Plus & Minus just ended and I have to say, there are very few, if any, Taiwanese BLs that I haven’t enjoyed! The most recent, prior to P&M was DNA Says Love You. These series are more understated, more thoughtful, and very fresh, and I would compare them more to Korean BLs than to Thai BLs, (but oftentimes with better sex, or certainly deeper kisses)! Don’t miss them! I, also, appreciate the fact that Taiwan studios don’t force fake relationships onto their actors, or make them do all kinds of appearances together.

Honorable mention, here, to 49 Days With a Merman, which isn’t a true BL, but more like a “Buddy” series.

We know Win can swim and has stamina for this battle. He is loving and patient with both his family and with his partner Team. He is a natural born peacemaker so seeing him physically fighting for something is a bit hard to imagine!

Li Ren Yu comes in with brute force. Have you seen him whip that tail? Fiercely defend his friends? He fights sharks for fun. Don’t believe me? Watch the show! That man is strong and can tussle with the best of em!

Out of the water Ren Yu seems to be at a disadvantage, but he isn't! He took punches to the head and didn't flinch! The only thing that brought this man down was tranquilizers. Also he has the power to save lives by pressing his forehead to theirs. Win, all that, and you just look good buddy!

Let’s be honest we all win with this fight because there will be minimal clothing and water! 😂

I surprised myself by finishing 49 Days With a Merman this weekend! I had kind of dropped it cause I thought I'd be dissatisfied with the ending, but I started it again and here we are.

As a comedy I found it pretty good. I laughed a lot at its silliness. The ending was fine, but I'm still on the fence re: the "bromance".

On the one hand it's kinda nice that a friendship would be acknowledged as a great love and be the crux of the show. Plus, I like the idea that the merman returns to the sea "where he belongs" at the end. Longjie's selfless wish is a beautiful thing.

On the other hand, they're so touchy-feely that you'd be forgiven for thinking they're boyfriends!! And Renyu has no concept of human boundaries. Truly. There's even one particular bath scene that I'm too embarrassed to describe, if you've watched it you know the one...

So I don't know what to think!! It feels like the writer and director couldn't decide how to frame this relationship, so they did it both ways.

I'm thinking maybe it wouldn't be so bad if they had been boyfriends and kissed, and ended it after saving each other as we saw. Like it'd be a lot sadder but, it wouldn't be a bad story.

Either way the chemistry was there! And I did enjoy watching the drama a lot. The merman was handsome, it should be noted. Only thing is, the villains did just get away with it for the most part.

OH THIS IS SUCH AN INTERESTING QUESTION!!!!!!

i actually agree with all the ones you listed and in general i'd say i would love to see more plotty shows with grown up characters. we're definitely getting more variety these days, but i really want both BLs and GLs to keep branching out and trying new things (though i do think GLs should be allowed to give us all the highschool and office setting shows they want since we're only just now starting to get some consistent content for the genre). anyway here are some ultra specific shows i would love to see one day!!!!!

(just as a quick note, when i put BL/GL is because i'd like to get that show for both of them)

heist BL. GMMTV made this spot for the LOL fan fest and i've been obsessed with the idea ever since. except you know.... love all these dudes but i actually want women in the cast too. just give me a dozen random characters with weirdly specific abilities coming together to pull off the heist of the century and ending up becoming one big found family with multiple queer pairings!!!!

police procedural BL/GL. you know all those crime shows where the main characters are often two dudes who at first deeply dislike each other so of course they get paired up together and by working together they eventually build an 'epic bromance' (god i hate that term)? YEAH SO WHERE IS THE SHOW WHERE THEY ACTUALLY SMOOCH IT'S ABOUT TIME THAT HAPPENS ME THINK.

revenge plot GL. i don't really have a specific story in mind, i just think female characters should be allowed to commit some crimes, especially if said crimes are carried out against people who wronged them in the past. and while they're busy taking revenge they also find a girlfriend. OR!!!!!! group of girls murders someone and years later it comes to bite them in the ass so they have to cover the thing up and then they all kiss (aka what i wish could have happened in p.s. i hate you).

merman BL. FRANKLY INSANE TO ME THAT THERE'S NO MERMAN BL TO DATE. we could have got this with 49 days with a merman but they didn't make it a BL in the end which is a pity SO YEAH I DEMAND ONE (my dream would be to have forcebook playing this but i'd take anything at this point).

historical BL/GL. i know we're getting a couple of historical BLs this year, but it's so funny to me that both i feel you linger in the air and love upon a time are gonna be about a character from the future traveling back in time. i mean, don't get me wrong, time travel is one of my weaknesses, but also i'd just like an historical show where BOTH characters are from the same time period.

