for this one, i just hit shuffle-play on my “Life Influences” playlist which has artists like Catfish and the Bottlemen, COIN, HUNNY, Hippo Campus, All Time Low, etc etc. on it. The song we’re using today is.... “I Love You So” by The Walters
doyoung x reader even though he doesn’t actually show up in this, past taeyong x reader, mark and johnny our fave besties, angst with no happy ending, this really ended up being more a (platonic) mark scenario too which is why i tagged it along w/dy, 2.1k
76 Kisses Masterlist~
Walking back to your apartment after a long shift wasn’t unusual. He always said he’d pick you up, and about half the time he did. But more often than not, he was pulled away or distracted by something else. You let out a sigh, tilting your head up slightly to take in the dark gray clouds above you. You could feel in your bones that a thunderstorm was about to roll in. Granted, the meteorologist said as much during the weather segment on your local news channel. But, you’d prefer to think that your bones hold some ancient, divining power and you aren’t just experiencing the effects of atmospheric pressure changes. It’s something to keep you somewhat distracted from the hollow disappointment that you were feeling.
You kick a rock, watching as it skitters a few paces ahead of you. People pass by you, as preoccupied with their own lives as you are with yours, and pay no notice. You catch up to it, and kick it again, just to have something to do. You were lucky that it hadn’t started raining yet. That would definitely put a damper on your already subdued mood. You feel your phone vibrate in your pocket, and you pull it out to see that your friend was calling you.
“Yo,” Mark says when you pick up, “how was work?”
“Work was fine,” you say, your tone falling flat. You step off to the side, next to a lamppost, to take your call. “Pretty much the same as it always is.”
“Ah, dude, that sucks,” Mark says sympathetically. You like Mark. He was very good at making you feel less shitty because of his very golden retriever constitution. “You okay?”
You hesitate, the standard “I’m fine” not being able to pass your lips. “He didn’t pick me up. Again.” Your words come out choppy.
“Do you need me to come get you,” he asks immediately. You can hear the sound of his old, wood-framed couch creaking as he sits up.
A small smile breaks across your face, touched at how Mark didn’t even have to think about it. But the smile, as soon as it’s there, it’s gone. “Nah… I’m walking back. It’s not raining yet, so it’s fine.”
Mark hums an affirmative. “If you’re sure.”
“I am,” you say. You take another look at the sky and step into the stream of people. It’s better to keep moving to be as close to your apartment as you can before the rain starts. You want to talk to Mark, tell him what’s been bugging you this whole day, but you can’t find the words. He seems to get it, and stays quiet on the other side of the line, waiting for you to get your thoughts worded out right.
“It’s just,” you start, taking a sharp inhale. “It’s just that he always does this, you know? He goes on and on about how he’s sorry for forgetting and that he’ll definitely get me next time, and then I’m left walking back. Or catching a ride with you, which is unfair to both of us.” You pause, waiting to see if Mark is going to comment. When he doesn’t, you continue.
“Like, in everything else about our relationship, he’s perfect! Or, well, most everything else, I suppose. Doyoung is good at planning and organizing a calendar. Which is something I needed after my breakup with Taeyong. Doyoung’s structured lifestyle gave me an anchor to hold onto when I felt like I was just floating aimlessly through it, you know?”
“I remember,” Mark says. He sounds sad, and you know he’s thinking about all the times he would crash at your previous apartment just so that he knew you were eating more than Ben and Jerry’s.
You come to a stop with a small group of people at a crosswalk, the light having just turned to a ‘DON’T CROSS’ right as you got there. You shift your phone to your other ear. “He was good for me, I think. At least, he was in the beginning? You helped me, so much, but he did, too.” ‘CROSS’ appears, and you hear the steady chirping sound for the visually impaired start up. “He got me out of that selfish-”
“Not selfish,” Mark interrupts. You two have had this talk many times. He maintains that you weren’t being selfish by taking care of yourself after your breakup. You think that the way you were able to call off work for a week was selfish; in a lot of industries, you wouldn’t be able to. It helps that your boss was also one of your best friends. And that the two of you sort of worked for yourselves. Johnny had come up with the bespoke fashion, but you were in charge of sourcing material. Luckily, the week that Taeyong broke up with you, you and Johnny were up to your eyeballs in tulle and crinoline for a wedding dress. The dress had been the only project that you were working on for that month, so a week off wasn’t going to do too much damage to Johnny. He was probably the better person for the bride to speak to anyway.
