ON GHOSTS AND DEMONS: Wei Wuxian's "demonic" cultivation?
There are a few big misconceptions I have repeatedly seen in English-speaking fandom about things that are fundamental to the story of MDZS. One of them is this—
Wei Wuxian is not a demonic cultivator.
To prove this, let's take a deep dive into the original Chinese text of MDZS.
(Adapted from my original gdoc posted on Twitter on May 27, 2022. All translations my own unless otherwise stated.)
Demon vs. ghost
Let's start from the very basics. In addition to orthodox cultivation using spiritual energy and a golden core, there are two other forms of cultivation that are mentioned in the novel:
魔道 (mó dào), or “demon cultivation/path.”
鬼道 (guǐ dào), or “ghost cultivation/path.”
To be clear, 魔 mo "demons" and 鬼 gui "ghosts" (and thus their respective cultivation/paths) are not interchangeable because of the in-universe worldbuilding within MDZS. Using the characters in the term 妖魔鬼怪 "monsters," MXTX created four distinct categories of beings, each of which has a strict definition in the novel. From chapter 4 (jjwxc ch 13):
妖者非人之活物所化; 魔者生人所化; 鬼者死者所化; 怪者非人之死物所化。
Yāo (妖) are transformed from non-human living beings; mó (魔) are transformed from living people; guǐ (鬼) are transformed from the deceased; guài (怪) are transformed from non-human dead beings.
And of course, WWX hoards all the ghost-type pokemon monsters at the Phoenix Mountain tournament, and he only exerts control over corpses, spirits, and the like (aka people who have already died). (As opposed to Xue Yang, who appears to have been actively trying to make 魔 "demons" out of living people with those "living corpses" of his, perhaps.) (And, ironically, in order to avoid showing necromancy / zombies on screen, CQL technically does show WWX practicing demon cultivation because everyone is "supposedly alive" even when they're corpses? Which is, funnily enough, far worse morally in the MDZS universe, lol.)
So, intuitively at least, we know that WWX must be practicing ghost cultivation—now let's look at some concrete examples from the book.
Running the numbers
1) 魔道 (mó dào) means “demon cultivation.” As such, it must use living humans.
魔道 appears one (1) time in the novel.
Yes, once. The only time it appears is in the term 魔道祖师 modao zushi, or the namesake of the novel, in chapter 2. This is a title the general public has given him through rumors:
魏无羡好歹也被人叫了这么多年无上邪尊啦、魔道祖师啦之类的称号，这种一看就知道不是什么好东西的阵法，他自然了如指掌。
Wei Wuxian wasn’t called titles like “The Evil Overlord,” “The Founder of Demon Cultivation,” and so on over the years by others for nothing—he knew these sorts of obviously shady formations like the back of his hand.
2) 鬼道 (guǐ dào) means “ghost cultivation.” As such, it must use dead humans.
鬼道 appears 12 times in the novel.
Here is the first instance that 鬼道 appears, which I believe is the first time Wei Wuxian's method of cultivation is properly introduced. From chapter 3 (jjwxc ch 8):
蓝忘机 […] 对魏无羡修鬼道一事极不认可。
Lan Wangji […] had never approved of the fact that Wei Wuxian practiced ghost cultivation.
Here's another quote from chapter 15 (jjwxc ch 71) for funsies:
蓝忘机看着他，似乎一眼就看出他只是随口敷衍，吸了一口气，道：“魏婴。”
Lan Wangji looked at him as if he saw through his half-hearted bluff. He took in a breath, then said, “Wei Ying.”
他执拗地道：“鬼道损身，损心性。”
He stubbornly continued, “Ghost cultivation harms one’s body, and harms one’s nature.”
3) 邪魔歪道 (xiemowaidao) means heretical path/immoral methods/evil practices/underhanded means/etc—e.g., lying, cheating, stealing, bribery, and so on.
It appears ~24 times in the novel.
