History of Novoselic (Part 3)
So the 1930s rolled in, and the question of who would succeed Josip was in debate. Zoya had most of the qualities to lead but did not have military experience. Paul, by comparison, had a few issues with ruling as a king, but was exceptionable in military tactics, specializing in air warfare and guerilla tactics, and had a keen eye for talent within the youth. But the debate raged on untill eventually, a solution was found: They would vote on it at the Rastek.
It was tough, but everyone in the Rastek and the public decided to vote for who would be the new monarch. After some complications and sorting out a bit, in March of 1932, the first queen of Novoselic, Zoya Nevermind was elected as the new Monarch, by a vote of 143 to 139 in the Ustek, or electoral college. As for Paul, he was appointed as the Novoselic ambassador to Great Britain.
Zoya right off the bat, started to show some strange behavior, such as exhibiting near-dictatorial power, banning free elections and the press, and cracking down on those who spoke up. Created a secret police, called the Auslejc, who proceeded to patrol the streets and arrest people on the accusations of them being "Communist" and "Stalinist sympathizers" Hundreds, even thousands of people were arrested and were purged from the start of her regin untill the end of the war. Propaganda was used extensively to promote Zoya's regime as a golden era and she would like to star in films a lot, often ones that were really bad. It was so bad, that she starred in more movies rather than leading the country, which was in the hands of her ministers.
Back home in Britain, Paul was horrified by the news, but he couldn't go back. Zoya had postponed his flight back to Novoselic indefinitely, no doubt in an attempt to hold onto power. And so Paul stayed, already trying to mend deteriorating relations with Britain and France as Zoya courted Fascist Italy, and now Nazi Germany too. Zoya had taken a liking to Hitler, supporting his policies, especially against the Soviet Union and Communism, even calling for a genocide of ethnic Russians. Paul, on the other hand, was making friends with people like Winston Churchill of all people, who was a key figure in getting Paul back to Novoselic.
As the 30s progressed, Paul was becoming more friendly with the British, though was frustrated at Parliament for hesitating against Fascist aggression in Africa and Europe, like the incidents over Ethiopia and Czechoslovakia. He demanded they stop trying to appease the Germans, claiming that starting a war was what they wanted, and it was already happening, saying that they wouldn't just stop at the German lands. And he was right. On September 1st, 1939, Germany invaded Poland, starting WW2.
Paul knew this would happen and so talked to Churchill, by now the prime minister, about the possibility of sending him back to Novoselic to lead an insurgent movement against Zoya. Churchill was a little hesitant at first because Paul would have to go through Greece, which was neutral at the time. However, in 1941, the Germans invaded the Balkans in support of Italy, who were getting their ass destroyed by Greece and Yugoslavia. With aid from Novoselic, the Germans invaded and conquered Greece. Since Greece was now part of the conflict, Churchill finally agreed to send Paul back to lead the resistance against the Germans, Italians, and Zoya.
Paul's plan was to fly a plane to occupied Greece in the middle of nowhere, and then drive several miles through tough terrain to head to Novoselic, where he would meet Novoselic partisans fighting the Axis and be their leader. Accompanying him were a few British commandos in disguise, sent by the British as bodyguards to protect him on the way. And so on July 8th, 1941, Paul flew to North Africa and then from there took off to Greece. Once in Greece, Paul wasted no time finding transport, eventually seizing an Opel Blitz that had been left abandoned by the Germans, and drove to Novoselic. The journey was tough, they had to stop for food, water, and gas frequently and were almost detained by the SS, but eventually, he made it to the town of Cara, where the British intelligence said the rebels were there.
Upon arrival, Paul wasted zero time taking charge of the rest of the group and broadcasted his voice to other rebel groups in the country, telling them to unite under him in a coordinated effort to bring down the Axis. Eventually, he untied the rest of the Novoselic groups around his cause by 1942 and went on a guerilla campaign against the Axis. What made Paul special, was that he was great at fighting and leading a rebellion even more than his own father. He would sabotage the tanks and select where to fight, either in the dense forests or the high mountains and hills. He also started the first command pose, which was to show authority in the line of duty.
By 1943, Paul had expelled the Italians out of the mainland, by capturing their field commander during the battle of Ostos. With Italy suing for peace soon after, Paul was left to combat the Germans and Zoya alone. By the middle of 1944, the rebels had taken most of the South of the country and were advancing North. The Germans, by this time, were fighting on all fronts, the Eastern Front had fallen apart and they had to pour resources into fighting everywhere, and fighting Yugoslavian partisans didn't help matters either. Eventually, the German commander in charge decided to give up, and by late 1944, issued a withdrawal into Czechoslovakia.
Zoya, pretty much alone at this point, tried to escape with them, but was found by the partisans. She was captured, tortured, and then executed on Paul's orders. Paul felt guilty at having to order the death of his sister, but it was either her or the nation, and the nation mattered far more to him than his sister, who betrayed the people to the fascists. The following year, British forces coming from Greece arrived in Novoselic, already having self-liberated itself. With Zoya's death, most of the generals surrendered or went into hiding. And so, Novoselic became united again, with them electing Paul as king shortly afterward, and proceeded to do away with Zoya's rules.
But now, Paul had to lead the nation into a new era, against a familiar rival and in a world more spilt the last...

