literally sobbing because of the new wh chapter ;-;

rant/spoilers below

okay, so donald is my favorite character in weak hero by far, and i’m literally shattered that he just lost the union.

like a part of me knew as soon as the union was introduced that he’d lose in the end, but i was expecting eunjang and donald to fight, donald loses, but he’d still have his union, y’know??

and i know he’s an asshole and the union was scamming literally everyone and was for profit only and etc, but donald spent his life building the union and it’s gone now.

he just tried to keep himself alive in a cruel world dictated by a selfish economy and the only way he found to do that was to become just as cruel and money hungry as the ones who stopped him from being able to eat when he was a kid.

donald created the union from the ground up and it’s been taken away from him by the higher ups

donald has put his whole identity into the union (granted, not the best idea, but it’s understandable)

i’m scared to find out where this’ll go

i’m scared to know just how far down into the ground donald will drive himself and whatever is salvageable of the union

i’m scared to find out what will happen to eugene

i’m scared to finish weak hero in case donald really does lose everything because i’m really hoping that he makes a comeback from this. that there is something that he can do

Why I think Stancy will never happen again

I know it’s hard to see me as objective with this (given that I am a Jancy shipper), but I’d like to share my thoughts on this given the Stancy hints from season 4, volume 1 and the uproar of fans. Buckle up, folks! I’ve got some explaining to do.

I want to rehash what I said in a previous post about Nancy. The girl is lonely. She has found a best friend and boyfriend in one person but he is miles away from where she is. It’s normal for her to be worried and be lonely. We can see that Jancy is struggling with long distance and honestly, it’s not such a bad thing. It’s a realistic situation that humanizes these characters. While the slight hints of Stancy do make me iffy, it’s not really something to look into.

And here’s why…

We all know that Steve is Nancy’s first love. A part of him will always be special to her. It’s a fact. Nothing will change that. One thing we must note, however, is that her relationship with Steve will always be tainted by an inescapable dark memory: Barb’s death. This is the main reason why them getting together may never happen again. Given how vol. 1 ended, we can see that Nancy has once more been reminded of Barb’s death. Because she is reminded of that tragic night, it is most likely that the stains of her relationship with Steve resurfaced.

Moving on does not happen for all situations, sometimes we can only move forward. Clearly, Nancy will never get over her best friend’s death. She has come to peace with herself and delivered the justice needed, but she will never move on from it. By being with Steve, her thoughts on the matter is a literal step backward. And it’s not because Steve’s a bad guy, it’s just because of the matter of fact. This then plays in contrast with Jonathan—someone who she feels safe and secure with. He represents her moving forward.

Ultimately, I would really love Steve and Nancy to get proper closure. Their breakup was quite sad and lacking of communication. I think in the end they’ll be good friends. Unfortunately though, because of the entire Barb sitation, a friendship between Steve and Nancy will always be strained and it might be something vol. 2 would show/explore.

i know it’s like years old at this point but i love that one collab mumbo and grian did with tommyinnit bc it’s like the single most concentrated example i’ve seen of mumbo’s Chaos Nullification Powers

you get to see a bit of it on hermitcraft, mostly via his interactions with grian, but until seeing that collab it didn’t really hit me just how completely mumbo can no-sell other people’s attempts to control a situation. tommyinnit is possibly the single shoutiest, most chaotic minecraft youtuber out there, and in most videos i’ve seen he pretty much overwhelms everyone else and sets the tone for interactions because of this. but mumbo just. doesn’t let him. no matter how much tommy escalates in intensity, mumbo reacts with *exactly* the same energy he always does. grian largely comes across in the whole video as annoyed and reluctant to engage with the whole thing, but mumbo’s not even affected. he just rolls with anything he finds funny and basically ignores anything he disapproves of, only seeming more and more unflappable the harder anyone tries to get a rise out of him.

AND imo, this is the key to my favorite interpretation of him as a character

see, when the people around him are being more reasonable/calm, i think mumbo often comes across as anxious and a bit easily overwhelmed. the thing is, his nervous wet cat vibes do not scale. he has one setting. his responses to the last life ‘ah-ha!’ jokes and to hermitcraft 8 starting to crumble to pieces under a falling moon are almost identical.

mumbo jumbo is inexorably and eternally Just Some Guy, but that gets stranger and stranger the weirder his surroundings become. the giggly incredulousness that makes him an easy target for goofy puns looks Very different when it’s also his reaction to the impending end of the world.

#anyway yeah i have this whole idea in my head about mumbo’s friendship with grian from a characterization standpoint #bc i agree with the somewhat? common consensus that being friends with mumbo has made grian softer and friendlier over time #but i don’t think it was in a ‘reflecting back the kindness he’s being shown’ way #i think it’s because the more harsh and chaotic you try to be towards mumbo the more you feel ineffectual and out of control #and grian can’t handle it so he slowly becomes nicer until he feels like they’re on equal footing again #like don’t get me wrong i think they genuinely are good friends #and i don’t think this is necessarily something mumbo is doing on purpose #but i think the power dynamic going on under the surface is much more bizarre and weighted in mumbo’s favor than it seems at first glance #mumbling

Angel is a drunk runner. Whenever they get drunk they just start running. David always has to go and get them. Babe brought a leash one time when the group went out.