I mention this last term because it is often used to refer to Wei Wuxian's cultivation, but as a pejorative. Every instance of 邪魔歪道 is said by or to quote someone looking down upon Wei Wuxian’s cultivation (Jin Zixun, Jin Ling, etc.) and referring to it derogatorily, whereas every instance of 鬼道 guidao/ghost dao is said by someone discussing it neutrally and/or factually (Lan Jingyi, Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian himself, random cultivators at discussion conferences, the narration, etc.). Here is a pertinent example with Jin Ling (derogatory) and Lan Jingyi (neutral) in chapter 9 (jjwxc ch 43):
金凌怒道：“是在谈论薛洋，我说的不对吗？薛洋干了什么？他是个禽兽不如的人渣，魏婴比他更让人恶心！什么叫‘不能一概而论’？这种邪魔歪道留在世上就是祸害，就是该统统都杀光，死光，灭绝！”
“We are discussing Xue Yang,” Jin Ling said angrily. “Am I wrong? What did Xue Yang do? He’s scum that’s lower than a beast, and Wei Ying is even more disgusting than him! What do you mean ‘don’t make sweeping generalizations?’ As long as those practicing this kind of demoniac, heretical path are alive, they’ll continue to bring disaster. We should slaughter all of them, kill all of them, annihilate them once and for all!”
温宁动了动，魏无羡摆手示意他静止。只听蓝景仪也加入了，嚷道：“你发这么大火干什么？思追又没说魏无羡不该杀，他只是说修鬼道的也不一定全都是薛洋这种人，你有必要乱摔东西吗？那个我还没吃呢……”
Wen Ning shuffled around. Wei Wuxian gestured at him to stay still, only to hear Lan Jingyi also cut in loudly, “Why are you getting so riled up? It’s not like Sizhui said Wei Wuxian shouldn’t have been killed. All he said was that people who practice ghost cultivation aren’t necessarily all like Xue Yang. Do you have to go around breaking things? I didn’t even get to eat any of that yet…”
Tl;dr—Wei Wuxian does not 修魔道 practice demon cultivation. When Wei Wuxian’s craft is discussed in a neutral and factual manner, it is referred to as 鬼道 ghost dao.
In fact, Wei Wuxian’s imitators are also referred to explicitly as 鬼道修士 ghost cultivators.
魏无羡早就听说过，这些年来江澄到处抓疑似夺舍重生的鬼道修士，把这些人通通押回莲花坞严刑拷打。
Wei Wuxian had heard a while back that over the past few years, Jiang Cheng had gone around snatching any ghost cultivator suspected of being possessed or reborn, detaining them in Lotus Pier to interrogate them using torture.
So why the confusion?
Of course, there is the matter of the novel's title, which I will get into in a second. But the real issue is a matter of translation.
The idea that WWX uses "demonic cultivation" is a misconception in English-speaking fandom due to issues with the translation of terminology. Of note, EXR actually did translate 鬼道 guidao as "ghostly path" most of the time, though there were at least 3 instances of "demonic" and 1 instance of "dark," especially regarding the first few.
However, this misconception was perpetuated (and arguably worsened) by 7S's official translation, which not only mistranslated additional terms as "demonic cultivation/path" (at least in book 1), but also consistently mistranslated every instance of 鬼道 as "demonic cultivation/path."
So why is this book called 魔道祖师, commonly translated as "Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation?"
One possibility is one posed in Chinese-language meta online, which often cites that WWX himself is a sort of 魔 demon. While this may be true—after all, he can hear the voices of the dead—it doesn't quite explain the fact that the title sets him up to be the 祖师 or "founder."
My take is that this novel is very much concerned with hearsay vs. truth. This is one of the many monikers WWX is given by the public, who collectively view him as evil. (Also of note is that the non-cultivator public is not aware of all the nuances that cultivators learn re: distinctions between the 妖魔鬼怪 monsters.) In the quote from earlier, note that the first title we're given is actually 无上邪尊 “The Evil Overlord,” then 魔道祖师 "The Founder of Demon Cultivation." Like, what can that be other than MXTX telling us, "please take both of these with a HUGE grain of salt, lol."
(And not only the title, but the very first line—"魏无羡死了。" / "Wei Wuxian is dead."—is a lie.)
I think the title is genius, honestly. It intentionally makes readers come into the novel with preconceived notions that Wei Wuxian practices 魔道 demon cultivation and evil techniques—just like the public in the novel. What better way to tell a story warning about the dangers of how easy it is to fall for misinformation and jump to incorrect conclusions?
(Though, in our case, perhaps it worked a little too well.)

