Ego thought mentioning that was a good idea besides “The audience needed to know!” And, frankly, we could have gotten that tidbit from Mantis. Have her say something to the effect of “He claims it nearly killed him to put the tumor in Meredith’s head.”
Ego’s plan failed for two other reasons. First of all, the terraforming was triggered by extremely small plant-like forms, and I keep wondering what would have happened if one of them just came in contact with a weed-whacker. But more pertinent is how it actually gave him a sustaining purpose. Existence had meaning for Ego because he had this grand plan. But once he carried it out, it would be over. And then he wouldn’t have any purpose anymore because it would be DONE. He DID IT. He COMPLETED HIS PURPOSE. And existence would now be even MORE boring because everything was homogenously him. This could have at least been pointed out and lampshaded, maybe with Ego giving a defensive “shut up” because he doesn’t want to admit that he hasn’t thought the plan all the way through - or that he HAS thought the plan all the way through, but literally sees nothing else to come from it, and can’t think of any other option to give himself purpose.
Then there’s the beta villain. The Sovereign. How did this film have FOUR VILLAINS (Ego, Nebula, Taserface, and the Sovereign) and ALL FOUR managed to disappoint me completely? First of all, once Quill, Gamora, and Drax realized what Rocket had done and that’s why the Sovereign were after them, for the batteries, why not turn around and at least return the things? Would it have made the Sovereign threat go away? No. But would it at least have been a sensible and mature course of action? I suppose with the “something good, something bad, a little of both” theme the first film ended on, the Guardians couldn’t look too altruistic and had to get away with doing some crime to keep up their morally ambiguous image. Still, Quill, Gamora, and Drax all had real interest in not messing things up with the Sovereign, and it felt out of character for especially Gamora to accept the plan as “just gun it and keep the batteries.” (Maybe she knew they’d need them as a plot device later on in the final battle.) The crux of why the Sovereign didn’t work as a villain is because they were mostly IN THE RIGHT. Extreme? Yes. But did they get severely wronged? Also yes.
That’s the core of what the film did wrong. I do want to mention the things it did right.
First of all, anything and everything related to Yondu, especially his broTP with Rocket. They made really fun buddies, and Yondu deserved some depth after not being that fleshed-out in the first film. And boy, did he get his depth. He was by no means a perfect parent, but we were given a much more sympathetic lens to view his raising of Quill. His nonchalant attitude lent itself to some good character-based comedy; he’s a case where moral ambiguity and self-serving made his character more well-rounded and entertaining instead of annoying. And that meant when Rocket was playing off him, Rocket came off as less abrasive and more amusing. The scene of the two of them casually walking through Yondu’s ship and slaying mutineers with the whistle-arrow was INCREDIBLY satisfying. I will say Yondu’s death was kind of predictable (I wonder what it means that his Ravager colleagues insult him by saying he’ll never have a proper FUNERAL?), but it was also well done in the end, and if I had to pick any GotG main to die for feels, especially when it came packaged with a nice Redemption Equals Death/Heroic Sacrifice, it would have been Yondu.
The other thing I REALLY liked about the film was the way the soundtrack was integrated with the oldies from the “Awesome Mix” as part of the actual score to emphasize important events. The Sovereign gaining “Wham Bam Shang-a-Lang” as a leitmotif was both hilarious and awesome. And both times “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac was used were absolutely PERFECT and hit home just as well as original instrumentals would have; maybe even better. (I’m going to be listening to that song A LOT over the next few weeks thanks to that movie.)
The visuals were on par with the first as well, and the overall design of everything from the Sovereign to Ego’s home was absolute eye candy.
So, to sum it up, Guardians of the Galaxy volume 2 was a big step down from the original and a disappointing installment in the MCU post-Civil War, when we really needed something to start pumping the series back up for the payoff of the Infinity Stones. The character relationships were trashed, the characters themselves were a bit too edgy, and despite having all of FOUR VILLAINS to use to bolster the story, the film managed to waste four villains. But if you’re looking for a good popcorn movie with good CGI and a kickass soundtrack, or if the one thing you really care about is Yondu, then go on ahead.