“He got me out of that slump I was in,” you correct yourself, leaving the crosswalk behind you. “And for a while, it was good between us. Doyoung was what I wanted, what I needed, in a partner at the time. And I was surprised at how well we clicked!”
“Not as surprised as me and Johnny when you told us you were moving in with him just two months into your relationship,” Mark says.
“That’s fair,” you say, “I did kind of just… spring it on you guys.” You sidestep a pair of moms with one of those strollers for twins. “But I’m thinking I’m going to start packing up my shit when I get back to my apartment.”
“Oh?” Mark sounds shocked. “Seriously?”
“Yeah,” you say, suddenly tired. “It’s just that, like, recently he’s never not just present with me? I guess? He always seems like he’s on the phone with someone else, and I don’t think a Valerie or Jolene work in his office. I’m almost ninety percent certain that those are two of his exes.”
“What makes you say that?”
You think about it for a few seconds, recalling the look on his face, in his eyes, when you asked who he was talking to. You were never accusatory when you asked, but the way he reacted told you everything you needed to know. “He always looked like a startled rabbit when I asked.”
“Fair play,” Mark agrees.
“But also,” you say, going back to the previous topic, “I know what it feels like when it’s time to go. Someone always leaves first, you know? I guess this time it’s me.”
“Do you,” Mark starts, then cuts himself off. “Are you going to be able to pack your things and leave him behind before he gets back from work tonight?”
You wave away his worried question, forgetting for a minute he can’t actually see you. “It’s chill. He’s leaving for the weekend on some business trip.”
“Business trip or business trip?” You know him well enough to know he was waggling his eyebrows at the question. It cheered you up slightly, knowing that he could tell you were alright enough for him to make that joke. As soon as you decided you were going to pack your things up, you were already one foot out of the door in your relationship.
“Honestly? I’m not totally positive,” you reply. You let out a small, frustrated groan at being stalled by a crosswalk sign again. “But like I said, it’s chill. He’s supposed to be coming back tonight and leave in the morning. And with the way he is, everything he’s bringing with him except his toothbrush and stuff are already packed. He’s not going to be looking through the drawers and closet for any clothes. I’m probably not even going to start with clothes anyways. Those will be the easiest, so I can leave them to be last.”
“You want help,” Mark offers. “John and I can swing by tomorrow. We could probably get you all packed up and out of there before Saturday night even begins if Doyoung’s leaving early.”
“His flight is at seven, I think,” you say. “Thank you.” You ignore the lump in your throat forming from the care your friends have for you. Especially with this being the second most messy breakup you’ve had that they’ve helped you through.
A comfortable silence falls between the two of you as you continue your walk home. It isn’t an incredibly long walk, but twenty minutes is twenty minutes, you know? It’s nice that it’s rather cool out because of the waiting storm.
You break the silence again. “Sometimes, you know, I feel so… so dumb for getting into this kind of mess. Like, it feels like I have a flashing, neon sign pointing at me that says “Hi! Look at me! World’s Best 21st Century Fool for Your Entertainment Right Here!” I shouldn’t be getting into these messes constantly.”
Mark scoffs. “First of all, you do have that sign pointing at you, but not because of your relationship history. It’s because you almost twisted your ankle, even though you were literally just standing still. Secondly, it’s not your fault that Doyoung has been cruel to you.”
You interrupt Mark quickly. “He hasn’t been cruel!” You defend Doyoung.
“What do you call blatantly talking with one’s exes in front of their current partner with no remorse, then?” Mark fires back just as fast.
“… shut up.”
“Listen, YN,” Mark says, tone suddenly serious again. You break off from the crowd again, leaning up on the brick wall of some hotel or restaurant or office building. With a measured voice, he says, “You are not beholden to the decisions he makes for himself. You have so many possibilities ahead of you, with or without him. And you have friends that care about you and want to help. What he chooses to do in this relationship, the ways he disrespects you, are not a reflection on who you are as a person. They’re a reflection of him. You don’t have to put up with this just because you love him. If someone truly, actually loves you, they wouldn’t put you through this shit.”