霹雳 or Pili is a Taiwanese glove puppet drama that’s been airing since the 1980s and currently there are over a thousand episodes. The plot varies across its many seasons but it’s basically about martial arts, sword fighting and lots of drama between the many many characters of the show. (It's not stop-motion btw, it's filmed live with the puppets)

silly celeb au concept sketches (wing photocard next week <3)
+ i have so many thoughts abt this au guys i need to be sedated (don’t open the cut unless u rly want more info bc. there's. A LOT. it will be a wall of incoherent rambling text im sorry)
ok first disclaimers: i know very little abt idols and even less abt modeling so!! if anything is horrifically inaccurate forgive me im stupid!! and also this will literally be stream of consciousness unedited so if it makes zero sense im very sorry
now we begin the madness
some background info: kite was scouted off the street (as he was walking off from pickpocketing someone LMAO) for his height and build, currently very sought after to model for many brands because he’s literally the same as the sketch models on paper so the designers don’t have to compromise on their clothing designs to fit the model, bc he just. looks exactly like the paper sketch. also the white hair is very distinctive!! and his prep/management team is his research team <3 he’s currently the face of several brands, including the zoldyck brand (i see the zoldycks as a very influential family in the fashion/modeling industry, kikyo was a former model until an accident, now she’s focusing on designing, all the kids are involved in the industry somehow, illumi is within the same agency (?is that how modeling works) as kite). he’s in his mid-twenties ish and hes 6'3" - 6'4" (190 - 193 cm)
wing and his idol group debuted a couple years ago (haven’t thought too much about the members, but im thinkin feitan maybe? kurapika?? shalnark?? idk guys maybe he’s a solo act) and they’ve skyrocketed to fame. uhh in terms of content they produce, thinkin something similar to wayv/bts type music (stuff that crowds just eat up LOL like love talk by wayv, luna by oneus that kind of music) and im thinking that wing’s debut look was REALLY BAD (they made the poor man blond) but when they put him back to his normal hair color he got rly popular. he’s had some bad eras where the stylists made him look a little goofy but… he’s good now (his best era was the mullet era). also he was trained by bisky who was a former idol who has retired and she's a legend in the industry… and wing is currently guiding an idol trainee (zushi lol). wing’s in his early-mid-twenties i think and he's 5'9" - 5'10" (175 - 178 cm)
ok and the main 4 fit into this uhh... i think gon is also an idol trainee along w zushi. and killua is currently modeling for a popular teen's clothing brand. i think i mentioned kurapika as being a part of wing's idol group but lowk i think maybe he's an actor instead. leorio is also. an actor. yeah ok there we go
uhhhh ok general thoughts:
i see them meeting at like.. the met gala or its equivalent and they meet when wing trips over kite’s clothes (he’s wearing something with a ridiculously long train and wing isn’t looking where he’s going), and at first wing thinks kite is super standoffish/rude bc he doesn’t apologize or offer a hand when wing trips… he just.. sorta stares at him on the floor for a second then clacks off in his very pointy shoes (he was flustered abt the very pretty stranger who just fell for over him. also he was STRESSED asf) (also the perspective that wing had probably didn't help bc bro was on the floor and kite was staring down at him from a height of like 6'9 with the heels)
afterwards there’s a bunch of pictures and edits of wing falling over all over the internet bc it was kind of funny… and ppl are telling him like “oh my god you tripped over yorknew’s top model the LITERAL FACE of fashion right now” and wing is like “damn i didn’t know also he’s a jerk”… and to kite ppl r telling him “oh my god the country’s MOST POPULAR IDOL tripped on you” and kite’s like “uhhh.. who?” (he doesn’t keep up with the entertainment industry despite being a part of it) and they both search each other up and they both have a moment like “oh my god i fucked up (also he's really hot)”
anyways they continue randomly (not at all random very much orchestrated by the people around them) meeting at things,,, there’s a very awkward apology from kite where he explains (sortof) why he didn’t help wing up… uhh stuff happens they fall in love and start dating LOL (i didnt think abt this part that hard) and for a hot minute there r paparazzi photos circulating of them together and the media is losing their collective shit
fast forward a little bit and they r like “yea we r together LOL” and then u start seeing kite at wing’s concerts in a spectator box staring very lovingly at wing on the stage and wing (and sometimes his whole idol group) starts showing up to fashion shows and wing looks like shellshocked every time kite steps onto the catwalk hes got kind of an awed stare on his face
ok future thoughts:
after abt two? ish years dating (engaged for 6 months out of those 2 yrs) they have an extremely private wedding with only close friends invited, and when ppl start noticing theyre wearing wedding bands (takes a while bc wing usually wears a lot of rings anyways, and kite wears his on a necklace and not on his hand) the media has a collective meltdown. again. (i am the media in this i think. i have meltdowns bc of them.)