Police arrest man suspected of killing Nipsey Hussle
LOS ANGELES – The man accused of gunning down rapper Nipsey Hussle in the Hyde Park neighborhood of South Los Angeles is under arrest, police announced Tuesday.
Nipsey Hussle and the man suspected of killing him, 29-year-old Eric Holder, knew each other, and the shooting appears to be the product of a personal dispute, Los Angeles police Chief Michel Moore told reporters Tuesday morning.
Moore declined to elaborate on the feud between the two, saying he didn’t want to jeopardize any potential prosecution, but he said the suspect — who has been identified via surveillance video — approached Nipsey and others multiple times, engaging them in conversation.
Eric Holder, the suspected killer of Nipsey Hussle, has been arrested and is in police custody. Thank you to both our community for the heightened awareness/vigilance, and our partners at @LASDHQ. pic.twitter.com/0zujy89Yfm
— LAPD HQ (@LAPDHQ) April 2, 2019
https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js
At one point, Holder returned with a handgun and “purposely and repeatedly fired” at the men, injuring two of them and killing the rapper, he said.
Rapper was more movement than musician
Though the rapper was a member of an arm of the Crips street gang and police believe Holder belongs to a gang as well, Moore declined to specify any gang affiliation and said the dispute between the two does not appear gang-related.
Video shows shooting
The manhunt for Holder unfolded as surveillance video emerged showing the moment Nipsey and two others were shot Sunday afternoon.
The Grammy-nominated artist was among four people standing between cars outside The Marathon Clothing store he owned in Los Angeles’ Hyde Park neighborhood, video from a surveillance camera trained on the parking lot shows.
It is not clear which of the four is Nipsey, but they appear to be casually talking as others mill about in front of the store. A figure dressed in dark clothing appears to approach the four, and everyone scatters.
Two of the people standing by the car don’t get far. They fall to the ground. One of them, wearing a white hat and shirt, tries to get back up but promptly collapses, the video, which has no sound, shows.
It is not clear if the figure in dark clothing is Holder, who police say is wanted in the homicide.
Vigil goes awry
Late Monday, about 300 people gathered around a candlelight memorial in The Marathon Clothing parking lot, feet from where the rapper was shot, when a person with a gun spurred the mourners to take off in every direction, police said.
There were initial reports of gunshots, but police quickly knocked down those reports. Moore acknowledged that two women showed up at a hospital late Monday night saying they had been shot at the vigil, but he said one of his commanders was near the scene and heard no gunshots.
“I’m lacking information that a shooting occurred,” the chief said.
The crowd fled, he said, after someone at the vigil produced a handgun and another person tried to disarm the individual. A stampede ensued.
Los Angeles police spokeswoman Meghan Aguilar described it to CNN affiliate KCAL/KCBS as “absolutely chaotic, mass panic.”
“When we were watching it from footage from overhead, it was literally people scattered in all directions,” she said.
The panic came about 8:15 p.m., Moore said, and “as (the crowd) fled, we had a series of falls and trips and injuries.” One individual was stabbed in the melee, but police have no suspect, he said.
Video from KCAL/KCBS shows mourners abruptly running through and around the candle-and-balloon memorial and into the street. Police with riot gear and batons begin forming containment lines.
People carry away the injured as emergency responders tend to people on the ground, the affiliate video shows.
Some present threw rocks and bottles at police officers, and an officer suffered a “serious cut” to his hand, requiring sutures, Moore said. At least one person was detained for disorderly conduct, Aguilar said.
Nineteen people were transported to the hospital, most of them with trample injuries, the Los Angeles Fire Department said. Two suffered critical injuries, and two more were hurt seriously. One person was hit by a car, the department said.
None of the injured people suffered gunshot wounds, Los Angeles police said.
Police ID car and alleged shooter
The grainy video of Nipsey’s shooting does not provide much in the way of detail, but police late Monday offered additional information about the shooting.
At about 3:20 p.m. Sunday, the suspect walked up to the men standing in the parking lot and opened fire, police said. He then ran down an alley and jumped into the passenger side of a car driven by an unidentified woman, they said.
The car was a white, four-door 2016 Chevrolet Cruze with the California license plate 7RJD742, police said.