You sniff, holding back the tears that started sometime during his speech. “Mark Lee, when did you get so worldly,” you joke. Both of you ignore how watery your voice sounds.
As if sensing you needed one last push for a proper emotional breakthrough, he says haughtily, “I feel like the possibility of all those possibilities of being possible is just another possibility that can possibly happen.”
You snort, and the dam breaks. “Shut up, oh my god,” you say through the mix of laughter and tears. “I’m banning you and Johnny from hanging out together.”
“You can’t do that!” Mark protests, and you can hear the relief and smile in his voice.
“I can and I will!” You drag the end of your jacket against your jeans to create a little sweater paw, so you can wipe your face. “You’ve been banned! No more Johnny for you!”
You and Mark joke around like that for those remaining last minutes of your walk to your apartment. You step out of the elevator and walk up to your apartment. The bright lemons on the welcome mat feel like such a juxtaposition to what will come to pass in the morning. “Hey,” you say, fishing your keys out of your pocket and unlocking the door, “thanks for this.”
Mark’s voice softens. “You know I always have your back, YN. Me and Johnny both do.” There’s the sound of a door opening and plastic bags rustling faintly from the other side of the line. “I gotta go. Renjun just got back with today’s dinner. I gotta get my share before the others swarm like locusts. John and I will see you in the morning! Bye, YN, love you!” Mark says. He waits just long enough for you to reply, “Love you, too, Markily. See you soon!” before he hangs up.
You kick off your sneakers, and walk into the kitchen. You pull out your favorite mug from the cabinet next to the fridge and start making hot chocolate. After adding cinnamon, marshmallows, and some whipped cream, you go to the living room and affix yourself to the corner of the couch. As soon as you get comfortable, pillows in the right spots and blanket laying nicely over you, the storm starts. You watch the rain patter against the window as you sip your drink, feeling more settled than you had that morning.

Cupid - Hanzo
notes: (reader and Hanzo are in an implied relationship <3) happy valentine's day folks!! i figured that i'd write a cupid hanzo fic because well... he needed it. i hope you all have an amazing day and get all your favorite gifts!!! <333

You sighed and slumped down on the couch. Even on Valentine's day, Soldier 76 had you working your ass off. You knew you were needed, especially considering that a lot of the heroes were either taking the day off, or doing other Overwatch things, but damn, you didn't want to have to fight this much.
You finally got at least a minute of break time though, which was good enough for you. There was nothing like the air conditioned air of the Overwatch HQ. Especially with you covered in sweat. Speaking of, you felt gross and wanted all of this smelly sweat off of you. You hoped that Soldier would let you take a bit of a longer break this time so you could take a shower. You ran to your room and scooped up some clean clothes and a couple towels. You started to run to the bathroom, but almost crashed into someone on the way out.
You apologized, but snorted when you saw who it was. "Hanzo," you burst out into uncontrollable laughter when you saw what he was in. "What the hell are you wearing?!" You laughed so hard that you were completely out of breath, falling to the ground.
Hanzo groaned and tightened his fluffy ponytail. "Nothing. I'm just... excuse me." Hanzo's face went bright red as he tried to push past you, but you weren't going to let him go that easy.
"Oh, no you don't, mister." You grabbed the back of his tunic and turned him around to face you. It took everything in you to not just burst out into laughter.
Your eyes trailed over Hanzo, noticing that his nails were painted a light, barely noticeable, shade of pink. He was wearing a short tunic that showed a small pair of black shorts, showing off his thighs that were covered in strappy boots with wings on them. You smiled and tucked a thick piece of curled hair behind his ear.
"Are those... wings?" You turned him around and not only noticed two small pink wings on his back, but that his arrows had hearts on them too. And god it took everything in your power not to topple over in laughter once you saw that bright pink belt.
"Jesus Christ, Hanzo, what is this?!"
"Look!" Hanzo's face was pinker than the roses on his new tattoo on his arm that replaced the dragon one. "It's for an ad, okay?! I was hired to do some ad dressed as Cupid and they offered a lot of money. Like a lot. I couldn't say no."
You crossed your arms and gave him one more lookover. "You looks stupid..."
"Thanks," Hanzo said sarcastically, blowing the annoying piece of hair out of his eyes.