She averts her gaze as soon as she hears your confession. This is always an awkward position to be in, no matter how many of her Sinners have professed their love for her.
“I’m flattered...” She’s hesitant with her words, feeling for any reaction from the shackles. “...And I’ll always cherish you as my Sinner. But I can’t give you the love you’re looking for.” It’s kind of cheesy, but she means it.
❥ Receiving
Fortunately, Chief is skilled at improv. Her brilliant idea is to pretend she confessed as part of an undercover mission.
“Nevermind, forget what I said. I lost my bearings for a second.” She waves you away and digs into her pocket, pulling out her comms device. “Sorry I put you on the spot.” She then dials Nightingale to ‘reveal her plan,’ but it crumbles into a cry for comfort instead.
❥ Giving
“You’re cute, I’ll give you that.” Zoya doesn’t mean to mock you, but it’s hard not to feel humiliated beneath her. She knocks a gentle fist against your shoulder and flashes you a well-meaning smile. “Hey, you’ll find someone worth your time. You deserve better than some Syndican thug anyway.”
❥ Receiving
Most people obey Zoya without question, either out of fear or loyalty. She commends you for not giving in the same way. Her talk with you is brief but respectful, and she doesn’t hold anything against you.
The signs of her wounded heart only appear once you’re out of sight. It’s left her in a very nasty mood. She seeks out any chance she gets to destroy something—whether that’s by picking fights with rival gangs, or wrecking up whatever car/window/person is within reach.
❥ Giving
“...What.” The shock lingers on her face for all of ten seconds. She hadn’t seen this coming at all. “I don’t—I, um—is this a prank?” Her face is bright red, brows furious, gape incredulous. She concludes you must be messing with her, and yells at you for being weird.
❥ Receiving
“Y-You actually believed that!?” She starts firing punches against your shoulder, hard enough to bruise. “I just wanted to see how you’d react and you went and took it seriously! Now get out of here and learn what a joke sounds like!!” But she ends up being the first to flee the room.
❥ Giving
As a beloved director known all over the world, Deren is no stranger to spontaneous love confessions. It’s a little different coming from you, though. As soon as she realizes what you’re trying to say, she takes a sharp breath and picks up your hand. “I’m glad you like my work. Really, I’m flattered.” She leaves no room for you to say anything else.
❥ Receiving
“Mhm... good.” Deren never drops her lazy smile, and this time it’s more unreadable than ever. “You ever consider acting? You’ve just got something about you...” The way she seamlessly deflects from the topic catches you off-guard. You press into her some more, asking if she’s really okay after getting rejected like that. All she does is shrug and say, “Hm? Yeah, why wouldn’t I be?”
❥ Receiving
Eirene maintains an icy stare while waiting out your answer. When you finish, she crosses her arms and meets you square in the eye. “I’m sorry, I must’ve misheard you. Would you mind repeating yourself?” It might sound like she’s trying to coax a different response out of you. But she’d actually prefer you to stand your ground and counter her—it makes the thrill of the chase all the sweeter.