Two people were transported to the hospital; one refused treatment at the scene, and Nipsey died from gunshots to the head and torso, authorities said.
The 33-year-old rhymesmith was a mainstay of the Crenshaw District where he grew up. He owned businesses there, invested in the community and counted several Los Angeles rappers among his influences and collaborators.
Nipsey Hussle and Lauren London, a hip-hop fairy tale
Two of his mixtapes — “Slauson Boy Vol. 1” and “Crenshaw” — took their names from the area. The Marathon Clothing store sits near West Slauson Avenue and Crenshaw Boulevard. Though Nipsey released several mixtapes independently or through his All Money In record label, his studio debut, “Victory Lap,” dropped last year and was nominated for a Grammy.
Before his death, Nipsey, a member of the Rollin 60s Neighborhood Crips, had requested a meeting to discuss ways to mitigate gang violence, Los Angeles police Commissioner Steve Soboroff said Tuesday, sharing an email he received from the rapper and Jay-Z’s Roc Nation.
It said, “Our goal is to work with the department to help improve communication relationships, and work towards changing the culture and dialogue between LAPD and the inner city. We want to hear about your new programs, your goals for the department, as well as how we can help stop gang violence and help you help kids.”
“The meeting will happen,” Soboroff said. “It will happen when Roc Nation and Nipsey’s family come together.”
CNN Wire contributed to this report.

August/Labor Day 2018 -*PlayLi$t of the Month*
Tumblr media
A summer that began with fireworks is now a wrap...
Folks, the last month of the summer for me has been busy. Between work, family, and a beautiful vacation to Ireland, I have not had a lot of time to write, or even truly absorb so much of the new music that has dropped in the last two months. That being said, there were more than enough potent releases in late July/August to warrant a summer close-out list with plenty of fire power!
It is ironic that a summer that kicked off with a Drake vs. Pusha T beef dominating the headlines, has drawn to a close with some of the pettiest of mainstream squabbles in recent memory. So here’s some straight talk from The Pundit: I couldn’t care less about any “feud” between Nicki Minaj and Travis Scott, and I wasn’t really moved by either of their albums. Nor do I care about Eminem trying to turn back the clock to be regain former glory at this point in his career, because I find Kamikaze to be a boring album of rants and forced threats over forgettable production, and it fails to capture even a glimpse of the greatness he showcased on his early work.
But I digress.. :-) While the mainstream may have been mostly “meh”, the underground realm was boiling over with a wealth of talent in August. I invite you to enjoy my SUMMER SLAM 2018 EDITION, LABOR DAY PLAYLIST...
1. “Cognac Colada” - Termanology feat. Willie the Kid & Crimeapple
http://www.dotgotit.com/archives/60381
(Term’s new album is stacked with plenty of bangers, but this one takes the cake. The underground veterans contribute stand-out verses, but it’s Crimeapple closes the track out with one of the summer’s strongest verses. Keep an eye out for Crimeapple, he has already accumulated an impressive set of spotlight stealing appearances this year.)
2. “Golden Fleece” - Ka & Animoss a.k.a. Hermit and the Recluse
https://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/hermit-and-the-recluse-golden-fleece/
(Only a gifted writer like Ka could pull off multiple dope thematic rap albums without sounding preachy, or sacrificing musicality, so the high quality of Orpheus vs. the Sirens should come as no surprise. The whole project is fantastic, and the lyrics are a feast for the ears throughout, but Animoss delivered one of his finest instrumentals with “Golden Fleece”.)
3. “Wet Ear Yungin” - Tuamie & Koncept Jack$on feat. Nickelus F
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh0UPcjUP8c
(Mutant Academy had a HUGE month. Tuamie’s steady hand helped insure that Emergency Raps Vol. 3 was one of the Virginia-based collective’s strongest efforts. A verse from Richmond’s own Nickelus F is more than enough to secure a placement near the top of my list, but it also doesn’t hurt that Koncept is rapidly becoming one of the best MCs in the underground scene right now.)