"You didn't let me finish," you said, putting your index finger over his lips. "You look stupid, but you look adorable. I'd let you shoot me in the heart any day."
"Shut up."
You laughed. "What kind of ad?"
"Shut up!" Hanzo went to run off, his little wings bouncing.
"What kind of ad?!?!" You ran after him and he turned to you and you just noticed that he was wearing a tinted lip balm that turned his lips both shiny and dark red.
"A perfume ad, okay?!"
"So do I get to see Cupid Hanzo everywhere this February?"
"I hate you."
"Sure you do, Hanzo." You pressed a kiss onto his cheek and cupped his face in your hands. "Have fun filming that ad, okay?"
"Whatever." He grumbled, pulling you into his arms for a hug.
"I wouldn't go to a perfume ad filming after hugging me. I smell like sweat."
"I don't care." He pressed a kiss onto your forehead and ran off, knowing for a fact that you would snap pictures if he wasn't fast enough.
He knew you so well.

My second piece for @cruelsummer-ficfest!! This is honestly one of my favourite pieces I've ever written, so I hope you enjoy!

James
James Potter had been declaring his love for Lily Evans since he was eleven years old. He saw her in the train and just knew – he could annoy that girl forever. That’s how it started, at least. For the first three years he was like a younger sibling, trying to find the right button to press to get a huff.
Then he turned fourteen and suddenly, it wasn’t as funny when she rolled her eyes at his every action and refused to talk to him. At fifteen, it hurt when she tore his Valentine’s card in half without even looking at it.
At sixteen he realised he needed to grow up and decided to leave her alone. The realisation came with his best friend, arriving halfway through the summer of ’76 with a wand and a few bruises, begging for somewhere to stay that wasn’t overrun with Death Eaters. They all needed to grow up, act like the adults they nearly were, and start preparing for war.
An unintentional consequence of all this was his growing friendship with Lily. They sat together in Potions and by the start of Christmas break, she was laughing at his jokes and agreeing to study together in their free periods. By the end of the year, she sought him out at mealtimes and sat with him and the marauders in the common room. He heard from her first when he became Head Boy, her owl arriving seconds after he sent his to congratulate her.
They started dating in October ’77. Night patrols around the castle became a time for them to talk about the war, about exams, about her sister and his adopted brother. She kissed him first. He knew he liked her, had for ages, but hadn’t wanted to ruin the friendship he’d just gotten. She didn’t care. Life is too short, she said, not to take a chance.
He liked her. He knew this. Even his eleven year old self had known that, somewhere deep down. The extent of it didn’t hit him until the end of the year.
Exams had finally ended for the seventh years. In a few days, they’d be graduating and leaving Hogwarts forever. They hadn’t had time to be excited yet, to be happy. NEWTs had been gruelling, and they were all exhausted.
James walked in from his last patrol to find Lily asleep on the sofa in the common room. There were two mugs of hot chocolate on the table across from her, kept steaming warm with a charm. He walked over to her and crouched in front of her face, brushing her hair out of her eyes to wake her gently.
“Waited for you,” she slurred.
“You didn’t have to,” he responded in a whisper. “You could’ve gone to bed.”
She sat up slowly, stretching her back and rubbing her eyes.
“Don’t wanna go to bed,” she groaned. “I wanna be with you. Let’s go for a walk.”
“It’s the middle of the night,” he replied. “McGonagall will have our heads.”
“What’s she going to do? Expel us? There’s three days left before we graduate.”
He chuckled and stood up, pulling her up with him. She grinned and picked up both mugs, handing one to James. He took a sip before grabbing her hand and walking them to the portrait hole.
They wandered down to the lake, chatting about old memories in whispers and pointing out constellations once they got outside. After one lap around the lake their drinks were finished, and they decided to head back to the warmth of Gryffindor tower.
Halfway back, Lily ran out of steam and draped herself across James’s back, grumbling about the long way back. Chuckling to himself, he vanished their mugs to free his hands and picked her up. She tucked her face into his neck and gave him a sleepy hum of thanks as he began walking again.
Sometimes before the portrait hole, her breathing evened out. She was fast asleep, her arms around his neck, his arms under her thighs, keeping her secure on his back. He turned his head a pressed a kiss to her forehead and breathing in her citrusy shampoo for a moment.
