In a world of shapeshifters, you're a static, someone who will never be able to shift.

Hob can't shift. He can hide it pretty well by now, especially by being one of the first to strike whenever there's a fight, before the other can change. He learned to hide it and lie, telling that he can change in a bear, making people wary of him changing because bears usually are unmanageable.

Dream knows it. Of course he knows it because he IS the Lord Shaper after all and would recognize a static anywhere for the fact that they usually are not a linked with him such as the others. But Hob is such a dreamer he makes it up in determination.

The timeline is the same that canon. Dream still get trapped, but when he gets out... he lost his ability to shift. He spent so much time in one form that he can't change it anymore. Even if he managed to escape from the basement, he feels like Burgess still got him trapped in his prison of glass.

Of course Hob immediately knows, because only statics moves like this. Like they are string puppets against the fluidity of the shifters. And Dream moved like that before... like he was a panther hidden in a human skin. Now gone is the panther but Hob would do anything to get them back.

OHH I like it! I really like the idea that some people can just never shift, but there are also people who lose the ability to do it through traumatic circumstances. Being unable to shift is still frowned upon, even for those people. Hob has always tried to befriend people like that, because he knows what it's like.

When they reunite, Hob is desperate to help Dream adjust to his new reality. Hob even tells Dream that he's always been a static (he's never been quite sure if Dream knew or not). He explains that he's learned to live with being different, but that doesn't mean it's not difficult. He talks about how he sometimes dreams of being able to shift, and he always treasures those moments.

Dream is silently crying, and he wants to be angry and tell Hob that it's not the same. He's supposed to be "Lord Shaper", its completely different to Hob’s situation. But then it occurs to Dream that his ability to shift might come back - there's at least a chance. And Hob will never have that chance. No matter how long he lives.

And so he doesn't get angry. He leans a bit closer to Hob and accepts a gentle squeeze to his hand. Maybe it would be a good idea to join Hob in his dreams, and the two of them can run together. Panther and bear, or whatever animal Hob wants. Maybe it would be good to remind himself that he truly is free, although a part of him will always linger in that basement.

Maybe he'll come to Hob in the waking world too. To remind himself that someone really does understand, someone who will wait for as long as it takes for Dream to come back to him. Maybe if he's with Hob... a shadow of the panther will come back to him.

They've got nothing but time.

AHHH Dream would be the cutest blanket burrito... and he would also be absolutely susceptible to tickling. Unfortunately, Hob is a master tickler!!

Poor Dream is swiftly disentangled from his safe blanket nest as he flails wildly on the bed. Hob’s fingers seem to be EVERYWHERE. His ribs, his belly, his armpits, his feet - nothing is safe! And Dream does fight back, and his fingers are actually perfect for tickling, but then Hob ups the stakes!! And blows a raspberry on Dream’s tummy!! Oh the humiliation!!

In fairness Dream is no longer cold, and the raspberry did turn into a series of kisses peppered all the way up to his mouth. Hob seems to have entirely forgotten about the tickling as he pulls Dream in and ravishes his mouth. But Dream hasn't forgotten...

...and while Hob is utterly off his guard, Dream’s long thin fingers scrabble right into his armpits. Hob flails and falls off the bed, and pulls Dream right along with him! The tickle war recommences and Hob is reminded of some very sage advice - don't start something you can't finish!

(It's entirely worth it to kiss the terrible honking laughter right out of Dream’s gorgeous mouth.)
