So who was going to tell me about this Hindi memory hack that is apparently taught to children to help them remember which hand is left and which is right: form circles with your thumb and forefinger. The hand that looks like the letter b for बायाँ is left, and the one that looks like the letter d for दायाँ is right. Brilliant!

Breaking up with a language #langtwt

I'm not actively studying Hindi anymore. At the moment I don't have any interest in it whatsoever but I can't guarantee that I won't get back into it at any point. During the time I actively learnt Hindi I got pretty comfortable reading the Devanagari script, which was the reason I got into Hindi in the first place, since Hindi was the first language that crossed my mind when thinking of languages written in Devanagari. If I should ever go back into Hindi I'll practice to handwrite Devanagari. Could I do that regardless? Yes, absoloutely but I know myself and I won't have the motivation to do so, if I'm not benefitting from it in the moment.

आवाज़ें

वह जब भी मेरे पास आता था, उसकी एक ही तकलीफ रहती थी। वो मुझसे बार-बार यही कहता था कि डॉक्टर साहब कुछ भी करके ये शोर कम कर दीजिए। मैंने उसे कुछ दवाइयाँ भी दी थी लेकिन लगता है उसने वही किया जिसके लिए मैंने उसे सख्त मना किया था।

राहुल मेरे पास पहली बार तब आया था जब उसका स्कूल खत्म हुआ था और कॉलेज शुरू होने ही वाला था। पहले उसकी तकलीफें कम और शिकायतें ज्यादा थी। जब देखो कहता कान मे दर्द हो रहा है, उसने बताया था कि कोई व्यक्ति अजीब सी वेश भूषा मे उसके सामने आया और भीख मांगते-मांगते कान मे फूँक मारकर चल गया। मुझे ये बात बड़ी अटपटी सी लगी। उसकी माँ तो मानो तुरंत समझ गईं थी कि मेरे लड़के पर किसी ने टोटका कर दिया है और अब उसे एक अच्छे पंडित से मिलना चाहिए। मैंने अपने हासिल किये हुए ज्ञान से यही पाया कि राहुल की मानसिक स्थिति बिगड़ रही थी। उसे तरह तरह की आवाज़ें सुनाई देने लगीं थीं, मानो कोई उसे पुकार रहा हो, चिढ़ा रहा हो, गालियां दे रहा हो। वो हर समय परेशान रहने लगा। उसके दोस्त भी उसे पागल कहते और दूर भागते। मैंने उसे सीधी सलाह दी की "राहुल, ये आवाज़ें तुम्हारे दिमाग मे हैं, इन पर ज्यादा ध्यान मत दो और भूल कर भी इनका जवाब बिल्कुल मत देना वरना हालत बिगड़ सकती है"। उसे देखकर ऐसा लगा जैसे उसे मेरी बात समझ मे आ गई हो। लेकिन फिर भी उसने वही किया जिसके लिए मैंने उसे मन किया था, पता नहीं क्यों उसने मेरी बात नहीं मानी।

राहुल के कान का दर्द बढ़ता गया, और अब उसका कॉलेज मे भी ध्यान न लगता। वो जब फिरसे मेरे पास आया तब अपनी माँ और एक पंडित जी को साथ लाया था। पंडित मुझे पैनी आँखों से घूरने लगा और उसकी माँ ने तुरंत मेरे कैबिन के सोफ़े पर उसे लिटा दिया। मेरी असिस्टन्ट उनके पीछे पीछे अंदर आई, उसने मेरी तरफ देखा और मैंने उसे बाहर जाने का इशारा किया। देखने मे लग रहा था कि ये इनका घर है और मैं यहाँ कोई मेहमान हूँ। राहुल की हालत बहुत खराब थी। पंडित ने मुझे नजदीक बुलाया और राहुल का तापमान और दिल की धड़कने मापने को कहा। मैंने अकढ़ मे पहले उन्हे डांटना चाहा लेकिन स्थिति की गंभीरता देखते हुए मैंने कुछ नहीं बोला।

राहुल चिल्लाने लगा। कहता "ये आवाज़ें कहाँ से आ रही हैं! इन्हे रोको!"

बाहर मेरे बाकी मरीज ये तमाशा देखकर लौटने लगे। मुझे लगा मेरी बहुत बदनामी हो रही है। राहुल की माँ ने रोना शुरू कर दिया। पर मैंने साहस जुटा कर उनसे कहा कि ये कोई तरीका नहीं हुआ। आप लोग बाहर जाएँ यहाँ से नहीं तो मैं पुलिस को बुला दूंगा, ये मेरा क्लिनिक है। यहाँ मैं इस तमाशे की इजाजत नहीं दूंगा। बोलते ही मुझे लगा शायद नहीं बोलना चाहिए था। पंडित ने तुरंत अपने हाथों से राहुल को उठाया और कोई मंत्र पढ़ते पढ़ते वहाँ से बाहर चला गया। मैं भी उनके साथ बाहर निकला और अपने बाकी मरीजों के सामने ठेठ मे बोलने लगा "न जाने कहाँ से आ जाते हैं"। मेरे बाकी मरीजों को थोड़ी सी तसल्ली हुई और वे सब वापस या गए। खुसुर फुसुर शुरू हुई और मैंने भी हिस्सा लिया। अब सब ठीक लग रहा था। दिन की दिहाड़ी सुरक्षित थी। मैं वापस अपने काम मे लग गया।

