lawlight fic rec list

so i’m gonna do a series of these, starting with my favorite death note ship! make sure to pay attention to all warnings on these fics. enjoy! if you have a ship you’d like me to make a rec list for, please just send me an ask! i don’t want to be obnoxious, and i’m not saying they’re good, but i (slackjawbitch on ao3) have some lawlight fics up!

♡ 1. i’m drowning; please save me: L looks at Yagami Light and drowns. There is no other way to put it. As the days pass and blend into weeks, L looks at Yagami Light sitting next to him, the harsh lines of his face creased and determined, and he swallows water.

L looks at Yagami Light and he cannot breathe.

great characterization, always makes me very emo, and is probably a pretty major influence on my writing. one shot. 1,817 words.

2. always waiting for you just to cut to the bone: And then, breaking through the pounding in his head he hears what would be the last words out of that wretched man’s lips.

fic for teh death note drama (2016) canon! title is unfortunately from a t*ylor sw*ft song (/silly) but this fic is so good and sad.

3. Our Bodies, Possessed By Light: L. Lawliet is a gifted photographer who believes he has understood the light and its secrets. Light Yagami is a young, unstable and slightly crooked model. Together, they kill time.

modeling and photography au. make sure to read all teh tags and warnings for this one; there’s nothing gross, but some potentially triggering subjects for some people are in here. multi chapter. 81,218 words.

4. Hearts and Spades: Which would you choose? Love or death? RaitoL, slight AU.

short but sweet piece featuring that classic fanfiction dot net era vibe, an emo-ass playing card metaphor (/pos), and a recounting of l’s death scene that made me sad over him all over again (also /pos). and also light being obnoxious, but it’s death note, so that’s usually a given, lol. one shot. 1,801 words.

5. Not Quite Drowning: Sometimes Light ponders happiness. L/Light

a short lawlight and light character study. i like it a lot, and i don’t usually like light, so that should tell you something about how well i think it’s written! one shot. 424 words.

♡ 6. Water, water, water: In the bath, they forget they’re a detective and a suspect; they remove these identities along with their clothes, layer by layer until there are only the handcuffs left. And them; facing the other in the eerie calmness of their bathroom.

At least, it’s how Light sees it.

i really love this one! make sure to read teh tags, as eating disorders and drugs are mentioned, for example. angst with a happy ending! one shot. 3,504 words.

1. Silver Bells: Silver bells...silver bells...

They’ve made it. Everything is okay now, when they’re dancing in the candlelight.

really, really cute! i recommend it as a palate cleanser to make you feel better after reading a sad one, lol. one shot. 1,255 words.

just a cute little new year’s eve lawlight fireworks show! this one is also from 2009 which is kinda cool to me, haha. i like this author’s descriptive language a lot. one shot. 507 words.

♡ 3. Do Gay Penguins Go to Hell?: Too many New Year snacks bring about a family discussion between L, Raito and their daughter about healthy diet, common sayings and nature of good and evil. And gay penguins, of course. AU

a really darling kid fic, based on teh stupid, homophobic controversy over that adorable kids’ book about teh gay penguin couple. one shot. 3,791 words.

4. A Feeling: It's LxLight fluff! This takes place after Light was confined and lost his memories, chained to L. : D SO YUS. SOME FLUFF FOR YAH D: Hope you leik it :D

very cute “l and light cuddle and kiss” fic, written by a scene kid in 2008, which is extra points with me! one shot. 1,006 words.

Objectively speaking, light is a more compelling character than bakugo 🤷🏽‍♀️

i think this meant to be bait but i assure you my bakugou glazing is nothing in comparison to my light yagami hating

there are lots of other characters you could make this comparison with. like you could say lawliet or misa is more objectively compelling. in the traditional sense of the word, light just isn't lmao. he has a negative growth character arc and the most satisfying part of that arc is him dying miserable and alone

compelling usually means awe-inspiring or you know, invoking conviction. but light does neither. if you think that's too focused on semantics and you use compelling as a stand-in for interesting, then i guess you could make the argument that he is more interesting. but ill be honest i think the only reason light seems more interesting is because he's narrating the story unreliably. "objectively speaking" he has a similar life to bakugou, with a similarly overinflated ego.

as such, objectively there's nothing all that interesting about a 17 yr old, middle class, suburban popular kid with a good home life and social life being bored. he is an excellent catalyst for the story of death note, and his egoism and god complex make it very interesting. but he is not interesting. his boredom and intelligence and the opportunity the death note are what make death note fun. lets put this guy in situations. but he has a limited world view and lacks depth and nuances. even little touches of humanity that make him well rounded. he's not even evil for evils sake, just genuinely deluded and very boring. he also has virtually no personality aside from being kira. insane maybe but boring. if you want a comparable character who is more interesting then lelouch from code geass is an excellent example, though death note has better story telling.

again that's not to say death note isn't interesting, but it's certainly not lights character that makes it that way. most death note fans agree that the series dies when L dies and that's done with intention, as its meant to hold a mirror up to lights reality.

im not really a bakugou glazer enough to defend him as more interesting. but if you're asking me subjectively, it's a lot more moving to see a kid around the same age and from the same background - humble himself as a result of his failings and develop true and genuine emotional maturity. that might be boring to you and that's okay! but it's certainly more traditionally compelling and very difficult to execute, yet is done very well in bnha which makes him a more interesting character.

death note and bnha are not comparable to begin with though. like death note is one of the greatest animes ever made and lights story is a very well told one. but it's not because he is actually interesting but because he is narrated that way and the Story is narrated. its the way his simplicity snowballs into the dire and unbelievable circumstance, and the way it all ends with him dying a miserable, pathetic and ultimately human death. the circumstances around his simplistic and shallow character that make for a tragic and beautiful show.

bakugou is compelling, because any viewer can derive satisfaction and attachment seeing him become less of a little worthless bastard. his character is in many ways is one of the major moving forces of the bnha story and he would be a fun character in any universe because of his tenacity and general quirks and spirit. the same cannot be said for light. in any world that is not death note is an above average intelligent guy, but just some guy. he sucks

I’m not going to request anything this time, I just want to know your honest opinion about “LawLight”.