um and eventually (around when him and kite get married) wing's idol group splits apart as they all go to pursue individual passions/careers, so now he's workin on his own music/vision. i think his personal music is much more peaceful and vibey than what his old group produced, more gentle love songs and poetic music and whatnot.
and kite steps out of the spotlight and is focusing on nature conservation philanthropy type stuff,, so he'll still step out and model for charity/fundraiser type stuff and he's the face of a large conservation foundation. (also bc sometimes he'll join like.. ocean cleanup initiatives or similar things and like. imagine ur volunteering to pick up garbage on the beach and u literally see like. anya taylor joy and her husband also out there picking up garbage or smthn. that's how the other ppl feel.) hes also a big advocate for no kill shelters and donates a shitload to them i like to think.
so yeah ok if u made it this far bless u!!! i dont really have any coherent storyline thoughts just this aggregation of random world building thoughts ok bye (btw if u have thoughts on this feel free to dm me abt them or tell me what u think in the replies or tags im brain rotting abt this stupid au so hard rn)

Part 2 of 2! Alright, Dressrosa, let's talk about it. This will be SPOILER HEAVY so if you have not gotten this far in One Piece turn back, ye lousy land lubber!!! YOU'VE BEEN WARNED!!
This guy. This guy right fucking here. I love him, your honor. In a show that is absolutely chock full of attractive characters, Law wins Sexiest Man in the One Piece Universe for me. The man is a SURGEON, a Warlord of the Sea, and walks around shirtless with them abs because a motherfucker CAN. His backstory is, in my opinion, one of the top three most devastating in the entire series as well (Robin and Nami are the other two). When I found out his tattoos were to honor Corazon, the tears started falling, man.
I sincerely hope we get more of him in future arcs because while he did feature prominently in this one narratively, he was either getting carried around like a sack of potatoes by Luffy or getting his ass absolutely handed to him by Doflamingo. I can't wait to see him fully powered and healed up.
Now had it already been spoiled for me that Sabo would make a comeback and somehow also have the powers of the Flare-Flare fruit? Yes. Because the internet has absolutely no fucking chill. Did I expect his return to be one of the most powerful emotional beats of the entire series? I did not. Luffy's reaction to finding out Sabo was still alive was one of the most beautiful moments in over 700 episodes of OP for me. Mayumi Tanaka knocked it out of the park with the voice acting here. I sincerely hope to see Luffy and Sabo reunited in future arcs.
After waiting and waiting....and WAITING for the final duel between Luffy and Doflamingo, I have to say that Gear Fourth did not disappoint. It was entirely extra and completely in alignment with Luffy's personality. He earned the long and several tons of meat in the episodes that followed.
Final thoughts:
I mostly loved the collaseum fight. The pacing was great in the beginning and some of the newer characters, specifically Cavendish and Bartolomeo were a delight to have on screen.
The toy soldier episode broke me in twain. Gorgeous, emotional, Kyros wins for dad of the millennium.
Bellamy may be the dumbest motherfucker on this show and that's truly saying something.
Not loving how every single arc seems to sexualize and objectify young women's bodies (Rebecca is 16, y'all)
God Usopp was one of the funniest moments in all of One Piece
Zushi Zushi no Mi, god DAMN...is that potentially another world ending devil fruit like the one Whitebeard had??
The pirates swearing allegiance to Luffy gave me the CHILLS...homeboy is building a fleet without even friggin trying
The Straw Hats are a prime example of: if you believe in something strong enough, it will absolutely manifest. They're all goddamn magicians.
I just started Zou and am already in love. It's such a shift in tone and pacing from the exhausting yet important arc that was Dressrosa. On to the next binge session :)

My current hyperfixation is The Untamed/Modao Zushi, but I write for whatever. I've got a lot of one shots for properties I think are neat like Welcome to Nightvale or Parks and Rec.
4. what are your top 5 fics by kudos?
A Passion for Mushrooms, Mountain Flowers, The Seedling, Family's Just Another Word for Something Left To Lose, and In Town for the Wedding. Four in Hobbit/LotR fandom and one Naruto.
5. do you respond to comments? why or why not?
I really try to. I appreciate feedback so much. When I'm in a funk it really brightens my mood, so I want to respond and build community with readers not just drop a story. And sometimes I go months without checking my inbox which makes me feel awkward about replying. It's a mix.