BL/GL with a teacher who doesn't get paired up with a student. sadly this is one of my limits: i don't really get the appeal of teacher/student, especially when we could have teacher/single parent (I NEED IT SO BADLY) or even teacher/teacher (i personally think it would be really interesting to get a university BL/GL but from the point of view of the teachers).

BL/GL exploring other sexualities and gender identities. pretty self explanatory, like you said just give me ace main characters, trans main characters, non-binary main characters, ALL THE DIFFERENT QUEER MAIN CHARACTERS!!!!!!!

I’ve just discovered Taiwanese BL and currently on Hisstory4:close to you (I’ve not watched them in any particular order, honestly I saw a TikTok and it was a top of my list)

And hence to say, I AM LOVING IT! I’ve just spat my drink out from this line alone!

So my ask, Taiwan BLs? Are they as emotional with their colour? I’ve honestly not been paying attention to it as much so WISE COLOUR MASTER PLEASE ADVISE YOUR WISDOM! Many thanks from a lady who is now slightly obsessed with Charles Tu 🙃

Anon, you cannot open a gate that was never closed.

I am very vocal about my love for HIStory 4: Close to You. It's at the top of my favorites list (9/10), and it's my favorite HIStory, beating out Trapped and Crossing the Line. I make no excuses for any part of it because I liked every part of it.

But mainly, like you, I loved Li Cheng played by Charles Tu.

Honestly, Taiwan has never served a bad-looking or bad-acting lead, which is one of the many reasons I prefer Taiwanese BLs above all others, so Charles Tu sits in good company.

Yet one of the reason I'm also a little disappointed watching Taiwanese BLs is because they are sparse on color-coding. We Best Love had the most obvious color-coding.

And Oh No! Here Comes Trouble, which is not a BL but it's not hetero either, had some subtle color-coding.

49 Days with a Merman colored the merman with blue since he came from the water, while the lead was in greens, browns, and oranges since he was of the land (but this plot was all over the place).

I don't watch non-queer or non-queer coded shows, so I have no idea if color-coding isn't a norm in Taiwanese media, but I'm hoping that one of this year's BLs will give me colors.

But first, Taiwan has to release a BL this year.

It's been too long without a Taiwanese BL. Five months. One-hundred and forty-eight days.

I miss them.

48. OC who is a perfect cinnamon roll, too good for this world, too pure

Yessssss so that would definitely by my OC Valia Drystand. She is Tech's love interest in my series "Technically, We're In Love". Valia is bubbly, happy, always tries to lighten the mood with a joke or two, especially when she's scared. She's been a prisoner of her uncle for over 10 years so she hasn't experienced the galaxy much, and is kind of like Omega in that realm. She's innocent and sweet and wants to make the world better. She can be a little cocky because she's just as smart and brainy as Tech and she knows it ;D but genuinely tries to do things to help people. But that won't stop her from using phrases like "I told you so" or "I thought it was obvious" ;D

A close follow up would be Zephyr (from The World Where You Live). Since the story isn't released and I don't have a whole lot of her fleshed out yet, I don't have a whole lot to say other than she is suppose to be your precious cinnamon roll who will throw herself in harms way to protect those she cares about and even those she doesn't know (*coughs, how she meets the merman in the first place* *hacks, yeah, Hunter is a merman in this one)

49. Which one of your OCs would most likely enjoy memes

I would say Ryn/Serena! (she's a medic from my story Shelter From the Storm) She has a fun and bubbly personality and likes a good joke. She's always playing around with Wrecker and Tech and makes it her personal mission to make Crosshair smile once a day. Of course she has to tease Hunter whether or not they're on good terms XD She is a serious person who doesn't want to drag the mood down with how serious something is. "there's always a way out" is her mentality and if humor is the road, the better! But I can see her sitting up late at night laughing with the others or just spamming the others on Pinterest like I do to my siblings.
