"Oh my god," James murmured, looking resolutely away from the middle of the room.
But as the bass thudded around them and the party continued, he found it more difficult to do so.
Because Regulus had, for the first time in a long time, gotten absolutely plastered. And now?
He was dancing with Barty on a table.
The two boys moved together so closely that it seemed like they were of one mind, their hips rolling together an their chests touching, matching grins on their faces. Regulus's hair was a little mussed and his shirt was riding up, and he was currently biting his bottom lip, eyes closed, his hands on Barty's waist.
And James was entranced. Because really, who wouldn't be? Regulus looked like some sort of fallen angel, dressed in all black, his beautiful skin tinged pink with drink and exertion as he moved.
But the worst part?
Every once in a while, Regulus glanced over. Looked at James. Threw him a seductive smirk that was so un-Regulus and so tempting that James almost melted to the floor with it.
"So...are you looking over there because you want to slap Crouch or snog Reg?" Remus asked from next to James, snapping him back to reality.
Clearing his throat and looking over to where Barty looked to be thoroughly enjoying himself, James shrugged and chuckled. "Both."

Some nights, James Potter can’t sleep. It’s okay though, because he has Regulus.
He stares at Regulus’ freckles, covering his pale cheeks like stars. Some nights, he can’t resist reaching out and tracing them with his finger tip. Regulus is a pretty heavy sleeper, which is good because he doesn’t like to be woken up. But some nights, like tonight, he does.
‘Potter.’
‘Black.’ James teases.
Regulus grumbles quietly. James loves it.
‘Why are you touching me while I sleep?’
James cringes.
‘Why must you make it sound so perverted?’
‘Because it is.’ Regulus answers with a sigh. He opens his eyes and looks at James. God he's beautiful. His tired eyes make James melt, expectedly. There isn’t much about Regulus that doesn’t make James melt.
He’s enamoured. Completely. Always has been, always will be.
Regulus sleepily places his hand on James' bare chest. His finger traces the little R.A.B an inch under James’ collarbone. Regulus’ own J.F.P sits in the same spot on his own chest.
‘I still can’t believe you made us get muggle tattoos.’ Regulus mumbles, his voice thick with sleep.
‘I did not make you do anything. I told you I showed you mine, you insisted I help you get a matching one.’ James rolls his eyes.
‘Technicalities.’ Regulus closes his eyes again. He drops his hand and shuffles closer to James. He leans his head against James’ chest with a contentful sigh.
James placed his chin on top of Regulus’ head, not before giving his boyfriend’s forehead a quick kiss.
‘Go to sleep with me.’
‘But I don’t want to, I just want to look at you.’
‘James.’
‘Regulus.’
‘Go to sleep with me before I have to go back to my own common room in a couple hours.’
James resists the urge to whine.
‘I wish you could stay here with me forever.’
‘You know I can’t.’
‘Do I?’
Regulus pulls back, he opens his eyes again. He looked up at James sadly, his thumb reaches out to wipe a stray tear away from James' eye.
‘I’m sorry James. I wish it didn’t have to be this way.’
‘What do you mean?’ James whispers, the lines around Regulus becoming more blurry with each moment.
‘I wish everything didn’t have to change. I wish I was strong enough to make the better choice for you.’
‘What are you talking about?’
‘You know what I’m talking about.’
James took Regulus’ wrist, he pressed a soft kiss to it.
‘Look at it, James.’ Regulus looks so incredibly sad. James refuses to comply.
‘James, just because you don’t look doesn’t mean it’s not there.’
‘Regulus please, don’t go. I’m not ready to lose you yet. I need more time.’ James couldn’t hold back the whimper this time.
‘I’m so sorry baby.’ Regulus’ voice cracks, his hand clasped James’ face. He rubs his thumb over his cheek.
‘Come back to me.’ James pleads, he tried to take Regulus’ face into his hands but the moment he touched him, was the moment Regulus began to fade.
‘I’m so sorry baby.’ Regulus disappeared in his hands. His lip quivered.
All that was left was an empty bed, and the Slytherin scarf that once belonged to Regulus peeking out of the corner of the pillowcase. James was left alone with the memory of the boy he once loved and lost.
It’s nights like these James Potter hates not being able to sleep. When not even Lily can save him from the nightmares that await him. When all he can think about is Regulus, and the memory of the mark that took his first love from him.