कुछ दिनों बाद मुझे राहुल पार्क मे दिखा, वो अब व्हील चेयर पर था। उसके पीछे एक और आदमी खड़ा था जो शायद उसका भाई था। राहुल मुझे देखकर बहुत खुश हो गया। मैं उसके करीब गया, और जाकर घुटनों पर बैठ गया, बोला तुम्हारी ��ंधविश्वासी माँ ने अगर ठीक तरह से तुम्हारा इलाज कराया होता तो शायद तुम्हें कुछ न हुआ होता।

"लेकिन बीमारी क्या थी?" पीछे खड़े आदमी ने मुसकुराते हुए पूछा। मेरे सामने राहुल का चेहरा लटक गया। मेरे आस पास सब नीला सा हो गया। वो आदमी मेरे पास आया और मेरे कान मे कुछ कहने की बजाय, फूँक मारकर राहुल को अपने साथ ले गया।

मेरी आँखें फिर उसी पार्क मे तीन से चार घंटे बाद खुलीं। एक चौकीदार मुझे अपने पैर से मारकर ये भांप रहा था कि मैं जिंदा हूँ या मर गया। शराबियों के लिए बचाया हुआ ताना उसने मुझपर मार दिया और फिर डांट-डपट कर चला गया। मैं भागता हुआ वहाँ से अपने घर चला गया।

कुछ दिनों बाद मैं अपने क्लिनिक पर ही बैठा कुछ काम कर रहा था। सामने से राहुल अंदर आया, जो अब अपने पैरों पर था। मैं थोड़ा चौंका। मैंने उससे हाल चाल पूछे तो उसने बताया कि अब आवाज़ें नहीं आती हैं। मैंने पार्क मे हुए हादसे के बारे मे पूछने की कोशिश की लेकिन न जाने क्यों मुझे शर्मिंदगी सी हुई। राहुल उठकर जाने लगा और दरवाजे के समीप पहुंचते ही क्षण भर के लिए रुका। अपनी जेब टटोलकर शायद फोन निकालना चाह रहा था। मेरा स्वभाव था कि मैं अक्सर अपने मरीजों को गेट तक छोड़कर आता था लेकिन जब मैंने उठने की कोशिश करी तो देखा कि मेरे पैर एक जगह जम से गए हैं। गर्दन के पीछे एक तेज हवा सुनाई दी। मैंने कुर्सी मोड़ कर पीछे देखा तो पार्क वाला आदमी फटे-फूटे कपड़ों मे खड़ा मुस्कुरा रहा था। देखकर लगा कोई भिकारी है। पीछे से राहुल ने कहा "आवाज़ें तो आएंगी, लेकिन उत्तर मत देना डॉक्टर साहब"। दोबारा पीछे मुड़कर देखा तो राहुल जा चुका था और दरवाजा धीरे धीरे अपनी गति से बंद हो रहा था... ------

एक समय ऐसा भी

I'm currently doing a Hindi course on Duolingo and have come across sentences that contain "होना" as a seperate verb from the "है, हैं etc." that usually ends a sentence. My question is, why not just use the ending of the sentence as the verb since I have also come across sentences that do that?

(I hope it's ok if I ask a question like this, also hope this is understandable)

I don't remember the example sentences used in Duolingo Hindi course by heart anymore (so feel free to comment or send another ask with a specific example sentence if my explanation misses its mark).

Here's what's useful to know about होना in Hindi

होना, to be, to exist, to happen, to occur, can be used in several ways:

1. as a stand-alone, main verb or predicate of the sentence in the indicative simple present or past tense - no other verb in Hindi has this form.

वह लड़की है। - She is a girl.

खाना अच्छा था। - The food was good.

2. as a copula, that helps us construct all the other grammatical aspects in Hindi:

वे गए हैं। - They have gone.

मैं कल शहर जा रही हूँ। - I am going to the city tomorrow.

3. as a conjunctive to mean 'via'

मैं दिल्ली हो कर यहाँ आया। - I came here via Delhi.

4. as a part of a phrasal verb where the first part is most often an adjective or a noun:

बारिश क्यों होता है? - Why does it rain?

वह दुकान सोमवार को बंद होती है। - That shop is closed on Mondays.

The phrasal verbs used here are बारिश होना - to rain and बंद होना - to be closed.

5. in conditional and hypothetical sentences:

अगर मैं अमीर होती, तब भी मैं पढ़ाई करती। - If I were rich, I would still study.

होना can also be used as an infinitive:

1. The infinitive can act as a noun, that can be used as a subject, a direct or an indirect object, or an object of a post position.

मुझे यहाँ होना अच्छा लगता है।- I like being here.

ब्लड शुगर के ज्यादा लो होने से क्या होगा? - What will happen, when blood sugar is too low?

2. The infinitive together with चाहिए/चाहना conveys the meaning of an action that ought to happen or a desire to do or be something.

हमारे जाने से पहले कमरा साफ़ होना चाहिए। - The room should be clean before we leave.

मैं खुश होना चाहता हूँ। - I want to be happy.

3. The verb infinitive together with होना conveys the meaning of an obligation or an expected action:

मेरा YouTube चैनल बंद होना है। - My YouTube channel needs to be closed.

Compare: मुझे जाना है। - I need to go.

4. The verb infinitive + पड़ना conveys the meaning of compelled, necessary actions:

जज को ईमानदार होना पड़ता है। - The judge has to be honest.

Because of the way होना can act both as a predicate and as a copula in one sentence, we can see structures as:

क्या हुआ? / क्या हुआ है? - What happened? / What has happened?

क्या होता है? - What happens?

क्या होना है? - What needs to happen?

कुछ कुछ होता है। - Something happens.

I'm not sure if I answered your question but these are some examples of possible reasons you may see होना in its various forms in various places in Hindi sentences - and it's not always just at the end. Thank you for the ask!