Remember when I said all Zoya fans love her? Nevermind, there are people that are supposedly Zoya fans but think that Zoya is inherently inferior to Alina
Like, Queen Alina is not her stealing Zoya’s story because
1-Alina did took being engaged to the prince for a while, and the show storyline is not over, it’s not even started we haven’t seen it at all
2-Zoya’s story also haven’t started, we have seen nothing from it
Like i know tumblr grisha is very pro Monarchy, i know you people think political power is what give women value and therefore women without power are worthless in your book but seriously it’s not quite reasonable to complain about things that haven’t happened

Sorry about Shadow and Bone S3 getting canceled. Heard the show was not really aligned with the book plot and the views don’t meet the numbers to break even point to the production cost. That true?
David was assumed dead at the end of season 2 series, so I’m truly disappointed about it, I like that guy :( I also like that Wylan guy. I haven’t read the books but the show made me like nikolai with mal, and nikolai with alina, so like a trouple…. Um nevermind XD
How did Nikolai and Zoya’s story start and build? Tell us what makes you ship them? :3

Yeah, s2 was kinda okay on the sab end (my beloved Nikolai on screen) but on the crows end it definitely felt like the writers knew they were going to get cancelled and just shoved so many emotional beats way earlier than they should’ve been. And then it got cancelled so yeah!!
They didn’t find David’s body which usually means not dead but I guess we’ll never know now! And also yeah for the show I absolutely ship Mal Alina and Nikolai as a throuple like the compass? All three of you are dating
Okay now ZOYALAI! In the books Mal and Alina fake their deaths and retire at the end of the first trilogy, then there’s King of Scars that picks up a few years later following Nikolai as king of Ravka and Zoya (plus Genya and David who are happily married… for now) as the Grisha Triumvirate. Now Nikolai and Zoya weren’t really together much in the trilogy (though rip “Zoya? I make it a policy never to seduce anyone prettier than I am” Alina should have dumped Nikolai just so I could hear him say that line when she suggests he go for Zoya instead) but in KoS they’re a power couple who aren’t dating. The king and the general, they just have the best banter and Nikolai is always thinking about how pretty Zoya is (that damn blue ribbon) but of course they can’t be together for political reasons. Doesn’t stop them from going on a road trip together to exorcise a demon from Nikolai, a trip on which Zoya would chain Nikolai to his bed every night so the demon wouldn’t escape and she was the first thing he saw every morning. The demon would break out to save Zoya when she was in danger and Nikolai’s like hmm it’s probably because this is the Darkling’s magic and the Darkling favoured Zoya… nothing to do with my feelings that’s for sure.
They’re also grumpy x sunshine… Nikolai’s full of humour while Zoya’s cold and scary and they complete each other. Also when Nikolai was told that Zoya as a powerful grisha would outlive him he went “Then I will love her from my grave” like get you a man like that

Watching Shadow and Bone Season 2: Episode 4 - I don't like how far we are in the timeline already
Last one, then I'm going to bed. Not worth messing up my finally normalising sleep pattern for this shit of a show.
Love the intro. Yes, please, tear Ravka down, if you wish to do so.
I hate Vasily, but that is a fair reaction.
I notice an interesting change in the dynamic here. This is Nikolai's turf and they're discussing it over dinner, insetad of being marched into the throne-room and looked down upon by the King.
Less than year... If I have the timeline right, it's been barely half a year.
Also, Zoya of all people is one to talk. I mean, she's tellingthe truth, for once, but like...
So... if the ugly uniform the Queen's idea? Like, sure, I guess, but why the fuck would Alina choose to wear it later?
And I see Baghra is back to being preachy.
Ah, yes, the Fold is the reason people hate Grisha. Definitely no pogroms happening before that happened. And Kirigan will definitelly stop trying to change the world if its gone.
And I see the "West Ravka" plot has been forgotten.
Alina "My responsibilities start and end with tearing down the Fold" strikes again. And Vasily is watching her... making out with her boyfriend. Dear Saints, if he's going to accuse her of being a traitor because she's kissed another guy, I think he'll have to execute his own mother, too.
I like this Alchemi kid. And Baghra's being preachy again.
"Endured years of abuse at your orders". Genya had her agency. Had being the operative word, because she unfortunately became popular and that necessitated that be removed.
"Everything I learned, I learned at your knee" Finally, someone said it.
"Redemtion" my ass. Still don't know what exactly she imagines under those words.
Well, that's a change from taking four whole episodes to kill a person.
I guess everyone believes in the Saints, now.
I mean, I guess we have to have a fake plague somehow without Nina being maimed by drugs.