I have never seen as much yaoi content in an anime as in Death Note in my 30 years… I’m sooo old, and maybe that’s why I’m so sick of Tumblr suggesting me these kinds of posts and it has revived my hatred for this “ship”.

I mean, I’m not even sure if those people have watched the same anime as me…

Cartoons are fictional to start with, so buying into this is like double-dipping in make-believe, I don’t know if I’m making myself clear, lol. I know some people might say… We read ‘x reader’ stories, okay, but we reaaaally know that this is not real, instead of affirming something that doesn’t exist…?

Anyway, I just wanted to vent, hope I didn’t bother you, and that you understood my limited English.

I love Lawlight because I hate Light Yagami and I think he would hate Lawlight irl and any enemy of my enemy is a friend. That said I personally do not know how feasible it is as a ship. Im not anti Lawlight or anything— the fan content for this ship is great— but I do not know that the characters are all that compatible. I would normally leave it at that, but this is a prime opportunity to shit talk Light so I’m taking it. Here are my top ten implied realities of Lawlight which sink the ship in my opinion.

1. It implies that L would date a man he doesn’t even trust enough to believe isn’t a serial killer, which is ridiculous.

2. It implies that Light as Kira would not be so stubborn as to just refuse to be vulnerable with L out of spite.

3. It implies Light Yagami is capable of love.

4. It implies that neither of them wouldn’t view physical intimacy solely as an in to gain information from the other person.

5. It implies that either party would be content with just leaving well enough alone and not trying to destroy each other.

6. It implies that Light would deny his repressed (if you want to be nice) homophobia (which I cannot prove he has but believe he does with my whole entire heart) long enough to allow himself to get with L.

7. It implies that Light (and possibly L) would be cool with Ryuk watching them do couple things, sexual or otherwise.

8. It implies that Misa Amane would not beat the shit out of L for encroaching on her man.

9. It implies that Light would either top or not view bottoming as losing.

10. It implies that Light has the ability satisfy a partner in any way.

That said, their messy hypothetical relationship is undeniably fun to speculate about. Loads of fun fan works have come from the ship, and Light would despise the ship in real life, so who am I to knock it?

Synopsis: You and Light Euijoo Yagami met after the school graduation. You could say both of you two graduated as the most intelligent students in the school. However he was a real graduate student whiles you were a fake student and is a bit older than him, but due to your suspicions he is Kira, the most wanted killer of the city you had to pretend and investigate him. Well, you offer him to work with you due to his amazing deduction skills and to follow with your plan to make him confess he is Kira. Light accepted it….but he also had his ideas inside his crazy mind. He is going to kill you. Mehhh does he still wants to kill you after what happened to you two on the couch in L’s house? 😏

“ Im L…” she said her head leaning forwardly towards me. She sat on the chair in the most unlikely way a normal person wouldn’t sit on a chair. Her feet on the sit as her knees press against her chest.

She wear a white hoodie with black pants. Her black messy wolf cut hair dramatically fluff out of her head meanwhile her white tiny bow stayed on the side of her soft puffy hair.

So this is L? An emo chick? Never expected it to be a women nor someone like this….I mean how could I tell when the voice the talked to us trough a microphone or a computer was a voice mixed with other different tones of robotic voices.

L stare at me with her big eyes, her dark pupils staring into my soul without blinking and a tiny smile creeped across her pale face.

“ You are? How can you prove to me your are not joking? L…”

Now she grin widely. “Well…..your father’s name is Soichiro Yagami, and in that room the people that talk to me are…Mr. Aizawa, Mr.Matsuda, Mr, Ukita, and Mr.Ide…and last night we talked about the Kira case…remember?……I don’t know how else to proof to you…but that’s alright, I will have a meeting with the others as well…..” She stopped smiling. She got off the chair and put her hands inside her pants pocket.

“Fine I’ll believe you, L….” I put up a fake smile and shook hands with her.

That is how met L. She is amazing doing her job I will admit that especially when she’s a woman it’s surprising….but no matter how amazing she is…she will never…and I’ll make sure that she’ll never find the real Kira.

“ you are Kira…” The black hair woman said nonchalantly as she sat on the chair in her usual strange position and took the plate of strawberry cake in her hands.

Light is Kira….that stuff he said and did recently has proven to me. It’s just a matter of time before he confesses it to everyone.

L thought.

“How many times have I told you I’m not Kira! I don’t even have the death notebook. How could I kill people without that book…?” Light said with a calm demeanor yet a bit of frustration came out in his words. He sat on the couch that was placed in the middle part of L’s works place.

“That’s what I will find out….” She replied while chewing and staring blankly at the computer.

Damn it! She won’t stop saying I’m Kira! She sounds convinced and I cannot let her think that! In some way or other, I have to stop making her think I’m Kira, I cannot let her ruin my plan…

The young man rests the back of his body against the couch, his face looking at the ceiling still thinking. L put her food down and turn her rolling chair in his direction.

“ Light, you seem tired…for now I’ll leave you alone with the Kira thing, but…I think you need a massage…I’m good at massaging you know…” L smiled kindly at him as she approach him.

“ I am tired, and your assumptions about me being Kira is more tiring to hear…” The young light brown hair man sighed as his honey dark brown eyes stare at the ceiling.

Suddenly he feels both of his feet free from his shoes and socks. With a shocked look, he look down immediately watching how L massaged one of his feet with her hands. “Light, relax…” she simply said yet still staring blankly at his eyes.

What is she planning? To kill me? To find out if I’m Kira by massaging my foot? No…that’s a stupid thought…and very unlikely of her.

Just relax Light….

As she was on her knees she pull off her white hoodie from her body. “It’s hot in here…” she said as she stand up fixing her black thin tank top.