It hit him in that moment, in the silent corridor as the rest of the school slept: he never wanted this to end. He wanted to annoy her forever, until they were old and grey, and she had smile lines from years of laughing at his antics.
“I’m in love with you, Lily Evans.”

Lily
Lily Evans didn’t even like James Potter when she met him. He was rude and annoying, and he couldn’t sit still. For their first few years at Hogwarts, he seemed to be determined to prove how unlikable he was with his annoying smirk and endless pranks. By their fourth year, she had decided to just ignore him and his annoying friends, only befriending Remus despite Severus’s warnings. Remus, at least, seemed to care about his schoolwork, unlike the rest of the marauders.
Fifth year presented her with a quandary. James, she found, could be quite funny on occasion. He also wasn’t the idiot she always thought he was, figuring out some of their more complex work before anyone else in their class. She still didn’t like him and found his attempts to woo her irritating, but she could see what everyone else could for the first time.
By Christmas of their sixth year, she couldn’t remember what had been so annoying about him in the first place. He had only actually asked her out about three times since first year, each attempt years apart from the last. Everything else she had found so annoying had largely been either a well-intended prank or done in defence in someone more vulnerable. Besides the incident during the OWLs, she couldn’t find anything she truly resented him for, and he had apologised for that day.
In seventh year she kissed him. She couldn’t be just a friend anymore. He was charming and smart, and he listened to her complain about Petunia for hours on end. He was loyal to his friends, loyal to a fault, and seemed to have endless optimism and kindness to give. He was handsome too, in his own way with his messy hair and glasses that made his eyes seem slightly too big. She didn’t want to be friends anymore; she wanted to hold his hand and fall asleep with her head on his chest.
The summer after they graduated, he invited her to stay at his house for a few weeks. His parents had gone to some family event in New Delhi, Sirius had moved out to his apartment with Remus, and James admitted he didn’t want to be alone. She agreed easily and they spent days drifting around the manor and the town of Godric’s Hollow together. She fell asleep every night with his arms around her and woke up every morning to the sun just barely coming through the curtains.
One morning she woke up to an empty bed, his spot still warm. She shivered as she got out of bed, a chill in the air due to the early morning. One of James’s hoodies was abandoned on the floor, so she pulled it over her sleep clothes – an old t-shirt she had also stolen from him, and some scruffy pyjama shorts she’d had since he was thirteen. She was practically drowning in the worn fabric, the sleeves only just revealing her fingertips, but it was warm and smelt like James, so she was happy.
She made her way downstairs to find James. He was in the kitchen, preparing breakfast and coffee for the two of him. His hair was even messier than usual, and he didn’t have his glasses or a shirt on, just a pair of flannel pyjama pants riding low on his hips. She leaned on the doorway, watching as he pulled two charred slices of toast out of the toast with his fingertips, shaking his hands out and swearing the second they landed on the plates. She let out a small laugh and he looked up, a smile making its way onto his lips and his eyes lighting up as he saw her.
“Are you laughing at me?” he asked in lieu of a greeting.
“Just a little,” she admitted. “That toast is burnt.”
He huffed out a laugh and pointed over at the kettle, where two steaming mugs were waiting.
“I may not be a great cook,” he said. “But I make a mean cup of coffee. That much I can guarantee.”
She laughed a little and moved from her position in the doorway to drape her arms around his neck. His hands instinctually moved to her hips as she pressed up against his chest. She tilted her head up for a good morning kiss, not caring about morning breath or chapped lips.
“I’m in love with you, James Potter,” she whispered against his lips.
“Because I make good coffee?” he asked with a smirk.
“Just shut up and kiss me.”
His hands moved to her back, pulling her impossibly closer as they kissed.
“I’ve been in love with you forever, Lily Evans.”

“Have you ever noticed…” After two alcohol-infused milkshakes, those were dangerous words. “… how so many rom-coms about getting married make it seem like getting married is a terrible idea.”
Corinne tucked both feet up beneath herself on the couch and accepted the box of chocolates Tabby offered while making her broad statement. Valentine's Day was many weeks past but evidence of affection from a certain man lingered. Skimming over the guide and the remaining confection, Cory matched up a picture promising one smooth, dark truffle made of 76% fair-trade cocoa and Scotch ganache fillings. The first bite was sumptuous, like a breath stealing kiss spun from sugar and smoke.