Called it. It would have been more impressive if it hadn't been like 2 minutes later, but this show presumes the viewers have no concept of memory, so they can't really bring it up once and then bring it back an episode later.
I'm like 90% sure Nina is faking betraying him, but okay.
Now, that sounds like a trap if I've ever heard of one.
Or not.
This was a good scene in the book and they've made it good in the show. No complaints here.
Except maybe that I still have trouble deciphering the fucking Irish accent, but that's on me.
Wow, would you look at that, a previously unadressed plot point we're bringing back.
I mean, that's one way to distance Alina from the monarchy so her stance is not as dumb, but like... the show needs to pick its villains and stick to them. I hated getting constantly hit with "Well actually" in Fate and I will hate it here. I have absolutely 0 faith that the show will actually make this work out in a remotely satisfying way.
Oh, look, corsets suck joke.
Also, like... Alina, I don't think insulting the crown prince is a good idea. But given that we're deaing with Alina "I like to give big men with guns lip" Starkov, I shouldn't be expecting a sense of self-preservation.

I am not a make-up expert (in fact, I don't know jack shit about it), but I'm not a big fan of Alina's make-up in this scene. IDK what it is, it just kinda rubs me the wrong way. I think it's the lipstick.
"Coming from you that means a lot"... what? Why? What does she know about ruling? Like, yes, I just don't think her input in private is all that valuable.
Vasily deserves to get his arm ripped of by the Nichevoya. In fact, it can't come soon enough.

I personally prefer the book version of this confrontation... that one was intimate and she had a goal and an agency.
I didn't agree with that goal (sacrificing herself to destroy Aleksander), but it was a goal, it was intention.
I'm honestly angry I kinda want to watch another episode to see what more they fuck up, however... I should really go to sleep. I'm cooking tomorrow and I'd rather not hurt myself because I'm sleep deprived.

History of Novoselic (Part 2)
So Novoselic was a free nation, with a constitutional monarchy and Josip at the head. He married a fellow soldier, named Maria Bronchek, who would be the first Queen of the nation. She would then go on to father two children: Zoya Nevermind on October 20th 1911, and Paul Nevermind on May 5th, 1912.
However, peace didn't last for long as WW1 broke out, and Novoselic had no intention of getting involved. However as the German Empire, Austria-Hungary,, Turkey, and Bulgaria began to get more involved in the Balkans, with Serbia falling in 1915, Josip realized that war was pretty much inevitable and declared war on the Central powers in January 1916. The Central Powers in response invaded Novoselic in March of the same year and destroyed the Novoselic forces. Josip might have had a decent army, but they were no match for three powers coming at them from all sides. Within just six months, 90% of Novoselic's army was annihilated on the field
But Josip didn't give up, as he led an underground resistance movement against the German empire and its allies. Despite some success, they weren't really able to get a decisive victory, though they did weaken the enemy forces considerably, inflicting mass casualties. Eventually, the British, French, and Italian armies managed to push the Central Powers out of Novoselic by April 1918. Novoselic was free again, but at the cost of a thousand dead and many more wounded, and the nation was devastated.
Josip decided to solve the issue by rationing goods and sending people to the agricultural fields. He also announced that every man would have to work in the industry business, like railroads and shelters as a plan to industrialize Novoselic. He adopted the Western style of market economics and focused both on the agricultural side and on the industrial side. He allowed private ownership of small businesss as a way to rebuild the economy. In short, Capitalism was applied here.
But as the 1920s progressed, Josip was starting to fall ill. Now he had contracted typhus during the winter of 1917 and the typhus issue stayed with him for the rest of his life. While he was overseeing a nation prospering and rebuilding, Josip was dying. Once that was head in the Rastek, which is the Novoselic version of Parliament or Congress, a debate occurred about who was to succeed him. His wife planned to abdicate due to age as well. Most agree that Zoya would succeed him, after all, she had the ability to be a leader and had some of her father's qualities.
However, in his mind, Josip I believe wanted Paul to succeed him. He was afraid of Zoya's friendship with Fascist Italy, where Mussolini and his Blackshirts were rising to prominence, as well as strained relations with the new Yugoslavia, who wished for Novoselic to join Yugoslavia, which Josip basically told them to fuck off. And then, if this wasn't bad enough, the Great Depression hit.
Novoselic's economy crumbled and with it, the era of prosperity was over, a return to the post-war years. And to make matters worse, Josip died. The King and Father of the Nation died on February 15th, 1931. Across the nation, millions mourned the death of their leader and he was buried in his hometown of Plejeck, Novoselic. Still, Josip left a legacy, coming from the humblest of beginnings to leading Novoselic through dark times. To them, he is the true king, a god-king for them. Across the nation, Books, literature, poems, musicals, theaters, everything was dedicated to Josip, becoming a Novoselic icon.
However, the real question was on everyone's minds: Who would succeed him. This question would have to be answered as the 1930s rolled in.....