“Now I will massage from your shoulder…and maybe your temples too…” she smiled slightly. Standing behind the couch.

“Thank you, but why are doing this?” Light asks as he still finds the situation suspicious.

“Today I’m in a good mood and generous, and since we’re alone today, I thought I in helping you relax a little. Since you’re an amazing investigator, you deserve a massage from me. Also just letting you know you’re not the only person I massaged, I’ve massaged other people too but only when we’re alone….” L continue rubbing her hands against his shoulders, moving closer to his neck and above his chest.

Light, slowly closed his eyes as the feeling of relaxation hit him. “So you’re taking advantage we’re alone today, huh?” He slightly smirked. “Right…” L replied.

Light opens his eyes and notices her breast almost touching his forehead. He was shaken a little but….what’s wrong with taking a little stare at her pretty round breasts?

Light never found her attractive. Actually he never even thought about her like that. After all, she is his enemy in secret. Light Yagami is used to dating cute celebrities and beautiful women. However, the difference between those cute and beautiful women and L Lawliet is…that L is extremely intelligent.

Simply as that L Lawliet is just a very intelligent woman.

“Are you feeling good…Light Euijoo Yagami,?” L asked as she look down to meet his eyes. “ was saying my whole name necessary?” He asked opening his eyes to look at her. L was smiling. You sat next to him and stare at his brown eyes. “Yeah we did L, I honestly don’t know how to feel about it.” He said glancing at your cleavage from your tank top. “Then let’s not waste time, Euijoo.” You straddle him and sat on his groin. oooh, what do you like about Rollo? he's a really interesting character, I love seeing what drew people to him!

(warning: a few religious references) (s w e a t s) okay I'm going to be honest with you right now. I didn't finish GLOMAS. it was up when I got the game but I didn't go look at much of the event. i'm looking forward to it this year

But personally, it's probably because Rollo falls under a certain demographic for me. Similar to how I like:

Jade (TWST), Barbatos (OM!), Alfons (ikevil) - cunning butler. excel at what they do, mysterious and seemingly self-confident.

Azul (TWST), Diavolo (OM!), Elbert (ikevil) - emotionally stunted, unconfident, usually are forced into some sort of leadership / higher position. cannot express themselves as others usually would and they're all the masters of the butlers wtf is this pattern

But Rollo falls into a different category. A category that I don't usually develop feelings for (😭). It's more philosophical, something that makes me think. What I found most intriguing about him psychologically was his antihero mindset. Have you ever heard of the novel "Crime and Punishment" by Fyodor Dostoyevsky? In some ways, Rollo reminds me of the main character, Rodion Romanovitch Raskolnikov. And... Light Yagami also.

In summary, "I will be the evil to end all evils".

Or, as Dostoyevsky says,

"If there is no God, I am god."

Another similar character in this demographic, perhaps a bit more recognizable than Raskolnikov, is Gene Forrester from "A Separate Peace" by John Knowles. All these characters tend to have a certain outlook towards the world. I can't quite explain it because it's rather complicated but feel free to look into it. I took a Raskolnikov attitude to life as well at some point (very very unhealthy. my villain arc.) and reading Crime and Punishment was very eye-opening, in more ways than one. It is still my favorite novel.

Rollo is extremely prideful and alienated from others because of his disdain for magic users. His goal during GLOMAS is rather ironic: use magical flowers to rid the world of capable mages. He convinces himself that it is self-righteous, and takes fate into his own hands, displaying a sort of autonomy.

Oh, man, I love so many characters who make bad decisions! This is going to be tricky.

I'm not sure whether your question was 'who are your five favourite characters who make terrible decisions?' or 'of your favourite characters, which five make the worst decisions?', so I'll give you two lists.

Five terrible decision-makers who I love, emphasis on 'who I love':

Sean Diaz from Life Is Strange 2. Look, I cannot blame this kid for going on the run with his nine-year-old brother. He was panicking, the police were coming, and a police officer had just ruined his entire life, so naturally he was unwilling to stick around and encounter more of them. It was a deeply understandable decision, but it was nonetheless a decision that fucked a lot of things up.

Ellie from The Last of Us. I started loving Ellie in the first game, which was before she started making really terrible decisions. But I still love her after her desperate 'if I kill enough people, I'll feel better, right? right???' quest of the second game, and that definitely means she qualifies for this list.

Jack Shephard from Lost. Jack is a grieving, angry, unstable mess who's been thrown into a leadership position when he's barely clinging onto any form of reason with his fingernails. He has a lot of intense feelings, a gigantic saviour complex, poor self-control and no ability to delegate. Everything he does is a) guaranteed to blow up in his face and b) absolutely fascinating to me.

James Sunderland from Silent Hill 2. Look, if your dead wife tells you to come to a town, and then the town is full of monsters, you turn around and leave. I feel like there was another big terrible decision he made too, but I can't - I can't quite remember. That's weird. I wish I had a recording or something to jog my memory.

Light Yagami from Death Note. Light is very smart, but he's also very proud, and he loves using his own intelligence to convince himself that the correct course of action coincidentally happens to be the thing he really wants to do. Yes, if he kills these people in this way, it'll make him look suspicious. But that's what he wants! It's all part of his ingenious plan to catch L, and totally not just because he wants to send L a personal 'fuck you' message. The 'fuck you' is coincidental. This is a very smart move.

Five terrible decision-makers who I love, emphasis on 'terrible decision-makers':

Seifer Almasy from Final Fantasy VIII. One of the first terrible decision-makers I ever developed a fondness for! Seifer, you can't assist an evil sorceress in taking over the world just because you think it's cool and romantic and you really want to show up your rival at school.

WD Gaster from @zarla-s's Undertale fancomic Handplates. Gaster is an expert in doing terrible things while convincing himself that there's definitely, definitely no other course of action. He's awful and I love him.