6. what is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Interestingly, Family's Just Another Word For Something Left To Lose, according to some readers. It's ambiguous at the end and *a lot* of people think Kakashi dies, which is not at all my intent. I was paralleling the same scene with Iruka in the anime, and Iruka survives. It did not occur to me that the ambiguity would be what so many people took away.
The one I wrote that's intentionally angsty at the end is all i hear is your gear, which has no happy intentions and is all just about Crowley being a demon in hell.
7. what’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
So much of my stuff is romance with a traditional HEA ending, but weirdly the ending I like most is A Spy in the Shire. It's a happy ending for this one oc dwarf, but in the broader context of the series I think it both emphasizes the Everyone Lives/Nobody Dies AU happiness as well as justifying the many sacrifices made in canon.
8. do you get hate on any fics?
yeah for sure. And I am sensitive about it. If it hits me when I'm already feeling low, I usually have to stay away from fandom spaces for a while and I often lose the motivation to write at all. It sucks. Some of it I can brush off more easily, like the Iruka/Kakashi shippers who come onto my fic to make fun of the way Mighty Guy looks and try to pick a fight. They are likely children and I just don't engage. But the people who criticize my writing or a specific story for reasons they are happy to detail can be harder to ignore.
This is of course a very different thing than the helpful folks who point out that I've once again mixed up desert and dessert. Y'all are lovely and I appreciate the help.
9. do you write smut? if so, what kind?
Yes, as the mood strikes. ...the kind I'm in the mood for? Almost always romantic stuff between a major pairing.
10. do you write crossovers? what’s the craziest one you’ve written?
Listen. Ron Swanson and Wolverine would be very good friends, actually. My Parks and Rec / X-men crossover is not crazy.
11. have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not to my knowledge.
12. have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! One of my Naruto fics is available in Chinese and two of my Modao Zushi stories can be read in Russian. As I speak neither language, I can only assume the translators did an awesome job of making my writing smarter, funnier, and sexier than it is in English.
13. have you ever co-written a fic before?
No, but I find the idea of collaborating interesting.
14. what’s your all time favorite ship?
This is not how my brain works. I pretty much constantly have a Current Obsession and then pairings I still enjoy. Right now, Wangxian invented love, but I'll always enjoy revisiting a certain romance involving Mister Spock or the Leverage Pretzels and Beer OT3.
15. what’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
I desperately want to finish my Zombie Criminal Minds series, particularly because being able to revisit it will mark the end of my pandemic / outbreak related brain gremlins.

I'd like to do more with humor. I feel like I frequently manage to provoke a sensible chuckle, but I've read fics that make me crack up. Someday, I'd like to write a really Terry Pratchett style laugh-a-minute story.
18. thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
Sometimes you gotta do it, because it's in keeping with the canon, but it's always best to do sparingly. If it's longer than a greeting or an honorific, I like to translate directly within the narrative or use a footnote.
19. first fandom you wrote for?
Slayers. Yes, I was that anime kid in high school.
20. favorite fic you’ve written?
My favorite child? Well, I've never really cared for Pit Stop...
I suppose, back against a wall, I enjoy the world building in None So Blind. We just don't spend enough time in dwarven spaces that aren't complete ruins in the canon. Coupled with thoughts on fantasy accessibility and the classic trope of tripping a romantic lead into a pile of literal pig shit, I just like it. Good work, 2018!me.

Last movie: The second spiderverse movie. It was too fast for me, but it seemed cool. Good vibes. I do enjoy animation and stylized cg over live action, so I am glad these movies are doing so well, but I think this is it for me on watching any more.
Currently watching: Just finished binge watching The Good Place. An extremely solid show. Well rounded, funny, great acting. Cathartic ending. Cried about it a lot thinking of the message it's trying to convey. Eleanor and Michael were my favorites, but that's no surprise that I like the Arizona trashbag and the fire squid demon in a Ted Dansen suit.