Tabby was content ripping open a bag of neon-pink M&Ms and tipping them straight into her mouth. “I mean it. Made of Honor, wedding gets called off. The Wedding Planner, more like the wedding destroyer. 27 Dresses, engagement canceled along with one ruined antique dress. And Runaway Bride!” Still clutching the candy bag in one hand, Tabby tried to count with her free set of fingers. “Like, so many jilted grooms.”
Reaching for her own boozy milkshake, Corinne took a small sip, finding it paired nicely with her recent chocolate sample. As a bonus, it helped conceal the amusement at her friend’s somewhat passionate deconstruction of romantic classics from the early turn of the millennium. “Maybe it’s just Hollywood’s way of telling us not to say yes to a ring unless we’re absolutely certain.”
The scrunch of Tabby’s nose indicated a certain amount of agreement. She settled into her seat, sliding over the remote to Corinne and proceeding to toss M&Ms into her own mouth, before casually asking, “So, what would you say if he asked you now.”
There was no malice to the question, and Cory was long used to her best friend letting loose whatever random thought she had. Some things, however, were only meant for two people to know.
She clicked on the TV and shared a Mona Lisa smile. “I guess we’ll just have to wait to find out.”

34. Returned From the Dead Kiss
Another one for the 76 Kisses challenge! Just like what accidentally happened in the doyoung x reader/reader x mark (platonic) one, I forgot to put a kiss in. Though, I don’t personally see this as an issue for this one.
gn!reader x jaehyun x haechan (platonic? love triangle? whose to say), supernatural exists au, necromancy, comes back and something’s wrong but not in the typical way, 737 words (i so want to make a sequel akdljfs maybe even find a way to connect it to my reader x seokmin magic au lol)
“… Well, this is awkward,” you say, digging the toe of your sneakers into the cracked dirt beneath you. You were surrounded by the pale halo of dry grass. It had to be at least a ten-foot radius, minimum. At least the full moon was nice, no clouds to block the light.
“This is also your fault,” the ghost snarks back at you. “You were supposed to kiss and make up, not kiss and wake up! Now look at me! I’m translucent. Practically see-through!”
“I hate to be that person,” says the corpse sitting against his headstone dryly, “but “translucent” is “see-through”. Which, well, you are.”
“Thank you for your insights, Jaehyun,” you say politely. He smiles back at you, the necromantic magick giving him the same boyish charm in death that he had in life. A few green lights twinkled in and out of sight around him. Proof of your magick working.
“No, Haechan, I’m not ignoring you at all! I’m definitely apologizing for turning you into a ghost,” Haechan mocks before his frustration seeps through again at the end. “I didn’t mean to warp your energy and transform you from a respectable and honored vǫrðr to some pathetic apparition.”
You suppress the urge to roll your eyes at his dramatics. He deserved to be dramatic about this. You’d be upset, too, if someone performed magick that took away your necromantic ability and gave you wind magick or something. Jaehyun, however, has no such need to hide anything. This misstep in your casting allowed him to come back with more vigor than he would have otherwise.
“I am sorry, Haechan,” you say, frowning at him. “I didn’t realize that you were touching the grass when I cast. I guess that little connection was all it took.” You make a series of movements with your hands, looking almost like you were typing in midair. Haechan glows green for a moment, the same kind of green surrounding Jaehyun, before it fades away again. His gray-blue aura makes him look more like some faded painting of a hero from a romance novel than a ghost, but you figure now isn’t the right time to say anything. There was something… off, about this. You know this spell like the back of your hand. That little connection wouldn’t have really done anything except maybe make him feel a bit wrung out.
“That better have told you how to fix me,” he threatens.
“Nah,” Jaehyun says from the ground, tilting his head back to look at Haechan properly. “I like you better like this. You’re more entertaining.” When Haechan tries to kick his leg and goes through it, Jaehyun says, “See? Imagine if you were still vǫrðr! You would’ve actually hit me, and that would be boring.”
“Is it possible to kill a corpse? That seems like something that could happen.”