Chloe Price from Life Is Strange. Chloe is an absolute disaster in a way I find refreshing from a female character. Playing Life Is Strange is a struggle because I want Chloe to like me, but everything she wants me to do is terrible. I don't want to steal money or shoot people or hang up on my distraught friend, Chloe!

Aaaaand Jack Shephard and Light Yagami again. Fascinating characters. I could watch them making ill-advised decisions all day.

This is going to sound aggressive but I promise it's just because I'm passionate about this and not because I'm flaming anyone or trying to shit on their headcanons/force my narrative down.

ANYWAY:

Light is severely fucking traumatized by his father (he even calls him "dad". DAD. Light being informal with someone like Soichiro??) basically calling him a murderer, a monster, and that they'll both meet each other in Hell before quite literally turning the gun on him.

Yes sure he plays it off quickly because it's Yagami fucking Light and he always regains his composure quickly (especially when he knows someone is watching, especially L), but you can't tell me it doesn't haunt him even when he regains his memories. He has night terrors and might even had some delayed panic attacks after they returned to base.

You can say Kira didn't care/barely cared about Soichiro dying but for the rest of the chapter they hide his eyes and Ryuk doesn't say SHIT. He's silent not just because there are other people around but also because he's silly, not stupid - he knows not to overstep that boundary after the shit Light did to Penber after his father called Kira evil.

You can't be bound and watched 24/7 for almost two months and then have your father pull this shit and just go back to living normally without ever thinking about it again (unless he deeply suppressed that memory and as much as Light can handle immediate stress - he cannot handle a consistent build up, it shows up well with how he snaps like 100 times), especially when you're still put under 24/7 surveillance while you really think you're innocent and start gaslighting yourself. Yes I know Yotsuba act Light was correct but HE DOESN'T KNOW THAT.

Look at it. You gave it dissociation. Everything about that operation was illegal and sadistic towards Light even if Kira-Light set himself up to it. Kira did a lot of things that were self-destructive and damaging just to get his way and/or survive and while yes he's a mass murderer with basically no remorse (He loved his family and I'll die on that hill) but we need to remember he's still a human and he does, by some miracle, has feelings and that guy goes through such traumatizing things like Misa threatening to do irrational things that could blow his cover, threatening innocent women's lives, and Rem threatening *his* life making him suddenly responsible for another killer, being confined under pretty damn inhumane and dehumanizing conditions, being led to believe his own father was planning a murder suicide with a girl he felt protective of, that felt protective of him too, Misa's screaming and begging and then gaslighting himself on and off and having to baby L's depression to find the real Kira -

He puts up with SO MUCH and still manages to forge small human connections and not lose all of his remaining sanity/compassion and now I'm just repeating myself so.

Light is traumatized and while he's a terrible shitty person he didn't deserve half the shit that was done to him, memories intact or not.

A/N: Another WIP that finally sees the light of day. Because I will never get tired of making these two oblivious dorks kiss for the first time in every universe possible.

Summary: It was one simple kiss that turned their ignorance into awareness of what had already been there the entire time...

Day 4: First kiss | Characters: Taichi Yagami (POV) x Sora Takenouchi | Genre: Subconscious blooming romance | Rating: K+ | Wordcount: 1.344

7:47am. When he woke up this morning, he had told himself he would start early, so he was sure to leave Hikari and Sora’s apartment on time for a change. But it had already been eight whole minutes since he had started fighting the tie around his neck in front of the mirror.

Frustrated with himself and that stupid string of fabric around his neck, Taichi growled. “I have this very important meeting at work I cannot mess up,” he said to no one in particular.

“You good?”

The female voice came from the kitchen and belonged to Sora, since Hikari had already left the house for her internship at the kindergarten. From the corner of his eyes, Taichi could see her peeking.

“Yes.” Taichi said, but didn’t sound to convincing. He decided to switch his answer. “No. This tie, I swear, these should be forbidden!”

Sora grinned, with her elbows she nonchalantly leant on the kitchen counter. “You’d think as someone working in suit and tie every day, you’re good at tying it by now.” She teased him.

“Except I’m not.” He was fully aware of his tone sounding annoyed. And he was, because somewhere deep down in him, he knew he would always struggle with it. “And never will be. Sor, can you help me one more time, please?”

He definitely needed her help. Like he had needed it all the other times he had stayed over these past couple of weeks.

Sora chuckled as she made her way over to him. “Come here.”

“Good thing I’m staying over.”

“You’re practically living here by now,” Sora joked while her hands prepared the two sides of the tie around his neck for the actual tying. Her eyes fixated on the accessory.

Sora’s joke was one with truth though. The girls’ apartment was closer to Taichi’s work than the loft where he lived with the three boys, plus, it had a more cozy atmosphere compared to the messy boys’ energy. He had lived with Yamato, Koushiro and Jyou during his entire time at university, but now that Taichi had started working, he was ready to go a different direction regarding his living space.

“I don’t want to be near Yamato and my cousin getting it on constantly.” Which was another big reason why he wasn’t at home right. He watched a blush forming on Sora’s cheeks, her hands still working on his tie, softly and with care.

“Too much information,” she said. “How about Koushiro-kun and Jyou-senpai?”

“Ugh, Jyou’s never at home, either in the hospital or with his girlfriend, and Koushiro is busy most of the time, hidden behind his desk and wall of computers. Different from me, the boy is resistant to Yamato and all of his bedroom shenanigans.”

Sora laughed. She spent a lot of time with Koushiro, her being one of those rare friends who could talk to him without any form of technology between them, and she was very much aware of Koushiro’s ability of radiating the ‘I’m not giving a shit’ energy.

“Jealous?”

“Please,” was Taichi’s answer.

He wasn’t jealous, it was just him being ready for a change of pace. And so he found himself crashing on the girls’ couch quite a few days per week. He had to admit though, it also came in very handy that Hikari or Sora –but mostly Sora—were always available to help him out with his daily outfit struggles.

Maybe he was in need of a life partner to settle down with, who could match his changed needs and wants, Taichi thought to himself, knowing he couldn’t keep crashing the girls’ couch forever.