Currently reading: Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio, by Pu Songling. And as always, Modao Zushi every time I have to check something for my donghua rewatch. And slowly catching up with The road to reunion by Onomatopoetikon (prequel movie xmen ff)
Currently working on: Still in the process of my Extensive Note Taking rewatch of the Founder of Diabolism (mdzs) donghua. I am mostly done with notes up to s2, but I binged s3 again because I wanted to write instead of take notes (WIP doc available on the CX Heaven discord). s3 continues to make me so angry I am not sure how I'll convince myself to do the full note taking. Comparing each episode to relevant novel sections is also emotionally taxing, in the sheer damage that the donghua does to the Twin Heroes relationship... so! This will be a while... but this an underlying project for my fem-mxy!wwx fic which ... may... take the place of "mainfic" for ever getting published? Jury is still out on that.
Current obsession: MDZS themed brainrot continues to make a marshy bog of my psyche. Chengxian, Twin Heroes, and Jiang Cheng in that order, but surprisingly I seem to be writing and thinking more about WWX in all my WIPs and I just noticed? Predominately, I have been writing these stories from his perspective 😅 Zoids au, naga!jc au, majority of fem!mxy au, jc wolfcurse post-canon, White Hair Wuxian smutty oneshot... Maybe it's just easier to write him because the novel is a baseline but also I think I understand and respect his multiverse shidivision.

Do you mind if I ask your top 10 favorite characters (can be male or female) from all of the media that you loved (can be anime/manga, books, movies or tv series)? And why do you love them? Sorry if you've answered this question before.....Thanks....
Oh this is so fun to answer! Since this is my anime blog I’ll stick to anime/manga.
10. Kageyama “Mob” Shigeo
Mob Psycho 100 is not only weird and fun, but emotional with highs and lows. As goofy as Reigen is, Mob is the heart of this show and his growth is wonderful to watch. He struggles with his powers and emotions but the fix isn’t changing himself as much as it is accepting himself and the relationships in his life. At his core, Mob is incredibly caring—that’s what makes him so special. He’s not a self-sacrificing hero of the prophecy, he’s just Mob. He’s kind just because he is.
9. Olivier Mira Armstrong
I love badass female characters and Major General Armstrong does not disappoint. She’s calculating, cold, and incredibly good at her job. Sometimes, I feel that when writers introduce “strong women” in their stories, they either take a masculine character type and slap it on (the brutish tank, lone gunslinger, etc) but don’t shape their personality outside of “being the tough guy—but a woman!” Or they let a strong woman be feminine but have to emphasize that’s she’s not like the other girls, she can keep up with the guys. Major General Armstrong doesn’t suffer this mistreatment. She is strong, she is fierce. She is a woman. These things don’t affect each other. She is her own character with a personality developed outside of just being a role subversion. Also she’s pretty and has a sword (on one hand I don’t like using a saber, on the other hand saber looks so cool).
8. Roy Mustang
Another Fullmetal Alchemist character…this will be a theme. I think FMAB has some of the best written characters of all time, including Roy Mustang. He could’ve just been a goofy-but-badass charismatic boss and I would like him, but he’s so complex. Mustang is a product of his environment who realized it too late. But instead of escaping his sins, he trusts in his support network to help him rise to the top and ensure that what he did never happens again. Mustang spends the series hiking back from hell up a pathway of good intentions and not without stumbling. He has blood on his hands and he risks the lives of his team and children under his command (Ed and Al)—is that worth it? Mustang’s ideal society would execute him for his crimes. And yet, that’s what he wants. Oh I could talk about him so much more. What a good character.
7. Alphonse Elric
Despite spending most of the series as a suit of metal, Al is incredibly expressive. He balances Ed, but they still bicker like brothers and have their disagreements. He cares and it shows in the little things—the cats he hides in his armor, the support for his friends and respect for Mustang’s team, the willingness to hear out an enemy with a reason. He’s also a traumatized kid who encounters alchemical horrors—the scene with Martel’s death holy shit. What a scene!! He’s not always sunshine, he has trauma and he reacts in sometimes unhealthy ways. Like all FMAB characters, he’s written really well.
6. Alluka Zoldyck
Alluka! Am not gonna lie, a lot of it is that I think she’s just so cute. And despite being hidden away for most of her life and focusing on more childish things like games and hugs, she’s not completely naive. She navigates living with another being sharing her body and mind, an abusive family, and violent lifestyles. Unlike characters like Neon Nostrade or Zushi, she’s not gullible or oblivious, and doesn’t accidentally sabotage her brother’s efforts like child characters sometimes do. Also she’s so sweet when she loves Killua and Nanika! She’s also a canon trans girl who isn’t sexualized. Go Alluka!