I will be honest I am pausing my studyblr posts to post for palestine. My brother has left this world recently (unrelated to the conflict) and when I try to distract myself from it I find myself in a world where almost everyone with any power is supporting the genocide of my fellow people.

Okay I’m going to say this and I’m going to say this once.

I do not like how the relationship with Jamie’s father was handled in season 3.

If they wanted to go the route of forgiveness they absolutely could have. If they wanted to go the route of his dad going to rehab they absolutely could have. Those are not inherently wrong or bad. It’s a show about forgiveness and I get that. It’s a comedy and Jamie is not the main character - I get that too.

My issue is this: the show went out of its way on multiple occasions to show just how violent and abusive James is. Just to give a few examples:

Repeated physical abuse

Repeated verbal abuse

Planning, funding, and likely pressuring the sexual abuse of his 14 year old son (a minor and below the age of consent in both The Netherlands and the UK regardless of the age of the girl in the red light district)

The willingness to beat Coach Beard (basically a stranger to him) with a metal pipe in a 3 to 1 fight in a back alley which could have realistically resulted in his death (and calling Beard “son” right before the final blow)

Jamie literally gave up his dream - a job as a professional footballer on a top hometown team - to leave the country on a trashy reality show just to get away from his father. The show traced a large portion of Jamie’s issues back to his relationship with his father. Not all of course - but that was a big theme of his growth and development.

So even if we entertain the notion that this stint in rehab was successful and James is sober - that’s great. That’s a storyline I wouldn’t mind hearing - IF we had the appropriate time to show it. But the thing is, we didn’t. This season was disjointed and rushed in many ways - and I’m not complaining - I still loved it. But if they’re going to tackle a topic this serious, they need to do it right. They need to be clear that alcohol was not the only problem James had and that sobriety does not absolve you of accountability. As important as it is to portray the message that all human beings can change, including addicts, it is equally as important to show the serious work that addicts in recovery put in to address the hurt that they caused through their addiction. It is not easy work to battle addiction and to mend relationships - sometimes part of recovery is accepting that you can’t mend things with everyone you’ve hurt and that is the right of the victim to decide how they feel.

We were shown none of this. What we got instead was:

A speech from Jamie’s mom about how he is still amazing despite his dad while still somehow crediting Jamie’s talent to his dad’s abuse

Ted telling Jamie to forgive his dad as he’s mid-panic about his safety and his dad’s location

Ted making a point to say the forgiveness was for Jamie’s sake, not for James - which was ALMOST good until they ruined it

Denbo and Bug suddenly supportive despite being just as violent as James in 2x09

James suddenly in rehab for 0.2 seconds

Jamie reaching out to his dad via text despite having no idea his dad is in rehab - something that is realistically compromising his physical and emotional safety

A quick clip of Jamie bonding with his father before the season/series ends for good

The reason I connected with Jamie so intensely from season 1 was the shared experience of abuse from my father. I want to be clear that I know I’m projecting - that’s what fandom is - and I in no way expected the show to end exactly as I wanted. However, this is what I would have liked to see as 1) an abuse survivor 2) a licensed therapist and 3) a person:

The message that you can heal without forgiving those who hurt you OR that you can forgive them and still not allow them back into your life (ESPECIALLY if it compromises your safety)

The message that sometimes people don’t change for the better and you can grieve that relationship while still fostering healthier ones elsewhere.

An emphasis on support systems and chosen family when someone doesn’t have the reality of a parent or partner getting better (we saw this with Bex seeking out Rebecca and Rupert’s assistant)

Instead of Man City suddenly cheering for Jamie, which felt insanely unrealistic, having the cheers of Richmond fans drown out the boos and verbal assaults of the Man City crowd - further emphasizing that despite the pain he has attached to Man City and his father, he has a home with Richmond.

So to wrap up this very long rant, I feel very disheartened by this part of the season. I still love Ted Lasso and always will - there were so many parts of this season I absolutely adored and wouldn’t trade for anything - but I feel that they dropped the ball on this one. Most people don’t get to repair relationships with abusive parents. Is it possible? Of course. Is it important to depict that it can happen? Absolutely. It’s a show about forgiveness. But they didn’t need to do it like this for Jamie’s storyline. They could have kept the speech about forgiving James for Jamie’s sake and deleted all of the rehab/texting afterwards. I still wouldn’t have been thrilled but it would have made more sense to me in context of the show. And it would have meant a lot more to me as someone who’s father is unlikely to ever stop being a risk to my safety.

This just felt bad. Jamie Tartt had one of the best arcs I’ve ever seen in media and he deserved better than that.

There is a difference between liking kids and being good with kids, and I swear some of the people who cannot tolerate kids are the absolute best with them.