“I much rather stay here with my lovely little sister and incredible friend who is—”

Sora patted his chest lightly and Taichi shifted his attention towards her hands after returning from his thoughts.

“… great at tying your ties.” Sora finished for him. Her feminine fingers worked their magic once more and a perfectly knotted tie hung loosely around his neck. She carefully adjusted his collar and the tie itself, making it look sharp. “There, you’re all set.”

The softness and collected happiness in her voice made Taichi smile. He showed her his signature grin before turning himself to the mirror to look at himself. Behind him he saw Sora look at him too and his own heart weirdly skipped a beat.

“Thanks,” he quickly said to cover himself, still genuinely happy with Sora’s fashion knowledge and friendly help. He walked past her to get to his jacket and coat.

“Oh! There’s this dinner thing at my place tonight, will you be there too?” Taichi remembered as he put the jacket and coat on.

“Sure will be,” Sora answered while on her way back to the kitchen. Again, he felt a bolt of luck going through his body and warming his chest.

“Great! Looking forward to it.” He hastily slid into his shoes, his eyes checking out the time on the watch around his wrist. “Shit! Okay, gotta rush, see you toni—”

“Wait! Not yet.” Sora shouted from the kitchen. Taichi already had the door opened, doorknob in his hand, as he turned his head around to see Sora crossing the small living room towards in a rushed pace. In her hand she held his lunchbox and he instantly remembered it was what he not only forgot to grab, but forgot to prep and pack as well…

“You left this,” she said it as if he hadn’t seen what she was bringing him. He took the box from her, immediately feeling it wasn’t empty, meaning she had not only noticed he forgot, but had actually prepped and packed it for him. The heat from his chest slowly rose to his cheeks. “Have a good day at work.”

She smiled at him with her kindest and most genuine smile. It made him smile in return and for just the briefest of moments, time stood still.

“Thank you, you too,” he said, suddenly realizing he was in a hurry. With the lack of air between the two of them, he swiftly close the gap and planted a quick kiss on her lip—

Wait.

He did what? When— how?

Time seemed to stand still once more.

“Erm… sorry,” Sora spoke first, face completely red, chest high from all the gathered air inside of it. “That wasn’t supposed to happen…”

Taichi shook his head, with that trying to get him out of his daze. “Right… So much for all the accusations of us looking like a married couple huh?” He joked, automatically resolving to comedy to cover up his own redness.

“Y-yeah, hehe…” Sora nodded as one hand moved itself nervously to her lips, her fingers touching the spot where he had pecked her like a husband kissing his spouse goodbye for the day.

Even though he had been unaware of his own feelings at first, apparently, his body had known what to do. The kiss blissfully happened by itself, showcasing both him and her what sparks had been exchanged. Not only during the time spent in this apartment together, but during their entire life by now.

It occurred to him that, rather than searching for someone to settle down with, perhaps he had already found that someone. Sleeping underneath the same roof, she tying his ties, bickering like only lovers could.

That it was just one simple kiss turning the ignorance into awareness.

The smile on his face grew bigger. As much as Taichi wanted to stay, especially now –to reflect a bit longer, to talk about his newfound excitement— he had to run.

“See you tonight, Sora.” Taichi said emphasizing her name as he took off.

He looked over his shoulder one more time, just to be met with the view of Sora waving him goodbye like they had indeed been married forever. To that, Taichi snickered to himself, in his securing Sora would be the one to untie his tie at the end of at least today.

Perhaps he could even steal another kiss from her…

In all honesty, I doubt that L would use the Death Note with the same intention as Light Yagami, or would've even used it at all. He would've read out the entire rule of the Death Note, ask a few questions and figure out a few loopholes he can exploit before going, "That's... so boring???".

L, to me, is the sort of person who doesn't give two shits of the criminal whom he apprehended. He had fun tackling the case, got his pay and let the government do their jobs in the aftermath. At the very least, he wouldn't want said criminal to roam the streets freely— as long as they're somewhere not amongst the civillian, then L fails to see why bother using the Death Note at all.

It's kind of funny when people said, "L would've joined Light had given the chance and eradicate the world off evil" because that would've contradicted L's whole character— and that being having the time of his life solving the unsolvable. What kind of entertainment is there if he just sits in front of his silly laptop, reading off solved cases just to write down the criminal's name and attend meetings with world leader? Sounds boring to me. L would've sentenced himself immediately.

I thought I didn’t have much to say about this, because I agree with it, but if you are the person who sent the previous asks or has read the others, you should know that I cannot for the love of God stop myself from writing. I recommend a drink and a snack, by the way.

I just want to preface this by saying that I did write a post about it, and if you are interested, check it out. It’s not long nor elaborated as these answers I give, but it sums up my opinion and it’s more about the “what if” L grabbed the death note before Light.

I don’t know in which post I wrote that I also think using the death note would take away the challenge he gains from solving crimes, but that’s another of my arguments as to why he wouldn’t use it.

Now, the post will focus on the reasons you provided and the opinions I found in the fandom that would contradict the idea of him being similar to Light in this regard.

[I wrote this after I finished the post.] Before I start, and I’ll talk about this thoroughly: the line between suspects and criminals is slim, and L deals mainly with the first ones. It’s important to remember this, while reading my post, because, while the ask talks about criminals, we have to keep in mind L’s actual job. So, consequently, it might be off topic in some parts, and this is the reason. Another thing is that I consider different situations L might find himself in. I tried to explain the details as much as I could, but there might be some variables that I did not disclose properly. Hopefully, they can be understood by the context.

PREMISE:

In the “I am not justice” speech L gave at the Wammy’s House, even if I think most of it was bait, I do still believe there is some truth to it, because I am not one to point the finger at L and criticise the fact that he does what he does because he likes it.

Work and pleasure can go hand in hand, and hopefully it can also be possible in this universe soon.