The Darkling x Reader
The next day you woke up with a full belly and a rested mind. Your body no longer ached as you took a well-deserved bath. The servants knocked on your door in the early morning, however, you refused them but not after taking the food they offered. You looked through the wardrobe, finding nothing to your liking, so you were forced to wear something you had taken with you to the little palace. It was still too simple- too plain for your taste. You managed to speak to a seamstress about some clothing, but upon her finding out you don't belong to a single Grisha order, she scurried off, afraid she was being made a fool. You sighed and settled down. you have no right to be mad, nobody knows who you are. It is as you intended it to be, and looks like Aleksander wanted it that way too. To the Grisha, your order, or lack-there-of, is a myth, a fantasy. Some even consider it as heresy, a betrayal to the order of Grisha and the Saints, a mistake and abomination.
The stigma always caused you to hold back on your potential, never fully pushing yourself to your limits. At one point, Aleksander was scared of you; of what you couldn't do yet. Every day you learned something new, but every day you lost the knowledge to do another thing. It was a vicious cycle. But one day you tried yourself, you felt euphoria. It was a feeling like none other. But with it came destruction and death. You couldn't control yourself. The cycle continued until you pushed yourself too much, power overtook your being, let you slip away for a brief moment. A moment that decided the next 98 years of your life.
You knew how to control yourself now. It took years and the touch of many others, but here you were, an Elemental. A Grisha with the power of all orders, you could do what the Etherialki could do with ease, you could manipulate metals and chemicals and could stop a heart at your will. The healing wasn't yet a skill you had yet.
You weren't born with these powers though. You have to acquire them in a certain way, 'take them' if you will. It's what gets your tale the bad rep. A touch is all it takes. A simple touch of the hand when a Grisha is practicing the small science. It doesn't hurt anybody, you always swore it didn't. But once you acquire a power, it doesn't mean you know how to control it. It gets out of hand, it's as if it has a mind of its own, like Aleksander's shadows, and that's what causes carnage. Sometimes you could still remember what it felt like to summon those glorious shadows.
With that thought, you quickly go back to real life. You were standing outside Aleksander's door. Did you have to knock? The oprichniki let you through immediately and didn't look in your eyes as you stood at the door. You let yourself in, forgoing your manners.
'Aleks-'
'Y/N'
'Oh um hi, I was just wondering if you could tell somebody to actually make me some keftas, they're all running away from m-'.
You noticed he wasn't alone. The heartrenderer from yesterday was standing at the end of the room with another one of his kind. A woman in a Squaller attire along with them.
'-Am I interrupting? I can come back later'
You said that but didn't move a muscle. Like hell you would leave a room that almost belonged to you all those years ago.
'That would be ideal' Aleksander looked at you, waiting.
'I changed my mind. I'll stay-'
'Y/N'
'-until you sort my keftas out. Saints what did I tell you about interrupting me. It's quite rude' You seen the girl's eyes widen.
'So is barging into a meeting unannounced'
'General Kirigan, please can you do something about my keftas before I run out of clothes and have to walk the halls of the Little Palace bare' You jest. You were itching to wear a kefta. It had been way too long. He flushed and his eyes flashed an emotion of... longing? You couldn't tell but you knew that did the trick.
'Ivan please escort Ms.Y/L/N to the seamstress quarters and tell them to do whatever she wants.'
Aleksander spoke calmly looking directly at you. So his name was Ivan? You could finally put a name to the face.
'No, I'd rather go with the other one' You whispered so only he could hear with side-eye. He looked at you with an amused grin.
'Nevermind, Fedyor you go' The brunette heartrenderer got up with a smile on his face. He looked kind.
'Ms.Y/L/N, follow me'
He hooked your hand onto his elbow and you contained your girlish giggle. It had been so long since you were treated with this respect. It made you giddy.
'I'll see you around, General.' You looked at him and then at your audience. Ivan looked mad, as he always did, the girl looked jealous. You wondered if she and Aleksander had a thing going on, you wouldn't be surprised. She was beautiful. Once out the door, Fedyor started speaking
'That was Zoya. Mean little thing. But an amazing soldier. I'm Fedyor if you didn't catch that. Ivan isn't all that bad when you get to know him. He's my boyfriend. I've never seen you around, are you new?'
You struggled to process the information as it came. After stuttering twice, you managed to get out a simple:
'Yes, I am new here.'
'You seem to know the General quite well, are you two friends?'
'Of sorts yes, old friends'
'It's nice to know he has friends, that man works so hard to keep us all safe I sometimes worry he has no downtime.' He sighs.
You look at him confused, was this man definitely his guard?
'I'm sure he manages on his own well enough' Some part of you still loved Aleksander, but over time you learned to recognize that the man loves working towards his plans more than anything or anyone.
Fedyor wouldn't stop talking about the Litlle Palace as you walked. Had you not known the place inside out and back to front, you would've been very impressed. Once you reached your destination. You threw ideas at the seamstresses. Fedyor stood by and looked perplexed at all the ideas and at one point, left. You requested keftas of all colors and styles, completely breaking the traditions of orders. You didn't care to explain why fearing that Aleksander didn't want people knowing of your kind just yet. You walked back to your chamber content with your day so far. You wanted to train once you got back, away from the prying eyes of other Grisha. You needed peace. You walked in and snuffed out the burning fire with a hand motion. The room was now silent, too quiet.
'Y/N'
You whipped your head around and found an angry Aleksander at your door, looking at the fireplace absent of the fire.
'We need to have a proper conversation where you tell me what in Saint's name you are doing here, back in my palace, I have entertained your little game enough.'
You kept silent much to his annoyance.
'Now.'