Now you roll your eyes at Haechan’s dramatics. You nudge the end of Jaehyun’s dress shoe with your beat up sneakers, mind working out what could have gone wrong. “Stop egging him on.”
He turns his head to you, dirt falling from his hair to his shoulders with the movement. He has a smirk painting his features, as if he’s about to say something that will amuse you and tick Haechan off at the same time. His smirk disappears when he sees the expression on your face. “Is everything okay?”
You blink a few times, coming back to conversation. “No, yeah” you say, still sounding distracted, “it’s fine… I think.”
Haechan floats over next to Jaehyun so both of them are facing you, matching looks of concern on their faces. “You think?”
You open your mouth to reply, then close it again with a frustrated sigh. “I know this spell forwards, backwards, and upside down.” The two nod. “Haechan should just feel, at most, exhausted. You,” you look at Jaehyun with your brows furrowed. “You shouldn’t have fragmented necromantic magick floating around you. It should have been absorbed completely by you, or else the spell would have rebounded. Something… Something is wrong.”
Jaehyun and Haechan share a worried look before their eyes come back to you.
You feel a surge of power run through the ground and into you, leaving as fast as it came. It left you dizzy. It left you feeling cold, colder than Death.
“Something is terribly wrong.”

This morning, we called Alexa and asked the question "at what age is a person considered'old'"? Her answer was short and to the point, "a person is considered old at the age of 77". Today, according to Alexa, I became old and we're only old once. Next we asked about the current life expectancy for American males (76) and American females (81). Hmmmm what's going on with that extra five years?
Lynn congratulated me on making it this far considering my habits. Naturally I accepted her compliment with grace and dignity sorta. Lynn's wifely compliments usually contain a thorn and a sting.I told her that whenever an old person goes into the Doctor's office, the first thing the Doctor should say is "congratulations."
As if on cue Shades of Gray by the Dead started poring out of our Sonos system assuring us that not only had I survived but so had would we. Yeah.
Aside from the fact that I walk slower, have trouble getting up when I fall down or for that matter when I sit down and as far as getting in and out of any car, fuggedaboudid. It's an exercise in humiliating, comical, distorted contortionism. I always knock off my hat as part of the sad effort.
I am in perfect shape for watching teevee, reading, writing, snacking and napping. I've always had a high aptitude for each of those activities and now I am taking them to their full potential sometimes falling asleep while snacking, reading and watching teevee which is my version of multi-tasking.
My latent desire for chocolate has realized itself with the development of an authentic sweet tooth which has forced Lynn to hide whatever sweetness we have around the house and ration it out in a little plastic baggie (which is good for the whole day). Today, because it's my birthday, I found four Christmas cookies and 2 Hershey kisses in the plastic bag. At this moment, the bag is down two cookies but both kisses remain. My idea of a balanced diet; two cookies and two kisses. Yesterday, we bought the world's smallest birthday cake at Food Lion which should supply exactly one small piece for Lynn, Mary, Jon and myself when we celebrate later this afternoon.
Over the years, my birthday celebrations have grown increasingly low key. My next big celebration will be when I reach 80. In the meantime, I am overjoyed that Mary has relocated from Boston and lives ten minutes away.
12 years after my birth, my sister Terri was born. Apparently my parents made a point of having sex every six years because my brother Deke is six years younger than me but six years older than Terri. My parents were a little off in their timing with Deke. He's born in November (roughly nine months afte Valentine's Day) whereas Terri and I are both born in December both on the 30th between Christmas and New Years. I was wildly premature and weighed only five pounds.
Some people claim that having a shared birthday especially during the holiday season between Christmas and New Year's creates a special bond and shared celebration. Yeah, right. Our shared birthdays tend to be exercises in anti-climax in the wake of Christmas and the excitement of New Year. Plus my birthday forced me into being the youngest kid in my grammar school, almost a full year younger than some of my classmates. Yeah, thanks a lot.
Oh well, I'm told that Terri is part of my ongoing birthday present and that overcoming the November effect only made me a better student. MMMMKKKKAAAAYYY. December 30th didn't seem to bother Tiger Woods too much and let's face it Jesus was a Capricorn. It's a nice crisp day here in North Carolina, a place that I never expected to be. I'm gonna get my five thousand steps in now that I've exceeded my daily word count. It's great to be alive and I'll never be this young again.