At the end of the day, L still solves crimes, still catches criminals, still provides “justice”, no matter what his main goal is here, which can also be getting a kick of serotonin by being challenged. There’s nothing wrong with it, as long as he does what his role requires him to, so it's one thing that I don't get about the fandom or those who think it is wrong.

Do you want him to hate what he does? Don’t you think that would make him more prone to take the short route out and detain suspects without any reason, until they confess? Or just straight up kill them and see if the crimes stop? Which, interestingly enough, I wrote a post about how L saving Misa caused his death, to prove that sometimes winning is not the only thing on his mind, but he wants to understand cases on a more nuanced level.

But the point is, this kind of people have no problem saying that L doesn’t care about others, that his ultimate goal is to entertain himself (and to win) and in the same breath, they continue by stating that he would use the death note in a blink of an eye with the same moral justification as Light, so… Does he or does he not care about the world? Why does he solve crimes? For entertainment purposes or to “get rid of the evil and save the world”?

To me, it’s both (kind of), so it would make sense that he wouldn’t use it.

REASONS: - one by one.

First and foremost, his role in the world and his responsibility of what happens to criminals after they get caught.

There’s a tendency to confuse private detective work with the criminal justice system and law enforcement.

I came across some posts a while back, when I used to dive in his hashtag, and people would read his work in a light that is not applicable to him, and I think it’s because he works with the task force.

L is a high-profile private detective, and like any other, he doesn’t have the ability to arrest nor sentence criminals.

Yes, he says that he will bring Kira’s head to the task force, but it’s a figure of speech and it only means that he will find enough proof to catch him (and I also think it was such a badass move to say it in front of Light, but I digress).

You could argue that some of his tactics aren’t legal, so he could possibly be the one to administrate “justice” (in quotes, because the death penalty is not it to me), but this is different.

If he wires the house of someone and gets proof that they committed the crime, let’s be honest, given his status and the probability of law enforcement or national agencies/government already knowing how he operates, he will get a slap on the wrist, but deciding the fate of a criminal or a suspect is overstepping his already non-existent authority in that field.

He would lose trust, which he cares a lot about. He wouldn’t be able to work with the support of the national law enforcement, which he needs because he is a private detective that countries need to employ, and nobody would do that, if he cannot respect them. It would also put him in danger of his identity being discovered, because that is a patently crime, which would get him blacklisted from working in a country and make him a wanted criminal.

"But he wouldn't be caught. Nobody would know."

Even if he uses the most intricate way to kill his suspects, one time is a coincidence, two times is weird, and three times shows that something fishy is going on. He seems to communicate his progress to high profile people, like the FBI header (we can see that at the beginning of the manga), so going from “yeah, I have suspect” to “they died” continuously would literally point every possible finger in his direction. He cannot afford that, not even if he wanted to do it. We are told and we say that he is smart, so why would he do something so stupid?

It would also be weird if all the criminals he caught were to be killed, so he would need to avoid patterns, which would definitely take him a lot of time and planning and would steal it from his actual activity, that he loves.

Besides, if he manages to kill enough people to raise some eyebrows but they are not linked to him, countries will ask him to do something about it and if he refuses, that's fucking weird, because that's the type of case he is interested in. If he accepts it, but it takes him too much time without any justifcation, weird. If he denies the help offered by national agencies, weird. If he accepts it, but does things that don't make sense and don't actual help the case, weird. Countries will start to think that he cannot be trusted, which goes back to what I said before. It's a circle that he cannot escape. And he is not the only smart person in the world. Someone will notice that something is wrong, that that is not the way he usually acts, and people will start to question his integrity.

But going back to the beginning, since he has no authority after he provides proof, I honestly believe the thought of him deciding the sentence of a criminal has never crossed his mind, because he has no reason to spend time over that. He cannot do anything. Maybe he has a wish but that is it. Nothing he can act upon, so it’s useless. He also came across so many criminals (10.500) and surely, he had no time to individually think about each one of them, so he just stopped doing that. By the way, he works on multiple cases at once, so why would he waste time over their fate, after he caught them, when he can continue to occupy it with more interesting and fun mind games?

So, yeah, he doesn’t give a shit in this sense. If his saying was required, maybe yes, but even then, he wouldn’t follow the criminal proceedings closely.

Anyway, I am not even sure what his opinion on the death penalty is, to be honest, because him using a criminal that was on the death row doesn’t immediately mean that he is in favour of it, and the fact that he was willing to get one of them out of that situation makes me incline to believe that he is not. In Lind L. Taylor, he just used what was already in place. So, if he isn't, obviously he won't use the death note by default.

The fun of solving a crime.

He loves it. You wouldn't ever guessed it, right? It's not as if his character is mainly based on this.

But seriously.

Considering the in-universe tale of what Light managed to do, it says that the crimes have dropped significantly. How can you possibly believe that L would love to be in a world in which his favourite pastime is useless?

I won’t get into math to calculate exactly how long it would take him, because the stats we have are not accurate. I tried to do it but there are so many variables that would change everything (e.g. when he actually started to work), but it’s safe to assume 20 years – or less –, because he still needs to find suspects but if he wants to use the death note on them, he doesn’t need to convince anyone but himself that they are the criminals, so as soon as he is convinced, he can proceed and then move on. He can also work on many more cases than just almost 2 a day. He can take on a lot of them, even five, if he feels like it, because the time for each one would be minimal.

And I think this is something people fail to consider when saying that he would use the death note, because what would his criteria be for choosing who to kill? Or when to kill them? If they are arrested and convicted, what’s the point of doing it? What would he achieve? Nothing, so you have to think he would do it when they are only just suspects, but he is confident enough that they are the one. The question remains: when would that be? L is quick to find a suspect and be convinced that they are guilty. Basically, for most of the easier cases, he would need less than a day. So, I’m going to believe that the people supporting this idea imply this, which is so contradictory to his character.

If you say that he would do what Light did, as I said, it makes even less sense. Other than the fact that he goes against Kira for this reason, that’s not his job nor his goal.