5. Denji
As mainly a Chainsaw Man blog, Denji has to be on here. He’s grown on me so much since I first read the manga. I don’t think I can explain why I like him in such a short paragraph. He’s a dumb, broke, horny teenage boy with magical chainsaw powers from his dog. He’s been manipulated all his life. He got a good life and a family that he was made to kill and revealed to be set up so he would suffer their loss. And yet, he adopts Nayuta, he follows his promise to Pochita, he acknowledges how much his platonic relationships mean to him. He can be an asshole but at the core he’s a good person and doesn’t push boundaries to get what he wants.
4. Riza Hawkeye
Roy Mustang can’t be on this list without his queen. The reason I like them both is pretty similar. They both are fighting to atone for what they’ve done. Hawkeye is special in the way she supports Mustang’s every step. She doesn’t have to act the same as him, she’s definitely her own person with her own struggles, but the reasons I like her are just like Mustang’s. She’s also a badass. But when I think about why they are my favorites, I think of them together. Their relationship, whether you see it as romantic or not, is what makes them such incredible characters. They are the true ride or dies.
3. Power
My reasons for Powy being one of my favorites is not as deep as others. Yes she has great character growth as well in learning to care for others, but she’s feral. She has demon horns and blood weapons as is feral. She cackles when she laughs and she speaks like a 12 year old trying to write a medieval novel and doesn’t eat her veggies. She bites to show affection and her brothers style her hair for her. Her cat is named ���Meowy”. She’s a mess and I love her.
2. Edward Elric
How can I talk about Fullmetal Alchemist without the Fullmetal Alchemist himself? I love this short king for his character design (badass coat, auto mail, braid with the anime hair vents). FMAB would not be a cohesive story without Ed, not just because he’s the main character, but because of how curious, smart, reckless, and loyal he is. Ed brings the cast together. His character growth is great for a child soldier. He’s powerful but still learning that the world is more than black and white. He’s insanely talented at alchemy but not for being born with it, but his passion for and experimentation even when it fails (and boy does he fail!). He has moments where he struggles with his disability and prosthetics but it does not hold him back. And he loves his friends and family so much and shows it in ways that matter to them! The Winry gun scene…. Anyways I love Edward Elric.
1. Killua Zoldyck
Hunter X Hunter is the one of the earlier anime I watched and it holds a special place in my heart. Killua is great throughout. You meet him and you’re like “sick! 12-year-old white-haired anime boy on a skateboard” and then he rips a serial killer’s heart out. He alternates between being tortured (literally) by his past and being a goofy kid who spent 1.5 million dollars on chocolate during the 4 years his dad made him fight MMA matches for a living. And then you find out he’s desperately fighting for free will to stay by the side of the only person he’s ever loved who is another self-sacrificing preteen boy who he has a suicide pact with. And then when said boy almost dies from overusing his magic rock paper scissors power, Killua breaks his sister free of their assassin family to heal him.
His magic shounen power is using electricity because he was electrocuted so much as a kid he’s immune to it. He makes (*ⓛ ω ⓛ *) cat faces. If that doesn’t tell you why I love him idk what does. He’s everything. And he’s extra special to me because he’s a tragically sad gay kid with a crush on his best friend. Hits a little close to home. The “Gon you are light” speech makes me cry. I don’t think I can actually put into words what he makes me feel. He’s just like his theme song. Listen to “The Silver Haired Boy” and you’ll know exactly what I mean.

This is a difficult one! I've loved a LOT of characters over the years even if the current blorbo of interest is NHS from MDZS/CQL bc he's just such a fun little guy BUT lets see if I can try to do this chronologically and not in like, any character ranking fashion:
1 & 2: these two characters are absolutely the rulers of my heart: Huang Rong and her father, Huang Yaoshi from Legend of the Condor Heroes by Jin Yong. I just love my beloved spoiled conwoman princess and her insane evil wuxia version Maes Hughes dad so much. I could write so many essays about the Huangs and how they mean so much to each other and also to me. I'm always insane about family members who have complex relationships with each other and that's super evident with them.
3. Uchiha Madara from Naruto. Now, people who have known me for a long time know that I am a Naruto girlie, and that I skipped all the way to "Sasuke's Insane and Sad Pathetic Ancestor" on the character likes list. I love insane murder men and Madara is an insane murder man! He's also very sad. What's there not to like about him truly.