Ranking the books I read in April
aka just ranting about the books I read in april pls ignore me
1. The Space Between Worlds - Micaiah Johnson
I cannot believe this book wasn’t nominated for a Hugo! I like the Hugo list (of the books I’ve read) but cmon. This book is like if you combined the social commentary in The City We Became and the queerness of Harrow the Ninth. Seriously this book had everything I wanted: parallel universes, great character development, social commentary, woc sapphic slow burn, satisfying ending. Also I feel like the title is paying homage to W. E. Dubois which is cool. “Between me and the other world, there is ever an unasked question: How does it feel to be a problem?” Like there is just this very cool idea of talking about other worlds as in literally other universes but also different worlds due to social and racial hierarchies.
2. Plain Bad Heroines - Emily m. Danforth
Horror, Hollywood, boarding school, everyone is gay, the narrator talks directly to the reader and it is hilarious, copious footnotes, have I mentioned how many sapphics there are? It’s hard to keep track. Plus polyamory. I just really loved this book and I felt it all came together in a way that was worth it.
3. Steel Crow Saga - Paul Krueger
This godamn book. I loved this book so much. I was so ready to yell about it on tumblr and tell people to read it. But apparently the author is someone who has harassed a lot of women so...uh...yeah. Nevermind I guess.
I do want to say it is the most accurate depicition of a Sherlock Holmes superfan that I have ever seen in media.
4. The Tiger’s Daughter - K. Arsenault Rivera
What if we went on a long trip on horseback and we were both lesbian warriors...jk unless…
Yeah so I loved this book so much. A lot of it is about navigating familial responsibility, fighting literal and metaphorical demons, fighting the patriarchy, fighting your anger, fighting tigers, etc...and yet I kept thinking to myself “this is the most romantic book I have ever read” and honestly I am gonna stick by that. It also has the “you think me a monster so I will become one” trope which is great. It is set in an Asian-based fantasy world and I did read a goodreads review that said it was as accurate to the countries it draws inspiration from as Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse is to the Russian and Scandinavian cultures it takes from. So that’s not great.
5. Six of Crows - Leigh Bardugo
Speaking of! A few months ago I tried to read Shadow and Bone in preparation for the tv show and I could not finish it. The writing was...bad. Anyway I really liked Six of Crows and even though, yeah it’s tropey (I’m looking at you, Helnik backstory), there’s a reason those tropes work. Plus you cannot go wrong with a heist. About halfway through I did realize that there are six mcs and three couples so its kinda just like a giant triple date, which really changed how I read the whole story.
I’m very glad I did read it before seeing the tv show because I was able to be appropriately excited for the Crows and catch the Wylan reference and everything, but I also got to see the Alina stuff without having to read about it.
6. Crooked Kingdom - Leigh Bardugo
I think I somehow liked this even more than Six of Crows, but for narrative simplicity I’ll put it after. I really like it when you put people in an impossible situation and see how they figure it out. Especially if they get out in a clever and reasonably possible way that ties together many different plot threads and has a few good fake-outs. This did all of that, and also developed every character in a way I found satisfying (except [redacted] *cry emoji*).