4. “Rosemary” - ElCamino
https://elcamino1.bandcamp.com/track/rosemary
(Camino remains one of Griselda’s secret weapons, and he more than proved his ability to stand on his own two with this new Walking On Water project. “Rosemary” is an emotional dedication to Camino’s late grandmother, and a great example of how even on a low budget, raw honesty over a simple, soulful loop can make for impactful music.)
5. “Sirens” - Ka & Animoss a.k.a. Hermit and the Recluse
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aPzyQXR1XG8
(Such a gorgeous intro to a terrific new album.)
6. “Mood Ring” -  Reese LaFlare feat. Pusha T
https://pitchfork.com/reviews/tracks/reese-laflare-mood-ring-ft-pusha-t/
(I wish Astroworld had more joints that sounded like this one...experimental, but focused production that doesn’t come at the expense of rap skills. Atlanta’s Reese LaFlare doesn’t bring a new set of skills to the trap table, but he’s strong enough as a rapper with an ear for beats to grab anyone’s attention with songs like “Mood Ring”. And a new verse from Push certainly helps!)
7. “Talk In Code” - Fly Anakin & Big Kahuna OG
https://mutantacademyrva.bandcamp.com/track/talk-in-code-prod-ohbliv
(Still so much to digest from the Mutant Academy this month - fans know that they unleashed more than one dope tape in August - but two of the crew’s frontmen, Fly Anakin and Big Kahuna OG, were so potent on this joint I could not allow just one Mutant Academy track on this month’s top ten.)
8. “The Soul” - REASON
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OtzbvUu3pEc
(TDE’s newest signing has a very bright future ahead. After making an impression on the Black Panther Soundtrack earlier this year, Reason proved he can easily carry a solo track with “The Soul”.)
9. “Brooklynn Love” - PR Dean feat. Marz Money, Rome Streetz & Estee Nack
https://soundcloud.com/hardtimesrecords/pr-dean-feat-marz-money-rome-streetz-estee-nack-brooklynn-love
(What’s more timeless than a straight up underground posse cut? Rome Streetz and Estee Nack remain two of the dopest MC’s in the biz today.)
10. “Black Balloons” - Denzel Curry
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSnkPxDjQSY
(For anyone that still believes today’s mainstream rappers are all mumble with no substance, you really need to give Denzel Curry’s TA13OO a chance. The Carol City rising star knows how to balance his work to appease both the lyrical substance mavens, as well as the kids that just want something to bounce to, and this joint is a quintessential example of Curry’s increasingly high ceiling.)

A Feud to Carry Vol. 2, 2.12.24 “Lessons of the Third Degree”
Youth, unfettered by worries Full of gusto and unearned confidence To the field of battle you go To the field, you’ll fall, of woe Yes, you are trained Pained as I am to admit You will struggle and fall No matter my shouts or my call Should you return from this chore This foolhardy errand of proof What lesson is to be learned Not from teachers that you’ve spurned Broken crown and name as black as your eyes As your belt, bearing the brunt of each welt Do you wish to be a star? Grasping at aspirations near and far? The folly of youth, follow thy father The world is yours to venture into Let me pack your lunch and wrap your hands So that I may trust you’ll overcome when things stray from plans

A Feud to Carry Vol. 2, 2.9.24 "Sweet Teenage Tunes”
I sliced my heart upon a mandolin In your suburban townhome kitchenette When you tugged on its strings like a marionette What phantoms lay lurking should you deign to win? A twisted feeling, as winding as our suburban roads Gnarled and filled with dead ends make you sick Warm as the blood that you spilled in swift limerick Passing me by in the nights, in liminal limerence, fate goads Chorus chords that cut like blades of ice Swiftly played as mandolin, oh, mandolin tunes Parting leaves from trees from limbs from hands from you soon, is– The evenings alone with thoughts of you will have to suffice How can I move, beating my chest, without a heart Loosing blood like arrows, directionless Surfeit to say, now, affectionless Hollow songs in valentine holes restart That boy lays buried in your yard, beneath the giant oak Littered across loved fields and gardens well and less tended As childhood, youth, and love has ended Within my age, with knowledge may I soak Scarlett flowers look over your cooking still Potted and planted with fondness, reflecting – your window sill