4. Mirasol from Chalice by Robin McKinley. I have a deep love for beauty and the beast narratives and this one ALSO had magic bees. I love Mirasol for her kindness and her devotion even in the wake of massive change and I have a special fondness for the entire story of Chalice both for the lovely worldbuilding and also Mirasol herself.
5&6. Sansa Stark and Cersei Lannister from A Song of Ice and Fire. I really really love both of these characters for entirely opposing but also really similar reasons! I love them for their flaws. For being stuck in their positions in a world that's really just! not! kind to them! and how they take that and go in such different directions.
7. Sheng Rulan from The Story of Minglan. I have such a soft spot for Rulan. She's petty, she's spoiled, she has so much love and holds onto her principles and her dreams so tightly, she's her father's least favorite child despite also being a legitimate daughter, she finds love, she's so cute, she's the clearest sighted of all four of the Sheng sisters, she's got such a growth arc to her, I love her SO SO MUCH. (I love all three of her sisters too don't get me wrong, Rulan is just my favorite.)
8. Wei Yingluo from The Story of Yanxi Palace. Yingluo! My girl! Never have I ever seen a female lead with so much pent up rage and desire to get even in a story that does not judge her for her hard edges and her propensity for violence. I love that about her. I love how kindness and cruelty and how her quest for vengeance never destroys her ability to love and care for others and recognize other people's genuine kindness and the difficulties other people face in life. I love her shrewdness and her determination to survive too! I'm just! So fond of her!
9. Jaskier from The Witcher (TV). I RARELY TALK ABOUT. MY UNAGING BARD BLORBO. BUT I LOVE HIM. I love the messy relationship Jaskier, Geralt and Yennefer have in the Witcher TV show and I REALLY love the way that Jaskier is portrayed. I don't know anything about the games but! I just! I love! This annoying kind of foppish man because annoying foppish male characters are another beloved character archetype for me, see below.
10. Nie Huaisang from The Untamed/Modao Zushi. Beloved Blorbo. Little crimes man. Unfilial and spoiled. Beloved for being SO jiggly and full of trauma and his tragedy is writ large to me because it! powers! the plot! without his tragedy there is no plot! he burns down his social circle because he loves his brother! There's just so much in here that's like, oh god. I love that he's an annoying foppish dandy and that he loves his pets and creature comforts and that he doesn't enjoy working hard and has so many problems. This too is life. I love this little guy I want to rotate him for a good long time.

i have more hxh thoughts
spoilers for hxh (2011) episodes 27-29 under the cut!
God. Just imagine being Zushi, this incredibly talented kid and you’ve probably never met a kid more talented than you. and then you meet these two fucking weirdos Gon and Killua who are like miles ahead of you and they’re also kids! They’re just wildly even better than you somehow. Anyway he’s a good kid i like him a lot
Me earlier: hm I wonder why Killua’s dad wanted him to make it to the 200th floor. bet there’s something special about it or something
Me when they reach the 200th floor: Ah yeah that’s why Killua’s dad wanted him to reach the 200th floor huh. Really gonna do that to your six-year-old son huh. Anyway fuck that guy all my homies hate Killua’s dad !
Anyway thank you Wing for teaching Gon and Killua and also me about nen (sidebar: i had heard of nen but only in the vague sense that there was something called nen in hxh but then quickly avoided anything else about it whenever i saw the word anywhere)
It seems like Gon is already good at the main concept behind the second thing that I forgot the name of ! Like Mr. Wing was listing off things and all the characteristics of the second thing were like “oh yeah that’s just Gon!” so that bodes well for Gon at least. Like even if he hasn’t actually done this in this way he is good at the underlying ideas behind it!
Also. Where we’re leaving off before the next set of episodes. I was expecting Gon and Killua to hit a wall at some point when it came to fights. And it looks like we’re probably there. But also. This weird spinny top fight with this weird spinny top guy seems like just the sort of fight that Gon might figure out a clever way to win. Either way I am very much looking forward to seeing how he loses this fight or wins this fight, and I’m so excited to see what he learns from this fight either way.
Also. I miss Kurapika and Leorio already! I know it’s only been three episodes but still!
EDIT: and the new intro! Same tune different words! “You can try again!” New people in the intro! And I think that’s Chrollo Lucilfer of screenshot x screenshot fame (and Zushi of similar fame but i expected to see him since I knew we were headed to Heavens Arena) (although we still haven’t seen the screenshot with the glass yet! excited for it to show up soon though!)