Kaz pulls a Baru Cormorant with some money stuff and now I wonder if they would be friends.
I read this after watching the show which was good because I knew who Zoya and Genya were but bad because there is a point where Nina is like “here is how shadow and bone ends.” She’s just talking to Mattias and casually spoiling everything for me. So there goes my dreams of living spoiler free until the end of the show.
7. The Miseducation of Cameron Post - Emily m Danforth
My expectations for this book were....very different than it turned out, and I’m glad for it. After reading Plain Bad Heroines I shouldn’t have been surprised at how well written it is. I really appreciated how nuanced it is. It doesn’t spell out its ideas or themes and therefore lets you really sit with them. I would rank it higher but I don’t really enjoy reading about high school.
8. Foundryside - Robert Jackson Bennett
I love a good found family, especially if at the beginning of the book they are on opposing sides. Enemies to friends = best trope! Also it’s sapphic that’s always good. But the best part of this book was the worldbuilding which was so cool.
9. Malice - Heather Walter
Remember what I was saying about “you think me a monster so I will become one”? This book is the definition of that trope. Women becoming unhinged after being treated like shit, we love to see it! Especially if it’s gay. I do have to say, authors who write duologies where the first book ends on a cliffhanger, I see what you’re doing but yes, I will be preordering the next book.
10. Fugitive Telemetry - Martha Wells
I don’t have much to say because Murderbot is so consistently excellent. uh why is it so cathartic when xenophobes disrespect Murderbot and it’s humans step in and shut that shit down. Gets me every single time.
11. Queen of Coins and Whispers - Helen Corcoran
This book was like half romance half politics and unfortunately I did not find the politics that interesting or well written. But the romance was A+. It reminded me of Priory of the Orange Tree a LOT. Though significantly less dragons and I’m taking many points off for that.
12. The First Sister - Linden A. Lewis
I wanted to like this book a little more than I did. There was just maybe too much body horror for me. Interesting characters and world though. There was a location named Cytherea that they mentioned a lot and it was very distracting. I guess I still have tlt brainrot.
13. Shorefall - Robert Jackson Bennett
I think this book was well plotted out but it didn’t quite have my attention like Foundryside did. Also yet another book where a woman’s girlfriend ends up in her head. This time no one had to die so that’s nice. TM and SD take notes!
14. The Deathless Girls - Kiran Milwood Hargrave
Ok I LOVED the Mercies by KMH so I was a little disappointed in this Dracula retelling. It got interesting in the last 50 pages, but unfortunately that is not enough for me.

Kaz: you guys are lying in order to get something, i normally admire those qualities but you are using your one true love as a device. How shame...
Inej: wow, thats...pretty mature of you
Kaz: that´s right.I´m mature so you must give me the place
Inej: Nevermind
Jesper: you know what Kaz? If you take it i´ll get drunk and do that dance you hate so much
Nina: Well if YOU take it, i´ll use the same suit as you and you´ll cry because its going to look better on me.
Kaz: Since we are treatening each other let´s go full circle, if Zenik takes it i´ll attend with no hat covering my hair

Inej: Let´s set this straight (Nina, Jesper,don't) My parents will be at my wedding and i would rather not having them seeing Jesper´s special dance
Wylan: If Nina does get to overshadow Jes in our wedding, he´ll be sulking the whole day.