As you said, “What kind of entertainment is there if he just sits in front of his silly laptop, reading off solved cases just to write down the criminal's name and attend meetings with world leader?”.

Key word “solved”. I am repeating myself, but once it’s solved, why would L care? Unless he is personally invested in the criminals because they are connected to his past, or the case is related to a future one, he would literally move on. I cannot even force myself to conjure a reason other than these two, because there is not.

“But it’s Light.”

Yeah, that’s another reason why L doesn’t give a fuck. Who is Light to him exactly, realistically? No one but a suspect, which he is highly convinced that is Kira.

I am sorry, but if your whole reading of a character is through the lenses of a ship that is not even canon or probable to be canon, since Ohba is homophobic and would never do something like that, then I don’t know what to tell you, but I find it a bit embarrassing.

L is an independent character. Just like Light is.

Maybe – in-universe and without considering Ohba – I am at fault for failing to realise this attachment they might have for one another. Probably, I have this rigid way to look at Death Note in general, that does not allow me to consider L’s activity more than a case that he tries to solve, while gaining a bit of excitement out of it, especially after considering that it’s shown to us in the yotsuba arc that L cared only about Kira, not Light, because he found them entertaining and challenging, not because he liked Light.

I know it’s fiction, okay? Doesn’t have to be realistic. It can be silly and yada yada yada. I look at these posts and giggle at the “so obsessed with each other”, the whole university sees these men playing tennis and disappearing, etc. and I think it’s funny. I see the irony. That is a joke, but then I read posts that try to prove through canon that L was in love with Light or meta-analysis about him, butchering his character just for that or reducing him just to that, for a bit of gay love with the most republican looking guy ever (I mean, fair but, yk), and I wonder what I am missing, what piece of this puzzle I lost along the way, and I cannot find it.

[Tangent: And then I cannot even enjoy most of the fanfics in this fandom for the same reason. I feel like I am not in on the joke.

That’s why I also prefer L x Matsuda or L x Naomi, even though I don't ship them. People who do, at least, don’t change his personality, his morals and so on. In Matsuda’s case, it’s just a change of attitude, which is possible and easier. When I used to read L/Light fics, people would often either make L OOC or change Light completely, so that things could work. In canon, Light is no one outside of Kira, and L would have zero interest in a 17/18-year-old boy that is just smart. Also, L can find other idiots with the same intellect as him, that are not murderers and are far more entertaining. Did L ever say that Light is the only one who understands his mind or reach his level? I don’t remember it, so where does this belief come from? To be honest, I don’t even really like when people reduce characters to their intelligence. A person is more than their mind.

And I am glad to have found a small following/a group of mutuals that are like me in this regard, because the reason why I left the fandom years ago was also due to the inability to enjoy any content because it would always have L/Light slapped on it lmao (since the characters in the second half were not really considered).

Some people who ship them follow me, which is cool to see because it means they are not here expecting that, but for some unknown reason. I don’t usually go on a rampage about them – what I said here was very mild and I think bearable – so that’s maybe why they don’t mind being here, so yeah, that’s nice. There also people who like Light, and I despise him, so that’s also sweet, but it also means that I am not hating on him enough. I might compensate for that (jk)].

Killing people as a detective.

Don’t feel like I need to explain how this is just stupid. He uses some very morally grey tactics, but killing is a bit too far.

I wrote a post about how I think L wouldn’t work with Light, even if he caught him, because I honestly doubt L would want to be associated with someone who kills people, let alone be the one to do the killing. It just doesn’t feel in character, like at all. Not only it’s a shallow way to deal with criminals, he wouldn’t gain anything and if he does it long enough, his job will be useless, but why would a detective engage into that, also to that extent? It makes no sense, and, as I said, it’s not his focus.

A detective that kills people is contradictory. It is cool, not going to lie, but L is not that type of character.

I saw a comic a while ago in which L and Light joined forces, and L was the one using the death note to kill corrupted politicians. That would never happen. Not only because he wouldn’t kill criminals or join Light, but he doesn’t care that much, unless it hinders his job. And, even in that case, he would not end their life, but manipulate them to give him what he wants or persuade them to act in a way that is beneficial to him.

Neither of them is that righteous. I don’t believe Light actually cared about the world that much. His speech at the end was just to cover up that he was having fun with the power he held. Just a moral justification. I tried to write a post how him being smart, his supposed interest in this matter and his black and white view of the world don't make sense to me if he actually cared, but I was writing it in my tumblr drafts, and it got deleted. Now, it’s uncompleted in my notes, and I have no motivation to finish it. Nice.

Far-sighted.

As I was writing the paragraph above the last one, there's another thing that is different between Light and L and that is to be taken into consideration: how far-sighted they are.

I will use as an example how they manipulate.

In this post (long ask about characters in general), I talked about the Aizawa’s gateway to explain how L does it. Long story short, he convinces his target to act in a certain way, withholding information that the other person would need to know to change their mind.

He doesn’t do it with the intention to get something and then get rid of them, as Light does.

Besides Misa, who was protected by Rem, and other people, like the task force, that if dead would show that he’s Kira, Light manipulated people to gain something and killed them, because he could not see a long-term relation forming between them, probably due to the fact that he was scared that they might either try to overthrown him, hinder his work or find out who he is (although he does really get a sick pleasure by telling people he is Kira, after condemning them to death). Even in Raye’s case, he could’ve continued to threaten him and use him to kill any FBI agent that might come after him. He could’ve done so much with that one federal agent, but he just tossed him in the trash.

L is not like this. L can see himself working with same people he manipulated for a long period of time. He does not see it as an irreversible act, because other than his identity, he doesn’t have much else to hide, and he doesn’t always do something criminous. He can even create a mutually beneficial partnership.

He is far-sighted. He might think that a criminal he caught could be useful in the future. Imagine if he has a case that connects him to one he already solved and he needs any input he can get from the person responsible for that, I believe he will make a deal or manipulate them to get that information. So, using the death note and killing his possible future assets is such a self-sabotaging move, in my opinion.

What he would do with the death note.

As I wrote in the post hyperlinked at the beginning, he would study it, make Watari and himself remember the rules even without owning the death note and either give it back to the Shinigami, after getting as much as possible information about them too, or lock it up somewhere safe. It would depend on if the Shinigami is someone like Ryuk.

Either way, he would realise how destructive it is and would know not to engage with it.

Will he want to prove its authenticity? I don’t know.

He might ask the Shinigami, “how many death notes are dropped on average on the earth?” and from the answer, which – before Light – is zero, and after returning the death note to them, he might just decide to wait to see it happen without his intervention, because it’s not an urgent matter, so if it happens, he knows how to act, and if it doesn’t, it’s better.

I don’t think he’s that interested in the death note itself. In the Kira case, it was crucial to the investigation, but in a normal day in his life, seeing it actually work could lead him to have some thoughts he might not otherwise have, and that could possible spiral down to testing each rule. He would realise that, and I think he would take the Shinigami’s words at face value, considering that he just met a fucking Shinigami so that must mean that it has a high chance of working, and leave it alone.

If he had been that eager to test it, he would’t have shared his plan with the task force, as to get their approval, and would’ve done it in secret, getting back to them with just the results. It would’ve saved his life, to be honest, because Rem wouldn't have known about that and what would’ve meant for Misa. Or maybe not, because she might’ve just killed him once everything was done and while he was presenting everything. In any case, it shows not only cooperation but also a sense of hesitance on his part.

Going to the scenario of him getting the death note before Light, he would also hope that it doesn’t become a mainstream thing, because that would, like you said, make everything so boring for him, like, “get creative, I know how you are doing it”. A bit like what Near did in the 2013 one shot.

My rambling ends here, and now, I am thinking about L begging criminals to be a little bit more fun to catch, ‘cause they are making him die of boredom, and he can’t do it anymore, he’s losing his mind. And if they continue like this, they could actually defeat him. And all the leaders in the world being like, "bitch, what are you doing?? Don't encourage them!"

But yeah. That’s more or less what I had to say on the topic. I kind of get the feeling that I am leaving something out, so that might make this a “to be continued” post, depending on any external input I might get.

Drabble prompt: B insinuates L had a type (smart twinky Japanese murderers) and that Light was a major downgrade. Light is mortified by the insinuation but also can't help but insist that he would've been a major upgrade compared to B. LMAO

As the day wore on, the heat climbed higher, even higher, for a mid-summer day. Rivulets of sweat slid down his forehead, his shirt soaked and oppressively clinging to his back. Light felt the cotton stretching uncomfortably against his skin as he leaned against the wooden counter, seeking relief in the shadows of the empty pub and the cold glass of whiskey in his hand.

The sweet buzz of the fan with the jingle-jangle of bottles shifting order on the shelves would lull even a workaholic God… He could ask for more minutes of rest, but the sudden slam of the door opening didn't agree, apparently.

"Hello there, Yagami."

Light knew Beyond was there before the man talked. With eyes closed, sipping his drink in total peace, his ears well-captured the agonizing sounds of heels stomping on the floor and fingers drumming against the counter saying in Morse code ─ 'Hello God of the assholes'.

"Beyond." Light had the decency to say before gesturing for another drink. "What brings you here?"

"Gossiping. Well─ it's likely to become the talk of the town soon." Beyond poured himself a drink from a bottle, grinning in Light's direction. Who was still pretending he didn't exist ─ too bad, he would get the long-awaited attention within seconds. "Good ol' L really like murders. And murderers. To L─ being in direct contact with a killer felt like bathing in blood during a carnage. The benefits of walking barefoot in the hot fluids, viscera squishing under the soles, you know, that subtle rolling massage that makes your skin crawl and de-stress from all the tension… Aaah."

Beyond gulped down the alcohol, cheeks flushing with loving memories.

"Nah, killer Gods cannot know. They just hold their fingers like this," He turned towards Light, fingers aiming at his head like a gun. "And, puff, he's deaaaad! Deader than dead! HA HA HA."

Light huffed in silence, forehead sinking against his glass as he counted down to ten to refrain his venom ─ was it worth killing this man with his bare hands? "Beyond. Get to the point."

"L fell on disgrace liking Kira." The lonely audience of Light and the barman was enough for the sociopath to jump on the counter and walk down his catwalk, dripping alcohol at every step by swinging the bottle with only him would define elegant energy. "I don't really understand what he found in a kid playing God with a damn pen and a notebook, doing all the pfewh pfewh in the obscurity of his cute little bedroom─" Heels planted in front Light, Beyond crouched down to observe the man who stole L's attention from him. "And jerking off on an L scribbled on a piece of paper like 'Oh captain, oh my captain L, roses are red! Violets are blue! But the world is not the same without y─'"

"Excuse me?!"

Light stared back angrily, cheeks flushing─ certainly not because of the heat wave or the alcohol in his veins. His intention to ignore B's insinuations crashed to pieces the moment he spat back his retort. "Then, I guess L wasn't fond of sociopath killers who even failed at setting themselves on fire!"

The answer was yes ─ yes, he would kill this man with his bare hands right now.

"You don't see the poetic in the scorching fire of a suicide murder!" "Accept the fact he liked me more than you!" "Your hands have no knowledge of the ecstasy of disembowelment! Oh L, if you only let me show you─" "Your worm-shaped brain cells coming back to the underground? Oh, I am sure he would love that." "You're unworthy of his attention, little illusion of a God." "Worthier than you, asshole─"

"STOP!" Mello roared from his director's chair, throwing away the script that Beyond and Light weren't following ─ obviously. "STOP, FUCKIN' STOP YOU TWO! "

Matt rolled his eyes as it was already the twenty-ninth failed attempt at shooting the same scene ─ he had told Mello from the start that it was a bad idea involving both Beyond and Kira in a memorial documentary of L.
